Calendars 5 by Readdle for Negative User Reviews

Pointless notificationsI have used Calendars 5 for years and loved it. But just recently it’s been sending me pointless notifications that can best be described as advertising and there is no way to opt out. When other apps send me useless notifications, they lose notification privileges. But I have to have notifications on for my calendar app or I don’t get alerts. Fix this Readdle or I will be deleting your app and moving to Fantastical..Version: 5.20.1

Good but could be much betterContext: I’m trying out Calendars 5 after being a long-time Fantastical 2 user who is seeking a switch after their switch to an absurdly-priced subscription model. This review is based on the mobile app experience. PROS: 1) has Natural Language Processing: reliable and rarely produces errors; can even use it to add Repetition to Events 2) has Day and Week views 3) can see a lot of the Event name in Month view, because the text is condensed enough but without feeling cluttered 4) Colour-coded Event names in Month view 5) attractive List view that shows without needing to be expanded the Events’ Location/Info 6) supports GOOGLE MAP 7) Not subscription-based 8) Reasonable and good price 9) Works smoothly CONS: 1) Natural Language Processing is good but not as smart as I’m used to: doesn’t process event Times unless you preface the actual times with “at”; doesn’t process Repetition of events unless you write it in a very specific way e.g. must write “every 2 days” as opposed “every other day”; doesn’t process more specific Repetitions like “every 2 Mondays”/“every other Monday”; doesn’t process Location name unless you select on a suggested actual Location e.g. “at home” becomes part of the Event name rather than processed into the Location section 2) No vertical Week view when phone is held vertically: I really dislike the horizontal view because it doesn’t display the timeline for the days. It only shows the vertical view when I hold my phone horizontally, which I dislike. I have a relatively smaller phone (iPhone SE) so not sure how it is on the normalised larger phones, but other calendar apps still show a vertical Week view on my phone. 3) No Month view in Widget: a Month view—particularly scrollable—would be more helpful than showing just a list of today’s Events. 4) Not customisable enough: can’t create custom Default Event Durations, which already offer limited options; can’t have Weekends be highlighted in Week or Month view; 5) No view of a less detailed Month with list of Today’s Events 6) Limited and unappealing Alert Sounds that are either too jarring, lingers for too long, or sound too unsophisticated 7) No custom main keyboard with a numbers pad 8) Looks slightly dated It’s a good app with core features and then some, but I’m used to having more customisable options and very advanced Natural Language Processing, so Calendars 5 just doesn’t quite live up to my expectations. But given the very good and fair pricing and that it is currently the best alternative to the best calendar app on the market (Fantastical), I’ll try to adapt to it until I find better..Version: 5.17.5

Disappointed and Upset$30 is a lot for a calendar app, especially when there is a perfectly functional free version. I paid because of all the glowing reviews about how I could have a wonderful integrated Tasks+Calendar experience. I also liked that my money was going to a Ukrainian company. They need it. Unfortunately the app fails in two mission-critical areas. #1 You cannot manually force the app to fetch/refresh. Any calendar/task list that does not come from a "push" server will only update every 15mins at best. An instant deal breaker all by itself. #2 You cannot add a task from the Apple Watch. Seriously? I can add an event, which I will never-ever need to do using my watch, but cannot add a task? Weak. Making a quick to-do by hitting a button on my wrist has value. BOTH of these features are available in GoodTask, which is $10 and also has a free-trial. Now I've paid $30 to integrate that experience with my calendar and got...nothing. I feel ripped off..Version: 5.24.7

Good but many missing functionalitiesI’m a big fan of their apps and have paid for a few of them. This is a good calendar app, but many functionalities are missing. For instance, the ability to search through events (!) or to add events as free/busy/private. All these are inherent to the standard iPad calendar. At the moment I need to use both, the viewing and adding events is nicer in Calendar 5, however, searching and fine tuning still requires the iPad one. I hope to get rid of the latter soon..Version: 5.16.2

No good for meThis may be a good app for many, but for me the all-important weekly view is no good at all. It doesn’t calendar block space according to length of event & you can’t see Monday to Monday unless you happen to be looking on a Monday. I have 2 high-pressure jobs, am a part-time student and manage a health condition that requires measured time-spending, so it’s essential for me to be able to glance at any Mon-Mon week and see how full it is and when, so I know where I can add appointments and meetings without making myself ill by the end of the week. This app is no good for that at all. Now I’m hoping they haven’t made it difficult to unsubscribe because that’s just wrong, but as yet I haven’t found a way..Version: 5.16.1

Syncing problems a nightmareI hadn’t used Calendars 5 for some time, then decided to use it because of its good year view as well as its task view and planning potential. Within a few hours I remembered why I dumped it in the first place - it’s syncing with my other calendars was awful, and before I know it I had duplicate meetings appearing, and legitimate meeting disappearing. I am sticking with the reliability of my IOS and Google calendars although they don’t have the same bells and whistlers - at least they are reliable and my meetings dont disappear without trace. Be very very careful using this App!.Version: 5.12.2

Font size too smallThis not practical for me on the iPhone 13 pro max as the font size is too small for me to read . It is not affected by font setting in iOS and there is no way to change font in the program like other calendars It would be good to adjust font size for event title in each view agenda month week etc It is a shame as I have purchased the program and it has a lot of functionality I could use if only the font size was bigger.Version: 5.21.6

Local syncSeemingly unable to access local calendars on early iPod mini... WHERE DO I FIND HELP..Version: 5.20.3

Was a life saver... now thinking of alternativesThe most important thing for me in a calendar is to have an OVERVIEW. This is something that remarkably few Calendar Apps out there seem to do very well, especially on an iPhone. I feel like that Calendars 5, so far has been pretty good. But another thing I loved about this App WAS the date and time input, which was the most intuitive and user friendly option I have encountered. Admittedly, if you are a lawyer who charges for every three minute slots, it had a slight weakness of only working in increments of 5 minutes. Not being a lawyer who charges by the 3 minute slots, I find it pretty much inconceivable that anything in my life needs to be planned to a finer detail than 5 minutes. Anyway - so they changed it and I’m really upset. They used the Native Apple scrolling thing which I also disliked. I emailed them saying that they could have at least kept the previous functions in tact and give you the option. (Sorry) I then asked them if I can downgrade to my beloved version. (No) I then asked them if they are planning to reintegrate the previously fantastic date and time input back into future version. They were pretty tight lipped. If Readdle is planning to reintegrate its easy Inputting System, then I will wait it out. It would be worth it. Would be... Still would love to know..Version: 5.18.5

A waste of money and timeWithout a desktop version this app is totally useless for me. It does not update to dos properly from my desktop to do app. I wish they had a free trial i would have saved myself some money. The intention is good but it need a lot of work before being usable..Version: 5.20.4

Confusing lack of integration with Readdle's own Spark appI've enjoyed Calendars 5 and it is quite nice visually, but I don't understand why there isn't any basic integration with Readdle's own Spark application, whose calendar is far weaker in functionality and usefulness. Forever they've existed as totally standalone apps but I feel like this doesn't make sense logically. On a separate note, I find Calendar 5's event creation area to be irritating. Specifically, I'm referring to where you enter in the event's title and it will use entered times to automatically calculate start and end times. If I'm taking a college course, I can't put "INFO 300", because Calendars will interpret this as a time, 3:00. To me, it makes this functionality redundant and it makes sense to enter the event title and times into Google. To me, this app is only useful for viewing my schedule, and not creating it. Finally, I think Calendars' limited support for multiple accounts is also quite weak, as forcing the user to rely on using the iPhone's internally added accounts past the one account you use to sign into Calendars is annoying..Version: 5.12.2

The update version 5.62This update for Apple Watch I cannot download The new version to iPad Pro. I paid for it and it’s not downloading. It’s a big disappointment.Version: 5.26

Lost appointmentsWhy can’t you leave well enough alone lost everything second last update re entered everything this last update lost everything I entered but then asked to log in to my google account and the other entries re appeared waste of my time using this app. If you going to update make the update an improvement for God’s sake.Version: 5.15.2

Way overpriced for the functionalityAs a shift worker 99% of the calendar apps out there just don’t work. I got this after a strong recommendation from a colleague who swears by it. However she was surprised at the price hike (she paid a few quid a couple of years ago) There are some lovely features and the layout blows iOS out of the water. But for £30 I want the app to be way more flexible and user friendly. This morning I’ve spent 2 hours playing with it and reading the online FAQs. The issue I’ve had may be specific to me but; Even following the FAQ I could not change the colour of any calendar entries, either individually or collectively. When synching, the app duplicated a calendar. For the life of me I could not remove one of the recurrences. If this was reasonably priced I’d have stuck with it. For £30 this needed to be flawless and a massive upgrade on iOS. It isn’t. I’ve requested a refund..Version: 5.26.4

Still bugs to improve and fixClunky app. Hope they can improve and fix because I think it could be better Doesn't recognise any locations I enter. Doesn't sync reliably. Doesn't let me choose colour of an event. Im stuck with the same colour within one calendar. Doesn't recognise reminders that I've amended or moved the deadline or even completed in the reminder app (same developer for both apps).Version: 5.10.5

Waste of moneyBought this as hoped it would be better than the free iOS calendar. It’s no better and very annoying. It automatically sets a default reminder to the day before. I take this off manually for all this and all future events and it still does it. It’s confusing. I want some events to have reminders the day or hour before etc but not on others and it can’t cope with this. I have to delete stuff in the free calendar and this one and it still has issues. I wish I had never spent the money..Version: 5.11.4

Missing one critical feature for meSo this is what looks like a nice clean app. It’s missing one critical feature and one preferred feature for me. Critical feature, contact linking. In iOS calendar, if I type a contact name in, it populated the address for said contact as well when I tap that contact suggestion. Preferred feature, a vertical graphical week view so it’s easy to see where my gaps are for appointment booking at a glance, this horizontal thing is not so useful to me as it doesn’t show gaps. Then I end up having to go from day to day to check. Sure that works but it’s not a quick and easy..Version: 5.12.2

Not for CanadiansEach province has different holidays I do not need to know them all. I want the holidays in my province not the whole country. Could not edit or remove the holiday’s that were not for me..Version: 5.26.5

SynchronisationPar contre je n’arrive pas à voir le même calendrier sur ma tablette que sur mon iPhone.Version: 5.26

Office365Used to use this calendar since day 1! Unfortunately, the company I work for went to office 365 a couple of years ago. Was hoping to eventually see support but I lost hope That was the best calendar app.Version: 5.24.7

Loading and refreshing times are a problemApp is frequently unusable for sometimes as long as nearly a minute (of course based on connectivity - I do recognize that - but I’m referring here to instances when connectivity is strong via WiFi and data connectivity) as it refreshes all data at every launch or open. Can’t view anything in detail. Can’t tap anything. Can’t stop the refresh. I’ve tried all setting combos: on or off background refresh does nothing. Additionally, interactions can sometimes be awkward at various touch and tap points leading to unintended views and items moving or shuffling around. These are deal breaker problems. If you are trying to check items on the go and need key info from your calendar quickly, frustration levels are high. Hopping from meeting to meeting and needing room, floor, or time info is critical for me. I’m often stuck having to stand and wait for the app to fully load before I can view any items. I rely on my calendar but cannot rely on this app. It’s a great app when fully loaded! However, these items kill the whole experience and need for a paid calendar app. I’ll have to delete this app and go back to default calendar apps until this is fixed..Version: 5.11.7

What the what?I would give this five stars if it wasn't for the fact that I live in the USA but yet I have MUSLIM holidays showing up on my calendar and I have no option to change it!! I understand that there are other nationalities, religions, etc. probably using this app too, however, if it is not a United States of America, nationally recognized holiday, I do not want to see it on my calendar. There are far too many religions and beliefs in this world to put them all on the calendar! If you do not want to discriminate and leave them out, then fine, create settings that allow you pick and choose what religion or countries holidays to show on your calendar. As an United States, Christian, European descent citizen, I do not need or want to know holidays of those that think I am an infidel that should be converted or killed. Do you list every pagan and Jewish holiday? How about all of the Buddhist holidays? What makes the Muslim holidays superior to the rest that they are included?.Version: 5.11.10

Great AppEasy to learn and easy to use with great alarm and reminder sounds Downside is the “roller” function for days and times. A pain if I’m entering something on my phone or tablet and not on a stable surface..Version: 5.20.5

Lovely to look at but buggyI’ve had an issue with this app for many months, but support seem unable to help. If I complete a repeating reminder it ‘uncompletes’ after a short time, so I have to complete it again. As a result, two reminders are created for the next occasion so I have to find that date and delete the duplicate. Occasionally there are three or more duplicates. I’ve tried several other similar apps and all handle reminders correctly. This app looks great but until they iron out this bug I’ll stick with one of the others..Version: 5.17.3

Adequate but not greatI find that it sometimes doesn’t let me add an event, ie: it freezes. What I least like about the app is scrolling. It’s very difficult to schedule something for several months in the future because scrolling ahead requires multiple attempts to move the screen. It’s very frustrating to move the calendar ahead for several screens. Also, why doesn’t it default to the current date when I open the app?.Version: 5.21.5

Feed backI wish I could write different color when I make new schedule.Version: 5.26.3

Apple Watch IssuesThis has been my go to calendar app for years but the past few updates have been a bit iffy... When iOS12 went live the app would hang when trying to add new events by holding down on a particular date. After a number of updates, this is now fixed and haptic acknowledgement also confirms success, which either wasn’t present or wasn’t working previously. However, since the introduction of the Apple Watch app, there are new issues. Quite simply, my events are not syncing across to the watch. 100% failing on same day events and hit and miss for upcoming. As such, I’m having to continue with the stock Apple calendar app for complications on the watch at the moment. Looking forward to the fix please..Version: 5.13.1

Very poor implementation of week view, too many steps for event entryWeek view limits the event text to just two small lines while it has space for at least 4 lines. Considering week view is most popular, this indicates very bad implementation of an important calendar view. Also too many steps going back and forth to different screens to just enter basic information about a new event. Clearly the developer does not care as such criticism has been made before and no action taken by developer. The only positive is it allows more than 2 event reminders to be set, not enough to switch from iPhone Apple stock calendar. Most importantly the support is poor and the developer who is a company with some 15 to 20 employees seems only interested in getting your money. If they care to reply I will list the shortcomings of app in an email for them..Version: 5.11.1

Search doesn't workAs a long time paid bundle user, I found the recent enhancements by Google has caught up with Readdle. Or in other words, Readdles functionality has started to show cracks. It's search facility has been unreliable for sometime now so I've switched over to Google..Version: 5.11.5

Potential, but I still don't use itI'm a long time Fantastical user. Before that it was WeekCal. I'm always looking for the next great calendar app. This has potential if they will fix the annoyances. The main annoyance is that I use Outlook/Exchange at work to manage my calendar and tasks. When I do that there are extra spaces/fields that show up on this app that shouldn't be there. For example, EVERY calendar entry or task entry shows the the Notes field whether I put anything there or not. It is usually just blank but it shows up on the app and clutters the display and takes up space. I reported this bug 6 months ago and despite promising to fix it have done nothing. I'm disappointed and wish I hadn't bought this app. I'll stick with Fantastical. Update: It has been about a year now. I’ve emailed them several times about the bug mentioned above. I guess they don’t care. I’m giving up. I never switched to this app and now I never will. Fantastical it is!.Version: 5.11.4

Annoying time issues!I love having the monthly view on my iphone. I like to put in the times at the start of my description of an event, so I can quickly scan and see the times when I have things on and I like the full coloured bar to see easily the category. However it is so annoying now, as when I try to write a time in an all day description, the app decides for me to remove the time from the description and add my event as a timed event. It is infuriating me! It should be up to me what I write in my description and if I wasn't this as an all day event, not decided by the app!! It used to work fine until a recent-ish update! PLEASE have a settings option to choose to toggle on/off "automatically detect times". I don't want this on!!!! I can see for some this might be beneficial, but for others it is not and it takes me ages to try to get around this problem each time and sometimes I have even lost times by the app doing this as it has added the timed event itself at the wrong time! Really messing up my plans! PLEASE fix and give an option! Would also benefit from scrolling down to the next month so can have 2 months split over one screen view, as in the apple calendar..Version: 5.10.5

I like this calendarI refer to this calendar daily, and enjoy the colour contrast available for different events. Generally easy to use, but I have been caught out a few time when adding/ editing appointment times. The app doesn’t seem to like the ‘edit’ function..Version: 5.11.1

Random timing of notificationsThis would be by far my favorite calendar app based on interface and usability but for the fact that it randomly sends alerts at the wrong times, sometimes days after the event has already happened. I have contacted the developer about this a couple of times, but the problem has persisted. If they ever fix this, the app will be close to perfect. I hope they will also release a Mac OS version. UPDATE: the app is still failing to send alerts in a timely fashion. A few days ago, I received an alert for an event that had occurred 3 days earlier. I again notified the developer. This is the only app of any kind that I use that has this problem, so I really don’t understand why the problem has not been fixed. I have lowered my rating from 4 to 3 stars because of the developer’s lack of responsiveness for well over a year in fixing this bug..Version: 5.17.2

Please redesign widgetsPlease redesign your widgets. I just use the Apple one because the Calendars 5 widgets are so ugly. Please just make it minimal and copy Apple’s so I can tap yours and open the app I like. :) Previous: Still don’t know why there are two different calendar apps from this company. There’s no obvious differentiation. Just kill the blue one. I can’t stress enough how excellent this app is. The app has a fantastic UI, the different views (tasks, list, day, week, etc) are usefully laid out. Didn’t initially give this app a chance. I was a long time user of another app but they created a subscription service. Bye bye. Calendars 5 has a great UI, the natural language works well, which is why I use it, and there’s no subscription. Totally worth the upgrade! Love it! Would really love to see a variety of minimal widgets similar to Apple Calendar and after using it for a while, the natural language could use some improvements as it doesn’t always understand what I’m typing..Version: 5.24.6

Not syncingSuddenly after the recent update, calendar5 does not sync with all my devices - sad.Version: 5.18

Mostly FineAs per the title this app does some really cool things however; you used to be able to use speech marks so that if you type a number it didn’t make that the time of the reminder. Same with many words etc... but this is no longer possible and definitely a step backwards which is a real shame. Overall a reasonable app that with a few tweaks it could easily become a great app..Version: 5.11

Week numbering needs workIt’s all very well to include week numbering. It’s a good idea. But if you are going to do that, please give us the option to define the numbering. University and college school calendars keep track of week numbers (of course), but Week 1 does not start on January 1st. Without being able to adjust this, the features is essentially useless for college students..Version: 5.20

MessyThis is just a rehash of the stock ios calender dolled up. It says in the description you can add “interesting calenders” as a one off or subscription. Sorry...can not find this option anywhere. You are best to look elsewhere..Version: 5.17.4

ChangesDo not like the changes they have made in the recent update.Version: 5.18.4

Good app but.....Overall this is a great app, but I am not happy about being pestered to write a review on it if I don't have time to do so. There should be an option to decline reviews as not everyone wants to write them for every conceivable app on their device..Version: 5.4

Okay. Not the high quality I normally expect from readlleThe choice of how to layout the various views are excellent. Especially the week view. However there are some annoying design choices and issues: 1. The location feature is powered by four square instead of Apple or google maps. This means you cannot simply add an address of something that isn't on four square, like your friends house, client offices etc. This is personally a deal breaker. 2. The app also looks dated compared to fantastical and Apple calendar. It’s incredibly... ‘gray’. There is text where icons and colours would be better. It’s hard to tell at a glance who’s excepted and rejected meeting invites. Colour coding or icons would be better. 3. Switching views is also cumbersome on larger screens as the option are hidden behind an icon at the top of screen. And the list view is so drab it’s hard to tell where one day end and the other begins... It's a shame because the natural language search and brilliant density of the month view are ahead of the competition, especially fantastical. If they can fix the location features and update the UI, this could be a winner....Version: 5.11.4

UPDATE: get locations and some modern looksMaking an appointment could have a better interface. You have to select a time from preset choices and save it after each step, then go back and edit location, reminder, etc. However, my big problem is the lack of locations. I put a lot of concerts on my calendar and the app doesn’t have Nationwide Arena (an NHL team plays there, so it’s kinda a big place) but does have a 50 person mom and pop bar that’s in a back alley. How is that? If you’re going to have location as an item to add to an event then it should be like any map app and have common locations. Even entering an address doesn’t always work. I have to save it as a “Custom Location.” Finally, there is no date on the app icon. Yes you can turn a badge on that shows the date but in this day and age the app should easily show the date..Version: 5.11.5

Do not use this appI was adding items in my calendar on my iPhone using this app. What I did not realize was that it was not syncing with my gmail as I had set it to, and so other devices did not reflect my iPhone. Therefore my gmail was not up to date. I checked my iPad and none of my iPhone entries was uploaded and synced. When my iPhone app updated I lost everything. All was gone. Better off using your stock calendar or google calendar. That’s it..Version: 5.20.2

Loved this appt DO NOT DOWNLOAD WIDGETSI have used this app for years and loved it. I just downloaded a new widget and it completely messed up my phone. It hid key apps - phone, camera, etc- so I can only access them by searching. It removed all my folders for apps. So now my Home Screen is full of my least used apps. Total mess..Version: 5.27.3

Could be better but still greatIt’s an awesome app for someone who is as visual as I am and prefer my reminders to be in the same place as my calendar (for work and appointments etc). By I wish I could sync with my iCal so that iCal imports an appointment created in Calendar5 for my MacBook. Or is there a way to troubleshoot this without downloading Calendar5 on my MacBook?.Version: 5.11.9

Doesn't work properly anymoreBeen using happily for a long time and found it easy to use and visually appealing and useful. However I recently started missing events and noticed certain items were not showing on the app. My setup is pretty complex as I use the app to join a diverse number of calendars from different sources, however this was the appeal of the app for me, which when it was working was providing me with a single view. Unfortunately I now have to look for a different solution. (Not a calendar or access issue, some events from the same calendar source show, when others don't).Version: 5.10.5

Loved this app till IOS 17 update…It leaves you no choice but to give it full access to your data. No, thanks. I’ll be finding another calendar app..Version: 5.27.3

Seems to be getting worse everytime they do a downdateI tried to setup a calendar event in the future and to repeat every 3 months but of course now you can’t do that since you can only repeat up to 30 days or up to 4 weeks with the month and year options now missing for this task or removed to “streamline or improve” the application or whatever you’re lame excuse is. By the way you can do this in the native apple calendar app so I will using that from now on and will be deleting this now useless app when I’m sure there is nothing in there that is not being carried over..Version: 5.25.2

When is it coming on Macbook Pro?Hi there, I paid for this app but seems like it is not availaible on my macbook pro. Many other apps are. Is it coming there and if yes in how much time?.Version: 5.20.2

It works but could be betterI picked this planner because I prefer a monthly layout. You can get the monthly lay out when you first open which I love. I few things I don’t like - when you type in an appointment like for example I have a niece and her name is Wednesday so I tried typing “Wednesday’s Birthday” and it keeps reverting and making me put the Birthday on a Wednesday. There is no way around this. Also if you try to type like “bring 2 pens” it forces you to place it at 2pm and also removes the “2” from the description! I run into this issue more then I’d like. I like color coating my appointments which it does allow you to do but I wish there was a way to make set colors like blue is birthdays, green is days off, yellow is school etc but it doesn’t have this capability yet. Each time you have to try and remember what color is for what after you type in your description..Version: 5.11.10

Massively disappointedIf you want your gadgets to sync, don’t use this app. I have been using it very successfully for several years and it has been a brilliant app. However, now it suddenly no longer syncs my iPad with my iPhone. I have exchanged two emails with the support team, followed all their instructions and those on their website, but all to no avail. It takes them the best part of a week to get back to me each time I contact them, and there is no contact number or chat facility. And just to add insult to injury, voice recognition does not work with this form so I have had to type everything long-hand!.Version: 5.16.1
