Foreign Affairs Magazine for Negative User Reviews
✓ Be warnedYou will not be able to stop your subscription after it ends, even if you disable auto-renew. And even after calling and having them understand that i did not wished to renew, not only they charged me again 2 days later, but they changed my subscription to paper and digital, instead of the cheaper digital only subscription that i had before. This is fraud pure and simple..Version: 2.3.1
✓ App doesn’t keep your place in articlesIf I am reading an article and set my phone down for a minute, when I come back and pick it up again the article jumps back to the beginning, forcing me to manually scroll back to where I was. Very annoying. Using iPhone 12 mini with face recognition to unlock the phone each time I resume. Seems like this should be easily fixed - please do..Version: 3.7
✓ Great content, poor UXIf, like me, you’re a semi-distracted person who frequently toggles to other apps—Spotify, iMessage, etc—while reading articles on here, you’ll be sorely disappointed by the UX. For some reason, leaving the app for more than 15 seconds results in either you losing your place in the article you were reading (i.e., you return to find yourself at the start of the article) or the app restarting itself such that you’re not longer even in the article you were reading. This is the news / magazine app I’ve come across with this issue and it is the #1 reason I rarely read FA articles despite paying for a subscription..Version: 3.7
✓ Paid for iPad Foreign Affairs App but cannot access magazine!Bought iPad Foreign Affairs app but still need login to get in. Foreign Affairs in the USA does not reply to queries. Avoid this App until Foreign Affairs make it clear how to access the magazine via the iPad! You have been warned. Big con! Typical!.Version: 1.0.5
✓ Audio Doesn’t Work. Shuts Down ApplicationThe read aloud audio does not always work on the mobile IPhone App. I may receive mixed feedback about my hardware/software update, but they are always up to the latest versions. The Jan/Feb 2020 articles shut down the entire application when trying to use the audible version instead of text..Version: 2.0
✓ Download speeds are horribleThe content is just awesome. The app experience, just horrible. Real shame..Version: 1.2
✓ Great but doesn't open when offlineLove the app on the whole, but see above. Not normally an issue as have LTE, but out of the country just now and disappointed I can't open it unless I've got wifi access. On a Mini. Navigation is fluid and logical, with a prioritisation of the point of the app: long-form reading. So not as fancy as some other news apps, but it doesn't need to be..Version: 1.01
✓ App Limits SubscriptionI immediately found myself in the help section trying to register and log in, which apparently can't be done without a hard copy. If you purchase the mag from the app before having a hard copy, you wont have an account number and cannot register and log in. I cannot access my subscription on my pc when I don't have my iPad. It will allow me to register on their website, but requires that I buy a second subscription to have the same content on my pc, which I can access via the iPad browser anyhow. I feel cheated..Version: 1.0
✓ Update neededThis app desperately needs an update for better experience to access your materials. Even as a subscriber, trying to read is frustrating having to login all the time, and not recognising myself as an subscriber, showing need to purchase issues....Version: 1.1
✓ Not well doneViewer is not intuitive at all, feels clunky.Version: 1.0.4
✓ Horrible app and customer serviceThis app is a fraction of what it should be. I haven't been able to download the new issue on time for months now and still can't get the most recent one. Moreover, when you're on the app homepage and want to read a featured article, the app makes you log in for each article you read despite already being logged in on the app itself. So, reading eight featured articles require eight individual log-ins. Ridiculous. It's a shame such stellar content is drug down by such poor digital management. It's ironic that they're covering the advancement of technology (the most recent issue is on automation) while simultaneously failing at the most basic automation themselves. Also, I've called them 5 times about this issue and emailed them. No fix yet. Just the same old "yeah, we know there's a problem, we'll fix it" runaround for months now. Horrible customer service..Version: 1.1
✓ Not a Full SubscriptionApp does not make it clear that this subscription does not include desktop access to FA. As a result, any attempt to access it outside the iOS app forces you to re-subscribe for an additional subscription, even if you're already paying for one through the app store. This makes no sense, given that you also cannot transfer subscriptions from the app to desktop. This is important since you can only access archival articles in desktop mode..Version: 3.0
✓ No accessCan’t access the articles even when I’m subscribed. Please fix it..Version: 2.2
✓ Great content. App needs refining1. App needs work. I have this app on my iPhone. To download multiple issues you have to tap ‘Get’ which takes us to the issue. This is not useful when I have to download multiple issues at once - for example when I am changing devices or even when I want to look at a few issues at the same time. Tapping ‘Get’ should start download in the background like it does when you tap ‘Get’ on the App Store. 2. Scrap book seems to store the whole article (correct me if I am wrong please). Would be useful to have a highlighter function which highlights paras/quotes and stores those under the scrap book. Thanks.Version: 2.1
✓ IPad App CrashIt does not upload the new content.I’m sure there’s nothing wrong with my Internet connection please fix it.Version: 2.3.1
✓ Poor supportSame problem. I've subscribed, I have no access and they are not answering my queries..Version: 1.0.5
✓ Poor appAltough the magazine quality is really great the supporting app looks like designed and coded in the pré internet era.The digital team should get some inspiration from the economist/ ft/ bloomberg any other news app is better and more versatile. Sorry but someone should tell you this.. regards Cyrille.Version: 1.1
✓ Bad navigationBad navigation — if you leave the app for a moment, and then get back to the article you were reading, you’ll be back at the headline each time. Would be good if the app froze the article, especially if the absence lasts only a couple of seconds..Version: 3.9
✓ Keeps asking me to subscribe. Not opening within the AppNot intuitive and keeps directing one to the webpage to sign in. Keeps asking me to sign in and subscribe even though I have prescribed through iTunes..Version: 2.2
✓ Unable to download issues even with subscription log inI logged in and out, reinstalled app, and still unable to get the issues for download.Version: 1.1
✓ Awkward reading and challenging audio experienceThe content is great. The app is pretty terrible: it returns to the home screen every time I open it, which creates extra steps to access the magazine content. It's hard to tell the difference between "recent" and magazine content. Do they overlap? It feels like I have to work extra hard to reorient myself to where I was in my reading of the magazine every time I open the app. I also use audio a lot and the audio player is just a complete disappointment. It's unclear which pieces are available in audio until you bring up the audio list, but the audio browser is separate from the article browser so it's hard to know which article your want to listen to. The app doesn't save your place if you leave part way through listening too an article, so I'm constantly starting again or just giving up. The audio doesn't visualize where in the article you are as you go so it's hard to take notes or switch from audio to reading without a lot of work. Finally I would LOVE it if the app allowed me to highlight and take notes in it. Thank you..Version: 2.2
✓ A media company that cannot deliverContent doesn't matter if there are repeated frustrations accessing the material and clumsy integration of web and app security. It's an incentive to cancel your subscription..Version: 1.1
✓ Great Magazine, Dumpy AppLove the reporting in this magazine. It is always top-notch. The app leaves MUCH to be desired. It isn’t robust enough to include updates from the homepage for breaking stories. I really wish this were a bit more user friendly as well. It requires very fast download speeds to get the whole magazine on your device. This works well when you have high-speed internet, but is problematic when you are abroad. I hope future updates will include some more robust features..Version: 2.1
✓ Bad app! Bad customer service! This app is shameful. It seems to be impossible to login to a current account, even though we have a digital subscription. It asks for the email address for our account, and then it says "this email address is already being used." Yeah, of course it is, I'm not making an account, I'm trying to get login to my account. And I can't get in touch with customer service to get help. When content providers make it hard to access accounts that are paid for, they push consumers to stealing the product..Version: 1.1
✓ Please fix resolution on IPad ProWe have to pinch to get the resolution fixed..Version: 1.1
✓ Great Content, but Buggy App and no Customer SupportIt’s difficult to beat the quality of FA’s content, unfortunately the app is prone to not recognizing paid, active subscriptions and to prompting for additional payment for some bi-monthly issues in a way that cannot be fixed by restoring purchases or even deleting and reinstalling the app. Customer service is also entirely unresponsive. They just flat out do not respond to emails. The issues are only $9.99, so it’s not a fortune, but randomly being required to double-pay to access content for which you’ve already purchased a subscription, and to have no means of addressing it through an active customer service function is....frustrating. Love the content, but buyer beware on the app..Version: 2.2
✓ Does not workThe app does work? Happy not purchase. When you fix it I may subscribe..Version: 1.0.5
✓ Improving Foreign AffairsLess leftist bias.Version: 3.7
✓ Good but articles way too longIt is a shame that a so respectable publication doesn’t apply the well known principle of writing. Go straight to the point. Some articles take more than 30 mins to read. It will be great to have shorter analysis..Version: 3.5.3
✓ SubscriptionBought a subscription through iTunes. Not able to connect the subscription to an email or to my apple account and I can’t use any benefits that accompany a subscription. Help pls.Version: 2.2
✓ Flaws with updateApp was clunky but worked previously, I have paid for a subscription. But for some reason since update one issue I previously paid for and downloaded is showing the request URL is not found rather than articles. I want to finish reading that issue before reading current one!.Version: 1.2
✓ No login detailsI bought an yearly subscription , however I don’t have login data or any chance to set up a login. The subscription is confirmed and everything looks alright, however I’m asked to pay again for every issue ( or to log in 🙃). No luck with the customer service either. I’m sure the articles are great , but I found it strange that the app implementation is so poor and the lack of customer service support..Version: 2.1
✓ One of my least favourite appsI can’t stand this app. The process of a new issue appearing is just useless. Case in point- Mar/Apr issue has been put for days if not a week already, yet nothing is on the app. Also the FA website password rules are terrible - what is so hard for them to accept characters like an exclamation mark?! I have tried more than once contacting them - virtually no response..Version: 2.3
✓ I need to buy a new iPad to read this magazineVery irritating that I can no longer read this on my older iPad. my subscription is useless now. Any suggestions?? I was planning to upgrade but!!!!.Version: 1.0.3
✓ App missing important featuresIf you happen to switch to another app while you’re reading and come back, your reading location gets lost. Maybe you’ll get taken to the same article but your spot in that article gets lost. Articles don’t get downloaded if you save them. Wonderful magazine and the app generally works but those two features are rather important..Version: 3.7
✓ Fiction rather than analysisMost of the article are very bias, meaning the facts are skewed to fit the narrative..Version: 3.6
✓ Could be much moreWorks well as a reader for the journal, but navigating in the app is difficult and obtuse. No way to browse all past issues. Search doesn’t allow you to force exact string searching with quotation marks, so it’s practically useless. Searching for back issues with articles on “South China Sea” gives you every instance of south .or. China .or. sea going backwards from today. You have to swipe through dozens of screens to get back past 2018..Version: 1.2
✓ What happened to Landscape reading view? What happened to Landscape reading view?.Version: 3.0
✓ App does not recognize my digital subscriptionThe app recognizes me, but I cannot access new issues or my library. I emailed customer service, and they say they're working on the problem. It seems others have had this problem for a while. Great magazine, poor digital management. At the least, the magazine should send an email to all digital subscribers acknowledging the problem and a timeframe for the fix. It's ridiculous that this problem has gone on so long..Version: 1.1
✓ ITunesSubscribed through iTunes but won’t let me see thevarticlesbut won’t let me see the articles.Version: 2.2
✓ Mediocre AppWhile this app displays content beautifully, you can't enjoy it without struggling with the app's non-intuitive navigation tools. Whether you're trying to browse the library, an issue or an article, you must intuitively understand how to do so with these minimal tools OR divert your attention from the message in order to understand the medium. The Economist's app makes navigation intuitive for all readers. FA app developers: Observe The Economist app, learn from it, and get out of readers' way..Version: 1.2
✓ Great content -bad appAt the recommendation of one of my professors I purchased a subscription to Foreign Affairs. While browsing through the website is easy enough it is almost impossible to get through any articles on the app. The articles are in depth and often long but if I close the app and reopen it the app does not take me back to where I left off. The app instead takes me back to the main page and then I have to go back and find the article I was reading and hopefully remember where I left off. It has stymied my progress through a handful of articles and now I’m at the point that it just isn’t worth continuing to read on my iPhone or iPad because I know I may have to stop reading an article and will have to go through a whole process just to get back into the article..Version: 2.2
✓ Best content, worst app...Review updated 10 December upon release of “new” and “improved” app... This app should be an embarrassment to the Council on Foreign Relations. Period. New app is released in non-working order. Only two issues can be downloaded. All other issues require payment, even for a subscriber of decades. Links within the TOC of these issues are all dead: you cannot navigate for the underlying content. And the library of historical content has been decimated; only from 2016 is available. This is a bad joke. CFR, fire everyone involved with this effort and start again. What are you all thinking? ———— Best content in the category, worst app (by a wide margin) among all news publications available on iOS. Customer service is incompetent and completely useless. Why CFR doesn’t get its act together is simply beyond me. A great mystery of our time..Version: 1.2
✓ Don’t waste your time trying this AppThe App from the App Store has for two days given me a message to ‘try again soon.’ After six calls to customer support and resetting my pass word twice, I am no closer to being able to access my subscription on the iPad. (Maybe this works on the iPhone, but I doubt it.). I suspect the message is disinformation, which is bad practice. I advise staying with the content on the web if you need digital access, at least until they can figure this out. The motto of these developers seems to be, Move Fast and Break Your Face. By the way, what happened to the old fashioned concept that customer service people who are expected to support an offering should be involved in testing it? Assuming that there was a test plan of any kind, a big assumption..Version: 1.2
✓ Move to the leftThe steady decline of content with a particular leftist slant is very disturbing. You continue to miss the transformational change happening in the world. The publication has become marred in a status quo that mocks anybody that promotes change. You have consistently used leftist contributors (Stacy Abrams)to push the conversation left. The world order has become stagnant and you lambast President Trump for looking out for America in the world where Europe doesn’t want change. The Paris accords for example was a bad deal for America but a good deal for the Chinese. If you leftward, slant continues I will be forced to cancel my subscription. You treated President Obama like a saint because he was a nice guy and went along with the old boys club. His foreign policy was a complete disaster for America. Trump is more like the bull in the china shop, but it is good for the United States. Remember President Jackson was at first looked upon as boor and turned out to be a great president that changed the presidency. Regards, Paul Billman.Version: 2.2
✓ Like pulling teethI wish I could give a higher rating, but after spending an hour trying to make this app work on my iPad, I have to say something. I have an email, a password, and my account number but I cannot log in. I change my password — still no luck. It wants my “use name” but neither email nor account # works — I do have *have* a user name that I know of (and none shows on my account page). And now I have ... notifications! Great, where are they and what are they? Can find them! How can I make them go away? Mind numbing exercise in debugging an app when I would rather be reading that article..Version: 1.2
✓ Endless bashingI’ve been reading your magazine since I was 20 years of age. I used to enjoy reading this magazine that’s why I started subscribing. Now the endless President Trump bashing on every article it’s getting quiet old, especially when the facts don’t add up. After this year I won’t continue to subscribe anymore..Version: 1.2
✓ Why?Almost as useful as connecting directly to the website Website/browser can remember your login, but after registering still need to login? Website/browser can text and pictures - app version of website prevents me from doing this -- Why did they bother writing an app that simply degrades the website?.Version: 1.0.2
✓ Can’t loginWhen I try to login it says “sorry the login in temporarily unavailable. Please try again later”. I tried again and again for a couple days, but same message. I’m a paid subscriber but I can’t access the paid content. Disappointed!!.Version: 2.2
