Phantasy Star Classics for Negative User Reviews

Saving system sucks and sound is offDunno what it wrong with the Audio but it doesn't sound the same as I remember it. Not as crisp. Kinda like listening to it through a tin can. Also the saving system is horrible instead of saving at the save centres throughout towns in this game you have to manually open a save menu which is stupid and not like the original game. Also requires you to log into the game centre so if you're out of wifi range you can't load OR save. So stupid. Otherwise the game plays pretty true to the original. Still a great game. Only reason I gave it 3 stars is because I love this game. Pretty crappy app though. The inability to play without wifi ruins it for me.Version: 3.1.2

Not workingI used to play this on my iPod Touch 3rd gen, but on my iPhone 4S with iOS 6, crashes when you hit new game. Tried reinstalling, no change. Please update this, Sega..Version: 1.0.1

Can’t save due to unmovable adsI absolutely love the Phantasy Star game for starters. Having theses games on my phone is like retro nostalgia for me, a total trip down memory lane. I use the free version and don’t really mind watching the annoying ads because I understand that the developer needs to make a buck. No problem there. What I do have a problem with is the ads that wont let you save your game! Now most ads go through their 15-30 second play time and let you press X to exit, with the game finishing the save process afterwards. But there are some ads ( LIKE THAT INFURIATING “TIK TOK” AD!) that absolutely will not let you exit the ad screen!!! That is REALLY frustrating when you’ve been grinding levels for an hour and suddenly you can’t reach the save screen! Lesson for Developers: If the ad doesn’t give you a way to exit it, you need to get rid of it..Version: 4.0.3

Update lost my saves- dev blames meSo I don’t usually write reviews but this was terrible customer service and no resolution. The update that made this the three-headed ad monster was very buggy and my saves from PSII were lost. Now these were ones tied to my gamecenter account and should be backed up in the cloud but the dev team just decided it was my device and not their buggy mess of an update. I waited over two months and finally got the oops sorry it wasn’t u it was you response. Sorry guys, no more from me. You ruined this game and as much as I love PSII I’m not starting over again especially in light of the contact. Buyer beware the games are good but the ads are too much and it’s not worth he headache.Version: 4.0.3

Love game but...Glad they added 3 & 4 but it’s been nearly impossible to play either game until I pay for the ads to be removed. Trying to play ps3 now and for 20 minutes I’ve been trying to get the “start” button to work just to log in and play. Had this same issue on ps4 before I finally paid to have ads removed and then the start button would work 75% of the time when I’d load up the app. Guess I wait a for more years for a fix..Version: 4.0.1

Crashes with each saveLooks good enough but needs some debugging. For one player games you should not need the Game Center. Was not tested..Version: 4.1.0

Great to have the old games, but one bug creates an issueUpdate: still no fix for cloud save or quick save, so I am reducing my rating to two stars. It is limiting my ability to play the game. See below for original review: I’ve been playing Phantasy Star II, and I paid to remove ads. The game works well and is like I remembered it though the graphics are a bit blocky on a higher resolution screen. Music is what I remembered also. Wouldn’t it be great if Sega did remakes like Square/Enix does with their old games? However, there are two big things that keep this from being a five star game: 1. The quick save feature not only doesn’t work, but it crashes the game when used with PS2 on both iPhone 8 and iPad. So, you think you are saving the game, but you crash instead. Saving the game like you would on the old console at a data memory center works just fine. However, I want the quick save to work like it is supposed to. I hope they update and fix this. 2. The original Phantasy Star is not in this collection and is nowhere to be found on ios as far as I can tell. I know it’s an old 8 but Master System game, but I want to play it..Version: 4.1.0

This is not how you bring back classicsJust make it a paid app, honestly. The ads are incredibly distracting and intrusive. Worse, these games have terrible features. There's no rendering options, screen size options, everything is super fuzzy... the WORST is that there's no control transparency options so your controls cover the majority of important story or battle details. You did wrong Sega with your classics Sega, yet again.Version: 3.0.2

Makes sense for Mobile, Performance needs workThe original Phantasy Star series was such a great, fresh collection of JRPGs. Unlike precision/action games, these games make much more sense in a mobile setting! Performance needs some work, as do most of the Sega Forever games, which is a shame because the soundtrack is top notch. Would love to see more of the Phantasy Star series get rereleased (especially 4), and would LOVE to see new entries in the series that harken back to this era. Would also love to see new entries in this series show up in the west. Like PSO2. *ahem*.Version: 3.0.2

Saves are lost...Great idea, but the Cloud Saves are constantly lost. It is insane to offer such a feature in a long game like this just to completely fail in executing it. A complete shame..Version: 3.0.2

Love the game but...You cannot save your game reliably, it fails most of the time. I've lost hours..Version: 3.0.2

Ruined by the save systemThe controls are great, the ability to choose how you view the pixel art is great, the music seems to lag a bit occasionally but I can forgive that. But the save system. You can only save if you’re online and “signed in.” I paid the $5 to remove ads. I’d pay more to save on my phone. I can only assume you’re collecting data of some kind, because the lag and frequent crashes caused by trying to save is absolutely maddening and I see no reason to ruin a game this way unless you’re profiting some other way. If I’m right? Shame on you. If I’m wrong, then what in the world are you doing?.Version: 4.0.1

Amazing game but cant be completedPS2 is by far my favorite game of all time, but Sega did a pretty poor job porting it to the iPad. There are bugs all through the game, but most annoyingly is that the save doesn’t work, and you still need to use the in-game save for teleports. One accidental “no” and all progress is lost up to the point of their “save state feature”. *WARNING: spoilers ahead* 2nd, the last part of the game is bugged, so you cannot finish. When you talk to Lutz for the first time after gathering all of the Nei items and receive the Neisword, the sound bugs out, and never works again (even through saves). Sure you can live without sounds, and as you continue to teleport to Noah and continue to play all seems fine (without sound of course), but if you try to teleport back from Noah via the Neisword, which you will, it locks the game. It was fun while it lasted, but I guess I better break out the Genesis to finish this game again......Version: 3.1.2

Almost GreatPhantasy Star 4 was my favorite game growing up. This is everything you would want from the game except it’s glitchy. The glitch occurs with the save/sign in function. To load saved progress, I have to login 2-3 times. Sometimes when saving, it gives the spinning wheel and never saves. This can cause loss of all progress since last save. If this glitch was fixed, it’s an easy 5 stars..Version: 4.0.3

Problems logging inThe games are good I use to own them on sega Genesis now I have a problem with the games not linking to the server I need this fixed asap I am trying to beat the games like I did when I had the genesis this is getting ridiculous because I payed for the games I expect to load my saved data and I can’t now please fix this problem.Version: 4.1.3

Can’t start the gameI played this back when it was only PS2, and I was pleasantly surprised to find out they had added 3 & 4. As soon as the app loads and I picked the game I wanted to play, it took me to a page that was lagging like crazy, I would have to tap a button multiple times before it registered. Finally I managed to get the game going only to find that the “Start” button doesn’t do anything. It lights up to signify that it’s being pushed, but nothing happens. Seeing as how you need to press start to begin the game, I can’t find any way of actually starting the game. Huge disappointment and I’m very glad I decided to see how it played before dropping money to remove ads..Version: 4.0.3

Freezes before you can saveLove the game. Before you go to save, you have to watch an ad, but the game freezes more often than not when loading the ad. It’s too hard and long of game to play without saving. You can spend money to remove ads, but at the moment I definitely wouldn’t recommend it because who knows what other glitches you might experience during gameplay. Why don’t they play the ads after you save, so no data is lost?.Version: 3.2.2

What a mess this is.I wasn't completely enthusiastic with this version of PS2. Sega put out a far more superior version came out years ago, with no ads or invasive features--it was just the game. But I guess some people got greedy and decided to pull that version, and replace it with this one, where you have to pay to remove ads. That's highway robbery any way you look at it, but I tolerated it because I adore this game and wanted to play it again on my phone (I guess I'm the typical sucker that these types of developers love to cheat). Then a new update comes out, and guess what? I can't access my saved file. At all. Every time I try, it completely crashes the app. And having a Game Center account doesn't help at all--the game has completely erased itself. But the game still manages to shove stupid ads in my face. Doesn't crash then. Way to go, Sega. *golf clap* UPDATE: It's lagging now too. Horribly. And the audio is completely unlistenable. I didn't realize "upgrade" means "to destroy the functionality of something that didn't need fixing in the first place." I will never buy anything associated with Sega again--I just can't afford to keep getting ripped off..Version: 3.1.1

Phantasy Star series is so good, but....Why on earth do we have to be online to save our progress? I paid for the ad free version and if I cannot actually play the game without being online, I would actually prefer my money back.Version: 4.0.3

Can crash if you have to tab in and out and save is faulty in game and outGame has crashed a time or two and the ashamed the save thing isn’t sorted out still, made playing on Xbox great, but I’ve lost hours of game play due to this makes it frustrating especially after putting money into this. Elsewise it’s awesome just wish theyd get that sorted out.Version: 4.1.0

Great Game Marred By Terrible EmulatorInitially when I had downloaded this game, I was excited to play one of my all time favorite RPGs and the whole reason I purchased a Sega Genesis back in the day. I quickly fired up the game, paid to remove ads, and began on my nostalgic journey. At first, the game played pretty well. I was enjoying playing and remembering a lot more of the game than I thought I would have. I did notice that the music and sound was a bit off, but the core game was still intact. And then the problems started to show up. First of all, when you pay to remove ads, you still get a splash page ad upon launching the game. This is unacceptable for having paid to remove ads. Next, you could save your game via either the save places in the game or the cloud save. I relied on the cloud save a few times in addition to the in-game save. Frequently, the cloud save said that it saved only for me to find out that it did not and I would lose an hour or more of progress. Now I have updated the game only to find out that not only are all of my in-game saves gone, but you can’t even make new ones. In addition, I have cloud saves and I can load them, but it will crash the entire app every single time. Take this review as a warning. Do not put any money towards this app! In fact, don’t even bother trying to play it at all. An epic RPG game without a working save game system is completely worthless. If I could get a refund, I would!.Version: 3.1.1

UnplayableThe save feature doesn’t work on my 6s. It keeps saying I have to sign into the “Game Center”. When I try to sign in it fails every time. Not being able to save makes this game unplayable. Don’t download. I thought purchasing ad-free would help, but nope..Version: 3.1.2

Great game from my childhood but ..My game data/save keep disappearing I started saving multiple times on all 3 slots hoping not to lose my save. Today I logged in and all 3 save points are set back 2-3 days . Deleting app . You can keep the $2.79 , thanks for trying Sega . Guess there's a reason why you fell off the map in game/system development . Thanks for your response but , the cloud save through Game Centre saves delete or have roll backs also.Version: 3.0.2

I don't recommend in its current stateI paid for this game prior to the updates. The original version was ad free, this one is not. Even once I restored my purchase I was continually pestered to subscribe to the mailing service. In addition to this, the game will not allow me to save my progress. I have tried both in game and by signing into my Game Center account and neither work. I enjoyed my initial play through back in 2012 but at this point there isn't much I can do with it. I can not recommend this game at this time..Version: 3.1.1

Ads too intrusiveYou have to watch a long commercial each time you want to save and to load. The on screen controller is far too large and no option to resize or make transparent..Version: 3.0.2

Good memeIt doesn't even work.Version: 3.0.2

Sub bugs fixed, but others introducedThe latest upgrade with PS3&4 was a pleasant surprise, but the ads seem to invade the games a but more. Open app, watch an ad. Load a game, watch an ad. Save, watch and ad. Pause or minimize app, watch an ad. It wouldn’t be as frustrating if ads didn’t freeze the app. The potential to lose your progress is too great. Plus, with the addition of 3&4, the in-game sound of PS2 seems to have broken, which makes it a lot less fun to play. And using the Neisword in PS2 still crashes the game, so be warned..Version: 4.0.1

Completely RuinedThis game used to be great when this app was paid only, and the only thing wrong with was that it was 32-bit thus woouldn't function with iOS 11. The current version may be iOS 11 compatable but with it came features that nobody who owned this previously would ever ave asked for - advertistments, non-transparent controls, and not being able to save the game. This version has only persuaded me to delete it, downgrade to the last paid-only version of Phantasy Star 2 to play once last time and then delete as a casulty of iOS 11 not supporting 32-bit apps because never playing Phantasy Star 2 ever again is still an improvement over what they're giving us now..Version: 3.1.2

Freezes when trying to saveAs a long time fan of the series I was excited to play the game. It worked great the first couple uses but the last several times I’ve attempted to save progress, the app freezes on the advertisement. This makes me lose the progress; I haven’t been able to successfully navigate around this issue for the last several days and has prevented gameplay. Happy to rate higher once a fix is in place..Version: 3.2.2

Feels very datedWatched an ad to start the game, then watched the opening video, went to save, and had to watch an ad. It froze, so I closed out and opened it back up. Then I was asked for a review before I even started playing again so here is my 1 star review so far. Edit: Man does this game feel dated (and I was playing phantasy Star 4). I get they’re trying to keep true to the original, but it does not hold up well. I imagine it might be fun if you have nostalgia for the game, but I never played it before. The movement controls are awful. Definitely could use a UI revamp also to bring it into the modern age like Final Fantasy has done with their old games.Version: 4.0.1

Stuttering gameplay and soundAre the emulation issues ever going to be fixed? As of version 3.1.2 there is still stuttering Is there anyway to sign up as a beta tester? It seems this development team needs one.Version: 3.1.2

Currently broken....Unfortunately the current version does not seem to work. Gets stuck in a loop where trying to start a new game just brings you back to the original start screen..Version: 2.0.0

Lost my save file!!!I was happily playing this awesome game from my childhood for the past few nights before bed..... Well today there was a mandatory update that when installed removes the in game save system! I was hurt to discover my few hours of grinding had been torn away from me and was deleted forever :( I guess the up side is that it was only a few hours and not hundreds that were lost, way to be a total rip off!!!!!!! I will never re-download this piece of crap or any other game from this shiesty developer.Version: 3.1.0

Wait for an app updateSaves are sketchy at best. They often disappear and you need to start over..Version: 3.0.2

Can't get passed title screenI cannot get passed the title screen. I pressed start a b and c and it does not progress. Do they even test this game ? Hired a bunch of cheap labour beginner coders. Very disappointed.Version: 3.2.2

Next game...Pls pls bring Dark Wizard to iOS.Version: 3.1.2

Save-stating crashes the game (no in-app purchases)It's great to play Phantasy Star IV again. I know how the story is and how the game is supposed to be played out. However, every time I try to save state, the game crashes. And this is frustrating considering I reached Reipard LaShiec on my second try at the Air Castle. You got that right. SECOND try. The first time around, I didn't get to the three Xe-A-Thouls who stole the Eclipse Torch, and I wanted to save state the game. But it crashed. Now I started all over again, and the second time I was lucky enough to make it to LaShiec. But he overtook me and now I have to go through the Air Castle all over again just because I was ambitious enough to do it all in one go. TL;DR: Emulation needs to have a working save state feature to save the tedious trial and error players go through just because they can't console save the game in a dungeon. If you can find a way to fix this issue, then I'll be very grateful..Version: 4.1.0

When these came outYr games weren’t invaded by ads and u could play and save offline. The controls on this one r awful can’t even enter yr four digit name.Version: 3.2.1

Deceptive purchase offer, use free versionI paid to have the ads removed, and iirc the in-game save feature (presumably using the Data Memory places) was also supposed to be enabled. However I still get a pop-up as EVERY time I open the game, and the in-game save feature doesn’t work. You have to save with the cloud. So what did I pay for? Everything advertised turned out to be false. The app is a good port minus some audio issues, but I can’t recommend paying for it at the time of writing this review. Hopefully the developer will fix these issues with an update..Version: 3.1.2

Phantasy Star ClassicsI downloaded the game and paid five dollars to have ads removed. I should’ve tried to save my progress before paying for the ads. I’m not able to save progress. Even going into the game Center to try and save does not work. I sent a support ticket and they got back with me and said, “we are aware of the problem and are working to fix it. Please keep an eye out for updates to this problem“. Then they also told me, “we will consider this matter rectified. We will reach out back to you if we have any other questions“. What does that even mean.? And now reading previous reviews this is a major problem with this game. This is a problem that goes back for 4 even 5 years. I cannot recommendDownloading this game. It’s been a wasted time and a waste of money..Version: 4.1.3

Can’t Save GameUnless you plan on playing this game from start to finish when you open it, don’t waste your time. I actually paid for the ad free, which makes it is even worse that I cannot save the game. They have a support button that allows you to put in a support ticket, however I have never received a response. The game works but you can not save your game, which means it starts from the beginning each time. I don’t recommend wasting your time or your money on this. It’s too bad because this used to be a favorite game of mine!.Version: 4.1.3

Already Purchased, Update is Showing AdsI've already purchased this game before the relaunch, and it is now showing ads, and I cannot restore my purchase. I think it's great Sega wants to introduce people to the classics, and think that if they need ad revenue that they are welcome to it, but don't push an update that forces legal owners of your apps to look at ads until they purchase it again..Version: 2.0.0

Still Works KindofSince SEGA is phasing out Sega Forever, last I tried logging in, the save feature would not log in. If you haven’t finished these games before they fall out of support entirely, buy the game, and use the game’s in-game save feature locally. It still works glitch-free. As an emulation, it is nearly flawless on modern phones. I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max. SNES cornered the market on JRPGs in the 90s, but SEGA was always out to prove they are the little company that could compete. I won’t play the SNES Final Fantasy games because of the almost non existent battle animation. These are beautiful games (unfortunately except for PS3), that make me happy to take a journey into 4th generation gaming. I recommend starting with the 4th game, as it is straightforward, accessible, and the best designed. If you had fun, try Phantasy Star 2, where the story for 4 starts. It is less refined, and has ridiculously complex mazes you will need a map for, but it was very ambitious for its time and has a cool sci fi look. The 3rd entry was made by a side developer and has little to do with the main story. Check it out as a curiosity with generational characters, but it can be skipped without missing much. The story is relatable with modern tech at first, but also goes into how overdependance on tech can weaken a people..Version: 4.1.3

Saving crashes the app :(I LOVED Phantasy Star II on Genesis, and am so excited to be able to play it again, but every single time I save the state, the app crashes. So the process is to save the game in the game, save the game through the interface, watch an ad, app crashes, load the app, choose to restore the game, watch another ad, load my save in the game, then I can continue playing. It’s very annoying, but I’m afraid that if I don’t do all that, I’ll lose my progress. Please, please, please fix the save game crash. I would gladly pay the $5 for the full ad-free experience, but I can’t bring myself to pay for something that is just going to crash on me all the time, and I would very much like to play through all three games..Version: 4.1.0

Ugh, the ads, ugh the adsThe game itself, at least the fourth installment is fun and works as it should so far. The problem comes when the ads enter the picture. I’m all for company’s making money but WTH Sega. Every time you save a game you have to watch a video that is 15-30 seconds. This may not sound like much but it kills the momentum of the game. To make matters worse the ads won’t play until I put the game in the background then resume. This makes the ads even more tedious and make me not want to play one of my favorite games of all time, sigh. Shaking my head in severe disappointment..Version: 4.0.1

Old FavoritesI loved these games back in the day and was glad to scratch on old nostalgia bug when I found these. The games are great as ever. I gave one star though as the cloud save is completely buggy and frequently fails. It requires constant connection to sign into the game center every time. While commuting it, frequently breaks connection and crashes causing all progress to be lost. So, I actually have to use the actual in game save feature. This is unacceptable for a mobile port. The cloud of save feature is simply lazy. The dragon quest ports have built in auto save to your phone. No messy cloud save needed. I’m glad to have these games but regret the port functionality..Version: 4.1.0

Much like all the sega titles....Much like the majority of sega iOS games, the controls are way to finicky, the buttons are too close together to really work properly. Sega has a long way to go to bring these titles to life in a useable way. Which is too bad, as these are beloved games from my childhood..Version: 3.1.0

Save data goneI made it all the way to the second dungeon and I lost everything because the game didn’t save. It was really fun to play but such a waste of time and money because I couldn’t save..Version: 3.1.2

Major control issues/bugs. PS IV is great at least!Don’t bother with PS II or III, unfortunately they’re riddled with bugs, control issues, and overall are just poor ports. PS IV seems to be working great tho! The only decent port of the 3 games, and the controls are functional enough. No bugs yet. Having a great time playing it. I got the original Phantasy Star II app a year ago and had the same control issues. Just really sloppy and potentially broken. I was never sure if it was me missing something, or it the controls were just straight up broken. Pretty sure the latter; like a lot of these Sega Forever ports unfortunately. I don’t know why they don’t put more effort into debugging these ports, or making them more smartphone friendly at least. Some of them are great (Shining Force, some Sonics), but most of them are pretty bad. A shame, cause the games are such classics. They could have a major cash cow here..Version: 4.0.1

A disservice to a great classicDisappointing. Terrible emulation that runs at maybe 30 fps on flagship iOS devices. Music and sound stutter and don't play at a consistent rate (you can hear the music speeding up and slowing down there is no constant tempo). Zero options for rendering options or virtual control size of transparency. This is literally a minimum viable product. Sonic was fantastic and done properly. I understand there's no way you'd have the time of resources to give all your classics the same treatment you gave sonic but if the rest of your classics are going to use this terrible performing emulator as their foundation then you are going to upset all of your biggest fans. Your target market. Please get a new emulation engine under these classics before you release too many more or the Sega forever platform will be ignored..Version: 3.0.2

Pay to remove ads and still get ads for other SEGA games!Huge Phantasy Star and SEGA Genesis fan, games seem fine but what is NOT fine is the ad system. The games are free but you are forced to watch ads to save your game. Even if you pay to remove these ads (like me) you still are prompted with an advertisement for SEGA’s other App Store games. Disgusting behavior in my opinion. I’d like to just enjoy my game. Honestly, you’re probably better off emulating and saving the money or time wasted on the ad-dilemma, but I’m lazy and having the three games in this app with the option to save anywhere is convenient..Version: 4.1.3

DisapointedBought this app a few years ago before it got removed from the app store. I was pretty satisfied with it. Now, with this new Sega Forever release, the app suffers serious performance issues such as bad framerate (running on iPhone 6S), stuttering audio and to add the insult to the injury, I'm greeted with an annoying ad whenever I start the game even after I restored my purchase. Extermely disapointed..Version: 3.0.2

Used to be betterBefore moving this title under the Sega Forever banner it was better. Saving is a pain even if you have the paid version. Logging into Game Centre is finicky. Controls are too close together. Disappointing..Version: 3.1.2
