Pepperplate Cooking Planner for Negative User Reviews

TerribleA great app. Poorly managed execution of forced payment or lose all….Version: 2.8

ScamI happily used the app for over 8 years. Developers decided to monetise it with a monthly subscription. I paid so I could access my recipes and despite 3 emails to the developers have not been given access to my recipes, and instead get locked out within seconds with prompted to pay... Wish i never used the app as I have over 300 recipes i need to replicate and find into a different app now..Version: 3.1.4

I have switched to something elseAfter happily using Pepperplate for years - and recommending it to others - I have switched to Paprika. Some of the functionality of Pepperplate had been glitchy for a bit, but I was shocked to log in the other day to see that I would need to pay $2.99/month or $32.99/year in perpetuity to continue using the app. I am happy to pay for an app, but it has to be reasonable, and this is not. Clearly, they have no idea what their competition is offering. I have PURCHASED Paprika for $6.99. They obviously have gained a lot of Pepperplate users lately, as they have very clear directions on importing recipes from Pepperplate..Version: 2.8

GreedyAfter using the app for nearly 10 years they have now decided to shut down my account unless I pay £2.99 per month. Absolute joke. I’m fed up of these app developers getting greedy and expecting people to sign up to sub standard apps. A one off payment I wouldn’t mind but not a chance I’m paying 2.99 for the rest of my life for this. Really disappointed.Version: 3.1.7

Not enoughNice enough app, nice idea but it only lets you bring recipes in from specific sites, which is really limited. Plus, no photos of the recipes. ;-(.Version: 2.8

Not worth $3 a monthLoved this app. But to jump from free to $3 per month with only 14 days notice is ridiculous. Had they decided to charge a one time reasonable fee I would have happily paid. At $3 a month for an otherwise trivial app? No thanks. Goodbye Pepperplate..Version: 2.8

Ridiculous!I WILL NOT PAY for an app to hold my recipes! Like many others, I have used this app for years with my mom’s and grandmother’s recipes. Get bent you money hungry buggers. I have deleted your POS app..Version: 3.1.7

Loved this App until...Simple App that did what I wanted = hold my recipes under one roof, no useless "bling bling"! I didn't need a grocery list, I didn't need a social media button, I didn't need you to propose me recipes and I was willing to have adds here for your maintenance needs, but someone became a bit too greedy! 36$/year (3$/m) to hold my recipes...ouff, someone really smoked something way too strong in your team! Even your "export" instructions were not helpful. Well, enjoy your decent to the wonderful world of dying App! We will easily survive using another App (Free or 1 "small" purchase fee)!!!.Version: 2.8

Paying for NothingI’ve used this App for YEARS. Years!! There has never been an update or enhancement. But it was free and worked ok, so whatever. Definitely could have used enhancements but again, free. Now all of a sudden it’s $2.99 a MONTH and not one single improvement or enhancement. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and have been paying, expecting surely an update would come, but no, I’m literally using the same app that used to be free but now it’s $36 a year. To add insult to injury it has lately been glitching! The menu and “+” buttons on the main screen won’t work if I come back to that screen after being in the shopping list or planner. I have to hard stop the app and come back in to navigate. What a piece of crap. I have YEARS of data in this app. I have used it quite literally every single day. I started paying when they switched to a paid version. I’ve given them the benefit of the doubt but this app has passed its prime and without support/enhancements I’ve got to abandon it..Version: 3.1.7

Had a good thing going...It was a great app, then got greedy. And now we’re out. 👎🏻.Version: 3.1.6

For what? After years of using this app I suddenly get a message that my “free trial” is up and now have to pay $3.99 a month to get access to my recipes again. Not sure what the $3.99 is for when you’re not providing me with the recipes, I input them myself. Thankfully if you log into the website instead of the app you can export your recipes out of the service. Exported recipes and deleted the app..Version: 3.1.1

Sad... they want monthly subscription. Dumping it!Not paying 3.99 monthly. Check out Paprika! Better access to download.Version: 3.1.3

Blocked outI used the app for a couple of years and saved so many recipies - Not the am easiest to use but worked ok). It was free with no notification that I would have to pay. Now suddenly I have been locked out and my email is Not recognised. I have had no notification of a change or requirement to login. Not happy!.Version: 3.0

Terrible business senseApp worked really well for what I needed for many years until they recently changed to a paid monthly billing. Probably should have spent the market research dollars instead of losing downloads and getting bad reviews. Maybe introducing a premium paid option in addition to the free plan. I won’t come back if this is how business is done.Version: 2.8

Goodbye PepperplateI've used Pepperplate for a few years now & used to love it for cooking & planning. However, it has just starting falling over immediately each & every time, forcing me to use the website. Ok if I'm at home, not so great when needing special recipes for my gluten-free, lactose-free & fructose-free child when catering away from home. I've had to find a new app. I've always had a problem with the shopping list which has some strange categorisation, doesn't save custom changes categories & doesn't recognise Australian terms for many foods..Version: 2.7

It's good but.....It is a great concept and works well... Does everything in the app description perfectly and is a very nicely designed recipe book, much better than any other I have seen in the app store. The only thing I would like is to be able to add and edit recipes from the iPad and iPhone rather than having to go through an Internet browser..Version: 1.4

Get bentHorrible developer decision. Used to be a free app now with my iOS update I’m forced to update the app and pay 3.99 a month. I’d pay a one time fee of maybe $10 but your not Netflix. my recipes are my content not yours I’ll be deleting the app thankfully I can still save my recipes that are on my iPad.Version: 3.2.0

Needs updatingLoved this app but it needs to be updated as it does not utilize the whole screen (on a iPhone 11 Pro Max). It is cut off at the top & bottom making it look so small even on the Max!.Version: 2.8

Subscription modelApp charges you to access recipes you’ve saved or added yourself. It doesn’t provide any content. Just a storage and format. Not worth it. I’d previously paid a flat fee and now they charge a subscription. Saved recipes & deleted.Version: 3.1.7

Great idea - but not useable any moreI cook a lot & need a recipe file app to be quick & easy to use. Pepperplate used great, but it has been getting more & more buggy. Considering there hasn't been an update in over a year, the app is unstable & I'm scared of losing the 500 recipes I've got stored, I think it's time to change to a more reliable app..Version: 2.7

DisappointingJust started to use this app, but found categories function does not work on MacBookpro 2016; photos dont upload on computer, only on iPhone, and no customer support, so therefore don't think I trust app enough to spend time loading all my recipes into it. Also, so called supported sites also unable to import recipes from. If app did what it says it does, it would be fabulous..Version: 2.8

Not worth the $3/month to store RecipesI used to like this app for years as it’s a simple app that save my recipes in a simple layout. But after years of no update I suddenly got a message that I only have 14 day trial after that i’ll be lock out unless I pay $3 per month! The developer got greedy, it’s not worth the price and I don’t even access my recipes that often. I’ll just save my recipes in a word document than paying $36 per year! Good luck for this app’s slow death..Version: 2.8

Not worth itInitially the app was free and now it ask me to pay $3.99/month to access all my stored recipe. I don’t mind paying one time cost but definitely not a monthly fee. Not going to use it anymore..Version: 3.1.1

VERY disappointingI have stored my own recipes on this app and found it useful for this. I’ve never been able to get it to import recipes from other sites. It’s always been a lengthy copy paste or write your own process. Which I didn’t mind to keep things in one place. However now years of data can’t be accessed and they want us to pay a subscription service to access our own recipes. Seriously what extra are you providing for this excessive cost. How many subscription services do all these app developers think ppl can handle, it’s just getting ridiculous. Everyone is getting super greedy in this world..Version: 3.1.3

Slimy move..I’ve used this app for years to store hundreds of recipes I’ve collected and, like everyone else that you’ve decided to lock out of their account, I’m disappointed. What a shady move, shame on you. I would have happily paid a one time fee, like so many other great apps out there (seems everyone is switching to Paprika now).. but a $3 monthly subscription? For what? So I can access my recipes on the rare occasion that I need to, every couple weeks maybe? I hope you give your head a shake and realize the benefit in allowing users to continue accessing their account. I don’t care about whatever bells and whistles you promised, let users decide to pay for your fancy upgrades with in app purchases. I just need my recipes..Version: 2.8

IPhone app needs an import optionI use this app almost every day. I like having convenient access to my favorite recipes at the grocery store and when I am cooking. I find a lot of new recipes online and like to import them into pepperplate. It helps me keep track of my online recipes easily in a format that is easy to read. I could not give this app 5 stars because there is not an option to import a web recipe from the iPhone. I almost exclusively use my iPhone to search for recipes, follow the recipe, and store the recipes in pepperplate. It is such a pain to have to sit down at my desktop later to find the recipe again and import it then, when it could be done quickly from my iPhone if this was an option. I can even import a recipe from my husband's iPad. Why not my phone? Can you please, please add this feature to the iPhone app. The other upgrades are working well. This is all the app is missing. Otherwise I could easily give this app 5 stars..Version: 2.5

Why am I now paying for an app that no longer works properly?Pepperplate has been a brilliant app for years! Disappointing that a few months after introducing a fee for it, a couple of its major features have become worse than useless. I have lost my shopping list completely several times in the last week. And it is no longer synching between appliances. I’ve started looking at other app options because I will not be renewing my subscription if it no longer delivers a workable service..Version: 3.1.2

Pay wallApp was free. Then then updated it and started charging..Version: 3.1.3

Now have to payI was using this app and LOVED it for years until they made it a paid subscription app. I don’t understand why you need to ask for such a large subscription amount and couldn’t find a way to keep your existing customers with their current recipes and have new members subscribe. I am sure you could have restricted access for free users and full access for new or paying subscribers. An explanation would be nice!!!.Version: 3.1.7

Sneaky fee - DisappointingHad this app years ago and it was great. I was quite disappointed to find upon downloading the app just now, that there is now a subscription fee! The fee is also sneakily applied as you have to read an email to find out you’ve somehow agreed to an auto renewing monthly subscription after your two week “free trial”. I’d have been happy to pay a one off charge for the app but I’m certainly not happy with the sneaky subscription model. Off to delete the app now..Version: 3.1.6

Needs an iOS 10 update ASAP!I had to cut back a couple of stars because some improvements need to me made with regard to iOS 10 compatibility. Since I've upgraded, I've noticed that whenever you leave the app (say, using multitasking to switch to another app) and come back, the app reloads back to the home screen (recipes). This can cause checked items on the shopping list to be unchecked again because the app hasn't synchronized with the server. Another flaw is that when sending multiple recipes (unfortunately in separate emails...would like to see that soon), choosing the email option on a different recipe after you've already sent one will result in sending an email with the previous recipe. It's like the first recipe you sent gets stuck. This issue, of course, is resolved by quitting the app and relaunching it. This app makes my weekly meal planning much simpler and I hope to see an update soon. I'm disappointed that the last update was Sept. 2015..Version: 2.8

Quite goodJust started using this app and while its quite good it could use some improvements. I'd like an option in the settings to see a month view (I.e grid format so you could see the whole month of July for example) so I can quickly see that I'm not doubling up. Also the options for pictures of the recipe to be shown in the calendar view. A direct link to the pepper plate website (preferably loading in-app and with the ability to load in recipes) would be great! Otherwise I'm really likening it so far!.Version: 2.5

Even one star is too muchHaving to pay for my own recipes, that totally ridiculous!.Version: 3.1.3

It was working really well until...It started crushing. idk why, one minute i was saving a recipe then next it crushed and wouldn't open... update please!.Version: 2.5

Yeah & nahI quite like the app, however, it can be frustrating to copy & paste recipes. More frustrating is the monthly subscription. Any chance of a one of purchase fee as not much has changed since purchasing it?.Version: 3.2.0

Windows 8 app won't syncI love almost everything about this app. My favourite is the Windows 8 app, as the planner is excellent, scrolling back is easy and you can even plan ahead. However it doesn't sync with the web version. So the mobile app is useless to me. The mobile app doesn't allow you to delete an item just to 'move it' needs fixing.Version: 2.5

Loyalty & Transparency IssuesJan 30, 2020 I was surprised to see the email announcing the countdown clock had started on the forced 14 day free trial too. Even more mysterious that there is no in-app notice that tell us this information or shows how many days are left. It also is not clear whether we’ll be charged automatically if we open the app after the trial has expired, or if we will just be locked out of the app. I went to the Pepperplate website and logged in to my account. It shows how many days are left in the trial, so why can’t this information be displayed in the app on the account page? I don’t blame the app developers for wanting to capitalize on their investment of time and effort and to be able to afford improvements to the app. Unfortunately the way they have chosen to implement the fee does not follow the ‘golden rule’, "Treat others the same way you want them to treat you.” Luke 6:31 June 2020 UPDATE - I’ve opened the app off and on since the 14 day trial was announced back in January, and have had no issues viewing my recipes. I have not been charged anything, nor does the App Store page indicate that any in-app purchases are required..Version: 2.8

Surprise! You can’t access your recipes anymore!!!Great app or cross platform access to my recipes that I’ve spent countless hours adding, updating, and streamlining recipes in for over 6 years, only to log on and be told that I am now using my 14 day free trial, after which I will have to pay if I want access to my recipes. No prior notification of any kind even though I was on the mail list for news and updates? What kind of loyalty to your users is that? I used to rave about this app to everyone. Now? No thanks..Version: 2.8

Website good but app needs improvementInstalled to make meal planning easier but have found app rather lacking. Easy to put meals into planner but unlike online site they have to be put in as a recipe first (online you can just type something in) and you have to click on each individual day to view (online you can see whole week at once). Not used shopping list function yet but online have found some items didn't make it to list at all. Shall probably stick to using website for now..Version: 2.3

Whoever is in charge of your customer service needs to be retrained fr 😐I’ve used Pepperplate for maybe ten years and was surprised in January (like everyone) when I tried to sign in on my laptop only to find that they had switched to a paid subscription service with no warning. However, my iOS app continued to work, so it seemed like the desktop access was a separate premium feature. Evidently, the company failed to learn from their move in January when hundreds of their users voiced their displeasure re: suddenly losing access to the service with no warning. I’m now locked out of my iOS app too. ☺️ it’s also cool that they have responded to exactly 0 of their former users’ concerns on any of their social media platforms. Honestly, I’m a broke grad student but I can probably scrape together $33 USD per year. But I’m going to switch to Paprika and give them my money because of how Pepperplate has handled this. People reading this review looking for a freemium option might be interested in Big Oven..Version: 3.1

Paid app not worth it.Totally agree with reviews posted here about Pepplate moving to a paid subscription. I would’ve paid $2 $5 as a one time charge for the app to avoid the hassle of moving my recipes. It’s a bit of a fire drill right now to get off Pepperplate but I will. The app is lacking tons of features I would have liked. I put up with it because it was free and the path of leaf resistance since I was on it for years. If they follow through with this paid subscription model I will be gone..Version: 2.8

LOVE THIS APP....just wish there was more supportHave not seen another recipe app as cool as this. Love the feature where I can add categories and find, for example, all "Chicken" recipes. Great idea. Also like the "planner" (I used a lot) and the ability to add photos. I don't even mind adding recipes manually for unsupported apps. Just wish they would actually resolve the issues . With last update on iPhone, I can no longer save any recipes - it refuses to sync. So what good is it? I wouldn't even mind paying for this app if it was supported. But no update since Sept 2015? Where did the developers go? They seem very nice when responding to emails, just no follow-through on solving the problems. Advice - charge $1.99 for the app and hire help. It would be nice to actually "add" recipes to your app again. Hope it works again soon, haven't been able to use for over a month..Version: 2.8

Great app, but it’s not working anymoreThis app was great and a timesaver with saving recipes from magazines. Not working now. Why???!!.Version: 2.8

Recipe import failureSeems to be a great app but it is alarming that the latest update was so long ago, and the recipe import from website feature is not working. Also, when trying to click the Help button, the app crashes..Version: 2.8

Would be nearly perfect if it weren't so buggyVersion 2.0 added the main features to make this one of my favorite apps. Mostly, I wanted to be able to input my own recipes directly on my iPad. Writing a short recipe isn't a problem. While writing a longer more complex recipe though, I frequently encountered duplicate instructions and ingredients, or I'd save my work only to find half the work I just typed in gone when I returned to the recipe despite seeing the changes there after I saved. Since you can't copy several instructions at a time, I can't even do the poor man's save of copying to the buffer as a precaution. I love the idea of the wifi timer, but I couldn't get the iPad to respond and authorize my iPhone. Fix the bugs and I may consider 5 stars after I put the app though its paces. At the very least it would warrant 4.5. Things I love: the ability to control when things sync is great, the shopping list is really nice, the planner is easy to use. 2 suggestions for the next version - Please allow users to switch the order of the instructions and ingredients. It helps when trying to clarify instructions or if you've adding new things or forgotten things. Please allow users to mail the shopping list to someone else. Helpful if you aren't the one doing the shopping and that person (inexplicably) doesn't have an iGadget. Thanks!.Version: 2.0

Used to be goodThis used to be a GREAT app that I recommended to many and used almost daily FOR FREE. Then, out of the blue, I’m informed that my ‘free trial’ will be concluding and they ask for an ongoing subscription which I’m opposed to. An app that’s already developed and they’d like me to purchase it, sure. But ongoing monthly payments? Why? Having seen the more recent reviews, it seems you get absolutely NO bang for your buck. Don’t waste your money (or time in setting the recipes up). Go elsewhere..Version: 3.1.5

MehDownloaded bc I read in a blog how great it was and then the first recipe I went to upload from the browser was “not supported”. I’ll pass..Version: 3.2.0

Effortlessly syncsI love how easy it is to save recipes via the browser plugin, and then view them on my iPad. Fairly straightforward to use, and the tag feature means I can organise and search through my recipes. The meal planner options are less than ideal, though, and as someone who needs to chop and change ideas before settling on a final plan, I'm going to stick to using pen and paper for that one. Still, great as a recipe catalogue..Version: 2.8

Seriously?Obviously you did not do your homework. When you charge a subscription you need to offer something in return which you don’t. I recommend your app for many years but not anymore. Was very easy to move my recipes over to Paprika..Version: 2.8

LostI enjoyed this app, put many of my grandmothers recipes on it, now I am locked out and lost everything..Version: 3.1.6

Bad appI can’t access my recipes anymore. I had to pay for a month subscription to get them. I still can’t get them!!! Asking for a reimbursement right away.Version: 3.1.4

This is how you ruin a great appWhat was once great is now simply a money-making scheme. A once-free app now requires a monthly fee, but doesn’t offer any benefits for the subscription, beyond allowing users the “privilege” of paying to access their own recipes. I got Pepperplate when it was first released 10 years ago, and I was thrilled to have a dedicated app for storing my recipes all in one place - I never used the menu planning or anything else; for me, it was all about having an online, dedicated place for the countless recipes that I’ve collected from multiple generations of family members, friends, magazines, cookbooks, online, etc. I spent hours curating all of my recipes - old family recipe cards that had faded, recipe books we had made over the years, web recipes that I’d collected... so that I would have them all in one place. It wasn’t the most convenient app, since you had to either scroll alphabetically through the entire list each time you wanted a specific recipe, or have saved it in your favourites, but at least they were all in one place. Had the developers asked for a one-time fee, I would have been willing to pay it. However, now, to access my personal recipes - many that I created myself - I need to pay a RIDICULOUS PRICE of $3/month. There was no warning from the developers, no notice for me to have a chance to move my information elsewhere. Now, since apparently, even the 14-day grace period that they were temporarily offering has expired, I am forced to pay for the subscription until I move everything off the app to somewhere else - no small task, but now a priority. This is what greed does: ruins a great thing and destroys a loyal following..Version: 3.1.7

Have you read.....?I do not like giving out my email to apps like this or on the Internet because of all the ridiculous junk mail that floods my mail box. You HAVE to register and provide your email before you can even check out any recipes or look around to decide if you wish to keep the app. If you go to "Terms of Use" and read it you would think you were attempting to sign up for top security at the Pentagon!!!! Paragraph after paragraph after even more paragraphs of you mustn't do this and you mustn't do that, and you must even send written permission to quit using this application or cancel your "contract" with Pepperplate!!! HUH? I've never heard of such ridiculous rules to just look at the recipes in a recipe app! I have several wonderful recipe apps on my ipad without having to sell my soul away , so trashcan, here I come, prepped and primed and all ready to toss away a "plate!" As in PepperPlate, that is!!!!.Version: 2.2

CrashingI used this app every single day on my iPhone but the last 2 upgrades cause the app to crash on opening. I have waited long enough for upgrade to come through so sadly will be deleting it from my phone..Version: 2.7

Fix synch please!I love everything about this app except the synchronisation between my iPhone and iPad. I frequently head out to the shops after preparing my list on my iPad only to discover that for some reason the synch with my iPhone has DELETED my entire list. Very annoying! I can't find anywhere within the app to post this bug, but would love to upgrade my review to 5 stars once this is resolved..Version: 2.3

Money hungry lost meOver the last 15+ years of using this app, we have accumulated over 500 recipes and meal plans. However, during that time the platform has broken down- from not allowing recipe imports from websites, to syncing and erasing my grocery lists. We have experienced more problems in the last 2 years than benefits. We received an email in December or January stating Pepperplate wanted to charge for services. We waited to see if they improved the app as promised. There are no improvements. Our recipes were held for ransom of a monthly fee or download to our computer. We chose to download our recipes and say goodbye to Pepperplate. We have moved to Recipe Keeper which imports from websites, syncs across devices, and shows the recipes under the grocery items so we know what recipe we needed special items for. We are incredibly pleased with Recipe Keeper and the ease of using it. It’s refreshing to have a working database, grocery list and planner for less than 3 months of what Pepperplate is charging for their failing app..Version: 3.1.2

Initially loved it, now I'm irritatedI have to admit that I have use(d) this app a lot. It is so nice to have all of your recipes in one place and have them synced between computer, phone, tablet. It's also visually appealing as opposed to a lot of the other hokie-looking apps. It is easy to add new recipes from the website, not so much from the app. I used the shopping list feature all of the time, but the meal planning feature has a lot of bugs, and there are a few other random bugs as well. I gave pepper plate 2 stars on my revised rating because the website and my phone/tablet will no longer sync. This is after trying to solve the problem on my own with app and hardware updates, rebooting, etc. I can't use the app if it doesn't sync, plus the app is quite user unfriendly as opposed to the website. I am also tired of all of the bugs that have yet to be fixed. I would gladly pay up to $10 for this app if it would actually do what it is supposed to do. It is an amazing idea and has the potential to be just that. Please fix the bugs!!!!.Version: 2.3

Want you money suddenly! For years I have used this great app for saving my recipes. Suddenly I opened the app one day saying I need to pay $3.99 monthly to access my recipes again! Wish I had saved them somewhere else. Bunch of money hungry developers out of the blue!.Version: 3.1.3

FailI gave a previous version 4 stars but I just updated my iPad mini to ios8 and decided to update all my apps at the same time. Big mistake. Won't even open..Version: 2.7

Recipes are behind paywallAfter using this app for nearly 10 years, I was informed by email today that I have been given a 14 day free trial and if I want to access my recipes and meal plans after this time, I have to pay $2.99 A MONTH. Now if this were a top range, cutting edge piece of coding.. I may be tempted to keep my decade worth of recipes intact.. or if the developer was a little less greedy and opted for a one off payment. But no.. I shall spend my “free trial” exporting my recipes.. atm by hand as none of the “share” functions have ever worked properly. In a free app, the many shortcomings like inability to share or link up social media, the inability to reliably import from other sites (you end up having to edit heavily to make an imported recipe usable), the outdated and cumbersome coding.. are overlooked and expected. But for $2.99 I would expect this app not only to order my recipes in alphabetical order but actually come round and help with the prep. I’ll be paying a one off to paprika and be done..Version: 2.8

No warning about a new Paywall??So you’ve essentially locked your loyal users out of their recipes unless they pay for the subscription. Nice way to show your appreciation for people who showed support for years using your app. Best practice would be to have provided some notice, of course you didn’t do that because you knew there would be higher churn. Very poor way to run your business..Version: 3.1.4

Is this pointless app.Silly me, I thought that there would be lots of menus to browse through. Not one. Seems you have to import your own. I keep hundreds of recipes in Pages, but I keep looking for other ideas and recipes. If I have got it right I have to troll the net for recipes, copy them to pages and then to this app. Am I missing something or is this app pointless..Version: 2.8

I left 4 years agoI downloaded this app about 5yrs ago, and used it a lot. I loaded all my recipes on, it took ages. You stopped updating it about 4yrs ago, so I moved everything onto Paprika. I won’t be returning everything back again - you can’t have updates 4 years apart and expect people to use it. And I definitely WOULD NOT be paying you a subscription fee to access recipes that I made up in the first place. I’m so relieved I moved everything before your greed began..Version: 3.1.2

2.99 for an old app?Opened the app today after a while and instantly got an email saying that after a trial I’ll have to pay $2.99 for the privilege of using it. Now, if the app a) had been updated in more than 4 years and b) actually fit an iPhone 11 Pro screen correctly, I probably wouldn’t be writing this review. But alas, none of those things have happened, so I think I’ll have to take my recipes elsewhere. I think it’s a bit hard to charge for features that aren’t even added yet. Shame..Version: 2.8

Not Paying😡😡😡😡😡😡😡I considered this the best app on my phone and iPad until they asked for a monthly subscription....yes I have a lot of recipes I have collected but I will not pay $5 per month to access my own devices....DO NOT ASK PEOPLE TO PAY FOR THIS EVERY MONTH......I would have considered a one off fee or even an annual fee of around $10 but not $5 per month......can’t give no stars otherwise I would have😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡.Version: 3.1.6

Subscription? No thanksJust saw the email from Pepperplate about their plans to go to a subscription model, thereby holding my hundreds of recipes ransom after a couple weeks. Unless I get them transferred first, of course. ⏱ In looking for a viable alternative, I’m going to be checking out Recipe Keeper, who have a one-time fee (per platform) for unlimited recipes, though free for first 20 recipes. Also saw something about RecipeSage (on Reddit), so will check that out too. It seems to be free; while I don’t believe there’s an app yet (for iOS), or plans for one, it can be accessed via the website while on mobile..Version: 2.8

You’re kidding right? The app hasn’t been updated in 4 years. The import function does not work for allrecipes - a major recipe site. And now you are going to a subscription fee model? This app is acceptable for a one time $2 payment. I refuse to pay a monthly subscription for this subpar app. Buh bye..Version: 2.8

Only missing one thing...Great organising tool. I use the app on my iPod and it makes cooking so much easier. One of the few apps that i can access without internet, this is what makes this app most convenient for me. I'm quite disappointed that when using the app on my iPod I can't view my recipes by categories, only by date and title. The app also needs a unit converter..Version: 2.3

Import too limited & can't cut & paste recipe details & photos from other sourceThe sites that you can import recipes are severely limited. I have many recipes on my iPad which I have imported from sites not supported my this app & I can't cut & paste the recipe photos & details from either the original website of my iPad Very disappointing. I will have to add ALL recipes manually before I can see if the other functions are as lacking, if I can be bothered I will review my rating.Version: 2.3

Pretty goodIt's a pretty good app! When in the meal planner though, it would be more convenient if you tapping the name of the meal could take you to the meal details. Also, a weekly view like on the website would be fabulous. Perhaps when viewing the meal plan in landscape mode?.Version: 2.3

Love/HateI have a love/hate relationship with PP. It's got great features and I use it almost daily. On the downside, you can't email shopping lists which is annoying unless you are the one who always does meal planning and shopping (shared tasks in my home). I always seem to have some challenges editing grocery lists as well. For example, we eat lots of garlic in our house. If there are 4 recipes that call for garlic, the app puts them on your shopping list like this: 3 cloves garlic 1 clove garlic, chopped 4 cloves garlic, minced 2 cloves garlic I like to edit that as "1 head garlic" because obviously you don't buy individual cloves so it streamlines my shopping list and gives me a more accurate count of how many items I actually will need to purchase (useful to me for estimating grocery costs and how long it will take me to shop). Anyway, both the app and the desktop site are extremely frustrating. You have to individually delete and edit each line one at a time, save it, and then go to the next line. It literally cannot handle more than one operation/edit at once. Generally speaking, both the app and site are super glitchy. It wigs out, freezes up and runs so slow sometimes that I wonder if we've transported back to '98 and dial up Internet. Aggravation! If they'd just fix those few things, it would be utterly perfect..Version: 2.7

Syncing is hit-and-missI've used this app for a couple of years now. I like that it stores my recipes and then generates a shopping list based on my meal plan for the week. The one annoyance is syncing. I compile the shopping list on my iPad and sync, but when I open the app on my phone to go shopping, this sync overwrites and deletes the shopping list I'd just created. Argh! I notice this app hasn't been updated in over a year, so maybe it's time for me to find a new recipe/shopping list app..Version: 2.8

Great for meal prepI had to change my ratings as this app just went to a monthly subscription model after years of not updating and seemingly just forgetting about the app. Still no real update but they want me to pay them $4 month? Nope, just deleted the app. I’ll use something else. Would have been okay with paying once but not for years. Not worth it..Version: 3.1.1

Why did this app stop working on the iPad?I love this app but lately, i haven’t been able to use the import recipe feature. Now the app doesn’t work on the iPad. Please fix it so that it works again. The app worked great before!.Version: 2.8

My Recipes held RansomI’ve used this app for many a year and really enjoyed using it, saving all my favourite recipes in it. Today I opened it & couldn’t access my recipe bank as it was being held hostage for the outrageous amount of $4.99 a month or $$60 a year. That’s right folks, highway robbery! From free to a ridiculous amount. If you want to charge, I can understand that but this price is utterly ridiculous. It’s a great recipe app folks but this price is ridiculous. Looks like I’ll be moving my recipes elsewhere if I can eventually free my recipes. Despicable behaviour..Version: 3.1

Can’t access Pepperplate at allI’m trying to access Pepperplate, but when I open the app, it tells me to sign up for my monthly Pepperplate membership. I’m trying to do that, but it won’t let me go forward at all. Help..Version: 3.0

Subscription was a terrible ideaThe app was good until it went to an incredibly expensive subscription. You don’t get anything more for all that money except access to your recipes. Might as well go get a free app for that. I wouldn’t have a problem paying a one-time fee for the app, but the ongoing subscription fees they are asking for is ridiculous. Change to a one-time fee, and I’ll come back..Version: 3.1.6

Unable to access recipesBeen a user for many years, I've now been automatically subscribed to a free trial which I did not authorize and unable to access my recipes unless I stay subscribed. A subscription is fine for new customers as they know what they're agreeing to but don't enforce it on customers that have been using the app for years and lock their recipes. Poor experience and will be going elsewhere if this isn't resolved..Version: 3.1.6

Years of using the app, not anymoreI got this app about 2013. It was completely free. I’ve had it and used it with over 500 recipes for many years. Their support was slow at getting back but they were friendly and it got the job done with no hassle. I got an email in February 2020 that they will be charging a subscription to “meet customer demands” and I need to make a decision in 14 days. I’m sorry. But the app, regardless the lack of update for a long time, worked perfectly fine for me. I liked being able to toggle from computer to phone to use it. Its a simple design and easy for anyone to use. I emailed them asking about this thinking it was spam mail and sure enough they told me the same thing. They also said that when I decide to subscribe, with their monthly fee of course, I will have access to my recipes again OR I can download (export) them to avoid the fee, but basically the app won’t work for me anymore unless I pay. Today, marks a sad day for me, because I decided to close my account once receiving confirmation. I used this app almost every single day; it was my virtual recipe box for all my favorite recipes and has always been my first reinstall on new phones throughout the years. Hopefully in the future there will be a free use version again for those who don’t really care about the extra options or upgrades that are being promised with a monthly subscription fee..Version: 2.8

These guys are in breach of data laws!Like a number of reviewers, I was a loyal user of this app for many years. Suddenly they send a notice (that ended up in my junk mail) saying subscribe or click ‘export recipe data’. The trouble is you can’t do the latter because you have to log in, presumably if you didn’t do it before the end of the ‘free trial’. But older users (like me) don’t appear to have passwords so it won’t let you log in. I have written to them demanding they release information I stored on the site within 14 days. Absolutely shoddy!.Version: 3.1.3

Too much faffing aroundThis app looks very amateurish. I can't do anything in the app, I need to use the site so why not include a link to the site that logs me in automatically? The app installs with no content. This makes the app look unfinished. Why not auto-include some popular recipes when I set up my account? I'm sure it works very well but it doesn't inspire me to put in the effort to set it up properly..Version: 2.3

Shame on youShame on you. I guess you couldn’t get new purchases of your app and weren’t making anymore money, so you decide to gouge me? I don’t think so!! I’m out. I’ll go check out Paprika.Version: 2.8

I love this app but the crashes...I love this app but the crashes are really starting to get on my nerves. When I use the Cook Now function on iPad, every so often the app crashes. This is usually when I have a timer going and then the timer is gone so I don't know how long my cake/muffins/whatever have been in the oven. This is a major inconvenience..Version: 2.5

Needs workThe desktop version of this has a lovely planner broken up into breakfast lunch and dinner in a vertical calendar format. However the mobile version does not. I like to be able to see today's and tomorrow's menu at a glance as often I've factored in leftovers for the next days meal. No good realising that you needed to roast extra veg for soup the day after roasting it. All you need to do is make the two the same. Also would prefer to set there default page to be the planner page. The desktop page is dreadful, first you have to 'show app commands' then select planner. Please just gives us a sidebar menu!.Version: 2.8

PepperplateI have used this app for years for free and loved it, however, now I have to pay if I want to continue using this app? Can someone please explain. I can understand if you’re a new user but to charge a previous free user is just wrong. One Star because of the inconvenience that I now have to move all my recipes 4 stars because the app is awesome Not happy.Version: 3.1.7

Buggy app was ok when free, but now they’re trying to charge a subscription AVOID!Have used this for a while as a free recipe management app. It’s always been a bit buggy, but just about worth putting up with while it was free as it also provides a web interface. However they have just tried to sneak in a subscription model, presumably in the hope that its not noticed by existing users... as there is no way anyone in their right mind would pay an annual fee to use this half baked app. I’d recommend existing users download their recipes off of this ASAP, as pepperplate will hold your data ransom unless you sign up to their subscription charge in the next 14 days! These guys are a real piece of work. AVOID!.Version: 2.8

All of a sudden monthly charge? This app was free for years, so I used it to store a lot of recipes that I’ve collected - some of them my own! Now I can’t access the recipes because without any forewarning, they now want to charge $5 per month. That’s $60 a year for what? Storing your own cooking notes? Like previous reviewer, i would have paid a yearly subscription of around $10, but $60 is ludicrous for an app that offers basic features..Version: 3.1.6

You’ve just lost a customerAbsolute disgrace, after being a loyal customer for many many years, I suddenly discover that I can’t access my data without paying £2.99 per month! So I’ve had no choice but to subscribe for one month, retrieve my data and I have now cancelled my subscription and deleted the app from my iPhone and iPad. You should be bl**dy ashamed of yourselves, there is no advanced functionality in the app to support a monthly subscription of that price & I think you’ll find many other customers will now be walking away. To give no advanced warning is an appalling business model, you money grabbing b*st*rds!.Version: 3.1.3

Long time user loses patienceI have waited for a couple of years for improvements to appear, ie. imports from major sites to work again; all the dates to show up on the planner, etc. to no avail, and now I have to subscribe to use my own recipes? I am investigating other apps... sorry. It’s not going to work for me..Version: 2.8

Potentially FantasticVery nice app, has potential to be fantastic and deserving of 5 stars with some alterations. Some immediate changes for me are the need to alter the shopping list groups. Having access to the groups would also make it easier to add other non recipe items to the shopping list as currently you have to assign category groups to items. It would be nicer to add recipes to the planner by being able to see all the recipes rather than entering them by text search. When you add text to the planner you then can't delete it which is frustrating. The UI for adding recipes is perfect, love the ability to import recipes via URL. Hope this feedback will be considered in any further updates..Version: 2.7

Meh... Get another applicationI saw a review of this on an App Show podcast. I created a Pepperplate online account. The online account did an OK job of acquiring recipes from other sources although the process is on a single recipe by recipe basis. All along I hesitated buying the application because of the cost of the application. I was excited about the multiple timers, and the "text items to the schedule". I don't know about the developers of this application, but the reason I own an iPad is to allow me to disconnect from the computer. What's wrong and missing from the application? 1. You cannot ADD a recipe in the application. 2. You cannot start a timer unless you start cooking a recipe from your online Pepperplate web application. 3. You can ONLY add the text item to your Pepperplate calendar from the Pepperplate website. 4. You cannot add notes to your recipes from the iPad. So... you are making a dinner with recipes from other sources. This application REQUIRES that you enter them on Pepperplate first. So before you cook that seven course gourmet meal, you'll spend five hours entering all the recipes into the WEB site before this application will do squat for you. I'd like my money back. While I do feel there are VERY serious deficiencies in the application, I want to also commend the support team. They are very helpful, and supportive. I noticed this mentioned in other reviews and I wanted to make sure to note it here as well..Version: 1.2

Very disappointedI’ve been using the app for years and not a single new feature. Now they want to change to a subscription model.... no changes in the years I’ve been using it.... likely never gonna have new features. Was great for a free app, or I’d even have paid a one time fee of 8$.... but not 4$ a month.... you’ve lost sooooo many customers.... I see many people are recommending paprika..Version: 3.1.3

Crashes when launchedUsed to work, but the last 2 version crashes the app upon launch..Version: 2.7

Greedy Thieves!Used this app for years it was free! I had my own personal recipes saved on the site thats all I used it for nothing else and they locked me out from them until I paid $3.99. They are thieves do not download this app at all! Greedy!!!!!!!.Version: 3.1.6

Needs more supportDoes the work of three apps between recipe book, shopping list, and conversions. But really needs updates to keep up, style is outdated, features are inconsistent across platforms and lacks alexa/google home integration which leaves it far behind the competition. Definitely needs some love..Version: 2.8

DisappointingWorks well as a basic app but certainly has a number of bugs. It seems rather odd that the developer is now claiming they need to charge a subscription fee in order to continue to update as per user requirements when the app has not been updated for a considerable length of time. Neither option available to export data actually works and the developer will not respond to any request for support with the existing bugs. So it appears that existing users will lose all of their pre-existing data if they don’t agree to pay!.Version: 2.8

DotpryorWas really happy with this app, the recipes looked really great, despite the limited websites that will load directly to it. I spent all day transferring all my recipes to it....now it just crashes all the time and wont stay open. What a waste of a day... Disappointed!.Version: 2.3

Good & awefulUsing this as a grocery list is very helpful on one hand (it has good organized categories) but on the other hand my complaint is that if I want to put 2 items with the same ingredient in the name, it automatically combines the 2. (ex: string cheese & American sliced cheese - app combines them as "cheese" and you can't see what kind of cheese you need to buy). Major flaw!! For someone with ADHD, by the time I get to the grocery store, I've already forgotten what kind of cheese I want, so I would want this app to tell me, not leaving me guessing as I stand in the deli isle. So it ends up wasting my time instead of saving my time. For this reason I've gone back to the old fashion way of simply writing it down on a real list so that when I want to buy Graham Crackers and Entertainment crackers, not just "crackers", I can accomplish this without wasting my time trying to remember the type of cracker I need..Version: 2.7

Can I export recipes? Is there any way to export my recipes before the app becomes pay-for-use? I have been using this app - quite happily - since it was introduced, so I have accumulated quite a collection..Version: 2.8

Can’t use due to technical issuesI used Pepperplate when it was free and got enough value from it to switch to a paid subscription. Problem is that the app has trouble recognizing that I have a subscription and I can’t even log on to the website. I am not going to pay for something that I can’t use consistently. Support does respond but it is time consuming to go through all their troubleshooting when it is really a problem on their end that I as the customer should not have to deal with. The app worked for a short time but now it isn’t working again. It is a good product but they need to figure out all their technical issues..Version: 3.1.5

Good but very glitchyDoesn't work on ios9 even on reinstall, but I assume that will be fixed. Exporting recipes requires recipient to open an account, which makes sharing recipes a total hassle. App interface regularly crashes, photos disappear, etc. You need to save what you are writing regularly as phone locking loses progress. Should be quick filters dinner/desert/etc, or folders for recipes, rather than just a chronological list which is cumbersome. I have had one recipe duplicated in outputs, required deleting/rewriting the recipe. So many clear coding glitches, despite app being of use..Version: 2.7

Free advice to PepperplateSince you went to a paid model and started your update program in May, every single review has been negative. I now see your rating has been recently reset to blank, no doubt because it has been so poor ... one star is the lowest you can go or it would probably be zero My free advice is find a way to communicate with your (now paying) customers. We don’t know what’s going on, you don’t reply to our communications and you give no real indication of when things will be fixed..Version: 3.1.5

Not happyI have been an avid Pepperplate user for many years. While I was dismayed to now be charged a subscription fee I signed up willingly as I have converted most of my favourite recipes (in the hundreds) to this app. Now that I’m paying, the app doesn’t work, each time the app synchronizes it duplicates my most recently added recipe (current count is 15 copies of the same recipe) and when I click on <help> it kicks me out of the app entirely. What gives? Fix the app or give me my money back..Version: 2.8

Sign in glitch.I downloaded this app onto my iPad and it is a great way to store all your recipes in the one place, easily worth a FIVE STAR rating. However I have tried deleting and re downloading the app several times and it will still not let me sign in on my iPhone via Facebook or e mail. I have checked settings several times and pepper plate is switched on under Facebook. Please fix so I can change my review..Version: 2.7

Money-making scammers! Was a great little tool to store your recipes, but latest updates now want to charge £2.99 a month for this privilege : - no warning either! Would’ve paid a one-off fee as have been adding recipes in it for years but not subscribing to something we do ourselves! It seems coronavirus has brought out the best in some people 😩.Version: 3.1.2

Adios, au revolt, good byeThis is a good app but not good enough to pay $3/month for so good bye..Version: 2.8

Way too expensive for nothing in return$2.99/month to access my own recipes while they don’t even do any upkeep is highway robbery. Don’t be fooled, there are plenty of cheaper and even free options as good as or better than Pepperplate ever was..Version: 3.2.0

DO THE RIGHT THING!!You created a free app and secured many loyal users that spoke highly of the app and recommended it to friends and family. Then you decided you needed funds to upgrade the app and add “improvements”, so you advised users that they would have 14 days to extract their information in an non-useful format or pay $3/month to access their recipes in perpetuity. Many people, like myself, expressed that we would be willing to pay a one-time fee to support your business, but $3/month is steep to access our own input. Clearly you weren’t deserving of the loyalty. DO THE RIGHT THING and charge a one-time fee and allow people to continue to use a basic app or reactivate all the accounts for another 14 days and provide a method for people to export their recipes in a useable format to move them to a single payment app! Your rating in the App Store has tanked. People are sending you a message and perhaps you should listen..Version: 2.8

Holding my recipes hostage! After seven years of using this app and building my family recipes, it suddenly switched to paid membership use and locked away my recipes without warning! I received no email of any kind alerting me to the change. What a horribly disrespectful ambush! Apps should not be allowed to do this when you already have them on your phone. You should at least be given a grace period to retrieve your material, or use a free version with ads. That’s what a respectful company would do! Instead, they found a great way to bilk everyone out of their hard-earned money: lock them out and frustrate them so that they are forced to pay to retrieve their years of work! I had family recipes in here that were passed on to me by people who are now deceased. Even that is not enough to make me give them a single solitary penny for their shady behavior. I would rather track down remaining family members and start over somewhere else. I spent nearly a decade singing the praises of this app, recommending it to it to everyone I know. Well, no more. Who in their right mind is going to pay money to access recipes that they could save elsewhere for free? Or better yet… Google what you want to make. I’ve dealt with apps that went subscription before. At least they had a shred of decency and warned their clients beforehand..Version: 3.1.6

Long time customer, looking for new appCharging users?? for an app that’s hardly maintained, all the import features are broken from the popular recipe sites, and very limited sharing features that live in the 90s... no thanks!! The company acts like there’s no competition out there and are greedy enough to believe people would be ready to pay 3$/mo for a service that’s outdated. Being a long time user of this app, I would have much preferred paying a one-time fee or even bare seeing some banner ads on the screen if the company was looking to get some form of revenue from us....Version: 2.8

UnreliableI’ve been using this app for several years to store my recipes. I thought it would help me have quick easy access without having to take up space with cookbooks and a recipe box in the kitchen. Every time I would go to access it, I would be logged out. Sharing my recipes with others isn’t simple as it just generates a link. The other day when I got on to make dinner, the “log in with Facebook” button was no longer there. Through the app store I was able to find a web link which still had the log in with Facebook option. When I clicked it, it came up with a message that they were doing away with this option and moving to a more secure way with email being linked. Not really worried about the security of my recipes but okay. Go through setting all that up. Immediately get an email that I have a 14 day free trial to the app. So apparently they’re not moving to monthly subscription after years of being free. Fine I’ll take my recipes and go. Only when you click to print recipes or share again all you get is a link. So I spent my whole day writing out my recipes. It’s not even a great app to begin with so no idea why they think people will pay for it. I highly suggest using something else..Version: 3.1.3

Disgusting Business - Ransom ChargeDo not under any circumstances download the app. Without warning they want $3.99 A MONTH to access your recipes. A TOTAL RIPOFF!.Version: 3.1.3
