✓ This app saved my marriageI met my wife on a cold, rainy day in New Orleans. I was eating alone at a restaurant in the bayou, simmering over an argument that I just had with my boss. This was a work trip but I just needed to take a day — one single day — to explore and clear my head. I asked her if that was ok and she just hung up the phone and sent me an invoice for both of the plane tickets AND the hotel. My blood was positively boiling. The waitress, bless her heart, asked if I wanted a Reuben. “WHAT THE H*LL IS A REUBEN?!” came thundering out of my mouth faster than I could stop it — I was not in my right mind, so forgive me. Perhaps it was a bad day for her as well because she just ran away screaming and crying and blowing snot out of her nose. Trickles of guilt slowly melted my anger away, like the raindrops on the window of the restaurant. I got up to find her and console her. After searching for hours I found her curled up under a table (there was a large tablecloth concealing her underneath, hence the trouble). I should also mention that I am a fairly diminutive woman, so my outburst probably came as a surprise to her. I found out, after talking to her for a while underneath this table, she was raised with what she calls “swamp ethics”; in other words, a woman is not allowed to speak above 65 decibels and if she does she is classified a witch and therefore excommunicated from her village. Well, she had done so. My earlier actions resurfaced those memories, so I comforted her and redirected her attention to the present. We kept talking and fell deeply in love over the next few days, stuffing our faces with Reubens of all sorts. We got married on a relatively dry peat mound, waving a fat middle finger to the swamp people and screaming at roughly 67 decibels (above the legal limit for women). And the rest, as they say, is history… Until recently. I don’t want to get into the details of the deterioration of our marriage (too hard), but suffice it to say that my Reuben outburst was not an isolated incident. She apparently had enough after I punched a whole plate of tandoori chicken through a wall and no I will not explain further (too hard). After months of loneliness and regret, I was indulging myself by surfing the Apple App Store and I came across ReuBeen: a Sandwich Based Social Media. Out of sheer curiosity and a bit of nostalgia, I clicked “download”. And there she was; my old love had also come across this app and had been posting for months. I sent her a friend request — she accepted! My heart skipped two whole beats :) We started chatting again and rekindling our relationship. I won’t bore you with the details but we are currently back together, with no string attached and no expectations this time, messily eating Reubens in the bayou like two giddy kids discovering milk chocolate for the first time.
