✓ Works as advertizedWhen I look at the features of Boat Beacon I can verify it is working as advertized. While other boats around you will not see you transmitting unless they are connected to the Ship Finder or Marine Traffic web sites, this should help you being seen to Vessel Traffic which is great. The ability to see other traffic around you and get CPA information without going below and looking at your dedicated AIS receiver is also a plus. For example, I have found the app very useful in checking on the three Wight ferries coming in an out of Lymington and my position to them in the entrance and it gives a very accurate reading. Like another reviewer, it does enable family and friends to check on my position for piece of mind. Every one to their own but it is certainly one of my personal top 10 sailing apps. ✓ Great app considering it is web-AISI use this in Long Island Sound which is busy with commercial and ferry traffic. Boat Beacon is wonderful in the fog with or without using radar. Makes me want real AIS except for the expense, installation and upkeep of same. App has an annoying habit of crashing every so often when I am running it in the background "tray" and wish to return to update ships after doing other tasks on iPhone. ✓ Works well on old WiFi iPadI use this on a first generation WiFi only iPad. For GPS position data I use a Dual Electronics Bluetooth GPS. For Internet I use a Verizon 4G personal hot spot. This combination works well. On a recent cruise I saw excellent correlation between the displayed position and visual siting of a car carrier and the tug assisting it out of port. ✓ Boat BeaconI am a commercial fisherman in California an have 40’ state of the art fiberglass troller/crabber. I have 10s of thousands of dollars of navigation equipment onboard - I pretty much use none of it - Boat Beacon pretty much makes all that stuff obsolete for an obscenely low price. I can see where the competition is fishing complete with their track lines any where any time. Customer service is outstanding - email them and they get right back to you. Boat Beacon shows all AIS vessels as well as mobile phone network boats which are invisible to AIS equipped rescue boats (in Australia at least). Can share your whereabouts with friends and more rescue personnel are putting it on their mobile phones so they can see BB transmitting boats when out rescuing. ✓ ExcellentThis is a very good concept, and it's well executed. I leave an older iPhone aboard with a cheap data connection, and get a constant update. The best bit is that it all works on a standard GPS equipped iPhone or iPad, so there are no extras to buy and connect. Every sailor should have one now that most seem to carry a smart phone, and it works even more splendidly on an iPad. I had one technical glitch over a weekend and it was solved by some enthusiastic and adept work by the developer, there and then. Only then did we realise that we are living less than fifty miles apart. Glad to know something so useful is being developed here. The only downside is that some people may not understand the concept, both for AIS, and for this variant. Boaters may be technical, but they aren't exactly the most ardent for the New. Sextants and teak still rule. But for those of us living in the 21st century this is great software, and, yes, it's pretty robust and effective. Don't hesitate!!.Version: 2.3
