✓ No alternativesFrankly, this app is the best out yet. Simply because there are no other alternatives. Comics have usually fairly lousy quality when viewed on the retina display and the majority of comics are a few years out of date and have huge holes in issues. I sat myself down to get into the Batman comics only to find it started at issue 400 something and then suddenly skipped 200 issues up to 645. Very disappointing but I can find no alternatives..Version: 0
✓ Nice app poor choice of comicsThe app itself is excellent (4 star) but the actual choice of released comics is very poor especially compared to Marvel who have an excellent and extensive range of there comics both new and old and frequently (I think it's once or twice a month) release a few random free ones that are then yours. ✓ Kill 2 Birds With 1 Stone DC.As someone else stated there needs to be a subscription service now, in fact it would make more sense to fold the entirety of this app into The DC Universe app and allow premium subscribers to read all the comics at no extra cost. ✓ Major issue with current versionThe newest update still retains my old comics but I cannot purchase new ones anymore! There is a workaround though, I can purchase via the comixoloy app and cancel the download and re-download onto the DC app (i prefer to have my DC comics within the dedicated DC app). Speaking of which, DC/Comixology really need to work out a better way to organize the library for users who are buying dozens of titles. Surely a good idea to take care of your most valuable customers. It's been quite some time since the last update and I'm hoping DC can fix the app soon..Version: 3.1

✓ It's complicated..All right. Let me start by saying I've been a HUGE DC fan since 1973. I didn't even read my first Marvel until the 1980s. Even then DC was always number one in my heart. So as far as the content goes and the readability of the comics, I couldn't love this app more. I LOVE LOVE LOVE being able to see each panel much larger than it is on the printed page – it makes good art especially enjoyable! But I also have the marvel universe app and for about $70 a year I get thousands and thousands of comics. It's just an unbeatable value. As far as monetary value, the marvel app just blows DC out of the water! I have downloaded about 2000 DC comics, the vast majority of which cost $.99 each but a significant number were $5.99 or more. In the past three years I've spent about $2100 on DC Comics and $210 on Marvel comics. 10X more on DC. What? And what I've got to show for it is about 2000 DC comics at my fingertips and about 20,000 marvel comics at my fingertips. OK, if I accept that injustice as being the price I have to pay for being a DC fan, couldn't they at least mitigate the pain by offering a sale every week? Why doesn't DC Comics offer a sale on digital comics every single week???? It would cost them Jack squat and they would garnish some goodwill in addition to beaucoup bucks! Just a quick complaint that they only put Vertigo comics on sale maybe twice a year if you're lucky. Again, costs them nothing/beaucoup bucks..Version: 3.10.3

✓ AlrightThe thing that really bugs me about this app is how the alerts don't function for the comics. I had a few alerts set to tell me when a new comic had updated, and I have never once had a notification..Version: 3.2
✓ A major disappointment. AVOID!Download speeds are terrible, when comics download at all. I haves aged a grand total one one comic...and quite frankly the on screen formatting is awful. I use my iPhone to view digital comics content, and DC have made no effort at all to make that content accessible or pleasurable to read at all. The pages are not scaled to for the iPhone screen, you have to pinch-in and zoom in order to read ANY dialogue on EVERY page, leaving you unable to appreciate what in many cases is stunning artwork alongside the story. IDW and Dark Horse both have far superior apps that essentially deliver the full comic book reading experience on an iPhone/iPad/iPod touch. DC, a giant of the industry, has produced a shoddy app that frequently crashes and provides a sub-standard read that is as far removed from the full comic book reading experience as it can possibly get. ✓ Not a fix but better than nothingI don't think the missing buy button is anything to do with the update because it was happening before I even updated the app. If you really want to download the comics just download the comixology app which is still working fine. After buying the books off of the comixology app you can get them on to your dc app by doing the following: 1) sign out on the dc app 2) sign back into the dc app 3) search for the book via the purchases tab 4) there should now be the option to download it (if you don't do steps 1and 2 you the download button wont be there) This is pretty annoying and really needs fixing, I'd have thought it was the reason they were doing the maintenance but obviously I was wrong..Version: 3.1
✓ WARNINGThis is now the second time that this app has failed to start, leaving me with no access to my DC digital comics. This is now the second time that the best solution that Comixology could offer is delete the app, re-install it, and then re-download purchases. That wasn’t so bad the first time, when I didn’t have many digital comics, but now — can you even imagine how long it will take to re-download 25 Gigabytes of purchases? Too long! I haven’t yet been able to bring myself to start that long process. I’m a collector and I was going to buy at least as many more DC comics, but now I have to stop and ask myself if this would be wise. An app that doesn’t have programmed-in comprehensive error-recovery either means that Comixology programmers are amateurs or that DC is unwilling to pay them enough to make a proper job of it. Yes, I could recover from back-up, but Comixology tell me that a per-app restore is not possible, so it’s restore the entire iPad or nothing. Well, I have done work in other apps since my last backup, and I’m not willing to lose that work just because the DC Comics app is useless. (When it does work, it’s good.).Version: 3.1

I've been using the regular ComiXology app since, and I've not tried the most updated version(s). --------------------- This app loses one star for frequent crashing. It loses a second star for offering the first issue of some older series (Like "52"), which succeed in getting me interested, but then not having the rest of the series available! Why bother teasing us with the first issue of a series (in some cases for free) if the rest (which have been published long ago) are not made available? That said, it is super-cool to be able to download these older series from my comfy chair at home. ✓ Issues with reading older comicsI have been using this app for years haven’t really had any issues until today when I wanted to read some of my older comics, so I downloaded them and went to click to read on them in the series tab it open then closes. ✓ Good, but be warnedThis is a great app for reading comics. While it will never take the place of real paper comics it is readable and a good way to get hold of back issues i may have missed. HOWEVER you should not buy comics from this app. Comixology (who powers this app) have a website where you can log in with the same account and see your library AND where I've found the comics are significantly cheaper. One comic that should have cost me 2.29 in the app was 1.99 on the website. I should make it clear that this is the same company. If you buy something on the website you can then download it onto the app with no additional purchase. ✓ Lossy Compression AlgorithmsI can’t prove it, but in at least the issues I’ve purchased, DC seem to be applying a lossy compression scheme (think JPEG or similar) to the digital representations of their comics. This results in ugly compression artifacts that make reading an unpleasant experience. It's simply never acceptable to use lossy bitmap compression for text or hand-drawn color graphics - there are existing lossless algorithms that compress nearly as well and cause no drop in quality from the reference material. I have no doubt DC want the experience of reading a comic on an iPad to be just as good as reading on paper, and I'm optimistic they will make fixing this defect their utmost priority. Until that time however, I simply can't recommend this application..Version: 3.10.4

✓ Update does not installI have tried to install the update for this since it was released, but it gets as far as loading the new logo, then reverts to the old logo and stops - the update remains in the App Store update folder and I cannot get rid of it. (this is on a 2gen iPod Touch running iOS 4.2.1) I had high hopes that the crashing issues I had with the earlier versions of the app would be fixed by this upgrade - but seeing as the upgrade itself crashes out, I'm not optimistic..Version: 1.2
