Excessive Cellular Data ConsumptionBEWARE!! Based on reviews I’ve read on various websites and YT videos, I decided to give ExpressVPN a shot. Initially all seemed great, good speed, reliable connection etc. A couple of weeks in to my subscription I received an text alert from my mobile provider that my recently refresh data allowance was almost used up. This was unusual and unexpected since most of the time my iPhone is mostly connected to WiFi and I my monthly mobile data usage is very low. Sure enough when I checked the mobile data usage in iPhone settings it showed the Express VPN app had used 3.5GB of data of my 4GB monthly allowance in a week. I contacted their support, but to cut a long story short, they advised to turn mobile data off every time I connect to WiFi!! Their app does not prioritise to use the available WiFi connection and continues to eat up mobile data. Not sure how the app on it’s own can use so much data. Luckily they have a 30 day money back guarantee which I will be taking advantage of. I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max on the latest version of iOS.Version: 10.0.8

Overpriced and not so responsiveI’ve been a user for the past 2+years and most of the time the connection has been satisfactory (sometimes very slow). However for the past 6 months the connection has deteriorated. Sometimes the vpn is down for days and even weeks before the service is restored. I was forced to switch to other vpn and guess what, some of them are much better and charges much less... I’m literally paying 1/3 of the price and getting much better/faster connection...All I can make out of this is that I think the engineers have gotten lazy/non-responsive because of the established status of this branded app. Customer service have told me repetitively that they are “working hard around the clock to solve the issue” but nothing happens for days and weeks. I don’t understand why other vpns are working just fine while this one takes forever to solve. Maybe it’s because you guys aren’t “working hard enough”. So this is it for me, I will not renew my subscription after the current one and I encourage anyone using this to do the same..Version: 7.4.5

No internet available this stops essential apps!I trialled this app and it did exactly what it said it would do. However, with the pandemic and areas with no accessible wifi it meant that many of my essential payment and other apps failed to work. There should a way of temporarily disabling the need for internet access. Since there was no way to do this, I deleted the app. The next day I thought I would re-load it to make sure process worked. After 5 hours of my life and many different attempts to get me back into the app from the excellent support staff, I had absolutely no joy. As good as this app is with internet access, without it this app has crippled my iphone function. Deleted it again and cancelled my annual subscription due later this week. No use in ChinaI have had Express on and off for the 8 years I’ve been in China. There are periods of good connection, however recently, the problems with connections outweigh any good performance I might’ve had in the past. It’s strange, because after downloading other VPNs, I’ve found that there is no problem with their connection. So this is not a China problem, it is an Express VPN problem. I’ve connected with their online support they always promise that “they are aware of the problem and their engineers are working on the problem”. Well, get better engineers? It’s been two weeks now without a connection, and whilst offering me 2 weeks of free service is a nice gesture, it’s useless if I cannot actually connect. It’s unlikely I’ll be renewing my subscription, and instead I’ll continue with the subscription I’ve been forced to simultaneously take with an alternative provider..Version: 11.55.0

Then each day it takes longer and longer to connect and then no longer connects. Despite this the support team were apologetic and tried to help but no avail as the firewall in China is strong. Long term member - really bad in China nowI have been using ExpressVPN in China for many years now. Earlier on, it was great, no issues at all. Starting a couple of years ago, connection has become a problem - whenever there’s a “thing” in China (eg National Congress or Party Congress), it would be really difficult to connect to VPN, but generally only for a few days and less than week. Nowadays ExpressVPN is simply a joke in China. About one month ago, ExpressVPN simply became unusable - you can connect to VPN but the internet simply didn’t work (you cannot load anything). If you ask for help from the support people at ExpressVPN, they would acknowledge that things were difficult in China and they are working hard to find solutions but there’s nothing they could do to help in the meantime and then offer you a one-week free extension on you subscription. Why do I need to extend a subscription that simply doesn’t work?? If you can’t get things to work in China, you should really refund people’s subscription here and truthfully tell us to seek an alteration supplier instead!.Version: 11.68.0

Great VPN, hard to cancel subscriptionWorks perfectly until you decide to cancel the subscription. App itself will only lets you “cancel account” and when doing so, the apps advices you that if you do not cancel the subscription you are still going to be charged. Then, to cancel the subscription you have to go through an entire process of multiple difficult steps, having to go deep into “subscription settings” and after finding the “turn off autorenew” button, a 2nd confirmation button pops…. After clicking the “Yes, cancel subscription” the “auto renew” alert still shows as ON. I am guessing I will have to contact customer support to be able to cancel my subscription but as far as I am concerned, that option is not available neither in the app nor in the website. This is a nasty practice express VPN :( I was just canceling to use your service with another email but given this, I will have to look for another provider..Version: 11.100.0

Don’t Waste Your TimeEverything starts off fine, but after about a month the issues will start. At first I thought it was just my wife and operator error, but a month later I started to have more and more issues. Advert OverstatementI know all VPN’s have their issues but when I pay for a 12 month subscription I expect to get 12 months of service. Over the course of a year the VPN is down countless times and for days and sometimes a week at a time, this adds up to a month or so of considerable accumulated down time. Express VPN does nothing to compensate its customers. Their advert says customer support 24/7, get answers in seconds not days...this is not always the case because their support staff is not always 24/7 and their live chat option always asks me to leave them an email and they will get back to me. It’s great, until it’s not.I live in China, and for almost a decade Expressvpn has been my go to work-around for the Great Firewall of China. Sure, once or twice a year the government would crack down and it would be out of commission for a few days, but nothing unbearable. Until this year. For the last few months it seems like it doesn’t work more than it does and customer service, while deeply sympathetic, does nothing more than refer you back to their service page which regurgitates the same useless advice ending with “ bookmark this page and check back for latest updates”. There’s also no refund for the time it can’t be used beyond extending your subscription for a month at the most. As they’re currently into the 7th non-functioning week, it doesn’t feel like fair compensation. My advice if you need a vpn for China would be to go with one of the smaller, less well established vpns that seem not to attract the attention of government censors so consistently, several of the free ones have been working fine while Expressvpn struggles. A regrettable yearly subscription in ChinaI have been with express vpn for almoat four months and did have some happy days when the connection was fine. However, it is rarely reliable for the past 2 months. UnreliableI got ExpressVPN a few month ago and have had numerous issues. Both the PC and iOS app have had some major flaws such as data leaking when trying to switch servers, the PC app never saving any changed settings (so rarely automatically loaded when the PC did), no killswitch option when manually disconnecting the VPN on the iOS, and the killswitch option on the PC can only be turned on when you are not connected to the VPN meaning you are pretty much guaranteed to leak data just to turn on the option to stop that from happening ... Since the last iOS update the service has become practically unusable in low signal strength areas, when previously it was fine, then the app just sits their saying ‘reconnecting’ but doesn’t do anything till I manually DC it, and then reconnect. Also the amount of available servers compared to many other providers is poor, and very few work on things like Netflix (Oddly enough some work on the iOS version of Netflix, but not on the website).Version: 7.1.0

Does not work well in Mainland ChinaIt is guaranteed this app will not be able to connect for at least a week at a time, several times per year in China. Router is less reliable than Windows version, Windows version is less reliable than iOS version, but even iOS version cannot connect from a lot of wifi providers. It continues to get worse. You will find dozens of similar reviews saying this exact same thing. Often these reviews will have a note from the developer attached asking to contact Express VPN for help. It's dishonest. I think that comment is just meant to try to cover up what is becoming more and more obvious, this app is not reliable in Mainland China because it is blocked there, and there is nothing Express VPN can do about it. I wouldn't be so skeptical if they were honest about it, but they appear not to be. If you read reviews of a competitive VPN like NordVPN, those comments also say they have trouble in China due to censorship, and the developer is open about it..Version: 11.92.0

Frequent Service OutageI have been a customer of exp vpn for years. The biggest problem is whenever there is some national/political event going on in China, the server is ALWAYS DOWN. Sometimes they are able to get it back to work within a few days, sometimes it takes weeks. Over the past 11 months of this year, I have experienced cumulatively at least 30 days of service outage. Now is December 1st as I write, the service is still unavailable on all platforms, although they stated that they were already aware of the issue and were working on a fix, back on November 23rd. When you try to reach out to the support team they will ALWAYS tell you to do the following useless processes: reset, delete and re-download, etc. where the issue is apparently on the server side, not on the client side. Initially when I picked express vpn I was hoping that it could would work ALL THE TIME NO MATTER WHAT, and there shouldn’t be any excuses. Unfortunately, they have failed to do so and, sarcastically, even some free vpn apps are still working during the event. I pay for a full annual service but I am only able to use it less than 11 months. And of course they won’t refund me the money for the downtime as a reimbursement, neither will they offer a discount to their long-term customers. No longer a great Solution for ChinaUsing for about 3 years in China - even though a little expensive, it has been pretty reliable except for occasional ‘sensitive’ political events. This year however has seen a lot of disruption + times where I’ve been unable to connect (and less stable connections even when I do!). Terrible serviceI have been a long time customer of Nord VPN. I wanted to trial ExpressVPN with the 7 day free trial as my subscription with Nord is coming to an end, and I have only ever read positive things about ExpressVPN. Well my experience has been far from positive. When I attempted to sign up I received a message saying “I’ve already used a free trial”, which is incorrect as I have never used ExpressVPN before. I attempted to have the matter resolved with online chat where my case was sent to the billing team. After multiple emails back and forth they have told me that I have already used a free trial, when I ask when this was I get told they can’t disclose this to me. Who is the benefactor?Having lived and worked in China for eight years I found the services provided by Express VPN consistent and convenient, however since 2018 this has become progressively worse and last year I was unable to access their web site. On my return to UK this summer I renewed my annual subscription and ensured everything had been updated to the current version on the same day I returned to China only to discover that their web site is still unavailable and due to the severe internet restrictions imposed by China this year find that I’m unable to access any of my education sites, including the universities of both Oxford and Cambridge. I always assumed this was why a VPN was necessary. And despite all the claims made by Express VPN their service is non existent for all my teaching colleagues who have to rely on the internet for their teaching material so having paid a subscription for a full year it’s understandable that I am writing this complaint and ask who is the benefactor, certainly not many who are living in China..Version: 7.4.1

Yes but also NoJust to put things in short. It performs well when there isnt any external internet block. It runs butter smooth in the initial months, many location subjoint servers which is yes definitely thumbs up. However, one reason why I bought this is tjat reviews out there says it performs much better than other major components in countries like China, that this vpn deserves a higher price. Then, since 20th of July all the way to now, 8th August, all connection joints lost and the successful connections is just getting fewer every day. I understand there is extenal blockings out there but I believe its also part of the service duty. Status updates are up but it pretty much doesnt help at all and every new updates is pretty much only changing the date of post. Meanwhile days are still counting off on the subscription. Australian Servers Still Block GoogleUpdate Jan 2024. Below still an issue. On top, can’t use Australian servers as they randomly block Google and other sites. Excellent VPN But too expensive nowI have been using Express VPN for many years and it’s always reliable. But the significant increase in cost over that time means I cannot justify it. There seems to be a recent trend for over priced subscriptions across the board. Subscription models were introduced to provide a less expensive model and improve capex but it’s now cheaper to buy software than subscribe in many cases. The cash grab is getting to that point in the curve where It’s cannibalising its own market through its pricing structure. Not exclusive to ExpressVPN, everyone seems to be jumping on the cash grab. Months of service failure after good experience earlierI’ve been using ExpressVPN for around a year as a paid user locates in China. It used to be working all good and brought me desirable experience. But since this September, Express constantly fails to provide me the services I purchased. At this moment I didn’t see any big events going on in China, I asked my friend who also uses Express and he less-frequently encounters connection failure. I’ve done what the official blog tells user in China to do, update App, correct settings, wait connection, etc., all efforts in vain. I also switched among home wifi, cellular data, and smart phone hotspot, still, I couldn’t get stable connections. Compared with the great experience before September, current situation is very confusing. Also I noticed there’s no live-chat service anymore but only Email us service under Help category, while last year there was. Use in China UpdateI’ve used ExpressVPN for over 2 years in China. For the most part, it has been good until recently. The blocks have been so strong that I haven’t been able to access the VPN for weeks or even the Status Page. If it suddenly comes on, it’s for about 3 minutes and then off again. I have no contact with most of the outside world or know what is happening around China. I need friends from overseas to copy and paste info that I can’t access. It really is the Dark Ages. There hasn’t been an update for iOS for weeks and some updates previously haven’t been very successful. Good at first.... but now it barely worksI’ve been using Express (or trying to) almost everyday since I arrived in China in April 2018. At first it was very reliable and fast. However occasionally the VPN would go for periods of being unable to connect (usually for a day or two). Now the problem has continued to grow and I’ve been paying for an app that is faulty more days than it is working. I have free VPNS that are inconsistent but they still manage to somewhat work whereas Express stops working entirely for days/weeks at a time. (Even when it works only 2 locations work) Furthermore the customer service is awful. They refuse to refund and their only advice is to make sure the app is updated. Then when the issues are fixed there’s no notifications... so sometimes it stops working for a week and then I didn’t know it was working again unless I’m trying to connect everyday🤦‍♂️. At the moment the only thing stopping me from cancelling and finding a new vpn provider is finding a decent vpn owned by a Chinese company so I can pay in RMB not £. (Chinese ones are waaaaaay cheaper FYI) There’s about 17 people in my company using it that are waiting to find a better solution... I recently cancelled auto renewal on this service as the VPN signal keeps dropping. VPN location keeps switching to CanadaThis morning, I ordered ExpressVPN in order to be able to stream live TV from the United States while I am in Canada (Vancouver, BC). Express VPN keeps assigning my VPN location as Ontario, Canada, which literally defeats the purpose of having a VPN for live streaming! I have to keep going into the app and changing my location to Seattle in order to be able to stream live TV. Once I change my location in the app, it works fine. But I have had to manually change my location five times today alone. I wonder if this is a function of having ordered the VPN today while in Canada…? Whereas last year, I ordered it before I left the United States. I was in Mexico for three months and had no such problems, my VPN was somewhere in New Jersey and live streaming was seamless. Living in China? Do NOT get this.Do NOT recommend for China. I’ve had ExpressVPN for almost 1 year now and it is rarely consistent. There is at least one problem each month where you’ll be unable to connect. These instances usually last days and the customer service can’t help, ever. As I write this the app has just had an update and is now not connecting to any location. I’m sure the app is good in other locations as it has great reviews from other places. Users in China - Stay awayDespite claiming to be the best VPN service for users in China, in their wide spread and targeted advertising campaigns, the unfortunate truth is they are far from being the best and they have become progressively worse over the past few years. Instead of spending all their time with marketing, I recommend that the engineers they claim are always working to restore service are actually doing that. Customer service lacking and I got so frustrated after having no connectivity earlier in 2023 ( for up to a month on one occasion) that I finally went to another option. Least cost-effective choice in ChinaI have been using it for almost 3 years and now I finally decided to cancel subscription for its awful performance in China. It was one of the best, but now it hardly works. Sometimes it says “connected” but in fact it doesn’t. When there used to be some political events in China which may cause troubles on connecting, the technicians were trying to fix it and it usually got back to normal in a few days. UnusableThis VPN doesn’t go two minutes without dropping out and taking around 20 seconds to reconnect. I often find myself wondering why things aren’t loading, then opening the app to see the ‘Reconnecting...’ status. I usually have to open the app manually and babysit it to get it to reconnect as it rarely does so automatically. Every time I lock and unlock my phone the VPN spends 20 seconds reconnecting. All this is on the latest version and independent of the server and connection type/strength. Reinstalling configurations hasn’t helped, nor has changing the protocol. Obviously, being constantly disconnected defeats the point of having a mobile device. This is a shame because when it does work, the service is really fast and useful, especially on other platforms (macOS and Windows). Great app, buggy on PCsThis program works extremely well on my iPhone and iPad. I use it while traveling internationally which allows me to watch news and U.S. TV shows using my apps with no problem. This really makes travel a lot easier as I can stay up to date with America. It is also reassuring to know that I am not being spied on while using public WiFi. ExpressVPN does not work well on my PC. I do a lot of home video editing using CyberLink Power Director 14 and occasionally 16. These programs would no longer create my videos in MP4 format. This problem first occurred shortly after installing Express VPN Keys. After checking for and installing all available updates for all programs, including Express VPN, the problem persisted. I uninstalled Express VPN from my PC and the MP4 production problem disappeared. Another problem I have had involves my WiFi not working on my PC when Express VPN is connected to a server. Same as always with a VPNThese things are always the same for me. Yes, some work and do actually get me what I want in terms of watching things in other countries, but the flaw in this & every VPN I’ve tried, is that it slows down everything I want ant to do on my phone, and not by just a few, or even ten seconds, it literally takes about a minute to load any webpage or any video content while I’ve got a VPN running. I just can’t take that sort of delay in using the Internet. Shame no negative rating availableIf possible I would give this App a negative rating! I firstly tried with Express VPN in 2022 in China and it was working fine. Used to be much better...I have lived in Beijing, China for 4 years and have only ever used Express VPN on my Mac. It was reliable and fast for 3 and a half years. Then the political conferences started. Things have definitely taken a downward spiral for Express since then. It always crashes on my iPhone (doesn’t even let me sign in on my iPhone X) but I use a free vpn on it now anyway. Express constantly needs updating to the latest app. Even when I’ve updated, it tells me that it’s not the latest update (hang on, sorry?) Super Expensive Unreliable VPNYou know why it’s secure? Because you can’t get on the internet in the first place. The constant reconnection. App not ready - do not buy!I installed the app with its default settings, but the app immediately started reporting that it could never connect, internet traffic blocked. When I contacted support, they told me to ignore that message because the app was really protecting my identity. Really?! How can a company put out a product that is solely intended to protect one’s identify, but the app cannot confidently report that it’s doing so? Avoid this company!They are horrible! I signed up for the free trial. After checking out their services all seemed ok. Then I tried to change the firmware on my router to their firmware which was supposedly required. It messed my router up. Since my router stopped working I reached out to support, or what then call support. Next day email response was the best available and even then it wasn’t next day most of the time. To fix this problem, under those circumstances, would have pushed me past the free trial period. I called ASUS instead as it was their brand of router. Good at first, now not so much.I initially was all about Express VPN. In the beginning it worked as advertised. Two months later would drop unexpectedly and phishing spam seem to increase at alarming rate about that same time. Here lately it says I’m connected but apps or browsers report “timed out” or “no internet connection”. Tried different servers and that solves the problem short term only as the same issues creep back up, sometimes only after a day or two. I’ve had to uninstall the app on at least 3 occasions to get it working. It does what it advertises but only w/certain browsers. It does work w/all major streaming platforms, you might have to try a few servers to find one that it will work with but that’s to be expected. I got this app & subscription because I would not connect to a public WiFi/hotspot or even Barnes & Noble network for fear of my personal info being compromised, &, at the time our carrier did not have unlimited data. Connecting to a public hotspot is 50/50 that it’ll work smoothly, but I suspect that has more to do with the way the public hotspot is configured because on a private network this app works decent, when it works. WARNING: No mobile kill switch!I spent so many hours looking at reviews of the best VPN services and Express and Nord were always at the top of the list. I decided with this one because it seemed like the fastest. BUT when I downloaded the app I was informed by the support (very quick btw) that unlike their desktop apps, their mobile apps have no kill switch feature to block internet if you’re not connected to the VPN. I witnessed my device try and connect to the VPN lots of times but was unsuccessful, and I had no way of knowing this unless I wasn’t actually looking for the VPN icon that appears at the top of my phone. This feature is critical to anyone who never wants their privacy broken. I want a RELIABLE VPN that works all of the time on all of my devices. If my phone can still connect to WiFi and data for a while before the VPN connects and protects me, I’m still vulnerable for a brief time and that defeats the whole point of the VPN. Nord has this feature on their mobile devices and when I asked Express’s support about this, they said “We can also file this as a service request to our engineers and if we get enough similar requests for it, they can prioritize to have this feature fully functional on the future versions of the ExpressVPN app.” Why would you not automatically put this feature on the app to protect users? I guess we either have to wait before they implement it or have people request it to get this feature, but for me Nord looks better at the moment..Version: 6.8.1

Beware. Difficult to cancel = more expensive than you thinkThis worked just fine for me on my travels through Indonesia and Qatar. I sometimes had to reset and change locations, but turning it on and off was so easy. The same can't be said for the subscription. It is very difficult to stop charges being made when you don't want or are no longer using the service. There seems no way to cancel. There is just an option to pause automatic payments. But that is done through the website, not the app, and it takes multiple confirmation steps. I was charged for two months in a row, so far, despite attempting to stop payments and even though I raised issues with the help desk (who did not provide help). The service, which I needed for literally just on one week, has now cost me US$50! I'd look elsewhere for a VPN service if you plan to use it for a limited time..Version: 11.83.0

Terrible Service in ChinaI’m not sure why the service is so bad the past couple of months. They sent out an email a while ago saying they were doing what they could to rectify the situation, but it was vague and nothing’s changed. Refused to refund me and it did not work in China at all.Downloaded the app in Hong Kong prior to entering China. I’ve got connected for less than 10 seconds after trying for an hour. Had to contact my friends who’s in the UK to search solution on google for me. Still Emailed support regarding the issue, gave me the same tips that my friend found online. This VPN must have paid a lot of Chinese influencers to advertise it. That’s the reason why I downloaded it because they said it worked in China. Improved connectivity?Not so much... so sorry I did this update! This is just par for the course with this service. Having an iPhone, it is important that I stay connected to receive timely messages. I’ve never had this experience in the year I’ve had this service. I actually set up a shortcut to bump my WiFi off and on to get reconnected, and I use that shortcut constantly because the app requires I hit the circled X to disconnect from the service to choose another location. That leaves my connection unsecured. And if I want to use a location not in the main list, I have to enable the All Locations option every. single. time., though I choose that option every. single. time. I mean, how hard is it to have a list of favorites at least? It seems to be designed for maximum aggravation. And I’ve also been through the “try this... try this... “ tech support theater. C’mon folks, how hard is it to create a better user experience? Staying connected more than three minutes and changing locations shouldn’t be this frustrating. Service getting worseI’ve had express VPN for almost 2 years while living in China and at first it was honestly great. However, recently it has been absolutely terrible... there are new connectivity problems every week and this has been going on for months and before that there were still problems at least every few weeks. I know of people who are even using free VPN’s here in China and they are receiving better services! I never complain and I always understand that things happen beyond control but it’s just becoming a joke now. We pay money for this service yet half the time we can’t use it. You claim to be the best VPN for living in China and while that might have been the case a few years ago, it certainly isn’t now. Great if it's working, which is rareExpress worked for a couple of weeks in China and then it essentially became unusable. The only solution support gives is to please be patient. It promises a lot, but doesn't deliver. There are better VPNs out there for China. Edit following developer response: I contacted your support and what I essentially got was that Express was working on the problem and to be patient. In the meantime, my other vpn just kept working. So if I have already contacted support, why should I do so again? Or do you just respond to try to save face because of all the bad reviews you are getting lately? Rarely use now on IOS16I loved my express VPN subscription for awhile. It does lack some extra features on iOS like split tunneling and advanced customization like automations etc. However, ever since I bought a new iPhone the experience with the Express VpN app and service has been a headache. It completely broke the wireless CarPlay experience. I’d have to remember to turn it off before getting into my car, ignoring the hassle of it I’d usually forget anyway. When that happens I would have to go and turn off the vpn, then go to CarPlay settings and turn off CarPlay, then re-enable it. Sometimes that didn’t work, so I’d either have to forget car and re-link and/or power cycle my phone. This is a huge hassle and basically removes all the added convenience of wireless CarPlay for the usually short trips I make in my car everyday. Another issue was that my phone would lose all connectivity overnight quite a few times and turning off/on VPN did not seem to work. I’d have to power cycle my phone…ugh. Beginning to sense a pattern here. Ever since I stopped using my express vpn neither of these issues have occurred again. I will not be using this service until ExpressVPN and/or apple get their act together. Quality goes rapidly downI use Express VPN for years now with yearly subscription. The connection has too many interruptions, cuts downloads and FaceTime calls endlessly to the point of frustration. Another minus is that some of the locations are not supporting imap function for E-Mails like Portugal and other. It hasn’t been fixed yet even with the complain to the support. While I bought a surfshark subscription as a backup for a 5th of the price, I made with them better experiences. ExpressVPN makes super fast connections.. but they don’t last long. Surfshark is terrible long in connection time with no interruptions. I habe to admit I used 85% of the time ExpressVPN now I moved over to surfshark 80% of the time. I still trust ExpressVPN bc I am so many years with them, but the quality dropped the last year. I found on Apple devices surfshark more stable, while on macs I miss the imap functionality on my favorite locations. ExpressVPN you can do better. The competition does not sleep, also the rates are significantly lower. Your support called them budget vpns. I am not agreeing with them. Blocks All Internet ConnectionWorked fine in the beginning then it began sparingly blocking most or all internet connection. I stumbled upon this by turning it off finally and miraculously everything working properly. Unfortunately I didn’t discover this until some months after having the app. Additionally, I discovered that some websites still know my location. I’m outside the U.S. I’ve tried going to a U.S. website to make a purchase and I was rerouted to its foreign counterpart. Very frustrating as Asian sizes are not the same as American sizes. So I’m going to have to delete and go back to my old VPN. Update: I discovered that not Express VPN is not the only VPN that that doesn’t totally hide your location. When trying to watch live sporting events with other VPNs, my my location was still discovered, so I added one star to the rating. Although I didn’t use their customer support, they responded to my review very quickly. They seem to really care about their product. Do not use for China!Express is unfortunately extremely unreliable for use in China. I’ve experienced periods of several weeks where it functions wonderfully on my laptop with minimal issues, then it’s followed with constant disconnecting and failure to connect. Even while it functions well on my laptop, it will absolutely not work on my phone or tablet concurrently. This is a feature they explicitly say is something they have, several connected devices, but it does not work. Even if it says connected on my phone or tablet, it will not actually function and I can’t open anything I should be able to. Instead the browser will act as though I’m not connected to the internet. And there are constant updates which would make you think it would get fixed but no, I’ve updated my app during a period where it’s been working and then after the update it will no longer connect. If I were to put it into my own statistic perspective (so take this with a grain of salt) I would say it works 60% of the time on my laptop, 40% of the time on my tablet, and 15% of the time on my phone. Continued Problems In Mainland ChinaI’ve used this VPN in mainland China for about three and a half years and for the first three years it was great. However over the last four to six months this VPN has really struggled to connect at all. Having paid for another years subscription in April, I messaged the support team about two weeks ago to discuss cancellation of my subscription and was told I would receive an email, I have not. Going to a rival meWas good for a few months then started to have loads of problems, list as long as my arm. Constantly drops connection, Some locations don’t show then they do , An online check for dns leak shows 30 servers to expressvpns 6/8. And non of them are listed as ExpressVPN servers. A lot to be desiredBeing a subscriber since August 2020 while traveling in Taiwan and China during this period of time. Using it while in Taiwan was no problem at all. Access was pretty smooth and successful anytime. However, within China, it was a totally different experience. The VPN version used on my devices is pretty up-to-date since I check constantly. Within China, connection is hardly ever successful the first try at all times and the process seems sluggish regardless of the VPN locations (Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, and US, etc.) I tried. Even when connected, the connection didn’t seem to be stable and long lasting. I said so because I have a company-used VPN on my devices as well. So, when I get frustrated with Express VPN at home, I will take advantage of the company VPN. When I do so, I pretty much get connected right away. There is nothing proprietary about the company VPN because it is just an app downloaded from the Apple App Store except the company pays the subscription. I’m still giving Express VPN benefit of the doubt due to the good comments I read online. I have had this VPN for around two months and I can count the number of times it has successfully connected (and stayed connected for as long as I need it to) on one hand. It really is that bad. Unreliable ServiceI paid for ExpressVPN as I was holidaying in China with no access to my social media. From the moment I landed overseas the service did not work or solve any of my issues, it actually made the content that wasn’t blocked not work either. I tried all troubleshooting steps, while also being told by support that China is a tough country to consistently work. That isn’t good enough, the entire point of getting a VPN for most people is to solve the issues. For something that you have to pay for, it should be a moderately working app. Went two weeks of my trip without internet access, I switched to a free VPN on the App Store and that has worked so much better which is unbelievable. ExpressVPV is brokenI recently decided to switch over from another provider to ExpressVPN. I subscribed to 1 month only to test it out before I commit to the 12 month subscription. At first it worked okay. Few days later my favourite app, FOXTEL GO stopped working. I raised a ticket with support, and they advised me to use split tunnelling...this is not available on my iPhone and iPad. So the way I look at this, no solution was provided. So unless they do something to fix this issue like change to new IP, or update iOS app to use split tunnelling, I’m not subscribing for additional 12 months. Crashes on iOS - So UnreliableThey seem to issue bug fixes every week on this product that just introduces more issues on the iOS devices. Poor support and terrible product that stops working intermittently. Time to look at NORD! As an update to the developer response, the connectivity issues occur every time you release an update, which always appears untested. We have tried this on two devices (iPhone XSMax and iPhone 8, both running the latest iOS), each device will connect to your VPN and when it switched to cellular or back to WiFi, the VPN actually stops working but also prevents and data flow until you stop the VPN or restart it. In the last two months we have reported this issue and the application crashing and tried all the diagnostic steps, but to be fair this product shouldn’t be updated until it is tested correctly and it should never be a case of using the customer base to test for bugs! Vague subscription “cancellation” processTried to cancel and thought I did so successfully however I continued to be billed. It turned out that after “turning off auromatic renewal” and receiving the reminder to make a payment before the next billing cycle in order to keep my account active, I would again be billed the following month. Absolutely disappointed.I’ve been with this service since 2016, but this year I made a huge mistake by extending my membership. 30 days money back is only for the new customers, before they give their money to the company and old ones are not protected at all. Terrible service in China… do not buy!!I got express VPN back in 2018 when I first moved abroad for work in order to maintain contact with friends and family and also still have access to my favorite online streaming platforms. For the first few years it was great, however perhaps starting last year it has been much harder to maintain a consistent connection. Desperate, dark marketingThe service works all right, certainly nothing to write home about. The company’s founder has a suspicious history with invasive ad tracking companies which does make one wonder… However it is the dark marketing practices that led me here. In short, the forcing customers to enroll in auto-renewal, the lack of an App Store subscription option (probably because it’s too easy to cancel your subscription!) and the difficulty in canceling a subscription through the company should all give a person pause. If your service is so great, why do you have to erect enormous walls to keep people in? It smells sleezy, it reeks of today’s internet profit-over-customer approach to everything. IOS 11.5.0 ConcernPersonal experience - IOS update changes offered protocols to Lightway UDP, lightway TCP and IKEv2. The previous UDP and TCP protocols have been removed. Given that Lightway is supposed to be faster with better connectivity and security, my conducted speed checks find the protocol much slower. In order that I maintain better speeds, the protocol best used is IKEv2 (not automatic) as this speed is the same as the Lightway protocol. I am very disappointed, as I have been excitedly waiting for Lightway protocol, and the first introduction has not been very good. I have purchased annual subscription so will be watching updates carefully. I have also spoken to the Team via Chat. They have been courteous and considerate to my complaint. I genuinely hope that they will resolve this promptly, given that I do like their service. This issue is enough to push me to search for another provider, but do think that they deserve an opportunity to make good on their in-house built protocol. By submitting this review, I believe it to be fair to all concerned, but advise users to consider whether to update their app to 11.5.0. Not working at all in ChinaI live in Sydney and I have to travel to China for a month in the January 2023. I purchased one month plan for the purpose of using the high rated VPN in China so I can stay in touch with my work, my family and many more. But when I landed in China and turned on this VPN, it was struggling to connecting all the servers I was trying to connect. The VPN was redirecting at all times and it will never connect to every single server. It won’t connect no matter I was using a wifi or mobile data! And there was a strange thing that when I turned on the VPN I lost my wifi connection and turned it off, wifi come back automatically. Luckily, I can access to Apple Store to write this review. Great service and app but dodgy business practicesI have been using ExpressVPN for years. The service is excellent, and the app is top notch. Recently I decided switch away just to try another VPN, I found it’s very difficult to unsubscribe the service. The UI for unsubscribe is designed to trick people from doing so, where you had to confirm twice to disable auto-renew. Even after I disabled auto-renew, they still charged me. Constant disconnectI’ve used express for some years now. I’m the last 6 or so months I got disconnected when I lost phone signal and then got signal again the vpn would not reconnect. (Happened through 2 different iPhones) Now recently I get numerous disconnects during the day for no reason, full phone signal populated area it disconnects, and it’s like the app glitches, and won’t reconnect without resetting my phone. Good but unstableI’ve been using ExpressVPN for a couple of years now. From my experience with other providers in the past they are the better service provider, with uses over multiple platforms, a good support team and a decent software. What happened?Im based in China and this app use to function really well until maybe 2 years ago when we had constant connection problems. We wouldnt be able to connect to any of the recommended servers or even other ones we think would work. I get that these thinks happen sometimes and in the past it would only be for 2-5 days every 3/4 months that we had connection problems but now its more frequent and we wouldn’t be able to connect to any of the servers for up to 2 weeks and sometimes longer. Pretty useless with Kayo & Binge, good with the restKayo & Binge (stream motion) are a big problem to access. Sometimes OK (at best) where you need to keep restreaming as the stream stops & other times, nothing at all. Unusable - need help!Hey there, I’m finding it impossible to connect to ExpressVPN while in mainland China. I read through your support and troubleshooting instructions but none of them have worked for me. Essentially I can’t access the internet (including sites that should be accessible in China) once I connect to a VPN server in the app. My internet works when I disconnect from the VPN so I know the issue is not connectivity. I also don’t know if I’d be able to access blocked sites even if I overcome this first hurdle. Good VPN... When it actually worksI’ve been using ExpressVPN for a few months now. When it’s connected and working properly it’s a pretty good service. Before the latest update I would occasionally have a connection drop, but it didn’t happen often enough to bother me. Since the update my iPhone is constantly disconnecting from the VPN servers. Doesn’t matter what server I connect to either. Sometimes when I unlock my phone it’ll have a hard time connecting back to the server and I’ll have to manually open the app and select a new one. Other times it’ll drop the connection while I’m using the internet. There is no warning for this. All of a sudden it just stops working and I have to disconnect and choose a new server. This happens at least 10x per day. My connection actually dropped while I was in the middle of typing this review. It’s incredibly frustrating. There’s also no kill switch in the app that I’m aware of so who knows if my info is being leaked. I understand every VPN service has connection issues from time to time but this is a constant thing. For the price of this service I expect much more out of it. I’ll be shopping around whenever my subscription expires..Version: 7.0.0

So disappointingSo 2022 I subscribed. Lots of teething problems but always quick to sort it via email. 2023 what a different company. My vpn does not work. I’ve reported it so many times I can’t count. I’m told to update - yes done that. Use a different protocol- yes done that. Use different location - yes done that. Now I’m told it’s a fault. Recent updates freezing and blocking all internetBeen using for 2-3 years but recent changes have made it every time I update the app whilst being connected it freezes and blocks all internet access, the most recent was the worse were I had to temporarily delete the app and remove express vpn permission in settings. It took me some time to realise that this was what I needed to do and was time consuming and inconvenient. I can update when not connected to the vpn but annoying to have to remember to disconnect before updating everything.Version: 11.107.0

You can only cancel subscription via chat on the website.That’s definitely a fishy tactic to keep users around. All in all I have been satisfied. But I am using this review as a way to 1. Notify you of it. Because I am sure it will not be something most people appreciate. 2. Hopefully let Apple know of it, because there are many users like me who started using this service by downloading the app from the App Store and then converted to credit card subscription so they can use it on their Mac as well. Here’s the whole story: I started using this service with the iOS subscription. I then needed it on my Mac so I move to a CC subscription. Now I wanted to cancel it I went to the site. I search ‘cancel’ in the help section and there it was written that ‘Customer paying with credit card or Paypal will not see manage settings if they have already turned off automatic renewal. For further assistance please contact the express vpn support team via live chat. On the chat with the support person they I said I wanted to cancel my subscription. The rep told me ‘Thanks please bear with me for 2-3 minutes while I quickly review your accounts ‘ the immediately followed with asking why I was to leave the service. I replied that I find it a fishy tactic bit to provide with a cancel button. The rep then told me that there’s actually a way to do that. So I went ahead and did it. It works ok...I’ve been using express VPN for close to a year now in China, it works only sometimes. Some days it connects almost instantly, other days it takes half an hour to connect. Some days it won’t connect at all..Version: 7.4.2

And to make matters worse, immediately after trying to connect, the app blocks all connection to the internet so your web browser is rendered useless. Connection stability is mediocrePros: easy to use. lots of countries to select a server in. Cons: connections to servers are reasonable but do drop out. Servers become unavailable and you end up ping ponging your connection between alternative servers within the same country. I want a connection that is seamless and consistent. Another gripe is the dedicated vpn app takes over control of the iOS vpn switches, i.e. If I want to turn vpn off via the iOS switch, the dedicated vpn app will override your iOS selection and turn the vpn back on. You have to turn the vpn off via the dedicated vpn app. Why does the dedicated vpn app not complement the iOS app switches making the vpn connection (on/off) operable from both iOS and the app? Over all this is a straight forward easy to use vpn service but could do with some small improvements..Version: 7.4.4

Hope for the best expect the worst.I’ve been with express for over 2 years whilst living in China, and I understand that China is known for its internet crackdowns, but paying nearly $100 compared to other vpn services is too much. Ive gone weeks before with no connection, when its claimed to be the best one for China, it drops constantly, and there are no added benefits for subscribing for another year, I have seen other comments that have complained about the same thing, would be nice to see some sort of reward for staying loyal. Trying to trick people into signing up?Downloaded the app. My email was rejected when I tried to sign up for the free 7 day trial account. Dishonest process to cancel subscriptionThe website requires you to “cancel automatic renewal” three times before it is actioned. After the second time it confirms you have to make a payment before your next renewal date to keep your subscription active. This reads like a confirmation your account is no longer active unless you pay. However, they are still keeping it active despite this message. You are meant to click “cancel automatic renewal” again to action it even though there is nothing on the screen to clarify this. Good for the west onlyI have been living in china for the past year and I have to say that the service has been worse than pretty all of the free VPN’s I’ve tried. Even the free ones go down on the national holidays, then get fixed within a week; the only difference is that express costs £100 for two years! Their support is good and in the UK where I’m from, it works flawlessly and it’s really good. Unfortunately, I can’t use it in china almost at all. The connection ratio is like 20:80 it almost never works and when it does it usually disconnects within half an hour. Contacting support makes no difference, you just get copy and pasted answers. I wouldn’t recommend this VPN for china. They parade around how secure it is but at least make it work first and THEN make it secure! Why dues this scam app have 5 star reviews?It doesn’t work at all. Blocked by all sportsbooks and will bill you 135 a year anyway. There needs to be a class action lawsuit now!!!!! Great... when it worksBeen in and out of China for a year, Express VPN works 25% of the time. When it works it’s awesome. But it only really works when they release an update - and then two or three days after the update is released, it stops working again. The real shame, is that there are other FREE VPNs that although aren’t as quick, work 90% of the time. Honestly, I’ve pretty much given up wasting 5-10 minutes of my time trying to connect to Express VPN especially when there’s a strong chance it’s not going to connect anyway. I’ve contacted their support team a few times, tried all the recommended locations, and after a year or so of using it (following their best practice), I will likely subscribe to a different VPN provider in China..Version: 7.4.4

Ok, has problems.I’m only giving it two stars, because it has problems. I’ve been running the vpn for six months. And it often goes through stages of disconnecting, and you’re waiting for it to connect when you open your phone. I’ve switch servers, and it does it on every server. I’ve messed with their setting. And there is no smooth running in the background. It often feels like you’re fighting it to stay connected. And it often lags my internet speeds. And requires me to shut it off. I paid 100$ for a year. And I regret it everyday. I often hear how well other vpn are working for people and become jealous. The flip side. “When” it works. It does it’s job. Not reliable enough for China usersBeen living in China for over 5 years and using this service for the last 3. At first it was excellent but from 2019 and definitely 2020 it is just not reliable enough. It seems that as soon as China has some sort of ‘activity’ there goes the VPN for several days until an update is released that resolves the problem. I’m still using it (this time only renewed for 6 months, not a year) because the interface is easy to use and quite frankly I’m not sure how much longer I’ll stay here, but if I was staying more long term I would definitely change. Of all my friends who were using it, and recommended it to me, I’m the only one still using it. Interestingly, random free VPN service providers have been more reliable and I find I’m using them more often. Variable performanceGood app but found it was slow and didn’t always connect when travelling through Australia and didn’t connect at all in China. The China experience was with hotel wifi so that could ha e been the problem. I do like the way it automatically turns on when connecting to wifi to prevent that initial burst. EXPRESS RIP OFFI use to be a big fan of Express VPN... now I am a big hater! When I had my account before the time the COVID-19 started... I travelled all over the world. Express VPN gave me the sense of security and confidence they had offered. I let my subscription expire since no more traveling... but things have changed again. So now I need to travel... so Express VPN came to mind and I opened my account again. My mistake... the app worked smoothly before... no connection problems... just a simple list of cities of the connections areas that I could choose from. Now... I don’t get connected... I cannot use the internet or connect properly because the VPN is not connecting. I cannot use another city location because it only shows what it thinks is the best. Once again... too many upgrades have ruined the perfect recipe for satisfaction. You took a great app and made it into a mediocre app like do many other apps that are already out there. Awful ServiceI have lived in China for 4 months. I was told that ExpressVPN was the best VPN to use, so I purchased an annual subscription and am sorely regretting it given the cost. Free VPN’s work better than this and stay connected for longer. Even when express has worked, it disconnects all the time. It’s so slow, I can barely load webpages. It works better on data than on WiFi. I understand that China have regular security updates, but ExpressVPN are not delivering a good service in comparison to other VPN’s. Last month, I attempted to contact support. Upon finding out I was based in China, I was given generic response emails. I’m not even sure if I spoke to a real human as I received such polished information with no help or relevance and no one answered my questions. Cancelled after being loyal customer for yearsAfter requesting this BASIC feature for YEARS with customer support, you have still not implemented a simple DARK MODE in your app. This is something that EVERY other app on my phone has, and your app is literally ONE screen making it far easier to implement than most other apps. Clearly ExpressVPN care very little about their customers and prefer them to use their app less and less until they cancel and use a competitor. I have had enough with the blinding white eye-strain and false promises from customer support, so I’ve cancelled after being loyal for years and have gone elsewhere. Not the best VPN for China!I’ve just read a review about a user in China so I’d also like to share my experience of using this vpn. It’s totally unreliable. It connects on average 6 days out of 10 (if you’re lucky!). I’ve been left without a vpn for up to 8 days on several occasions over the past two years when my colleagues who are using another cheaper one (I suppose I’m not allowed to mention the name!) have remained connected over the same time period. It’s been a real hassle and inconvenience to have to rely on your services! I have to reconfigure on a daily or biweekly basis; this is often ineffective. I’ve followed all the other required instructions but to no avail. It’s not like me to leave bad reviews but since you claim to be able to provide a service to your customers and charge quite a lot for it, I believe the public deserves the truth. A free vpn that I found in my App Store actually connects when yours is ineffective! It’s obviously not very powerful but it does connect and has been a lifesaver for me. Needless to say I’m not the only in this situation and would like a refund! Lol! I suppose not all wishes come true! :).Version: 8.2.1
