Shakespeare’s Sonnets for Positive User Reviews

The SonnetsI bought this App having read an enthusiastic article about it in the Culture section of the Sunday Times of 19th August. I am aware that it is an overused word, but the only thing I can say is that it is just awesome! Brilliant in every way - in concept, in execution, in production, in sound quality, visually, intellectually. The performances are excellent, the commentaries first class. A particular delight is Don Paterson's sense of humour and unstuffiness! Well done to all concerned. A lifetime of pleasure ensues..Version: 1.0.0

BrilliantA great use of the iPad to bring Shakespeare to life. I especially enjoy the Arden notes being easily accessible as well as being able to look at the Quarto. Absolutely worth the cost..Version: 1.0.0

Wonderful Resource From Touch PressYet again, Touch Press have come up with another winner. These developers have certainly set the gold standard for interactive educational apps. Fantastic resource for a teacher or student of Shakespeare. Fantastic app for the Shakespeare lover. Great brace of Shakespearian actors who do beautiful renditions of these beloved sonnets. Some would consider Touch Press’s apps to be too pricey, but they are worth every single cent. Brilliant!.Version: 1.0.1

ExcellentThis is a landmark title with all the customary polish you expect from Touch Press. The key to this are filmed performances of all the sonnets by many acclaimed actors and poets, I nearly dropped the IPad in amazement to see Sir Patrick Stewart here. I must admit Fiona Shaw is the best reader, its a missed opportunity she wasn't featured more. The performances are linked to synchronised line by line readings from the poems which have detailed scholarly notes and textual analysis by Arden Press. Considering how difficult the poems are the commentary by Don Paterson is highly amusing. You can actually view the earliest quatro printing of the poems and watch experts give there impressions of the poems. If you love Shakespeare and poetry or are studying the sonnets at school this is absolutely essential. It shows the incredible potential of the IPad in the hands of great imaginative developers. For the price of £10 you are getting three books in one, The Arden Shakespeare, the filmed sonnets and the Quatro..Version: 1.0.0

Liszt SonataA brilliant app. Mind blowing performance by Stephen Hough. Having the score on the page adds to the enjoyment. Sound reproduction on my IPad Air is excellent..Version: 1.0.4

Worth every pennyWhat an Aladdin's cave of delights. It's hard to know which bits to praise the most - there are so very many. The performances are invariably superb - and poems are so much clearer and enjoyable when you listen to an insightful performer than just reading them off the page. And Don Paterson's Commentary explains in a wonderfully accessible way what is going on - so if you thought poetry was too "hard" for you, get ready for this world to be opened up for you - all the hard work has been done, so you can just sit back and listen and enjoy the show. And if you are not familiar with Don Paterson you are in for a treat - humour and insight rolled into one. And of course the Arden notes give you chapter and verse on everything there is to know, so even the most demanding study needs to look no further. I have never had so much pleasure from an app, or from Shakespeare for that matter. And I have so much more of it to explore - I look forward to settling down with it each evening and continuing its story. Just buy it. And give it to all your friends..Version: 1.0.0

Astonishing and revolutionaryThis app brings Bill S. to life like nothing else in a very long time. HIGHLY recommend this to anyone who hopes to understand or appreciate the power of the English language to communicate, to astound, to inform, to make you cry. This is the real deal. Make your kids learn to read it, understand it , then memorize it!! This is the REAL deal.....Version: 1.0.0

Thank you Andrew MarrThis app alone makes the I pad worth every penny.Simple but brilliant in concept and polished in production. I read some of the sonnets back in the fifties and from time to time have come back to them over the years. Now they are not just words to be read but I am in a theatre watching the greatest actors of the day performing just for me. Thank you, thank you.Brilliant Bob Thomas.Version: 1.0.0

A revelation! This app is exquisite! Lots of wonderful features and incisive, insightful discussions by experts. Don Paterson offers a highly entertaining commentary. And of course the readings themselves (from established and not so well known figures) are terrific, bringing old favourites to life while throwing light on some of the more unfamiliar poems. All in all, a joy to behold - great value too!.Version: 1.0.0

CivilizedWhenever I walk into a room and see everyone glued to their smart phones, I fear that technology is turning humanity into a bunch of morons. This app proves that when used properly, technology can bring civilization to a higher level. Everything about this app is absolutely perfect. These poems have never been so accessible and enjoyable. It's like having a private troupe of Shakespearean actors to recite sonnets whenever you feel in the mood, and a roomful of professors to explain them..Version: 1.0.0

GreatIt's absolutely great!.Version: 1.0.0

Impressive! This is an amazing collection of high quality videos of talented actors reciting the sonnets, the sonnets themselves with academic notations and analysis as well as facsimiles of the originals. Truly a gift to those who love Shakespeare and want to share him with others. Money well spent!.Version: 1.0.0

Just wonderfulThis app is a thing of beauty. I'm a huge Shakespeare fan, but I've always struggled a bit with the sonnets and found them much less accessible than the plays. This is a beautiful introduction, the videos are wonderful and add so much to the text. The commentary is fascinating and amusing. This app is essential!.Version: 1.0.0

SuperbI studied the Sonnets ages ago, have several editions which I dip into now... But then my interest fades. This immaculate app brings the Sonnets to full life. Having a learned commentary beside a text you hear being acted is a revelation. Dan Patterson's commentary is great..Version: 1.0.0

Well Worth the PriceThe app in engaging and quite entertaining..Version: 1.0.0

If you are a Shakespeare fan this App is for youThere are many virtues of this interactive multimedia edition a poetry lover or Shakespeare fan will appreciate. Sonnets are read by accomplished Shakespeare actors; notes are from a renowned Shakespearean scholar; and the edition is based on one of the best publishers of Shakespeare's work: The Arden Shakespeare. There other thoughtful touches also, it appears the publisher spared no effort to put out this wonderful multimedia edition. If you like the Bard's poetry I assure you, you cannot do better..Version: 1.0.0

EssentialI've been exploring this app relentlessly since I bought it. It's completely enthralling. I especially love the scholarly explanations and how some of the scholars completely disagree. Some apps may have edited those differences out to make everything conform to one viewpoint. But those scholarly differences really illustrate the depth of the sonnets' complexity. I can't imagine a better way to spend $13..Version: 1.0.0

BeautifulA treasure trove, if you like Shakespeare or want to know him better this is the app to go..Version: 1.0.4

Such stuff as dreams are made on ...My idea of happiness. A beautiful, portable volume of Shakespeare's sonnets read by a company of top actors. Just delightful to look at, and to listen to, and worth every penny..Version: 1.0.4

AmazingSteven frys reading is absolutely superb..Version: 1.0.0

Inspiring, creative, informativeI don't write reviews, especially for apps with hundreds of reviews already, but this app deserves it. It needs more reviews, it needs more support. Applications like this are what makes the iPad such an incredible piece of technology. I've never been that into poetry, but I am somewhat literary-minded, and I must say that this application has opened my mind to a world I've only barely entered, though I now desire immersion. The performances are spectacular. Emotions portrayed are deep-felt and descriptive. The notes are very clear, and help me to understand every single aspect of the poem without flooding me with references and other less important information for someone not so interested in the scholarly aspects. To watch the performances and look at the original publication, complete with words I never would have known how to pronounce, provides me with a feeling I never could recreate on my own. It is 100% unique to this application, and it is a feeling I appreciate far more than I could express in this review. Here's what I think: if you are even slightly interested in poetry, invest in this application. Of course it's great for those who already love poetry, but if you've been thinking about it for a while and hadn't been able to decide which app to buy, get this one. This company provides only the highest quality applications, and are truly reinventing the way we read poetry. Worth every penny and so, so much more. I will recommend to everyone I know who can access the Apple app store, and will look into buying more of their apps..Version: 1.0.0

Awesome app!Great way to experience Shakespeare's work; refreshing and intuitive, a joy to use. A+, will use daily..Version: 1.0.0

Brilliant!!!!Worth every penny, this is one of the most amazing apps you'll ever see. It reinforces my reasons for loving my iPad. Brilliantly made and polished and performed. I can't say enough about it. One suggestion I would make: to be able to watch/listen to just my favorites list all the way through..Version: 1.0.0

Magnificent! This has to be the most humongous app ever which is a necessary downside to keeping it on an iPad that doesn't have the most memory. But that aside, it is beautifully done. My next iPad will have all the memory available. This app alone is worth doing that!.Version: 1.0.4

Perfect presentationEvery single pixel of TouchPress's latest iPad app just oozes care and attention to detail. Each sonnet is lovingly accompanied by a beautiful reading by a Shakespearean professional, from actors to poets and voice coach extraordinaire Cicely Berry CBE. As well as each line highlighted as it is read, the Arden Shakespeare notes and the (frequently hilarious) commentary by Don Paterson brings an extra dimension of understanding to Shakespeare's poetry. If you particularly like a sonnet, you can send links to friends (they'll see a copy of the video which doubles as an ad for the app, along with the sonnet text). It is the "Perspectives" section which completes this app, though. Videos (and transcripts) of experts looking at the Sonnets in historical context, from examination of the form to a very interesting look at "original pronunciation", or how scholars now believe Shakespeare and his contemporaries would have delivered the lines we know so well today. The whole section helps illuminate appreciation of all of Shakespeare's output, not just his poetry..Version: 1.0.0

Extraordinary! What a wonderful app. This is going to provide hours of entertainment. I can't wait to show my dad - he may need to get an iPad for this!.Version: 1.0.0

Shakespeare's sonnets from touch pressThe most expensive app I've bought and worth every ducat. Used to pack a battered copy of the sonnets in my suitcase every time I travelled. Now this comes with me. Great company. A joy..Version: 1.0.4

Mindblowing!I love this app! The facsimile edition, useful notes, the sonnets read by different people, including Patrick Stewart, David Tennant, Stephen Fry etc. Ben Crystal even read one sonnet in the original (reconstructed) pronunciation! The app is huge (over 1Gb), so I recommend downloading it using the wired connection and not wifi..Version: 1.0.0

Best app everThis is an amazing app on Shakespeare's sonnets. Each sonnet is performed beautifully by well known people, and you can even have the words side by side as they read. You can also view the text on its own, bring up Arden notes, and view a facsimile reproduction from the first original publication of the sonnets. If you just enjoy Shakespeare's sonnets, or you want to learn more about them and even perhaps how best to perform them, then this app is the best, and with the interactive way in which you can read, listen and watch, it makes it better than a book. Highly recommend this app to anyone with an interest in Shakespeare. I love it!!.Version: 1.0.2

StunningThis is a brilliant comprehensive app for anyone who loves Shakespeare's Sonnets. The performances by Stephen Fry, David Tenant and Patrick Stewart were among the most spectacular. My only disappointment was that my favourite sonnet (138) was not read very well. But this is really an incredibly minor issue and did not detract from the app at all!.Version: 1.0.0

An app worthy of the BardThe extraordinary thing about this app is that there is literally more reference material, comment, first folio pictures and actors than you can shake a quill at. That before the simply stunning performances of the actors involved in the readings of these fabulous and unique sonnets. It's a gold-mine of poetry and reference and I have already trawled its depths many times. I am on my second pass through the sonnets and have tweeted every single one on a daily basis. Each time I get to a new one I have to read the fascinating details from both Arden and Don Patterson (who put the other commentaries together) and compare the way the sonnet appeared by looking at the first folio pics. I can also make notes of my own and make up a favourites list. I then marvel at the performers. I am not sure how the publishers were able to get together the distinguished groups of actors they did but the bonus of having them on this app is second to none. It's well worth the price and is in every sense worthy of Shakespeare's efforts to describe his feelings of love, loss, beauty, age, time, history and much much more..Version: 1.0.1

Thank you for including text!Thank you for including text ! For me and all HI lovers of Shakesphere's sonnets, life became better!.Version: 1.0.0

FantasticEvery doubt anyone has ever had in the past of Shakespeare's genius are cut down by the stunning quality and insight of these sonnets ..Version: 1.0.0

Perfect! This app is a dream come true. Thank you Touch Press!.Version: 1.0.0

FabulousThis is a terrific app for an educator, student, or actor. The treatment of the sonnets is both thoughtful and playful in both performance and commentary, and I feel that the app has made me fall in love with the work all over again..Version: 1.0.0

A masterpieceThis app is so enthralling, I spent my first evening with it simply selecting an actor and a sonnet and listening, just listening and following the text. Every reading was heartfelt and moving. In these fresh interpretations, in a delicious variety of voices, it is easy to understand why Shakespeare's Sonnets are immortal. I fell in love all over again with the poetry and with the sheer beauty of the English language. You will too. The elegantly integrated commentaries are fascinating and informative. To anyone intimidated or put off by Shakespeare, I heartily recommend Don Paterson's analyses of each sonnet: candid, witty and spot on. Bravo. There is much that grinds a person down in this day and age. This project makes me not only glad to have an iPad, it renews my faith in the human spirit..Version: 1.0.0

Shakespeare fanI wish I had this app at high school when studying the sonnets...it would have more sense and be so interesting! Anyway better late than never...I love the performances, beautifully acted and filmed. Can't wait for more like these..Version: 1.0.0

AstonishingAn incredible learning resource. The layout and functionality is a dream, and the content is a rare treat for amateurs and academics alike. The interactivity sets it apart from any other edition of the Sonnets. Personally would have liked some more Original Pronunciation; Ben Crystal is a marvel. Highly, highly recommended. Had the best commute of my life today!.Version: 1.0.3

Brilliant but boy, those updatesThis is a beautiful brilliant app, as are the others. Buy them all. But beware the updates, they are as large as the original app but take much longer to download if you have skinny broadband. So only four stars because a ‘few weeks’ do not warrant an update!.Version: 1.0.4

WowNot much else to say but Wow. Not only do we have the complete text of the sonnets. Not only do we have the full Arden introduction and notes by the formidable Katharine Duncan Jones. Not only do we have wonderful readings of every single one of the sonnets, on video, by some of the finest actors of our time (Patrick Stewart, Simon Callow, Cicely Berry, Dominic West, Fiona Shaw). Not only do we have on-screen commentary by notables like the aforesaid Duncan Jones and James Shapiro, Ben Crystal, and others. But we have all this in a well-designed and easily navigable app. So - just Wow. A labor of love for all concerned, with us as the beneficiaries..Version: 1.0.1

WonderfulThere are so many ways you can enjoy this - listening to the actors whilst reading the text; watching the actors perform; reading the original digitised publication; reading the comprehensive notes. You can add your own notes and bookmark favourite sonnets. You can find a sonnet by keyword. You can search for all the sonnets performed by a particular actor. It is a joy!.Version: 1.0.3

Wonderful collectionI can't think of a better way to enjoy the Sonnets than read by these wonderful actors. "Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer's Day", read by David Tennant, just made my Valentine's Day..Version: 1.0.2

Fantastic appThis well-made app is a wonderful way to read and listen to Shakespeare's poetry and is well worth it's price.Version: 1.0.4

Stunning all-purpose Sonnet toolIf the sonnets are of any interest to you (and they should be) this gem is a wonderful first resource: a combination of video/audio performances synced to the onscreen text, historical and literary commentary (also linked to the text, with copious references to other works, as well as to other sonnets-linked, of course!), a favorites list, a space for my notes, and the kicker, a Quarto, also linked and cross referenced! This is my first stop when I undertake the journey of a new sonnet. A slick, attractive, intuitive and well thought out interface makes it a breeze to use, with nearly all its many features available no matter where you are in the app. Great design and content make this a no brainier for anyone needing an accessible introduction, or a deeper understanding of, these often overlooked masterworks..Version: 1.0.2

Amazing, bravo!I've learned so much, mostly how to enjoy the sonnets..Version: 1.0.5

Thank you!I absolutely love this app..Version: 1.0.0

Very impressiveIt's so good though a bit expensive..Version: 1.0.0

Brilliant - innovative - beautifulThis app has reawakened my interest in Shakespeare and open my eyes not just to these marvellous Sonnets but also to the wonderful resources available for us to learn at any age. The content seems to me to be just right, the performances beautifully understated and timeless and the app runs smoothly. Most of all it makes appreciating these works and reflecting on them a great and varied pleasure. The only thing that doesn't work is the Write a Review button (sort of works in landscape on iPAd).Version: 1.0.2

Shakespeare's sonnetsA wonderful resource. Every teacher of English should have it! Dr Who and Captain Picard read poetry!.Version: 1.0.4

Worth Every PennyConsider it 2 HD movie rentals. It won't be the app you bought cheap but only used few times..Version: 1.0.0

FantasticWhat can I say but that this is a fantastic app. The content is compelling; I did not want to stop exploring the sonnets. The video and audio portions bring the poems to life while the background commentary and notes make the sonnets interesting and accessible. This app is an example of how good digital books can be. I only hope we see more!.Version: 1.0.0

Terrific presentation of great poetryI've been going through the sonnets with Patrick Stewart's social media presentation of them. Then I found this app and added that to the mix. Patrick is enthusiastic but unpolished, so these very polished and professional readings make for a nice complement. I have found just a very few readings disappointing, but the rest are excellent, and some are brilliant. I was just this evening blown away by James Shapiro's rendition of Sonnet 138..Version: 1.0.7

MasterfulA masterpiece! Worth the purchase if you're a Shakespeare sonnet lover. Each actor's rendition is entertaining and moving. Sir Patrick Stewart is my personal favorite. Highly recommended!.Version: 1.0.5

GreatShakespeare's Sonnets is excellent. It is visually rich, has a great deal of information that is easily accessed, and the videos give these poems a kind of freshness. Each poem comes with Arden notes and also commentary by a noted Bardolator. Finally, there are troves of articles about the sonnet form and more. This is well worth the money..Version: 1.0.0

Amazing! What a wonderful app: scholarly yet entertaining and packed full of features, all for a relatively low cost. I wholeheartedly recommend this app to existing Shakespeare lovers and soon-to-be Shakespeare lovers..Version: 1.0.0

My Favorite AppThis is absolutely my most favorite app!!!! Please make it available on iphone again..Version: 1.0.6

Love every minuteThis is a quality product and I just love it. The actors reciting the sonnets give impeccable delivery of the lines, there are accompanying explanatory notes and other extras. This app brings the sonnets clarity and meaning hard to find on your own. Strongly recommended..Version: 1.0.4

How could it be better? You've got the Shakespearean actors and scholars reading the bard's sonnets, along with a plethora of extras. It just couldn't get any better. Bravo and thanks to the creators of this fine app. Come on, you other owners of this app, get in there and write the kind of reviews this app deserves!.Version: 1.0.2
