Memrise Easy Language Learning for Negative User Reviews

Just a point to bear in mindThe app is fine, but the company is shady. I tried to purchase a lifetime membership during a 50% off offer. My card payment wasn’t accepted through iTunes despite having enough £££ to cover the cost. I tried a credit card through iTunes. Again, payment didn’t go through. I logged on to Memrise on my computer, same issue with both my debit and credit cards not being accepted. Memrise app unlocked the full membership, but didn’t charge my cards; I screenshot everything just in case. After 30 days my premium stopped working, I sent all the screenshots to Memrise as this seemed to be an issue on their end. They didn’t honour the discount and instead told me to keep an eye on their page as they will have another sale soon. Not very user-pro rated..Version: 3.0.0

Do we have to pay or not???Really helpful, and easy. But i cant advance and its not making it clear if i have to pay to continue or not, its fine if i do ( i have duolingo, so no worries) but i would like to have clear instructions and messages! Please answer xxxx Other than that a great app.Version: 2.3.38

Level 2 French is very different from level 1I loved Level 1 French and thus purchased an annual subscription. Once I got to level 2, the quality and subject selection became much lower and inappropriate. French is notorious for having formal (polite) and informal ways of addressing people. As a visitor, you will be using polite or formal way of addressing everyone (from wait stuff to taxi drivers). Level 2 seems to be focusing on informal way talking to people. And they introduced party topic. As a foreigner, you will not be invited to any parties. Maybe if reach level B or higher and come to France more frequently, you might get an invite. That is why I think having this topic in level A2 is useless. If you address someone you do not know in informal way, you would be considered rude and very likely to get rude response back or no response. Since verbs are conjugated in French, the same verb would have different pronunciation in formal vs informal way of speaking. So learning informal phrases are not doing me much good. Also, I found some translations to English a bit awkward and missing punctuation. I am frustrated by this learning experience..Version: 2021.10.11

Used to be freeMemrise used to be free. I haven’t used it in a along time but was looking forward to learning again now that I have a new phone… to my disappointment, you can only do a single level of any course now without paying. For shame, Memrise. I understand that you need to make money, but isn’t it enough to have a pro option? The free version doesn’t need to be as great, but locking EVERYTHING except Level 1 behind a paywall isn’t nice. Used to slightly prefer this over Duolingo, but will now be sticking to the latter..Version: 2022.5.24

Deleting after a dayAfter being frustrated with Duolingo, I had a browse for another app that would help me learn French. This app was the top choice and looked great. However, as many other people have said, you cannot get past the first level without paying for a pro subscription. It’s really misleading when an app will only let you try the first level as this is usually the most basic and easy and therefore not much fun. You need to be able to experience much more of something to be able to make an informed choice about if it is worth paying to go pro. I liked the format of the app but the first level of the course has 95% of words I already knew, I don’t know how the course will progress and if it will become more of a challenge because it is locked. Not worth keeping on my device..Version: 2.3.28

I used to love this app…I used to use this app pretty often, it made learning languages fun. After a while, I wasn’t using it as much and money was a bit tighter, so I unsubscribed from the premium service. I later got a new device and never reinstalled it. Today I had a sudden urge to come back, thinking “I have the money to spend, might as well get back into this app”, so I reinstalled the app, only to be met with a horrible UI. What happened to the space and rocket theme from before? Why does it now look so ridiculously bad? It’s so unoriginal and boring, and it’s just not the same. I know me saying this isn’t going to make you revert it back, but could you at least add in a menu option that allows you to make it look nice again? Again, I doubt you’ll do that, but as a loyal fan in the past, it sickens me to see an app I once loved be trashed this badly :’(.Version: 2021.10.4

Why?Look, don’t get me wrong, I love the way this app teaches you how to learn languages... and I know what you’re thinking... “if you like it so much then why are you rating it so low?” Because it asks you to pay for it or otherwise you can’t get that far unless you jump into the really advanced stuff and not know what half of it means. I know that not everything can be free, but letting you do a little bit of a language and then cutting you off if you don’t pay money per month or per year, then what’s the point of even making not even a quarter of the app free and the rest not? Okay... rant over....Version: 2.3.4

Régression de l’appliC’est vraiment n’importe quoi vous avez enlever les différents cours disponibles autre que les langues. C pas la meilleure idée d’avoir fait régresser l’application je suis extrêmement déçue. 😡 vous devriez remettre les autres genres de cours si vous voulez avoir plus d’une étoile de ma part. Encore une chance que les cours sont enregistrés sur mon compte je vais pouvoir en faire profiter une amie qui étudie dans le domaine de la santé.Version: 3.0.14

UErased my review. U ruined the app.Version: 2023.9.11

Since updating the appThe latest version doesn’t seem to support the language I was learning, I lost all my progress and have no reason the keep this app installed. It’s a shame as I had just finished a trial with DuoLingo and preferred Memrise, I was going to buy it until I got curious and tapped to learn about the new features and updated the app..Version: 2023.8.9

Terrible3 yrs ago it was good. Now too much ads and payment. 1 star.Version: 2023.11.3

Looks so bad and glitchy nowIdk if memrise got bought out by another company but i just updated my app and regret it. It looks so cheap and generic now, the mandatory “reintroduction” video is blurry and just gives the vibe of one of those cheap apps that’s pumped out by the most random bottom of the barrel designers that are just low effort advert vehicles. I also CANT start any new languages anymore wth. just takes me to the same page asking to sync my data to the new app even though i’ve done it three times.Version: 2023.10.20

Useful review, NO LONGER FREE.I’m only writing this review because of recent events. Normally I wouldn’t write a review if an app was good or bad. When I first got this app, I had the intention of learning Japanese. Then I switched to Korean. I really enjoyed this app for the learning process. This would help you learn common phrases. This app was amazing compared to others and especially duolingo. I was satisfied with what was provided. This app would always ask “On a scale from 1-10, how would you recommend this app to your friends?” I would always put 10, because I really thought they would enjoy it and find it helpful. Recently I recommended this app to a friend. She really enjoyed it and found it useful. When she wanted to move on to the next lesson, she was bombarded with ads to purchase plans. So she deleted the app. Now she got the app again, thinking it was just an apparent bug, and was fixed. She comes to find that you completely need to purchase a plan, unlike before. THIS IS ONLY FOR NEW USERS. Which is completely unfair. We got this app because classes are expensive and other apps aren’t as helpful. If we wanted to purchase plans, we could have just gotten Rosetta Stone..Version: 2.4.3

Awesome app but... Money!!This app is great but you can barely learn much without having to pay to learn more! I love the way you run the app and the techniques you use to help us learn and remember each word, but you can only learn the few same words over and over unless you pay around $50 a month! I absolutely love the app except for that! I really wish this app didn’t push us to pay that much money! No other language apps are as good as yours and it’s a shame really that we can’t learn many words. I already know those few words and but those few words won’t help me learn the language. So please can you let us have access to some more activities, then this app would be 5 stars Amazing! I hope you take this into consideration, Laura.Version: 2.3.15

Good but you have to pay after a certain pointIt's great for learning everyone's already said that HOWEVER you need to rack up points to move onto the next level and as you progress you earn LESS points. This effectively makes its harder to progress and harder to learn more material. I'm only on Korean 3 and need a ridiculous 80,000 points to get to the next level. As I'm not subscribed, all I can do are the Classic Reviews which give you a couple hundred points, no where near enough to get you on the next level without taking months and months and months of reviewing the exact same information over and over again. Basically the only way to progress after a certain point is to pay to unlock new ways of getting points e.g speed tests etc which aren't free..Version: 2.3.11

What happened to all the courses?I was using this app to learn Bahasa Indonesian. There used to be a great variety of user-created courses, but these now appear to have disappeared along with the ability to create your own vocabulary lists. I’m disappointed!.Version: 2.3.21

Missing Grammar and WritingMemrise is a great app in a lot of ways, but I’m learning Japanese, and they use a whole new writing system. It would be great if you added in a writing section to practice our kanji, because if we’re just looking at it and selecting a picture or two, we’re not really practicing the writing. This goes for Chinese and other languages that don’t use the Latin script as well. There is also no way to learn grammar. Not many languages have the exact same word order as English. Please add in these sections and I will rate it five stars..Version: 2.3.11

Okay for learning vocab but a lot of issuesI’m going to talk about the Chinese (Mandarin) course as that’s the one I’ve seen most problems with: - Doesn’t actually allow you to answer using Chinese characters, only pinyin - When answering in pinyin, it will mark you wrong for negligible things like where you put the space in words. If you were typing with Chinese characters it wouldn’t make a difference so it’s ridiculous that you’re penalised for this - Accepted answers are often excessively and needlessly strict. For example ‘older brother’ is wrong but ‘elder brother’ is right. It shouldn’t make a difference. - Not very good system for learning characters. You don’t get to start hearing them out loud until near the end of the course, so it’s hard to have the mental connection to the pinyin words you’re learning. Not being able to answer using Chinese characters makes this even worse. - Random spelling mistakes and words missing in English definitions, plus the definitions are often unclear. (For example what do you mean by ‘watch’? Do you mean the verb or the object? It doesn’t say.) I’ve done the Korean course in full and I would say it’s better than the Chinese one (although) still quite limited. At the moment, I personally wouldn’t recommend it for these languages though, especially Chinese. It feels too incomplete and like it needs more work done..Version: 3.0.7

Please make other options availableI am a new 18 year old college student and wanted to be able to learn new languages on my own time and this app looked promising. For the most part it is. I can say that i have learned some helpful words and romanization for the words, however, as amazing as this app is I find it incredibly frustrating that I cannot proceed without paying absurd amounts of money per month. I signed up for a free trial which in my opinion should mean that i have free reign of the app for the duration of a week. Unfortunately I am only able to take the first lessen, everything else is locked and if I wish to move on an add pops up on my screen to pay for the pro version. I understand that it is a way for the makers to get paid for the app but if the app is free then I should be able to believe that it will stay free. As an educational app that I know many people are using for their own benefit and growth there should be a way for individuals to use the app without having to pay so much. Even if that means that they can only do a lesson each day at least they can proceed to learn, and if they want to do more like an entire section then they could pay a small fee around about 5 to 10 dollars. I just find it slightly unfair that this app is shown as a free learning app and after being on it for 10 minutes it wants you to pay 20, 30, 50 dollars. The app is great but that main factor is what makes me dislike it immensely..Version: 2.3.57

Great app, but...Hi Memrise, I think your app is highly beneficial to anyone who wishes to learn a language, but I do believe that you should let us language learners take a couple more lessons before having to buy a subscription. This is not only for my benefit, but for the benefit of your team. You see, we sign up to the app, learn for 5-10 mind, and then have to buy something. It’s really off-putting, and it’s probably losing you many customers. Maybe give us the first 5 lessons, then I think we all might consider a subscription. Thanks in advance! Please try and get back to me about what you think of my suggestion..Version: 2.3.44

Rip offThis app makes it extremely hard to cancel your subscription even if you delete the app or your account!!!! DO NOT DOWNLOAD IT..Version: 3.1.4

Used to be goodI liked this app a lot a few years ago. Recently reinstalled it and found it to have lost critical features. Part of its utility was accessing user-created content. Now, it will only show a handful of the old content I used (which is still available online through their website) and won’t let me search for anything other than a short list of approved courses. I’m sure this is useful to some people. I however am disappointed by the loss of functionality this app has undergone..Version: 2022.12.13

App is not userfriendlyI only use the app. It is not user friendly!. Switching between levels is not easy Btw, how I can turn off the video clip showing on the main page of the app?! (It’s called : Native speaker videos!!) The first 100 times that you see it while logging into the app is fine but after that it gets super annoying!.Version: 2023.11.17

DisappointingI really loved this app in the beginning. It kept track of words I struggled with and kept including those words in the little practice sessions. It wasn’t needy like Duolingo, it doesn’t make you do everything from scratch again if you miss a few days. Then, I finished the first section and discovered that the only way to continue was to fork out quite a bit of money for a subscription. There’s no free option. I understand that the developers would like to get paid for their hard work, but I would much rather watch ads as I simply don’t have money to spare. Duolingo has both free and paid versions, why isn’t that the case here? It’s a real shame. If Memrise does ever include a free option, I would definitely use it..Version: 3.1.40

No way to cancel auto renew!I liked the app but got into some financial trouble so went to cancel auto renew, they send u from the memrise site back to the app store but there is no button to turn it off only payment tiers! Had to contact apple support and they cancelled it for me, not happy thats a rotton practice so will refrain from ever subscribing or using this app again..Version: 2023.10.20

Doesn’t work on older phonesIt’ll let you download the older version of the app if your phone is old, but then just opens and says you need an update. Why even keep the older version accessible if it can’t be used? I know it’s optional cause plenty of apps do not let you download older versions.Version: 2023.10.20

Very good but annoying in the app versionI love this app and its amazing to learn on, just the app version is very unpolished and there are many things you cant access that you would otherwise be able to if you were using your computer..Version: 2.3.27

Hate the new lookThe new look of Memrise is really disappointing. For language learning apps I think Memrise is better than any! I have learnt a lot in a short amount of time. But I'm really sad to find it's changed it's look. It used to be fun, game-like and quirky. The game like appearance made learning a language less intimidating and more fun. The new look is awful - it's bland, generic and it's blandness and genericness makes r hard to navigate and unpleasant to use. They've lost a big draw card of something that made them unique, and I suppose they did this in order to "fit in". Really unfortunate..Version: 3.0.2

Official courses not free anymore. The app's very useful, however whilst the download page says that it's the optional extras that are part of the pro membership, after a couple of days, without warning the official language courses become locked and require a pro membership. It seems the unofficial community-made courses can still be accessed, though naturally the quality of those vary. I went on the discussion forums and found this seems to be affecting all new users. Please update your app description memrise - your courses aren't free anymore..Version: 2.2.35

Good app but I’m broke for proI absolutely want to love this app, and from the get go I really did. But then I realised that the only real way I could learn more is to pay for the pro membership, something I’m not able to do. I’m using this app for my Italian GCSEs next year after I realised how much I hated Duolingo and I desperately need this to help me progress as it’s the only app I’ve found that actually helps me. I’m stuck in a constant loop of the launchpad of Italian one because I don’t know enough to go to Italian two yet and I need to know more in Italian one for both the GCSEs and to move to Italian two. Please at least try and make more accessible and free in Italian one at least. I don’t want to but if all else fails I’ll have to turn back to Duolingo, and I really don’t want to do that. I do hope that there is more available and hat I’m just being an idiot, but for the moment I have to doubt this.Version: 2.3.41

Arabic lacking greatlyI was enjoying the alphabet lessons, and felt progress and motivation, so I paid for a year subscription. But the problem started when the completion of the alphabet lessons led me directly to vocabulary such as thank you, good morning, etc., with no lessons on actually reading chunks (morphemes) of letter combinations. At this point I’m only surviving in the vocabulary section by memorizing what shape words look like, without knowing how the words actually phonetically read out. I have learned to read and write Mandarin, so I’m experienced enough to identify a bad program when I see one. Since each Arabic letter has 3 forms (initial, medial, final), it’s too much of a leap to go straight into vocabulary without some phonetics lessons. A bridge needs to be built to solve the lessons’ poor transition from alphabet to vocabulary words. The Arabic alphabet is an abjad, meaning many vowels aren’t actually written. The program made no attempt to introduce and teach this. While in the alphabet section, the app asked me how I would rate Memrise in terms of grammar instruction. This survey question belongs in the grammar section, not in the alphabet section where I haven’t even had exposure to grammar yet. Whatever is available in the Pro upgraded version can’t make up for a poor foundation. I’m going to apply for a refund..Version: 2.3.49

5 years ago I rated this 5 starsWhen I first started using the Memrise app back in 2013, it was easily my favourite learning app, with “mems,” literally thousands of courses on any subject you could think of (both official courses, and community created ones), and a really easy to use (and almost completely free) interface. Now... I’m really not feeling the love. (Especially since the speed review isn’t free in the iOS app!!!). Hopefully the creators remember their roots, and bring back the inclusive community feel, and the scope and diversity that Memrise used to have..Version: 2.3.58

New design is badI don’t like the new design. The colour scheme is cold and not welcoming - before was much warmer and seems friendlier. Also it’s harder to track to see if I’m meeting daily goal. I’ve been using it much less after the new design got released, although this is my favorite language learning app because of the customized vocab list learning feature. I used to use it almost everyday..Version: 3.0.12

Amazing appI like that this app lets you study many courses for free. They cover over 40 languages. Memrise has really helped me to build my vocabulary and practice listening to correct pronunciation. I highly recommend this app. Edit: since my original review, Memrise has made numerous changes to the app layout, visuals, and learning structure. I’m not impressed with these changes, but as long as they are minor and leave my app alone, I’ll continue to learn in peace. The direction of the platform really undermines the original vision, the work of volunteer contributors, and the expectation of paying customers..Version: 2022.12.13

Texting thingIt was good app at the start except now it's I've gotta pay for stuff just so I can learn Japanese and what's worse is that stupid texting thing wants me to figure out those places in Japan when I don't even know them SO HOW TYE FLIPPING HECK AM I SUPPOSED TO FIGURE IT OUT?!?! I've tried basically every single way and the other bot thing does is give me tips that are useless! I'm better off just learning it at high school..Version: 2.3.44

Other courseDoes Memrise provide other courses like: cantonese or piano or music?.Version: 2.3.55

Great app, it's a shame about the paywallApp works awesomely, easily the easiest I've found to learn Japanese. It's a shame that after level 1 it tells me to upgrade to pro and I cannot progress any further.Version: 2.3.5

It’s okayI really like it but they should make a plan that’s free and you have to watch ads and maybe earn hearts like duolingo so we can learn but not have to pay because some people can’t afford this stuff. I am okay with watching ads and stuff but come on? You couldn’t make a free plan that offers stuff but you have to watch ads. I think there should be a paid one and an unpaid one. Like unpaid should be ads, a limited amount of hearts and you have to wait a little bit to regenerate them or you can watch 2 ads for 2 hearts like duolingo but you might wanna change it up a bit. Then maybe the premium should be a plan you pay for with no ads, unlimited hearts, and everything unlocked. This is just my opinion because some people cannot pay for this stuff because they have to pay for school or other stuff. But other than than I think this is a way better app then all the other ones that I have ever tried to learn another language and that’s really the only flaw that you only get a small trial and then your forced to pay for it and don’t even get a choice with ads or anything. The design and the way they teach the languages thought are on point and I think the progress that people make on here is so good and better than any other app. I would definitely use this if it had a free version with ads..Version: 3.2.15

Annoying ChatbotAs great as this app is, it is really let down by the chat bot feature. The chat bot has very limited capability for some languages including Mandarin, and constantly asks me to do the same conversation every single time. There is no way to turn off the chat bot feature to stop it from bugging me..Version: 2.3.28

Only Level 1 is FreeRead online reviews about issues with all languages not letting nonpaying users move forward past level 1 (only a couple of words and phrases). Really disappointing because the app looks great and my friends with androids love it..Version: 2.3.32

Bugs make it unusableIt was my favorite language app and I started a subscription, after each update it became progressively worse. It might be fine for Romance languages, but for Tibetan there are endless glitches, marking correct words wrong and not being able to type the alphabet accurately, make it unusable. I wish they’d fix it, it used to be a great app. I keep coming back every 5-6 months to see if the bugs have been fixed. Oh well, it gets progressively worse as they charge more, you get less until it’s unusable. They say they have to charge crazy high prices to keep creating content, yet they offer less content and the app has become progressively more unreliable. Lol. Maybe go back to charging less and restore earlier content that worked? UPDATE: Developer customer service tip—tone deaf copy paste replies are worse than no reply. Now everyone reading reviews can see how often you use this meaningless reply. It shows you don’t read and respond to users’ suggestions or complaints. You are most definitely not “the same Memrise” I knew and loved. Did you read the bit where I said Memrise is no longer functioning for the non Romance language I’m learning? LOL..Version: 2022.11.22

Quite disappointedVery disappointed in the new version of this app with the frequent glitches, the uninteresting YouTube videos where they speak way too quickly and you can’t understand anything and they keep prompting me to subscribe even if I already have an active subscription ( drives me crazy!) Will go back to another app as soon as my subscription finishes….Version: 2023.10.3

DecentMostly good but has problems. Cant set course to have no daily goal (like you can on the website) Learning settings do not sync with web version The app turns music volume down during tests, no way to disable this. seems like things that would be fixed already..Version: 2022.10.3

WhatWhy does it say be careful in spanish is aguas..Version: 2023.3.16

DisappointedI used to be very active on memrise a few years ago. Removing community content for 'the new experience' wasn't a good idea. Also, the app was glitchy and kept sending me through the same prompts, would freeze or generally not be user friendly. Going back to Duolingo..Version: 2023.7.13

PayingI don’t like how many times it asks to pay and how many things we can do without paying are limited..Version: 2023.11.3

I like the idea of the app but I’m finding it a struggle.I’m trying to learn Russian. I liked the idea of the app when I tried it out. I liked the gamification, how it offers more materials than Duolingo in terms of grammar and things like that. I also thought it would help me get comfortable with Cyrillic. So I bought the Black Friday sale for the annual plan. However, I am now regretting that decision as the words are getting more difficult and I have been using the app daily over more time. I wish the speakers said the new words once in native/natural speed, then broke them down and slowed down. It’s hard to tell if I am getting the right pronunciation, and even harder to memorize. I find myself supplementing the lessons with other sources because while future lessons provide ample review, there is no way to repeat past lessons. I also wish cultural context was provided. It gives you extremely casual versions of words first, without explaining the difference between formalities. I’ll have to try it for awhile until my subscription runs out and maybe my opinion will change, but I wish I could get a refund..Version: 2.3.52

Too pricyWhile the initial demo was fun I was disappointed to find out that you cannot progress through the first stage without signing up for a subscription. Even at half price it’s unfortunately out of my reach. I wish there was a free version where you watch ads at times to progress levels..Version: 2.3.49

Too many mistakes and major loss of progressI've maxed out japanese 2, but lots of my progress got wiped for no reason today. the course appears to be incomplete. same thing happened to my japanese 3. at least 10% is wiped, and now it forces me to learn old words i've already learned months ago, and i'm unable to progress forward. btw there are tons of mistakes with the translation and nobody ever addresses it or reply to my requests about these mistakes. update: the missing progresses magically recovered today.. btw please review the entire japanese 3 course and fix all of the mistakes, thanks! when you learn the course in simplified chinese, the translation (and even the hiragana sometimes) have too many mistakes. i've tried to report them twice in the past but got no replies. and as i progress through the course i've discovered a lot more mistakes that are too many to report individually. for an educational app that costs quite a lot of money, it's irresponsible to mislead the students with this amount of mistakes. so it's best if you guys could go through the entire course and fix all of the mistakes. btw your app needs to implement a 'report mistake' button so that the community can help improve the app more conveniently..Version: 2023.1.19

(To developers: please read, feedback included.) - Good platform, poor app redesign.Memrise is a great platform. I find it really effective and useful. However, as of the recent update, I find myself being forced to use the website as the mobile app redesign is simply horrific. The colour combinations used are atrocious, and the plain, white backgrounds look very unprofessional and like little thought was put into it. Also, when doing exercises that require you to choose the right combination of words to get the correct answer, it is very infuriating how you now need to specifically tap the text in the word box in order for it to be selected. Previously, if you just tapped the word box it would work. I love memrise, but I hate this app. Will be sticking with the website for now..Version: 3.0.5

Most recent updateThe style change is really hard on my eyes and I feel it is harder to manage the app and know where to go. It now looks more like a child’s app than an education app. Not a fan In terms of learning language, I feel it’s a bit too fast paced for some things. I feel that I’m not learning the breakdown before learning the phrase so it makes longer phrases harder to learn. For example a taught phrase is “take me to the hospital please.” Well, can I learn the word for hospital and take me to first?.Version: 3.0.0

This app shouldn’t be allowed to be promoted as freeI have tried many language apps and websites and when I came across this one I was quite impressed, it taught me at a pace I liked... that was until I realised I couldn’t get past level 1 unless I paid for it, so that means I could only learn 8 words. I thought maybe I’ll pay because I like the app and the I saw the price... what a joke! That is way too much pay, especially for an app. I get people worked hard on it but if it was even half of what it is (even on top of the discounts you’ve tried to prompt) then it would be reasonable. I don’t have the kind of money especially since I’m going overseas which is one of the reasons I wanted to learn a langue, likely most others using this will have the same issue. This app has so much potential and it’s such a shame it costs so much. I also think it shouldn’t allowed to say free on the App Store as in the end it’s ridiculously misleading..Version: 2.3.11

Okay for more common languages and increasing vocabularyI’ve been using Memrise for about 8 months and covering two languages; French and Danish. I learned French at school and am finding that Memrise’s teaching method is far better for this than learning the basics for Danish. It would definitely be improved with more content focussed on grammar and basic pronunciation but that might be more of a reflection on my learning style. Danish also has far less varied content than French. There’s a few problems along the way. * There’s been a few words in Danish where it’s presented on screen but no accompanying voice to tell you how to pronounce it * when clicking on words to rearrange into phrases the app sometimes part recognises your click and greys out the word but doesn’t add it to the phrase you’re building * the pronunciation rounds where you pronounce words and the app tells you if it’s right or wrong is definitely flawed and I’ve even had the app fail to recognise it’s own pronunciation of words when I’ve tried replaying the word whilst recording (developers - try replaying augmenter in French as this definitely isn’t recognised). In summary I think if Memrise’s learning style works for you then great, but I can’t see me renewing my subscription when it expires..Version: 3.1.39

Very beginner (Japanese)First impression when signing in and picking your language (Japanese in my case), I get two options: Basic & Advanced. I picked advanced since I’m at a N4-N3 level which is approaching intermediate, not advanced, but definitely not basic. Once selected, it directly takes you into a lesson without explaining what you’re going to learn. The first screen presents you with a vocabulary word and sounds fully turned on despite my volume rocker being turned off. Bad UX behavior, respect the users settings. That’s the second bad impression. In addition, the vocab presented is romanized spelling. I’d let it go if it was in Hiragana/Katakana without the Kanji but if you can’t read Hiragana/Katakana, you’re still at a very basic level, nowhere near advanced. Needless to say, I exited out of the course because that’s not doing anything for me. Then looking at the course outline you see in the overview, this whole course looks to be extremely beginner oriented. This won’t even get you to N5 level. So if you intend to learn Japanese and it’s your first exposure to it, maybe this app is ok. I can’t really tell because it’s too basic for me. If you’re looking for anything more advanced, the Japanese course is not for you. It would be helpful if they declared upfront the level of education you could expect..Version: 2.3.63

Good but all-over-the-placeI love this approach and its content. However the learning steps are all over the place. One minute I’m learning “hello” “goodbye” “please” etc, the next I’m suddenly learning more complex grammar then flip back without warning into simple vocabulary. I can’t tell where I’m up to and whether I’m following a logical pathway - it just seems random in its progession through the language course. That said I am definitely brushing up on the language by using the app..Version: 2021.6.7

No longer worth itIt was useful for the years i used it, but now its time to delete. As always the cause is developers greed. Previous update removed all the images I set for reminders on the vocabulary. Around 4000 images lost, around 2 years of work lost. On this newest update, they have added something everyone was waiting for (everyone as in all developers not the users): FULL SCREEN MAX VOLUME UNSKIPPABLE VIDEO ADS. Its time to delete the app, accept the loss of my 2 years of work and move on. I sincerely hope developers like this get the ax on the next tech job cut. I’ll try Anki instead, but if that app gets famous their developers will get greedy and the same will happen so I think ill just go back to paper cut memory cards. Greedy developers dont deserve your money, and you downloading the app watching their adds gives them money. Stop giving them money. Money is the only language the greedy understand. Update to reply the greedy developers automatic and irrelevant response: i dont care which free services you offer my review is not about the free services you offer my review is about your greed, the loss of 2 years of work in your app, and the latest inclusion of FULL SCREEN MAX VOLUME UNSKIPPABLE VIDEO ADS which distract from learning and render all the free services you offer UNUSABLE. Read the reviews properly before pasting your automatic response on them. And no im not creating any courses anymore so in a couple of years you just delete them. You are greedy..Version: 2023.2.20

Pro Features Lacking for Polish CoursesThis is generally a good app and had contributed hugely to Polish language skills and vocabulary. As a commuter the ability to download courses for offline learning is very helpful. This app and it’s approach to learning has been much more successful for me than other apps like Babel and DuoLingo. That being said it is not without it’s drawbacks. For some reason, despite updates I am still stuck on a UI that doesn’t match the App Store screen shots. Larger user contributed courses do not download correctly. None of the 1st party Polish courses offer grammar bot functionality, chat bot, or learn-with-locals functionality. Courses will often introduce a word on flash card but will use a different conjugation or declension on a subsequent card with no explanation. I know this is difficult in Polish as verbs can have seven different conjugations but some more content or lessons around conjugation and grammar in the advanced courses would be very helpful. Overall the app is good but for some languages, especially polish or Slavic languages, the pro content is seriously lacking making the pro subscription a lower value for money than it could be..Version: 2.3.49

Best features removed in premium/higher levelsThey used to have video conversations to practice listening and comprehension which was one of the best features. Once I upgraded to continue learning it’s completely removed now. A finesse and scam for downgrading quality for higher levels. Otherwise, I enjoy the fact you can learn slang and colloquial expressions instead of traditional vocabulary.Version: 2023.4.17

Total randomnessIt’s not the worst language learning app but sometimes the format is frustrating. Memrise does a good job of introducing people to language that actual people use but the format of the lessons is all over the place and sometimes the length of the modules can be frustrating. In some cases you will have a 30 second module which is fine but the they follow it up with something that’s 15 minutes. I don’t mind doing 15 minutes of language learning but sometimes I do memrise because I have 5-10 minutes and want to study as a refresher. I understand that learning languages takes time but breaking up their bigger learning modules into smaller chunks would be helpful. It’s really just frustrating for everything to be completely random and to have no real control over how long it takes to complete separate modules. Another that makes it difficult to like is the pronunciation portions which are inordinately difficult and time consuming honestly the only reason I continue to use this app is because I signed up for it on a discount and don’t want to waste all of my money otherwise the app isn’t very good and I recommend at the very least not paying for it..Version: 3.1.44

A waste of money, complete rip-off.I think this app is amazing, and has good potential for catching the eye of thousands of language learners, if not more. I love the way it teaches you, but is also considerate of people forgetting what they’ve learnt. But unfortunately, this app has one large flaw. The subscription. Now I’m perfectly aware that the app creators worked hard to perfect this app, and need payment. But I would honestly rather Memrise to be constantly showing ads than a $100 dollar subscription! It wouldn’t be so bad to pay a smaller fee, or even just pay a few dollars for the app, but having to pay $100 dollars to learn is ridiculous, and I don’t care how many discounts you try to throw upon me. Next year I’m going to be taking French as a subject, and I wanted to get a head start. I immediately fell in love with this app and how helpful it was, until I discovered that you had to pay $100 dollars for the complete learning experience. And that was only for a year! It’s a complete rip-off. You should be encouraging people to learn, not put them off with a disgustingly priced subscriptions! If you read this, I thank you for your time. If you try to solve this, I greatly appreciate your effort more than you could know. Thank you. -An Unhappy User (for now?).Version: 2.3.11

Do not get this app!Memrise just made an announcement that they will move all community courses to pasture on a new website called ‘Decks’. We don’t even get an app or offline options. This makes it useless for 90% of us who have been with Memrise from the start. Do not download this unless you are a beginner and want to give money to a company that volunteers built. They have spit in our faces. Disgusting..Version: 2.4.2

After every update this app gets worse and worseI have been using memrise for around 10 years now. the website itself used to be wonderful. i loved the feature of having mems to help me learn a word. and if the course didn’t have the words pronounced (which is important for thai as sometimes you have to assume the vowel connected to the consonants) then i could write how it’s supposed to be pronounced in the mem. but know all of my mems are gone. all the ones i used created by others are gone too. not only that, the layout of the app and website is ugly and inefficient. the app still doesn’t let you find courses outside of their own. the app doesn’t let you click on users to see the courses they are doing. the app doesn’t let you follow users. the app won’t show you a course leaderboard unless you learn or review some words. the app doesn’t let you filter through your courses efficiently if you have studied 100s of courses. the website also doesn’t do this to a god enough standard, it shouldn’t only be filtering through languages. you should be able to advance filter with other stuff like date ranges or words in the title. i would never pay for memrise until it begins doing these things. the only reason i stay is because of the courses i have put hours in through my life, but if it keeps heading this way i will have to leave. please make memrise what it used to be and better..Version: 2022.8.9

Not a free app, don't market it as such.Everything is locked after the first level, so you get to learn a few words, then you're forced to pay for a subscription that costs over $100 or stop using the app, and marketing it as free is a blatant lie. If you want to make money from the app, charge $10 for a full version and be done with it. I also find it ridiculous that you can't even access the offline mode without paying... some of us have wifi only devices we want to use on two hour commutes to use out time well. Have deleted the app, and will stick with duolingo..Version: 2.3.14

Fun but you have to payJust downloaded this app and i loved it on first try. it was so fun and i feel like i could learn a language because of how fun it is, like looking forward to learning everyday. it’s just unfortunate when i found out to advance to the next level, you need to pay. i completed two stages before being asked to pay. but if i were willing to pay, id definitely give this app a go..Version: 2.3.57

Great Custom Content the Publisher Tries its Best to HideThis app has alright official content most of which is behind a paywall but amazing custom content that the publisher makes as inaccessible as possible. I’m learning Japanese and the official content is useful for memorizing phrases for travelling but if you’re like me and trying to learn the language or use it to supplement other learning through a course it’s not very useful. However there is great custom content that the community has created that is much better designed for learning the language and free. However, the publisher does it’s best to make this content as inaccessible as possible, if it weren’t for this I’d give it 5 stars. The content is great but the publisher is trying its best to hide it and may one day remove it leaving you with the subpar official courses..Version: 2023.9.21

Very DisappointedMaybe I’m too dumb for technology but this app seems very disjointed and disorganized. As someone with no exposure to the language I’m trying to learn (no friends or family who speak it) I need to start with the absolute basics. As a tourist I don’t need to know how to tell time before I know how to order basic food dishes, ask for directions or ask where the bathroom is..Version: 2023.6.26

Great app but lots of errors nowI’ve been using Memrise for a few years learning Japanese. It’s by far the best all for memorization I’ve found, but over the last year or so a ton of errors have started appearing. Where there’s an incorrect translation, or the audio doesn’t match the text, etc. I contacted customer support and they sent me a form to fill out, which I did for about 15 different translations. It’s been a few months but nothing seems to have been fixed. I asked customer support if they would be fixed eventually but received no reply. Now when I open the app I know a bunch of things are wrong and so to get the answer right I have to memorize an incorrect translation. And that’s just the words that I know are incorrect! I’m sure I’m building all sorts of bad habits. So I’ll have to move on to another app I guess..Version: 2023.10.20

OkayIt’s a decent app for learning a new language and I like the spaced repetition idea. I do think it’s best for beginners though as you can only learn vocabulary and not sentence structure. The only problems I’ve had are that it’s constantly reminding you to upgrade which I understand as the company needs money but maybe those reminders could be a little less frequent? Also I found that the only courses you can do on the app are the basic ones that I think Memrise made themselves. The only way to find another course (which I need to do for my GCSE’s) is to go to the website and search for it there, which I find annoying because the whole point of getting the app is so you don’t have to go to the website. I use Memrise to help me learn Mandarin and so far it is working with helping me to recognise the characters but I think it is better suited to a language like Spanish or French which uses the same alphabet. Overall I think it’s alright and I’m going to continue using it, but it’s definitely not going to be my main/only source of learning..Version: 3.1.2

DisappointedI absolutely love the way Memrise has set itself up. I have tried many language learning courses and none have been better than this one! Memrise gives an amazing learning experience that makes time fly by, I learned almost 300 new words in the two weeks that I started. Although this might not be the platform everyone is looking for, it was perfect for me. The points you get from learning more and more, and reviewing words makes it a competition to see who can get the most on the leaderboard. Memrise put some type of magic in this app, and I would strongly recommend it to anyone wanting to learn a language fast! However, I switched from computer learning on Memrise to on my phone and I am highly disappointed. On the website it allows you to do everything without having to purchase anything. The app however is the opposite and it is near to impossible to learn on a mobile device without having to pay monthly or yearly. I understand that they need to make money off of it, but the computer version gives free services..Version: 2021.7.12

Very useful, but certain aspects are very aggravatingI like the app overall - I like that it provides words and sentences, along with actual native speakers saying them. However, sometimes those speakers say things fast - far, far faster than you’d say them in normal conversation, and they often drop words. In one particularly stupid case, the speaker said “Pommes eine Minute!” Instead of “ich brauche noch eine Minute”, which is nonsensical, and not helpful for learning. The grammatical explanations are sparse and not connected to the phrases you’re learning, as far as I can tell, so you’ll need another source for that, and I’d recommend being familiar with a fair portion of the grammar before using this app. It also refuses to remember my target words per day, and it stays at 5, no matter what I do. That, plus some crashes I’ve had trying to navigate the settings, make the app feel less polished than it should be..Version: 3.1.42

Way they make money is dirtyWhat kind of “free education” app if it doesn’t allow you to learn new words? I saw some publisher responses saying “we need money to improve our service”. Yes I understand they have to make money. Money indeed is the most important thing in the business. But is forcing users to pay to use the most basic functionality of the app (LEARNING NEW WORD) the right way of making money? Do you not want to earn money in the way that because the service of the app is great so the users are willing to pay to use more functionalities? If you use the word “free” and giving users an option of using the app for free, isn’t it fair to make it FEASIBLE to use it for free? At the moment there is no way of using the app without being a pro member. This kind of opinions have been all around even on the publisher’s web page and yet the they seem not taking this as a serious problem. As long as they do not change the attitude, I won’t pay for the membership and stick to the pc version which seems to work for some reasons. Thank you for reading..Version: 2.3.21

I used to love this appTrue to its name, I used to truly feel inspired and in awe when the rocket ship flew higher and higher as I progressed through each course. It was fun and fresh, especially as I was using it while studying abroad during the summer of 2017. The flower design and mechanic was interesting, the alien buddy that you leveled up was great, and the color palette made me keep coming back without any feelings of monotony or boredom. It’s really a shame Memrise had to sell out to a consulting company for a new, more “mature” design. Because of it, MemRISE truly isn’t the same team and app it was during its peak. I no longer feel like I’m rising as I learn, and I just want to close the app as soon as I open it. Nothing in this current design even faintly acknowledges its historical design and “rise” concept. It became a hollow shell of its old self. Bring back the old design Memrise. Your downloads numbers should evidence enough of this huge mistake. You alienated your old user base during its peak and you lost my trust as a company when you doubled down on keeping the redesign despite seeing the obvious results in your download numbers. You chose your own fate. It’s never too late to turn back. Or maybe it is now..Version: 2021.11.8

Just another pay to playMemrise is great app. The way the lessons are set out and executed is honestly better than any other language app I’ve used. It also teaches helpful phrases instead of just random words, and it’s taught me quite a bit in just a few days. So why only one star? Well, if you read the title, you’ll know. You can’t progress past LEVEL TWO of the lessons without paying over $100. Yes, I get it. Developers need to earn money somehow. But really? We can only do two lessons before we have to pay? That’s really dumb. Especially the price, which will turn off most people. Why not just put ads on the app? As long as they don’t come up every 5 seconds, most people are okay with ads. Or at least make it so that we can still do the lessons, but we get something extra (like more, personalised lessons) if we buy the subscription. Look, if you’re willing to buy the subscription when it goes on sale or something, go for it. It’s a really helpful app. But if not, I recommend going back to Duolingo before he kidnaps your family..Version: 3.0.5

Planned removal of community content removes all valueI used to be a big booster and evangelist for this app and was a Pro subscriber for years. They just announced plans to migrate the community-created content (which was this app’s greatest strength and what differentiated them from other language apps) to a web only site. Extremely disappointing and there is now no more value in this app if they follow through with their plans. Update! They just announced that they will be creating a separate app with offline mode after listening to their users. This is good news and I’m now cautiously optimistic. Second update: I have updated my review to 1-star again as I received developer feedback that they are working on a “mobile friendly website” for their community courses instead of a mobile app. This is not what I want and doesn’t suit me at all. If they go back to a “website” I will cancel my subscription again..Version: 3.1.0

Still spoilt by too many advertsA promising App but the incessant ads to take out a subscription are off-putting :-/ Just completed part of a lesson. The first ad to upgrade appeared before I even started. The second ad appeared when the first set of exercises was completed (60% of the daily target). The third ad appeared when I achieved 100% of the daily target. I appreciate the need to generate income but quite simply when it cannot be afforded the shear volume of ads just highlights the fact that you cannot afford it. Now the section to practice difficult words doesn’t work. Tap on the button but the system doesn’t respond. Similarly the Review of words learnt is no longer accessible. Finally the conversation videos where the same person is doing both sides of the dialogue is just unnatural. So far the only videos that do work are the five native speakers filmed in and around Rome. It could be a great App but unfortunately there are so many things that need addressing I’ll be going elsewhere. Sadly just deleted the App :-(.Version: 2023.10.13

Doesn’t workI’ve tried deleting and redownloading the app multiple times, but no matter what nothing loads for me..Version: 2023.8.23

Good but limited coursesThe app is good , I want learn English but there are only 2 courses ... I think is not enough . I like it , but Something else is missing..Version: 2.3.11
