Ratio for Positive User Reviews

Perfect! This is exactly what i was needing to increase usability of the book. The quick, "what was that proportion, again?" and the ease and speed of this App, combine into one huge A+ for me. Thank you! (my husband says thanks, too. No more greasy viniagrettes! Hurrah!).Version: 1.0.4

It's my must have in the kitchenAlready I'm seeing how this app is going to be indispensable to me. I love the book but this will really spring it into action!.Version: 0

Chef JimThis an excellent cheat sheet. Works very well..Version: 2.0.7

Love this appA handy tool for people who want to bake (or even just cook) more, without having to follow a recipe. This actually teaches you how to cook instead of just telling you what to do. A good companion to the book as well..Version: 0

Good App...I will be a GREAT App when Ratio alowes me to enter my own recipes and save them and back them up to my Desktop. I would be ok with sending my saved recipes to myself via email. Or maybe use iPhones notes that get synced into the "Mail" cliant as a note. Other wise it seams to function fine. Ratio's support seams to be a comments section that can be found with a link on Ratio's website that leads to Michael Ruhlman's site. It would be great if support was obvious!.Version: 1.0.4

Great but photos are interestingThe app itself is awesome. I have used it for years. It seems to function as it always has. The photos in the new version are black and white and I don't believe add to the app. Interesting choice as I think it affects the aesthetics of the app. Function is great. New look not so much..Version: 2.0.1

An incredible app to match one of the best cook books of all time!Ratio by Michael Ruhlman is one of the best cookbooks of all time, and now you can own the app. With a stylish and elegant interface, it breaks the ratio of mixtures in cooking down to its simplest form. Doughs, batters, custards, fat-based sauces, stocks & thickeners, meat-related ratios, and desert sauce ratios are all presented in an easy to use format for the beginning or expert cook alike. Using the basic ratios that are in cooking you can adapt them and make endless variations. Handy calculators, recipe saving, and the ability to email recipes, post to Facebook or tweet via twitter are all provided within the Ratio app. Easy to use, and totally recommended!.Version: 0

Big help in the kitchen. Great reference tool in a easy to use app.If you like to cook, buy a recipe book. If you really like to cook, read Ratio and then buy this app. You will begin to understand how all of those recipes in the other books work and have the fundamentals to create you own. Easy to use reference app that is tremendously helpful for the creative cook/chef..Version: 0

Better than the bookThis app shows a good book idea can become a better application. If you're a serious home cook that prefers stepping stones than stepbystep, this is a must have for your iphone..Version: 0

User Ratio'sIt would be cool if there was a way for users to submit Ratio's... that way the app might have more use. For example, the ratio of Kaffir/Lemongrass/Galangal (sort of a Thai Mirpoix) in a Thai soup, such as Tom Yum or Tom Kha. Western cuisine isn't the only game in town! Great app overall! Very useful, would just like to see more Ratio's for international cuisine..Version: 0

Very good for the formulas it containsI like this way of cooking. It makes a lot more sense than traditional recipes. The only thing I would say is that it needs more formulas..Version: 1.0.4

Missing a critical featureThe app is wonderful... but it doesn't support baker's percentages! I still have to calculate "well, if it's 3 parts flour to 1 part sugar and 2 parts fat, then its uh 100% flour, 33% sugar, and 66% fat, right?" I bought a special scale (on Ruhlman's recommendation!) to weigh ingredients in terms of flour using baker's percentages, but I wish the app would help..Version: 0

The BEST!!I was an early adopter of this app, & its ratios really work. I was suspicious of this technique, but it's so useful! When you cook for 2, scaling down recipes can be dicey. But having knowledge of amts. of an ingredient when trying to play with a recipe is simple, thanks to this app. (May be best for those who are used to cooking, rather than newbies.).Version: 2.0

Almost awesome cooking app!!Love the concept and the pie chart presentation of ingredient proportions. Totally suits my style of cooking, which is to take a recipe and improvise from it. This allows for that so easily: to subsitute one fat for another fat, etc. Unfortunately, I'm used to measuring ingredients by standard American measuring cups, and seeing ".2 cups" of this to ".8 cups" of that isn't very useful. I know weighing ingredients, especially for baking, is better... but I'm not quite there yet. In any case, I'd say better to eliminate the "cups" unit option than to have decimal equivalents that don't translate quickly to standard fractional measuring cup sizes..Version: 0

No badGreat app to give convince in the kitchen, I like the scientific approach, could do with a few more examples for the money..Version: 0

Back in actionSolid app and information..Version: 2.0.5

Fantastic!!!Michael Ruhlman has managed to capture the essence of his wonderful book and provide useful added functionality as well. If you cook, you need this app!.Version: 0

A promising startI have maintained since laying eyes on the book that it was an app just waiting to happen. The wait is over -- sort of. While I am happy to have Ruhlman's ratios available to me, I have developed a dozen or more of my own, and I'd like to record those in the app. The app doesn't currently support that. Certainly not a deal breaker, but disappointing. I also think the ratios themselves should be visible in the measurements frame. It's a good start, and I'm looking forward to future versions..Version: 0

Excellent app, but...I was disappointed when I realized that I couldn't add my own ratios. I assumed that's what the "My Recipes" section was for. I hope that feature is coming down the line. Otherwise it's a great resource with an attractive interface that is simple to navigate. I'm sure I'll get my money's worth..Version: 0

Great companion for the book!Get yourself a kitchen scale & learn to cook the rewarding way! Could you please add the recipes you have in your book? They would be so fast to refer to and always have along (like when you travel).Version: 1.0.4

Very good startI really like this app (and the book), but I'd like to see more functionality. Tablespoons would be a helpful unit of measurement, especially for things like roux. The app is especially helpful in situations where tools are limited and you might not have access to a scale, and the whole point of a calculator like this is that you don't have to do unit conversions in your head. I'd also like to see a better integration of additional ingredients for saved recipes. A favorite ratio isn't just the ratio, it's also the ratio that works and possibly skews in combination with the other ingredients..Version: 0

Ratios are all I'm ever looking for.Awesome app. I usually know what flavor profile want but just need a reminder of basic ratios. I might actaully start to keep track if some of my recipes now. Muchos Gracias!.Version: 0

Great, but would love item name on all 3 tabsI love this app at the concepts behind it. My only issue is that once you select an item and have the three tabs (ratio, calculator, details), the item you're viewing is only displayed on the calculator tab - please add it to the other two as well! I'm intrigued by the idea of user-added ratios for items that aren't represented, as well as notes on tweaked ratios for variations of ones that are already present but I know these are much more advanced requests..Version: 0

Awesome AppThis is a very good and functional app. The app is not a waste of time. The instant calculations are fantastic and having the ratios from the book at my finger tips is awesome! I agree with a couple of the other suggestions, but I'd really like to see on the notes is the ability to hit a return key and have the keyboard turn horizontal..Version: 0

Good. Needs pizza doughSeems to be comprehensive. But it really needs pizza dough in the app..Version: 2.0.7

Great concept - needs to be upgrade and expanded. For iPadLOVE the book. I use it all the time. The app on the iPhone is great when I am at the store and need to figure out what to buy. It would be much better if they made it to an HD model for the iPad. Like others said, it would be better if you could get the egg measurements as a per egg, but volumetric measurements are the more professional way to cook. I would love if they added more recipes from the book too. If you like the app, you will love the book..Version: 1.0.4

Interesting - worth the priceHi I think that this is an interesting app, which is probably worth the price compared to the price of a book. However it only covers staples - eg doughs, sauces etc. I was expecting dishes like lasagne etc. Hopefully, the app will be improved by letting you use the calculator on your own recipes, and secondly, letting people share ratio recipes. There should be a link to a ratio website as well..Version: 0

First lookJust got it after seeing Ruhlman's tweet about it tonight, but a brisk thumb-through leads me to believe this will be a very well-used app in the next few weeks. Love the interface and the notes to each ratio. They look very efficient..Version: 0

Some bugsIts a great app. However it could use some improvement. The calc. for mayo just doesnt work. No one needs to know how many cups of egg yolks to use, and you cant change the unit. that being my only complaint, i am happy with it..Version: 1.0.4

Fantastic idea, very promising!A brilliant concept, and sure to be with me at all times in the kitchen! There are a few odd things with the UI that nee to be polished up, like blurry text and some ratio diagrams that don't match the listed ratios, but overall it's pretty handy. It would be nice to be able to organize your own recipes after saving them. Also, to be able to choose which scren you default to for a recipe—ratios, calculator, etc. It doesn't yet feel polished or feature-rich enough to be worth the price 100%, but im glad I have it..Version: 0

Excellent kitchen toolReally useful partner to a brilliant book. Just tried it for pasta and it worked perfectly. Weighed the egg, Ratio told me how much flour to add. Knead, rest, roll, cut... perfect pasta. Now for some cookies..Version: 0

No need for recipes, I’ve got ratios!Highly recommend you read the book Ratio to understand how great this app is. Knowing basic ratios allows you to cook on the fly, to tweak dishes and make them your own. Example: rice. Liquid to dry rice 2:1. I’ll make a chicken &sausage jambalaya with two cups of rice. I’ll need 3.5 cups liquid plus the .5 cup liquid the onions, bells and celery will throw off. I’ll sauté up a pound each chicken and sausage, sweat the vegs and the stock, and the rice. Ka-BOOM!.Version: 2.0.7

Great app. Needs update! The app crashes while trying to adjust quantities when using app on iOS 4 with a 3GS. Hope it gets fixed soon! Great tool for anyone who spends time in a kitchen..Version: 0

Excellent content; Tech is lackingThis is a great app for improvising cooks and those who just want the basic foundation to build one's own recipes on. Plus they finally fixed the discrepancies between the description here, the in-app introduction, and the blurbs for the actual book. The underlying tech could use some improvement. The primary applications seem to work well: it's a ratio app and it needs to do math and it does. Some extras are a bit off. They finally got around to the iPhone 5 screen, but in early 2014, it really should be fully iPad compatible. The iPad is much better suited for a cooking companion than the iPhone (yes, these are simple formulas that will ultimately be committed to memory, but not immediately), and now that the mini is available there’s a clear middle ground between iPhone and full-sized iPad that should be supported. The transparent navigation tabs and (to a lesser extent) title bar are a mistake. When text is behind them, the tabs are rendered unreadable. This cannot be intentional as no one would have done this on purpose. Retina graphics would be nice, too. Create fully iPad-compatible app and this will be a five-star app. The content is beyond reproach. Ruhlman Enterprises should bring the app up to its level..Version: 2.0

A great follow up to a great bookI've been reading Ruhlman's book, Ratio, wishing there was a simple chart/cheat sheet to the book--low and behold, there's an iphone app. Generally, it's a great app. My only suggestion would be a tab on "variations", similar to what he does with the book--how to "doctor" the basic ratios for slight variations. Nevertheless, if you are looking for a way to improve your cooking skills and "bust out" of the "follow the recipe" trap, I'd highly recommend this app..Version: 0

Book and app are amazingThe book is exactly as described - a truly brilliant tool for any home (or other) chef. Fantastic if you love to experiment and create rather than just following a path. Highly recommend app too as a short cut tool in the kitchen. Feel like cookies, muffins? Just bash some up. Throw in whatever you like - everything is perfect every time. I LOVE this app and book. Many thanks. Recommend it to everyone..Version: 2.0.2

Great but crashing on iPhone 4I got this app after reading the book and I LOVE it. Yes, you could just write the ratios down out of the book, but the app also has a calculator and some details and tips for the different ratios. If they can fix it so that it will stop crashing on my iPhone 4 it'd be great!.Version: 0

A killer app for the iPhoneI've been waiting for this ever since the book and the execution of the app itseflf exceeds all expectations. Now with only a scale and your phone, you've got the building blocks for almost any cooking method imaginable, including cakes, cookies, sauces, doughs, and breads. Only thing they didn't figure out yet is how to keep from getting flour all over the device in the kitchen when trying to reread details mid-recipe. Gotta leave something for v2 I guess..Version: 0

Great app ruhlman and this is from a chefI think most of the negative reviews want straightfoward recipes. This app gives you the fundamental building blocks to think for yourself.Version: 0

Recipes & RatiosGreat app for on the fly cooking. Read the book to get the most from the app. I weigh the eggs in a bowl as well as the liquid, like milk or cream. When using the volumne setting, I place the eggs in a measuring cup to prepare the dish. Weighing is more accurate for large portions. Volume is easier for home cooks fixing dinner. It's a handy tool to have..Version: 2.0.7

Wonderful companion app for the bookLove the book and love this app for everyday kitchen use. Do yourself a favor by buying the app and then getting the book. This app will make much more sense after reading the book. This will take you from a good cook to a creative great cook..Version: 1.0.4
