Flipboard: The Social Magazine for Negative User Reviews

Old newsFlipboard story search finds stories over 3 years old. It used to be better than this, but has gone downhill seriously. Twitter does a better job..Version: 4.2.5

Just keeps getting worse.Flipboard has completely fallen to the “curated” and ad-driven model that has made this app no longer worth using. I used to love the convenience of being able to connect to multiple sources of news and articles in one place. I have many interests and do not follow a particular political party or ideology. Now, when I happen to read some articles that do fit a certain category, I get bombarded with more of the same. I go to an aggregator to have one place to look at a lot of different things, not to see the same type of content every time I look there. On top of that, if you don’t want to see certain ads anymore, the best option is to not touch or give any feedback on them. I’ve reported one site’s ads as being deceptive well over 20 times and they have become even more prevalent. If all I need is an API to connect to multiple sources, I can do that myself and at least only deal with the native ads from now on, and not have the content be narrowed to fit imagined categories that some statistical model says I should fit in..Version: 4.2.119

Auto launching adsTrying to boost your ad number by automatically launching into another app while swiping through stories is shady and annoying. Uninstalled. Shame because it’s otherwise a decent news aggregator..Version: 4.2.19

Ads, Ads & more AdsHave had flipboard since it debuted in App Store. I used to enjoy the different articles and topics. But, in the last several months, it has gotten much worse (to point of thinking of deleting the apps on both my iphone & ipad). Main Issue: Ads after each article or every 2 articles. Then the constant pop up videos. It makes the experience infuriating and exhausting to read and scroll just for a few articles. Flipboard, like many apps, can't understand, nor find the balance in advertising. Flipboard, clearly, is trying to maximize (advertising) revenue to the detriment of losing many (& majority) of their long-term consumers. I hope flipboard corrects and alters the amount of ads. I read flipboard responses to bad reviews that you can X out pop up ad etc. That is a ridiculous response. You think us consumers want to spend the majority of time trying to minimize your advertising so we can read articles?.Version: 4.2.101

Starting to annoy meFlipboard is filling up with click bait Time to move on.Version: 4.2.42

Don’t ship it until it works properly! The latest update persistently crashes to the extent it is not worth persevering with. Flipboard was a really good until the designers tried to be too clever - and stop automatically downloading videos! I want to read the story!.Version: 4.2.68

Better than nothingIt’s a very inconsistent interface. Some articles flip, but others scroll. And as for training it to show you articles that match your interests - good luck! Let’s say an article about SEO turns up and you want to “show less like this.” The list of topics to unsubscribe from has zero relevance to the SEO article. You’ll see a list like “potatoes, ancient Egypt, Donald Trump, jasmine” when all you want is to see fewer articles about SEO. The function is so useless it would be better not to include it..Version: 4.2

Great app before addsFlipboard was one of my favorite apps. Until they put all the trash adds in it. Navigation is anoying because the adds keeps taking you out of Fliboard for opening they’re link in Safari..Version: 4.2.20

Good platform but.I’ve seen quite a bit of fake news in the past year. I would be satisfied if you could do something about it..Version: 4.2.5

Can’t read for all the adsI noticed reviews where people mentioned the ads. The developers have responded saying they are striving for a balance with the ads, and then they also keep saying they have no control over the ads. Do you have control on your own platform or not? It’s getting so frustrating when ads continually pop up and reload the page so that you can’t actually read the articles. If it happens like twice, I try to find my place and continue reading, but I give up when it just keeps reloading every time you scroll down. I’m about to switch to something different. This is too frustrating. And I agree with another reviewer that said that the ads take up too much of the small screen space and the x is too tiny to dismiss the ads without accidentally clicking it. I’m sure that’s to drive fake ad revenue. If I was an advertiser, I’d be mad to be paying for tons of accidental clicks from people that aren’t really interested..Version: 4.3.5

News aggregator appWorks like Apple News etc but with a curation element using ‘magazines’ where news articles can be collected. Users follow/are followed by other users and user comments are featured alongside articles and in this way it differs from Apple News. Where the app is less slick is the social element. Only followers are shown and then not full lists. There is a vot up/vote down function for comments but this has no discernible effect. Horrible comments can be reported but feedback from the developers is limited. Flipboard works really well; it looks lovely and the temptation to doom scroll is massive.Version: 4.2.96

Good but …I really enjoy the app and have always preferred it over other news curation tools. Recently, for reasons I just do not understand, they made changes to the location of buttons. Sounds minor, but don’t most of us use our phone with one hand from time to time? And (sorry lefties), isn’t most of the population right handed? I’m guessing one of the most used app buttons is the BACK button. For some inexplicable reason, Flipboard recently moved that button from the very reachable bottom right (easy to reach with the thumb) to the very far upper right. I’ve been trying to figure out what’s been annoying me with the app lately. That’s it. What are they thinking?? Certainly not about how most people use their phones … may I suggest actually watching how people use the app? I think that’s UX 101 … please put the back button back. Aside from that, it’s the first app I go to in the morning.Version: 4.2.159

Get rid of the ad format or I’m deleting the appIt takes up a third of the screen and ruins the user experience. I get that you might need ads to make profit but the current format is awful, totally ruins it, come back with something better or risk a mass exodus of users.Version: 4.2.82

Ads, ads, adsToo many ads, including what appear to be news articles, but are really advertorials. Used to be a great news app. but the developers are getting greedy squeezing ads in at every opportunity..Version: 4.2.20

Was a great appI loved this app since day one with this new update There is nothing about flipping anymore, those adds play superLoud while scrolling Please fix it.Version: 4.2.59

Need fixingI wish flip board would bring back the bar at the top of the screen. I constantly have to exit the app to check the time or to see how much charge my battery is at. I get that you want to make a more “enriching” or more “ immersive” experience. But it’s annoying, and now with the latest update the default board is “for you” and I don’t like that. I want to see the news and what’s happening not what flip board servers have decided what I might be interested in. Use to love this app now it’s just going down hill fast. Edit: after your response I was able to get the status bar back (after the app crashed 7 times) but it’s working now. Also the other point I was trying to make is that I don’t want the feed that you all are forcing on everyone. I don’t want/I don’t need you all (or your sever) deciding what content I want to see. I want you to just show me content and I’ll scroll through and read what I want to. Why do companies think that they get to choose and limit what we can see? Sure it’s “optimized” but really? From what I’ve seen the optimization is crap, and it doesn’t show me anything that I actually want to read anymore..Version: 4.1.2

Dumping due to saturation of advertisingIn all honesty, I enjoyed this app for years but recently in the last few, the amount of ads being surfaced via both supplier feed and then contributed by Flipboards platform have pushed me over the edge. I am all for an ad or two but when you almost can’t scroll or flip a news article for fear of clicking on an ad that you want no part of (or don’t want to encourage more of) the experience is completely ruined. Also, let’s not forget that advertising kills the UI and sacrifices UX to the money God so rather than put up with and encourage further development in this direction, I will give Apples own news feed solution a go instead. Goodbye Flipboard, it was once nice to know you but now you’re going out with tarnishes and broken, cheap steak knives you threw into the deal..Version: 4.2.34

A Very Good App (with reservations)This app is an excellent and diverse source of news and information considerably better than all other apps. It’s Flip format is innovative and easy to use. The only downside is a constant requests to agree to source GDRP privacy requirements which I fully support BUT improvement could be made where a single set of privacy selections could be made in settings acting globally for all sources. Apple News for example does not appear to have this problem as no requests are made. I would happily pay a subscription to this service for it’s content and at the same time keep my anonymity..Version: 4.2.154

Data hogI've been using this since my favorite news reader (can't remember what it was called now) got taken over by Flipboard about four years ago. Flipboard used to be *ok*, but it's increasingly getting bogged down in stupid self generated content and unwanted video. I use this to read bits of news on the go. I don't want, or need, video clips automatically downloaded. Looked at my mobile data usage from last month and noticed that Flipboard has used 2.9gb of data. I get 1.25gb per month (accumulating) so obviously Flipboard is no longer a viable option for me..Version: 4.2.30

Generic ClickbaitJust generic click bait articles with no consideration of interests. First articles I saw were in American politics and baking to which neither I had shown an interest in..Version: 4.2.141

Flipboard causes massive battery drainRecently i noticed a massive fall in the day to day battery life of my iPhone 11 Pro, only making it half way through the day on a few hours of battery usage. However when I went into the settings, I saw that Flipboard had been on my screen for 11 minutes and then actively running in the background for almost 5 hours!! I deleted the app and have since the battery life of my iPhone return to normal. I loved flipboard as an app but I won’t be redownloading until that issue has been addressed and fixed.Version: 4.2.77

Could be improvedFlipboard is my go-to app for all things news. One of my top five apps. But a couple things I find frustrating and would love improved. First when I find something that is interesting, start reading and have to stop midway - when I get back to it the app reloads and not only have I lost the article but the real problem is you cannot effectively search and find the article I was reading. Search seems to only find magazines and other categories but not content - the most important function search should perform. Second - I cannot seem to rid myself of junk I do not want to see - no matter how much show-less I select just cannot stop nonsense from showing up. And lastly I want to block content that requires a subscription that I do not and never will subscribe to - very annoying. Cannot seem to figure out how to stop being frustrated seeing an interesting title then be blocked. I just want to block all content from that source. Again - love the app but the above make it just okay when it could be so much more. Thanks for listening..Version: 4.2.146

Test on older tablets??I have been using Flipboard for ages. But recently with my iPad Air first gen, Flickering Myth have been awful. Every time you access a magazine article and flip a page it goes onto the next article. The full text is does not even fit to the screen. You have to hold and press the page and move it up to read text that has been cut off the bottom - and this sometimes makes you flip to another article by accident. Most of the other magazines work fine. No idea why this has started to happen. Sorry but can’t rate this any higher as I have always used Flickering Myth for film articles..Version: 4.2.6

Good app but a bit shady practicesI’ve been a fan of this app for years. It offers decent aggregation of free content in an intuitive interface. I stopped using it in favor of a paid subscription to Apple News simply because that gives me access to content from many publications and news outlets that make you pay for some of the content. I would recommend this app EXCEPT for the following. After years of disuse, I started getting daily news digest emails that quickly became a nuisance. I used the unsubscribe button (as I have done with countless reputable companies) and was shocked to see a failure on my attempt because I have a content blocker on my device. I fail to see the need to make unsubscribing to email a hostile user experience and that alone makes me question their intentions. I’ll give them the benefit of doubt as a potential oversight and see how they respond, then edit my review accordingly..Version: 4.2.123

Flipboard was my fave iPad app years ago… butIt’s been downhill very gradually over the years. Here are my reasons for using it less… * The app has gotten unstable and spontaneously quits for no reason. * Every article now has a firehouse of adverts that make reading impossible. If you click on the no ads option below will not carry most of the images in the ad ridden version * There are paywalls in front of many articles, even from sources I already have subs for like the NYT and WaPo. * Rarely do videos actually run when embedded in an article. No action when you click on the play button. * You cannot refuse to get articles from a single source, only a board category. So if you don’t want Fox News in your feed, tough luck. You can’t turn it off. You have to give it all up to lose one. * Clickbait and really bad sources are all over your feed. Lots of sponsored articles. * You cannot curate your select sources. Flip only offers it all, whether you like it or not. * Clicking on the “mail to” icon when you want to send the article will always fail to populate the To: section. No other iPad app fails to make use of the send icon this way. * If you have set your iPad to “dark” mode get ready for Flipboard to fail to give you readable articles in many cases. This will persist through many OS changes. There’s more, but this should be enough to let Flip know they have gone downhill. Hope the monetizing at all costs is going as you hoped, mo munnie, unhappy user..Version: 4.2.109

New version doesn't openThe latest version opens for a millisecond and then quits. I'm running iOS 9, and even tho info says it's compatible with iOS 9, I suspect that's the problem. Unfortunately, unlike MacOS, there is no way for me to go back to the previous version. Flipboard, I will miss you. UPDATE ON JUNE 6 -- Hi, Developer! Thanks for your response. Right before I wrote the above review, I tried deleting whatever version of Flipboard I had on my phone, and then reinstalling it from the App Store. No luck. It still didn't open. But then I tried downloading again a few minutes ago and BINGO! The app opened right up, just like the good old days. I don't know which version I had a few days ago and which version I have now, and quite frankly I don't care. All I know is that Flipboard is working again and that makes me rather happy. I am changing my rating from one star to five stars, to reflect how much I enjoy using this app. I've got a whole bunch of "news aggregator" apps on my phone because I'm a news junkie, but this is my favorite. Welcome back, Flipboard!.Version: 4.2.10

Ad as NewsDon’t really like how the same Ad repeats and looks like a news article every 20 or 30 flips. Advertising needs to be more clearly identified as such. I don’t like sneaky Ads. Boilerplate response from Developer is really not cool. That response does not address the issue as that was not the issue pointed out in the feedback..Version: 4.2.63

Was a Long time userThe amount of advertising and click baiting is now way to much. It was a good 6 years. Too much fake new click bait..Version: 4.2.2

Good appI like this app as I can always find an interesting article to read but I’m not sure if I know how to use it properly because there is also quite a lot of articles on there that are not relevant to my interests and a lot of the time I’m seeing a lot of different articles on exactly the same thing, namely “Saturday Night Live” which I have never seen and have no intention of ever watching. Also, the whole Ellen Degeneres saga was overplayed and every other article I flipped was about her and her bloody controversy. I also don’t care for articles, mainly seen in The Sun”, about the most random things that have happened to “everyday folk” like a woman who found a secret compartment in her washing machine. I know there’s close to 8 billion people on the planet, all with different interests but COME ON! Suffice to say I have tried to find ways to filter out the pointless articles I keep coming across but I’m not sure how to or if there is even a way. Maybe I’m just spending too much time on my phone and not enough time in the real world but I gotta get my news from somewhere!.Version: 4.2.86

Long term userEvery few months I update my review as I like this app a lot but on an iPad it just isn’t stable and the iPad needs rebooting to solve crash issues once or twice a month . The webpages that won’t display properly are becoming more common and it try’s to switch to reader view but this doesn’t always display the pictures. Now the iPhone version has developed problems with not being able to flip stories, maybe this is a temporary issue but an app that is becoming unreliable..Version: 4.2.166

Good app. Used to be great. To many advertsNice way to see news on topics in interested in. But has too many adverts. Every time an article is clicked it goes to the page which is full of adverts. If there's anything I can do to reduce or remove these- this will be a four or five star app. Thanks Thanks for your reply stating you don't have control of third parties cookies. Ill email now to the email provided a screen shot of a Flipboard app article. And THE SAME Article opened in Safari. The problem is coming from within Flipboard. Not the third party site. Hope you can help. Thanks..Version: 4.2.75

Good but a bit glitchyJust about most of the articles I try to open in this app I can’t actually view.. usually they pop up with a cookies consent box which, while in the app, I’m unable to accept due to being unable to close a pop up or scroll down to the button. Also a lot of the articles are a bit trashy, the health and medical articles that come up are usually unfounded sensationalist articles about ‘how to lose belly fat’ or ‘the new drug that will eliminate cancer’..Version: 4.2.20

Gone downhillWhat happened to this app? I’ve been using it for years and recently installed in on new work phone. Can’t even select my own country as a news topic anymore, and the articles I get are 90% celeb/promo/scam dribble. Time to find a new app.Version: 4.2.150

Works OK on iPad, but complete garbage on Galaxy TabI get to read news articles on a free app and that’s great. Some stories will not open due to subscriptions being required, which is fair, as businesses need to make money - and that’s where the expectations with pop-up ads blocking content comes in…it’s a free app and I’m happy to deal with it on iPad because that’s how they make their money. On the Galaxy Tab though, it’s nearly impossible to read the content due to the constant pop-up ads blocking everything. Both devices offer “reader view” to just see the print without many of the photos and pop-ups. On the iPad app, the reader view option is sometimes almost immediately, and sometimes can take several seconds to become available - again, advertising/revenue/money…it’s a business that needs to make money. On the Galaxy Tab though, you click on the article, go make coffee in grandmas old percolator, take a shower, get dressed, then MAYBE, reader view may be available. But normally, it’ll be video ads on top of other video ads, that require the reader to press the invisible “x” about 8 times, to get past the ad, only to have another one replace the last one, 12 seconds (or less) later. I like the app on iPad, but don’t bother with it much on Galaxy Tab anymore..Version: 4.3.8

Used to be good.... not anymore.Flipboard used to be good but lately they have allowed ads that auto play video with audio that cannot be turned off. Look how many reviewers are saying the same thing over the last year. The result is your phone starts playing loud audio without you expecting it. You could be quietly reading in a public place and have loud audio start playing that you can’t turn off. There are other news aggregators. Better off with them..Version: 4.2.59

Flipboard like a beautiful woman or handsome man you find has an IQ of 85Unfortunately the combination of algorithms and subscription only news pages make this beauty much shallower than one would hope. There is no denying Flipboard is very easy on the eyes however the algorithms efforts to try and give you more of what you look at just end up giving you less of what you want. One or two stories on a given topic are enough when I am looking for the widest range of news on all topics. Further, I am constantly shut down by stories that look interesting only to find I am forbidden to read more than a teaser without subscribing. I would happily subscribe to Flipboard if all of the content was then accessible without additional subscriptions! And truly at the beginning and end of every day there is probably only 25-30 minutes of new news worth reading so do I really need Flipboard for that?.Version: 4.2.129

Great app. Adds with a time delay will drive me away!Been using this app for few years but the recent addition of adds that have count down before you can scroll past will be the end for me. They often glitch and you have to restart the app. Have adds in billboard form that you can scroll past and users can choose to engage with, but don’t force users to stare at them. I’ll be looking for a different app..Version: 4.2.141

Nasty commentaryDeleted the app simply because I’d had enough of the nasty, bigoted commentary on pretty much every article. Such a same really as the functionality of the app is really quite good. They need to figure out a way to curb the trolls..Version: 4.2.51

Love Flipboard - Hate “For you…” notificationsUpdate - After the developer response I tried to change my notifications. However these are the notifications that your phone will give you, not the annoying little red numbers by the speech bubble in the app itself….so still 2 stars from me at the moment! Flipboard seems recently to have changed their policy on using the area for comments and now shows “for you…” notifications. Not only are these very annoying they are also next to useless. Please get rid of them..Version: 4.2.147

Too many adsI’ve been a Flipboard user for a couple of years. I like it a lot, but lately it’s felt a bit overrun with ads....Version: 4.2.63

Excessive auto play adsSo many news pages these days are riddled with auto playing ads or excessive ads which can be got rid of by using the Flipboard “reader view” function. Downside is that reader view has to be activated for each page visited. Having reader view as the default would be a good setting to add if possible in the future..Version: 4.2.103

Too many addsIt is frustrating to read a page when all those ads pop up all the time. I stopped using Flipboard because of that plus no news content was posted about the world anymore..Version: 4.3.24

LangueImpossible de filtré par langue. Exemple Canada Français..Version: 4.1.1

Aren’t Apps supposed to get better?Flipboard used to be brilliant, I really liked the way you’d ‘flip’ through articles instead of finding yourself constantly scrolling slightly. But that rarely happens now. The ads were inevitable once the App gained traction, and whilst they’re irritating, I do understand they’re essential. But things like the way Mashable stories need constant left to right scrolling to read them, the never ending cookie control pop ups, the subscription requests when you’re halfway through reading an article, which you can’t clear unless you stop reading the article! Do they think irritating me is going to persuade me into subscribing? I use it still, but far less than I used to..Version: 4.2.11

Fake classification of contentI work in computer science and have been using Flipboard for three years now. Unfortunately the last six months has seen categories dedicated to computer science increasingly peppered with unrelated political stories. Today I opened the first page of Computer stories, and only one of them actually had anything to do with computers. The rest were all heavily Republican slanted partisan political articles that had no business being on the page. Looks like it’s time to find another source that is more honest with its readers..Version: 4.2.5

Still crashing after the latest updatePlease fix!.Version: 4.2.46

Ads and Ads, Many Articles do Not Display Correctly28 June 18 Update - 1. One of the remaining bastions for pop up ads. 2. Many articles display totally different than they do when one goes to the source article without using flipboard. Many articles I need to copy the name and then search the web, find the actual article to be able to read it. In flipboard many links, content simply does not display. NOV 2016 UPDATE - still no developer response to any of the below. No ability to screen and refine, e.g. Screen to only US source articles in a specific category. No guidance for top most popular feed in a specific category. Some pages flip right, some scroll down, you try to go back and kicked out of the article entirely or back to the beginning of the entire section, many articles are just ads or riddled with ads, full of pop ups that your pop up blocker cannot stop, full of articles from other countries that you cannot filter out in settings (e.g. Only US sourced articles), full of articles that when you click them you get two or three sentences and then a link to subscribe and pay..Version: 4.2.11

It got clickbaityI used to use flipboard all the time, but noticed a slow decline in the quality of news it would present me, so I deleted the app and looked elsewhere. Eventually I came back to flipboard - as it has one of the most fluid interfaces of news apps with least intrusive ads - and signed up with a new account. We started off strong but over a few weeks the feed deteriorated into second hand, sensationalised stories. I find, even though I’ve set interests and preferred sources, the home feed buries longer, more informative articles to make way for clickable, hyperbolised stories. It’s now similar to scrolling Facebook for news, which is a shame because I used to appreciate Flipboard for its formal and neutral presentation. My guess is; flipboard shifted their algorithm to ensure users scroll for longer to increase profit from ads (like every other free news feed), but I guess that’s the cost of “free” news. Unfortunately, although flipboard served me well through secondary school and university, in the era of misinformation, I’m letting it go. RIP. It was nice while it lasted xx.Version: 4.2.77

Still my go to but sadly forcing video and other ads down my throatGreat news site and I’ve used it since it’s inception. Living remotely and on satellite internet so I pay for every megabit transmitted. Also the internet is slow so my readings are constantly interrupted by ads being interposed above my now very jerky stories, and forced video ads taking precious screen space and megs. The x to dismiss the video ads is often small or hard to see, and often take several clicks to make disappear. Plus lots more ads masquerading as news. I get they have to make money but this is overdoing it and very sad as well as annoying. I’d happily pay a subscription fee to eliminate them but to date, not an option..Version: 4.2.98

No progress on big bugsUPDATE: one of my most used apps (14K flips) but still very buggy; current version crashes repeatedly on launch, worse there is no improvement in over a year on the number one bug - often completely loses state and reinitializes when the user takes a phone call, switches to another app or simply lets phone sleep that means if you’re reading something you pretty much have to finish reading in one session or open the article in Safari; otherwise it will reload the whole feed; it’s very frustrating, and i wonder if they have kept the bug on purpose, since it encourages me to finish reading articles and flip through my whole feed without interruption EARLIER: i’ve used Flipboard heavily for several years; it is a good curation app; however over the last several months the app has become much less reliable; most importantly, it is very poor at remembering where you were (saving state) — you can be in the middle of reading an article and do something as simple as let the phone go to sleep or answer a text or phone call, and when returning to the app it reloads the whole feed as if it has been force quit — this is intermittent but happens several times a day for me, and it’s very disruptive another major fault is the ability to share articles from Safari or other apps is very unreliable — often the sharing panel for Flipboard loads, then crashes before any action can be taken; i’m getting more frustrated and looking for alternatives.Version: 4.2.157

“Comments”Flipboard is great. However...they may want address how many user comments are legitimate thoughts written by actual readers. Many comments connected to articles appear to be written by users with little or no flips, likes, or magazines...perhaps indicating no real investment into the app or no desire to actually read articles...they only want a venue to help foster disagreements. Many of these comments look purposely incendiary. Considering that many of these articles go on to be posted on Facebook or Twitter, Flipboard may want to do its part to curb bots and “fake news” and encourage legitimate discussion rather than fostering division. Commenters who actually have flips or magazines are few and far between, indicating an overwhelming number of commenters are not real accounts. Flipboard, please solve this, you have a responsibility to NOT contribute to division. Addition: The comments are now even more prevalent and, if you can believe this, more negative and divisive from both sides. These commenters haven’t even read the articles! It’s ridiculous! These are definitely bots or trolls meant to drive up anger. Flipboard replied to my last review that I could “report” these users. Are you kidding me!?!? I’d have to report ALL of them on every article. How is this responsible of you as a company?!?! What are you doing to curb this besides putting it on the onus of your legit users to “report” every single fake user?!?!.Version: 4.2.47

OmissionsThis new version no doubt has some great features people will like. I feel there are omissions that really detract from using this app for me. Social accounts are now in the second tab, so you must select that tab to view them. You can no longer pull down to refresh them. When looking at my Instagram feed I am disappointed to see that the Instagram pictures are cut off at the sides! It really wouldn't be that hard to write the app so they fit properly!.Version: 3.0

Now getting spam emailsI made the mistake of sending a few stories through to my email and now I am getting marketing spam. Just to clarify, the email address is an address I use for this purpose. The spam emails started within a few days. Deleted this forever..Version: 4.2.66

Expect lots of fake news...If you want ‘Outdoors’ news, expect lots of ‘Climate Change’ propaganda. If you want ‘Political’ news, expect lots of Trump-bashing. If you get tired of all the negativity, you cannot put a thumbs down or ‘unlike.” You can click a heart for what you love, but the only way to get rid of the negativity is to ban that particular feed source. I don’t know how they decide which articles to show, but it certainly isn’t according to the population of America, which is roughly 50% conservative, as proved by the last presidential election. I can’t help but wonder, are they are trying to give people the balanced news they want, or FLIP them toward what they want them to believe? Hope I’m wrong in doubting it. I love the Flipboard concept, but would just LOVE to be able to add specific blogs, publishers, etc. Also, when I first set it up I was able to give it a few categories of my special Interests, but I see no way now to go back in and modify that, without sharing tons of information about myself by signing in with my Facebook/Google/etc. accounts. Strange! It should be easy to go back in and give it specific topics or URLs, or just specify ‘fewer negative articles.’ Hope they’re listening— it has a wonderful design, and lots of potential! Also, sometimes, after you interact with it, when you go back in, it flips all the way back to the beginning..Version: 4.2.17

Not sure what’s going on…Have loved Flipboard for years. But in recent weeks it has slowed to the brink of being unusable. It’ll load a batch of 5-7 stories, paise wisecracks before repeating cycle or crashing. Worse on iPad. Similar problem on iPhone, though. It will be a shame to be forced to a different tailorable curator….Version: 4.3.14

Can’t read most articlesUseless when most articles require a subscription to read..Version: 4.2.69

Disturbing trendsI have bee using and enjoying Flipboard for quite awhile now and it has been a very enjoyable source of news, information and fun stuff. They generally cover both sides of most issues with a fair look at each and a minimum of favoritism, I lean right and only occasionally feel their coverage leans left. A major accomplishment in my view. I have dropped my rating from 5 to three because the adds have gotten out of control with full page pop ups that only disappear after several hits to the x or only after up to a minute despite repeated touches to the x. Rapid fire adds appearing immediately after the previous one is deleted and multiple links that demand subscription or sign inns to read the stories. I still find the content worth the occasional off color discriptive adjectives uttered over adds but it is beginning to try my patience. Please tone it down a bit..Version: 4.2.67

AddsAnother bites the dust but adding adds to its APP - bye bye..Version: 4.2.10

No longer works effectively in the UKUPDATE Feb 20 Have just tried to use this app again. The feeds are still not working properly and I am still receiving obscure news articles for small towns in the US (I live in the UK and do not care to have news about a walking trail not yet opened). The App use to be a heavily used and favourite app, but I am going to close my account. ——————- UPDATE Aug 19: still no response from Support re the glitches and inability to download. They did respond to tell me how to set regional settings - which had always been set to the UK. It appears Flipboard support do not have the requisite skills to understand or fix problems. —————————————— I have used Flipboard for years, on a near daily basis. In the last two and half months, the app has stopped downloading 90% of my content, has become glitchy and crashes when I do use it. I reported the matter to support, after I had deleted the app and reinstalled; and I keep getting the message from support they are looking into it. Last year there was a significant increase in content from the US; I live in the UK!! I am not interested in a new theatre, lovely as it is, opening in the Mid-West. Not sure why US content has increased, but I would love to see a filter to reduce/ eliminate content from the US and increase content from Europe and the UK. If management have decided to concentrate only on the US market, tell the users and we can take our business elsewhere..Version: 4.2.67

Following Twitter’s leadYes, I know that A-long Pus calls it X now. You can call a dog dropping a diamond, but it’s still a dog dropping. So, in order to force us to watch all the ads, Flipboard has decided that we can no longer open stories in (ad-blocking) Safari. Same tactics as Pus, forcing users to watch ads. I love the fact that Flipboard complains constantly about Twitter blocking them and then pulls the same stunt themselves by blocking Safari..Version: 4.3.17

UnusableThe amount of loud pop up video ads has forced me to delete this app and get my news from other sources. I really liked flipboard prior to this, however it’s now unusable..Version: 4.2.84

Keeps crashingI have been using flipboard since it started, I am very disappointed in the way it uses huge amounts of data and has started crashing all the time..Version: 4.2.24

Was good until it wasn’tFlipboard was my go-to news app for a long time. I like that I could get articles from a variety of sources, some free, others through paywalls. But now it’s more annoying than anything because of the constant, aggressive bombardment of ads. You flip and a stupid ad flashes, grabbing the screen. You flip pass it and it moves up to the top of the screen, forcing you to x it off, which only works after tapping the x several times exactly. If you do find an article of interest, good luck actually reading it. They are so choked with ads that they crowd out the text of the actual article. Flipboard can’t do much about how news sites handle themselves so I can’t blame them for that, but the aggressive ads while flipping between articles are their responsibility. I’m gonna have to give up flipping and go directly to decent news sites or not bother at all. Was fun while it lasted..Version: 4.3.10

New update stinks.I’ve been using Flipboard for many years, and it’s long been my favorite news reader app. That said, this most recent update completely reversed the UI, and for no apparent reason. It’s bad. And a few updates back something broke, and now, if I leave the app for even one second, to respond to a text or lock my phone to order a coffee for example, I lose my place— it’ll close out whatever I’m reading and go back to the intro page. It didn’t use to do this, it’s only been the last few months, and it’s obnoxious to the max. I really don’t love the idea, but if these changes aren’t reversed and things put back the way they were for YEARS, then I’m probably going to switch to Apple News. I don’t want to do that, I’ve always been loyal to Flipboard, but these recent changes serve no purpose other than to frustrate and annoy. Fix it, guys. And while you’re at it, maybe let’s finish the desktop versions of the app as well for Windows, Mac and Linux? I won’t hold my breath on that one, but PLEASE at least undo these terrible changes..Version: 4.2.160

Flipboard No Longer A Viable AppI have used Flipboard from the time it was introduced. Until it was introduced, I used Zite to look up content for the areas I was interested in. I hated to give up Zite but it was designated for EOL status as an app. I was happy with Flipboard as it provided me with the content I was interested in. But this all changed about eight months ago. Flipboard's algorithms for finding material has gone downhill. I find articles that no longer fit the areas that I am interested in. Despite numerous emails to Flipboard support, they have done absolutely nothing to improve their algorithms. I have as a selected area of interest, the New York Yankees. I constantly get articles from Flipboard concerning food, perfume, models, football in addition to the expected articles on the Yankees. This is also the case for other areas of interest. I know the app is free but if it doesn’t the content for areas you selected, it is no longer a good app. I decided to write this review before I delete Flipboard from my iPhone and iPad so others can avoid this app..Version: 4.2.6

Good concept, annoying executionI’ve been using Flipboard for years, and despite its issues, I’m too invested in it to move to a different platform, but I have to confess a glaring functional flaw. The auto refresh function is a huge disadvantage. Obviously, a refresh feature is something one wants for a media aggregator, but it’s extremely problematic in this case. It’s a frustrating pain when you see an article you want to read, but can’t find it after reading another article beforehand. But that inconvenience pales in comparison to the worst aspect: I cannot recall how many times I had to put my phone down in the middle of reading a long piece, and when I pick it up to resume reading, Flipboard has done a complete refresh, and if I can find the article at all (often I cannot), it takes a long, frustrating time. This is a major flaw for anyone who has the attention span required for articles which take longer to read than the length of a TikTok video. Really, there should be an option to have the application only refresh when it opens anew (as opposed to being tabbed back to from another application), or when the user directs it to. A long overdue functional amendment..Version: 4.2.152

Intrusive addsIt was a really good app, but lately ads have become more annoying and intrusive. Adds where the x to close button doesn’t work for several seconds after the ad appears. I finally deleted it when I kept getting an ad that wouldn’t let me scroll past, and would take me straight to a download page no matter what I did..Version: 4.2.135

Hero to zeroUpdate: After using the Apple News app for 2 days, I’ve realised it’s now way better than Flipboard. Bye bye Flipboard. I suggest others try Apple News as an alternative for themselves. I was a loyal Flipboard user for years, but they’ve really let us down. Have had this app on my phone for as long as I can remember and it used to be fab. I remember the arrival of Apple News as a rival and Flipboard easily dispatched them. I was particularly impressed at the app’s ability to learn what stories I liked and serve up more of these. Now however it’s like I’m seeing the newsfeed of someone else, completely irrelevant stuff. Yea, the ads are annoying like others say, but for me it’s the app serving up rubbish articles I’m just not interested in that may well see this app in the recycle bin. Devs - please bring back the old algorithms!.Version: 4.2.63

Too many forced redirectsUsed to be an awesome program, now forced redirects every 2 or 3 articles popping up and taking over the screen have made this app unusable and I just uninstalled it and will. It be installing g it again.Version: 4.3.22

Malicious website and tracking detected in my routerFlipboard pages contains those malicious website and tracking codes .. I have reported many times but no actions. Those website are fine when browsed on a standalone browser but detected when flip via flipboard.Version: 4.2.98

Greed ruins everythingUsed to be great, but now when you swipe past an ad, it registers as a click on the ad every time. Gotta get those clicks I guess..Version: 4.2.15

Stop allowing launching to App StoreI used to like Flipboard but this is too annoying. Please prevent App ads launching into App Store when flipping through articles. Very annoying!.Version: 4.2.20

Abusive ... Ads everywhere... Takes over audio outputCrash, Crash, Crash! Always crashing! Every few minutes the app is now crashing (Jan 2024) First, If you want to see what users think about this app, sort the reviews by "most recent" I like to read news while listening to music on my iphone . That is impossible to do now. Most Flipboard pages steal the audio output from Apple Music ... so the music stops ... and is replaced by silence. As far as I can tell most if these pages have no audio or video but still "stop the music". If I restart the music, returning to the flipboard app again stops the music Ads, ads and hundreds of sponsored pages that you see over and over again. And then there are all the articles impossible to mute because the mute options do not provide the option to mute the content I do not want to see or care about. And then there is all the attempts at data collection ... Why am I asked so many times who I am going to vote for? So Flipboards response to my review and is "Please contact us within the app". That is it. Nothing else provided. They could say "We can help you resolve your issues or maybe your experience should not be happening" Anyway, Lets see if they do anything after I contact them. I will post here their reply!.Version: 4.3.22

Nice interface but really terrible treatment of users.Flipboard will block a user's comments without informing the user that they have been blocked, all while allowing the user's magazines to continue to be seen, promoting Flipboard's stake in articles being propagated. After spending hours curating "your magazines" and trying to develop followers only to find that your content can be seen but not followed... and by not informing the user (who continues to have curatorial control ) that they have been blocked, that their ability to gain new followers or make comments has been terminated. Adding to this injury, Flipboard will send email updates inviting you, an unknowingly BLOCKED user, to add more content to (your) popular magazines!! This is self serving and deceptive--should be acknowledged by the developers more aggressively. Flipboard is self serving and clearly doesn't care about users. They apply their moderation rules unevenly. Users beware!.Version: 4.2.165

Please fix advert scrolling bugWhen you scroll on an advert tile it will automatically register your scroll to go beyond it as a click. It then redirects you to a web page away from the app when all you wanted to do was scroll past that to the actual content. While this is probably giving you loads in add click revenue... it’s a terrible experience. This is coming from someone who has been using your app most days for years. I love the app... but this is in retaliation for you guys not having fixed this bug for months now..Version: 4.2.22

FlipboardVery poor replacement for the great Zite. Crashes every day. Great potential but does not work. Horrible..Version: 4.1.1

Really disappointed. Many limitations for customizationI was looking for an app to provide me customized news based on my preferences. It was exhausting seeing negative news all the time either about coronavirus or politics that I wanted an app that can deliver me news just on a particular topic like art or design. Not that I don’t keep myself informed on other sources but I wanted to customize this news app to inspire creativity. I was excited when I saw that Flipboard does have the capabilities to customize but this is also its downfall. Even while just browsing the art or design tags, I still received news on my boards about politics or other topics I wasn’t interested in. I knew this would be a possibility because some news items may also be tagged that way based on the article’s content. However, I tried to customize it further by using the “less like this” option. Regardless of how many times I have selected “less like this” of a certain topic, it still comes up day after day...despite those same exact keywords showing up as an option to see “less like this.” I really tried and gave this app a good few weeks but unfortunately, I’m off searching for a new app..Version: 4.2.85

Like the concept but..I like the Flipboard idea, but recently am using it less because all articles are like ‘the one thing you must do to stay happy’ or the ‘17 things to avoid to be a winner’. This turns me off and I found other sources of news..Version: 4.2.50

Annoying adsLess than one minute into opening the app and an advertisement appears.Version: 4.2.5

Be wary of downloading this app!I downloaded this app and didn’t get on with it - I just personally didn’t like the interface very much. I decided I wanted to delete my account, and there the problems began! When I try and delete my account within the app I get an error message, and the same when I try to reset my password. I have exchanged countless emails and instant messages with customer support requesting that they delete my account and all data, but they seem unwilling to do this - their replies continually evade my request! Have been unable to delete my account after over a month of communicating with them... I would avoid giving them your data!!!! 🤬.Version: 4.2.13

RubbishThe app used to be nice however it’s spammed with adds and advertisement placeholders. Moderators on public comments are a bit fragile..Version: 4.2.154

Too many flipping ads!I review this app every now and then , been using since day 1 , the ads are just too much , I get an ad at about every 4 flips ! and they are usually the same 2 ads over and over and over and over again … too many ads plus accepting cookies from news stories and again these are site you visit multiple times yet still seem to ask to accept cookies … great app but many annoyances.Version: 4.2.113

Not anymoreWas a great app but with all the updates it’s turned to garbage so I had to delete.Version: 4.2.5

Intrusive adsI’ve been using Flipboard for years, but it’s time to look for an alternative. The ads are so intrusive. Top and bottom of the screen at the same time. Sometimes taking up more than half the screen giving you only a small window in the middle to actually read what you’re looking at. Then an advert will suddenly pop up in the middle of what you’re reading and you’ll lose your place because it shoots up the screen and you have to scroll back to find it again. Would no longer recommend..Version: 4.2.104

Disappointed with the lack of governanceThis is a great apps for focusing you news feed on areas of personal interest. Easy to setup and very intuitive so you get going quickly. There is a broad range of sources so you generally get a balanced perspective from the various articles. The only area of concern is the comments. Flipboard does not do any proactive policing of the comments so it exposes the reader to abusive extremist views and people venting their bile breaking most of the respect rules laid out by Flipboard. If you report abuse they just block you from seeing that and future submissions from the perpetrator. Judging by the number of comments I can no longer see, these people are still allowed to share their hate to those prepared to see it. It makes me wonder what damage it could be doing to vulnerable minds. So I would give five starts to the app, but one star to the management of the community. Shame!.Version: 4.2.34

Great app, but almost unusable due to cookiesThe way this app throws up cookie alerts ALL THE TIME drives me crazy. The interface is great, but I am moving to Apple News which does not have this cookie problem. Edit - I do use the Reader View feature, as suggested by the developer feedback (thank you for that, very good to see a response), and to be fair it is good. But I do feel it is hiding the problem, and does still need an extra intervention for each page view, which itself is annoying, and also does sometimes mess up the ability to read the content. So, I’ve added a star to my original review, but my feedback remains essentially the same - Apple News does not suffer with this problem, so why does Flipboard?.Version: 4.2.96

Not good enough.I just want Flipboard to run on both my Surface Book and iPad Pro (the same). Runs fantastically smooth on iPad and badly on Windows. If the developer doesn’t care about Windows performance, then I’m happy to keep using Microsoft News..Version: 4.2.28

Tons of news but filters don't workWhile it's a nice app to grab. Reading news from all over the place now I can't filter out articles that flood my categories I like to read. No matter how many times I tell it to show less of PUBG and Fortnite, I'm consistently flooded with articles of them and I have been filtering them for a month but to no avail making that channel useless now and full of junk I don't want to read about..Version: 4.2.6

Ads, more ads, lies and deceitThe app itself works extremely well, the technical team behind this app deserve respect for their efforts. I just can’t offer more than two stars, due to the endless ads trying to rip me off. I actually prefer data collection and targeted ads, to what is presented here. I don’t believe that local millionaires have a secret they don’t want to share. I know for a fact that Sony don’t want me to test their new PS5 for them. When you actively try to rip off and victimise your customers, don’t be surprised if they delete your app and find their news elsewhere..Version: 4.2.77

Ads annoyingAdvertising getting more intrusive with every update. Enough..Version: 4.2.10

Such a shameIt’s such a shame that a good news platform has been taken over by news outlets hiding their news behind paywalls. Trying to catch up on the current affairs of the day, I was blocked from EVERY story that I tried to read by messages telling that in order to continue reading I needed to either register or subscribe, and I’m not going to do that, why should I have to? I have removed Flipboard from all my devices and I strongly urge you not to bother with it, just stick to Apple News, at least they tell you if a subscription is required before you open the article..Version: 4.2.122

Flipboard not remembering preferenceThe Flipboard keeps giving me suggestions of news I have specifically request not to want. Getting tired of it.Version: 4.3.22

All ads — very little actual contentIt’s just all ads. Why would anybody use it? The interface is fun and user friendly but you don’t see the occasional ad, it’s ALL ads with the very rare and occasional article. I literally started clicking on ads looking for the copy, thinking they were articles. Nice architecture, but you’ve lost a customer and I won’t invest another minute trying this again. There’s too much great competition with readers and aggregators out there. Good luck. UPDATE: the developers have now been in touch to offer assistance. But I don’t need assistance! I was offering feedback. I’ve finished evaluating the software. I have no more time to invest in this software as there are others that do similar and are not saturated with ads. Thanks. FURTHER UPDATE: they keep writing to me, and I don’t want to hear from them. Writing a review is not ‘reaching out for help’, it’s publishing an opinion. I didn’t realise by publishing a review, the developers might invade your private in-box and you can’t stop it or even reply — the Apple email offers you to ‘contact developer’ but it’s a link to their FAQs — this is an example, the whole scenario, of treating your customer base with contempt. I’m sorry I published a review and expected good faith behaviour from them. Developer, you do not have permission to write to me. If you have anything to say, please say it I public. And please stop saying ‘thanks for reaching out to us’ — I didn’t reach out to you. This is weird..Version: 4.2.68

No customer support. So I have asked customer support why I don’t get any notification of other people comments and every time they send me some chatbot response that it is being assigned to someone who then promptly closes the case without doing anything or ever contacting me. I doubt that actually anyone gets assigned. Most probably they send a dumb automated response and close the case automatically. On top of that trying to filter out content that I don’t want is next to impossible. For example I don’t want US politics but that is never an option, instead the options are so vague that eliminating them would knock out many stories I am interested about. Not to mention that even with heavy filtering of some options they still give me articles that I don’t want at all and tried to filter. The only thing interesting about this app is that you can get multiple sources of news but apart from that it’s useless..Version: 4.3.24

Gets more annoying with ageIt seems that as this app matures its developers go to great lengths to make me want to delete it. It’s been my go to for news for a long time now, but the autoplay of videos is terribly annoying. Now the full screen ads that have been added not only play video but loud audio that doesn’t stop when you’ve flipped past it. I’m seriously just a couple more annoying video ads away from saying goodbye to Flipboard and hello pretty much anything else. —— Update After only an automated response from the developer, and a long succession of loud ads when my volume is off, I have respirated to uninstalling flipboard after many years..Version: 4.2.59

Once brilliant, now poor, crashes regularly. Don’t lose a loyal user base.I very rarely write reviews and am gutted to write this. This has been my go to app for news for a number of years. A joy to use. It’s sadly no more. It consistently fails to open certain articles even if you choose to ‘open in Safari’ once it fails within the app. Crashes too. Updates are NOT fixing the problem or the right attention or skills are not being given to the problems. Add to that the adverts mentioned in other reviews are now an absolute pain. Please don’t make us report your problems, they are simple to find and recreate, happening across a wide range of articles and in many usage conditions. Spoken as a tester of software for 20+ years I’d be genuinely embarrassed at this drop in quality of what was an exceptional product. Come on, give as back what millions of us have loved for so long. It’s a crowded market and people will start to move if you’re not quick..Version: 4.2.68

AdsAds were recently added to the feed. Full page ads that, when the page is flipped, are always clicked. This isn’t caused by miss handling the device or something: every time I flip through it quickly, is gets tapped 100% of the time and opens up a Safari page on iPhone XS or iPhone 7. This is a discouragingly bad UI/UX decision for a quick money ads click scheme. I’ll look into other apps now after using Flipboard for years..Version: 4.2.19

Insanely high data useRecently Flipboard started using hundreds of MB per day out of my data plan. Just browsing, not watching lots of videos or other bandwidth intensive activity. Maybe a bug in a recent update? I've used the app the same way for years and suddenly it's chewing through my data plan like Homer Simpson with a box of donuts..Version: 4.2.18

Avid user.Been using Flipboard for a number of years but the latest update in the comments section seem to have been made for larger phones. When typing you can barely see the top of what you are typing. Apart from that it still pretty good..Version: 4.2.157

Ads play with sound even with mute onGreat aggregator, but the prevalence of ads in the news feed has been ramping up constantly. The worst offense is that now video ads will play with full volume even when silent mode is on. Not appreciated. If this issue persists, I’ll switch to another app..Version: 4.2.59

Informative turned Ads induced nightmareHaving this app over a few years, a trend has been developing any solidified. What was a quick convenient method to draw on several news sources, has turned into a popup advertisement nightmare. Frequently after reading an article within Flipboard, is a popup for products, subscriptions, other websites you name it. It wouldn’t be so much of an issue but when you close the unsolicited popup, you go back to the browsing screen in Flipboard and have to start all over by reloading the page you had almost finished reading but interrupted for a pop up. The data usage is very high for an app supposedly providing simplistic pictures and text articles. The ads are proliferating beyond control. You are seeing more ad space than content. Not as content intensive as it used to be. Still a good app as far as convenience goes for multiple sources tailored to your interests. And by your choice I might add is something taken for granted. You have input here whereas similar applications don’t give that to the user..Version: 4.2.92

Was once a good appI find it that they block people without reason and their customer service is none existent and they seem to supporting more people with extremism and block people speaking the truth.Version: 4.2.168

Lacking Advertised featuresFive updates promoting these features but not available on iPads. Clearly FALSE advertising!!!! “What's New - Paywall indicator: There's a new icon on articles that may require a subscr know before you open the story. Let us know about paywalls we may have the three-dot menu reporting feature. - New History tab (clock icon) in your Profile shows the last 400 items you Flipboard so you can easily find recently read items.”.Version: 4.2.122

Hope you like adsExcellent concept that is totally broken by the constant ads and popups. Since the app uses its own browser, user preferences are not remembered and there is no way of blocking any of this, so you have to dismiss cookie consent messages on virtually every article you open, then deal with all the obnoxious ads everywhere. Could easily be solved if the reading mode was enabled by default, but the developer actually discourages its use and even add their own ads to the newsfeed as well! Just becomes overwhelming.Version: 4.2.160

RubbishYou need to sort out your app. I have been using this over a year. A few things concern me. 1 pop up advertising and redirects. For this to work your app must have given some kind of permissions for third parties to do this. 2. Many articles can’t be read because of “subscription requirements” i always report this, but do you actually do anything about it? What is the point of your app if you can’t read an article?!? 3. Privacy issues you know apple has given us the opportunity to see what apps are doing in regards to privacy invasions. Well my weekly report of Flipboard is quite terrifying… What exactly are you doing with all that information, that I DID NOT expressly give you permission for. What do you need my contacts for? Thankfully i’m not an idiot. A lot of my info are “burner” why would I store my real information for the likes of you to STEAL. Listen up people unless you plan to use IAPs Apple Pay please do not use your real name, email etc. where possible use disposable cards. It will go a long way to protect your privacy from unscrupulous developers data mining you for profit…..Version: 4.2.154

Do not update to this version - much slowerI am a long time Flipboard user and recently I updated to iOS 11 on my iPad. I also updated the Flipboard app to the current one and that’s when the problems begun. The app is MUCH slower than the previous one. It takes long time to load ANY article from any source. There is also no option to block pop-ups (or at least one that works) so you are bombarded with ads and subscription nags. Come on Flipboard, blocking pop up ads is easy and almost every other browser has it. Another annoyance that still persists is the inability to disable the Cover stories. Let me choose what I want to read please. Seems like the best version was the original version. Downhill since then. Two stars, hope you can fix your problems so I can change it to five. Latest iPad with plenty of storage and latest iOS. Worked fine on previous Flipboard ver..Version: 4.2

Content good, many interface issuesLongtime user. So many ads recently. Many sites also have a pop up to accept cookies. Lots of clicks to access content. Then quite a few flipper site recommendations are behind firewalls. Flipboard has become a frustrating user experience. Why no global option for cookies displayed in Flipboard app? Why no option to block firewalled sites? Why no advert limit? A paid tier, even a subscription is needed or it’s time to move on and delete this app..Version: 4.2.140

Cookies cookies advertising GDPR - madnessThis app has got to a state of pure madness. Nearly every page I visit requests to track me in some way. The need to accept cookies from so many sources per page is crazy. One information provider I just removed had 36 different cookies to read one article ...! Then there are the conditions they just assume you’ll click accept to. I’d really suggest reading these before tapping the oh so easy accept and save button. I know this is free content you provide but the price is starting to get too high and too hidden as to why you need all this information. Data harvesting is starting to become the norm but the extent is worryingly in you face(book) with Flipboard recently..Version: 4.2.47

Well-packaged bait for online news servicesThis app is very well-arranged to my taste - the interface and user control over content is great. But each morning I read the news on Flipboard, about 25% of the stories that I select require a subscription. You can’t tell before selecting the story whether you’re selecting a story or an ad. I just opened a story that looked interesting. The article opened long enough for me to read the first sentence, but then the article was overlaid with an opaque banner saying “to continue reading, purchase a subscription to [so-and-so online publication]”. I don’t mind if an online news service expects me to pay for their material, but wasting my time with even a few seconds and clicks of baiting enticement is aggravating. This is what you should expect from Flipboard. If you don’t mind this, or if you don’t mind signing up for a huge number of online subscriptions, you may really enjoy Flipboard..Version: 4.2.33

Ruined with adsThey now have ads that you can’t pass without waiting on a timer!! Absolutely ruining the app!.Version: 4.2.131

Could be so good, but…This is a great app in theory, and 80% of the time it works the way it should. That other 20% is what’s so frustrating though. It’ll just freeze up for no apparent reason. It will just shut down for no apparent reason. You’ll be flipping though articles, and then it’ll just refresh and go back to the start of the 80 articles you just flipped through. There’s also issues like being able to do some function at one point, and then one day it just doesn’t exist anymore (such as sorting magazines a specific way and other minor things that just go poof for no apparent reason). And before I get a response from someone about updating the app or download the most recent iOS, I’m using a phone that’s less than six months old with the most recent iOS, and I search for a Flipboard update once a week in hopes of an update fixing the minor issues, so it’s not anything on my end. And I know others are experiencing the same thing. They wonder out loud why I’m such an ardent Flipboard shill. It’s because I see the potential, and quite frankly, I feel like I have invested at lot into my Flipboard over the years I’ve been using it. So frustrating..Version: 4.3.22

Formerly great app now a bloated spammy mess! For a long time flipboard was my go to app on my phone and iPad and presented news and articles in a really interesting and dynamic way. Sadly those days are over as inevitably the app has become filled with advertiser content much of which is spam. News articles are over repeated and despite trying to filter out content that doesn’t interest me I find myself flipping past articles about the Kardashians and other so called celebrities too often. Never thought I would see the day that I decided to delete this app but it’s got to be done. What a bloated mess!!.Version: 4.2.15

Lagging and SlowI have been using flipboard for at least 5 years or more. You can say I am a experienced user. Unfortunately the last week it’s terrible, articles loading very slow and the app is lagging. I now need to wait for several seconds before I can read an article. Sometimes articles show and then disappears. I have always been a huge fan and I have told many friends about the app, but unfortunately not the case anymore. I will have to look for a new app. Come on guys fix this issue, it is not a pleasant experience anymore..Version: 4.2.108

Too many adsI’m going to delete it because of too many ads..Version: 4.2.17

My topics were all deletedYesterday I launched Flipboard to find that all of my selected topics were deleted. After trying to figure out if there was someway to recover them I started a new list of topics to follow. Several of the new sites I previously followed are no longer available. Anyway I can’t find out what happened. It’s the same old Flipboard. Things quit working and it’s a blank wall you face when trying to find out what’s wrong. And what about paywalls? You drop me at paywalls, many of which I have subscriptions to but you don’t allow access to password managers, so I am blocked because I follow advice to use different passwords everywhere. You guys need to hire some good coders. My guess is that’s too expensive. Added 5/7/22: Now, Flipboard cannot keep my place in the feed. If a story links to a separate app or to Safari, when I go back to Flipboard it goes to the opening screen and my place in the feed is lost. I know coders are expensive but you really should hire some..Version: 4.2.143

Great way to read the news but...The last update caused a very annoying change in how the ads work. Now any ad for an app in the App Store causes the App Store to launch that page in the store when you try to “flip” to the next page. Really very annoying. I’m assuming they did this on purpose to generate better revenue..Version: 4.2.17

Tech industry leftism at its worstFlipboard really want you to hate Donald Trump. Every Cover Story collection is riddled with hate articles about the American President, and pretty much everyone else who doesn’t agree with progressive left wing ideology. Supposedly curated articles are often plagued with pop up ads, pop overs, floating video ads, and a lot of garbage content. There is a facility to mute various sites, but flipboard often disable the mute button if they really want you to get all those nasty ads..Version: 4.2.96

Used to be 5 star but not so good any moreUsed to be great but many news articles now require paid subscriptions and you aren’t able to remove those from your feed do they are annoying. Advertising has been creeping in and the algorithm for the summary feed seems to be skewed towards certain feeds which are probably sponsored. All that aside it’s easy to customise and great for creating your own magazines..Version: 4.2.67

New update arrow buttonUsed to be able to hold this in one hand and flip, choose and go back with my thumb. Now they have moved the back arrow to the top of the screen and you need both hands. Who comes up with these innovations?.Version: 4.2.160

Quality down , ad revenue upLots of stories require a subscription and lately a phishing ad about winning some pots from Amazon has brought the quality of this news feed down substantially. Too bad , used to be a quality read.Version: 4.3.22

Good but unhelpful communication about posting guidelines.Slowly but surely the developer is fixing the many bugs in the app, so that’s good. The coverage of news is fair, but many sources are behind paywalls. This is not Flipboard’s fault, but it is a limitation. The reason why I gave the app 1-star is that I received an e-mail saying that I had violated the rules of posting and that some of my posts have been taken down. However, no additional information was given. The guidelines have about 30 points which you are meant to follow. I have been active posting for years without an issue. Thus, I have no idea which guideline I broke. I would have given the app 4 stars if this issue had not arisen, so if you just want to read news this might be a good app to try. Update: The developer simply responded with a link to the guidelines for posting, which I have made clear I have already read. The app’s help link implied I could talk to an actual person, but also sent the guidelines link without further comment or interaction. A very disappointing response..Version: 4.2.98

DO NOT DOWNLOAD! Politics SHOVED down your throat!Update - The official response from Flipboard (not the reply they posted here but the email that they sent me)…basically they said “too bad you don’t like our updates. Politics are a hot topic and regardless of your choice, politics (and our political agenda) will always be shoved down your throat! Your topic choices mean nothing.” I’ve deleted the app from all of my devices. What an arrogant response from the developer! Original Review - I was so excited when I saw the customization options added to Flipboard in the “For You” section. I chose only a couple categories for my “For You”…sports, technology and cars (or electric cars don’t remember which). Ever since then, I’d say 80% of all the articles in my “For You” are completely unrelated to my topics and focus around a specific political ideology that Flipboard is trying to shove down our throats. So, I’ve basically stopped using the app. The update is a major mistake! PS - nearly 75% of articles don’t load at all after updating to iPadOS 15. Completely useless app!.Version: 4.2.119

This used to be great! Why do I have to see so much advertising, this is NOT a free app. It used to be great when it first launch a few years back but it has honestly become such a pain to use with so many pop ups destroying any pleasure. It’s easier to tell links to open in safari, that way the text doesn’t keep jumping as random adds load! What a crap app this has become. If your reading this review why not have a look at other news app and vote with your money, maybe the developers will get the message then..Version: 4.2.119

No offline readingUnfortunately Too many ads using data..Version: 4.2.14

Adverts as articles = badSo Flipboard have decided that advertising revenue is more important than article content. This latest update sneakily brings with it a new monetisation: advertising masquerading as articles. Embedded amongst your articles you will now finding advertisements that look like an article but are not. Advertising inside an article is expected and accepted but these fake articles are not acceptable even though they are tagged as advertising. Flipboard is no longer my news aggregator..Version: 4.2.33

Slow to the point of annoyingThis used to be my favourite news app, but now is so slow that I generally go to Microsoft or google.Version: 4.3.22
