Hole19: Golf GPS Range Finder for Negative User Reviews

Good but some issues existIt is one of the better gps systems I’ve tried. I will suggest trying it. Here are my issues: 1) It can be slow at times. But this has only been noticeable not annoying. 2) It is almost always glitchie on launching at a course and getting connected to my watch. But it has always worked in time for my first tee shot. 3) This one is very annoying - at least one time during every round (except one noted below) I am not able to enter a score to go on to the next hole. It might be related to push notifications. Last round I activated privacy mode and was not bother by this problem. 4) Another annoying one is touch responsiveness on both the iWatch and the phone. Why is a mystery that needs solving. Scoring on the watch is the most noticeable. This is really annoying. Items 3 and 4 are a big deal in my mind. If these are fixed my rating would go to 4 or 5 stars. For now I am thinking of going back to my old Garmin unit that is not buggy at all..Version: 5.4.5

The most annoying app I’ve ever ownedI had the paid version of this app, but had to uninstall it completely. My purpose for the app was to use with my Apple Watch, but the app is unacceptably buggy on Apple Watch. It will not allow you to close it. If you close, it will reopen into a round that does not exist on the phone app and drain your battery. If you delete the app from the watch, it will reinstall itself and reopen. I had to uninstall it completely, and uninstall the phone app to stop it from taking over my watch. The app itself was OK for GPS yardages when using it, but the bugs (or horrible design) render this app unusable for me. I will keep looking for a better option..Version: 5.35.8

Just ok!Hole 19 is a great idea, but in the end there’s just too much faff. I found taking my phone round in my pocket annoying for a start. Yes you can put it on your trolley, but what if you have a bag? If you forget to input after a shot then what, that’s easily done, especially on putts. Finally I’ve found it eats battery like you would not believe! (I do have an iPhone 5) so that might be my issue to be fair. It has also on occasion just stopped working half way through my round. Hole 19 is a good tool to use if you are in bounce games with friends and if you are strict about your inputs and don’t mind a bit of faff. For me though, you better off getting gap tested and buy a rangefinder. Then howdidido (club competition computer) will do it for you..Version: 5.24.0

Apple Watch glitchI used the app on my Apple Watch last weekend and for some reason I cannot close it on my watch and the course keeps coming up on the watch face. I have used it for a couple years without this issue and it’s very frustrating. I ended up deleting the app and resetting my watch and phone and that worked. Not sure however if this problem will happen again next time I play golf??.Version: 5.35.0

If you free version user, do not upgrade to premiumI downloaded the map during the free version and upgraded to premium. I have no choice to continue using the low-quality maps I downloaded. Hole19 say that high resolution map will be automatically downloaded as soon as wifi is connected but it doesn’t. Also deleting the app and reinstalling it doesn't help..Version: 5.42.2

Good AppI find the app useful for distance, scoring and length of time to play a round. The stats are helpful. However, it would be great to be able the vary your start hole. My clubs rotates between the starting hole being 1 or 10. The app. Is not friendly when we start on 10. Thinks the round is over after competing hole 18 (which is the 9th hole). Also play different events throughout the season that are shot-gun starts, which the app. does not allow for. Finally, my course has four sets of tees and has for years, but the app. only has three not recognizing the senior tees, which play sometimes. Small issues, but in general the app. serves my needs..Version: 5.39.1

Good app, but annoying to use with iWatch 3-4I really like this app, but I find its inability to use the GPS in my watch hugely irritating. I leave my phone in my bag and will often leave it in a convenient location and walk to my ball, at which point the yardage is incorrect as it’s using the phones gps. Apparently if I remember to start the app, start a round and then switch off Bluetooth from the settings menu (not the shortcut menu), it will use the watch’s GPS but then you can’t update your score in the phone from your watch!!! Such a simple problem to resolve but they seem more interested in new features rather than making an existing one work properly..Version: 5.19.0

Regret paying for upgradeI use an Apple Watch and for basic yardages it is ok but not always accurate. Beyond that it offers very little… you can track scores but if you are looking for shot data, forget it. I have already cancelled subscription and moved on..Version: 5.49.0

Better Free Than PremiumThis app is a great value as a free app. Not so as a paid one. I upgraded to premium via the Apple App Store. I am using an iPhone 11 pro max with iOS 13. I do get the upgraded maps, but when I select advanced scoring, I get no screen to input a score, either on the phone or watch. It just goes to the next hole. I’ve restored the app; I’ve deleted the app, reinstalled, and restored the app with no success. The scoring does work with simple scoring, but I didn’t have to pay for the upgrade to get that! The app, phone, and watch are upgraded to the latest versions. Update: Hole19 Tech support reported that the advanced scoring features are only available on the iPhone, not the Apple Watch taking away Hole 19’s best feature-use on the watch. Paying for the pro version is a waste of money..Version: 5.25.1

MapsI have found the GPS useful and overall the app has worked for me. The maps are not always up to date with correct indexing so be sure to score your paper card and not rely on the stableford points feature.Version: 5.34.5

Good for what it wasAbsolutely loved this app and used it for every round. This year when I went to sign up again for the paid service, they removed the tier system they had and lumped it all into one premium subscription. For the below average golfer like me that only gets to play once or twice a month, and can only play from April to September/October every year, it doesn’t make sense to buy an annual membership that includes a bunch of different features I’ll never use. I never pay for subscriptions on any app, but I had no problem paying $4 a month just for Apple Watch gps and scoring features, because that’s how good the app was..Version: 5.51.1

Was good for a whileTLDR: constant moving of features behind paywall makes Hole19 not compete with other apps like 18Birdies I have been a user since May 2015 during the beta testing and spent time providing feedback and suggestions from the beginning. (Some they actually implemented) Through the years Hole19 got both better and worse. Better due to better performance but also worse because they would move features to the Subscription side. While losing features (and gaining ads) is annoying, I get that they are trying to compete with other apps for both market share and revenue. And while I tried other golf GPS tracking systems, I have always stayed loyal to Hole19. That changes now. In the latest release they removed Apple Watch score keeping and decided that you needed a subscription for it. This was something that was keeping them within range of apps like 18Birdies. So now other apps still have Apple Watch scoring for free but Hole19 doesn’t. It is now part of their “premium lite” monthly subscription. If they had asked for one time fee $5 to unlock it I might have done it. But $3 a month to do what better apps give you for free? No! Loyalty goes both ways. Anthony Douglas, you have strayed from your original concept and desire to help golfers.Version: 5.34.6

Nice app, but pricey for a beginnerI’m a complete amateur at golf, but wanted a better way of tracking scores than paper cards. I tried this app for the first time today and after a bit of time working out how it worked, it became pretty easy to use. The biggest downside for me is the cost of the premium as I’d like to be able to use it with my watch. It’s great value if you play a few rounds a week, but I play once a month. Shame there’s not a cut down premium which activates the watch, but not the enhanced stats and features, which I’m sure would also be useful. Another downside is that when you start a round it defaults to 18 holes. My friends and I only play 9 holes at the moment. Not a problem if we play the front 9, but I couldn’t see a way to skip the front 9 holes if we only play the back 9. It should be nice if it was selectable in the start round area: 18 holes - front 9 - back 9. Final thing, there seems to be a bug. When you input anything into your bio, the app crashes. I don’t want to sound like I’m putting people off, as I did find the app very useful..Version: 5.21.0

Can’t add or save other playersWhat a dumb app…. Paid for pro even can’t save created players or look for already registered friends easily. Bad interface and or broken..Version: 5.44.0

Minimal Features Unless You SubscribeI’ve been using Hole 19 for 5 years now and have watched as the developers slowly switched almost all of the features to a subscription requirement. You can no longer use GPS to track your shot placement or even score for match play. Overall a great app with loads of features...only if you’re willing to play. For basic features there are better apps around. I’ll be switching away from Hole 19 as too many things are subscription only.Version: 5.34.6

Not so Brilliant Hole 19I have been an avid user for nearly ten years. Each time there is an update something goes backwards. Usually this is fixed very quickly. I used to contact support fairly regularly and used to be a beta tester (flight test) for a couple of years. I have been through the app facilities in detail and have been unable easily to find the means to request technical support. Has this been removed? My problem at the moment is that the operational response times reduce through a round of golf and it becomes onerous to enter data, shot data. Yesterday it was so bad I had to abandon my round, the time I was spending waiting fir the app to respond was affecting my playing partners. There have been some major updates over the last couple of years and this issue has been getting gradually worse. Come on Hole 19 (Vera), please give me back the means to discuss the problem so that it can be eliminated. Once done I’m sure the app will give me “best of breed” functionality again and I can can enjoy it again like I always used to. It is a brilliant app let down by the side effects of upgrades and the difficulty in getting support. I want to report five star performance again, just like I always used to..Version: 5.52.0

Never worked correctlyHad about a dozen games using this app and everyone has been fraught with problems. These have ranged from a complete failure to working occasionally. Don’t waste money. I will not be renewing my account. I’ve tried what I believe is every way to utilise this gps system with mixed results These range from complete failure to having to reset each hole as my game progresses. On one occasion it required a complete reset of my series 5 Apple Watch Which helped but didn’t allow me to complete my game without having to advance each hole manually. Even then it does not move the distances as you approach the green and requires attention each and every shot. On top of this it drains the battery rapidly. We are only playing 15 holes on my course due to adverse ground conditions. I’m getting to the point that it is a huge distraction and I recently played an improved game by not using it. Sorry to be so negative in my review but my experience with a dedicated gps watch was so much better and will be next purchase. I find it hard to believe others are not having the same experience. I’m fairly savvy in technical terms but this has been an unpleasant and frustrating experience..Version: 5.27.0

Can’t figure out how to use this with my Apple Watch.Good app tho.Version: 5.42.1

Not easy to useDidn’t find the app easy to use at all. Isn’t intuitive enough to just pick up and play with it. Golf Canada app is much easier to use, and also free..Version: 5.42.3

Shot tracking on watch freezesPhone App works great but the watch update for tracking shots so you can leave your phone in your bag constantly freezes with it to 60 yards regardless of distance, rest does nothing and you spend half the round turning on/off the watch app to get things working again.Version: 5.42.2

Too many paywallsI feel like most of the useful functionality is pro only. It was somewhat helpful with getting yardage but I don’t bring my phone with me and I would need more functionality on the Apple Watch to be unlocked for free. Ads were not too bad but not letting you log your individual strokes is a bit horrible in my opinion. It would be really nice to log my strokes from the Apple Watch as I play so that I can see the gps locations of each stroke on a map… but I don’t play golf enough to pay… sorry. If it was able to log strokes with gps on a map I would use the app more, share the app more, and view more ads while doing so. They should be figuring out how to get people to engage the app when they are not playing golf, that’s how you get more ad revenue..Version: 5.41.7

DisappointedI purchased an Apple Watch largely because the hole 19 app was available for it. I downloaded the free app and it worked pretty good for a while. Then I started having problems just occasionally. Hole 19 kept sending me messages trying to sell me the premium version. When they sent a discounted offer for the premium I thought maybe that would help with the problems, and I liked some of the additional features they said it would include. So, I bought the premium hole 19 and it has been a nightmare ever since. I download the course before leaving my house. Then, I start the app on the first hole. By the end of the first hole it asks me if I want to save “the round”. Sometimes I can get it to work again but then if I do get it to work again, the same thing happens again and sometimes I can’t get it to work again. I have not had it work for a complete round for a long time, and fiddling around with it trying to make it work during the round had caused some bad rounds because of the distraction and frustration it has caused. Then, I have do the embarrassing thing of asking my golf buddies my distance for each shot. I have tried to get in touch with the hole 19 customer service without success. I’m not sure they even have a customer service department or anyone there that can or will give me help. What a disappointment hole 19 app has caused me along with much frustration and embarrassment. What a waste of money, and enjoyment of golf..Version: 5.32.0

Weird workout issuesSince I upgraded to a series 6 watch, running this app triggers a lot more than normal exercise to be recorded. Probably about 4-5 times normal. I have not given the app any permissions to write health data. The app is great and works well for distances but this is very annoying..Version: 5.34.6

Distance accurate; Watch battery drainedI thought I’d try this so I could use my watch for distance rather than phone. Option to use the phone for gps to save battery which seems a good idea. However with a fully charged phone and watch (se) after six holes my watch stated it was low on battery and needs to go into power saver mode. Very disappointed. Rest of the round I used the phone which was accurate and clear. Shame that considering it’s meant to use the phone for gps the watch can’t complete a round using this..Version: 5.37.0

Free app is great, needs to improve watch premiumThis app definitely has more/better free features than GolfShot but the premium version leaves much to be desired. They market that Shot Tracking works on Apple Watch but after starting & stopping, there is no way to save it. You can continue from where you stopped (unpause & continue adding distance to same shot), reset (sets to 0), or cancel (which won’t save). So if you want to shot track, you have to keep pulling out your phone. No response from support on my email & generically received a “our support is busy” response, so don’t hold your breath getting a response from their support. If you just plan to use the free version, it’s great. Do not recommend paying for the service as it stands though..Version: 5.35.7

Good but missing some features. This app is relatively easy to use and good for beginner or social golfers, but it lacks a few easy to implement features that would make it so much user friendly these include: - Being able to “pick up” rather than finish a hole. This would make the users stats more accurate than having to create fake shots. For example when playing Stableford games and no longer able to score any points. - Being able to do a two shot penalty. Social rules allow an OB shot to be dropped on the fairway instead or returning to place of the original shot. - Being able to amend club names, for where overlap exists eg chipper, having a strong lofted clubs. - Being able to edit the club used on previous saved shots without having to delete those you’ve hit subsequently. If there is an app that offers these features, I’d suggest using those to save yourself some time..Version: 5.41.1

Good not greatTo be clear, this rating reflects the app and it’s functionality. It’s a shame that you can’t use the shot by shot feature from your watch. Don’t see how hard it would be add a prompt to select your club used, lie, etc., as you stand over your ball each shot—aka mimic scoring pop up screen, works beautifully! I’m a minimalist and never going to take my phone out to do this. It’s annoying when you can do all the scoring from the watch for free, but pay for premium and it’s essentially the same functionality. I don’t want to lug my iPhone around in my pocket and not be able to separate from phone/outside world just because I want to get a little advanced analytics..Version: 5.31.1

Poor visualI no longer use hole19 as you can only get a hd hole layout if you subscribe to the premium. Made the permanent switch to a competitor and as I prefer hole19 the other app provides a clear picture of the hole and is accurate but does not compare when it comes to Apple Watch. Oh well, deleting hole19..Version: 5.53.0

Love and hate this appThe GPS works well but scoring is terrible, if you want to add your scores in later forget about it. The scorecard whilst you’re playing is so small it pointless, the support is terrible because if you want to ask support you have to navigate through a website that’s not responsive! Come on guys, a mobile app that doesn’t serve support on a mobile?? Make it easy to do the basics, so many other features a but it falls short on making it easy to score, review and get the answer easy somehow..Version: 5.39.0

Removed featuresApple Watch no longer available.Version: 5.48.0

Pretty hopelessThis app is primarily trying to sell you a monthly subscription- that's its main aim, not giving you golf info. It's way to hard to use..Version: 5.2.4

UnreliableDespite excellent features and a great interface, the app is far too unreliable for what it is designed for. Each and every update seems to introduce more elaborate ways to try and convince you to upgrade to pro. But with the latest update, I used it during a round for my own score and it repeatedly ‘forgot’ hole scores I had entered. Twice I had to go back to the holes and re-enter the score. Even after saving the round, certain holes went blank and I had to ‘review’ to correct it. Hole 19 needs to focus on reliability first. This is not the first bug I’ve experienced. I will not trust the app to keep other peoples’ scores, and continue to fill out a paper scorecard just in case..Version: 5.18.0

Difficult to useI could not record my score after the hole was completed. It didn’t even give me an option. By the 3rd hole I had to use another app. I have read the how to use but it looks different then what options I was given during the game. When I hit the arrow on the bottom right hand side it just took me to the next hole… I’m confused, have I done something wrong? Eg: clicked the wrong type of game? Shot by shot?.Version: 5.36.1

Only OKI do like this app more than its competitors for allowing you to add friends to your round easily. I understand they need to make money but as scoring on the Apple Watch is a free feature for their rivals I’m surprised this is part of the paid package for Hole 19. Above all the most annoying thing is the emails, they bombard you with endless spam emails, multiple emails a day, and when you unsubscribe they unsubscribe you from one very specific list, and continue to bombard you with emails regardless..Version: 5.35.9

Use to be awesomeThis app use to be incredibly accurate. It was dead in with laser range finders to center of the green. After the last update it has been consistently 10-20yards off on both an iPhoneX and iPhone6. The watch app is almost completely broken now as well and it does not use the GPS on the watch as far as I can tell. The layout is broken but useable on the iPhoneX now. Hopefully these will get fixed soon! Also use the GPS on the watch! It makes way more sense. As soon as these are resolved I’ll change my review to 5 stars once again. Also as a money grab you may want to offer a set deal to just get high res screens one time fee. I’d pay $50 for high res but I don’t really need to track my play to justify a subscription..Version: 5.5.1

Great app...butI had & still hold great hopes for this app but there's 1 thing I just can't overlook. That is, despite rebooting both my Apple watch & iPhone (multiple times) the wake up function isn't working properly. That is the Watch app shuts down between shots so instead of raising my wrist to see the next distance I have to relaunch the watch app. Saying to press the side button, go-to the apps screen and press the Hole 19 app may not sound much but if you're doing it constantly you concentrate more on the app than your golf round. Beyond frustrating. The App support team are involved and appear responsive... Time will tell if they can resolve it. I won't buy the app with this bug and will go back to my old golf specific watch. Settings are as per recommendations... If this isn't common try the app a few times first. Otherwise I love how the app works and integrates with the Apple Watch..Version: 5.20.1

Biggest scamDon’t sign up, you can never cancel it.Version: 5.49.0

Lots going on, no idea what thoughI really didn’t enjoy this app. I felt like it should be able to do what I want (track game, give metrics) but the interface was annoying. You need more tutorials. More documentation. The foundation is there but there should be multiple “getting started” and basic use tutorials on YouTube. The foundations of this app are good I think - but none of that matters if a user has no idea what they’re doing - meanwhile their golf group is waiting as they smash away at this app..Version: 5.49.0

Apple watch support droppedNo longer works with Apple Watch 6. Switched to 18birdies..Version: 5.48.1

Courses not updatedReally like this app except that my home course changed to 4 gender neutral tee sets about 3 years ago and this has still not been updated. The Stroke Index are also all wrong as a consequence. Makes me wonder how accurate any other data is.Version: 5.52.0

Missing one essential featureThis is app is by far my favourite of the golf apps - good looking and easy to use. It is let down by when using it in connection with a series 3 Apple Watch it still uses the phones GPS and not the watch’s GPS. I leave my phone in my golf bag, and the need for it to use the watch’s GPS is essential. On my local golf course, I often have a walk to the hole and leave my bag near the tee for the next hole. This means it’s not giving me the actual distance from the hole (instead how far my bag is from the hole). It would be great if Hole19 had a watch only feature that allowed me to start a synced course, play using my watch’s GPS and end a match without having to use my phone. Many running apps have achieved this, it would be great to see Hole19 have this feature too! Until then I’m still on the search for an app with this feature..Version: 5.13.0

Constant ads and upgrade requestsUsed to live this app … but I am now so bombarded with ads AND wanting me to upgrade it is difficult to actually use. I am deleting and trying another free ad free golf course app!.Version: 5.49.0

DisappointedI have been using this app for years(on free version) as I am able to play golf three of four times a year (wish I could do more). I found very good and used with Apple Watch for distance and scoring was great that only had to start the app on phone then leave it in pocket until end. But come to use it and found that this is now a In App Purchase. Thought OK (not happy) but developers have to make money even if they moving stuff to IAP. Then found when trying to do score on the phone EVERY time had to dismiss a pop up about scoring on watch with IAP. Very annoying (with ads between) holes as well! Now having to open the app the battery drain on the phone actually to that nearly run out and had to abandoned using the app after 12 hole. I always recommend this app to people who played golf before but now will definitely NOT now. As I only be able to play a few times a year it not worth to paying the IAP. Maybe can do a one off (Green Fee) IAP that release all the features for a day because I would do that (see app Slopes: Ski & Snowboard as they do a “Single Pass” etc).Version: 5.39.10

Scam ArtistsWas a wonderful application who then decided to remove key features and put them in a “premium lite” plan effectively baiting you into the app and switching it out to make a buck. Don’t support shady developers that do this..Version: 5.27.0

Paywall introductionI used a GPS golf watch for years as there wasn’t anything available for my Apple Watch. Since using Hole 19, I’ve not gone back to it! Easy to use and accurate yardages which are within a couple of yards of my playing partners GPS watch. Perfect for Covid-19 golf too, as scorecards are not being issued by our club for general play, so I score on the watch and download the resulting scorecard. Shame that free features will now be charged from 2021 so will be deleting. Perhaps more of a tiered system would be more attractive rather than one charge for everything. Most of the features in the premium option are of no interest to me. I just want to know how far it is to the hole and to enter my score via my watch..Version: 5.34.3

Won’t work 9 times out of 10 on Apple WatchThis app rarely syncs up to the Apple Watch Series 2 or 4. Most of the time it says to start a round on the phone even after it IS started on the phone making it useless on the watch. On the rare occasion the watch does sync and the app actually works, once you have completed a hole and input your score, the “next hole” button will not work until you have hit in 5-10 times. Nearly each time this results in jumping forward 4-5 holes and having to ope the phone back up to select next hole. I wanted to like this app and use it without carrying my iPhone XS Max in my pocket. There are way too many issues with it and it will just frustrate you more than it will ever help with yardage. Don’t waste you time or money..Version: 5.18.2

Crashes and need to manually change holesAccurate for distance once my course was updated. Sometimes crashes on the first hole, need to move to second then back to first to stop this. Also a pain that holes don’t automatically advance especially when starting on 10 and then you have to scroll all the way back to 1 halfway through round. Surely with gps in watch it should sense which hole you are closest to? Would love this fixed!.Version: 5.18.3

Poor Apple Watch interface...requires turning off iPhone Bluetooth to get distances from the watchHole 19 App has great features but needs one final very improvement to perfect with use with Apple Watch. The app should have the option to permanently set the GPS distances to be determined from the Apple Watch versus the iPhone. Seems like a no brainer as unless you carry you phone in your pocket the gps distance is not where your hitting from and thus are well off the real distance. To make app use Apple Watch GPS you need to turn off Bluetooth which causes you to lose any access to iPhone Bluetooth uses (speaker, headphones etc.). Also, you need to remember to turn it all back on. I’ve gone back to my Garmin golf watch and cancelled my subscription until this is fixed. Developers, please add this option if you can. Thanks!!.Version: 5.19.0

Used to workI played 18 rounds using the App, then suddenly it stopped working. It freezes, and gets stuck won't advance to the next hole and then says I haven't finished a round. I delete the round I just started and it gets stuck again. Disappointed! Ok, I'm trying it again and so far it seems more stable. One thing that I think should change is this: I play a lot of 9 hole courses, but play them twice for 18 holes. The app only shows them as 9 holes. I have to put in each round of 9 separately. It would be nice if you had a choice of 9 or 18 on the 9 hole courses. I just got an Apple Series 4 watch and the app does not function on this model. It worked in the Series 3..Version: 5.25.0

Needs workA few aspects of this app are good. It syncs perfectly with the Apple Watch, better than 18 Birdies does. It calculates Match Play scores easily BUT you have to manually enter your opponent’s score because even if you are both using the app, it doesn’t sync the two players the way 18 Birdies does. That’s terrible. It’s also a pain to find and select the course you are playing. Although I have saved several courses, they never show up and the GPS of the app doesn’t quickly find the course you are on. Also better on 18 Birdies which does this instantly. There is no option to contact support, something 18 Birdies is great at. So between the two apps, that one wins..Version: 5.48.1

Decent but Lacks Map DetailI used the app the first time today and decided to try their 14 day free trial premium subscription. There’s a lot of great features in the premium edition, but I was disappointed in the map detail of the app. It was under my understanding that the maps are more detailed in the premium edition. The maps looked fuzzy and that was my only downside. I’ll continue using the app to get a better user experience. Hole 19 works great with smart phones like the Apple Watch. Better than 18 Birdies. The app loads right up on my Apple Watch as soon as I start around. That was the biggest highlight for me. I’ll update my rating if I find it more enjoyable than the three stars I’ve submitted..Version: 5.42.4

DisappointedThe app itself as nice features, I paid for Premium and end up canceling because the layout of every golf course I played was blurry on the screen. The first time I use it I was in Mexico, I thought it was the reason but it did the same thing back in Canada. Really frustrating to pay for something that doesn’t work properly. Don’t buy.Version: 5.42.1
