CHRONO TRIGGER (Upgrade Ver.) for Negative User Reviews

No thought put into the controls.Rework the controls. Half the time I hit the wrong target because target switching doesn't work well. The experience is broken and hard to recommend to others.Version: 1.0.0

No sound in iPhone 11 X-rayGreat game. But there is no sound. I have to use earpod hear the sound. Please fix the bug or refund me the money .....Version: 2.0.5

My favourite game - brokenPlease do a proper job of porting your valuable classics.Version: 2.0.0

Two massive problems make this game really frustrating1. No way to turn off the in game sound or music, which means you can’t listen to music, podcasts, or audiobooks while playing. Insanely stupid 2. The in-combat targeting is trash. You can tap directly on the center of an enemy and the game will, instead of targeting it, randomly attack something else. Given that most boss fights require precision targeting, this makes lots of fights incredibly difficult and frustrating for no reason at all. Garbage controls should not be what makes a boss hard.Version: 2.0.5

Low resolutionIPhone XS Max full screen remake.Version: 2.0.4

Horrible controlsWorst controls for a mobile device, gave up with the game after 10 minutes..Version: 2.0.5

Awful portI love the game, but the controls in this port are dreadful. Targeting during fights is particularly difficult; you're supposed to drag to switch targets, but it often overshoots or mistakes a drag for a tap. And the battle mode seems to switch back to not waiting, so if you have to target a particular part of an enemy (hello, Dragon Tank!) everything on the screen is going to stamp you flat while you're trying to get the cursor to do what you want. Get yourself a DS and that port, don't waste money on this..Version: 1.0.5

ReallyI’m a little bit shocked that you can’t watch the cut scenes anytime you want. Also the endings should be saved and be able to watch anytime you want. It’s 2019 and I remember playing this when I got it in 1995 and the game for that time. Would’ve been five stars but this is 2019 so I would expect certain things to be better especially the ability to be able to watch the cut scenes once I have achieve them anytime I want like in other games. Or the endings to be saved so I would be able to watch them anytime I want as well especially because there’s 13 endings....Version: 2.0.4

Slightly AggrivatingControls are very clunky, but manageable once you get the hang of them. iPhone 4 has slowdown on some of the tech abilities which is distressing. This version is mostly the DS version as late game has the Lost Sanctum and Dimensional Rift. Currently cannot beat the Sun Temple boss as the game crashes when the boss casts Flare. Would like that fixed ASAP..Version: 1.0.3

Missing techsThe update notes for the most recent version says it fixed the missing tech bug but it didn't. The bug is when you do a new game+ and talk to spekkio for the first time, to "learn magic", it makes you forget all techs you knew that you wouldn't know T this point on a regular new game. The patch notes say that if you use a save file from before the techs were lost then you won't lose them. However, when I loaded the save file I had right before talking to spekkio and then talked to him, I lost all my techs. Please fix this bug for real. It's the only reason I don't play the iOS version. The SNES version is better..Version: 2.0.3

Graphics look better/ Still not updated for iPhone XThe graphics look better and I applaud you for spending the time to do that; however, I was hoping that there would be iPhone X support with the new update. I realize when I was playing on my iPhone 7 several years ago that the picture didn’t fill the full screen and had a modified interface to deal with that, but it’s only taking up a small portion of the iPhone X, making me not even want to play. Please update this somehow. Thank you for the continued support!.Version: 2.0.0

No time for the greatest game of all timeWhere is the universal version? Or Retina graphics? Up scaling on the ipad 2 Looks about as good as the old CRT televisions...Version: 1.0.0

Great game rubbish controlsChrono trigger doesn't even need a rating it's a timeless classic but the port is hopeless. The touch controls are rubbish swipe and tap gets confusing and don't even get me started about death peak. Also graphics leave a lot to be desired, do the game some justice and revamp it just a little. Honestly people who download and emulate get better than we who support squareenix. Dissappointing..Version: 1.0.0

Glitchy, ugly portGraphics are stretched from the DS version and blurry Sprite tiles glitch frequently Controls are awful, hard to navigate anywhere. Game quickly becomes a chore. Not worth buying at all, no matter how much you like Chrono Trigger..Version: 1.0.1

Sound not workingI downloaded the game, and as i open it, the sound is somehow muted, i cant find any sort of settings in game and sure as hell don’t know how to fix it OFF game. If someone knows what I’m going through and know how to fix this please let me know, because right now to me this is a waste of time and money..Version: 2.0.5

GlitchesLots of glitches.Version: 2.1.0

No music? There’s absolute no sound! This is a paid game and there’s absolutely no sound for me! How do I fix this?.Version: 2.1.1

Bug on iPad Mini iOS7This game is practically unplayable on the iPad Mini iOS7 due to a bug where the iPad status bar obscures the top of the screen, Hoping this will be fixed soon..Version: 1.0.3

Runs fine but needs resolution fixCome on guys.. I know this is a classic and all but you really need to update this for current hardware.. Otherwise perhaps it's best to just remove it entirely from the App Store..Version: 1.0.3

Missing Steam Version UpgradesAfter seeing the furor that arose over the lacking port to steam I was quite excited hoping these would be reflected back in this version. It would be awesome to see those make their way back to iOS and especially a revamp of the tvOS version (full classic SNES look and feel, maybe?!).Version: 2.0.4

Fix it!Same problem as the other review doesn't work half the screens glitchy fix this or give refunds to the people who can't play your game..Version: 1.0.2

A great game...Ruined by a horrible bug. The game freezes up and crashes during attacks that fill the whole screen (like Robo's laser attack) and sometimes the game crashes randomly if played for extended periods on my iPhone 4. Stop making crappy final fantasy sequels and fix this square enix!.Version: 1.0.3

MusicWhere is the music.Version: 2.1.0

DissapointingNever played this game before, was really loving the first 10 or so hours, it controls a little clunky, but it was workable. UNTIL it started crashing, getting increasingly bad until it reached the point where it crashed every time I went into a cut scene after beating a boss, with no opportunity to save. Very frustrating. Unless this kind of thing stops happening, avoid the pain of buying this game..Version: 1.0.4

Race brokenJet bike race literally impossible to beat buddy just stays perfectly in sync.Version: 2.0.5

Needs more optionsNo option for adjusting music and sound effects.Version: 1.0.3

Need resolution settingGame is not intuitive on iPhone X and XR due to the fact that you cannot adjust the resolution or screen size. It shrinks the screen and only uses the middle portion. Making the movement controls difficult or unplayable for people with small hands..Version: 2.0.4

Great game, awful over priced portWhile the game itself was great this port is awful. I have played the SNES and DS versions and this is the worst. No cutscenes, poor port of the graphics and text, average controls and a ridiculous price point. Also for anyone wanting to play this on the iPad the scaling is not great. I appreciate that nostalgia goes a long way but take note SquareEnix, lazy ports of classic games for rip off prices ruin the memory of a classic experience. I regret paying that high price and will now unfortunately not be exploring the rest of the Square back catalogue..Version: 1.0.0

Touchscreen adaptation is terribleYou can’t precision touch consistently on a phone that’s just a fact, and when you’re trying to tap on enemies it’s really easy to not actually tap them and target whatever the defaults on, which can royally mess up your fight. This is a traditional JRPG, and precision matters a ton, since one accidental target often just throws your whole carefully planned fight straight into the garbage can. Just get a Super Nintendo emulator and play the original on an actual game pad, waaaaay less frustrating..Version: 2.0.5

Excellent game, awful controlsI'm a long way into this game, fighting the controls but thinking its worth it for the excellent gameplay and storyline, however I've hit an area (death mountain) where exact controls are required, rendering this area unplayable. I would love to give this game 5* however without a fix for the controls im never gonna see the end of it. Feel a bit cheated now, especially due to the high price tag..Version: 1.0.0

New Game Plus still broken?!?Glad to see that there's a new update after all this time! With that said, there still seems to be a major glitch when starting a new game plus file. Basically, all of your tech abilities should carry over when you start a new file for new game plus. However, the glitch basically limits you to each character's first real elemental magic attack (Chrono - Lightning 1, Frog - Water 1, Lucca - Fire 1, Marle - Ice 1). Is anyone else still experiencing this issue? It's annoying that we put so much time and effort into beating the game only to lose half of our tech abilities!!!!!!!!!!!.Version: 2.0.0

Potentially Brilliant, Sadly Not Even Close! Why don't SE make this better? Even just adding MFi support at the very least would make it sooo much better. Graphics SHOULD be updated too, this is a cult classic and everyone knows it. CT deserves the same respect (if not more) than the FF games and it's obvious that people will play it FOREVER! Do it some justice Square Enix, heck afterwards you can put that nice big $18 price tag on it or something (which I, and I'm sure many others, would have gladly paid for a quality version, but instead SE knows the fans are eager enough and will buy it anyway no matter the quality- nice one SE). I'd like to give it 2.5 stars but of course I can't, so it gets under 50% cos the sh!#s given in the first place were obviously ZERO! Just give it MFi ffs!.Version: 1.0.5

A classic that has aged well, though the touch controls are so-soChrome Trigger is an absolute classic of the genre, but play the Nintendo DS version if you have access to it. It ages well for a game of its era, but the only-passable touch controls make it a slightly clunky play. This isn't a universal app so it doesn't scale up for iPads - a version optimised for the bigger screen would have helped..Version: 1.0.5

Good game, Some minor bugsOne is the controls I find a bit sloppy, hard to keep a running pace and change direction. Another bug I just ran into is the race in the future with Johnny. When you change the race mode some times you have no more control and have to watch the whole race of you ramming into Johnny, pretty frustrating when your trying to get a score for prizes :(.Version: 2.1.0

Game is great, port is badIf you’ve never played this game, it is a great accesible JRPG, one that doesn’t make you get into the weeds on the mechanics, but still offers an engrossing skill system. The game has a really compelling story that holds together thematically (in a way that almost none of the Final Fantasy games pull off when they wax philosophical). This is one of those things in life for which the hype is not unwarranted. However, this is a bit of a junky port. It is essentially the DS version, but there is nothing new on offer, no extra content, no graphical tweaks. You cannot turn off the sound in-game, unlike other Square ports, so you cannot play background audio. The controls are not great, I recommend using a controller...but if you’re going to do that, might I recommend playing this on a different device?.Version: 2.0.5

Faulty gameHalf the screen flickers grey and black (enough to give an epileptic fit) making thr game totally unplayable on mu iphone 4 - no fix in sight.Version: 1.0.2

No soundNo audio on new iPad mini.Version: 2.0.4

Way to ruin a classic gameDo NOT buy this game as it is now, the new update broke the sprites so now they don't align properly, and you get horrible texture filters applied over everything. Final Fantasy 1 looks better than this. Dafaq are you doing Square Enix?.Version: 2.0.0

Don't bother on an iPhone 5s currentlyThe game is great but don't bother buying it if you have an iPhone 5s currently. There are graphical glitches that have been acknowledged but it has still been a year since the last update and there is no fix..Version: 1.0.3

With an update...Please sharpen up the graphics square. A 500mb game should look better than this, and if theres a way to improve the touch controls that would be great. It's unplayable, but it feels pretty horrid to have to swipe to select things then tap anywhere to use it. Why not just do what you've done before and make it work. Its hard to distinguish between little swipes and a tap sometimes. I love this game, but i think you can do better square. The retina update for ffta: wol proves that you can do it! Don't just leave it to the text in chrono trigger!!.Version: 1.0.0

No audioYouTube plays sounds but Crono Trigger doesn’t. I’m going to try to get my money back now..Version: 2.1.1

Buggy port of a great gameUpdate: as others point out, massive graphical glitches on ios6 make this unplayable. Square sell the most expensive titles on the App Store, yet have - by far - the worst maintenance and support of their apps. Time to move on; would advise emulators and rom sets for anyone wanting to play their square titles from when they cared about producing quality software. Oh dear. So first the bad: clunky controls, messages telling you to 'not turn off the device while saving' (rushed snes port?) and a HUGE battery drain. This app will drink your battery dry in next to no time. Next, the awful. It deletes your save games at random, and has no mechanism to back them up - open feint, Dropbox or even iCloud do this for many other titles. Square tech support suggested deleting the app and reinstalling - which makes no sense at all. Admittedly, they provided this useless support very promptly. Finally, over 600mb for an app that would have been no more than 8-16mb on the snes? How on earth did it get so big? tl;dr: great game, but a buggy, lazy and unreliable port, for a premium price. If you want to play this game, play it elsewhere. This is the only app purchase I've ever regretted making..Version: 1.0.1

Needs a patchGreat game, but the iOS version has an annoying life bar overlay underneath the characters on screen that obstructs targeting enemies in the cramped environments. It could easily be moved to the bottom of the screen with the rest of the battle info. PLEASE FIX THIS SQUEENIX!.Version: 2.0.4

LetterboxedRecently updated, but doesn’t support the full iPhone screen. Shows as a small window in the middle of the screen with black bars all around. Wait for them to fix this before purchasing..Version: 2.0.0

ControlsThe game seems to be great. Great graphics, gameplay, the lot. I just can't get to grips with the controls. When running about I often run the wrong way and picking up items can be frustrating too. I just wish the controls were abit better. I died 2 times just getting past the games intro, due to not having grips on the controls. Would only reconmend this game if you are a fan of Chrono Trigger..Version: 1.0.0

Weird glitchThe game is glitching when im around other characters in the game these large squares appear on top of them so please fix this asap.Version: 1.0.1

Wow no sound on iPhone we and no support from companyIf anyone is reading this from Square please give me a refund. No sound at all so game is unplayable. Thanks for stealing my 7 bucks..Version: 2.0.5

Poor port of great gameThe tile set... has anyone tried this port recently? The scaling of the tile set leads to distorted graphics because it is scaled disproportionately and not like the original game on snes or an emulator. an eye sore to look at; Please fix..Version: 2.0.5

Broken!I should have listened to the other reviews! I have an iPod touch 4th gen running on iOS 5.3 (this is because iOS 6 does not allow direct downloads of podcasts to the device and instead makes you use a crappy new podcasts app with half the current features). The information claims that the game runs on iOS 4 or higher anyway, so this should not be a problem. As other recent reviews have stated, when I attempt to play the game the screen glitches out becoming boxy and broken. I have uninstalled and reinstalled, restarted my iPod, and deleted all my quick bar in an attempt to fix this, however it has done nothing. If apple hadn't broken podcast I'd install iOS 6 and maybe the app would work. However, Square Enix shouldn't lie to customers and put out a broken game. I thought I was getting a bargain, one of the best games of all time (or so I'm told) for just $7.49, however I strongly encourage anyone thinking of buying this game to at least wait until a fix is released (so wait until post v1.0.2). After that, maybe I will enjoy and recommend this game..Version: 1.0.2

Save your money, play it elsewhereIf you've played this before or not, do not waste your money here. It's a great game, but the port does not do it justice - sloppy controls and a lazy font conversion in particular let it down. There are other, far more functional ways to play this legendary game. And since square won't improve on this version it's impossible to recommend it..Version: 1.0.0

Superb gameThe game deserves the full five stars but I'm giving it 3 due to how awkward the touch screen control can be certain parts can be really difficult for example a certain challenge requires you to hide behind the skinniest trees ever before you are blown away by the wind by god it's nigh impossible using touch screen.Version: 1.0.5

An okay version of a great game that deserves betterThis review is for the March 10, 2022 update. This is a good update, and it's nice that it got one years later, but it doesn't fix some of the most annoying issues. • Controller support. It's technically there, but button presses work like they do on the touchscreen rather than being properly configured for a controller. What this means is that in certain menus or, most notably, in battles, the game responds when you RELEASE the "confirm" button rather than press it. This often makes the game feel laggy and like it's slow to respond, and makes it annoying to play on higher speeds. • Apple TV support. Again, it's technically there, they check that box, but all the touchscreen buttons are still there, now blown up on your big living room TV. This means you've got a big MENU option in the upper right corner the entire time. • The filter. It's not the worst I've seen, but it's still pretty bad and can't be disabled. And now, a new annoying issue: • Adding the ending log is great! It's better than the log on the DS version, which didn't let you rewatch the endings. However, if you, like me, happened to burn through all the endings only a week ago and got the achievement for every one, guess what - you have to do it all again to unlock them all in the log. Argh!.Version: 2.1.0

Ugly sprites on Ipad Air and iPhone 5SWas really excited to play this game again - it’s a great game. This port isn’t really displaying correctly though. The character sprite colours look inverted and kind of transparent. Really ugly :( Please fix ASAP..Version: 1.0.3

Great game, okay port. This new update is definitely a solid effort. The pixel filtering and menu design are still pretty awful though and would do well to copy the Steam version..Version: 2.1.0

Don't buy itDon't buy any iOS game from square Enix as they may pull them off the shelf..Version: 2.0.4

A bad portA ruined interface, an ugly HP/MP bar that you can’t remove to really make sure you can’t enjoy the original artwork. The extra content is really unremarkable. I wish they just ported the original without changes. The team that ported this really didn’t get the spirit of the original masterpiece..Version: 2.1.0

I would give this 4 stars but..The iPad mini black status bar at the top of the screen cuts into the game screen. I can barely access the menu and when dialogue appears at the top of the screen, I can't read half of it. PLEASE FIX this as I'm aware this is a recent problem with the new iOS patch!.Version: 1.0.3

ControlsGreat game, however the controls are pretty bad. So unfortunately I will have to only give it 3 stars until an update comes out. I found it really difficult to move around. Please fix! Also, it's a little disappointing that they couldn't upscale the graphics better. It just looks blown up..Version: 1.0.0

No soundGame has no sound. I’ve tried everything. Want a refund..Version: 2.0.5

Shame it doesn't work on 2nd hen iPod touchesAs title says, I'm somewhat disappointed that it doesn't work on my iPod. Never played through this game but have been eager to try it sometime. Wish that I had known that some apps only work with certain systems to avoid buying what I cannot use. The reviewer below me has an incompatible model as well which is why you get a black screen..Version: 1.0.0

Great game just need to make contact with developersKeeps crashing when i get to magus castle and in ozzies conveyor belt section. Otherwise its an all time classic 5 stars, just putting one star so the developers are noted..Version: 2.0.5

Great game, bad graphics filter :(I just downloaded the upgrade and it’s nice to finally get some updated visuals and the animated cutscenes from the PS1 version. Sadly they have applied an awful filter to the graphics like in some emulators. There is nothing wrong with lovely clean pixels or even scaliness on 16-bit graphics. The previous version filter wasn’t great but this is just as bad in my option. Please can the developer at least provide options in the menu..Version: 2.0.0

How does a 1.2mb snes rom take up 500mb ???For such a price and such great size I expected a graphics update or at least graphics filters!!! Which isn't hard to add square, stop being lazy and work for your hefty prices..Version: 1.0.0

Tiling is brokenThe tiles in almost all parts of the game are all misaligned. Extremely annoying and weird to look at. Completely distracts from the rest of the game..Version: 2.0.0

No cutscenes?I purchased this thinking that the cutscenes where include. But they will not show up? Saying that the cutscenes are included is misleading. They are not in this version. Please fix, I’ll will leave 2stars for this..Version: 2.0.4

Cannot downlodI purchased a while back. I want to play again. Tried to download again, and now it asks for my payment details in a never ending loop... what a terrible download link... I’ve paid and they stole my money... I do not recommend!.Version: 2.0.5

Crappy triggerWorst port ever. On screen d pad is way to difficult to guide the player. And I keep seeing sprites flickering! Waste of money. Gonna download a rom version and enjoy this game with no rubbish.Version: 1.0.1

Good but....Great game, and loved it as a child - but seriously update the graphics. It looks horrible, hefty price and size I was expecting more. Please update the graphics!!!.Version: 1.0.0

Not iPhone X compatibleAppreciate the update but seriously, why would you not include iPhone X screen format? Seriously!?.Version: 2.0.0

Good story worst controlI truely do not understand how square enix could have made the control so bad. Its impossible to walk around without getting stuck on random pixels. This issue would be fine EXCEPT you need to face the thing you are interacting with 100% dead on. Oh look a twinkle! Lets go suss out the twinkle! NOPE first you need to walk into 100 random pixels then bump into people in the way and then get stuck with the people, then stuck with your own party then finally you get to the twinkle. Seriously square enix, give a little more leeway in the controls and it will be a much better game..Version: 2.0.4

Chrono triggerA really good game let down by a terrible movement system, the touchscreen interface is just bad..Version: 1.0.1

ChroNO TriggerI completely thank and appreciate Square Enix for their efforts to bring this fortified classic to iOS devices although the exclusion of the game's original menu and 16-bit text aesthetic that brings the complete intended SNES experience 'on the go' is a deal breaker for me. I think I'm going to stick to the Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console edition..Version: 1.0.1

Why no iPhone X supportIt’s been out for 6 months. Confused as to why you didn’t add the resolution.Version: 2.0.0

Still faultyShockingly the iphone 5s came out over a month ago and yet still there is no fix for the graphics problem. I do not recommend as still can't physically play it. It's noted that there are problems and a fix is forthcoming? Yea... Right... Over a month!? People who report fault with MY programs get a fix in 1 day. Sort it out ---- further to this review it's been 3 more months and still no fix. Yet this game is still up for download. Beware 5s users, this game DOES NOT WORK. Apple should suspend sales on this app until they fix it as 4 months for a minor graphics bug fix is pathetic.Version: 1.0.3

Tedious does not equal goodThis game has a lot going for it, however, it comes from a time when tedious and difficult were synonymous with being considered good. Times have changed. Tedious now just means tedious. This game, a bit like my review, is tedious! Not worth it in 2023..Version: 2.1.1

Shoddy Port for a Great GameChrono Trigger is a fun, simple and often excellent JRPG from the SNES. This version contains that same excellent story (with the addition of the improved DS retranslation) but with awkward touch screen controls and horrible graphics. The game is still serviceable but, if you can, get it on DS until they improve the controls and revert the graphics..Version: 1.0.3

Good. Please fix to make it great.Glad to see this update and huge fan of the original I played on SNES - I found the original iOS release unplayable, and this upgrade is much much better, but there's a few things to make this port great... Requests: 1. Please allow turning off image smoothing or any interpolated (bilinear, etc) scaling - It looks blurry. I and it seems almost everyone else prefer the original pixel art unaltered and crisp (nearest neighbor / pixelated) scaling. 2. Still have to say this plays better with a controller, since Chrono glides past things if you aren't perfectly pointed at a Target on a perpendicular axis, so the New MFi controllers support is good…but game doesn't tell you anything about what button to press for anything like the pose matching at the fair, even though you can use controller to play those parts / so you have to do dinner guess and checking for that currently. Can't walk with controller joystick, only run, even when run/walk is set to Both, which allows the virtual joystick to do so. Also menu button doesn't bring up the game menu on iOS but why not? 3. Please support iPhone X for fullscreen. Note: I was able to return the cat to the girl at the fair that other reviews mention being broken, so it seems that has been fixed..Version: 2.0.0

No SoundThe game has no sound on iPhone 11 on iOS 13. Takes away from the experience quite a bit..Version: 2.0.5
