✓ Fantastic!I got this for my 4 year old and 7 year old to play. We were already familiar with Usborne books and enjoyed the educational quality and entertaining style. My 7 year old was already reading close to 2nd grade level so he breezed through the games. He still enjoyed playing even though it wasn't a challenge. My 4 year old had just begun reading CVC words and sounding out letters. Within a couple of weeks her reading had improved dramatically. She ended up completing the first level quickly but wasn't quite ready for the second so started playing on "my" account for extra practice. She has now completed level 2 on both her and my account and is doing well on level 3. (This is after having the app a few months and very sporadic and limited screen time.) It would be nice if there were American pronunciations of a few words but with just the UK pronunciations it gives us a chance to talk about other cultures and regions so that's a different kind of benefit..Version: 3.1
✓ Love it!I used this in my kinder classroom for two years. I have moved onto a different grade, but should I ever go back to kindergarten I will use this app again. I still recommend it to friends with kinder-age kiddos! The games are fun, I could see the data, and it was an asset for my kids to learn sounds. The British accent did make some sounds a bit harder to hear/understand, but as it was used as one of many tools it didn’t affect the students. Love that they could do sight words too! ✓ Excellent app that gives many hours of learningThis is definitely a 5 star app. It starts off quite slow but I’d encourage people to stick with it. We have nearly finished all the levels now and the developers have done a great job of keeping things new and interesting but without changing things so quickly as to lose children who, I’m learning, enjoy routines and can play similar games many times without becoming bored. My daughter is in Reception class and I would recommend this to any parent of a child of that age. Thank you; I tried a few apps for learning and practicing phonics but this is the my daughter goes to first..Version: 3.2

✓ So worth it!This is a wonderful game for my 4 year old. It plays just like any journey style game (Mario-esque) and makes the objectives learning based. For example: all the ducks have escaped! Herd them back to the pond that makes the “Sh” sound. So your child would easily make their monster gather the ducks and put them in the right pond. It’s much easier on a phone or tablet than the computer for us. Using a mouse is still a learning process but it can be great if your child is good with one. ✓ Fantastic phonics gameMy daughter loves to play this game. Its easy to navigate for her without any help and the instructions are very easy for her to follow. She has to match same sound phonemes and then match them to words etc. With each completion she gets on to another challenge with different worlds and random games in between like telling time, etc. Lucky I got it free but it’s worth the charge as well..Version: 3.6
✓ Great app for first readers especiallyMy 3.5 year old began playing this before he was 3 and he loves it. He enjoys the funny voices and new monsters. He’s actually gone through it quite quickly so we’ve made new monsters to start again before it gets beyond his capabilities. He’s currently learning tricky words and starting to read some words too. I do find he needs more help with the second and third levels but it’s great how there’s new games and activity so it doesn’t get old. Only thing that would make it better is maybe a help or little hint button when they’re struggling. Especially when reading the full sentences. They get there in the end but a little hint would help sometimes so he can do it more independently. I’m so impressed I’ve recommended it to loads of people! ✓ This is a fantastic resource.... and my daughter is really loving this now she is 5. I might be a bit of a wally but we actually both found the gameplay a bit frustrating when she was younger and didn’t look at it from age 3 to now. The platform game can be really tough to get the hang of, and also rounding up the animals can be a bit frustrating. I wonder if you could have some tips in the game if people are struggling, like “get behind the animals” or “tap where you want to jump to”. I’m still not sure we’ve got it right! I also agree with the other user who said it would be great to have some sort of timed usage or stop point, it would really aid in managing use in a homeschool situation. Not sure how you do this without ripping kids out mid-game. I usually let her finish the “planet” she’s on at the moment... Another small piece of feedback... when you get to the later games, it says (eg) “you already know “ch” looks like xxx, it also looks like xxxx” - it should say “sounds like” if it’s where a particular letter or set of letters can make more than one sound.Version: 4.0.5
✓ Best app for phonics and readingMy daughter who is 5 have learn to read with this app. She is now on level 3. She doesn’t even know she is learning to read she thinks it’s a game. ✓ Amazingly goodMy daughter loves this. Its incredible how well this teaches phonetic (and sight) reading. It definitely requires parental guidance though; do not send kids off to play this by themselves. This program builds up new skills and sight words FAST, often using sight words that the student hasn’t seen as the answer (it’s a good thing; students figure them out by process of elimination and are never shown two new words at once and are required to recall or sound out multiple previously seen words ). By comparison, ABCmouse seems galacially paced. Most kids will do better if an adult is there to help them walk through the words when they forget a skill or get confused..Version: 3.5
✓ Homeschool Mom Thrilled with App, but...We have been using this app for a couple of weeks and we love it. My daughter struggles with reading, and her progress with TYMtR has been incredible. She enjoys all the games and is motivated to play. My only complaint is that the “Stat” feature is not working for her profile. On my account I made two student profiles one called “Mom” so I could test the app out to see if it was worth letting my daughter try it, and one in my daughter’s name. I have no problems accessing the Stats for the “Mom” profile, but for about a week, I have not been able to access my daughter’s stats. I would like to be able to use those stats to help her work on problem areas and to determine if she is progressing too fast through the levels. I emailed tech support, but was told that it may be a server issue with the influx of users and to try at different times of day, but no matter the day or time, the Stats are not available for my daughter’s profile but work fine on the other profile. ✓ Child wanted to play extra timeJust downloaded yesterday but my first grader loved it right away. One glitch for my ESL girl was figuring out how to get the “magnet machine tool”...do not know what it should be called ...to lift the blank sound blocks as visible clues are what she looks for first. Because she has had trouble hearing and recognizing initial letter sounds, the lack of a visual clue made her listen more closely which was good. After frustration about figuring out what action was needed, she happily went on to make progress. She was so excited, she wanted to use the app again today on her lunch break. Today her almost 5 year and sister whined for me to put it in my phone so she could do it also. If early excitement and learning continues, I will be happy. A couple of other apos that I have tried the younger sister on before have yielded a “no, I don’t want that!” response. So it clearly got both over the app avoidance test!.Version: 4.1

His teacher got her class signed up for this and it has been great for him to do independently while we watch his brother’s swim lesson. ✓ Honestly not that badI’m going to be perfectly honest here, this game has fun mini games and no bugs at all from my experience, but the one issue I have with it is that it doesn’t really help children once they learn to read. Once they can read, it just becomes kind of useless for the child. In my experience, it was a fun game overall that did what it was supposed to do quite well! The only concern is the login is a three step process. Which I often have to remember the 3 part of the password. That is the only part that makes it not as user friendly. ✓ British Accent usedMy son loves the app and has fun as its competitive and very much like any other game app where their player is on a path that needs to jump and make it to the end. The catch is that if they want to correctly finish, they must match the sound to the letter(s). The problem comes about when you’re needing to teach your child according to what they normally hear. Americans say arr for R but the game has an accent and says “ah” which also sounds like “au” or even the soft “a”. Furthermore, for iPad mini 3, the app doesn’t work well with the speakers. You can hardly hear the instructions by the narrator but you’ll hear a strong voice saying the letters needing matched. Many times they’ll be on top of each other and children can’t understand. If you’re in America or Canada, this app may not be the best..Version: 4.1
✓ Letter soundsMy four year old son loves this app and before using it he didn't know many letter sounds. After just a couple times of use he is already reading simple words! My only complaint is when you are racing down the track and jumping to touch the flowers to make the letter sounds, it's very difficult to time getting to the top ramp. ✓ 5 year old loves itMy 5 year old loves designing her monster. Actually, she’s obsessed! She’s a bit addicted to playing so she can gather more stars to dress her monster up. She plays the game as if she’s secretly gotten away with doing something. I feel like in the 2 days she’s played, she’s learned lore about phonics and letter recognition than a whole year of being in school. I absolutely recommend this game for preschoolers and kindergarteners. Side note, for those in the US, as other reviews have mentioned, some, maybe just a few, of the phonics are different sounding. When she comes across those, I let her know how different countries/places pronounce things differently and I try to help her find the correct letter and move on. ✓ AmazingI absolutely love this app for my 4 year old and as an Early Years Assistant Head Teacher, I highly recommend this app!! It’s great for learning new sounds in an interactive way. I love that is involves simple sounds, words, common exception words and sentences! My two little recommendations would be; 1. Common exception words (especially at the beginning) often start with a capital letter which makes it harder for my child to pick up as he then has to sound it out, rather than sight reading. 2. A little something... it is in the letters and sounds order. It would be great (for my reception classes) if there was an option to either play in letters and sounds or RWI. Other than that.... One downside is that, for us, the narration has an accent so some of the phonemes do not sound proper, which is annoying given that its an app that teaches phonetic awareness/reading. At first it was a great way for her to practice and remember the new sounds she’s learned but now she just loves ‘playing the game’ oblivious to the fact she is actually learning and progressing each time. We have this app on the phone and kindle. Only downfall is she’s further ahead on her kindle than she is on my phone, would be good to sync them both! ✓ Brilliant!I downloaded this app 2 years ago for my 4 year old daughter who was in reception (kindergarten) at the time and struggling to learn to read. She loved the app and played it several times a day and in no time everything fell into place. She is in year two now and reads like a pro. The app has grown with her and it’s still one of her favourites and when she’s allowed screen time she’s just as likely to choose this as Netflix! ✓ ExcellentThis has hands down been one of our best apps. My son is 4 and on the 3rd level/game. There are a few items I think could be tweaked....the running game....my son was too young to time jumps when it came along. You can just wait and eventually you will win. >< There are constant updates and added content. The only thing I would like to see added is writing. A moveable alphabet to practice and writing with a stylus or finger. One comment on level 3, I notice my kid guessing a lot. He knows what parts he can “cheat”. He’s a little too smart. If you let kids progress when guessing the point won’t hit home. I know practice exists but I would love if he could see his scores on phonemes and go back to practice. I read a review that said it had incorrect phonics. Well, you learn the letter sounds, and sort stuff depending upon the sound. Not incorrect phonics. ✓ Brilliantly structuredIt systematically builds up your knowledge from abc to reading. Collecting the little tricky words is a great idea. My kids have become competitive in collecting them. ✓ Son made amazing strides in a short timeMy son started playing this game the summer before he began kindergarten, about 15-20 minutes a day. At that time he could identify all of his letters but had no practice with sounding out words. I am AMAZED how fast this game helped him learn to read. At his first parent-teacher conference, his teacher estimated he was reading at a 2nd or 3rd grade level, after only a few months of playing the game. It has really helped my daughter progress quickly with her reading. Loves: -My kids want to play it ALL the time. -It had 3 levels so it adapts to each kids’ ability. -It is fun, interactive, and very educational. -My autistic (almost)4yr old is an early reader but late speaker, his pronunciation is getting better after just a few days. -My 6yr old is now recognizing more blended letters when reading his homework. He was already one of the top readers in his class, he is now blowing me away by home much he is picking up in just a few days of playing. Cons: -The British accent is sometimes hard for my American kids to understand what they are being asked to do. -The volume is not quite right. The main narrator and the music/sound effects are really loud if you want to actually hear the “word speakers”. Example: I the narrator says “to save the bear find the word”, and then someone else says “turn”. The person saying “turn” is so quiet that we have the tablet volume almost all the way up. Then it’s way too loud when the narrator speaks again. -There are a few instances, in different games, where I wish you could touch letters and they would make the phonetic sound again for kids who have a hard time remembering their task. I have played a lot of different games over my past years of living (My job is living so I do it quite a bit). The clothing outfits are fascinating. I love how you can dress up as whatever you want! The progression behind the game is great as well. The more activities you complete, the faster you can build your spaceship to get home. The plot is a little shaky though. You crash land on this planet and your ship explodes, yet you come out with no injuries what so ever. I think if the game showed a little blood and showed the children how to bandage and clean a wound, that would be a great survival skill to learn. You never know when your spaceship will crash land and you’ll be stuck on a planet with kings that have you learn letters to rebuild your ship. I have noticed her using the sounds she learns during the game, later during story time and lessons. One concern was the limited practice for each sound but the new added practice material is fantastic. I love the ability to pick any 1-6 sounds she needs to work on. I only have 2 issues: 1. is the level of background noise compared to the sound of the letters. Some are difficult to hear. And turns it into a guessing game. And 2. ✓ Great app, needs a few tweaksMy 4 year old loves this app! She has learned a lot of letters and sounds and especially loves customizing the monster. A few issues I have had with the app: - The sounds all have English accents, which generally isn’t a problem but is really confusing on “o” and “r”. - The games have no tutorial, so the fast games start, give a quick instruction, and take off without giving the child time to figure it out. My daughter still hasn’t figured out the flower or balloon games because they’re just too fast and have very little explanation. - My main issue is that in the main game, there’s no way to “pause” and pick up later. On an island, if you close the app, it skips ahead to the next letter and there’s no way to go back. I wish there was the option to continue or stop between each island. We do an island every day and when we stop it skips ahead to the first letter of the next one when we reload the next day, so she misses the beginning and first letter sound of the next island, which is frustrating. Of course I have sold my bill of goods regarding gendered clothing; however, there are NO clothes that are typically gendered female. ✓ Great concept, but no pausesIt’s always a good idea to turn learning into a game and that has been done very well here. My daughter has been actually learning with this app and having loads of fun at the same time. My only criticism is that it is very difficult to stop. My daughter is only 2 so short lessons are great but the longer you go on, it all starts to get a bit overwhelming. She doesn’t want to stop because she likes it, but it just links from one round straight into the next with no natural pause point at all, so I have to be the one cutting it off every time which is a shame. It would be good if there was a ‘would you like to continue now or later’ option at some point. Update: the 10 min practice and mini games are great options, although they don’t allow progress in the main game/story. ✓ Effective and fun!When my 4 year old daughter began using this game she loved it and didn't want to put it down. When she started she knew all the letters of her alphabet and many sounds. Within the first two months she was reading simple words (CVC). By the fourth month she was reading simple sentences. By 9 months she had completed finished all three levels of the game and could read proficiently at a 2nd grade level (about 550 lexile). I combined this game with Usborne Books & More's Very First Reading Set, which progresses using the same sounds/words as each part of the game. The only downsides of this game are: as an American some of our pronunciations are different than how they are taught in the game (just a few words, but I enjoy hearing the accents of the narrator and characters), and single sounds/parts of the game cannot be focused on for further practice; the entire level has to be repeated. With my daughter I made up flash cards to practice her sounds and tricky words, but being able to select a letter/letter combination/word to repeat would be a nice feature. Overall, though, I give this game 5 stars for being FUN and very EFFECTIVE. I recommend this to everybody!.Version: 3.1

✓ FlawlessCan’t praise this app enough. Our son’s school recommended it during lockdown and straight away I could see why. I would recommend sitting with them while they use it. That way you’ll be able to check that they’re not progressing too far too fast. But it ignited a love of reading that our son has had ever since. He’s very proud of being a “Champion Reader” and we had to print the certificate off and stick it on his bedroom wall. Our daughter is starting on it now and loving it just as much. ✓ Absolutely worth it.This is PERFECT for my kindergartener! She’s been having difficulty in school with certain sounds/letters and this has helped tremendously and it’s only been a week. It’s fun, colorful, interactive. She makes the sounds when told and it holds her (very spacey and hyper) attention. I don’t know if it’s because she isn’t allowed tablets/phones but she hasn’t moved or gotten distracted in over an hour, I’d like to credit that to the app. I plan on recommending this to everyone, I wish I could give more than 5 stars..Version: 3.9

✓ A good game but needs some tweakingFirstly, can I say a big thank you for your dedication in helping children to read. It’s such an important skill for children and adults. I love that it’s a charity and not just a money making scheme and the thought you have put into this is amazing. I have some feedback which I hop you will take on board. 1. The duck pond game and the flower game are too difficult for little fingers to do easily and cause frustration. My daughter knows which pond the ducks need to go in and which path the flower tells her to go down but getting the ducks to got into the pond and the monster to take the right path causes a meltdown. 2. Can you put a limit on how many times you can dress your alien after each game is completed. My daughter can spend a good 10 minutes swapping and changing the clothes after each game that she gets more excited about doing that than doing the games to learn the words/letters. Maybe allow 1 dress change per after game and then automatically move them out of the closet? 3. I can’t access the Letter, certificate or book from the Alien. I log into the game from the website and it accepts the password but just gives me a completely black screen. I’ve sent a message on twitter but haven’t had a reply yet. ✓ Great educational gameAmazing! My son (5) was playing it since I downloaded it and already learned more then in 2 months at school. He wouldn’t play reading eggs but he loves Teach Monster. ✓ Amazing!I’ve been using this app with my 3 year old, partly for his speech, but to also give him a head start on reading. He’s blasting his way through the app and loves showing everyone how far he’s got and inviting them to play with him. He’s able to recognise letters and match them with the sound and vice versa, and carries this through to every day life when he’s beginning to try to read words he sees. One criticism is that it’s too easy to add additional players to the game, meaning that he has made the maximum amount of players, which leads to him playing the same sounds over and over instead of working consecutively through the game if i’m not guiding him to the main one that is the furthest on. Adding the need for an adult to oversee new players being added would cut down on this. All in all, a brilliant app that has helped with speech difficulty, helped concentration and coordination and makes learning extremely fun for a bright 3 year old..Version: 3.6

✓ Brilliant! My kids love it!I’ve tried so many learning programs and apps to help my Autistic son, he’s high functioning and clever but really struggled to concentrate during the phonics lessons, any English, reading and writing classes at school, it had a huge impact on his reading abilities, which has a knock on affect with everything else. He hates writing and anything that looks like school work. I quickly worked out he would quite happily learn with a fun computer program or a fun app on his iPad, however a lot we’ve tried are quite basic or boring. I am so glad I found Teach my Monster, not only is it fun but very good at teaching sounds to my child, who just thinks he’s playing a game, he’s really motivated to get on to the next level. ✓ My daughter loves this!My daughter loves this game so much and it’s really helping her reading: it’s great seeing her apply what she learnt to reading other things and trying to spell words. My only tiny criticism is that the sounds “or” and “ure” are pronounced really similarly in the game so for example it’s hard to know if you’re trying to make the word “core” or “cure” Otherwise it’s great!.Version: 4.1

Was connected by school over the pandemic but had to pay £2.99? Was worth it though by far. ✓ 6-yr-old loves itMy granddaughter figured out how the game works faster than I did! She really loved it, and I saw a lot of progress both in beginning reading and in reading 3-digit numbers. She had come to believe, in school, because the curriculum marched on regardless of whether all the kids were getting it, that she couldn’t read. She just didn’t want to try. But playing the game she did pretty well. Not being on paper was part of it I think. Her eyeballs still seem to just bounce off paper text. The sentences in the game get progressively longer, while the words are still about the same. As the sentences lengthened, the time she spent with it shortened. It would be nice to be able to choose levels, with variety, so that the learner could have some say in the challenge. The game definitely has resulted in important progress..Version: 3.9

✓ The best reading programWe tried so many different games, apps, interactive books etc etc to teach our kids to read. I knew it would eventually just click but it was taking awhile for my son. Teach my monster was finally what made it click for both of my kids. My son is 2 years older so he had tried everything under the son by the time we tried this app. My daughter didn’t have as much exposure to reading but they were both at the same level after teach your monster. It works! And it’s fun! They didn’t fight me when I said it was time to play which is the first hurdle. Highly recommend!!.Version: 4.1
✓ Great AppI found starting an account to be a challenge. But once I got passed that part it was amazing. 3 kids using it at once, some on PCs and some on iPads. They all enjoyed the game - I am so happy to have help teaching the kids how to read..Version: 4.1
✓ Fabulous !!!We absolutely love this app, my two and a half year old granddaughter loves to spend twenty minutes playing the games and earning the stars. I know she’s learning, she just loves playing the games 👍🏼 As for the ducks on the pond game, after three attempts she figured it out so perhaps people either need to sit and help their little ones and show them what to do or give them time to figure it out - either way it’s not a tricky game. Looking at the progression of the games, I think this app will be a firm favourite for years to come 😀 Thank you for a quality and fun app. 😘.Version: 3.5
