Rosetta Stone: Learn Languages for Negative User Reviews

Buggy flash cardsThis is really not worth spending any money on. The whole thing is flash cards, and frequently the text you are meant to match the card to is too vague to really make much sense or identical to two cards but matches only to one so you just have to guess. It is also full of bugs causing you to have to restart the app frequently..Version: 8.28.1

Review related to the app not the language being learntThis review is related to the app itself. Update I have no idea what the developers have done but the app is now worse than before. Lots of the pages that are listen only do not play. Your only option is to skip the page. Guess what happens when you skip a page. You fail the lesson. If you download lessons to use offline, you can never get back online again with the app. Only solution from CS is to delete the app and try again. Do that and you lose ALL your progress. Based on this app alone use another app to learn your language. You will give up in frustration with the Rosetta Stone app Original review Rosetta Stone recently introduced a hints within the app. Telling you to click on the correct image or click the correct phrase. You can work this out within 5 minutes of using the application. However you CANNOT switch this feature off. Every slide you are presented with starts with these "helpful" hints which then take several taps to get rid off and in some instances trying to get rid of the hints makes you register an incorrect answer. Until they get rid of this feature, or put in an option to disable these hints avoid..Version: 5.6

Speech recognition is GARBAGEThe app crashes and has glitches like the second line of the written material is always covered by the picture so you have to guess what the rest of the text is. These things are not the end of the world. What is a big ongoing problem is the piss poor speech recognition. It has been poor quality for years now. It really is about 50% accurate at best. Shout, speak loud, whisper, talk slow, whatever it will fail to recognize that anything was said. This is a significant problem for a program intended to teach language. It feels like I have a teacher who has hearing aids with dead batteries. This is extremely frustrating which doesn’t help with motivation either. You people should fix that tomorrow morning. Seriously, It really should be a top priority to fix this. Also if you are trying to learn over a long run, be careful because this company will cancel lifetime subscriptions without refund, notice or cause. My work recommended this app but I’m wishing I tried any of the other programs that do the exact same thing..Version: 8.23.0

Still roughIt definitely doesn’t feel polished, minor bugs and jarring lessons lead to an overall uncomfortable experience The app can be unresponsive and glitchy which can lead to incorrect answers given when it is not what you intended I also personally believe that the app also assumes you know a lot already despite choosing beginners It doesn’t break the sentence down and tell you what each part means, it doesn’t even tell you what the sentence means unless you go out of your way to click the buggy ‘translate’ button I believe it should just be told to you when it first shows it you and then you can check later if you want to Overall it assumes you have intermediate knowledge and the feel of the app feels close to being really good. If the bugs are pressed out it will be very good , it definitely has all it needs there it just needs refining which I can see they are making an effort with , with regular updates..Version: 8.10.0

BRUHFor some reason I cannot delete this app this app sucks won’t even recognize my voice like I’m a native Korean and it says incorrect when I say whatever their saying voice recognition is BROKEN.Version: 8.29.0

Decent app. Terrible pricing structure. It seems the app is pretty good but the pricing is all over. They don’t want you paying monthly obviously in case you give up. On top of that paying quarterly or twice a year drives the price to absurd levels. If you want to maybe go back and rerun a more advanced level if you’ve not used it in a while you’ll have to have paid twice the price for lifetime access. Overall while I have no problem paying for good software the nature of a missing real subscription or lifetime access for a reasonable fee will Prevent me from buying into this app. It’s just o Roth £200 for me for lifetime access and I won’t pay £120 for a year in case I need to go back. There are plenty of options these days for language learning. Many Apps. Books. Audio help. Rosetta Stone is trying to figure out how to maximise profit and in the end I think they’re missing the current trends and alienating a large part of their audience. For example if five people use it for 3 months each and then cancel it’s the same or better than one buying a year. And you’re not converting all five to a year so just choose what gets you the most exposure. Seems basic but they’ve clearly missed the memo. TL;DR Rosetta Stone has no monthly subscription and alienates their potential audience with high pricing increased drastically with multiple billing and the very necessary lifetime access. They’re Clinton to a model from decades ago when they were the only real game in town..Version: 6.2.0

Wants me to purchase what I’ve already paid for...I purchased the program for my PC (all 5 levels) and figured I would be able to access the content I paid for through the app. I was wrong. I still sign in with all the same information (user name, email, password, everything) but it doesn’t allow me to continue on with lessons I’VE ALREADY PAID FOR. I don’t understand why the app and the PC program don’t work together. They easily could and should. On my phone and iPad I’m using Duolingo as a way to keep the language fresh as I don’t always have time to login on a PC. I would love to use Rosetta Stone while I have some downtime during the day, but I’m not going to haul my computer around in order to do that. It just doesn’t make sense. The app and attitude of this company are very disappointing. It’s also disheartening to see that their response to poor reviews isn’t to actually give answers, but to ask people to go to there website and make a statement. When customer has already expressed their concern in the review, it pretty ridiculous to ask them to do the same thing in a different location. It’s just another example of them ignoring the problem..Version: 6.2.1

App is a little frustrating & confusing layoutI enjoy the app, but it has an odd setup. I want to redo some of my old lesson plans on the Home tab, but see no option to do so. I’ve been out of the app for a bit, so wanted to redo the older lessons as a refresher but when I click on it, it only shows my previous score. It also says I’m on week 3 but then in the plan overview, it says only week 1 is completed. Perhaps I can redo on the Learn tab, but locating the lessons I did on the Home tab is impossible. It doesn’t line up at all, so I have no idea where to find the specific lesson I wanted to redo. Also, the pronunciation /story read back parts are the most frustrating. I love reading and hearing the stories in German. It is a nice idea, but most times the speech recognition doesn’t work properly. I’m clearing saying the words correctly, but it keeps marking it as wrong. I’m not sure why. It’ll say it’s wrong, then I will say it the same way and it’s right. Often times it doesn’t seem to pick up that I said anything, so I’ll have to say it twice. Sometimes I find myself shouting at my phone in frustration having to repeat myself 5 times for it to register. Just now I disabled the microphone at this section, because it was just too offputting. It also crashes & signs you out a lot if you go outside the app for a translation (since they don’t offer it in the app) I purchased the lifetime membership, so if these issues get fixed I will come back and update my rating..Version: 8.21.0

Broken exercises, very frustratingThe sequence of learning is not great for me. I think you need the alphabet before you see it written, and there is no explanation of vowels. But the really frustrating thing is “broken” exercises. The first grammar exercise flips through five or six pages without allowing a response and then tells you that you cannot proceed because you have got them wrong. After multiple tries I got to the second alphabet exercise, And the “ye” from the “yelda” kept changing to another letter when I selected it so every answer was wrong. For $139 I expect at least a help function, but there seems to be no way of communicating with Rosetta Stone. Very disappointing for a company with this reputation..Version: 5.15.2

APP is horribly madeThis app is horrible and it has a bug that’s been there for months: If you are not subscribed to Rosetta Live, then the app gets out of sync. If you open a course i will open a different one, one more advance. Which means YOU WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO OPEN EITHER THE FIRST OR LAST COURSES. After several months going back and forth with customer service, sending them even videos of the problem they have proven themselves to be absolutely USELESS. So i had to find the solution myself: This bug is only present when the iPhone is in portrait mode. So in order to open the first or last courses just place your iPhone horizontally and the bug will not happen. DEVELOPERS DONT USE MY SOLUTION UNLESS YOU PAY ME. YOU ARE USELESS FIXING BUGS SO DONT USE ME TO SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS AFTER THE WAY YOU HAVE TREATED ME..Version: 8.30.0

Not detecting audio input reliablySo glad I was able to do a free trial before committing to spending any money. Whilst the content and method of instruction in Rosetta Stone is excellent, the app can’t handle audio input properly, meaning spoken exercises are a complete waste of time. I’ve done everything to make it work, including removing the case. Sometimes I have to shout for it to detect I’m even speaking. It sometimes pops up a message stating there’s an issue with my microphone quality. I’ve tested voice memos which sound perfectly clear. And I’m using Babbel for language learning on a daily basis. It has no problem detecting audio input whether I’m using my iPhone on-device microphone or AirPods. For the price of Rosetta Stone this problem is unacceptable. I won’t be going ahead with a paid subscription..Version: 8.26.0

Good program but App needs workThe content itself is great and the learning concept is simple but effective. It also moves fairly fast so you aren’t stuck doing the same easy stuff over and over for hours like a lot of other programs. The website version is great but the app needs some work. When it tries to fit too many choices on screen it will glitch out horribly, and make the images the size of a pinprick so its impossible to choose the correct option since you rely on the images to choose the correct answer most of the time. Or it will mess up the words so that you have to scroll around just to read one short sentence. The microphone on the mobile version can be very frustrating as well. I recommend this program, if you’ve got the money that is. it’s very expensive. Honestly I find the free version of Duolingo to be pretty similar..Version: 8.21.0

Great Website, Terrible AppWhile I love Rosetta Stone, using it on my phone is so much worse that my computer. The microphone doesn’t seem to pick up half the words I say even though there is no issue with my phone, it is very hard to select a different lesson or review mistakes on a lesson you just took. Also particular sentences like ‘I have a blue bicycle’, on the computer will have a speech bubble yo show you who is talking but this doesn’t exist when I’ve used the app, meaning you very often have to 50/50 guess as to whether “he has a blue bicycle” or “I have a blue bicycle”. I’ve also has issues with continuing from where I left off when swapping from computer to phone. It looks great but it doesn’t have the same functionality. Really hope they fix it..Version: 8.23.0

Please work with a UX designer. This is probably the app with the worst interface I've ever seen..Version: 8.27.0

Broken App - Stay AwayIf you would like to use and pay for Rosetta Stone, I definitely do not recommend the app as you’d be paying not just money, but with wasted time. The web browser version of Rosetta Stone is really the best way to truly use it, as the app barely works properly. You’ll end up having spent more time dealing with headaches than learning language lessons..Version: 8.21.0

No translation makes this ap uselessNo translation provided for many languages (mandarin) leaving you to guess the context of the phrases from photos. That makes the app practically useless. Purchased a subscription and provided no method to be reimbursed. Online Help then claim I should have checked the website. Absolute theft given this is not disclosed in the App Store..Version: 5.9.1

Has potential but surprisingly buggyI tho k the app has potential. It’s maybe not the most effective way to learn a language and the lessons move quite slowly in terms of actual practical vocabulary, but when it works it’s fun and convenient which offsets that. The big problem is the number of bugs in the app. Frequently there are network error pop ups despite there being no network problems. These kick you out of your current exercise and it becomes a race to see if you can complete it before the pop up voids you’re progress. Similarly if you go out of an exercise and press continue, it can warn you that it will reset the progress (despite there being a separate button for that). Super frustrating. Also the voice recognition sometimes simply doesn’t work either complaining about problems with the microphone or responding differently to the same pronunciation. If the pronunciation is genuinely wrong, then there’s no hint at which part you’re getting wrong...sometimes I’ve stumbled through a sentence, massacring it entirely and got a pass. Sometimes got stuck on a single syllable which then worked fine in the next example. I want to persevere with it, but for the price tag on the course I expected UX of a higher quality..Version: 7.6

Don’t buy it- TOTAL SCAMI bought the lifetime access ($200) through the App Store and after a few months the app stopped recognizing my login. Ok, fine. But no amount of trying to reset it worked and the website didn’t recognize my account either. After numerous emails and conversations with Apple and Rosetta Stone, they could no longer find my account- it apparently disappeared! And since it disappeared after the refund date, they would not refund my money even though I had the paperwork/receipts that proved I bought the app and lifetime access even though they could not find it. So basically, they lost the account but refused to give me my money back and they can’t figure out why it no longer exists. I have continued to try and work with Rosetta Stone but they have not resolved the issue nor just create a new lifetime access for me. It has been MONTHS of trying to get this fixed or get my money back. And now their customer service is no longer responding to my emails when I ask for an update as they try to “troubleshoot” the problem (been over a month since the last request for an update has been ignored). At this point I feel scammed out of my $200 and am disgusted with Rosetta’s “customer service”. I’ve switched to using Duolingo and find it works just as well and is free with ads or you can upgrade to one without..Version: 8.3.0

Keeps crashingI am enjoying the learning method. But it keeps crashing. Try to open the app and getting a black screen. So I have to delete and reload. What a pain..Version: 5.15.4

Good but sometimes frustratingI first bought Rosetta Stone for my computer several years ago. I didn’t use it a lot because I couldn’t get the microphone to work. Without practicing pronunciation I didn’t see the point in trying to learn a language. I kept saying I’d get to it later and eventually forgot about it. I got an email with a great deal to upgrade to the lifetime subscription for all languages. The price is awesome for what you get, but I do get frustrated with it sometimes. There are times when I know I butchered the pronunciation but it says I did it good, and then times when I thought I said it really good and it says I didn’t. Learning proper grammar at the beginning of learning the language is not going well for me. (English to Spanish) I don’t always understand why a word is said one way or another. Sometimes even the male vs female form of a word confuses me. I wish there was a button to mark a screen when I’m not sure about something. I feel like I’m not fully learning it and it would be nice to be able to easily go back and check on the things I was unsure of. I feel like so far I can listen to and read what I’ve learned but not speak it. I hadn’t used the app in a few days and the next step for me was the third milestone. I did terribly. The milestones are strange for me too. Most of the time I stare at the screen with no idea what it wants me to say..Version: 8.8.0

Great program, needs tweaksI love that this app uses pictures to help you learn. I find it a lot easier to learn the basics when I can see what the word means. But once you get into the Harder lessons it becomes a pass fail game. They need to make some kind of a system that notices when you consistently get something wrong and suggest re doing once of the lessons to help you understand that part better. Also $30 per month is very expensive for something you may not use every day and the auto renew meant that it was taking my money long after I stopped using the app. Not impressed!.Version: 5.12

It’s okay…I’m only partially-fluent in Hindi, but I can understand it fully. I got this app just to brush up, and on the very first speaking exercise I was disappointed. It told me to say “the girl is eating” in Hindi, and I said it perfectly, but it marked me wrong two times before it understood me. I doubt stock images and poor voice recognition will get you far….though it might be better for European languages - it’s just not what I need. If you want to take learning a news language seriously I would definitely recommend getting a textbook or watching videos and taking notes. Apps like this can be fun and motivating, but you shouldn’t rely on them entirely. If you desperately wanted a language app, I’d recommend using duolingo for character sets, basic vocab and motvation..Version: 8.21.0

Worst learning systemI’ve learned Chinese with Berlitz and Spanish with Pimsleur programs. In the time it took to learn with those programs, I’d say I learned about 1/4 as much with Rosetta Stone. Their flawed system has absolutely NO DEFINITIONS to the pictures they show you, so you don’t know if the foreign word means sugar, salt, or the color white. Their customer service is useless and is also incapable of answering questions regarding the flawed teaching program. Basically you are paying for a guessing game, not a teaching system. I tried it for 6 months and was extremely disappointed in how useless it was in helping me learn a new language compared to previous programs. I learned less with Rosetta Stone than any other language program. Response to Rosetta Stone’s generic, cut and paste response: “pedagogical”??? Why don’t you just say ”teaching”? That’s all the word means is “teaching”. And “Dynamic Immersion” means A technique used in bilingual language education in which TWO languages are used for instruction. Thus, if you don’t know the word in one language, then the definition should be present in the other language. ROSETTA STONE DOES NOT OFFER THE DEFINITIONS IN THE OTHER LANGUAGE. I called your India based “support” countless times for help on this. Their favorite response is”I am sorry we can not help you” So please stop lying to people about your “pedagogical dynamic immersion” techniques, THEY DO NOE WORK..Version: 6.2.1

Can’t recommendTried for about 10 minutes, and wasn’t able to select images on the app, making it impossible to use..Version: 8.28.1

A little slowThe app is definitely better than using A web browser on my (very good) laptop, but it can still get a little frustrating- things just aren’t as smooth as we’ve come to expect these days. It takes a while to register things sometimes; it doesn’t respond immediately to changing the settings or resetting a lesson (tap ‘reset’ and it will still display your previous score, so how do you know it registered?); also when repeating things for voice input you have to wait for the beep which is very frustrating and really counterintuitive - in a classroom you parrot back what the teacher says: “un gato”, “un gato”. Not “un gato”, wait, beep, “un gato”: it really ruins the beat..Version: 5.15.1

UselessVery slow, crashes all the time. Loading takes ages...Version: 2.2.2

Good app, but microphone technical issuesI’ve enjoyed using the Rosetta Stone language app to learn Vietnamese. The content for the learning programmes has been good. My biggest issue with the app at the moment is the app not detecting the microphone in my Apple Airpods when I have the AirPods connected to my iPad. Other apps on my iPad (eg. voice memo) seem to be able to use the Airpod’s microphone well. If the developers could fix this issue this would make the app even better!.Version: 5.9.1

Worth itYep it'd agree. I like it a lot more than the Rosetta Stone PC version I started on. It's also cheaper but you need a wifi connection. The only issue I've had is i couldn't get it to unlock the milestone for completing level one even after passing all the lessons. Also when I contacted tech support I was told, after trying to explain it to an Indian for 30 min, that "it was a known problem and we are working on it" yeah right..Version: 1.5.4

Ok but glitchyI just started using this app to try it out. Using the free version right now. I’m in my first lesson and everything was going fine then sudden on section 3 the app stopped hearing my voice. It would hear one word but not the other. Nothing I did helped. I tried to get in the queue to speak to someone and was 1 in like for about 20mins and never spoke to anyone. I tried reconfiguring my mic, reducing the speech to easy, getting closer to the mic, talking louder, and nothing worked at all. I’ve reset the app, made sure it was updated, made sure my phone was updated, and tested my mic on voice to text in a text message and the mic works just fine picking up my voice. It’s ONLY in this app. Secondly, the app will automatically rotate screen anytime you are typing or in a lesson. It’s extremely hard to type with the screen rotated. I also found the use of the navigations in the lesson clumsy and difficult to use. I couldn’t go back to a word in a lesson. I had to exit and start again. Biggest issue if the app not picking up my voice at all. These two things really make it difficult to use the app and I really don’t want to pay for this if it’s that glitchy. I know I can go without repeating the phrases but the point of making sure I’m saying the phrases correctly is pointless if the app will not pick up my voice..Version: 8.13.0

Used to like thisHi I used to think this is very good to learn and yes over the years I paid over 200£ for this.. but now I barely turn the app on and every time i do I get really upset. Your speech recognition is beyond horrible, doesn’t work, it’s slow and actually sometimes you can say it Multiple times loud or silent, slowly or fast, man or girlish voice, at any setting sometimes nothing works! I started using every day Duolingo(£free!), learning faster, with proper vocabulary and grammar too, all this is by the way missing in Rosetta Stone ! Perhaps you should ask them how to program your app better.. sorry really unhappy .. every few weeks I turn it on again and give it another chance, because spent so much and although it seems more and more pretty and complicated, it is lot really but even worse for me unusable right now and no sorry my device doesn’t have a problem.. FIX IT!!.Version: 7.0

Content is good, App and Website not so much.Good for learning, but the app and website are pretty unstable when it comes to tracking of what you are saying. Sometimes you have to do the exercise several times before it recognises what you’ve done as correct (even if there is no difference from what you just said). It can get irritating and after a while I’ll stop using this website/app and use another one, cause it just gets too frustrating. Learning is hard enough, no need for this learning tool to make it even harder..Version: 5.3

Worst everI don’t know why this app has such great reviews. I’m trying to learn Hebrew and it’s the most difficult and least user friendly app out there. It hasn’t taught me to read the language and yet, it shows the words in Hebrew above the pictures so I can’t practice my pronunciation visually. Additionally, due to the lack of American translation, this throws me into sentences of which I have no idea what I’m saying and I have to figure it out based on the pictures?? Absolutely absurd as I spent three days thinking I learned to say something but when I asked my husband what The app was saying, it was a different sentence than what I had thought. I unfortunately paid 2 years worth and hope no one gets trapped into buying this as well. The first trial is easy so it makes it fun and integrative but in actuality there doesn’t seem to be a rhyme or reason for the progression of the lessons and it won’t tell you what exactly it’s trying to teach you like plurals or colors - you figure it out as you do the lessons. Also this app is only integrative and doesn’t give other options as auditory which would a nice option to have it I’m driving or running and I can just listen along. It’s a god awful app and I wish I could get my money back..Version: 5.15.5

Log into AppThis app doesn’t allow you to change your password or access the account. You put in your email address and the app will allow you to change your password but the app won’t recognize your password.Version: 6.2.0

Glitchy app, decent programRosetta Stone is way better on the computer, the app doesn’t do it justice. This app isn’t bad- I wish that they had a portion of the Greek class go over the alphabet, because if I didn’t already know most of how it sounds then I would be kind of lost. But I guess that’s part of the immersion, so it’s not a totally bad thing —but the main thing that’s frustrating is the audio clips, as they tend to glitch out for me. So for the questions where they speak a phrase, almost every single time I can only hear a portion or a word of the phrase. Other times, I hear like a syllable. A weird noise and then that’s it. I’m not sure if this is only for Greek or not, I haven’t tried the other courses yet. This is why not having the alphabet part can be frustrating, because if I forget how a letter is pronounced, the audio clips can’t help. The app is also pretty slow. There are long delays between selecting an answer and having it register, and it’s crashed several times. I’m not too impressed with it. Overall, despite these bugs it’s not terrible. The lessons themselves are decent I guess- but even though the program is great on the computer, for an app you’re way better off with something like Duolingo, which is free and wayyy less buggy..Version: 5.6

Too much focus on people you don’t know. Most of us learn a new language to speak to someone new, and yet in almost every speaking exercise offered in this curriculum they have you practicing “usted” where you’re speaking to total strangers or about someone else. The focus should be primarily on conversations between me (yo) and you (tu), because these are the types of real-life conversations that matter. Sadly it doesn’t seem like they’ve updated their curriculum in a decade. Language has also changed in that time and several words they teach you are not ever used in the majority of Latin America... like “anteojos”... no one says that, they say “lentes” or “gafas”, but the software fails to teach you these alternate words that are more commonly used. Ultimately it’s one of the best tools out there for learning on your own but needs significant improvement and custom-tailored options so we are learning more of what we will actually be using and less of all the informal talk with random strangers in a completely formal manner. I don’t need to say “usted” every time I address someone. That’s exactly what conjugations are for - they imply exactly who you’re talking to or about and their gender....Version: 7.11.0

Buggy, buggy, buggyThis app constantly has weird bugs. Now the speech recognition isn’t working on my iPhone but works fine on my iPad. The iPad version also has an issue where it rotates the UI upside down. Just weird bugs by bad developers! Previous: The images are super tiny on my screen, like the layout code is messed up. I’ve reported this bug and they acknowledge they’re aware of it, but have not fixed it at all. You’re required to makes way too many choices, and they’re not even sequential before you even get into each learning section. I don’t know which one to choose. The Mac app is way simpler and it just gets you into learning much faster. The iOS UI is really poorly designed and it’s way too complicated. I don’t know what to choose or pick first. For this price, I can't have multiple learners? If I buy the Mac app, I can have multiple learners. If my wife and I both want to learn Chinese, we BOTH have to pay $279 for the Chinese? What the? This is according to Rosetta Stone tech support. I want my wife to be able track her progress, etc and for $279, I should get at LEAST one more person who uses the same devices as me to be able to learn. Nevermind my children..Version: 8.22.0

Great overall but the app is janky!I *try* to use the app often, but it has difficulty hearing my audio for the spoken word portions and recently there has been inconsistencies with the answers. I know the desktop version is optimized but I like using this on my iPad so I can practise anywhere. It’s not like the program is cheap. They need to focus on improving all offerings or don’t bother having them at all..Version: 8.24.0

Good but has issues for the price…I like pretty much most of what this app does… but I do have intermittent issues with the sound recognition on my iPad.. which doesn’t happen with any of my other language apps (just outright refuses to pick up sound about 20% of the time and steadfastly refuses to do so for a while), and I don’t think that the grammar sections dovetail well with the immersive nature of the rest of the app, and you are left to try and work out what is going on (but not in a good way). So not perfect, and a bit buggy.. but at a premium price. I’ve paid for 3 months - but likely won’t resubscribe..Version: 8.10.0

Somewhat satisfiedThe app is very easy to use and I love how it teaches you different ways to learn a language. I did not purchase anything on the app and I still learned a lot. There are two things I want to address, which I hope can be changed sooner than later. I specifically chose Mandarin as the language I wanted to learn. I understand Rosetta Stone wants us to fully immerse ourselves when learning a different language. However, I often felt as if I was learning pronunciation and phrases, but not really learning what it translates to. This would definitely help me use the language outside of the app and give me more confidence if I knew the exact English translation to ensure I’m using the term/sentence correctly during a conversation. Another thing that was addressed in the FAQs but still had problems with is the speech portion. I had to redo the speaking lesson a few times due to it stating I said it incorrectly and picking up words I didn’t say. For example, when I spoke into the phone to say “bao”, the app mistook it and put “guo.” It was extremely frustrating to have to redo a lesson multiple times due to the mic picking up a different sound..Version: 5.12

Just bought this worthless garbage and want my money back.I used Rosetta Stone almost 2 decades ago and was pleased with it, so I decided to buy the unlimited access to all languages. After downloading the ap and getting started with my wife’s native language I started the first lesson. The first phrase was good afternoon in Tagalog. I was confident my pronunciation was correct even though it kept indicating it wasn’t so I had my wife repeat it (once again it is her native language) and it said her pronunciation was wrong. I speak 8 languages at different fluency levels and have been exposed to Tagalog (filipino) for over 35 years, but now that I’m retired and have more time available to really become fluent in all my languages and maybe pick up 2 or 3 more, I thought this would be a good deal. I WAS WRONG! This is a piece of junk. Over a decade ago I learned 1st level Russian in about 5 weeks using Rosetta Stone and it worked better back then. I decided after looking at the first page of filipino in this ap that want my money back, but I see no way to activate that 30 day money back offer. I guess I’ll have to call my credit card company and tell them about this and see if they can stop payment for this worthless ap..Version: 8.21.0

MediocreI’m trying a range of apps and methods to help me learn Spanish. Out of all of them, Rosetta Stone was the most expensive and the least useful. The lessons are all the same format and quickly grow extremely dull and repetitive. This is partly by choice: the app aims to let you learn without ‘teaching’, so the lessons are purely visual and feature no English. It’s a good sounding idea but I found myself learning far quicker on other apps where English is used to add context and explain more complex concepts. With Rosetta stone, you just repeat the same dozen words lesson after lesson. New concepts are introduced at a glacial pace. It may work for some people, but it is not an efficient use of your time or money..Version: 8.24.0

App is Disappointing & UnusableWith the amount of money that you’re paying for this service, you’d expect that the app would be better built. It’s clunky at best, and unusable at worst. RS touts that it has a unique speech recognition service built in - but it doesn’t always work which can lead to some VERY frustrating experiences. I also dislike that though there are multiple ways to answer questions verbally in a language, RS requires you to answer it their way, or you can’t proceed in the lesson. It’s just not dynamic like they make it seem. Pair that with the other voice recognition issues, it can leave the user scratching their head on what’s causing them to fail. Is it a mic issue again? Am I not saying it the right way? Am I not saying it the RS way? SO FRUSTRATING. Other issues include the terrible user experience/UI. Why is the translation/help button so finicky, especially when I need to review words that we’re learning? Also, why are the playback buttons so small on a mobile device? There were so many times on multiple choice questions where I accidentally selected sentence instead of hitting the replay button, prompting an incorrect answer. You can definitely tell that the product was not created with a mobile-first approach. I just expected better. I suggest everyone looking into purchasing the product, and Rosetta Stone themselves, to look at feedback on Reddit / other forums to see how widespread this situation is. Unfortunate, really..Version: 8.26.0

Subscribing to this app cost me £300 more than I thoughtI joined this app on an introductory offer and found the company had later auto-renewed my subscription at a much higher rate, meaning that over a year I paid more than £320 in excess of what I thought I was paying. The company likes to send frequent subscription offers to my email address, yet when I asked repeatedly to reset my password so I could contact them to discuss my account, the password reset function mysteriously failed to work and I never received an email on this subject. I have never experienced this sort of failure before with other internet providers. Of course, this meant that I continued to pay my subscription at the higher rate. The language app itself is quite good but, such has been the expense and upset of using this company that I will never use Rosetta Stone again and would recommend that neither do you!.Version: 5.10

I own the app but it demands I buy it again!!!I already owned the app I had offloaded it to save space on my previous phone. Now it won’t let me download it even though I already paid for it before! Not only that but I paid the cyber Monday for the unlimited lessons but it keeps forcing me to the app and the app I already bought in Dec 2022 is demanding I buy it again!!!! UNACCEPTABLE! Is this just a money grab? Is this a scam? Sell you the app but demand you buy it again after you already own it? I want my lessons or my money back.what are you going to do about this Rosetta Stone?.Version: 8.28.2

App is buggy for iOSThe app itself is a great tool. I have learned a lot about the language of choice with this app however a fatal flaw in its design is how incredibly sensitive the choices are. When I click to hear what it was that was said, the interface thinks I’m selecting a choice and I lose the 100% chance for the chapter. All because I wanted to confirm what was being relayed in the lesson. So many times this has frustrated me. Recently however the app has a new problem. When I’m given a few choices but only one phrase, sometimes (and this is very frequent) it doesn’t play the audio at all. Not even when I press the button to play what was said again. So I have to select a random choice to have the app tell me I got it wrong so I can hear what the actual audio is to match it accordingly. I give this app 3/5 stars cause the app still works, it’s just these are two incredibly awful and hindering bugs that need to be fixed. Once fixed, definitely a 5 star app. A lot of learning, a lot of content, integration with Apple Watch, extra listen aloud content, it’s just an incredible resource. Even better if you’re using it online..Version: 4.4

Great concept horrid executionThe teaching on this app, I love. It's a great idea. I wish I'd went month to month at this point though rather than pay for two years. It is the buggiest app I've ever used. In fact, it's so buggy the uncommon word "hate" comes to mind. I went all the way thru module three recently and got to the last lesson. I get a pop-up that says, skipping ahead? You didn't finish all the lessons. I go back and look and sure enough, the Review lesson I'd done said I'd not done it. This particular one I knew I'd done...8 times! You see, for the Review lessons, you can't retake and fix one card, it makes you retake the entire lesson! I wanted a 100% so I retook it until I did. Guess what... It apparently lost all progress. I ended up taking it two more times, finally getting everything right. When I finished, it said I missed one anyways. What!? I have another Review that I know I'll never get right because despite voice set to easy and having taken a year in college of German from a native German, it says I cannot pronounce one word. I gave up. In some lessons I can use the wrong word entirely when I'm trying to guess the dialogue and get a 100% but in the Review, which you must fully retake if you miss something, it won't get the single word right. In short, if you are a perfectionist or have limited time to waste on bugs, this is not the app for you. There are better ones for free that won't make you cuss in front of children or want to throw your phone..Version: 5.10

Not all languages are readyI paid to learn Tagalog and it turns out that the translations (into English) are not available. So i am going through the lessons through guess work rather than actually learning the language... It is an extremely poor way of learning a language as although i am able to go through the simple stages which require a little logic and common sense, anything slightly more advanced becomes instant failure showing that i didn’t truly learn the language. I would not recommend using Rosetta Stone at all. Plus the app is really basic and glitchy at times....Version: 6.4

Doesn’t work for me.I don’t have success with this aplease don’t renew my subscription..Version: 8.29.0

App is buggyI prefer using this on the computer but the app is convenient when I’m on the go. Unfortunately - the app has a lot to be desired. The speech aspect is buggy - sometimes it registers what I say - sometimes it doesn’t and then I “get it wrong.” Then the activities aren’t formatted for an iPhone 15 - so the words/phrases for the matching images section aren’t visible so I just have to click randomly until it works. The “click on aspect to translate” doesn’t work consistently either. My other issue is conceptually. Some of the vocabulary isn’t explained/defined - and I have some background in the language (German). I find myself trying to guess the translation of the phrase. If I was trying to learn this for the first time I would be annoyed. While I understand using pictures - some pictures can’t show whole sentences - we also need the English translation of the words - particularly if they are not nouns but things like conjunctions or adverbs. For example - one of the activities had me putting in Warum or Weil (why and because) however it was never explained - I just had to guess. I remembered Warum but needed to look up Weil to make sure I was correct in my assumption as again the tap to translate wasn’t working..Version: 8.29.0

GoodThis is good but could be better. Here are some updates I think are important: *Being able to use voice recognition with Bluetooth headsets, such as AirPods. It doesn’t work right now. * right now, you cannot use it side-by-side with another app. This is a feature that needs to change. It would be great to be able to have a Notes app open as well and using the pencil to take notes while using the app. * need to be able to study with out using voice recognition. For instance, if at a coffee shop, it would be great to be able to study and complete the exercises but not have to repeat out-loud..Version: 5.13.1

Not worth the money. Can’t go back and redo lessons no translations..Version: 7.14.0

Learning lots but annoying bitsGood app and I am learning lots. Many of ways of learning are really good. However, it flicks onto the next screen if you are ready or not. If you try to pause it doesn’t work most of the time. Often I have no idea what a word means, they introduce new ones without giving the English, only a picture, and a picture of ‘do’ isn’t exactly clear. Sometimes when you tap and hold it will come up with the English translation but most of the time it doesn’t, I just spend ages tapping on things and trying to get it to go back and pause and then it doesn’t translate anyway. You never have to write anything. I will need to write stuff and it’s a good way of learning, even though you can cheat with spellcheck on your phone it’s still better than not doing it at all. I think it would also be improved if it had optional in-depth bit. I understand the need to keep it interesting but I am really struggling to understand why and when they use so many different forms of I you he she they etc in the language I am studying (German). You need google as well as the ap. I have actually started using Duolingo as well, which helps with most of these issues..Version: 6.5

I cant go to day 3I’ve been learning tagalog for 2 days, on the third day it says that I need to set a reminder for tomorrow to learn. I came back the next day and it still says that I need to set a reminder for tomorrow. I kept coming back for the next 2 MONTHS and it still isn’t working. Waste of time..Version: 8.25.0

Not ideal Arabic language!I haven’t tried it for other languages, but for Arabic, it’s definitely not a good app to learn the language. The beginner section of the app starts off right away by telling how to read words, without it even going over the alphabet and how each letter is pronounced and connected to other letters as Arabic words are connected letters. You would require to know a lot before starting on this app. Def not for beginners!.Version: 8.28.1

Software is getting better but still too many bugsThis it not price related but there are still too many bugs and missing features 1. Almost impossible to use with Bluetooth headsets. Both apple AirPods and Bose QC35 do not work. AirPods work slightly better than QC35 - as QC35 is unusable. It beeps between every audio direction change. So play audio BEEP record audio (which always fails) BEEP again. (The beep is the connect/disconnect sound - so RS constantly connect and disconnect from the headset - that should not happen) As modern iDevices discourages hard wired headphones - this issue is now more important than ever to get fixed. 2. IPAD PRO 12.9 - some screens with single picture top center and 4 squares to select - top center picture is so small it is almost impossible to see Feature request: 1. easy way to set operating mode. So for example A: select “autopilot/pocket mode” no visuals if you are walking and can’t pay attention to images B: select “no voice recognition” if you sit a place where you can’t talk without embarrassment :) (train/flight etc) 2: create Personal podcast URL’s for audio companion so one can subscribe to audio companion and RSS feed will update with your current progress / lesson level - so current relevant audio companion is always ready and available. More to come ....Version: 5.9.1

The app isn't bad. Their billing is horrible. You can download the app for free, and even do a lesson. Then it asks you to sign up for a subscription. If you wait a day or so, you get an email with a special offer of $5.99/month. Turns out though, it's not $5.99 a month, it's $147, paid all at once, which gets you a subscription for 24 months. Yes, that comes out to $5.99 a month if you don't understand finance, but it's a lot different if you don't want to pony up that much all at once. Worse, after the term is up, they'll automatically re-subscribe you at their full price, no discount. I hate this underhanded method of taking money from anyone who's not paying attention, and a bunch of people are going to pay a LOT of money for something they don't want. It's close to thievery, and it makes Rosetta Stone nearly dishonest. EDIT: After using this for a couple of weeks, I still think it's pretty good at teaching language. However, the speech module, where it listens to you and grades how well you say things, is completely useless. It doesn't understand you at all, no matter how clearly you say it, and no matter how low you set the bar. I had to turn off the Mic to be able to get through those chapters. The program complained that my Mic was bad, but it works just fine on audio notes and FaceTime, so it's not my Mic..Version: 5.4.4

Good concept but a bit boringI have been using the 6 week plan for portuguese and I do have to say that it’s good that they focus on all parts of the language and not only speaking conversations quickly. However, writing isn’t really featured and although there is a grammar section, because there aren’t any explanations, it just seems like another reading section. Also, the main issue is the exercises are so similar that it gets boring after a week and I don’t feel engaged to want to come back. Even though I see a new topic, I already know the structure. The good thing is that I am starting to speak without trying to think about the grammar structure too much. Although I may have to think about the vocabulary or the pronunciation, the structure of the sentences form in my head much easier. I would recommend if you’re dedicated and if you’re starting a language from scratch, if you have a decent understanding of the language then don’t bother. I would also recommend using another learning resource along with it..Version: 7.0

No longer helpful and still very glitchyPT. 1: Helpful but glitchy I have been using Rosetta Stone for about 2 weeks now. I bought the onetime unlimited version, and it’s great for helping me learn new languages. However, the app is very glitchy on my new iPad Pro; it seems like it’s not syncing properly. I have to refresh the app many times during one session, and occasionally when I click on a lesson that I haven’t yet looked at, the app says that I have already completed it without even giving me a score for it. I think it’s a wonderful tool to help you learn, but there are definitely some bugs that need to be fixed. PT. 2: No longer helpful and still very glitchy I just opened the app after the most recent update, and I am still having the same syncing issue. Lessons that I have completed are shown as incomplete on the plan schedule, but when I click on the lesson it opens as completed. Additionally, lessons that I have never done are showing up as completed on my “Plan Schedule” but incomplete on the overall Rosetta Stone Course. I don’t know what lesson I’m on anymore, and now it’s a hassle to try and do the lessons without a plan. I can’t learn because none of the lessons are marked correctly as completed or not completed. Overall, the latest update did not help at all..Version: 7.5

Unclear instructionsThe instructions for what to do aren’t clear at all. I often feel like I’ve been tossed in the middle of something instead of starting from the begging. Once I get the hang of it it’s not too bad but I still feel like it will be difficult to fully learn this way..Version: 8.29.0

Very frustrating app to useNow at unit 13, I have been using the app on my IPad only because it is way too small on an iPhone 8. The app is very glitchy, doesn’t load, crashes, and won’t load the offline mode. Going from the offline to online mode is a real headache and I have to load the app multiple times to make it work. Will not renew my subscription even if I am not done with the program..Version: 5.15.2

Doesn’t teach or explain anythingI’ve used a few different language apps before and the majority fall into the category of ones that don’t actually teach or explain the language. They don’t explain how verbs, adjectives etc work, they don’t explain conjugation or sentence structure. What they do is basically a matching game, match phrase to picture, match sound to phrase and so on. Rosetta lands right in the middle of this category but most apps in this category are FREE! Rosetta costs the same as some of the best language apps but offers none of the education. If you serious about learning a language get Babbel to learn and understand the language and use Duolingo to learn new words and practice recognition..Version: 8.1.0

Errr duo betterThis app is so bad omg it felt like whenever you took a lesson the next day u had to go back to day 1 Soo bad also as someone who had to use this as a family it sucked so much like you can’t have the tab open otherwise IT WILL END UR SUBSCRIPTION or smthin like that I don’t rlly remember also when it would get you to pronounce it can’t hear you that well I’ll be up to the mic screaming “ØL OG VIN TAKK” AND SOMEHOW IT CANT HEAR ME? When in duo it can hear me by whispering anyway I’m not promoting duo I’m jst saying my opinion 1 star.Version: 8.29.0

HorribleSlow and painful. The voice recognition is horrible and makes learning impossible, boring and overall makes me hate the app.Version: 8.29.0

I must be SO RemedialHello, sorry for the 1 star review, I must be missing something. I bought Rosetta Stone a while ago, all languages for a lifetime. However, I am missing something and really hope someone sets me straight. I am happy to up my score for some constructive help as this should not be so difficult. I resurrected this to learn German and I am quickly reminded of why I stopped learning Italian on Rosetta Stone. THERE IS NO DIRECTION. I just do not understand. I do the exercises daily, but there is no explanation for conjugation of verbs, new vocabulary thrown in with no translation. Don’t even get me started on the ‘milestone’ exercise where you have to guess what you are expected to say. So where am I going wrong? Is there a secret section that explains all this, or am I the only person who doesn’t get it 🥺please help me 🙏.Version: 8.30.0

Free TO TRYFree to try only first 2 - 3 basic lessons..Version: 5.15.4

Update: Could be better, quite a bit betterBeen using this for several months and still progressing so overall my opinion remains the same. The app _still_ needs a major overhaul to address use on smart phones. On later modules text is impossibly small. Also the pictures portraying sentences are sometimes baffling. Still no response from any RS developers so I guess they don’t read these messages. Previous review. (August 2019): The app looks to me as though the screens are ported from the web. The images are often difficult to associate with the theme. In later lessons the longer sentence text is impossibly small to read. While the app is quite slick, the use of phone screen area needs a serious rethink. The language learning method is good and the spoken audio clear. I really feel like I am making progress. I asked RS if I could access the same course online, but got absolutely no response. So on customer support ONE STAR. If RS sort out the wasted screen area and text rendering, this could be super..Version: 6.4

Speech Recognition is very finickyThis language learning service is great from what I have seen so far. However, they pride themselves on having excellent speech recognition, which is not the case. I am learning Dutch, and when I speak in a lesson, I get marked as incorrect 60% of the time. However, I will repeat what I said in the same pitch, speed and intonation, and it is marked as correct. I am incredibly confused and it makes it incredibly demotivating and hard to learn a language if I have to gamble if the speech recognition will work or not..Version: 8.28.2

Good But Needs ImprovementUpdate: Updating my review because I have seen marked improvement with the speech recognition and I feel like that deserves to be recognized. However, I’m still leaving my review at three stars as I’ve noticed other buggy things, like when you go to the learning section I have to click two units above the unit I want in order to select. Also, the app will randomly log me out and then say I am already logged in and cannot log in again. I continue to think Rosetta Stone is a great product and a great model, but I really wish they would put more effort into their app. I haven’t been using this app long, but I can tell it’s a good format. The one thing that really frustrates me is the speech recognition. This does not seem to work at all, and is surprisingly worse with headphones. I have to say things multiple times and mostly it just doesn’t recognize that I’ve said anything at all or takes far to long to process. I constantly get the “there’s something wrong with your audio, check your settings message,” although outside of Rosetta Stone the audio on my brand new device is fantastic. This would be a great feature if it worked consistently..Version: 8.30.0

Good visual appThis app shows you pictures and has a good mix of pronunciation, and visual clues and wide range of languages to learn. The app is slow to log in, and to load the lesson but after that seems to be fine..Version: 2.2.2

Excellent but super expensive and app limitations.Excellent courses, very intuitive. I am disappointed though that because by choosing the basic subscription one cannot access certain functions like downloading: the app is not exactly cheap, the least they could do would be to be democratic and not chastise people for being just a beginner. The app is good but I DETEST that it only includes a number of languages: I bought Rosetta Stone to learn Latin, and sure enough Latin is not one of the languages in the phone app. One should be able to choose where and when to do their lessons, and now often than not one does not have a computer handy. The app should have at the very least a couple of less common languages, and Latin would be the first in that list..Version: 8.11.2

Voice recognition doesnt workThe voice recognition exercises are not picking up on my words. “Hola” is pretty straight forward and it still says Im incorrect when I say it..Version: 8.24.0

SCAMMED.I purchase two LIFETIME programs with Rosetta Stone, totaling more than $600. I am now expected to repurchase a new “Lifetime subscription” because adobe stopped working in 2020. Instead of RS honoring the Lifetime purchases they sold hundreds of thousands of people before 2020, they expect us all to repurchase and expect that, this time, our “Lifetime Purchase” will actually last a lifetime. Its a total scam and I can’t believe they are getting away with it. Shame on you, Rosetta Stone. Your behavior is disgusting..Version: 8.9.0

Not freeAnd not cheap. At least make payment monthly instalments..Version: 8.28.2

ProblemsI really wanted this app to work well and expected a lot from a large company like Rosetta Stone, however I’m extremely disappointed. The app is slow for both me and my wife on our iPads. It’s full of bugs and issues. It crashes frequently, refuses to pick up our voices when we talk, and seems unstable. Couple these issues to the fact that despite buying two lifetime licenses, my wife’s account was frozen while they demanded we pay more money. It has taken over a month to sort out, while we repeatedly had to message their customer services department who were completely useless. We never received an apology or explanation. When they did eventually restore an account they reset the wrong one. Disappointed..Version: 6.2.0

Looked good until i got to the first screen and could not continue???Tried the demo and got to the first screen.... Ni how, got the green circle then nothing. Could not continue. tried swiping, gesturing... doing anything. Completely stuck. All i could do was swipe up to quit as a last resort. Could not figure out what to do next. There is no visual affordance or cue about what to do next. The user experience is really bad as there are no controls i could find to help me. It had not crashed, just could not work it out. If the free trial is this bad, I’m unlikely to sign up. 1 star..Version: 5.15.4

Doesn't work, just crashes after log inCan't use as per title..Version: 2.1.0

Good in theory, but it’s not good on iPhoneThe program itself seems great. I have been learning Russian on DuoLingo for a few months, and am progressing quickly, but wanted to expand and try different approaches. I do think the Rosetta Stone language recognition from the mic is much better, meaning I can work on my pronunciation more. However, in the short time I have been trying it, every exercise includes several photos. On an iPhone screen, these photos are so small and the action the people in the photos is doing is so unclear that I’m getting at least 50% wrong just because I can’t tell if someone is eating or drinking, or in some cases if it’s even a male or female, girl or woman, boy or man. DuoLingo solves this issue by using only cartoon drawings that are VERY clear as to what you’re looking at. Unfortunately, I cancelled my subscription because I can’t learn this way, but if you use an iPad or laptop I would imagine it’s a better experience. I’m not willing to use a different device when DuoLingo works just fine on iPhone. Edit: the developer response to this review shows that they did not read my review at all and are just responding with generic fluff. I actually said the speech engine is good. It’s the user interface/photos that are bad..Version: 8.22.0

MeHow u can charge me $299, I want my money back, I downloaded but there were no mention it's gonna be cost, fraud I am so worried could u plz refund my money, I was not sure it's gonna be cost,.Version: 4.3

What I rate this app atI love the app I am learning a lot of the language that I picked but I don't like that you have to pay a couple hundred dollars to finish the entire task or entire language.Version: 4.4

ArabicThe app itself isn't bad but without the translations you actually don't have a very good idea of what you are saying. Basically there are 4 pictures on a screen and the app says something in the language you want to learn. You then try and guess (and you are just guessing) what is being said. The main issue is that the images of what is being said are so broad it could mean a whole bunch of things. This app could have been 4-5 stars if it included the English translation of what you were saying based on the images depicted so you actually had any real idea of what the words mean. Definitely a waste of time and money..Version: 8.29.0

Updated version doesn't workHaving used the old version of the app with no issues at all, I downloaded the updated version and now the voice recognition doesn't work. Exactly the same thing happened to my partner too as we updated it at the same time so I know it's not just me. I've emailed Rosetta Stone but they just send a generic reply saying to check my headphones and the setting, even though I've explained that everything else is the same and worked perfectly in the old version of the app minutes before updating it. It would be good if Rosetta Stone could take responsibility and fix the issue with the new version of their app as it makes their new app unusable..Version: 8.21.0

Missing one thingI’m doing the first unit for french, Unit Basics and wish the picture you click correctly on had the words/phrase translated to english for my notes. I don’t like trying to guess the word they would like me to learn, then having to look it up somewhere else. I would like to learn the correct word/phrase the first time so I don’t get confused or have to relearn it in another unit/on my own..Version: 8.29.0

“Free-trial” trapThis app would not open for me on my second and final day of the free trial, saying there was an “error” and to “try again later”. This meant I could only trial it for one day, which was not enough time to decide whether it was worth paying the huge fee of $175. However, I was unable to get on to the app to cancel my subscription so the money was taken from my account anyway. I feel as though I have been scammed as I was unable to utilise my free trial before paying for the app, and the fact that the app didn’t even work for me yet I had to pay all of that money is concerning. I am very upset and disappointed by the issues this app has caused me..Version: 5.9.1

A lot of lagsTried on my iphone 11 and Ipad Pro, both have problems with freezing and lagging. Low framerate animations, 5-10 seconds delay between pages. Shame to have too bad app condition and ask 150 dollars for year subscription.Version: 8.28.1

Best language app, but...This is the best language App I have tried so far. And I have tried quite a few. But you can't have any noise around when trying to use the microphone. And my only times to use this are during train commutes..Version: 4.6.1

Great for learning. App could be improved.I’m enjoying learning with the Rosetta Stone app and I feel like I’m making good progress in all the languages I’m learning. Unfortunately there are a couple of issues with the app that make learning less enjoyable than it could be: 1. The iPhone version of the app isn’t well optimised for a phone sized screen. In exercises where there are more than 2 images the text becomes cutoff and images that you need to choose from to answer the exercise are tiny. I know that you can click on the image to make it bigger, but this is annoying. I just feel like if you compare the app to Duolingo, the Rosetta Stone app could be much better optimised for smaller displays. 2. I frequently move between the iPad version of the app (where none of the layout issues exist) and the iPhone version and syncing of progress between the two devices is very slow. It would be better if this handover was smoother..Version: 5.14.1

Poor speech recognition.Just tried this in the trial mode as I wanted to learn Dutch. Did the first two lessons and thought it was good, I was getting everything right. Then I read one of the reviews regarding speech recognition and how poor it was. I decided to try it by substituting words with similar sounding English words and to my horror they were accepted as correct. I was thinking of buying a subscription, but now I have changed my mind. I think I would have looked really stupid if I had completed this course and then gone to the Netherlands and started speaking What I thought was Dutch. My advice before you purchase this is to try saying things differently and words differently and see if they register as incorrect or not. Think I will have to look elsewhere..Version: 5.4.4

Falls way short of duolingoThe free version is nothing compared to what duo offers for free. I have not paid for premium, so this review is based off the sample lessons. Ok, so first of all, the interface is pretty bad. Poor design choices in terms of hard to see/unclear(contextually) photos and hard to press buttons. The speech recognition is basically useless I was marked correctly for something I said “wait what?” to, and it is also super difficult to re-listen to the phrase. Secondly, you can cruise through a lot more than one lesson on duolingos free version, and Rosetta offers 1 lesson. Like I used duo for a good six months before subscribing. In terms of value, I’m not really sure if Rosetta has more to offer in V.I.P., however, it seems like the app needs a lot of work before it is even close to as fun or easy to use as duolingo..Version: 6.1.0

The app is often brokeRegularly freezes up if you hit the hint button. Which is really annoying when the only part about the actual learning that I dislike means you have to use the hint button. The part about the learning I dislike is it expects you to know the exact sentence it wants you to say, word for word, based just off a picture. This is made worse by the voice recognition….. Voice recognition is really hit and miss, it often works for a while then suddenly it will not accept anything you say for one particular part. Close the app and re-open, then it accepts what you say first time. At the moment a recent update has caused it to rotate to the opposite orientation that the iPad is currently and it is stubborn about changing when you try to rotate it back, sometimes even rotating to keep itself upside down. The menu screen where you pick your lessons often doesn’t update as you go. Now a recent update has stopped it from opening previous lessons, it just colapses the lessons tiles back on top of each other. This is a premium app that is not cheap at all, I expect better on the basics of simply working..Version: 8.23.0

Why is it different??I got this because I have the actual PC version of the Japanese Rosetta Stone, and I thought I would be able to access it through the app. Instead, it’s acting like it's a completely different thing?? In the app I can see all the progress I’ve made from where I’ve done it on my computer, but I can’t continue anything and the only option is a huge green button that says “unlock full access” which asks if you want to buy a subscription when you hit it. I already bought the program (which was very expensive), so why in the world would I want to pay nearly as much as what I already purchased for the SAME THING I already purchased when I already have it?? This is just as bad as when Adobe switched from selling full real CD copies of their programs to being subscription-based. Very very disappointed that you can’t get free mobile access when you have already bought the darn thing; it feels like they’re punishing people who prefer buying complete versions instead of subscriptions. I could have sworn back when I bought my RS that it said there was a mobile option for people who bought the physical copy, but evidently this isn’t it. If they’re going to treat this like a totally separate thing you have to pay for, it seems like the progress from your physical copy shouldn’t even be there at all..Version: 5.7

Save your money and try something elseHonestly one of my biggest purchase regrets. With all the language apps out there I thought Rosetta Stone would be tried and trusted and would make it a point to make sure their app was good quality. Instead, I’m constantly running into issues. The audio randomly decides to change which speaker it comes out of mid-lesson, so it’ll start coming out of the small speaker made for calls so I’ll have to quit out of the app to reset only for it to do it again. The voice recognition is atrocious and it’s constantly saying my microphone is providing poor quality when I’m sat in a silent room with an almost brand new iPhone. Then there’s also unnecessary irritations like the screen auto-orientation randomly flipping when I’ve got rotate lock on. All in all, I wish I’d got LingoDeer or even Duolingo, because for the amount I paid for it, Rosetta Stone is considerably worse than some of the free options. Incredibly disappointing, absolutely would not recommend..Version: 8.24.0

Poor voice recognitionThe app needs to be modernised. Very expensive for a buggy app..Version: 8.18.0

Better than other language apps but needs workI like that you can learn opt to learn to speak, read and write in your chosen language but the app itself is quite glitchy. I often have to wait a second after the prompt to pronounce a word/sentence of it tells me the pronunciation is incorrect. Also the lesson home screen appears to be broken and wasn’t fixed with the update. It would be helpful if we were taught grammatical rules as we go too.Version: 8.25.0

FrustratingOn my iPhone 11 images are hard to see. Cues are insufficient to understand what is the intended response. Listening and speaking exercises become difficult too quickly. Deleting the app..Version: 8.22.0

Can’t Cancel!!!Recurring billing continues and no response from customer service. I’ve called, sent emails and used their online form. No one ever picks up or responds. The function to cancel within the app does NOT function. Thus I continue to get billed. Just opened a fraud case through my credit card company. Rosetta used to be a legit company… I guess they changed. Stay away. You e been warned..Version: 8.28.2

Excellent but flawedThis is a very fine learning environment, but for the cost, we should expect seamless experience. The microphone often does not work even with a headset, and at times every answer you click is deemed ‘wrong’. Yes, iOS updates are an issue, but with a company this big, swift app updates should provide functionality fixes..Version: 5.4.2

Disappointing thingsIt’s as accurate as i thought it would be i am doing Tagalog and i pronounce the word wrongly but yet still got it correct just to make sure i asked my mum who is a filipino and said it was wrong so i am a little disappointed but yet a good way to learn.Version: 8.27.0

Predatory Trial PracticesI was excited to try this product and as is the custom they offered a free trial with automatic billing when the period ends. I decided not to continue with the product but have struggled to confirm if the trial was even started, can’t get access to cancel, and there is no facility to delete the account. Make sure you check out several reviews of this product before you even think about giving it a go. They have clearly spent a lot of money on influencing and reviews. I would rate this zero if I could. Avoid this trap app and company..Version: 8.11.0

App usageI love Rosetta Stone. But the app makes it difficult to learn. There are occasions that if I login to progress my learning, my progress is not saved when I later visit the app to continue. I find that many times the speech recognition does not work properly. I might say ka instead of ha and I would still get a correct answer. Sometimes it does not even recognize my voice and I have to open and close the app many times and it still doesn’t work. Update: after working with Rosetta Stone app and website on my computer I fee extremely frustrated. The method they use is very effective to help learn a different language ... BUT their programming is horrible! The website and the app are both choppy!!!! I contacted them once through the feedback ferrite as it was advised ... the lady recommended me to delete the app from my device, update my device, turn off my phone, then turn it back on, and finally download the app again. The app was worse. My computer is also updated and the website most of the times does not recognize my voice or marks something correct before I even speak ... I feel so frustrated that makes me want to stop learning a different language. Such an unpleasant experience..Version: 8.0.0

Terrible! use DuolingoThis app is weird, stupid, obscure and terrible. I think the reviews that are positive are fake. Deliberately confusing seems to be the modus operandi. I have learned much, much more from the free version of Duolingo. One thing you need to know about Duolingo is you can get health back by practice. This app seemed good during the small free part, it’s no surprise they want you to pay for the whole thing upfront, no one would continue if it were a monthly plan. Save your money! Ridiculous scenarios are given with vague pictures and you’re supposed to supply the dialogue, I couldn’t provide the dialogue in my native language let alone in a foreign language. Stupid stupid stupid deliberately vague aggravating, and they know it and don’t do anything about it. The microphone works only intermittently sometimes the speakers don’t work either, supposedly the app is saying something but you don’t hear anything and it Marks you wrong when it’s never said anything. Incredibly aggravating makes my blood boil. I don’t know why I ever spent any money on this app. It pisses me off to read all the reviews and they tell you to go inside the app and report the problem. I took the time to tell you what the problem was- go fix it don’t tell me to go report it somewhere else!.Version: 5.5.1

Overpriced and outdatedThis review applies to trying Rosetta Stone for Japanese. Rosetta Stone is simply a solution of the past. There are way too many modern language learning applications that have been proven to work better than this one and are far cheaper. Rosetta Stone is a relic that focuses on rote repetition of out-of-context words and phrases; it was designed back when people studied language using cassette tapes while driving to work and they have never updated their methodology. The intent is that you learn by being “immersed” in a language, however to Rosetta Stone, immersion means “here is a rather ambiguous picture, now figure out this sentence using words and grammar you haven’t been taught.” This isn’t how to truly learn a language, it’s how you memorize outdated phrases and look like an idiot when you try to speak to locals. As for the app itself, the voice recognition feature is indescribably bad: I literally started to say “blah blah blah blah” and was marked as correct half the time. The play back of phrases is clearly English-speakers reading from phonetic scripts, so the pronunciation is horrid. On top of all this, the price is ridiculous for such a poor tool. The great reviews here must be from old timers who don’t know better options exist. There is no reason for this to have more than two stars..Version: 5.15.4

Horrible subscription serviceI am not trying to hate on the app, what I’m saying is that… well, just what the title says. Recently I got “kicked” from my account and lost my subscription. And it literally says that it was a Lifetime subscription! Hey, stop trying to mislead people into getting this “lifetime” subscription, it’s stupid, and offending. My father knows that these are tactics to steal money from pockets, and if that is true, then I won’t forgive the subscriptions. I will continue to use Rosetta Stone, rebuy the pass, and know that that I will be logged out and do this over and over again. What a fun endless cycle of subscriptions this is. Oh, and some lessons are horrible, offering duplicate answers and “repeat after the sentence” is bad, so I switched it off. Wait! I have one more complaint. Want to learn to be truly fluent in a language? Well, you have to be a corporate person. The advanced language skills are for business use only, so good luck. And in my opinion, they are unreasonably age rated, and it just looks dumb. So how about the developers move all the advanced skills to the main app? Would be a relief. Sorry for being a “I want to talk to the manager” person but I am being honest. Well, I am still using the app and enjoy it, so these are only red flags. Hopefully people will see this and get it with a word of caution..Version: 8.28.2

Good, but room for improvementI really like the concept of Rosetta Stone. Learning without translation through repetition while looking at descriptive images. This is how we originally learned our first language (with images replicating our real situations); however when we originally learnt we did not learn to speak read and write all at the same time. I feel that just learning to speak for the first few months would be more natural and more manageable. There is quite the cognitive overload trying to do everything at once. Finally since Rosetta Stone has decided to have us learn to hear speak read write all at the same time I would appreciate it if they could make it easier to repeat lessons. I am managing to move through at a slow steady pace however I need to repeat lessons multiple times and the app really doesn’t like me doing that. The lessons seem to run in blocks of 39; so after running through the 39 lessons I like to start again at 1 and redo al 39, however this seems to make the app crash, or only repeat a small portion of the original lesson and then when I have completed 1 again it will jump randomly to lesson 28 or something. Overall I’m finding it useful and I will continue using it, however I would really be pleased if some of my issues were addressed..Version: 8.25.0

This app sucksI have to do this app for school and I hate it. Rosetta Stone sucks. It keeps crashing and freezing..Version: 8.21.2

Course is decent but the app is awfulThe course structure is good, however use cases of specific phrases are not explained well. E.g 2 ways to say “I am” but there is a specific context for which each is to be used. The app is horrible, you can’t always translate everything, sometimes the option is just not there. If you also want to reset the course e.g. after a really long break, it is not straight forward to do so, you have to reset each unit one by one. Also cannot repeat the basic stories from the daily course because there is no way to reset it at all. Also can’t redo a module from a specific day via the day view even if you didn’t get 100%. You have to go to the learning tab and find the module - rather cumbersome and a shame you can’t just open the unit when it’s right in front of you. Would give the course 4/5 but the app is an awful 1/5.Version: 7.16.0

Bug in UnitsI am really keen to use this app, but when I try and tap on a Unit, it opens up a totally different one that's further along. This may be a bug that needs fixing? Thank you.Version: 8.29.0

Expected better for the costPoor voice recognition, which makes it a useless feature. Apps like Duolingo provide the same content in the end, making this not worth the money. I had multiple instances where the “voice bar” rated green, but the app registered a fail mark, increasing frustration and not making the experience enjoyable..Version: 5.10

Keeps saying course store errorTerrible user experience. I have a 6 month membership and i only just started. App keeps telling me it’s unable to open and i keep occasionally having to re download the application making it slow and extremely inefficient. Too expensive to be giving me this many problems. I have used duolingo which has proven to be free and fast too. I also cannot tell my progress as clearly with this program too. Rather than a clear structure it just feels a little ambiguous. Not impressed at the moment..Version: 5.3.2

BUGGYLet’s be honest, Rosetta Stone is on the pricier side of language learning apps, which makes sense in a way because it is a good program, but wow nothing works! Some lesson cards appear as blank so you can’t complete your program, no response from support, live chat just sends you to a survey to rate the live chat, they’ve introduced live coaching lessons which they appear to let you trial the first one free, so scheduled one, and it is now nowhere to be found on the app (iOS, iPad, and Mac)- good thing it was free as live coaching is about £30 for a 25 minute session…it’s just kind of sloppy to be honest… the number of times I’ve had to go back and redo the ‘stories’ and ‘audio companions’ because they randomly show as incomplete.. save your money and try duolingo or even an actual language school….Version: 8.1.0
