The Atlantic Magazine for Negative User Reviews

Nothing but troubleCannot buy the magazine as "purchases cannot be validated". This is too hard. Goodbye..Version: 3.11

No access offline with last updateWith the update a few weeks ago, this app no longer supports offline saved articles. I reported it via the app website and received the reply “A new update for the app has temporarily suspended the option to view saved articles offline. This is temporary and will be returning with a future app update.” I travel frequently and do much of my reading in locations without internet access. “A future app update” is awfully vague. If this functionality isn’t returned soon, I’ll need to subscribe elsewhere..Version: 7.0.1

Great content if you can put up with a poor app. There is nothing wrong with the content. The Atlantic is insightful, interesting and very up to date. However the app itself is somewhat clumsy and sluggish in its design. I suspect less than adequate coding may be to blame..Version: 3.6.0

Great magazine, poorly designed appI love The Atlantic. I've been a loyal reader for nearly 15 years. This app does not do the magazine justice. It is well laid out but there are too many bugs and inconsistencies to make it enjoyable to use. It doesn't always download the content you think it has. It often crashes or will just hang forever. Opening the app tries my patience nearly every time. It simply isn't good enough..Version: 3.0

Too buggyVery disappointing from The Atlantic magazine. Great magazine, terrible app. Crashes constantly. Can't read any of my saved editions. Please fix quickly..Version: 2.0

How is it possible there isn’t a search function?I subscribe to both print and digital because I absolutely love the work the Atlantic produces, and downloaded the app so that I could continue or finish stories on the go that I started in the magazine or learned about from social media, but there is no search function and it’s basically impossible to find stories, especially if they are a bit older or don’t obviously fit into one category. How is it possible there is no search?? Please please please add a basic search function!.Version: 6.1.2

Great content, poor app designGreat content but the app is poor and I have no doubt it is costing the publication. The main issue is that the app doesn’t have a front page that gives you a sense of what is going on in the world. I subsequently visit the app quite rarely; in fact, I forget about it for weeks on end, even though I like the content when I visit. I have spoken to a number of friends who say the exact same thing - they like the Atlantic but rarely visit the app. Needs to be fixed..Version: 6.1.1

Substantial step backThe extended abstracts take up unnecessary space, yet I have no real contention with the desires of the editorial staff for greater control over the immediate content. But removing any sort of search function? If I see a story in a social media feed, or have one recommended in person by a friend (people still talk, editors) it’s effectively impossible to find that story in the app. I am supposed to guess at the section, then scroll and scroll and scroll until I find it? What if I’d like to read a last article? Bookmarks shouldn’t be the only option. This needed field testing before the full release. I understand the challenge of Peter and Oliver’s call to “rethink everything about the way we present ourselves” but this was a poor showing. Rethink it again..Version: 6.0.1

Lightweight, easy to read - but no search functionality?Oftentimes I’ll start reading an article on a different device using a web browser, then will want to search for it to finish reading it in the app. Or, I’ll want to search for an old article I remember enjoying from the past. Unfortunately with this app there’s no obvious search bar to find specific articles..Version: 6.1.1

In need of upgradeThe App gives an interesting feed every morning, the writing is easily legible. This is not a critique of the content of the magazine but rather of the app itself. For future upgrades it would useful to have a search feature to find interesting articles, also many links to the articles appear on social media platforms and they send me to the website with no option to open the article in the app. In these cases, it’s really difficult to find the same articles on the App to read them without ads and easily scroll and read. Also, hopefully there is a tablet app in the making 🤞. There are no other bugs and the app never crashes, it’s just a matter of user friendliness..Version: 6.0.2

No search functionNot really useful since there no search function when I want to find articles on a certain subject. . I’ll delete it and just use the website.Version: 6.1.2

No sync, or searchL get that search is too hard. I don't get that you can't allow our saved articles via 2 iPhones. You do have a grey-black background, so are darker & smoother than the NYT app. Yr last update was 10 months ago, & my sub expires in 10 months, so it's up to you. And, my bank account, but I'm trying more than you. lol.Version: 6.1.2

PoorFrustratingly slow, prone to crash.Version: 3.6.0

Does not support passwords with special charactersI created a password online and couldn’t log into this app. A very helpful support person pointed out that the app does not like passwords with special characters..Version: 6.0.2

New app is awfulThe old app was so intuitive and and you could easily look at the different articles and decide what you wanted to read, now you have to scroll so much. Obviously the content is amazing, but new design is disaster, being back the old app!!!.Version: 6.0

Horrible articlesThe articles are just plainly terrible, they definitely need new writers or something.Version: 6.1.2

No Search Functionality?Amazing stories it’s my go to news/editorial source but does the app really not have any search functionality??? Maybe I’m missing something but I couldn’t find it anywhere.Version: 6.1

Minor complaintText of articles is too close to the left side of my iPad screen, almost off the edge, making it a bit hard to read. Also, Cannot find a way to increase text size..Version: 7.2.6

Magazine awesome, app not so muchThe good: excellent content, stable experience, ability to save pieces of interest. The bad: no search feature?!?! All you can do is scroll through the preselected areas. Saw an “Atlantic” headline elsewhere and want to find and read it on your app? Too bad, unless you want to browse through everything until you find it. If you find it. Perhaps the intent here was the create an experience more like thinning through the pages of the most recent issue, but for anything beyond that, just take yourself to the website!.Version: 6.0.4

Great content, APPALLING appWorld's best writing packaged up in the worst possible app. S O S L O W. terrible nav, content takes forever to load... it's like your being punished for wanting to use the app. Take the hint and use their website instead..Version: 3.0

Current update very buggyI'm only writing this review because I can't read the Atlantic. With the new update I can read one screen's worth while my device labours to download whatever the banner across the bottom is, then everything locks up. Very frustrating..Version: 4.0.1

Okay app - but could be greatI am a long time subscriber to The Atlantic. I still get the print magazine but honestly do most of my Atlantic reading electronically. I was really excited when I first got the app, but have only been frustrated since. First, it is the most unintuitive app I think I have used in a long time. Having to dig 3 to 4 steps down to even find the magazine edition. It shouldn’t be an expedition to find the most recent magazine. I understand having the feed to read popular articles, but the joy of The Atlantic is “paging” through the magazine to read different articles that I wouldn’t typically click on in a news feed. Second, SEARCH. How can there not be a search function??? Search is one of the most useful reasons to read newspapers and magazines in electronic format. Please, please, please add search function. Third, Font Size. I can’t be alone in the demographics of The Atlantic subscribers in needing glasses or larger fonts to read comfortably. This is probably the second biggest reason to read content electronically instead of the print version. Please add the ability to adjust the size of the font. I still enjoy The Atlantic and think it is one of the best sources for in depth analysis of current events and culture. However, until these issues are addressed I will probably continue to link to The Atlantic on the internet instead of through the app..Version: 6.1.2

Locked out of paid up iPad subscriptionThe Atlantic needs to get a grip on their iPad / iTunes offering... It doesn't recognise me as an annual digital subscriber, crashes and just doesn't give me any way to correct the problem. I would like to be reimbursed since this App is a total waste of space and time. Don't touch with a barge pole!.Version: 3.5

Still crashesFor about a year now, this app has crashed a few seconds after opening. Uninstall/delete/close, nothing helps..Version: 3.8.0

Has never worked properly crashes too frequentlyThe content is the best out there but the app is a disaster, in particular if you are going to save any article it will crash every single time.Version: 3.7.0

Useless app from an amazing publisher. This is perhaps one of the worst media apps I have ever used. There is no search feature. There is no way to move something from Safari to the app (like I can with NYT). There is no easy way to open an article linked on Facebook. The only reason I am giving it three stars instead of one is the app is quite beautiful and easy on the eyes. I also love the integration of Audm audio for some of the articles; it’s an amazing feature. But the rest of usability is just simply not there..Version: 6.1.2

Great journalism, awful appI love the Atlantic and its journalism. But the app is awful, lots of focus on form over content (the very opposite of what the Atlantic is about), leaving you to scroll down multiple screens of white space and oversize graphics before getting to the articles. Please focus on making the app live up to the quality of the Atlantic, on quickly accessible content and good overviews of what’s available. I find myself using the website more and more given the poor app design, presumably the very opposite of what the app aims to achieve.Version: 6.1.1

Worst search engineA pretty app with quite possibly the internet's worst search engine. I was thrilled when I saw the app added a long overdue search function. But it's atrocious. Last night I tried to find the recent story on the Michigan lottery scam. Searching for "lottery" got me nowhere. I then found the article on Google, learning the title, but searches back in the Atlantic app for "30 million" and even "30 million lottery scam" did not turn up the article, even though those were exact match words for an article published 2 weeks ago. Just an all time fail. Please just put a Google search bar in the app somehow..Version: 7.1.0

Old app was great, this is awfulThe app was excellent, but this new one is truly awful. Please revert back to the previous version- - it wasn’t broken and there was no need to fix it. I now find myself going to the Atlantic website instead, which is a much more pleasant experience than using this..Version: 6.0

Crashes Upon OpeningThis app crashes shortly after opening. Super frustrating. Uninstall/delete/reinstall -nothing has worked. And it is also super frustrating that Offline Reading functionality isn't in place yet. Seriously needs a new version - ASAP. *love The Atlantic though..Version: 3.8.0

Needs A RedesignI hope you are redesigning the app to work and look like your mobile site because at the moment it is putting me off subscribing. While everything works the design and UX really doesn't encourage me to stay and explore the content. The latest Economist app should be your benchmark please!.Version: 3.11

Very frustratingThe content is excellent but the app is appalling - it constantly become unresponsive on my iPad Pro running iOS 9. Very flaky software..Version: 4.0.1

TrappedI was a subscriber for two years. It is near impossible to get out of a subscription to this magazine. Do Not commit to this rag..Version: 6.1.2

Keep crashingLooking for a refund..Version: 4.0

Where is the search function?High quality journalism but an app that leaves much to be desired. Most importantly where is the search function? I had to go to Google to find Caitlin Flanagan’s last piece. Why can’t I find it in the app? There is a comment from 10 months ago from a developer saying they are working on it. Please add that function..Version: 6.1.1

App forgets reading positionLike the vast majority of people (I would imagine) I flick in and out of apps. One really frustrating thing about this app is that it does not remember where I was up to or what I was reading. If I reopen the app an hour or two, it will just go back to its homepage. The New Yorker app is much better at this - I can reopen the app days later and it will go right back to where I left off..Version: 4.0.1

Love the MagazineBut the app crashes way too often. Paper version of magazine works better, sadly..Version: 3.10

UnreliableThe digital mag looks great - when you can see it. The app is inherently unstable in downloading issues, and you keep having to reinstall it. Shame..Version: 3.8.0

Getting worse & worseSeems now every issue has major bugs - I've downloaded but can't read the latest issue - app keeps crashing. Please sort it out..Version: 3.6.0

Gone again.App closes when you try to read the latest issue. This is poor - most magazines have had teething troubles, but most have sorted them out by now. This simply isn't a stable platform. Pity, because the content is fine if/when you can get to it. I won't be renewing my sub and will look for a refund if the problem isn't sorted out soon..Version: 3.5.2

Latest upgrade is awfulLost access to magazines since last upgrade. Restore doesn't work. Nor does reinstalling app..Version: 4.0

Great content, app needs a refreshThe content from the Atlantic is great, once you subscribe you can download back issues, which is fantastic. The problem is the app. When compared to other magazines, such as National Geographic, The New Yorker, or even the Qantas magazine the app leaves so much to be desired. The magazines are scanned pages of the print edition, with a 'reading' view which looses most the character. Similar to how kindle magazines work. Not great on the iPad. Wile it does support rotation, its not well implemented. Also uses low res icons and graphics, which could be updated for the iPad 3. So overall good content, but the app needs a major update..Version: 2.2

HATE this app (but I love the Atlantic)I am frustrated to the point of blindness with the way your app responds when the user accidentally touches one of the ads with the giant hit box. It takes me away from the article I’m reading to look **again** at another Audi ad (which holds a bitter irony for me as I will never in my lifetime be able to afford an Audi). Adding insult to class-warfare injury, I return to the article I was reading only to learn that I have to scroll through 2/3s of it to get back to where I was because the article goes back to the beginning. I love the Atlantic. I ***hate*** this app. Other news sites have the same accidental ad touching thing but I can always return to where I was in the thing I was reading. I know this can be programmed in. I am tempted to tell Audi that even if I got a massive windfall I would never buy an Audi because the way this app works angers me so much and it’s always an Audi ad. So I blame them. Actually I blame you, but I blame them as well. Please for the love of the gods fix this..Version: 7.2.6

My kingdom for a search function![Reviewing the app, not the magazine. The mag gets 5/5] Where is the search function?? When I hear about an interesting article, I want to go the app and read it, not get lost trying to find it. I recently heard about Annie Lowrey’s article “Time Tax” and it really piqued my interest. But I can’t find it on the app. This is *deliciously ironic* because the gist of her article is that the federal government burdens Americans with pointless, time-wasting work when the government could easily solve the issues. I wasted too much time looking for her article when all I needed was a search function. What the heck?.Version: 6.1.2

Looks amazing but where is the search function???I don’t know if I’m blind but I cannot find a search article function for the life of me in this app. Please add one or make it easier to access!.Version: 6.0.3

Search functionnality missingVery nice content and quality, really love it. Biiiggg missing point for me: where is the search bar? Couple of times I wanted to search for an article but it wasnt possible. Please add the search, would be much better! Thx.Version: 7.0.1

Needs search functionI generally like the app and find it usable. But sometimes I want to search for articles, even just to save old articles in the app. But there doesn’t appear to be a search function, which is incredibly frustrating. I can search on the site, so why not on the app as well?.Version: 6.1.2

Clunky app, great contentC'mon Atlantic, lift your game..Version: 3.0

Need a search function!I am new to the Atlantic app but I immediately noticed there was no search function. This is frustrating if I see an article posted on FB for example and want to read later on the app. With no search function, I can’t find the article! Also, I noticed even when I am signed into my account on the browser it won’t let me save articles on my computer to later read in the app. I wish the design was more seamless between computer reading and app reading! But first and foremost please add a search function!.Version: 6.0.3

Interesting articles, shame about the appThis app is downright painful to use - I'm constantly having to zoom and pan. Plus there are way too many ads. Dear Atlantic Staff: please see The Economist app for how a magazine app should work..Version: 1.3

Why is it so hard to use this app?I love the Atlantic. If I tell you I‘ve been reading it since James Fallows was a rookie, a few of you may know how long that’s been. A long time. The Atlantic has successfully negotiated the transition to the internet when so many of its peers have stumbled. The magazine still offers top notch long form journalism and the past few years it has tried to resurrect its role as a venue for high quality fiction and poetry, too. The web site is a treasure trove of innovative commentary and news that complements “newspaper” sites. The politics, economics, and science reports are invaluable for me. The problem is the app. I recently tried to renew my subscription through it, but the app would have none of that. I had to cancel and resubscribe, I discovered after a long and particularly unenlightening exchange with customer service. These days the app just forgets my subscription information every few days and I have to go through a rigamarole to get it to allow me to see anything. Customer service says to delete the app and reinstall it. They point out that a will lose my list of saved articles when I do that. I’d say, “no problem, I only have a few articles on my saved list,” but how do I re-save them after I reinstall? There is no search feature to allow me to find them. My advice: read the Atlantic, but do it from the website!.Version: 7.1.1

App needs improvementI love the Atlantic but the app is frustrating. I had a notification for a story that I thought interesting, so I clicked on it and read about halfway through, then was interrupted. When I reopened the app, I was on the homepage, not the article I was halfway through. I searched for a search button - nope. I looked on the homepage, but that offers only 5 Reader Favorites. I looked in Sections, but didn’t know what section my article was in. I went to my browser and eventually was able to find it (it’s in How to Build a Life, which I couldn’t find in the app). I read several other magazines and newspapers through apps - The Atlantic should check out The New Yorker’s and The New York Times for improving functionality..Version: 6.1.2

Update needs to goIf it’s not broke, don’t fix it I enjoyed being able to quickly scroll (a few seconds) to see what was new, and what I wanted to read. Each story seems to be published on a rather large canvas, so to speak, thus the need to keep scrolling. I miss the quick scan to capture several stories at once; No longer the quick read I would usually choose. Much preferred previous version - please go back.Version: 6.0

Good magazine, poor appThe Atlantic is a good magazine. The Atlantic app is a bad app. It does not save the readers place through exits or task-switching, it has a jerky interface and it has no access to the free online content. For a magazine that is aiming to survive in the digital age, the Atlantic's app has many obvious problems. The biggest advantage is that the app and the magazines are cheap, so you won't spend to much before you find the problems. There is no easy access to the online content, and I have no idea how they could have forgotten to include it. The app does not handle exits and multitasking well. Instead it puts you back on the starting screen, and sits unusable while it checks for updates. All the other readers and magazines and papers that I own manage to handle task switches. The interface is broken as well. There is no clear, easily accessed index for the magazine. Instead they have thumbnails of the pages, which is only useful for finding something which you have been to before, so I guess it's good for when you need to go back to the article you were previously reading again, because you switched apps, and are now at the start of the magazine. Poor effort, one star..Version: 1.0

ClunkyGreat journalism but unsophisticated app technology that relies too much on being ‘just like the magazine’..Version: 7.2.6

Still no search functionWhen I first downloaded the Atlantic app, about a year ago, I genuinely thought there had been some mistake - there must be a search function, somewhere, but some bug had made it temporarily inaccessible. So I wrote to customer service and received the following response: Thank you for contacting The Atlantic, We know this is a critically important feature, and we’re working on it. We don’t have a timeline yet for when it will be ready, but we are eager to get it to customers. This feature is currently only available on the website. This, it turns out, was a direct and deliberate lie. The app developers have no intention of providing a search function. I have to assume this is because The Atlantic doesn’t WANT people subscribing to the publication via Apple’s app store; they want people to subscribe via their website where they can have better control of our money and private information. The good news is that, at my request, Apple kindly refunded the money I had paid for this surprisingly useless app..Version: 6.1.2

Loading new issue is problematicI like reading The Atlantic, even though I live in Australia. But I hate the app. I have difficulty updating every single month. I shan't be updating my subscription..Version: 4.0

Poor app experienceWhile signed into the app on iPhone, it will sometimes open articles in a new window that has banner ads for installing the app, and also asks you to sign in to continue reading… while you’re a paying customer using their app..Version: 7.2.6

No Customer Support for Paid SubscribersI have about 5 paid media subscriptions and the Atlantic is one of them. However, my enjoyment of the app has seriously dwindled. I can not sometimes get the articles to load and can not figure out why. I went through customer support link… and nothing. No response. I deleted app and reloaded it. Nope. It’s really sad that we as the few people willing to pay for digital news media these days are not dignified with a response to our issues regarding our paid subscription access. Sorry, I expected better..Version: 6.2.2

No search function?Absolutely bizarre decision not to have a search function..Version: 6.1.2

Pay-UpNow demands payment for all articles. No thanks. You can read for free at Atlantic online..Version: 5.0

Navigation.Am I the only user to have great difficulty navigating this app without inadvertently clicking links I don't want and never being able to explore the full list of links?.Version: 2.1

The Atlantic AppStill useless as ever. When I log in, as an existing subscriber, I still regularly find only option is to buy latest issue...why can't you get yourselves organised like other online publications which never seem to have this problem...New edition is available .... Download... Read. How hard can it be?.Version: 3.9.0

Doesn't workDoesn't work, no more needs to be said beyond that.Version: 3.0

Please copy The Economist appPlease add audio to all articles. Also, implement something to let us quickly know what has been read/listen… Just copy The Economist fonctionalities..Version: 7.2.5

Poor updateNo multitasking despite having a great deal of time to implement this. Good content, poor app..Version: 2.1

Crashes frequently and is slowI'm using it in a brand new iPad Air so this is inexcusable..Version: 3.7.0

Where’s the search function? The Atlantic consistently contains excellent journalism; I still subscribe to the paper magazine. But the new(ish) app is much less functional than the old one: there’s no search function! I can’t find the last article by Graeme Wood: it’s down the memory hole. I end up logging in through my browser—the web design is great, and much more accessible. Both the iPad and iPhone apps have way too much blank space, and I hate the big “Good morning!/afternoon!/evening!”opening page. Just show me the top stories (with authors’ names, please!), and I’ll get reading. I don’t like the huge numbers and pictures that squeeze out the blurbs..Version: 6.1.2

UK Readers can’t access world articlesIt seems the relevant stories are inaccessible and there is no search option. Not a good app at all.Version: 5.1.6

Scanned PDFsTerrible. If you pay for a digital copy of the magazine, you just get a scanned PDF with hyperlinks to their website. Simply not up to standard for a magazine of this quality. The app embarrasses them..Version: 2.2

Good magazineThey make it way way way too complicated to try to cancel subscription, very sketchy in that way.Version: 7.2.3

No search functionThe Atlantic is a great magazine, but their app is completely useless without a search function. You’ll come across an article on the web, and it will offer to move you to the app, which is typically a better reading experience. But then it takes you to the app—not the article—and there’s no way to *find * the article because, as many others here have noted, there is no search function. Absolutely baffling hole that makes the app useless. And for the record, I am a logged-in subscriber..Version: 6.1.2

Can't wait for my subscription to expire......so I can go back to the paper magazine. This app has never been that good... Right now it's just plain bust..Version: 3.0

Please upgrade iPhone 5 screen!!Please upgrade iPhone 5 screen!!.Version: 3.0

Great content; annoying appThis is not a review of the content contained in the app, which is high quality. But the app itself is my least favorite news or media app that I regularly use. It logs you out periodically, so you have to theologian back in. At least the app has a search function now, even though it isn’t particularly useful (the top three results from a “Caitlin Flanagan” search are from 2018, 2008, and 2012). This is content you have to pay for, and the Atlantic should do better..Version: 7.2.6

Search box missingWhere is the search function ?.Version: 6.1.2

Why don’t images download with magazine?Have been a subscriber for years and love the magazine and use the app a lot. My one big frustration is that when I download the magazine to read offline on a plane or otherwise, none of the images download with it. Images are such a critical part of many Atlantic stories. Can this be fixed??.Version: 6.2.3

Terrible AppWish I could read it after paying for it. But download is soooo slow as to be dysfunctional. Money back, please..Version: 3.0

Lack of search function is very frustratingThe reading experience is good but highly marred by the lack of any search function. I’d expect a premium experience as a subscriber, but I often end up just using a web browser, because then I can search. Very frustrating to see articles linked to on social media and NOT be able to go to the app, find the article, and save for later reading. Seriously, please put a search function in there!.Version: 6.1.2

Ok, but could be betterThis app is functional, but doesn't at all take advantage of the features of the iPad to enhance the reading of the magazine. When looking at the magazine page view, the print is too small to read. When you tap for reading view, you get just a plain page of text with no sense of where you are in the magazine. Please consider updating the app to be more pleasing to use - like The New Yorker's app, for example..Version: 2.1

Pretty poor implementationI've got several different magazine apps on my iPad, all with varying degrees of quality, but the Atlantic app falls short on many levels. Probably the most annoying problem is the lack of any kind of handling when you switch back to it. Switch to another app and back, and you just get dumped back at the startup screen. If you we in the middle of an article you are out of luck, you'll need to find the issue you were in, navigate back to the article and scroll down to where you were. There's simply no excuse for not handling this properly..Version: 2.0

Fix the bugs!!!I have had to delete and reinstall this App so many times! The App logs me out, then when I sign in it does not recognize my subscription. The only solution seems to be to completely delete and then reinstall the app, then sign in. The helpful Atlantic people suggested the solution. If you are aware of the problem please fix it!! My subscription is paid up and is up to date. This is extremely frustrating and happens often. Please fix the problem..Version: 7.2.6

Still no searchI love the magazine. But there is no search function in the app. And you can’t ‘open’ a specific issue in the app. So you wind up going to the web site anyway, and repeatedly having to sign in. Just …. WHY???.Version: 6.1.2

Does a good job curating content; good luck reading anything elseThis app gives you a “good morning” feed and articles that are relevant to other things you’re reading. It is fine for a reader app. But it critically has no search function! And it also doesn’t interface with iOS such that you can send a link to it. So your friend shares a long form Atlantic article on Facebook or Slack, and you want to read it in this nice, distraction-free app you have and you…can’t. If it doesn’t happen to be in one of the curated feeds, good luck finding it. That I'm a subscriber to this publication and can’t read a specific article from this publication in the publication’s app is infuriating..Version: 6.2.3

UnresponsiveUnresponsive, no hint as to how to delete purchased issues, very badly implemented app..Version: 1.3

A great app missing one critical feature.I love the dark mode and the articles. I am baffled that despite so many mentioning it over the years that there is still no SEARCH FUNCTION! Come chaps, please add one. I’ve been forced to read so many articles over the web due to this lack of an obvious feature. Truly disappointed..Version: 6.1.2

Great content, app needs serious rethinkingGreat content needs no explanation. I like curated views, but in some ways it seems too curated because there’s absolutely no customization. I bought a subscription because I loved articles I stumbled online. However, now in the app, I’d like to find and bookmark said articles, but they are nowhere to be found. Found the year and month edition; found that edition in app, but apparently all articles from that edition aren’t in the app. There’s no search. Browsing by topic, just sends you through the same recent articles you see in other areas. Big push for newsletters. Who reads their personal newsletters anymore; we get enough email from work; personal emails are just for junk mail and password resets. Make newsletters/topics in the app. Let us choose our topics of interest feeds if we choose in addition to “today.”.Version: 6.1.2

App Needs some featuresI love the Atlantic - I’ve been a subscriber for awhile. The app is pretty good too, but it really needs a search function. It is so frustrating not to be able to look up articles. Also, I’d really like FB to link to the app, instead of opening my browser, where I can’t save it / bookmark it, and where there are ads. Otherwise, it’s a pretty good app..Version: 6.0.3

UnreliableWhen it works this is a perfectly decent app. But I find it hugely unreliable. I have spent days now trying to download the most recent issue of the magazine, without success. Each time I try the app simply closes and returns me to the iPad home screen. No error message, no explanation..Version: 3.0

AwfulI've never had so much trouble with an app as this one. Crashes constantly, won't let me install new issues. Updates do nothing. Have to constantly reinstall. For a magazine such high standing, the app is woefully amateur..Version: 3.8.1

Great publication marred by a low quality native appUpon opening the app for the first time, I’m treated to a blank “Today” tab. No prompt to log in, no onboarding guidance, just a blank screen. Not a strong start. There is no direct and obvious nav link to “Account” which is an unforgivable omission considering this is a paid subscription publication. There’s no “search” function which is —come on— the bare minimum in functionality. This app is so poorly designed it makes me wonder if there was even a product design team involved at all. Delivering competent media experiences via native mobile is a solved problem. To not even copy-paste best practices from some of the other publications out there that do this much better (NYT or The New Yorker, for example) seems like just wanton neglect. The “old print publication that doesn’t get digital media” trope is just so cliche in this day and age. Be better..Version: 6.2.3

App is unreliableI am a digital subscriber to the Atlantic. I am here reviewing the Atlantic mobile app, not the content of the magazine. The app is generally serviceable enough, with one big exception. I regularly encounter — generally meaning at least twice a week — the following problem. I open the app, tap on a story, and am immediately confronted by a screen inviting me to subscribe to the Atlantic, with subscription prices in large type. To read the story, I must sign in to the app. Needless to say this is highly inconvenient, especially since one of the benefits of having apps on a mobile device is supposed to be not having to sign in all the time. I have not experienced this problem with any other app for a publication or news site. In this respect, the Atlantic is unique..Version: 7.1.2

Some serious design flawsI absolutely love the magazine, but this app is seriously lacking a couple of features. First and foremost, there is no search function. Good luck finding many articles that are currently listed on the web site. And second, it is somewhat difficult to find an article you might see on the website and find it within one of the section categories. Often they are not listed. Who designed this? And, without a search. I have worked in IT for many years, designed and/or worked with designers, and this is just downright stupid. I reached out to support via chat and was told this is being corrected. It has been this way for at least a year or two. Bad, bad, bad..Version: 6.1.2

No Search Makes Navigating PainfulSeriously!? Even magazines have a TOC to help you quickly navigate through the pages. The fact that I can’t search for an author I like, or for keywords to create my own reading lists makes this app extremely frustrating to use. I don’t understand the point of an app that forces you to scroll blindly through information hoping you’ll land on the article you’re looking for. I stopped using it and spend most of my time on the website where I can actually find the stories my colleagues and friends have recommended I read. Don’t waste your time on this app. UPDATE: I’m tentatively upgrading my rating on the promise of a search function. But I still find it very difficult and time-consuming to navigate. I spend almost all my time on the website instead of the app. I’m curious to see what it means when the developers say they want to “get it right” with search..Version: 6.0.3

Worst mag app I've seenIn the past two years I've seen the Atlantic "upgrade" their app repeatedly, each time causing problems. This time, I now have no access to my magazines, regardless of deleting and reinstalling..Version: 4.0

Is this app intentionally frustrating? We’re on the App Store, not a journalism review forum so I won’t go into the Atlantic as a publication. Undeniably, they do world class journalism. The app on the other hand? It’s had several glaring annoyances for so long it’s starting to seem intentional: 1) Most notably - no search (or impossible to find). At this point it seems intentional. It’s baseline functionality that users have been requesting for a LONG time. Just read the reviews. I don’t always use the app to see what their algorithms thought I should read or to launch a lengthy expedition through their “Sections.” If I’m looking for an article or author it should take me seconds to find a list. I can’t fathom an argument against this feature 2) strangely strict curation. No way to build a feed off your favorite author or topic (don’t get me started on Sections) 3) Sharing. I am a longtime subscriber and have the app which is tied to my subscription. Same for several friends and family. Why would the Atlantic app share a story link which only opens in Safari…which usually hits me with the paywall??? I already subscribed. I already signed in. Send me to the freaking app you brag about in your digital subscription feature list!!!!!!!!! I truly hope someone responds and points out features I overlooked. Otherwise I may downgrade to print only. Why pay for digital access if the app is this frustrating?.Version: 7.0.1

Redesign just so-soThe home page redesign just doesn’t cut it for me. Too much white space and relatively big images which leads to a lot of scrolling to figure out the content. A more concise design and at a glance overview would have been better. To me there was nothing wrong with the old home page design. I also would like a separate “dark mode on/off” setting within the app so that it is possible to set the mode independently of the general settings. I prefer to read black on white no matter what time of day but would like to keep the rest of my apps set to the general setting and not always switch back and forth..Version: 6.0

Great magazine, but the app is rubbishComplete rubbish!.Version: 3.5.2

UselessCan't read anything for free in app, and yet I can read their articles for free on their website. Doesn't make any sense..Version: 5.0.1

So incredibly disappointing.Though I've been a long time fan of the writing The Atlantic seems to be on a path to destroy what was once an extraordinary publication. I am a paying customer with a login to the digital publication. Not only do articles now contain multiple very large obtrusive blinking glaring block ads which are a complete disgrace to the publication, apparently instead of writing new content they republish the old. The republishing is less of a problem but to split an article into blocky segment separated by blocks of ads is so disruptive and disappointing. With the current format and blemish on this longtime publication I am no longer willing to pay to support them..Version: 7.2.6

What the....Ever since the update last week this app is just a spinning wheel of frustration. In one week I have read once, only after uninstalling and reinstalling it again. Needs a fix.Version: 3.0

No search function!Unbelievable there is no search function in this app. Disappointing..Version: 6.1.2

Great content, irritating designFantastic journalism of course, but it’s annoying to use. First and foremost the app doesn’t automatically open when you open an Atlantic link in Safari. Second is the newsletter-style homepage that shows a mix of new and old content. It’s a nice idea but I would prefer a curated list of recent content like a normal website homepage. Also, no search function and no usable author bio pages to show their previous work..Version: 6.1

Deleting issuesDoes anyone know how to delete old issues within this app?.Version: 2.2

Heavy use of ads even for subscribersHave been an Atlantic digital subscriber for many years. I recently bought a tablet and, upon using it over The Atlantic, was appalled by its heavy use of ads. Makes reading a most unpleasant experience. I immediately deleted the app..Version: 7.2.4

Crashes all the timeIs very clunky at "downloading new content" and frequently crashes with no way of fixing it other than deleting and reinstalling the app..Version: 3.8.0

Crashes constantlyI love the magazine but your app is a mess. Crashes every time I try to open it. Tried everything, no use. No way to access my subscription on my phone..Version: 6.1.1

Unusably badUgh. I honestly can't even figure out how to use this app. Where are issues of the magazine? Home screen is just list of their latest stories. Tap 'download' for new issue and nothing happens. Then it randomly crashes too. So annoying..Version: 4.0.1

PoorThe free content is difficult to navigate and isn't always formatted for the screen. It is unclear what extra content would be available for a subscription or how it would be managed from within the app. All pretty poor ... and not likely to encourage new revenue..Version: 2.1

Lacking obvious SearchAs others have mentioned, the lack of search functionality is a glaring omission..Version: 6.1.1

New redesign stopes me from readingI used to read articles with the app every day. Since the redesign of the app I stopped reading the Atlantic articles. Today when paying my credit card bill I noticed a charge from apple store and I did not remember buying anything today. I checked the record and it was Atlantic subscription. I did not open the app in months. I open the app to see if anything changed. The design is not for me. I will read in the browser but I am afraid that I will drop the subscription since I am not reading articles..Version: 6.0.4

A terrible app, with extremely limited functionalityLove the writing in the Atlantic. So disappointed in this app, which appears to be limited to a small curated list of articles, and no ability to listen to them via the app, even when you can listen to the same article via the website. If The Atlantic wants to remain relevant, they need to serve their subscribers, who do much of their thoughtful “reading” on the go—driving to work, out exercising, etc. Why can’t I simply queue up a few articles to listen to when I’m commuting or exercising? Limiting the audio to when I’m on a computer or navigating the website on a tablet is pointless—I can actually just read the text then..Version: 7.2.6

Redesign needs a redesignI’ll echo what some other people have said about the redesign... it really reduced the information density and makes it hard to browse quickly and easily. I’ll leave it to UI theorists to delve into the why of it, but let’s just say they should have paid some folks to take a look at that, or at least offer some settings to rectify the issue. App has always been a little barebones and feature-free, but this took most of the utility out of it for me. I don’t have time to scroll through full-page pictures of Trump when what I really want to do is read stories. Unsubscribed from the magazine and uninstalling the app..Version: 6.0

Poor use of screen real estate.Excellent journalism, but the app does a very poor job helping me find it. When I open the app, I see ‘Good afternoon’, an image, and not a single article until I scroll down further. Almost as if the app was designed exclusively for a nursing home and/or vision impaired audience. As I scroll, the entire screen real estate of my iPad is used to show just one article at a time. If I go to ‘Latest’, I am shown three articles at a time, with a huge amount of white space in between. This app makes it very time consuming to get a cross section of the latest journalism from The Atlantic. That’s a real shame. Another major frustration I have is that the app loses my place in an article and takes me back to the start if I rotate between portrait and landscape. This is a major annoyance on a long article where you find yourself trying to get back to where you were. Top quality journalism, but the app UI/UX needs an overhaul..Version: 6.1.1
