✓ This used to be goodYes this used to be good, stories that have been on for 2or 3 days down as 1 day, I used to watch video stories but now you have to watch a 30 sec advert before you can see what you wanted to see! And if an advert comes on with a X in the corner then it drops you out altogether and you have to start all over again Looking for a better news channel Geoff Marshall P.S. ✓ No “good news”The app itself is fine, but the stories are mostly negative angles on events or just plain negative events. For example, vandalism, deadly accidents, murders, hate crimes, etc. Politics comes in for it too where there are no positive stories on what the various leaders or governments around the world are doing, only negative or neutral ones. Unless you have a bulletproof psyche, the written content will get you down. Best to stick to the one-minute news video and just get the headlines. No wonder young people don’t bother with the news because it’s so depressing if you only read it from this app..Version: 5.2.0
✓ The worst version update everI don’t understand what has happened to this app with the recent version update. All the sections and various topics are gone and so is the ability to add them back. What I liked about the previous app was the variety of content and the ability to adapt it to your interests. Now you have only the top stories which you don’t get to chose and are of no interest ti me. There has been no communication on this whatsoever. I keep looking online, but nothing. ✓ BiasedI love the international coverage but the US coverage is very one sided. Recent example: The Trump administration have repeatable said his withdraw of troops is not a “Mission Accomplished” situation and the fight against ISIS has entered a new era. While I don’t like the decision, you keep saying he said they he said the fight is over. He said the caliphate ie the “country” of ISIS is defeated. His point is, and you know this is that they are going to be like Al Ciada, and the Taliban, still dangerous, but still there but a shadow of themselves, but you keep saying/implying Trump said it’s all over. ✓ Where have the settings goneThe new app has a new look and feel which is fine, but you are unable to change the topics, personalise the format or select just what you want. ✓ Bad updateYour curated list of Topics is useless and shows what you think I want to see - well surprise surprise, I don't. At least offer a reasonable alternative! With Top stories I have to endlessly scroll to get to sections I want. If I’m lucky that is. For example Australia doesn’t even appear on the list but Lo! I can actually find all the articles if you randomly show me an article already tagged Australia then I click on the tag. Wouldn’t a reliable way to access that content be better? ✓ Latest version is USELESSI loved the old format. In addition to the general news, I could select specific topics - archaeology, medicine, science, climate change, regional news for the UK and international and many more. Now I get a very basic selection, over emphasizing several sports I am not interested in. There is currently NO way to customize the topics to reflect my various interests . ✓ Content good, delivery poor at timesI assume this app takes articles written for the English market and edits them for the American market which is fine. However, in the process of doing so there seem to be some glaring errors that could be easily amended. I fail to believe this would be allowed under direct Beeb governance. Proof reading seems to have been thrown out the window along with spell check. Simple things that are actually quite important in an app like this. ✓ The top world news - without regional steeringSometimes there appears to be a lot of African news when tuning in from NZ. And I notice being in Ireland today the live stream has more local content. ✓ Latest update rendered almost unusableI used to love this app, but their recent update has rendered the app almost unusable. I have to pull down the screen to refresh the Home Screen, and that doesn’t work the first time, half the time. The stories are so large now that you have to scroll a LOT more to see more than one or two headlines at a time, and it is just unpleasant to use now. This used to be my go-to app for news, but I don’t think I have the patience to put up with the current version anymore. ✓ Live Stream is terribleSave yourself the hassle of downloading this app. I was hopeful that the recent update would fix the live stream problems, but nope. I get about 15 minutes of broadcast and then the app pauses the stream and then ultimately crashes or hangs there expecting you to unpause it every few minutes until it finally crashes. Strangely I have had the same crashing issue of World Service on other apps too, so it is not specific to this app, but more specific to their stream, which is now no longer worth trying to listen to due to how broken it is. I know that the world wants broken up news reports instead of a proper stream though.....oh wait. I have been having this issue for over six months and no amount of bug reports has seen improvements made. Others in the reviews report the same thing and the developers clearly aren’t capable of fixing it or don’t care..Version: 5.12.0
✓ New Format Ruins the AppThe new format just rolled out ruins what used to be my go-to news app. You can no longer customize the topics you see. You will now read what they want you to read in the order they want you to read it. I gave it two stars only because the football and cricket and sports news is relegated to the sports section where the old format sometimes had soccer as literally 15 of the top 20 stories. ✓ New update w/ advertising = awfulI would not having updated bc the last app was totally fine with no bugs. This new one has advertising that ‘floats’ over the articles preventing you from reading them so you have to scroll up and down to get to the article you want to read. On top of that when I go back to the main screen after reading, it loses my place so I have to scroll down to find the article again. Too much scrolling!!! ✓ Dumbing down of the appThe new update is horrendous. Felt like I was going insane as I can no longer see the news I want as ‘my news’ that I could select has disappeared and I am now forced to scroll through headlines and categories I have no interest in. ✓ Newest version ruined appThis app used to be my #1 source for news. But recently it’s full of adds that obscure some content. Then in the latest update, they removed carousel view. I loved being able to quickly glance through many stories sorted by region. Now the story headers are larger & I can only see 4 or so on my screen at a time (plus ads, of course). It feels frustrating and claustrophobic. I sense I’ll miss a lot of content and be forced toward certain stories more than with the old view. ✓ What have you done?This latest update is terrible. Why have you got rid of the My News? The function to load with the topics and news for your area or region of interest was great. I live outside the UK and like to keep up-to-date with what’s going on in the UK. I would read the Latest News and Top Stories and then go to My News, now that has all been taken away with this update. The other annoying things is not being able to swipe through to the next story - why would you remove that? ✓ Awful UpdateI have had this app for years. It WAS my favorite news app. I could control what I wanted to see with the My News section and focus on new information from Science, Technology, Europe, World, and of course my favorite football club. These options no longer exist and neither does this app on my phone. I am so disappointed in the new update. It was refreshing to be able to see news that gets lost in the usual repeating cycle that is mostly tragic news these days. Those options are gone. I can see everything on the new update that I see repeated on every other app or news channel. The update took away the most desirable and important part of the app; its ability to allow people to personalize it and see a variety of news and not just the headlines of the day. ✓ New Update Has Changed How I Get NewsThe app updated about a month ago to the new “modernized” format, and since then I have spent significantly less time on the app because of how poorly designed it has become. I’m not against changing the app if it would result in improvements to the user experience. However, I don’t believe that is the case. Issues I have with the current version are as follows: -The “My News” section no long appears, and none of the five tabs (“Top News”, “Topics”, “Popular”, “Videos”, “Live”) replace that functionality, making finding news in specific categories (e.g. “Gaming,” which used to have its own category) frustrating. -No way to set the topics of the topics tab, as far as I’m aware. -No search functionality, as far as I can tell after about a month. -The popular tab lists the top 10 most read articles, and it used to label them 1-10, now it does not, even though there is still always exactly 10. -Popular tab has the articles spaced much wider, only allowing me to view about half of them on one screen. -Popular tab used to display the category of the news article along with the time since last update, now it only displays the time. The only improvements to the app after the update are the addition of the “time to read” metric at the top of each article, and the fact that the overall look of the articles didn’t change too severely..Version: 2023.1.0

✓ From 5 stars to 1 starI’ve loved this app ever since I’ve gotten a smartphone after Blackberry. It was the first app I would download every single time I would replace my phone…. Unfortunately, the latest iteration of this app has got to be the absolute worst. No search possibility, no customisation, front page news is sometimes more than a day old. I suppose it’s a genius move to save on the cost of hosting all these articles by having them curated? If really you want to break records in how bad it has become, just add a ton of adverts, especially those that look like genuine articles that asks you to flip though 60 pages filled with ads and never get to the conclusion … you will be able to bury the app for good. ✓ Hating the new user experienceAbsolutely hate some of the design choices they’ve made in the new app, especially how the app will hijack your reading experience and try to take over your screen to force you to view an ad - absolutely the WORST. ✓ Auto pop-up ad’sAs a Pom overseas I’ve been using it for years. Disappointing that it now seems to auto jump to apples App Store to promote and advertise installing silly game apps. ✓ New version!Why have you changed what Was perfect? The new look is unwelcoming and unfriendly. I live abroad and read the news every day to keep in touch with what was happening around the world. ✓ Some issuesGreat reporting. This is my goto source, but I have some qualms. The biggest is the annoying tendency of the app to refresh to the top of the page whenever it wants as I’m scrolling through and reading various stories. By the time I get to the end I’ve had to find my place again several times. 2nd issue is that sometimes I come across articles that are a couple sentences long with no real plot or story. ✓ Visual issues with new layoutSimply states the viewing grid is now locked to the vertical on my iPhone and as you can no longer pinch and zoom the text is too small to read easily. ✓ No customisation of preferred TopicsI have used the App for years, and one of the things I liked was that I could choose what topics I want displayed and the order. Since they have updated the app I can no longer do this. ✓ Advertising insults news stories!The advertising in this application is extremely inappropriate! I was watching a news video about how a joint venture between BHP and a Brazilian company created a disaster that took out entire towns and killed over 300 people. BHP were held accountable for their actions and charged with negligence! But before the news video started a commercial came up for BHP showing how good of a company they were and how they are the future! This was an insult to the victims and friends and family that are following this story. This has been screen recorded and will be reported to the advertising standards boards in both the UK and Australia. This advertising before news stories sometimes is a contradiction to the story you are trying to watch/read. I cannot support this app when such carelessness in advertising is happening. I will be Pursuing this and fighting for change for appropriate advertising. ✓ Lousy new look, took great app and ruined itTo say I loath your new app is to say the sun sheds a small amount of light. If I could rate it with negative numbers I would. You took away all the functionality of the old app to apply glitzy and bling instead. ✓ New app UX is sadly atrocious.The previous version of the app had its quirks but the UX was mostly sufficient across the board. This new look is unfortunately the inverse of that experience. There’s far too much white space for something that contains details on a smaller screen. Search is worse than it was. ✓ Missing the old layoutThe new update has ruined the UX of the app. Gone are the options of what topics to follow. There are also fewer and smaller photos and lots of white space. There is so much news out there, it would be good for this app to broaden its horizons. It gives a bit of news from the most "noisy" places (repeatedly), but fails miserably in wider coverage. The main problem that I have with it is that if you want to read one of the stories and you happen to be way down in the column on the story, when you finish reading it and go back to the column it puts you all the way back up to the top of the column instead of where you were.
