EWG's Healthy Living for Negative User Reviews

WorthlessThe app didn’t recognize a single barcode. Maybe it’s not available in Canada. Not worth it.Version: 2.2.4

Science backed… NOThis app is SO misleading. Some ingredients they claim are bad are in some of their top picks because surprise! They get bribed easily. Also Parabens are one of the few preservatives that we know are safe with long term safety data. The researcher who said it causes breast cancer was feeding rats their own body weight of parabens… of corse it’ll harm them. Dose makes the poison and no dose creates poisonous products infected with mold/viruses/bacteria ETC. Everyone was scared of parabens so they switched to the less researched phenoxyethanol (which is actually a pretty good preservative), now people are getting scared of that so we’ll probably be switching to a different preservative that’s even less researched and so on. I’ll take parabens and the 100+ year safety data..Version: 3.0.7

Please add more productsThe app is great to shop with, my only frustration is there are only a certain amount of items so I have to keep scanning several different items until one pops up that is registered with the EWG app but it’s fantastic when I finally find something that has a good rating. Thank you EWG and please keep updating products and adding more products to your list. JP.Version: 3.0.5

Needs improvementEWG is helpful to some degree, but you still have to do your own research in order to find out how safe each product really is. In the ingredients list, one should be able to tap each listed ingredient and obtain its chemical analysis i.e. hazards to skin, hazards to environment etc. A link to a credible source like PubChem would be really good, if you click on any listed ingredient. Limited database. Please add more products..Version: 3.0.6

Nice idea but app is awfulScanner is really poor... 10/10 scans failed. Why release this as a feature? Wait til your database is hooked up before turning on something that is non functional. Also the database response time is soooo slow. Love the idea please make this work..Version: 2.2.1

Doesn’t workI don’t know why the location Canada or USA makes any difference but the browsing doesn’t work either..Version: 2.2.3

Need more search optionsI would like the ability to look up single ingredients.Version: 3.0.6

EWG verified products cannot be trustedI just bought a lip balm from Honest because it had the EWG stamp of approval but as soon as I got it out of the box, I saw that the product is contained in a tub of #1 plastic, which is known to leech chemicals. Instead of relying on this app, one should do the research on products, ingredients, and packaging on their own. Clearly, this app is another way to get people to throw away what they've already purchased, and purchase more things under the guise of being "healthy" or "safe for the environment" without actually being either.Version: 3.0.6

Doesn’t recognize most productsToo bad it doesn’t recognize most products..Version: 3.0.7

Search results is confusingCan't find what I actually searched..Version: 1.0.4

Has barely any products on itI use this for skin and body care, but 9/10 times I look something up or scan it it’s not on the app. So in other words this app is completely useless. Why even develop something that doesn’t even do the one thing that it’s meant to do? I just don’t understand..Version: 3.0.8

Not enough “normal” every day productsI want to be able to go into Target or Walmart and find affordable products that I can scan. About 80% of the products you scan aren’t even in the data base. This is highly annoying. I understand that there are small businesses out there that provide super pure products. These are usually only available online and are very, very expensive. Please please please expand your data base..Version: 3.0.7

I don’t understand the rating systemI believe the developers really need to consider other factors that should be used when rating items, ESPECIALLY animal treatment/welfare. I didn’t see any information about animal testing or ingredients in the make up section. When it comes to animal proteins, I am seeing proteins that are pastures and grass fed get LOWER ratings than animal proteins from factory farms (like Fosters). I appreciate that there is a rating with plant-based and chemical ingredients, but a lot of work needs to be done to adjust the rating system. As a registered dietitian, I will seldomly recommend this app to my clients since I am not 100% confident in the information given..Version: 3.0.6

UserI scanned 6 products, none known to the database . Total waste of time..Version: 1.0.4

Inaccurate InformationThis app is a wonderful idea if the owners would fact check what people are uploading. Or, what employees are entering based on user scans? Not sure what the problem is, but there is a problem in accuracy and reliability. How about adding a “report discrepancy” option in the app? For example: Peanut butter, Natures Promise organic crunchy, EWS score of 1-when you look at the nutritional label, it does not have saturated fat recorded, which is 2.5%. Organic Teddy creamy PB is scored 3.5 for too much saturated fat, but has the same as Natures Promise? Hampton Farms Organic Natural Peanut Butter, score of 1.7, again, the saturated fat is not recorded properly on nutritional label. And findings are the same as Natures Promise but scored differently? Is nutritional label wrong somewhere else again?.Version: 3.0.6

Getting there, but needs to fix bugs and add inventoryScanned a few items that had some info, but all were organic so they were in the system. Something non-organic was harder to find. As for the bugs, I tapped on a tab for more info regarding a product and it froze on that page and I am unable to get back to the main page..Version: 1.0.4

Well this is not of a downer :0/EWG opened my eyes to the risks in municipal water supply and I was more than happy with their coverage of daily chemical exposures form packaging and foods, however, as curious as I was to try their product ratings app they fall short, very short, on the latest metabolic health guidelines from many many prominent medical sources. Seed oils, sugars and suspected fillers and conditioning agents are an absolute must to call out on products but really are we still hating on saturated fats! When I see produce whose only misdemeanor is that it has a saturated fat and little nutrition like cocoa nibs, good saturated fats and polyphenols how does is score worse than a carbonated water with ‘natural’ flavors? As always do you own research, cross reference multiple sources, eliminate and replace from the worst up. I acknowledge this is a not for profit organization and it is essential we are informed my not food industry sources that twist the reality with nice sounding ingredients, like forever meats! We all deserve good nutrition, thanks EWG for getting this big meat ball rolling.Version: 3.0.8

Not working in CanadaEverything I click comes up blank.Version: 2.2.3

Very Useful But Has LimitationsI use this app a few times a week. It helps me find items for my home, body, and more that really do nourish me and my family and at the same time care for the one world we have around us. This is the sifter sifter for truth in our products. I am grateful for this tool. However, there are many times I cannot find a product or have difficulty searching the app properly. It would be great if there was a place to submit requests and get help within the app..Version: 3.0.9

Great concept but app doesn’t work wellGreat concept but scan and search options don’t always work, even after closing and reopening the app.Version: 3.0.6

Great concept… Lots of good stuff… But…I’m concerned about the app security because I had created a list and submitted products for review, and now that I login sometime after, I no longer have a present list, and when I look up my submitted products, it shows products that I did not submit. Somehow someone else’s information got into my account, and my information is now deleted. Additionally, previously it was easy to add products for review, and now I do not see that option in my app..Version: 3.0.5

Doesn't workThis app worked for me when it first came out a few years ago but not anymore. It's especially useless in Canada..Version: 2.2.3

Pretty good, could be betterI appreciate how informative the app is, and how neat the categories of risk are displayed. However, users should be able to submit product requests without a barcode. Not many makeup products have barcodes outside of the packaging they come in, which leaves a pretty large gap in information and availability for people who have and who use makeup that isn’t brand new. I’ve also noticed that irrelevant items are included in the results of searches with specific brands and keywords..Version: 3.0.6

Buggy AppThe app is useful if a few things happen: If when you tap on any product, it shows you the info- most of the time, nothing happens when you tap on it; if the product you’re looking for is even listed; and if the product has any info at all. When all of these things happen, it can be useful. Otherwise, this app is infuriating..Version: 3.0.7

Wish it worked betterClicking on products only works some of the time, this could be a great app I’d use often if it worked..Version: 3.0.7

Great in theory….I just started scanning my products to learn more, but I’ve already had to add 80% of my stuff and my things are not super unique. When I scan, I have to submit the product… over and over again. Once I decided to word search it instead and it did show up. But because it was filtered by keywords, I couldn’t click on it to save to my own list! A lot of quirks to be worked out. Idea is good but serious app attention is needed to make it be what it’s supposed to be. Frustrated…..Version: 3.0.9

Pay to playHeard your scores are based on companies paying for results. Not pleased..Version: 3.0.6

Useful app, butThe scan does not work on iPhone 8 but it does on an older iPhone.Version: 2.3.1

Does scan productsNever worked.Version: 3.0.7

Search for ingredient not possibleI used to be able to search by a specific chemical or ingredient. No longer. It would be so useful to be able to look up a particular chemical or compound so that one can make educated decisions across products. Now it’s oversimplified, actually making more work as you have to look up each individual product. Works more like marketing now..Version: 3.0.7

Where’s the dirty dozen/clean 15Considering this is part of EWG, I would expect a menu item to have the clean 15 and dirty dozen. At a minimum, a link to EWG’s page containing them..Version: 2.2.6

DisappointingExcellent app in theory, however, it is disappointing to find none of the very common products I've scanned in the database. It seems Skindeep is recruiting its users to complete the database for them..Version: 1.0.4

Potential is greatNot enough products available yet but I think they are working towards it. Great idea! I would pay a small fee for this if it had a bit more in it. I would like to see a dictionary of the chemicals with their related health concerns listed so I can check on ingredients on products not listed yet. Thanks!!!.Version: 1.0.10

Scanning barcode brings up wrong product; can’t submit itI love using the app to select products I am considering purchasing. I even donate to EWG because I value this app. Today, I was disappointed in the app. I tried scanning the barcode for the dietary supplement “Vital Proteins Original Collagen Peptides”, a widely available product - even available at Costco - and what came up was “AspenClean All Purpose Cleaner, Grapefruit & Lavender”. I searched on the name and nothing came up. There is not a way in the app to submit the product unless scanning the barcode brings up no results (something I practice all the time when a scan brings up the option to submit the product). I’d love it if EWG added another option for submitting a product for review..Version: 3.0.6

UselessOf the ten products I scanned, only one barcode was recognized ... a Gillette aftershave. Colgate toothpastes? Nope. Various major brand shampoos? No. Deodorants? Again no. Big waste of time. Why release an app like this with such an incomplete database?.Version: 1.0.4

Not yet useful due to the limited database. But well executed and a great concept. There are so many products out there and most of them aren’t in the app making it kind of useless until the database gets filled in. If the app gave the user the ability to lookup ingredients they read on the label of a product then they would be able to make an informed choice about items not yet in the database..Version: 2.3.2

Fewer products on the appAbsolutely love this website, and love how you can save products on the app. HOWEVER, there are many products available on the website that are not on the app!! I started on the website and found, for example, 10 kinds of mascara from Pacifica. Then after switching to the app I searched again and found 2. What a bummer. It’s great that all the info is free! But I find this site so valuable I would gladly pay for the app, if only it was as robust as the website. Hope to see it fixed soon!.Version: 3.0.9

Cannot view or update multiple listsOnly one list works. I keep getting the message. “Something went wrong, please try again later”. I shut down the app and reopen it several times, but I still get the message. I deleted the app and reinstalled it, and I still cannot view or update my list. I don’t know if other people are experiencing this problem but you need to fix it right away because it is rendering this app useless. I will not recommend it..Version: 3.0.6

What the women?I was excited to try this App as I saw it reviewed a few places and it seemed like it was going to be helpful. The main reason I began looking for an app like this was to further research tampons. It became abundantly clear that zero women were involved in developing the app as under the “Personal Care” section there is a “Babies & Moms” category which literally only has baby stuff including diapers & a “men” category… no women’s category. Yes many other categories include women’s items but it’s absolutely bonkers that we’ve been reduced to being moms only and that the category did not even include women’s products including feminine care and hygiene products. The disorganization of the app makes it confusing and very user-unfriendly. Hoping to update my review in the future as changes are made!.Version: 3.0.9

Doesn’t work anymoreBeen using for ab 6 months, I love this app and it’s concept. I love how it has made me aware of what I am putting in/on my body. I use it mostly for cosmetic products and I’ve learned a lot from EWG. However, recently every time I go to search it says “something went wrong try again later”. It’s not a network issue, it’s an app issue. I can go online and do anything else. I even updated the app thinking that might fix this bug but to no avail. Even the barcode scanner does nothing. This app is useless now. I wish it would work again. It was my favorite..Version: 3.0.7

Doesn’t recognize any productsEvery time I try to scan any product it doesn’t come up. Maybe it doesn’t work in Canada, I have no idea. 🤷🏽‍♀️.Version: 2.2.6

EWG AppI love the idea of the app but find that so many things I’m searching, are not in the app. Especially Canadian products and lines..Version: 3.0.9

I love it so much BUTBut is missing a few product .....it really good anyways you can see all the ingredients ,the quantity ,if these is ok or it toxic. So I can tell that I love it , I like I know what I put on my face ..Version: 2.2.5

Good, but needs improvementThe app isn’t as comprehensive as their website. I go to the website (and not app) to get more detailed information about their rating system. Some information by product differs depending on if you are looking at the website vs. app. It leads me to wonder which is better updated to reflect changes in product ratings, etc. Lastly, I would love the addition of a dark mode on the app..Version: 3.0.7

Does not show critical chemical in toothpasteA nice app but i found it odd that the analysis of Colgate Total toothpaste does not show the banned chemical triclosan..Version: 2.3.1

Great idea - poor qualityThe overall idea of the app is wonderful. We need to know what products are safe. We need to know what brands to look for when shopping. In all reality the app isn’t user friendly. The scanner quality is really bad. And the majority of the items you scan the app doesn’t recognize. Most people don’t have the spare time to constantly upload new products. For me the purpose of downloading the app was to help me decipher what products I should / shouldn’t be buying. Since the app doesn’t recognize most products it’s not very useful for me. I will use it for reading suggested products at home but it’s completely useless for shopping in the store. I guess I’ll have to stick to the Yuka app in the meantime and hope ewg works through this..Version: 3.0.9

Good, could be better.I like being able to have an app that shows me what products have toxic chemicals and what they effect. I can also find ewg verified clean products through specific filters. However, my main frustration is it’s a bit messy when it comes to finding products on my own and adding them to my lists (only 5 products each list….). I hope in an upcoming update they make it where each list can have 50+ items on them. Overall, great app, just needs a few updates and fixes..Version: 3.0.9

Garbage App. Just Use Website. This app is horrible. Not only does it not recognize ANY barcodes I scan, but it has a horrendous database that is so unorganized and missing even the most popular products. There are also multiple entries of the same product, with slight variations to the name. This tells me that there is none at all - or absolutely poor - oversight to any and all items in the database. What a waste of time and development. Either create a good, functional all, or get lost!.Version: 2.2.4

So much potentialI would love this app if there was more cosmetic brands, sadly most popular brand are left out and i don’t understand why they can’t add more. There should be a section where people can add brand/specific products they use so the app can be aware of what is commonly used..Version: 2.2.7

Nice, but has flawsThis app is a great starting point for researching products, but you can’t take everything at face value. I’ve noticed verified products with ingredient lists that don’t match the list on the products own website. Also I don’t think the submitting products tool works at all. The submission date updates to the current date no matter when you submitted it. So the app shows products I submitted almost a year ago as being submitted today and there is no customer service or contact info in the app. I was able to find an email contact for EWG online, but months after emailing I never got a response. So this is a good place to search and get ideas, but you should always follow up with other sources..Version: 3.0.9

Needs WorkThere are not enough products added. Missing top selling products like Dawn Liquid Detergent, Oribe Haircare, Dove Spray Deodorant, yet it lists a bunch of brands you can only find at speciality stores. Oddly, it listed 5 other Dawn products that are far less known. Not sure how products make the list, but “most commonly used by Americans” should have been at least 1 of the criterion. Moreover, if you search for a Toothpaste, it will likely kicks you over to food tab, despite the item coming up in beauty. Same with cleaning products- likely to go to food tab. Its a terrible search function. Not worth the time..Version: 3.0.6

Does not work.I live in Canada and any item I scan cannot be found. Don't bother with this one..Version: 2.2.2

Great concept but needs workThis app barely recognizes any product I scan (maybe it doesn’t work in Canada?). And my submitted products don’t even all show up and there are some that were not submitted by me. Disappointing..Version: 3.0.4

Interesting app but unable to use the search featureThe app has a large database so far and many categories. I was able to find a few healthy snacks to substitute others. I enjoy the app but I ran into a few problems when using it. The main problem I ran into was the search feature and the barcode scanner feature. Neither are working properly. The feature states that both are not working and to try again later. I tried multiple times to search for products that are knowingly in the database. Even then, the same error message appears. Other than that, the app is informative and points out some of the worst food additives. If possible, please fix the search and barcode scanner features. Thank you..Version: 3.0.9

Great info- terrible appUnfortunately, the search feature is terrible. I type MAC and get no results. 🙁 But the information is amazing..Version: 3.0.8

Few Products FoundThought this would be a great app but it has very few of the products I scanned in database..Version: 2.2.4

Products are inaccurateI’ve seen countless harmful products show up as green completely safe and highly recommended. Do your own research many people have been exposing EWG online for its recent practices the in recent years for starting to take money from companies in order for companies to appear safe. They “claim” they don’t take any money yet the products show up safe when if you can on other apps it shows the same product (ingredients matching) being highly unsafe. Do research and find better alternatives then this app! Your health matters more then a company that values profits!.Version: 3.0.9

Useless AppThe database is far too small which makes this app useless & a waste of space. Time to delete it..Version: 1.0.4

Freezes a tonI can only look up a few items before it freezes and I have to close it out and open it again. Some of the ratings also don’t make much sense which makes me wonder how accurate it is. The organization is also odd, when you look up a brand it doesn’t pull everything up and then you have to search individually.Version: 3.0.9

Needs better browsing filters and sorting optionsYou can search for a particular brand but if unsure what you want and want to browse it’s hard to narrow down options. For example under “browse” I can go to “hair” and then pick from “baby shampoo”, “shampoo”, or “conditioner”. Let’s say I choose “shampoo”. It simply gives me a giant list of shampoos which seems to start for best (being EWG rated). I can’t go in and filter my search with options such as price, hair type (thin, oily, wavy…), hair goal (volume, shine, frizz control, etc.), or even by the ewg rating. Would also be nice if included helpful reviews and had options to sort by ewg rating, price, top reviews…). And would be extra helpful if also included information on where can purchase from and also how the product smells!!! I’d like a nice clean natural product that is good for my hair but at the same time I’d like to be able to weigh the pros and cons and may rather buy a product that is rated a 2 or 3 if it makes my hair softer and has a really nice smell..Version: 3.0.6

NothingI scanned 5 of my beauty products and none are there. They are popular products as well. Useless.Version: 1.0.4

Very disappointedSurprised with how many people use and rely on EWG, that this app is so bad. Tried looking up toothpaste and quinoa was among the top results, among other foods. Tried scanning a few items as well and it freezes in “searching” mode until the phone turns off after 2 minutes, or I turn off the phone manually. I was really hopeful that this app would do what it said, but I cant even use it..Version: 2.2.3

So soThe app is a great idea but I’m disappointed at the amount of products that are not listed.Version: 3.0.9

I love the database but it’s hard to navigateI love the concept I contribute to this working group effort, but the app is quite unwieldy. It’s hard to find what you’re looking for. They have all these different sub categories which is not helpful. I’d much rather be able to plug-in a brand name and the type of item I’m looking at and have some results revealed. Example if I wanted to look up mollies suds dryer sheets I’d like to be able to do that and not have to come up with nothing or going to different categories looking for what I’m looking for or if I enter and dryer sheets I’d like all the results to come up so I can scan through them and see what is acceptable.Version: 3.0.9

Not User-Friendly, Doesn’t WorkI wanted to use this app and see how many toxins I am exposed to since there’s a good possibility I may get pregnant within the coming year. I can’t scan a barcode to bring up anything, nor can I click on the search results. It seems the app has stopped working. It’s also not easy to filter searches or look through the recently added products. I guess I won’t be using this app, then..Version: 3.0.6

VERY finickyI like this app for the information it is supposed to provide, but I can type in a product at one time and it will pop right up. I can enter it an2nd time and it will tell me "product not found" or the equivalent to that. Also, to search, you have to be in the correct category for the app to find your product. Therefore, if you are in the "household cleaners" area, you can't easily search for makeup in the search bar without physically changing the category. Sometimes I scan a product and it does not come up...but I will find it shortly thereafter by typing in the product name. Very frustrating!.Version: 3.0.7

Time consuming with no resultsGreat idea however every time I scan a bar code it is never found. I need to take pictures submit and rarely is there a rating..Version: 3.0.9

Needs workHalf the products I lookup are not listed. I’ve also noticed activity on my account from another user. Meaning my account has somehow gotten synced up with another account. Not cool..Version: 3.0.4

On line works BETTER than the App.Not able to click on or expand, or open drop down menu explaining what is hazardous when you ARE SIGNED in to app!! Can’t create a list either way..Version: 3.0.9
