✓ Constantly logs you outLike many other complaints here and elsewhere, my number one issue with an otherwise decent app is the fact that you are logged out often just by switching between apps even for less than a minute, sometimes after 5 minutes of going back and forth. So long as the app is open you should remain logged in. This is a serious flaw for people who are trying to perform research and otherwise use the app. I cannot understand how the company hasn't yet addressed this serious flaw in all of its many updates..Version: 4.8.0
✓ DNA Test Questions Left UnansweredMy DNA test results said I was 87% Scandinavian and 13% Iberian and that’s it. I have rang them and emailed them as I thought the results would be more detailed than that. They have still not answered my questions and it’s been over a year now. Very disappointing! ✓ Not worth it. AncestryDNA is better.I was curious about this service and I saw it has a free 2 week trial. So I thought "great let's try it out". I subscribed then read all the reviews on how they charge your card anyway. I immediately made sure that wouldn't happen to me but when I did they ended my free trial too. I only had the free trial for two days. Two days! Then those crazy pop ups to buy an expensive annual plan. Only annual plans. No monthly. No quarterly. I tried reaching out about why my free trial was cut short they said it was bc I canceled my subscription. But on every other app that has this option let's you finish your free trial and then offers a deal still at the end of it. These people just seem money hungry. Not to mention I transferred over my info from AncestryDNA and it's been a good while with no results back yet. The original time estimate was only a few days. It's been weeks at this point. And it's the only reason I even still have this app. But it looks like they even get dna estimates wrong. Guess we'll be eventually seeing what they claim my background is. Even though my information is all pretty easy to identify. Wish me luck everyone. Maybe they'll say some crazy ethnicity that I'm very much not. At least it'll be a good laugh?.Version: 6.2.2
✓ Great App, but packages and billing need workI use this app mostly for its ability to fix old photos and it works great for that purpose. The issue I have is with upgrading from the free account. There are way too many options and very little literature about which plan allows you access to each feature. Had to call customer service which was somewhat helpful. One major issue was my bank initially declined the purchase over the phone with customer service and sent me a text asking to authorize purchase. Now I have 3 payments that went through to My Heritage. My suggestion is to simplify the packages and better explain what functions you unlock with each package..Version: 6.0.2

✓ MehThe ancestor/heritage features aren’t special and you'd get better features elsewhere that won’t cost $200. The photo animation feature’s cool and honestly needs to be a separate app because it has cool uses like making artwork talk, but it’s limited by being for dead relatives only and it’s honestly a weird disrespectful feature to have your dead grandmother go “Hi my name is blank and this is my life story! 😃” Plus the fact you can only use two photos for free with limited animations before getting the pay wall is pretty lame. And you have to unsubscribe from the 2 week free trial within 24 hours before being charged that much so you basically don’t even get the full two weeks. I wouldn’t recommend even trying the free trial because I’ve seen others have trouble unsubscribing or being charged after doing it in the correct time and the dollar amounts keep jumping around which seems strange.Version: 6.2.1
✓ Disappointed. Needs better sorting of family infoThis is an expensive app. In my case, it’s been disappointing because the discoveries are not clearly sorted and alphabetized by father or mothers side of the family. When you want to view a discovery, the app doesn’t take you directly from what you clicked on from the email so you have to try and find it yourself. I have been frustrated especially trying to find anything that’s legitimate on my mother’s side of the family. I see no way of contacting the researchers when I have a question. You are pretty much on your own. I was originally drawn to the clever AI animation of old family photos but have been disappointed after joining this expensive app..Version: 6.0.7
✓ Too expensiveFor what it is, it’s super expensive. For me I love photo features - it has fixed some of my photos and gave them a fresh lease of life. The colourising is very good and the animation option is magical (although sometimes scary). The downside is you get limited use of these features and then it expects you to become a yearly member - even with the 30% off offer it’s still over £150. I don’t want a yearly membership - I just want to use the photo features … I’d be happy to £9.99 for the photo features (or if they really want to over charge people I’d be happy to pay £4.99 for one months use of all photo features) Stop forcing people into annual pricing when it’s absolutely not necessary and well over priced considering who tends to use this app and how often they actually will use it. The price puts me off and having spoken to friends who like doing their family tree it has put them off too..Version: 6.0.2
✓ Couldn’t even get past sign upFirst page asking to put in personal details. Asked for “Year of Birth” put 1995 and it kept telling me it’s incorrect. Put my full birthdate in, wouldn’t accept that either and told me to put in a 4 digit number: gee why didn’t I think of that!? 🙄.Version: 6.2.12
✓ DisappointedAttempted to use this app to build a family tree. I was drawn to the idea of being able to use photos for each member. I clicked to add a photo, selected photo, cropped the photo, clicked save and it wouldn’t show or save. It just showed a wheel spinning like it was loading. I tried it at least 5 times for multiple people on my tree. I finally got it to work and saved. I came back the same day, and everything was there. I was excited. The next day (today) I come back and most of the pictures and relationship were gone. Thankfully, I didn’t put a ton of time into this project. Disappointed with the apps save feature and disappointed that it isn’t always user friendly..Version: 4.7.2
✓ Be careful of your moneyWhile the introductory level of this app gives little better than the free FamilySearch app what you really need to watch out for is their sharp business practices. When you want to cancel your (free) trial subscription, they offer you a 14 day free extension with the assurance that you will be alerted before the 14 days is up with the implication that you can then cancel without charge. You will not be advised until the time is already up and then only to congratulate you on your subscription which can be cancelled a year later. Good-bye $189!.Version: 5.6.9
✓ Watch outDownloaded this app to use and try and it seems really good - well thought out and very clever app. I subscribed to the free 14-day trial - and then cancelled it straight away so I still have access for the free period to try it out without the pressure of having to remember to cancel it if I don’t like it and be charged over £100 if I forget. Alas the greedy culture of the world kicks in and these guys “stop your free trial” - because I Calverley my payment straight away - would anyone really be that petty and greedy to stop a free subscription period? So be careful - it’s only free if you are prepared to fork out for the full subscription. If that is what they are like to a new customer the mind boggles for the rest of it. ✓ Free trial problemsI thought I’d sign up to a free trial to try out the full functionality of the app. I always cancel a free trial in the Apple subscriptions in case I don’t get on with the app but forget to cancel and usually this doesn’t interfere with the trial period. In fact Apple say I still have access to my trial, but the MyHeritage app itself has revoked my access. It seems I will never know whether the subscription is worth buying or not, but anyway I’m put off by this tactic - it seems to be designed to prey on those of us with less optimal executive function!.Version: 6.3.8

✓ Poor compared to ancestryI’ve built an extensive tree on Ancestry & I must say this doesn’t even come close to being as accessible or efficient as Ancestry when it comes to building a tree, I’ve spent 2 minutes on the app and that is already 2 minutes of my life wasted When you search for record for any given family member, you can literally only search using their name, the website then throws up tens of thousands of people with the same name expecting you to go through them, even when you state that particular person was born in the UK this app seems it necessary to also show you everyone born by that name in the US too. One feature that is probably the most important feature for an app like this, the search, and it couldn’t be more vague, no advanced search, just a search button where you type someone’s name Main takeaway: if you have all the free time in the world to spend hours searching through thousands of records just to find one that matches each individual ancestor of yours then this app is great, if you want an app that will give you records based on a more advanced search system that will use the details you input to find more specifics results then sign up to Ancestry.Version: 6.2.24

✓ AI Art feature is not included in free trialBut it won’t tell you that until after you’ve made an account, agreed to the free trial (that if you don’t cancel, you’ll be charged $129CAD), AND selected all your pictures to use for the AI. It’ll spend about a minute processing and then “oh OOPS! I forgot to mention! If you wanted to use the AI that’ll be an extra $16CAD.” The app seems well designed and functioning, I understand needing to cover costs so you make a subscription, but it seems scummy how the only package available is over $100 and they don’t tell you anything about the subs until after everything else..Version: 6.2.13
✓ Needs ImprovementThere are certain things in this app that it is great at accomplishing. I have found a lot of information here that I have not found on other sites similar to this one. Not to say that there aren’t still some seriously necessary tweaks that could be done. 1. Every time I shut this app, just for a minute or 2, it takes me back to starting position. So when you want to go back to what you were working on, you have to find it again... and again.... and again.... and again. You get the gist? 2. I work this on an IPad and it’s the only app I have that doesn’t support split screen so that I can use it and another app at the same time. Opposing apps have to sit on top of the MH screen as the MH screen will not shrink or draw up from the toolbar. 3. When adding a picture of someone to their profile, why does it add a second picture to their album. The album that has the exact same picture? Makes no sense. 4. Where is the information sources after you approve them. Sometimes I like to go back and verify my information is correct or consult it to possibly draw more information from and finding it is a booger, let me tell you!! That’s all I got for now. ✓ Website better than appI like My Heritage & have traced my direct ancestors back up to 11 generation in the mid 1500s. However, I tend to use the website. The main benefit is being able to open several windows simultaneously, you can keep one hard found page open while you look at profiles it relates to and research some of the new information & relatives discovered therein. Otherwise you're tempted to tap "Match" instead of checking out any inconsistencies. I'm also looking forward to the long promised "Extract info to your tree" function where we have the button but, when you tap it, it gives a "coming soon" response - both app and website..Version: 4.2.7
✓ Nothing worksI haven’t been able to get my family tree gedcom file to successful post to my account that I paid for a year package at the top tier level. All of this time is passing that I haven’t been able to use. That means that MyHeritage is stealing my paid time from me. Every time I upload it says successfully done and I should wait on an email that NEVER comes. Every two months I remove my old tree from MyHeritage and upload the newest version. Everything worked great until the last 4-6 months. As far as hints, person matches, instant discoveries etc. That has NEVER worked. Not one time. It’s almost like MyHeritage believes I made up all the names and dates of people in my tree. It has NEVER brought a single record to my attention. I have limited on time so I won’t even get into how bad the App is. The tree layout is the worst of all other companies (except 23andMe - they are by far the most awful). It’s almost like MyHeritage is trying to push their customer away. The only thing MyHeritage seems to care about is getting customer to upload photos. Well, guess what’s never going to happen unless a bunch of stuff changes..Version: 6.2.26
✓ Highly dubious practices & data misuseAfter setting up a few family members and being diligent around trying to complete as much info as possible, I discovered MyHeritage sent an email to a family member pretending to be from me and inviting them to visit the website. The email my family member got was was from ‘MyHeritage on behalf of [my name]’ and if my family member replied, the return email address was just [my name] which means they had been able to prefix my legitimate, personal email address with their own name. I find these practices very dubious and I am not convinced these aren’t in contravention of GDPR legislation in UK and whether it is or isn’t, they are misusing my personal data and do not have my express permission to do. Complaints have gotten nowhere. UPDATE A member of VIP support contacted to resolve but still months later I continue to receive what I now regard as unsolicited emails as a result of the highly dubious practices they employ to hook you and your family in. ✓ Needs to be able to limit head movements, and detect partial (profile) faces.This could be an awesome app, and it is good for full faced pictures. I was truly hoping it would allow me to select the face I want to animate, and be able to animate side profile faces. Also, would like an animation option with only eyes and small mouth/cheeks movements (very little to no head movements since head movements distort), to be able to animate a side profile image or newborn babies etc this would be best. But also the little to no head movements would be beneficial for full face pictures too. ✓ Do not download or do free trail!!!I was so excited to download this and learn a little bit about my ancestry. So they told me I could do a 14 day trail and can cancel within those 14 days. I cancelled within the allotted time and they still charged me!! The crazy thing is they even charged me a day early!! Right away I email and call multiple times with no response. Finally I got through to someone and they said they see I cancelled on time but they couldn’t refund me and I couldn’t contact the billing department directly so they will call me. It’s been a week and still nothing. Also I have have like three support tickets through email and haven’t heard anything through email also!! I went through PayPal for the free trail and on the charged it also says myheritage dna which is weird and concerning within itself cause I never even signed up for the dna part of it!!! If I was you DONT NOT DOWNLOAD OR DO FREE TRAIL!!! Go with myancestry!!! At least you can actually get through to talk to a human being through them and they don’t illegally bill you and if they do they would probably try and fix there mistake. ✓ RIP offI recently received my DNA results and am very unhappy with the vague information I received for £90. 685 pages of people who may be related to me. The first page relates to a few people who may be 1st or 3rd to 5th cousins. Apart from the DNA rubbish myheritage sends me regular emails to tell me they have found people/information/photos about people matches for my tree. The information/photos they find is the what I have researched myself and already uploaded on my tree. The photos I uploaded are my personal property. My family don’t have copies of these photos so where else could myheraitage have got hold of them other than my tree. I have rated them one star..Version: 5.4.0
✓ It’s useful but too expensiveI don’t really work on my family tree outside of my vacations so buying a whole year for the price for me it’s a NOPE. I get that there’s quite useful stuff for premium accounts but most of the useful things for me have been put by other users or I investigate by myself online. I also reached the limit of members already since I put my 2 families. I don’t know for what I have been experiencing on the free version I just don’t think it’s worth it. If there was just a light and way cheaper version where I could just connect to my other relatives matches (that i have added as contacts and are working on their own fam tree) and the info they put and more relatives space, that would be amazing. ✓ The app and site getting annoyingI’m grateful the company ensures there are no robot hackers. But when the site has given me hundreds of matches to reject or confirm, the anti bot kicks in and constantly asks me to verify I’m not a robot, and it’s not quick either. It asks and asks just to confirm one match, and then does it all over again for the next match. It’s not fun. Once I’ve got through the matches if it keeps doing it I won’t renew at the end of the year because of this. My device is verified so no need for it so often. Plus the matches aren’t good matches either always. Another ancestry site seems more accurate so might convert to that once my membership ends.Version: 5.5.1
✓ Encounter bugs that make the app unusable in every key featureI can’t believe how incredibly saturated with bugs this app is. I heard about this app via TikTok and was excited to try the animated photo feature. I can’t even upload photos! The subscription plan pop ups are completely confusing and keep asking you to switch plans after you’ve already purchased a plan (I subscribed to a paid plan to unlock the features I wanted to try but the features are unusable). UX functionality is full of bugs. Backend updates (in-app content updates) post-data-entry actions take over 15 minutes. I even tried the mobile web version and that is also full of bugs. Just another example of using most likely cheap development work to ship a product without end to end QA. Ancestry is cheaper and I’ll just go back to using that..Version: 5.8.7
✓ Poor UIJust found it a really poor user experience. When searching records there is no navigation button back to home page so you have to keep clicking the back button until you get back there. When you find a match there is no way to just click a button to add that match to your family tree, you have to write down the details and then return to the tree and manually create a new record. Unless I am doing something wrong it’s just a really slow and painful experience. During research sometimes the filtering does not seem to be available at certain levels so you may have hundreds of records but no way to narrow further. Also signed up to premium and auto discover never returns any smart matches even through I had 11 members mapped into the tree. There is also limited data, putting in known matches for close friends and family I have only been able to find a few records. Overall, very disappointed..Version: 4.9.0

✓ ScamAfter an initially impressive demo, whereby I was shown a few of my relatives on my tree, the app demanded an upfront annual payment of 100 dollars. I paid this as a (late) Christmas present to my family as a whole, being a student on low income. After paying, the app was then unable to add anything further to my tree - I tried to add various relatives manually (and correctly), in the hope that I would be offered another extension to my tree. This did not occur; essentially, I’ve paid 100 dollars and haven’t gained anything more than a glorified piece of paper on which I can draw this tree. I would love it if the MyHeritage team could cancel my membership and refund the payment, as at present, this is simply abhorrent..Version: 4.10.5
✓ Not a fanThe App is not user friendly and you always end up in an advertisement for an upgrade which is so annoying. It’s confusing to use and links that don’t seemingly work. I have tried to contact the company on how to have this refunded as I had no correspondence to warn me of this amount. I have tried everything on the site and have got no where. Be warned it you use this ap you will have no warning of when they will take more money or how much they will take. It looks like all I can do it cancel for next year as I have no idea how much they will take in the future. Very unhappy, if I had been given options I might have signed up again. ✓ Not worth the money and cant tell me my heritageI bought this because I wanted to know more information about my ancestors. However the information is so vague unless you are European . I had South Asia and west Asia regions but that’s it , does not go into detail which countries your connected to. It just says the Asia which is no use lol a complete rip off. I rang to find out why and was told some to nearest effect that the countries in those areas are not with myheritage so they are can’t go into details. It’s like if you got results back saying Europe but they can’t specify which countries exactly your DNA are from, just Europe region , you would feel angry and most would agree it’s a con. Only consider this if your white European . If you’re from anywhere else in the world like Asia they cannot tell you any information apart from that your from Asia region. Whenever I confirm somebody it’s great, however if their name comes up again and I want to just save new info, I find I have them listed in another place. Is there anyway I can just merge this info. I have gone as far back as 25 generations and have assigned a number to each generation, I really don’t want to start all over. If I can merge I am willing to go in and erase all generation numbers assigned to each individual. ✓ This company is horrible they will steal your money!!Ok so here’s the story or should I say stories smh I ordered a kit in November and was a little worried when my results took LONGER THEN 4 WEEKS! But I let it go due to the holidays and thought it was a nice gesture that that gave me a few months free of the premium service …. Fast forward to January 2022 I ordered another kit (decided to give them another chance due to me THINKING the OVER 4 WEEKS mark was due to the holidays) SMH nope this kit has been late with the results too I called customer service multiple times and all they keep saying is “last step last step” however it’s been on the LAST STEP FOR WEEKS! So understand that THEY LIE WHEN THEY SAY! 3/4 weeks it can take up to 9/10 weeks to get your results! I see all these good reviews but something isn’t right (UPDATE I received a email stating that the customer service agents can only give me the information that they see! I am very aware of where my family is from, but this test was way off and even admitted it wasn’t confident. Keeping that in mind I wish they had a free trial period or a way to pay monthly. It seems that everything I click leads to a “pay for this” link and it just keeps adding crap to my cart when all I’m trying to do is LOOK at something. Even when I was just trying to sign up it kept looping back to a page to buy a kit or a subscription. It’s very annoying. A free trial, say 2 weeks, and the ability to pay monthly would be ideal and in my opinion get more subscribers. People would be able to see if they like the interface, get hooked on clicking matches and discoveries (you do get hooked!) and be more willing to pay for a subscription instead of feeling like it’s being shoved in their face at every click. ✓ AI Time Machine needs lots of workI paid for the 800~ bundle which is not a bad price but I’d say over half were unusable. At least a dozen had NO HEADS which kind of defeats the point of portraiture. Lots of them chopped off the hair at the hairline making it look like a badly framed Polaroid from 1972. Even worse we’re the weird distortions in the base portraits. Arms that end at the elbow, fingers that defy logic and bend at impossible angles. One portrait as a WWII General had a uniform jacket only on the right side and the left was his bare torso. All of the portraits where the subjects face was not almost full frame were unrecognisable as human faces let alone my face. Facial hair and swords (ie anything long and skinny) often extended beyond reasonable probability to become smoke-like tapering ribbons that spin off beyond the paintings borders. Hats were the worst offenders. They seemed to hover in midair a couple of inches above where they should naturally sit. I don’t expect perfection but I do expect a greater than 50% success rate for my money! Maybe version 2.0 will be better as these kinks get worked out but for now - too hit and miss!!!.Version: 6.2.26

✓ Has potential but is kinda terribleThe idea is cool and slightly easier to use than other ancestry websites HOWEVER big but here it’s basically impossible to edit the family tree one the people are made you can’t edit their parents or who they’re related to. The app kept making mistakes with half siblings and such but you cannot change their parents and if you want to delete them you have to delete their whole timeline children, spouses etc, which ok makes sense because people can’t exist without parents but I’d you want to edit their parents you just have to delete them and start over. When looking at a DNA match you are shown a list of shared matches. If you click on a shared DNA match, but then try and go back to the original match, it takes you instead to the main DNA matches page. This is a very frustrating and time consuming bug because it is often necessary to check out shared matches to try and identify an common ancestor. Another feature that could use work is the Inbox system. On an iPad it is very easy to touch somewhere not intended (another link etc) If this happens while writing a message or response, you will lose all of the text you wrote. ✓ Useless unless you payWhile you can use my heritage to make a family tree (up to 250 people I believe I read) and store photos, if you (like many others who want to use a service like this) are looking for the matches to complete a family tree and see more details than you know you have to pay their subscription price. My experience with this app was overall disappointing: I put in the information that I knew and was told there was a match to one of my relatives. I tap the “check match” and immediately get thrown into a “pay for this service!” type of deal. I have absolutely no idea if it’s even worth paying for as it gives you so little details it’s almost like you’re gambling if you pay for it (am I going to get an accurate match with details? Or am I going to pay and get absolutely nothing?) On top of this the family tree portion of the app felt awkward to use and many times I couldn’t even position the view where I wanted so my family tree was mostly off screen. From a family full of divorce and several affairs that led to various “illegitimate” children including my father and several others that are genetically related but adopted - this family tree builder is HORRIBLE. You can’t edit relationships like marriage - it automatically assumes my grandmother married the man she had an affair with (my paternal grandfather). I also have two half brothers. This doesn’t help me to research but I’d rather a hindrance. I also tried doing this through their mobile website but not getting anywhere. ✓ Good but not yet greatI love this App. I have over 26,000 entries and it handles them well. The search is good but seems to ignore important search values like dates. The Discover option is nice but I’d like to be able to turn some searches off. I get over 80 discoveries for some people (notably LDS) and, while I don’t have an issue with it I really tire of dealing with them. Even when I go through all 80 discoveries for a particular person a few days later there are 84 more for the same person! That is not ok. In searches there is the option to select just family tree returns and that is very helpful. I would love to see the option of selecting the how many branches off the direct line. There is not good tracking of direct ancestors and I’ve found the only good way is to assign a special picture for all Direct ancestors. That way when I look at the various trees I can always find my direct lines. I doubt the tracking with a special icon would be difficult. Direct Ancestor tracking seems to fall apart after 8-12 generations and it would be nice to see that addressed..Version: 4.8.1

✓ Inaccurate percentages & ethnicitiesI’m a mixed person with a mixed mother with African ancestry & Caucasian father. I’ve taken other dna test & they’ve all come back with a high amount of European ancestry, some African ancestry, & some Andean and mixed Caribbean ancestry. It makes sense because that’s what my parents are. I took this one to find family. My results from my heritage says I’m 76% African (47% Nigerian & 27% west African) & 24% European & other. The funny thing is I’m related to tons of European & European decent & people of mixed backgrounds. I’m puzzled. A lot of my ethnicities did not show up that is available in their system. A lot of the “other” ethnicities they estimated in my analysis are not in my family at all. I’m puzzled how I’m more African than my mom, in their estimates, who is mixed with some African ancestry & I have a completely European father?
