Scientific American for Positive User Reviews

Great content but not the appLove the content in general. However the app is problematic: recurrent problem over several iOS and different iPhones, I have to delete the app every month for my account to recognize my subscription. “Restore subscription” never works. Otherwise love the content and will keep the subscription despite the monthly hassle! Update: Looks like above issue was fixed. Also, the app stays at the exact page where I left it when I come back to the app after closing it (used to take me to the home page). 5 stars! Thanks.Version: 2.0.3

SciAm Trash A Once Decent App! SciAm=CrapAppSciAm used to be about great graphics and a great read. Pay for this app and you will get a great deal of white space and typeface to read but not a great deal! SciAm=CrapApp. Don't bother. (I warned you...).Version: 2.0

Where did the library management go?Where is the option to remove an edition from the iPad ? I usually delete the ones I have finished reading - in the belief that I can download them again at any time - but the option is no longer there. The FAQs don't help either. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".Version: 2.0

Long recordScientific American has a long history of high quality science review articles that are accurate and highly readable. They lack the detail found in Nature and Science, but this makes them more accessible to those with a passion for science but technical experience in one of its many sub-branches who like keeping up with advances beyond their discipline. A valuable subscription..Version: 2.0.3

Scientific AmericanThe Scientific American is an up to date journal of the best scientific minds of the world. Excellent articles clearly presented..Version: 2.0.3

Highly engaging formatI love the interactivity built into the app version. In many ways it's a superior format to the paper copy..Version: 1.1

Excellent magazineExcellent magazine for those interested in broad scientific issues..Version: 2.0.1

New Scientific American AppThis is the worst app I have come across. As a subscriber for the last 40 years, I expect to login and download without trouble. Instead all I am offered is to pay for the next edition. It's about time those who proclaim to know about science learnt how to construct a user friendly app.Version: 2.0

Needs accessibility settings improvementsAs someone who is visually impaired, very near sighted, I would greatly appreciate it if you could allow for larger/bolder fonts on the larger iPad Pro, I am running IOS 16.5 and the per app accessibility options do not allow for larger/bolder fonts.Version: 6.0

Pretty Good IPhone interfacePerhaps there is an option to automatically download the latest version when it becomes available. If not, that would be a nice addition..Version: 2.0.2

Bad app that does not believe in improvingI echo others'comments. This app is the worst..Version: 2.0.2

New app is ok, but please bring back the old one.I am glad I can finally use it in landscape mode. Beyond that though, it's just boring. It used to feel like a replacement for, and even more than, the paper magazine. Now it's plain, rigid, exactly one pic per article, zero layout effort, no web articles, no one minute entries or interactive pages. If it's only the words of the articles you want, then this is the transcript application for you. Want to replace the paper magazine and save a few trees? It's not a replacement. I will seriously consider going back to print for my next renewal..Version: 2.0

SA apparently needs to get rid of some subscribersI won't rehash what review after review has said. Something is wrong in the way the app logs people in and keeps track of subscriptions. I read all of my publications on an iPad and with SA I spend most of my time trying to access the magazine rather than reading it. This has been an ongoing problem for a couple of years in various forms. I have subscribed since 1965 and I love the articles but I don't have the time to deal with the app - so I'm done at the end of my current subscription..Version: 2.0.2

THIS APP DOESN'T WORK WITH iOS 8.1The title says it all...forget this app if you are using iOS 8.1 I have been waiting over a month for this app to be updated to work with iOS 8.1....Version: 1.3

BookmarksI like the choice of font size. I can now read the digital version. Search is not so good unless I am not using it properly. Last time I used it, I was not able to search for the second occurrence of a certain word. It always found the same occurrence of the word I was looking for. And I would suggest a new feature: I (and most readers) would find it very useful if l could put a bookmark at the point where I stopped reading for the night so that I can return to that spot the next day..Version: 2.0

Scientific AmeriacnI have been reading SA for 65 years. I have saved many issues and finally trashed them because of advances in science, moving or loss of space. I have always found it rewarding because the contents are readable, understandable and yet cover the subject in considerable depth. I also read Science News (too much depth) AAAS Magazine (also a lot of depth) and New Scientist (not enough depth). SA seems to provide the information I desire at a level that is thorough and understandable. Keep up the good work. BrianK Toren.Version: 6.1

Informative, well writtenI love the app and the magazine. The app provides fast transfer to sections you want to read first. It works perfectly on both iPad and iPhone..Version: 2.0.2

Huge improvementOpens quickly, downloads are super fast. Easy reading with no superfluous features..Version: 2.0

Great magasine.Good variation in topics..Version: 2.0.1

Still a very basic implementation. Needs to remember where I left off and allow finger gestures.I have used the updated version for a while. It is certainly far better than the original. Still some very serious problems. I have a subscription yet I still keep getting told I have to pay for the editions. The app needs to open to where I left off. It still makes me hunt to find my spot. That is very annoying. It should allow finger gestures to enlarge and shrink the pages. A lot of work left to do..Version: 2.0.2

Kludgy and getting worseWhat started off as a wonderful intuitive app that allowed you to zoom in to view figures and insights and bookmark articles has morphed into an app that is barely useful. To views figures now you have to use a tiny zoom window (what genius came up with that) photos can no longer be zoomed. Going back to paper here.Version: 2.1

SA AppExcellent app. Updating my review to point out a major bug with this app. As others have stated, there is a serious problem with having to log back in after not using the Scientific American app for a while. The app is also supposed to support Family Sharing, but in my experience it does not. Scientific American is an excellent publication, I only wish their app was equal to the standards of the magazine. Taking away one star for that..Version: 2.0.2

Last strawIt is a pain that the app after a while it doesn’t recognise my password. As a result, I have problem downloading the magazine. Also, it is asking me to pay when I have already subscribe for the year..Version: 2.0.3

Good app but not greatThe app works well apart from one constant reoccurring problem. It keeps logging me off requiring me to login every time I need to download my next issue..Version: 2.0.3

Not compatible with iOS 8.If I try to download an issue it says to restart the app and try to download again..Version: 1.2.1

Good enough if you can get it to recognize you as a subscriberI LOVE SciAm, so I’m stoked I can read on iPad. One minor issue is every time I open the app it doesn't recognize that I am a digital subscriber and asks me to pay for the issue. Workaround is to sign out and then in again..Version: 2.0.3

Family share failFamily sharing does not work. Family members see the share for a second and then it is overwritten by single issue prices. I bought this to foster my kids interest in science. I am not getting that benefit and you have documentation saying it should work..Version: 2.0.4

It’s an ok app. I wish it were betterThe main problem I have with the app is that it arbitrarily and often removes all my downloads regardless of available space. Believe me, I have lots of space, but is is frustrating that I have to keep on downloading all the magazines over and over again. I also have to constantly re-login. I have the largest tablets cause I like to keep my books magazines etc. ZINIO, Kindle, they work like a charm. Please fix this ASAP. Otherwise the app could be fine..Version: 2.0.3

The app is very hard to use. This is one of the most confusing apps to use. It routinely locks you out, and then you end up in a loop when you try to log back in to your account. Also, I tried to add a subscription, and when I reached the checkout page there were no active options on the screen to actually complete the checkout. I’m no computer genius, but there is nothing intuitive at all about managing this app. I will end up adding a Kindle subscription to Astronomy Magazine as I apparently can not add “Space and Physics” to my current subscription. Very disappointing..Version: 2.2

Fantastic Publication and Good AppI have been waiting for the App version to come out for a while and I am quite pleased with the result. This is a fantastic publication with many noteworthy regular columnists; interesting and insightful content; and for those in the science and research community, it is indexed! I was recommended this and now would recommend it to all..Version: 2.0.2

Amazing content, room for improvement in appAmazing content! I come from a science background and I’m so happy to be able to keep up with the most interesting scientific advancements. As for the app, i think there is room for improvement; -Downloading is slow -would be great to have color option while reading (eg : white on black etc) -no zooming in -I’m having a hard time pulling out the chapters menu in the middle of an article, i have to scroll all the way to the top (maybe this is just me) But i’m sure their team will slowly improve the app! Great content, thanks :).Version: 2.2

Love itI have always loved Scientific American and the App enhances the reading experience greatly 👍.Version: 2.0.2

A great and informative magazine!I've been reading SA since 1964, this kinda makes me ancient...But for the past 4 years have been using the app..great but needs a bit more tweaking..I still get the hard copy though..old habits die hard.. George from Oz.Version: 2.0.2

FixedMy problem with downloading (see other reviews) has disappeared. I am delighted. Sci.Am. And Nat.Geog. are wonderful..Version: 1.3

Wish there’s a dark modeThe app is light, responsive, and easy to use. The transitions from pictographs to words were seamless. Night reading can be made much better with the addition of a Dark Mode..Version: 6.1

Great way to receive SciAmWorks well.Version: 1.1

DrThis new app is Useless. I too have problems with missing issues from my paid library. Currently it is not allowing me access to the current issue even though I renewed my subscription earlier this year. I am also having similar problems with the SA Mind app, which I presume emanates from the same source. Back to the drawing board, I'm afraid, guys. Fortunately, SA issues are still downloadable from the web site but that's not the point..Version: 2.0

Great MagazineI have been subscribing Scientific American for the last 52 years. I read ever, recently some articles have been slanted to the left of the political spectrum. I would like the magazine to publish various points of view. Seas have been rising for centuries and 250 million years ago the Georgia Coast was at Macon GA. Why can the magazine publish articles which describes those events, instead of blaming CO2 from fossil fuels as the culprit. Lately the magazine has been publishing article of little scientific value, these articles should published in a magazine which published less scientific article..Version: 2.2

App is quirkyBelow is a review I wrote about 2 years ago. I still have problems with the app not retaining my subscription information. -— Seems like both the website and the iPad app have had problems for a couple of years that have not been addressed. I got an e-mail verifying my renewal today that contained a link to my subscription. Using that link, I got a page that said, "We have moved," and gave another link to get to the magazine. Since SciAm just sent me that link, why haven't they updated it to take me to the address that they've move to? Additionally, on the iPad app, I have to re-registered my subscription if I have accessed it for a few weeks. After I do that, I have access to the digital issues, but I don't understand why I have to keep re-registering. This annoying problem has been true for previous versions of the iPad app. Despite these problems, I think the SciAm content is great and it has kept me as a long-term subscriber..Version: 2.0.3

Significant ImprovementsThis update is much more stable with intuitive navigation..Version: 2.0

Broken on iOS 8 - but good otherwiseScientific American is an example of how much more interactivity can be built into the magazine experience when using electronic media. SA is definitely a step or two ahead of other science magazines available through NewsStand. That said, my main gripe is that it broke on upgrade to iOS 8. Hurry up, SA - I want to read my October edition! :).Version: 1.2.1

Ah. ScienceI f you want a break from toxic news refresh your spirit with Scientific American..Version: 2.0.3

Works againThanks for the update!.Version: 1.3

GoodVery good recommend.Version: 6.0

Look here for factsWhen you read this magazine, you come to a place where fact and assertion are not interchangeable. In science, the status of “fact” is earned, then earned again and again. In a world of fake news, Flat Earthers, denial, and open antagonism towards learning and the learned, what a refreshing refuge. The topics are widely varied, so if you read an issue, you will learn something..Version: 2.0.3

IncredibleI am always amazed at the wealth of knowledge this magazine has to offer and their app lives up to that same quality. If you’re on the fence about buying a subscription, do it. It’s got information on just about everything from dark matter to weight loss (which at times can seem like a dark matter). Anyway, I commonly read these magazines and this app only makes my addiction portable and easy! Thank you Scientific American!.Version: 2.0.3

Good appGlad to see SciAm finally on the iPad. Easy to navigate and some good use of interactive elements. I'm sure it will evolve, but a good start!.Version: 1.0

Excellent journal...Worst app ever!I love this journal (subscriber to print and digital for three years and occasional reader for 40 years). Readability on Ipad is good. There is a recurrent problem with the logon function!!! Every once in a while, the app asks you to pay for the most recent edition despite a valid subscription and logon to the personal account on their website (happens even to previously downloaded versions!?!). If you are late with paying your subscription fees, you loose all previously downloaded editions on your iPad (so much for an electronic library). Contacting them doesn't get you any reaction for a long time as others mentioned. A journal of this quality and reputation deserves a better app and a better service team!.Version: 2.0.1

An once excellent app, now just ordinary. The latest update has spoiled a once excellent app. A once simple task, deleting editions that are no longer needed, has been made convoluted. Graphics, previously an excellent feature, have been cut back drastically. In an effort to allow variable font size, the look of articles is now spartan. Shame..Version: 2.0

Easy read, complex, hard accessI like reading on iPad. Very nice interface! However, I think the log on process is much more complex than any other magazine. Also when I just want to download the magazine I am subscribed to,it seems I have to page through too many ads for other books and magazines to find it. I do not like SA taking issues off my device without my permission.Version: 2.0.4

Updated for retina display :)Great to have the magazine in iPad format. edit: The latest issue has Retina graphics and the earlier issues are being updated in the next week. The issues can be updated by archiving and re-downloading. :).Version: 1.0

SA Review May 2018This is my go to magazine for all things current in general scientific thinking. While I don't always agree with the editors opinions entirely they are well written and balanced, presenting facts for consideration. Content articles are well chosen with appropriate and relevant topics. In today's environment of fake news and misinformation, cultural and group bias, it is very refreshing to read articles and opinions based on truth and facts determined by observation. SA not only stipulates ones curiosity, it promotes logical fact based thinking..Version: 2.0.3

Well designedVery logical way to move through magazine material..Version: 1.0

Wonderful to see truth!App has improved. Finally remembers me. Still has some problems keeping track of my multiple devices (2 iPhones, three iPads, one MacBook) but works great if I restrict to one device. Broad breadth of topics. Reliable. Great graphics. Prefer to read the physical magazine but I’ve usually read everything on the App before paper arrives..Version: 6.0

Ditto the subscription problemEvery time I use the app it tells me my subscription has expired but it hasn’t. After a few hours it seems to remember. An app with dementia, Useless..Version: 2.2

Thank youThank you for the text resizing. This is very important for older readers, making the app superior to the printed magazine at last..Version: 2.0

How many subscriptions do you needReview of reviews reveals that most of the time the app does not recognize your subscription and tries to charge for issues. Even when you "successfully" restore subscription ( where did it go to néed to be "restored" ) it tries to charge anew. Thank goodness I kept print issue active as well as these do show up. The log in conundrum just completely destroys the joy of reading SA. by making it impossible to do so without wasting hours fighting to get what you paid for. S.A. Clearly not versed in computer science.Version: 2.0.2

Hour glassWhile trying to read an article, the hour glass continues to rotate. This is distracting and irritating, to say the least. Also, why am I not able to share an article?.Version: 6.1

Decent but flawedThe over user experience is decent. However, there are instances where the spin wheel stays on the page even though the article has loaded. This can be rather distracting. Also, I think having a dark theme like what NatGeo has would be nice, especially for night time reading..Version: 6.1

Always a good readThe articles are timely and relevant, and understandable to a lay person, and helpful to a scientist. The only drawback is access to articles on the e-mails are not accessible to the digital version..Version: 2.0.3

Very poor appI have to log in for each new issue although I paid for a 1 yr sub. Ridiculous!.Version: 2.0.2

Intelligent writers, intelligent articles...Not just the headlines of science but also the laboratories and long-term thinking that will pay off in ten years. Incredible graphics that speak to the lessons of the articles. Each issue leaves me wanting more, just in time for the next issue..Version: 2.0.3

Good app but...It is high time sciam released this app and i'm happy to use it. Well, done. On overall, very nice, user friendly app, intuitive etc. There is couple of things however, that could be looked at and fixed in next versions: - the size of fonts should ideally be adjustable, some fonts are just to big to read conveniently, and there's this pixalization thing - there's no search option which is big disadvantage comparing to .pdf version - in addition to current information available in menu tab, it would be useful to see time and battery status - could the size of each issue be decreased somehow? There could be option to download without videos or disable them as it's a bit annoying to listen and see the same ad each time you open the page, even if only the beginning Anyway, thank you again for the app. I will use it and it's great it's there! The contents is what matters and this remains excellent!.Version: 1.0

IOS8As a loyal subscriber to SA for at least 40 years I am very disappointed that they haven't yet updated the iPad app to be compatible with iOS 8..Version: 1.2.1

Love it, except ...The SA is especially informative on my IPad Pro. For the vision impaired it has ways to make reading easier. However there is a VERY buggy login process often requiring elaborate switching between browser and app before new issues can be downloaded. In contrast the login for Science News goes very smoothly..Version: 2.0.4

Informative content with an intuitive interfaceScientific American continues to provide excellent, informative content with an interface that is reasonably intuitive and user friendly. Illustrative content accessed through side bar interfaces is very well presented and easy to dip into and then get out of again to return to the main article. The writing is accurate and intelligent, but always accessible to the non-specialist..Version: 2.0

Ios8 is out. Surprise!Please fix your app..Version: 1.2.1

Crashes on iOS 8And repeatedly asked to reinstall.Version: 1.2.1

Excellent!Makes reading SA on the go a great experience. Well done. Thank you!.Version: 2.0

This app is great on iPhone and iPad.I love bringing this with me everywhere I got my favorite publication, and I have every issue ever made in the palm of my hand. I wish there were a way on iPhone to download multiple issues at the same time though..Version: 2.0.4

Condensed scienceMy to go to for everything science. Informative and engaging. Worth every penny..Version: 2.0.3

Excellent magazineExcellent magazine. Easy to read and very interesting articles. Best science magazine in the world..Version: 2.0.2

Simply brilliant and informativeSimply brilliant and informative for the professional and lay person.Version: 2.0

Excellent mag BUTExcellent magazine, one of the best around, BUT I can't download the latest issue November, it keeps asking me to download the latest app, and I already have the latest one. Please guys sort this out..Version: 1.1

Worst magazine app ever! Why? It can't remember you login ID from one session to another. I always have to provide my login data each time I use the app to download an issue. If they can fix that one MAJOR issued then this would be a decent app to use..Version: 2.0.4

Works Great!!! Except...Cant put a bookmark to hold your Places which is annoying and while I’m typing this my text isn’t showing up.Version: 2.0.4

Much improved but stingyThis latest version loads fast and is easy to navigate. I'm disappointed that I can't actually share a full article without the recipient paying. This only hurts SA and scientific knowledge. Alternatively SA could allow just 3 free shares a month and then ask the sender, not the recipient, to pay a dollar for every additional share..Version: 2.0.2

ReviewI was a subscriber when I was in Uni and was gratified I could once again subscribe now that I live in Australia. I recall an artilcle written by a Father/son team on “Flywheel technology and can’t help relating to our world climate problem and how their device could be buried under the silicon farms. Am really enjoying being back. Phillip McArdle.Version: 2.2

Quite good appNice science magazine with very interesting articles. And I can watch from different items, iPhone or iPad the same purchase.Version: 2.0.1
