Run Less Run Faster for Positive User Reviews

Great but...So glad this is finally available. No more having to lookup the FIRST tables on my kindle before runs. However I was really hoping that they would have included meter-to-mile pace conversions for the track repeats. I always have to lookup the conversions online before I do my speed work due to the way Garmin shows pace. Never quite understood why the book didn't include this. Also the app barks at you if you enter a marathon date inside of 16-weeks. If you run marathons with any frequency, it's rare that you find yourself training for a race that is 16 weeks out. Finally, make certain you put down Saturday as your race date even if your race is on Sunday, otherwise the app will throw your schedule off by one week (cut you short by one week). Other than that, it's a nice quick reference for your runs if you follow the FIRST system..Version: 1.0.1

Time saverLove that this app calculates paces for the FIRST runs. It was very time consuming to flip through the book to lay out a training plan. But, please add the 10 mile race plan from your web site to the app! Regarding some of the other reviewers...they need to read the book. This is a planning aid for those who are following a very specific training plan for performance improvement. You need to have a solid base built up before doing these plans...that is why it assumes you can do an 8 mile long run off the bat. If you can't, get yourself a couch to or beginner plan and come back to FIRST to do time goal oriented training after you have a few races under your belt..Version: 1.0.2

Great appJust got this, and am thrilled to have my workouts with me everywhere I go! I've been using this program for 4 years, and my book is getting kind of shabby :) My only complaint is that the workouts are given based on past performance times. I would prefer if you could also set them based on goal marathon times, like the plans in the back of the book..Version: 1.0.3

ComplimentsThis app compliments the book perfectly. It really makes it easier to look up the bespoke training elements for you..Version: 1.0.1

Essential running appI have read lots of books on running, but the one that's helped me the most (by far) is Run Less Run Faster. The app is a companion to the book, and for me is the single thing that has transformed my running. You put in your last 5K, 10k, HM, or FM time, and it gives you a bespoke 16 week training plan, with different targets for pace, intervals and distance. You improve by running three times a week. It's the bespoke plan that makes all the difference. Some people have knocked 20 minutes off of their marathon times using it. To explain the significance of the app, I need to talk briefly about the book. The book was written by some marathon runners / sports scientists who found they couldn't do the high mileage of most training plans, when they got into their 40s without getting injured. The end result was training plans for running only 3x per week, with 2 cross-training activities like cycling or swimming. The key, though, is that each of the runs has a purpose, and is challenging. The secret is the combination of distances and paces in the training plan, and they are set based on your last 5k, 10k, HM, FM times. This means the plan is bespoke for you, and achievable by you. That's why you improve so much. I bought the book on Kindle a few years ago, which was convenient to read, but once you want to do the training plans, became a pain, because you had to keep on looking up different charts which are hard to find in an electronic book. If you have a hard copy, it's much less of a problem, but even then, digging them out to work out the training plan is a pain. With the app, you enter your time, the date of the race you are working towards, and it's all calculated for you. Before I go for a run I just check it to see what the plan is and go. This app really takes the hassle out of keeping track of / working out the training plan..Version: 2.0.0

Great addition to excellent bookEasy to use app and a perfect companion to owners of the book. I always used to spend my time filling out my 16 week plan on a spreadsheet and storing it on my phone - not anymore! Having knocked my marathon PB down from 3:40 to 3:21, I shall certainly keep using this!.Version: 1.1.3

Good companion to bookThis is a good companion to the book and might even replace it if you already understand the principles in the book. To those frustrated by the supposedly too-demeaning opening long run: read the book. You are supposed to begin these programs with a base level of fitness. 8 miles is not too much to ask..Version: 1.1.2

Nice, but leaves some programs outThis app is a great, user-friendly version of all the tables in the RLRF book, which I’m getting started using. I plan to use the program for my next half and marathon. But for now I’m between races and I was hoping to use the 5K intermediate plan...and it’s not included, nor is the beginner plan. You’re pretty much out of luck using this app unless you’re no more than 16 weeks out from a race and you can run at least 5 miles already..Version: 2.0.1

Nice companion but unstable in iOS 11.2Great for calculations, but crashes every time I hit the “more” button. Can’t wait to train with this program though..Version: 2.0.1

Revising review/rating: Missing features July 4 2014I am revising my review 'missing features' posted on July 4, 2014. I am not able to delete or edit it. This app is great and does have the features I was looking for with the exception of one item. The app does show the final goal and can back into a goal on the calculated screen. I originally looked for these features on the start screen and training program schedule. The only other suggestion is to fill in the training criteria instead of referencing a page in the book..Version: 1.1.3

Very convenient app to go with a great book and program!Excellent programs and now this app just makes it so much easier!!! My times have improved dramatically this year (10km - 2min improvement to 37.30mins and 5km - 1min improvement to 18mins).Version: 1.1.3

Running To the Next Level!Great to see that it's now mobile. Whether running on the track/road or a treadmill, I can switch from minutes/mile to mph. It's really quick to switch between units. Love the speed workouts, the paces and having the cross-training workouts will take my fitness to the next level. This app is all I need to get faster!.Version: 1.0.1

Great app, very useful for the BEST training plan out there.Update: I would also like to see a summary screen that can be printed or emailed with all the weeks on one page. Would be helpful to pin up on the wall instead of constantly referencing the app. Either that or make the app more feedback/ goal oriented so it is worth referencing daily. I was just sitting down to do all the math, cross referencing tables, etc. for an upcoming marathon and get everything entered into my calendar when it occurred to me "I wonder if there's an app for that?" Sure enough the new FIRST companion app. Great! Thanks! One thing I would add is support for populating the calendar and/or viewing in a calendar format, setting which days are run days, etc. Also it would be helpful if selected race goal times populated on the setup page for a given calculated 5k pace. This would avoid flipping back and forth between setup and main screens..Version: 1.1.3

Nice companion app to bookThe app serves as a very nice companion app to the book. It serves its intended purpose well. The one enhancement suggestion would be to show both min/mi and mph without having to re-setup. Many runners normally think of their pace in min/mile. However, when using a treadmill we may have to use mph if the equipment doesn't allow us to switch units. I find that most of my "track repeats" and many of my tempo runs are done on the treadmill while my long runs are outside. While setting up again isn't a huge hassle, it would be nice to not have to do this step..Version: 1.0.5

ConvenientVery convenient not having to haul my book around. Access to my training schedule anytime. A few discrepancies noted: week 4 final 20 miler pace is wrong. Week 7 speed workout does not match book..Version: 1.0.3

Love it!Excellent app - no longer do I have to get my calculator out and convert my paces on the treadmill for training! Really helpful and great to have references to page numbers in book..Version: 1.0.3

Love itUse it for every race I do. Nice if it fit with the iHpneX screen, but not critical..Version: 2.0.1
