Surfline: Wave & Surf Reports for Negative User Reviews

Paying For Premium Is A Bad IdeaI have been a paying subscriber from back in the Coastwatch days. Unfortunately paying for an ad free subscription gets you not much at all for nearly 80 bucks a year you will still get the offline camera symbol far too regularly with mostly a dirty view that makes some viewing impossible when It does work. At $30 a year you could put up with it but there is nothing‘Premium’ about the subscription other than the price..Version: 7.5.3

Loved it until recent updateI had no problem with watching a 30 second ad before live streaming from any location; that is the “price” to be paid for not purchasing premium. I’ve gotten into the habit of frequently checking both local live cams and other interesting locations throughout the day. With the recent update, you can only open the app two or three times a day, but once you exceed that, there is no way to access information for any location beyond wave height and quality (poor, good, etc.). I’ve deleted the app, as I see no use in this extremely limited access, and no reason to buy premium because of the already-poor coverage for my location, and the fact that I do not travel enough to need unlimited access. First-world problem, I know, just sharing my feelings on account of this sudden change..Version: 6.8.0

Disappointing, too many adsI’m using the free version and just hate the amount of advertising you are subjected to. First you have to wait to see the break you’ve selected while an ad runs in the video window, then after about 10 maybe 15 seconds of your break, the whole app screen turns into an ad for some atrocious piece of garbage game app for the next 30 seconds. I only need to look at a couple of cams to work out conditions, often they aren’t clear (salt spray) or not even working so can’t see the point in subscribing it’s overpriced for what you get. In australia we have just been directed to using this after using Coastalwatch for many years, it too had adverts but nothing like this onslaught. Will probably delete the app if this is what I can expect when I use it..Version: 7.0.1

Magic seaweedThis app has taken over magic seaweed and now I can’t find the high tide this is just dumb I’m not paying for an app I can’t use… also why would anyone pay for an app to find out the flow charts like it’s not a smart move I’ve read some reviews and it makes sense to charge for camera footage and what not but as for just finding out the tide flow not dealing with adds or pay to play because I can literally run a search on a search engine and get my answers it’s a shame what your company did to magic seaweed as it was useful and necessary but this obviously has payed reviews to drown out the actual reviews of people using the app I immediately uninstalled when it required me to make an account just to look at things … personally waste of time to download and this is in hopes that other fishermen who used to use magic seaweed will be able to see it and realize to not download this app.Version: 9.8.2

Premium :/No doubt surfline is an absolute great surf app. it has everything and tells everything very clearly. A while ago they had it where if you didn’t have premium you could only check the waves three times a week. That’s ok i could deal with that. But now, after a recent update, they added premium cams, which means you must buy premium in order to look at them. Mind you these premium cams take up half the cams and all my favorite beaches. Still, no biggie though, right? I don’t really need cams. however you do need a forecast. Without premium you aren’t able to see what the tide will be doing, what the wind will be doing, or what the swell will be doing. the only thing you get is the size of the waves the next day. I don’t know, i guess it is a wonderful app, just now you kind of need to buy premium in order to get it. And i’m sure i’m not the only one who can afford that..Version: 8.3.0

Terrible updateI am sorry, have been using surfline for years but this last update is just terrible. It is the classic marketing tactic of “hey look, I am giving you something for free!” We all get excited, and then we realize they have taken something out that we really needed and now you have to pay for it. Let’s be serious, there are tons of surf apps out there for forecasts. And it’s not like surfline gets it right all the times either. But the one thing that at least differentiated surfline for me is that I could just open the app and watch the cam, see the conditions for myself and go. Now, I can only do that 3 times a week with a free account. Not only. If I forgot to read something on a screen and open the app once again 1 minute after my surf check, that counts as another check! Seriously???!!! Sure, I can see 15 days of forecast for free now but is that really helpful? Let’s be serious, it’s already a miracle if the day after is forecasted correctly, let alone 15 days. The only difference with the new update is that the main reason for using surfline (watching the cams) is now gone and you have to pay for it. Cheap sneaky way to get more people to pay. One star for me..Version: 7.2.2

Needs to Get the Basics RightI have subscribed to three different apps and Surfline has exciting features but as an everyday app to check the surf for the week ahead it has some serious flaws. Most importantly its often very wrong, even on the day of the forecast for my home breaks on the E Coast. Reading the app and looking out the window often make me wonder why I spent the money. I live at Palm Beach so it also makes me question why the nearby buoy listed there is often not the Gold Coast for example today it gives Gladstone buoy data and the report is ankle to knee high, well maybe for the Jolly Green Giant but for anyone else its a mushy waist to head high. The report is wrong and you would have to ask is that because the algorithm is using the wrong buoy info. I also find it a little frustrating that- the web page gives more detail but if you leave it you have to sign back in; even though I pay for premium you still get ads; know before you go is hard to find on the website and even when I am signed in I still get messages to go Premium. In contrast to the above I really like the news feed, the graphs of swell size and angles and the explore tab all of these are very nice. I haven’t tried test flight but think that’s also an exciting idea. But for a surfer who just wants to plan his next surf, its over valued for the often not accurate information it supplies (where I surf)..Version: 6.0.1

Please fix this bug!I have this bug happen where usually on the second load of a spot after watching an ad, the livestream will fail to load and just give a black screen and also freeze my iPhone 12 mini. The app will either quit by itself if left long enough or I’ll have to lock the phone and reopen it, to where the app has quit and I’m on the home screen. Big issue as I'm not ready to pay yet for a membership and need to watch the cam multiple times as 30 seconds is sometimes not long enough!.Version: 7.5.2

Need to report a bugLove the app but need to report a bug. The drop and drag functionality within the favorites section is wonky. As soon as a slate is selected, the page begins pulling to the bottom - making it impossible to organize my favorites. Apple 11 Pro 14.6.Version: 7.5.2

MattYour modeling should show graphics and numerical data..Version: 10.3.2

Thank youSurfline is great always bang on..Version: 10.3.3

Not for outside USAUsed to use it when it was MSA (Magicseeweed) and was awesome, now this new app has NO data / setup prompts for regions outside USA… Typed in Tofino in BC, Canada and it thought this was in Mozambique, deleted.Version: 10.3.3

Magic seaweedMagic seaweed was a great app back in the day. Ever since it became Surfline it’s gone significantly down hill. I would say 50% of the time it never loads up. And I’m on the iPhone 14 Pro Max. I truly hope they improve it. I’m never going to pay a subscription for something like this but I’m down with ads..Version: 10.5.2

DisappointedThe cams I want to see are not turned on until 7am! In summer this is useless to me when the sun rises at 5am. It’s says ‘please refresh’ but is like this EVERY day. The wind report is usually off by at least a few hours if not totally wrong. Sometimes the time stamp on the ‘report’ is from a time where the reporter must be walking home drunk because it would’ve been pitch dark! Written numerous times to Surfline who say “we value your feedback” and NEVER had a response. They had no issue auto renewing my subscription tho, which if I’d been onto it , I would’ve cancelled. Feel ripped off. What are you going to do about it Surfline?.Version: 8.3.1

FeedbackI’m a pensioner living at the back end of Kirra and believe it or not, I can’t afford to pay for a subscription. I can get the the basic idea of what the surf is like but not really enough info to base a decision on whether to go down or not. So though it’s nice to get a gauge on what’s happening it’s not enough and you guys don’t cater for those marginal survivors living off a CentreLink government pensions. I do appreciate the you provide though..Version: 9.1.1

CamsHi, there are some faults with the cams. I have Most of the sydney cams saved as favorites but I can be in curl curl for example and then have my favorites listed along the bottom of screen (iPhone app) and then when I click on Dee why the cams doesn’t actually change , but the name of the cam changes from curl curl to Dee why…weird. It does it with a few other ones awell. I would then need to go out of cams and go back into the new one I want..Version: 8.0.4

Constantly looses favouritesI don’t see why anyone would look to purchase a subscription. Since The msw takeover the Surfline app is an absolute nightmare to use. Favourites disappear, so have to re add and as soon as you get used to the interface, they update it and remove certain aspects and buttons which inevitably make it awkward to use… this should be a basic app that does what people want, it’s too bloated and very buggy.Version: 10.12.1

High price for weekend warriorsI can’t really afford a year subscription at $99, and $12/mo is also too high for me…that’s $3 per week for a weekend warrior to check surf, and potentially find out the local surf is no bueno - that’s a waste of $3. If it was $8/mo, I think more people would subscribe. I fortunately just paid for a one-time offer from Surfline for a year subscription for $50 (really it was $49, but that one dollar less…I felt that 😆). Surfline has much more to offer than magic seaweed, Dawn patrol, lazy, surfer, etc. I just realistically have so many things in my life to pay for, and I have to make human choices about where to cut costs. Surfline has been one of them, and I’ve just made things work through local WebCams and other surf apps. I was willing to accept the one time deal for this year, though I will likely not continue beyond..Version: 9.7.1

New version is design over functionReviewing the latest version, which prioritizes a pretty design over user needs. Surfline used to provide a way to check all the different spots, buoys, wind, and tides to get an idea of where I wanted to surf and when. With the latest update all the visuals have been turned into singular simplified icons of what’s going on right now, which is helpful if i want to surf now…but you can just look at the cam for “now” conditions. 90% of the utility was being able to synthesize the visuals of tide, swell, and wind over the next few hours and know what conditions it would lead to at your spots. That stuff is all fragmented around different parts of the app now and all that utility is gone for me. It’s painful and a lot of effort to get the information I used to get in a few seconds with a quick glance at my spots..Version: 8.0.2

Frustrating so farI just loaded the app to simply check out the video quality. I clicked twice on a livecam that was not functioning, The system reduced my 3 permissible visits to 1, so I have only one more chance to see any live video on the free (exploratory) version of the app this week!!.Version: 8.0.2

Overly complicated. Trim the fat.Way too much information, crowded in comparison to magic seaweed. Just show us a tidal chart and swell/period directions. Surflines “interpretation” of the conditions are completely wrong in my area. The forecasting of the wave height in metric is also too large of a measurement “.09” etc. is just frustrating. Way to kill a perfectly good thing in the name of “surfing as a business.” Worst merger ever.Version: 9.8.2

ReportMostly works well. I do seem to lose favorite spots on occasion. Not sure how or why. Some cameras don’t really give an accurate picture- but you probably really do need to learn a spot and it’s views anyway. The daily report is often in accurate for west coast Auckland. Or more accurately it describes what is there at the time- but it generally changes quite quickly- eg a smallish swell at dawn with low tide could be very different by mid tide. Not sure it’s a big problem- as I am aware, so maybe decreases the numbers at the beach 🤣.Version: 9.0.1

At least the cams are useful...I have a real love/hate relationship with this app. The app functions very well, is easy to navigate, and the surf cams are very useful if there’s one at your local spot. That’s where the good stuff ends. The forecasts are nearly useless. Half of the time they’re wildly off-base for the next day, let alone the week to come. I’ve wasted many sick days on the promise of head-high waves with “good” conditions, only to find myself pumping my legs off in knee-high slop. Even worse, the reports are mostly inaccurate. It’s almost like they’re not looking at the same spot. The cams are the sole reason that I use the app (and the sole reason for two stars instead of one), and I pay for premium because they’re nearly unusable without it. Surfline used to be a valuable tool, but it has become a major source of aggravation..Version: 5.11.1

Better days with CoastalwatchSince Surfline has taken coastalwatch, it’s become frustrating that with a monopoly on free surf cams they are leveraging it so hard with adds. I can’t look at the cam long enough to get a picture of the conditions, with out sitting through a 15 second add every 5 - 10 second. And sorting beaches by alphabetic is a little silly when your away from home and don’t know the area. Like CW, it’s best to sort by order from north to south..Version: 7.2.0

Replacement for MSWI only downloaded this app because it replaces the magic seaweed app, which was brilliant. This however, is not! Instead of being able to quickly check local surf and tide conditions, as I could before. I now have an app that is difficult and counterintuitive to use, that gives loads of unwanted and over complicated information. Do not recommend..Version: 9.9.0

Good if you like being toldThe whole app is focused on being told where to surf rather than interpreting data yourself. For me, MSW had the right idea allowing users to compare and review data along with computer modelling. It’s also a shame Surfline took some of the worst bits from MSW, such as the wave height forecasts, which aren’t accurate as people having been incorrectly (for me) entering wave heights which has likely messed the algorithms. So a 3ft prediction is actually 1.5ft. And left out the good MSW stuff:- Full Atlantic and other global charts Where are the jet stream charts? Isobar Pressure charts - without wind? Where are the rainfall charts? Cloud cover charts? As previously stated if you want to be told where to go and look at cams it’s an ok app. But be prepared to find the conditions different.Version: 10.1.4

A Great Surf ReportSurfline is an ok app and personally I wouldn't use a different one due to its superiority in cameras, but some of the reports say 1-2ft for the Perth area on a 4ft day. For the Margeret River Pro this year it said that the height was 2-3ft. This is just a major inconvenience i find that putting the settings on face height instead of traditional height is slightly more accurate. Apart from that the app is great with semi accurate winds and tides. The Regional Forecast and Premium Analysis are great aswell just with a little inconsistency the further the date is to the current one. The swell maps is impressive and easy to read aswell. An overall ok app Update a week later: The app now keeps on crashing my account I can't read any reports without it crashing. I've reset my password, phone and deleted the app over and again but nothing seems to work..Version: 7.5.2

Bring back Magic Seaweed!I started using this app when Magic Seaweed dissolved and I am so disappointed. It was so easy to see which days in the coming week were good/bad at a glance on MSW, but almost impossible on this. Half the time when I open the app, it doesn’t even load my favourites. Then to add insult to injury, every single cam on my favourites is premium only. On MSW, lots of these cams were free if you watched an ad each time. I have to search the cams elsewhere on the internet, where I can watch them for free..Version: 10.3.3

Awful app and poor predictionsI don’t ever remember MSW being this bad! Surfline is an embarrassing mess, it’s ruined my surfing experience to the point I can’t be bothered surfing any more. Predictions are always wrong, the app and website are horrible, poor social aspect that MSW had. Surfline, your service is horrible please please please bring MSW back, or sell it to somebody else who will look after it…you’ve ruined my and so many other people’s ability to predict surf and connect. It’s a horrible service!.Version: 10.6.0

Bring back MSWI am not a surfer but loved using MSW for years for all other boating activities and water sports. Moved over and have no idea how to find the weather charts that used to be so easy to find. I am on holiday in Croatia and no information at all that I can find, whereas before a Mediterranean Chart at least would have been very helpful. Nearest spot seems to be Italy. App assumes I am a surfer, I am not, so maybe no longer welcome? Will try a few more days and unless I can start seeing what everyone else is seeing will delete for good. Really not intuitive any more..Version: 10.2.0

No dark modePlease make a dark mode! It’s a great visual setup for people with certain disabilities!.Version: 10.1.4

Love the app but have one issueWhen looking at the app or more specifically a surf spot. The video lags every second making it very annoying to work around. Additionally, not only when looking at any surf spots but the lag is also occurring in the rewind. Nevertheless, I tried to managed through this issue hoping it was gonna be fixed because of a bug issue or something. However, it’s been almost a month now and I am still having this problem. I don’t if it was just me. So, to make a long story short. I was just hoping you guys now have at least have an idea of what’s going on via issues in the camera/app. Otherwise, I have been a subscriber for a long time and will continue to be one until the day I die. So in other words, I have nothing bad to say. Love the app and everything you guys do. Just have this one issue that happen just recently. ✌️.Version: 8.4.5

Need earlier surf reportsPaid for the subscription. Love having access to the cams and all the available info but the daily reports don’t get updated until after 7am which is pretty useless. If you’re going to pay premium prices you would expect a better service. It’s a shame, everything else is great..Version: 8.3.1

Cams ok, forecast often unreliableI have been using the app for a while before writing this review. Cams are ok (of course not everywhere and never in spots for "locals only"), they help. The wave forecast, quite the opposite, is often not reliable and is subject to change even overnight. It seems that they do not have enough data to work on, as the reliability of a forecast depends mainly on the amount of data collected on the ground..Version: 7.2.3

Really POOR!Awful. Subscription transfer from CW. CW much better. Where is the search function? Where is the cam list (when just want to check the surf and conditions (but not a favourite). Lacking in useful information. Poor features. Waste of money. Will not renew subscription unless it improves dramatically. Would have rated it a 0 if I could have. Help function is a joke. Unable to find surf report and/or cams for any beach that is not a favourite. Surf predictions for a beach that I may want to looks at going to but not is near my location???? Completely useless app. Don’t waste your time or money..Version: 6.9.1

Hot garbageOverly designed version of magic seaweed w/o the beautifully simplistic easy to use nature of msw. Greedy execs who bought a beautiful grassroots website and want to line their pockets with underserved subscription fees for what was previously free and of better quality. Loses saved breaks and gives a clean screen if u don't pay for worthless premium. Pathetic all around.Version: 10.1.3

Official App for kooksI’ve been a long time user of this app when I first started learning but never realized how much people hated on it. I can’t tell you how many times people have asked me what app I use to see the forecast and I tell them “Surfline,” while getting a disgusted looking face in return. Everyone I’ve talked to exclaims about how notorious this app is for having poor and inaccurate reports all the time (probably almost 20 people by now). I always relied on the surf cams for my spots I go to and had no issues watching a 15-30 second ad to see what the waves were doing that day. But now I have to pay $9.99 a month for features that used to be free? Seriously? I can’t even see a full report for the day and forecast for the oncoming days now anymore. You kooks can kiss it.Version: 6.8.4

More ads than surf plus crashes all the timeHi there, been really trying to give this app a go after you forced us to swap from Coastalwatch. Its fair enough if you focus on the paid version but that’s no excuse to offer a below poor experience to the users who choose to watch the ads that make you money! Honestly when the ads are longer than the block of surf cam view between something is off! Plus more often than not the app crashes after the 2nd ad so then you have to restart the whole thing and watch another ad to get back to it… Hoping you might consider adjusting the ad settings and fixing the bug too. Thanks.Version: 7.2.6

Not usable from the offJust downloaded the app today, switching over from MSW. None of the fields will allow me to type in them, the options I can select for my date of birth are all in the 1990s, I can’t progress through any of the setup pages, can only skip them. And I can’t type in or search for any spots. So basically this app is not usable for me..Version: 9.8.2

NavigationThe bavigation is not very intuitive.Version: 10.4.3

USED TO BE GREATI always loved this app before the most recent update. This app still has all the reports on it that’s necessary, but now it’s written for computer geeks and nerds. Why; because they made all the fonts small for all the computer geeks to read it. I’m an old guy and many of us old surfers have poor vision now and the app has everything written so small that I can barely make out the wind, waves, and swell heights. On top of that; they made the favorites list tiny fonts also for kids and computer nerds to read it. One good thing was they added in Live View the wind, waves, and tide forecasts. I get it, every few months or years they have to upgrade their look, but now the app dashboard looks like every other terribly small app..Version: 8.1.0

Tide graphI find it’s been hidden away. You need to bring it back to the splash page and make it visible better.Version: 10.9.0

Poor UXI’m trapped in a loop when creating a new account where it asks me to enter my MSW email. If I do it, nothing happens. If I ignore it, it opens a new window asking me to create a new account, after which it asks me to enter my MSW email..Version: 10.1.3

Breaking up with SurflineWe had a pretty good run, you and I, my old darling Surfline, you even helped me score an epic post typhoon swell in Philippines once ! :) Our relationship had been strong, clean, and long period in the past but fell flat in recent years. Sloppy and textured conditions started to come between us. And lack of stories about underground rippers or anything really original, made you feel frigid, distant, and commercialized. Instead you continued to run stories about the same old names and became more and more short board centric. Other rips that started to drift us apart was your devotion to an over abundance of cams dotting all the good coast lines. Instead of getting out there and surfing a swell, I often just stared at my phone screen indecisive, about where the best waves were, watching cams until the conditions blew out. Instead of drawing me nearer to good surf you actually kept me away. But the final draining of our love was that your handlers wanted to charge me just to see you a few times a week or catch a peek at a simple chart. I look forward to time spent in the water to soothe any lingering pangs I have about our fall out. I’d rather get worked than hang out with you anymore..Version: 6.3.1

Surf check update is a bustOnce the app updated to this new “surf check” model for free accounts, the app lost is worth for all the free users in Surfline. Before you had unlimited surf checks and could check any surf break you wanted multiple times a day. You could only see a 3 day forecast and couldn’t see premium cams but that was okay. Now you are only given 5 checks per week! But are given a 15 day forecast instead of 3, even though the forecast changes every day. You really need to check for the forecast on the given day you want to see the real forecast. This ruined my experience of the app. I can’t even check the see everyday of the week. I could only check one spot 5 days a week. Completely useless. All surfers know that you have to go “scout” the spots and find the best spot. This app used to be useful for that but now is irrelevant. This update was a huge marketing ploy to get free users to switch to premium by reducing the usefulness of the app to free users trying to coral them into buying the premium version so they could get back the functionality they had before as a free user. Money move by Surfline and not for the people. Give back the functionality for free users to check unlimited spots and remove the whole surf check feature. The app is useless with that feature. I will be using other surf forecasting apps so I can actually check the surf and no be limited to a weekly limit on my “surf checks”.Version: 7.2.6

.Frustrating experience for new users. Bought premium, fair enough price and all, but then it still advertises you to buy premium at every chance it gets. Then there’s no way to check whether you’ve actually got premium and god help me when I want to try and cancel the subscription. Cool ideas and still a helpful app all round but some serious flaws in the execution..Version: 7.5.3

ReviewI would like to see a more visually appealing Weekly graph on my home page for my fav locations. Like magicseaweed had. Thanks..Version: 9.9.1

Auto volume adsCome on. I get you need to show ads but automatically turning the volume on is annoying as hell.Version: 9.9.1

App works poorly on iPad, missing key forecast toolsOne of my biggest complaints about the app is that it doesn’t work well on an iPad at all. Doesn’t support landscape mode except for cam feeds. You can’t search for spots without adding them to favorites, which is annoying when I’m looking at places I don’t frequent but just want to check, unless you go to the map view. But when I’m looking at spots in California or Florida from New England, I don’t necessary want to scroll on a map. Probably the most salient missing feature is the nearshore model tool, though. Living in New England, where a lot of spots are missing from the site, nearshore is often the only way I can get a sense of what individual spots will be like, and I have to use a browser or computer for that. The interface is useful for quick checks, but for those of us who are often on the go and rarely at a computer, those key tools are sorely missed..Version: 5.1.7

Create account and log in failI was asked by MSW to move to this app but after downloading the app I can’t create an account or log in or see a route to ask for assistance. I’m sure the app is amazing but I keep going round in circles with log in process :S. I think I have linked facebook several times and created multiple accounts now and stuck in a circle unable to compete the log in :( Happy to be contacted by a team member to resolve the issue ;).Version: 9.8.3

Was good when I could log in!When I first downloaded the app about a month ago, I had to create an account, which I did. When I go to load it today it asks me to log in and it won't allow me, just a red strip appears at the top of my screen with no text. I go to reset my password and get the same red strip, no text or error message. So I go to create an account, you guessed it, that red strip appears at the top of my screen again. Unable to log in, unable to reset my password and unable to register for an account. I'll go back to using the websites in a browser that I was using before. It's a bit long winded but I don't want to sign up (again!) using a different email address, for something that could possibly happen again. Otherwise, was an ok app for checking the current surf and for the next 2 days..Version: 5.1.6

Ads on premium???Why do you show ads for surfline blog content for premium users. Please turn those ads off..Version: 9.4.0

Great potential, poor informationLove being able to have all the surf cams, but when it comes to size + knots description, it is almost always extremely wrong. This defeats the purpose of me paying monthly for an app that doesn’t even give me correct information. Recently my local spot said 7-8ft when the waves were actually 1ft. Please improve on this as I may need to stop paying for this app soon. And I am also paying money for cams that have been offline/broken for weeks. These should be fixed in 1-3 business days for all the paying customers. And one last thing. The replay option always makes the app shut down everytime I try and watch more than a minutes worth of footage. So so much to change Surfline. Not happy with the quality of this app at all..Version: 7.2.6

Developers are lyingI am reading through some of the recent developer responses to unhappy ratings and most of the time the developers say something like, “non-paying users still have unlimited access and the ability to view hundreds of free cams…” I have the app and from what I have seen this is a lie (maybe with a small amount of truth). Sure, you might have access to hundreds of free cams… hundreds of cams no surfer would use. I doubt any well known surf spot is free to view. As for the “unlimited access” that may be a flat out lie. I do not know what they mean by that because the app is extremely limited; only showing data from the day of viewing. Super disappointed. I suggest surfers download the app “Magicseaweed”. Unfortunately it too requires payment for webcams, however the app does provide a complete 6 day forecast (which is what I personally need in a surf app)..Version: 8.3.0

Surfline takes over more control…Even when you’re paying the minimum subscription you only get a 16 day forecast and SOME wave cameras with ads playing every 30 seconds! App tracking and personalised ads are still all around the app even while paying but they still make money off your data if you don’t pay. Absolute sell outs sipping their lattes in their offices, figuring out how to make more money off the average Jerry. A disgrace to the good hearted surfing community. At least we don’t have to pay a fee just to get into the ocean yet….Version: 10.0.0

Moved from MSW, tides difficult to view.I was a great fan of MSW, but this app is not quite doing it for me. I like to check the tides, and this requires many clicks to get there (unless I am just using the app wrongly of course), and then the tide information display is not as clear as MSW. Also quite a few beaches have disappeared from this app. Not the end of the world here, but would be nice to have a bit more choice..Version: 9.9.1

Absolute downgrade from MSWThis UI is extraordinarily less user friendly than MSW was. Aesthetics have clearly been prioritised over functionality - the minimalist presentation means that to evaluate and compare the changes in conditions during the day (and therefore the best time to surf) you have to try and hold all the the different variables in your memory as you scroll through them! With MSW it was all laid out in a simple grid for your eye to move back and forth over. Furthermore on an I phone to scroll through the day’s data requires a very similar action to the one that shifts between days meaning you often accidentally slide off the day you’re trying to read. Terrible waste of money by Surfline to bin the MSW formula and commission this..Version: 10.2.0

Not meant for the every day surferSurfline does it’s best to annoy you in to buying their $100 a year premium service. Most average surfers don’t travel around the world and surf 100’s of different surf breaks. Usually wherever you live are the spots you frequent and there’s no need to have the cams from anywhere else really. Why spend $100 for all that??? I wouldn’t even be upset if there was some kind of package that let you pay just for the breaks you want but money hungry Surfline can’t do that. The newest update only lets you check the surf report 4 times in a week, even if the break doesn’t have a cam and even if you had already checked the break 5 minutes before (maybe you had a text that switched the app). Pretty lame seeing how they use normal publicly available data to compile their surf reports. This app is garbage. I hope more people follow suit and give this app negative reviews. Go download MagicSeaweed. That’s actually worth the time spent using it and you get all the same information..Version: 6.7.2

Maybe okI’ve changed my initial review from one to three stars. I’m getting used to Surfline after being a fan of MSW. If this issue could be resolved I’d give five stars: on MSW the wind was colour coded. I found that feature accurate and useful for swimming, paddleboarding as well as surfing. It’s now been subsumed with the ‘Poor, Fair’ etc classification. But that generates odd results. Yesterday at Gwithian MSW had wind = green (so positive) whereas Surfline had ‘Poor’ (so negative). Different presentation of same data would potentially lead to a person making opposing decisions based on same conditions!! If I have local knowledge I can “feed in” my own colour coding for wind direction but I can’t always do this..Version: 9.7.1

UI and many cameras need work…IPAD: Many of the cameras, have a problem with, pixelation, or contrast, like when a big wave breaks, it stops, then turns quite pixelated, then cleaned up. White, or foam, as the waves break (high contrast) seems to have an effect on the serial data, but then you miss best part of waves. second problem is watching in landscape, you keep having to turn to portrait to select the 20min range of time of day, then back to landscape…..i do know a sneaky way to look at entire day, but hard to make it work…why don’t you guys cache the cameras better, or something. Also after 4 or 5 days you can’t see the place that may having been breaking huge, because of of disk space or server BW, or whatever, we premium members can no longer see it…why can’t you make the data available for a month…, i bet you still have it!!! .etc…sorry you asked….Version: 10.1.3

New interface is trash[Update] Your upgrades keep making your app worse! Stop trying to sell us stuff from your shop at the expense of seeing the swell forecast — the actual reason we all use your app. You now need to click to favorites to see all your beaches and then click through your dumbed down graphs for the swell and wind information, then another for the forecast. Grr. I really don’t like that you took away your swell graph. It’s super annoying to click through each hour to see the predicted swells. Your wave size forecast is very inaccurate for some of the beaches I frequent, so looking at the wave size graph isn’t helpful. Instead, I would look at the swell graphs to easily check swell size and direction. It’s way more annoying to do that with your new interface. I also don’t like that you put the swell and wind information etc. on a different page. It was much better when you just scrolled down to see the information once you clicked on the beach..Version: 9.0.1

False AdvertisingI’ve used Surfline for the past couple years on and off, good app to check in. As a casual surfer I have never really had the need to pay for premium full time. Was planning on going this weekend and wanted to give the premium a trial as it’s about time to start surfing again. So I gave their “7 day FREE trial” a go. Not only does it charge you immediately, it also only gives you the month of which you pay for (not a month and 7 days). This is clearly false advertising that they hope you don’t notice. It may have been worth upgrading, but that isn’t the issue. It’s a clear effort to make you “accidentally” upgrade to premium. I definitely wasn’t ready to pay for that and I put a “service ticket” to hopefully get my money back, but I doubt that will ever happen if they are as clearly already doing some shady stuff with trying to make money off their users..Version: 9.1.2

Surf Checks=thumbs downFirst of all this app is amazing, i love everything about it besides a couple of the new features. I love how the app gives me tides, wave height, forcast, water temp it has everything. The free account treated me well until they added a feature only allowing you to view info 3 times and then you have to wait 2 days for another 3 surf checks. I use this app everyday considering it is the summer time and also the fact that i am a lifeguard at my beach. so the surf check feature, kinda ruins the app for me. if they were to maybe make it so some info is block and can only be seen when you purchase the subscription, it would make the app so much better, instead of the surf check feature..Version: 7.2.5
