What3words: Navigation & Maps for Negative User Reviews

PointlessToo clever for its own good. You need a device (connected to the internet) to convert a grid reference into 3 random words. You have no way of working out where this is. It could be anywhere in the world. You need a device (preferably connected to the internet?) to convert these 3 random words back to a grid reference. What’s the point of converting a number that is totally understandable (debatable?) into 3 random words that are less understandable (debatable)? Without some sort of device there is no way of knowing if the 3 random words represented a valid location. Anyone who knows the grid ref system would know immediately if the number made any sense. Why not just use a grid reference? At least anyone familiar with the system has some idea where it is. It can also be used with varying levels of accuracy (I.e. a general location or a more precise location). The 3 word system lacks this. A grid ref can also be read from a MAP!.Version: 4.0.2

Needs landscape modeThe lack of landscape mode is a major problem for two reasons: a) some people may wish to use this on an iPad; and b) it is often more convenient to view a map in landscape mode..Version: 3.4.2

Can’t get it to work and no instructionsI installed it on iPhone because of a local news story that local 911 is using it. I can’t get it to work. There are no instructions. It asked me to pick a language, and then I get a blank white screen that says What Three Words. In perfect English. If it isn’t actually supposed to do anything for me it hardly tells me that since there ARE no instructions. What idiots. I sure can’t give 911 3 words if it doesn’t give them to me. ////////////////////////:///// I followed link from news article to what 3 words web site and got a screen that said click on search bar to get three words, unclear which space they mean, I clicked all over the page and nothing happened. /////////////////////////// My guess is this app run by high tech engineers who can’t think and don’t care. Developer any response that doesn’t include a link to the instruction page will be nonresponsive. That’s instructions not a video demoing how blocks on a map correspond to 3 words. You need to grow heads..Version: 4.19

100 Adelaide St W - pointing to wrong locationFirst time to search an address on this app and point to a wrong location, about 3 miles with the correct location. When I complained this inaccuracy to them, they pointed the blamed Google and Apple maps as these are their sources for geocode and told me they can’t do anything. Wow, you are blaming other companies while they don’t share profits to your app. Why not coordinate with them to correct the issue instead instead of putting the blame to them. Did Google and Apple maps ask this company to use them? Or do you even have license to use these companies in your app? Update: Why should I be the one to contact your sources? I am not the developer of this app. Besides, this address is CORRECT when I search in Google and Apple maps..Version: 4.14.1

Why? Just why?If you have a phone to use this app, you can use the GPS to find your coordinate that will be understood by EVERYBODY without using a stupid app! And GPS will work when those server will be down.Version: 4.14.1

Seemingly not great on remote islands...?!I can see this app being useful for those who don’t use grid references / maps but only when there’s signal it seems... I decided to test this out on a remote Scottish island where you mostly only get “GPRS” mobile phone signal. It wouldn’t work for me, so if it does work using GPS, how? Is there a setting you need to change? When I was away from 3G or WiFi the map wouldn’t load - you just got an unhelpful series of grids and it didn’t display the 3 words for your location. You could click on a random square and it gave 3 words but that’s not helpful if you can’t see a map & want / need to know where you are! In contrast, my other app that is based on British National Grid has worked seamlessly & brilliantly - providing me with accurate grid references all day. Just what I need biological recording..Version: 4.1

Great app with a big flawI love the idea of this app and they have done well implementing it. HOWEVER, it is useless without cellular data (which I suspect is the case in many, if not most, areas that do not have street addresses). I tried using the app in several national parks ( which have spotty or no cell service) over the last couple of weeks. The app ‘works’, giving a 3 word address based on the GPS but there is no map. It sorely needs downloadable maps similar to the way the HERE WeGo app works..Version: 4.1.4

Difficulty signing upThe T&C check box is rather faint to see. Took awhile before I saw it..Version: 4.9

Good… if the emergency services actually used itI’ve had this app on my phone for a while because I thought it was a good idea, and never had to use it until today when a friend collapsed on the street. Whilst on the phone to the emergency services I loaded up the app to get the 3 word address only for the emergency service agent to tell me that they DONT USE THIS APP AT ALL, and refused to allow me to even attempt to give the 3 words provided by the app. So instead of the app providing a 10 second location, I had to explain for 6-7 minutes where we were and what was around us as they would not allow use of this app. I don’t know if this is a failing of the app or the agent on the end of the 999 call, but for an app that advertises itself as for use in emergencies by the emergency services, only for the emergency services to tell me they don’t use the details the app provides is horrific especially during an emergency..Version: 4.9

What3wordsDon’t understand a thing about this app..Version: 4.27.4

Uhm…Prompted to rate the app 2 minutes in. Pretty early in my opinion. So, tried to find the square for my house. Used the satellite view as suggested. Too bad the satellite imagery is outdated, so can’t exactly pinpoint my house which is of recent construction. Hope I’ll have something better to say going forward..Version: 4.25

Really cool idea! Not Worth It Right NowThis app is super impractical and kind of a waste of time. Why would I open an app that simply redirects me to google maps or apple maps? Why not just open Apple maps or Google maps first? Maybe try incorporating this tech into google maps or a friend finder app? I Imagine myself using this to find someone in a crowded place. For example it would be useful when locating a friend at a festival or a date at a busy park. Since this app decides space by a 3 meter radius and Google maps and Apple maps are accurate within a 5 m radius. This app is technically more accurate which would be helpful in crowded places and could be used to locate people with more accuracy. I’m not saying don’t use this app. I just don’t have use for it as of right now and see no point in opening an app that’s simply going to redirect me to another app for directions somewhere..Version: 4.11

Sounds useful butMarketing convinced me. Apple downloaded for me. Tried to sign up with email account. Took all the steps. Tried to input a country other than the first in the alohabet-Albania- but could not see the country names. Page where they should appear was just white. I can hear the countries scrolling but there are no names appearing. I scrolled ahead several times to try to get to my country but gave up at Ireland. It is not a simple process to keep trying this way. I prefer not to create new accounts with Google sign in and do jot use Facebook at all. So I cannot create an account..Version: 4.1.2

///closed.standard.scheme (sorry Yukon)Think these three words before sharing any social connections with the app as they will push you hard. stop trying to make it happen *outside of M25* Gretchen — it’s not going to happen.Version: 4.27.4

Wrong addressMy address is incorrect. Do you use google maps? Drivers using it have gone to the wrong using it..Version: 4.7.3

FailDoes not run at all on my iPhone 4s, it sits on the intro screen then crashes out..Version: 2.8

Dangerous and misleading - DO NOT USEDisappointing to read that you mislead people by claiming your app is endorsed by a well respected rescue organisation. You use unauthorised photos as well. Based on this deceit, I will discourage anyone from using this app..Version: 4.11

Tutorial completely uselessTutorial completely useless for someone who knows a 3 word address and wants to go there. Application provides no assistance as to how use the 3 words to find an address. Remarkable!!.Version: 4.2

Great product poor marketingWhat3words is a great product, super helpful in many situations but, this will not save your life in the wrong situation. If you are in the middle of the Moab dessert or some other remote location that doesn’t have data services then it’s useless. The marketing claims it will safe your life, but only in the right conditions. Do you have data or voice service, great, you can tell someone, but if you have mobile and data service, then your Google maps works, and you walking directions work and you 911 works. This app is great for non-emergency situations to a point. I think it’s greatest potential is for deliveries, I want my DoorDash delivered to me on the beach where there is no address. That would be great. But stuck somewhere with no data or voice, this app is useless… in these instances, Spot or some other pocket sat com system is the only real option..Version: 4.19

What a waste of timeWhat is the point of this app? The blurb says “ What3words is a proprietary geocode system designed to identify any location with a resolution of about 3 metres” What3words gives you 3 totally unrelated words which are all but impossible to remember!!! So what do you do, you write them down, you lose that piece of paper or you save them on your smart phone; which means you have to setup something or somewhere to store them. GPS coordinates do exactly the same but you just press a button and store them; and are at least as accurate if not more so! W3w is used in adverts so again you have to make a note, somehow. So why not just use coordinates! W3w is the solution to a problem that doesn’t exist!!!!.Version: 4.14.2

Still useless, only map app that only runs in Portrait modeSeriously, how hard can it be to make What3Words run in Landscape mode? This is coding 101 stuff, but apparently not for this app. A Map app that doesn’t rotate is not a map app at all. I have a 12.9” iPad Pro with attached keyboard that I normally use in Landscape mode. Since the app only runs in Portrait mode, I either have to use it sideways with my head tilted 90% left (causing great pain), or unplug my keyboard, physically rotate the screen to Portrait mode, and replug/re-rotate when done, no thanks! If it ran in Landscape mode would be a great app, really - how hard can that be??? Please recognize that some of us run apps in Landscape mode, as this app is truly painful for iPad with keyboard.Version: 3.5.3

Great potential, but.......This app has great potential to get to a much more accurate location than normal GPS, but it has a couple of shortcomings that need to be addressed. First, if you decide to save more than a few locations you will have a hard time finding the one you want since there isn’t any way to sort them. They are just listed in the order you saved them. Until app makers like Apple add 3words to their contact app this is a problem. 3words could at least list them in alphabetical order using the name you set for the location. Second, the voice recognition is useless. I set 3 words to US English and it never locates the correct address. It always finds addresses that aren’t even in the US and the street numbers and names aren’t even close to what I am saying. One other small thing is when I copy an address from Contacts that includes an apartment number or suite number, 3words isn’t smart enough to parse out the apt or suite info so it can’t find the address. I have to edit it out myself manually. Since voice recognition doesn’t work, the app is kind of useless if you are in a hurry. It will also be much more useful if Apple and others add support to recognize the /// as a link so you don’t have to copy and paste the location..Version: 3.5

Is this no good for english speaking canadianIt does not have a option for english canada only usa and if u want canada it says french wth.Version: 4.7.3

Who the heck would add something like this?!If you feel like something strange is going on in your home or common surroundings, check out this app, it’s the creepiest, rapiest app I’ve ever seen. Gives information about your home and life to the worst people!! I added this because I was curious after seeing all these random apps directed towards my life, I instantly noticed why all these crazy creepy things were happening and my home was even broken into numerous times. NEVER HAVE I EVER BEEN SO DISGUSTED W AN APP IN MY LIFE! I’m still trying to get my life together, this gives hints and pointers and access to people all over the place about you and the people in your home and even pin points different areas of your home! This app is dangerous and should be taken down!.Version: 4.19

Download language does not workAny language download will just stuck with 0 byte… well i guess im stuck with UK English for now.Version: 4.27.3

New appWait until I have used it.Version: 4.9

Needs improvementsThis is a very good idea and concept. The app though needs some improvements: 1) A way to actually copy the three words without all the extra text copied with it. Maybe this is in the settings maybe this is a separate ‘copy’ selection. 2) A way to pronounce the three words. Yes there’s a microphone to listen for input but there is no output. 3) selecting neighboring squares around your Geo location is very clunky. The app should have accessed all of the neighboring square data. It should be much quicker than it is. 4) when absolute precision is not necessary, it would be great to have a list of the three words surrounding you. That way it would be easy to find an easy, pronounceable, & fun three word combination. This would be useful for finding a word selection for your house or business when it is acceptable to be off a little bit..Version: 4.1

Really bad gimmickThis system is a disaster: taking in account different accents, tourist and visitors from other countries, using their native language in the app. If you have to spell the words in an emergency, they are far to long. Most people don’t know how to spell accurately The list goes on and on …. This app is actually very dangerous. Ther are alread several great emergency apps that can send exact coordinates by text and email without the confusion What3Words would bring! Please do a little research on Google before you use this app..Version: 4.19

Fun toy, mostly worthlessRequires robust internet connection. No pattern to the words - is ‘robust, internet, connection’ nearby, or far away? Is it even valid? If you receive a 3 word location, and it isn’t valid, what’s the problem - spelling or a misunderstood word, or even 2 misunderstood words? Requires secondary app to get directions - not a show stopper, but a pain to switch. A solution in search of a problem already solved better by LAT/LONG. Sure, you could say nobody knows their LAT/LONG off the top of their head, but you can find it on a paper map. 3 words needs an electronic device and a connection..Version: 3.1.3

Location finding is not reliableThe concept of this app is fantastic! Every 9 square meter area of the planet has a unique three word combination. Very useful to find precise locations, EXCEPT.... it can never quite find me. It’s the only map-related app I’ve used that keeps bouncing around to try and find me. I don’t know why this problem exists. Until it’s fixed, I have to find my desired location on the map myself and choose it. I can’t rely on the app to do it. So until then, three stars..Version: 4.1

Why is the app so big?Why is it 124 MB? It literally just shows a map and some words on the screen. This app should be all of 30MB. Why is this app so bloated? It seems like a waste of space on my device for an app I only ever use once in a blue moon. Please work to reduce the app size and remove unnecessary SDKs, etc..Version: 4.4.1

Interesting Idea - But Not Sold On The NecessityThe concept sounds interesting, but I’m not sure how this is more useful than other apps already on your phone. You open the app and are presented with three words that identify where you’re standing. You then send or otherwise communicate those words to someone else who enters them into their copy of the app, ‘pointing’ to where you are on a map. In order to get someone to you though, the lat/lon coordinates or address needs to be sent to another mapping app for navigation directions. Consider that I Can tap-hold on the included map with my phone, then hit the ‘share’ icon and text, email, etc the precise location - which can then be tapped by the recipient to show my precise location on a map and/or satellite image, with navigation options. Seems faster to me. W3W seems like a linguistic way to point to a spot on a map - but with modern smart phones, which are needed for this app anyway, you can point to that spot with your finger so … why?.Version: 4.9

Quite ComplicatedQuite complicated to sort out. I have had several different three words, it might be that I have not idea what I am doing. We are in a remote cottage so thought it useful to have Thank you for your response, I understand now. I have and iPhone XR. You are absolutely right, the location marker would not stay still even on a table and the three words kept changing, I guess as we were in a very remote area the emergency services would have found us on the one set, hopefully. Fortunate for us we didn’t need them. It is a great product and I feel safer with it than without.Version: 4.1.4
