Metro-North Train Time for Negative User Reviews

No accurate departure timesSurprise surprise, this MTA app looks fine but is not very useful when you’re actually trying to catch a train. Unlike the subway times app, which is accurate about 99% of the time, this app tells you what time your train is scheduled to leave, and rarely has any information about the actual arrival/departure times of the specific trains. The station monitors seem to work, but knowing I don’t have to run from the subway because my train is running 8 (!) minutes late would be very useful. Please do better, MTA..Version: 3.0.2

Ok app, needs a lot of workTimes hardly ever load anymore, no idea why. When you search a station you have to scroll through the list manually - even though it shows you an alphabetical list on the side (like your contacts) touching it does nothing, no quick way to jump to a different part of the list. And the auto refresh every few seconds sends you back to the top of the list even if you're trying to scroll down to see other times. For such a simple concept that others seem to do without problem it makes you wonder why they can't get it right....Version: 1.3.8

Shows no one senior checked it carefully2 Basic flaws 1 Once the train has started, the app disables the journey and cannot check when you are going to reach 2 Often it shows times from 4 am or so and I am unable to see the current train times. Why not at least let flipping through the pages or best show times from 1hr back onwards and that way the 1st flaw will be covered 3 It does not show the latest status of train times accurately, which is misleading. Not sure if this is difficult to get, although I feel this is programming error..Version: 3.0.3

HorrificAfter reading some of the reviews, I thought: "how bad could this app be..." First off, I'd like to thank the MTA for continually raising the fares to the point that driving (even with gas at $2-4 a gallon) is actually cheaper than taking mass transit. Secondly, and this is another thank you to the MTA: thank you for 20+ years of "upgrades" only to have equipment fail on a near daily basis. Thirdly, and on point: it's not as unbelievable as it may seem that the MTA failed at creating an app that: 1) is constantly updated to make it better and improve its quality. 2) Is slower than the A train at peak hours (*side bar: why is the local E train faster than the express A?) 3) I look forward to the next fare hike only to receive less than mediocre service both on the train and with this terrible app. Congratulations, MTA..Version: 1.3.8

A barely-working prototypeThe transit authority has made some real changes to the system over the last few years. This app is not one of them, at least not yet. It's as if someone created a mock-up of what a train time app should look like, but never finished it before releasing it to the public. Train times are available, but only in a short window, and even then, inaccurate. The A-Z search bar is not a search bar, but simply a picture meant to look like something that works. You also cannot search past trains to figure out, say, what time the train you're on is slated to arrive. Until this mess is fixed, just continue using their website for train times..Version: 1.3.8

CrashesEvery time I open the app there’s a white permanent screen. I tried everything from reopening it back to uninstalling to even restarting my phone. I gathered enough thought that this app has a bug, I’m not sure why and what’s going on it’s not a difficult app to understand you guys should invest more time in making it better. Train times also doesn’t show delays and sometimes I search 4:30 a 4:29 train would be at the station and the app shows a 5:00 train very odd..Version: 3.0.7

Nice design but huge problemWas pleased with the streamlined design and look of the app initially. Thought the point of this app was to replace the web based train time page which has real time delays information (which unfortunately is now a daily occurrence on the New Haven line, especially in the am). But during the morning rush found a major problem with the app -- it did not post real time status for trains at all. At 845 this morning the 835 to grand central was no longer listed on the "departing now" page even though at the station (and on the web page) it was listed as 15 minutes late. Only info available was the generalized service advisory that trains on the line are running late. What's the point of this app if it doesn't have real time info? Totally disappointing..Version: 1.2

Needs some workThe app can be a lot smarter by utilizing our location to allow the user to quickly review the schedules. I hate when I'm in a rush heading towards or at Grand Central and I have to manually select that I'm at Grand Central. It makes a difference in catching your train. Also the favorites section should be a favorite. Like most commuter I have a set train(s) that I take to and from work. Can you utilize the notification and let me know the track that my favorite train will be departing/arriving on or if it's running late? Also, it would be a great to create an Apple Watch app as well to allow the same suggested notifications. Please think like a commuter, we already had a long day..Version: 2.0.6

Necessary but not as functionalSo a train app is a requirement if you ride the train daily. You expect it to provide times and up-to-the minute delays which for the most part are accurate. However, if i am unable to scroll through the app or see past one time because the app has failed to keep up with software updates it becomes frustratingly and relatively useless. What was once good is now no longer helpful..Version: 3.0.1

Doesn’t show enough train timesI figured if I add something to my ‘Favorites’ there would be less work. But it’s more work because the 'Favorites' only show about 6 train times and departure time cannot be changed when I’m on one of my 'Favorites' train path. It gets irritating when I’m checking train times at night so that I can find a morning train but can’t even access it through my 'Favorites’ because there aren’t enough train times and the departure time can’t be changed to what it is currently. I then have to type in the origin and destination again. What’s the point of favorites then? I give it two stars because it at least shows accurate times and delays..Version: 3.0.2

Why is it so hard to serve up MNR status data that’s available on station boardsThe latest update broke everything for me, on iPhone Xr running latest iOS. This appears to be the case for others as well, based on recent reviews. I need the app twice a day—when I’m en route to the train station during morning and evening commute—to view upcoming local and express options plus on-time status, and to decide if I need to hustle or can I walk. There are numerous boards at the station which could tell me these things (if I was already inside the station)... how could it possibly be so hard to push that data to an app!? The other “MyMTA” app is also useless for this purpose, somehow. At this point it would literally be easier for them to just post a webcam in the middle of GCT, pointed at the video screens, and let people login to watch it if they need to know train status. Because apparently in 2019 this agency can’t seem to figure out how to send a series of numbers to two places at once..Version: 3.0.3

Not horribleCould be a lot better, but not horrible overall. Suddenly stopped working for past 24 hours. If you use this app I would recommend you also install an app which downloads the timetables permanently onto the iPhone in case you don't have an internet connection or if the app isn't working properly..Version: 1.3.6

Not 100% reliableId say 9/10 times the train times arrival is correct. For a task so simple, its unsettling to have to admit this app isnt entirely reliable especially in a city where every minute counts. To be sitting somewhere and waiting 45 minutes or to have missed a train that wont come until the morning because of an incorrect train schedule is not acceptable. Its not cool. Save yourself the stress, try another app or two as i am doing rn. It is my fifth time waiting for a train coming 40 minutes later. I wont even mention how many times ive missed the last available train to North White Plains..Version: 3.2.6

Needs improvementI can’t for the life of me understand why this app was ever launched without the functionality to see prior train times than current to forward. How possibly can we tell if a train is going to arrive on time if we can’t see past trains. Unless they don’t want us to see that info.....could it be that their poor on time service would be further and blatantly exposed. Fix this app....Version: 3.0.1

Typical MTA,Llike their trains it’s all a great idea and it should work and save time, but poor design and poor execution ruins everything. if you can get the app to load. any search requires a half dozen clicks. buying a ticket? well then of course it needs to switch to a different app, another 1:2 dozen clicks, gets hung up, while the train conductor is waiting for payment. endless frustration due to poor design. MetroNorth, this message is for you: 1) i should be able to buy a ticket with one click! 2) the train schedule i use most should preload all day long for the entire day not some 2 hour slot! that schedule should display on the landing page ! 3) train time and eTix should be one app!.Version: 3.0.1

So close! This is VERY close to a good app. However, if you add a ‘favorite’ - you can’t ever delete it, or re-order how it’s sorted. Additionally, if you use the ‘search for upcoming trips’ it won’t tell you the track number like it would if you had saved it as a search. Also, if you are underground on the subway, and want to know when your next train is (because the subway is running late ;) ) you are out of luck - this app ONLY works when there is internet access. Surely it can’t be that hard to put the train schedule in to this app for offline access. Hopefully this app gets updated soon. It’s very pretty, and I’d love to be able to use it!.Version: 1.2

Keeps CRASHING! White screen upon opening!!What is the point of getting an ‘upgrade’ when this thing keeps crashing?! I now have to look up by going to the internet and doing a search? Such a waste! Bring back the prior version that was there 6 mos ago. Worked far better than this current version. I have to delete and reinstall this app several times a week! C’mon; fix it for good!.Version: 3.0.7

Needs work!I miss the old app. You know the one that automatically populated your regular commuting stations. And the one that showed schedules while offline. A MUST in many circumstances. this app is useless when you are actually in the train station and can't get a signal. Now this complaint is mta and not simply the app. When will you have service in the GCS tunnels where most of us spend a 1/3 of our commuting time. How can one use etickets when there is no cell or internet service!.Version: 2.0.6

Getting better - needs countdownThis informational app has improved in the last year, as several free and more useful apps have dropped out of the App Store and therefore my new iPhone. Unfortunately a very useful feature, a countdown clock for the next few departures, doesn’t exist yet. For regular commuters, quickly referencing how much time is left significantly beats trying to do the math in your head. It’s an app after all, so not really a big ask!.Version: 3.0.2

Train times hidden by broken interfaceI liked this app until they released a new version in which only a tiny portion of the screen allows you to scroll through train times. If there is a service alert the train time section is pushed off the screen entirely and there is no way to dismiss the alert. So the app is is useless when there’s a service alert. An app that was once very useful and easy to use is now broken and frustrating. I hope they fix it..Version: 3.0.2

Functional, but not accurateI have been using this app for the past month without any real issues. There have been minor annoyances, such as the slow loading of the train schedules and not listing an arrival time (only total travel time, so you have to do math!). However, I checked it this morning and saw my train was running 6 mins late, so I calculated my time to the station accordingly, only to see the train departing the station on time, before I could reach it. This leaves me waiting 16 mins for the next overly crowded, standing room only train, not to mention late to work! I figured this would be the best app for seeing real time train delays, since it was developed by MTA themselves, but I guess not. I will be looking for a more accurate app now..Version: 1.3.8

Buggy and unreliableThis app was buggy to begin with, crashing sometimes and freezing and saying I wasn’t connected to the internet even though my WiFi connection is strong... but now?! The app doesn’t work 75% of the time, crashes constantly, and it like to only show me train times for midnight rather than my current time. Just now, the app told me that my 8:40 train, which is 10min late right now, has an eta of 12:47pm. Like, WHAT?! Yeah, why am I using this MTA failure of an app again?.Version: 3.0.3

Poor interface designIt's a huge disappointment that Metro North has released an app that has the look and feel of an app by a novice programming student, and a non-commuter at that. To find schedules for leaving for the office and coming back from the city requires that you set up two trips. The Passenger app and OnTime app each has a button to just switch the stations. Checking for tomorrow's schedule? Good luck. That check can be done in the other two apps with just a few taps. It seems the app is trying to do a lot for MTA and Grand Central but the developer has forgotten that the main function should be to provide fast and easy to access train information for commuters. You'd think the outfit that runs the trains would make sure that their app is the best one for their customers..Version: 2.0.6

Improved by very laggy unpolishedThis is a welcomed updated but it really looks weak when compared to the polish and features offered by the sister LIRR app. I'm seeing trains listed out of order, the map defaults to who knows where and takes a few seconds to scroll to the trains locations every time, dark mode is incomplete and it's missing a ton of grrag features that LIRR includes, like your location in the platform and real-time location of trains..Version: 3.0.6

Ok, but improvements neededWhile the app serves the basic purpose of finding train times, it could use a lot of work. I find that the app rarely reflects accurate delay times. In addition, trains are no longer listed after their scheduled departure time, making it impossible to look at status of the train while you are onboard or if you are trying to pick someone up (I would suggest showing arrival times). The app lets select your home and destination station to easily search for trains without having to re-select these every time (helpful). However, this feature only works if you are looking for trains in the next few hours. If you want to search for a train for later in the day or the next day you are not able to select your saved stations. If you search for trains in the future (for example, the next day) there is a flaw which only shows trains after the time you select. So if you are searching for trains that depart at around 6, a 5:59 train would not appear on the list, but a 6:59 train would..Version: 3.0.2

Missing critical feature. Why can’t I change the departing time of my favorite trips from “now” to some other date on the same screen. Currently, I have to go back to the homepage, create a brand new trip, add the destinations and pick a time. All that just so I can plan my usual travel at a different time of day. This is a huge inefficiency that is easy to fix. I really hope you correct this inconvenience..Version: 3.0.3

Missing some obvious informationOverall the app works fine if you want to find a train departure that gets you to a specific statio at a specific time. But the app falls short in providing some basic information if you deviate from that singular use case. For example, I’m on a train to Stamford and want to see what stops it’s going to make to determine if I could get off at Cos Cob — the app does not make it easy to search for the train I’m on (ie- I can’t search for a train departure in the past, so I can’t repeat the search I used to find my current train) and even if I could find the specific train I’m on, the app does not list all the stops the train is making, so I couldn’t easily determine if the train goes to the additional station..Version: 3.0.3

Bad Update/LIRR version is betterI'm not giving it one star as it is still better than no app at all but here are the problems: 1. The "favorite trip" feature is nowhere near as useful as the "favorite station" feature in the LIRR version. It's far more efficient to be able to quickly search for trips from the six or so stations I use/have favorited than to have a specific trip/specific time saved. If you have to have one of these features the favorite station is the way to go. 2. New update seems to support Dynamic Type but doesn't actually format it properly or allow you to turn it off. Don't want to turn off for all apps so am stuck with barely readable train times. 3. It would be great if they could make icons for LIRR and metro-north apps look more distinct. The tiny type that identifies each is barely legible in the blue. I use both frequently and often open the incorrect app. Thanks!.Version: 3.0.0

Not well thought outThe app seems to work ok but from a user design perspective it is seriously lacking. I don’t think the developers watched anybody use it. Makes you reenter the same data over and over again. Can’t plan future trips very easily. Hope it didn’t cost to much to develop. Look for another app or use your car..Version: 1.3.8

Not sure the purpose.I have a schedule app already. I thought train time was like BusTime or SubwayTime where you could see live train status. This only lets you search "now" and future train schedule. Sure it tells you if a train is late for its initial departure but if you are picking someone up from a train, I don't see a way to check a train that has already departed..Version: 1.2

HorribleBefore this last update, this was a functional good app to rely on. Since then, it doesn’t tell you if the train is on time or running late. It does tell you what track it is on either. You are left in the dark to figure it out for yourself, no help at all with this app. Be aware that this doesn’t tell you or help you at all, only give you a time frame nothing is accurate or the track of the train. You have been warned and good luck..Version: 3.2.0

Annoying if looking for trains arriving nowThis app is fine if you’re trying to catch a train, with the ability to find trains that are leaving at a given time, but if you’re picking up someone coming in on a train, this is really cumbersome. If I’m picking someone up, I can’t just say “show me trains arriving now”. And if I say “show me trains departing now”, the train that I’m looking for is not listed (because it already gone, although it hasn’t arrived yet). So, you have to manually backdate the departure time. For example, it’s 4:35 and I want to confirm what time the 3:54 train arrives, I can’t just show the current trains, because the 3:54 is not on the list. So, I have to explicitly create a new “favorite trip” for trains leaving, say an hour ago, and only then can I find the train I’m interested in. When showing trains, either let me search for “trains arriving now” or when showing me the “trains departing now”, include all of those trains that have left but have not yet arrived..Version: 1.3.7

Needed improvementsGreat app. Friendly look. I would suggest making a feature allowing the user to see trains that have past and train progress. For instance if your on the train this way you can track your progress. The feature could also darken the stops that have passed or something like that. Good app but needs to be tweaked.Version: 1.3.8

Online schedule still more convenientUpdate looks pretty, and some new features seem nice. But you still can't see information for departed trains, and when you search for trains it still does not give the trains leaving before and after your search. For instance I did a search for a train arriving at grand central at 1 pm and it gave back only trains that arrive AFTER 1, the first of which was 1:35. It did not suggest the earlier train which would arrive at 12:35. The online schedule interfaces does this for you, I do not understand why this isn't possible on the app.Version: 3.0.0

Screenshots are straight-up faked, no crowding dataThe MTA has put out a bunch of PR about how they added real-time crowding data to this app. The release notes say that they have added this feature. The screenshots portray such a feature. And yet, in fact, there not actually any crowding data of any kind anywhere in the app. It is mystifying to me what they hope to accomplish by making this claim that anyone can see is false in ten seconds of using the app..Version: 3.1.1

ONeeds an updateIt tells you the schedule, which it's supposed to do, and has the connecting trains too (unlike onTime). However, whenever you look at the schedule and you scroll down, the thing resets back to the first time frame you requested. It's extremely annoying when trying to look at all the possible trips for one day.Version: 1.3.8
