✓ I usually don't do reviewsI usually don't do reviews, but I thought this deserved one. After being a MASSIVE fan of the series since the original release in 2001 naturally, I was excited about this. If you liked the original, you'll like this, simple. There isn't any extras, but there isn't anything taken away either, apart from a few graphical exclusions such as bullet casings. One thing to be wary of, is that touch controls are horrific when you first start. It'll take you a good 20 minutes to get used to the controls but after that, it's plain sailing. Buy it and enjoy it! :).Version: 1.0

Max Payne is one of my favorite games of all time and was excited to play it in my new iPhone but the problem is that in the first mission when i shoot the first intruder the game crashes and shuts the game off completely. ✓ Clumsy but DecentPlaying on my 3GS and it took a long time to load up. Once in the game all the controls had to be adjusted because my fingers were all over the screen with hardly any way to see what I was doing. Even still, the controls feel clunky and options like the weapon choices are tiny. Accuracy is always going to be a problem with this game as it was designed with a mouse involved and the auto aim assist does help out. For the price that it was, it's not a bad purchase choice but it's not the same game that was out on PC..Version: 1.0

✓ Overall Great ExperienceThis was actually my first time experiencing this game (I hope I didn’t just commit a sin by admitting that), but overall, it was a positive one. The game ran at a locked 60fps throughout my entire play through and I cant recall encountering a single bug while playing. A well earned five stars I’d say! My only disappointment came after completion of the story when I found that Rockstar had yet to port its sequel over to iOS! ✓ A real blast from the past.The setting options are vast for a phone game. The controls are very intuitive with you being able to switch to auto aim or go at it free style if you so wish or enlarge/shrink buttons (you can also reposition them. The auto aim does make it a breeze but I'm playing for nostalgia so am not too fussed. The touch controls are actually some of the best I've seen on a phone (playing on Ipad is awesome though). The real impressive feat is seeing the graphics and realising how far gaming has come in such a short space of time (rockstar were alway more about gameplay than looks but still...) Don't be put off by nay-sayers who complain about touch controls, its a touch screen device and you bought it like that. I especially like I can skip the "Blood trail" sequences and they don't really work on this device. What would be great though is being able to use my phone as a virtual controller for ipad - thus leaving the screen free of buttons and just having the game in all it's glory. Any chance Rockstar wanna do this for GTA 3 and this bad boy? Come on break the mould!!.Version: 1.0

✓ IOS just got serious!This game is identical to the original PC version which came out years ago, however that doesn't mean the quality of the game has dropped or the graphics are dated, the game is outstanding with very sharp graphics for the retina display and incredible depth in the storyline. I have an iPhone4s and it's perfect so if you have a new iPad it's going to look awesome. I really think iOS gaming is setting the standards and the games are at a fraction of the price that you'd pay on the 3Ds or Vita. ✓ SoundI’ve played Max Payne on iOS for years on my old iPad (3rd/4th Gen). I started playing it again on my latest iPad and the gameplay is perfectly fine. There’s just one problem and it’s the sound. Unfortunately, you can’t have the option to change the sound to Dolby, stereo or mono and I play with head/earphones. The sound is different on the newer versions of iOS because it picks up noises like the guns, wind, voices etc. from multiple places and it switches from left to right and from right to left. It’s a little frustrating because you can’t hear those sounds from both ears at once. So overall, the game is wicked as always but when wearing head/earphones whilst playing this, you can’t hear certain sounds in both ears. Especially the footsteps you make, they keep switching between left to right depending on the camera view..Version: 2.0

It certainly runs and looks a lot better. But still at demanding and heavy action explosions particles ect, the slow down is noticble but still "almost" playable to an standard. Now as you might expect me myself and a lot of others the story is one of the best ever made and excited in any game. The story is fairly simple at the start but it have twists and turns making a whole lot more interesting and Max doing what ever it takes for revenge and justice. The biggest setback is the controls. They are stupidly placed and do, I have customised my layout making it easier to use and "almost" run and shoot". But bullet time makes up for this since I dive at almost every enemy like an boss the run and gun is not to needed for my play style. The cutscenes in an cartoonist style and sound music voices story told ate the best on IOS and reach outstanding good on the pc standards. ✓ A Superb GameEver since I got an Apple gift card this Christmas, I’ve been fretting on what to spend my money on. When it came down to the last couple bills, I saw some Rockstar games and bought this. And I wouldn’t have it any other way. The game works fairly well, and the ability to rearrange your control buttons is really nice. Most levels aren’t hard to play at all. One issue is that it’s fairly difficult sometimes to figure out where to go, or what to do. But I don’t mind that. The levels are fun to play and maneuver (for the most part), and the comic style strips match the noir, and gritty attitude. The story is very interesting and definitely wants to see what happens next in Payne’s story. The Bullet-Time feature is perfect and works well on mobile. It’s very satisfying to dodge bullets and shoot right back. As a content creator (albeit a small one), this game was a blast to play, and I can’t wait to replay it on harder difficulties..Version: 2.0

✓ Good but improvements would be appreciatedI bought this game in excitement as its not often that New Zealand gets a game before the rest of the world, I read some reviews for the pc version of max Payne which was released in 2001 which had received much praise for its deep narrative and sound. The game on the IOS retains the engrossing story of Max Payne however suffers from age, gaming has evolved a lot in a decade and it obviously shows some age (graphically) This however can be easily ignored and you can become sucked into Payne's world. My main disappointment is to do with the controls and the "promise" of retina support. The controls while trying to shoot are overly sensitive and annoying. The game boasts retina graphics during gameplay which is great however during some cut scenes and titles it is noticeable that the retina support is not there. Overall I look forward to completing max's adventure, and I hope the developers address these issues. Not game breaking but irritating.Version: 1.0

✓ Bargain PriceI am a huge fan of the Max Payne 1 and 2 games, so to have this game on my iphone is a real treat. The ability to re-play this action packed game is amazing and the story is as intriguing as ever. The levels are unlocked in a cheat mode so no need to stress about getting over a difficulty hurdle. This port is an almost exact port from the pc, but there have been some changes such as 1 pain killer will replenish your whole health bar and the textures and sound have been lowered for performance reasons. However the controls will need changing when you first start the game as the default controls are not ideal. I recommend you play the tutorial a couple of times and modify the controls to get comfortable with this port. In addition when you select a new game using cheat level selector, you somehow keep all the weapons you used in the last play through. This is good if you go from a later level to an early level in the game, but annoying if all you have is a baseball bat and you want to play a later level in the game. I don't know whether this is a bug or a game-play decision by the developers. Furthermore the crosshair is too small for my liking. Overall it is worth getting as the price is a bargain* and the game-play and story is still a fun and interesting as it ever was, just don't expect great controls. *When this review was written the price was $2.99 USD..Version: 1.0

My first reactions where ughhh, controls where terrible, however after much fiddling I came upon a compromise, double tap too shoot, raised the aiming sensitivity, and used light Aim assistance. It works great with handguns and shotguns. However, the one let down, when shooting you cannot move the aim cursor, which becomes more of a problem when using automatic weapons, which is why the need for auto aim. If Rockstar can update the fire button too move the cursor while shooting (like in Gameloft games, MC3 being the best example) this would be a definite 5 star, I mean the game story is superior to Gamelofts 9mm, but 9mm has better aiming whilst on the move..Version: 1.0

✓ Superb port of a superb gameCan I just say this is one of the few mobile ports of a Rockstar game where the controls haven’t been butchered to hell? The controls here are prefect for mobile platforms. The dual-stick approach emulates the feel of the original control scheme, and the customizable HUD, with customizable button placement/sizes is a welcomed adjustment. The game runs very smoothly, but the only criticism I have is with the weapon select system. If you want to select different weapons within the category like the sawed-off shotgun or the classic dual-berettas, you have to go to the weapon select menu and tap the top weapon of that category, and keep entering and exiting the menu until you get the weapon you want. This is much more cumbersome compared to the on-the-fly weapon selection of the console version. If you can fix this so you can tap on the weapon you want and instead of the current system, it would be a much appreciated fix. Also, totally unrelated, ADD MAX PAYNE 2 & 3!!! THIS SERIES DOESN’T DESERVE TO GO UNFINISHED!!! It’s an otherwise masterpiece and I wholeheartedly recommend checking it out..Version: 1.5

It looks and runs exactly like the original and feels great as a portable game. If I could suggest one change, It would be allowing more than 2 fingers to be used at once. See, only two fingers are read. So one makes you move, one moves the camera, one shoots. That's three. So you have to sacrifice one. For example, if you run and aim (that takes two fingers), the shoot button doesn't do anything because a third finger won't be read. Change that and it's 5-star, because is a brilliant port. It stays very faithful to the original game, and I found that the graphical improvements where really nice, although not 100% retina supportive. The devs have done a great job of mapping the various controls onto the touch interface, twitchy action parts can be a bit tough but the auto assist allows for big shoot outs that wouldn't be found in any other iOS titles. There are a couple bugs that I'm sure RS will improve on, eg stuttering movement when using dual sticks, however I am yet to find anything that takes away from the experience. ✓ Brilliant!Basically all you need here: A fantastic game, just like the original. The controls are easy to get the hang of (If your not satisfied you can always change them via the pause menu). It has all the easter eggs you want, all the game modes such as New York minute (unlocked after you've complete the game) It has Social Club access and saves your stats, its added a Trophy/ Achievement menu (though It doesn't link to your online account) its basically everything that was great in the original, but one step up. Oh and Rockstar... I'm still waiting for Max Payne 2 and other GTA games to be released here! Recently saw two reviews complaining about the movement and they want a refund if its not fixed and another complaining about it not being like GTA. Well, fist off. This is a classic. Controls are hard to master though for a game that is reliant on the user to be moving while shooting at moving targets. As with most 3d games on a touch screen the user moves with the left analog and aims with the right but the problem comes when u need to fire at the same time because the fire button by default is also on the right. But as stated the controls are highly customisable. After getting the game I suggest spending some time changing the controls to suit. Also the cheats are, so far, only access to all the levels. Yes there are a few control quirks but you can set tap to jump or tap to shoot (the one I used with a little auto aim) to compensate for no buttons. I would love to see more Ps and Ps2 titles ported to ios as our phones, pods and pads can certainly hold there own in the handheld market. Now technicals. I am playing on a 4s and I went right through from start to finish. (save alot). Which took me a good few hours. There was a little slow down when the helicopter was about and i found it difficult to control on the dream levels but other than that flawless. The other niggle I had was the fact that I couldn't work out how to zoom in on the sniper rifle (if it even zoomed idk). ✓ So Awesome!!!!Wow. The nostalgia trip was insane! Brought back so many memories. I remember playing this on PS2 as a kid in the middle of winter in Chicago for hours on end. Graphics look much better than the original of course. Nothing special compared to today’s standards obviously but definitely cleaned up and crisp. Not a huge fan of the amount of game they cut out of the mobile version (multiple levels) but it still works and is a pretty quick play in this version actually. Well worth the money and still such a fun and insanely well written game. Ahead of its time for sure. Classic!.Version: 2.0
✓ 1st world problemsStop complaining about a 14 yo game that has adapted so well to iPhone. Awesome used to play it on pc when I was 12. And seriously it was about 100 dollars when it came out if you want to complain about a 3 dollar price tag you deserve a slap in the face.Version: 1.01
✓ “Perfect, but not perfect” ...The story is elegant, the gameplay is elegant, the controls, the attackers, layout, graphics, EVERYTHING is elegant! But, on PC, I wish gore was attached to this game including the NPC textures, immersive shooting on walls/bullet time slow-mo bullet sounds when it passes over you, yaddah-yaddah-yaddah.. would need a lot of MORE elegance and perfection would you attached to this to make it more of a “Max Payne” enough game. And remember: be ready for the pain..Version: 2.0
