✓ SurprisingI wasn't expecting too much out of this game. Downloaded it on a whim simply because I wanted to try something different. I got just that. When I started, I had no idea what to expect but the gameplay was unbelievably simple. This made this game so fun to play! I was hooked. There was no real dialogue nor any background information. There really was no need for it. When they say less is more, it definitely rings true with Don't Look Back. It reels you in with the curious and it keeps you going with everything that follows. The only con I would mention is that the jump and shoot buttons were so frustratingly close to each other. I'm not sure if it's part of the game design to add a bit of challenge but that was the only thing that bothered me. Not too much though. I beat the game in one sitting :) Other than that, this was my first game review. That's how interesting it was. Kudos Mr. Cavanagh. A truly enjoyable game..Version: 1.0

At first I didn't get the story, but then I realized at the end, it was based off a Greek myth, where a man travelled into Hades after his new wife died from a snake bite on their wedding day to ask Hades to return her. He said that he should go back out of Hades, his wife will follow, but if he looks back to her before they are completely out of Hades, his wife will disappear and be returned to the underworld. He did as he was told, but when he saw the light of day, he couldn't wait any longer so he looked back to see his wife one last time as she disappeared forever. The story in the game is a bit different, and you should definitely play it! The controls confused me sometimes, but that is not unusual for me because I confuse left and right sometimes. The game is free, so it is worth a try, I think it's a game anyone could like..Version: 1.3

✓ This is a MUST-PLAY! An undiscovered classicThis grim monochrome game starts out a casual, mario-esque, 8-bit platformer, and winds up a beautiful retelling of a classic Greek myth! Without using a word of dialogue or more than 10 seconds of cutscene, Terry Cavanagh crafts a beautiful story with the gameplay mechanics. (I won't spoil anything, but there's a reason why it's called "Don't Look Back"). He also uses the games challenging, almost-but-not-quite frustrating difficulty to represent the main character's struggle through what must only be Hell. The ending has an incredible twist that takes a little deep thinking to really understand. The gameplay itself, though simple, is very difficult, yet satisfying. Good reflexes alone won't get you through it. You'll have to look at the field and strategize the bet way to get through it, adding a puzzle element to the game. The game is so short you can get through it in one sitting, but it's the perfect length for this title. The graphics are just good enough to tell the story but they work well for this game. If you love classic Atari games or games that make you think, this little gem is for you!.Version: 1.0

✓ PerfectThis game is a work of art. I literally just downloaded it and I already beat it. It's very hard, but I like a challenge, as long as it's not like unfair Mario challenging. The ending blew my mind. A ghost story that for once is not about horror. It's a tale of sorrow. At the end, I felt a chill run up my spine, as I know that history forever repeats itself, as it will every time you play this game from start to finish. Actually, the ending in a way reminds me of the Maria ending of silent hill 2, where history does repeat itself. I want to give this game 6 starts, but I can only give it 5. Don't let the simplistic design fool you, Don't Look Back has a number of platform and enemy puzzles that are, like itself, much more difficult than they appear. Be prepared to die. Lots. However, checkpoints are frequent to balance out the numerous inevitable failures. Even though the landscape is merely red and black, the audio succeeds in immersing the player, from the orchestral boss music, to the crunch of treaded grass. That is not to say that the game world isn't beautiful in its own unique way. You will encounter literally pitch black caves, harsh pitfalls, and sheer cliffs and many inhabitants of the bleak land. The story is charming and strange like no other. Don't Look Back is a relatively short game (I finished it in about 30 minutes, and there were many deaths and retries) but this does not detract from it at all. This platformer deserves much more than a 5 star rating, and even this review doesn't do it justice. My message is simple: if you haven't already, GET THIS GAME NOW. At the conservative price of Free, there is nothing stopping you..Version: 1.0

I hate how people are complaining about a couple of frame rate drops and the inability to save. I completed the game in under 20 mins in one sitting, so it really isn't a problem. Challenging levels, wonderful music, a beautifully simplistic style and a haunting story make this the Journey or The Unfinished Swan the App Store has been waiting for. This game has a lot to love about it, the reference to old Atari 2600 games, the story, the difficulty and by difficulty I mean this game is quite the challenge. It’s not frustratingly difficult like many modern indie games but it’s a good difficulty that makes you feel very satisfied when you complete a level or a boss. I have completed this game many times over, and the game almost never gets old! It’s even more fun to attempt to speed run this game. But with all games they have their flaws, for example the controls are very clunky and awkward most of the time the buttons are very small and if the developer adds a controller customizer that would be great. Also, the game is very short. I was expecting a load of bosses and new enemies but instead I only got three boss fights with one of them being extremely short. This game was tough but because of the limited animation catching on was easy enough which helped maintain the fun factor. My all-time favorite movie is “Apocalipto” by Mel Gibson; and the fast pace and mission driven concept of this game made me fall in love. ✓ Great emotional old school experienceFrom the moment you enter "don't look back" you're presented with a feeling of bitterness, loneliness and death. The starting screen tells you all you need to know, yet leaves the question of what you're exact goal is. The atmosphere and music painted through your journey really sets a specific tone and a feeling of uncertainty. Emotion, something a lot of new "old school" games don't know how to fully present. The gameplay gives you the platform feeling you've been dying for in packaged in a mobile game, requiring extreme precision in most areas. Luckily the dev has printed the on screen buttons in near perfection, giving you a pleasant set of controls with out the feeling of lusting for a physical game pad or controller. By the time you reach the end of your quest, you'll be left with a shocking unexpected answer, but also lingering in your mind is another question. I was interested in this game for several reasons when I first opened the app. The monochrome visuals were really cool, the music was good and fit the style of the game, it was very difficult (snake with bat and spider at the same time), and I wanted to know what happened at the end. It's amazing to think how little clues can lead the player to actually study theories and mythos to find the meaning of the game themselves. It took one one glance at the tombstone before bunches of theories and predictions started popping into my mind. I truly loved this game and VVVVVV (which Terry also made). However, the controls are bad... even for a touch screen. I'm sorry I said it but that is one of the only problems with this game. However, as I have said before, this game is a great one that I would recommend to any seasoned gamer who isn't afraid of a challenge..Version: 1.2
✓ Really solid but has one major flaw.This game is the perfect example of less is more. It may not have a complex plot, characters, or look like a movie, but it’s solid run and gun gameplay is really solid. There are a handful of flaws, such as its length. It can be completed at around 10 minutes for newer players, but speed runs of the game finish it in only 4. But i can’t complain too much, it is free. And no ads, so that’s nice. ✓ You go Terry Cavanaugh!A hidden gem! I've played a couple of Terry Cavanaugh's other games and loved them. Super Hexagon was a lot of fun and VVVVVV kept me up waaaay past bedtime. This is the first game of his where I've felt like the story shined above the gameplay. The others were exemplars of solid control, gameplay, and design. Don't Look Back offers something a little different. The control isn't as tight, the level design isn't as solid, but the experience as a whole shines. I believe that is due to the integration of story, portraying themes of love, loss, remembrance, and grief in a simple and beautiful way. It is the video game equivalent of a haiku, conveying its message succinctly with a deep understanding of the form. Please keep making games, Terry Cavanaugh. ✓ Great game and storyThis is a great little free gem. It has that quality to it much like Sword & Sworcery you can find on the App Store. Like that game, the graphics are 8 bit, but the story and sound tells all. But unlike that game, no words are ever uttered. Very similar to limbo. This game can be challenging at some parts, but doable. I enjoy this, much like the games of my youth where things were not handed to you. For instance, the first boss of sorts took me a while to figure out how to damage it. After I killed this wolf/ dog/ cerebus boss I felt like I had achieved something. ✓ Wonderful, haunting gem of a gameJust a wonderful, sometimes incredibly hard, game. Took me maybe 20 minutes to get through, as I died 50 times on some screens. But there is basically no death penalty so when you die you are where you left off with no load time. The two bosses are nice little challenges where you keep trying and get better. My only suggestion might be to make the button touch targets a bit bigger. There are several incredibly hard areas but I don't think the difficulty should be changed, you feel like you accomplished something when you do make it through. ✓ I want more!!!I know this game is meant to be a short game. I think that's one reason why this game is so wonderful. DLB is a game that takes me back to the Atari days. It's a simple pixel side scroller adventure with jump and shoot controls taking advantage of the iPhones touch screen. You climb ropes, jump trenches, and shoot creatures. DLB has a wonderful story and don't let it's modest look fool you. There are parts in the game that will take time to solve. Some may breeze through with only a few mistakes but most will try and try again till you get it right. Then after you figured out everything and just learn to master it, the game ends. Leaving you with a pleasure knowing you finished it. Myself was left with another feeling. I wanted more. I'm sure the developer went on to work on bigger things but I'm hoping for a extra stage or second story.
