Espresso from The Economist for Negative User Reviews

New Update - no more free useUse to love this app and would read the news updates every morning. However since the new update - there is no longer 1 free article each day. So only bother downloading this app if you’re happy to pay $30 a month for your news. I think there are better alternatives for that price seeing as this is supposed to be just bite sized news stories..Version: 2.5

Just doesn’t workThe full Economist app works great on my iPhone 8 running iOS 16.1. the Espresso app gets stuck on the page that says: “What to expect” (Daily…. Weekly) no option to scroll - only a “back” arrow in top left. I’ve tried deleting and reinstalling the app, no joy..Version: 3.0.0

Buggy for Audio - I wish they’d support podcastsI mainly listen to the Economist. The App is a poor way to listen. Why have Economist insisted on creating their own audio capability when millions of developers are already working on podcast players?.Version: 1.5.16

Connection problemsThe problem I have with this app is even when the day’s content has been downloaded it normally needs internet connectivity to display it. So reading out of reception, for example on the Tube, is often impossible..Version: 2.15.0

Where did the playlist function go?You used to be able to download and listen to the audio sections in the order that you want. For example I like to listen to Business, the Science and Tech, then choose which region, US or Europe depending on what had happened in the last week. Since the new version release I can no longer do that, I'm forced to listen in order of top to bottom. I think it's a real shame that feature is lost and would love to see it back..Version: 1.3

Superb except for a screen-fitting bugOn my smaller phone, iPhone SE, the quote sections that show up at the end of the reading sessions frequently fail to print the entire quote of the quote is longer than a few lines. This is probably because the app is designed for larger screens but it is also a concern since this only became an issue with more recent updates. Please fix it. Thanks!.Version: 1.5.4

It’s great… Swipe oh, an in-line add…I love this app so much, it’s handy to get small bitesize news articles. Everything is written concisely in an dense info packet. I believe recently there was an update which made the ads slightly more intrusive. Before, I would swipe and there would be an ad (that’s fine - I understand that ads are important for this kind of media). However, now I get onto an article and then the ad loads and covers over the article. I find myself more inclined to swipe away the ad before I read what it’s actually about because it’s a little more intrusive. Please change it back. Otherwise this is a 5 star app from a world class magazine..Version: 1.9.8

Where’s the markets in brief section? And why do you keep logging me out?I really liked the markets in brief section of Espresso, and yet when I updated the app because it keeps logging me out and saying I don’t have a subscription when I do, that section is gone! It was really helpful and just perfect, so why did you remove it? And it’s not in the Economist app either when I downloaded it! Please bring it back. :(.Version: 1.8.9

New updates bring regressionBefore the “new format” one could see articles from that current week in case you missed a day. The devs took that away! What are they thinking??!! I believe they are trying to Pavlovian train us to open their app every day. I use to love this app, and overall, I like the new format, but taking away the ability to see some past days makes this app expendable to me. I have unsubscribed in protest! Please bring this back, plus the quote of the day. Won’t resubscribe until you do!.Version: 2.6.0

IOS 9.35 Flash BackMy system is iOS 9.35, but the app is always flash back when I click..Version: 1.5.7

Not getting better ....I have used the app for at least 5 years now. It’s my usual cycling companion. Little by little I have watched the engineering decline and judgement grow worse. Bluetooth buffering has been a consistent flaw that they can’t seem to get right. On certain devices when there is a pause, the resumption is delayed. Poor QA practices. UI is not really improving and in the audio section is plain bad. I pay for the subscription. Can I expect not to have to “swipe left” to avoid the upfront ad? The swipe is poorly done so 3 out of times you end up clicking. That’s called a clickbait - is that Economist wishes? When first introduced, it was annoying. Now that it is always shown even when you are simply returning to continue on the article you were reading or listening to, it’s just plain offensive. You think that extra half a cent worth the damage to you brand’s image? Poor judgement on the app diminishes a great magazine..Version: 1.5.9

Annoying, minor and easily solvable technical issueThis app had one minor annoying issue, it won’t sync what is read across devices. I read it on my phone in the morning, but when I open my iPad in the evening the stories show as unread. This is a Minor issue, but perhaps working across multiple devices and having slight OCD are a combination more common in readers of The Economist than in the general population. Since this happens 6 days a week, it merits being fixed. Thank you..Version: 1.5.12

A nice summary of world events, but adverts!I really liked the espresso app until adverts popped up two days ago. I just think it’s unnecessary when you are paying a subscription. I could understand if it was free. And they will ping up when you are half way through reading one of the articles. Very annoying..Version: 1.5.16

Perfect but for one thingDespite being a paid app, this app also seems to contain full screen ads with no visual clues on how to skip them (swipe). I don’t mind ads but it’s a bit rich having such large and obnoxious (and irrelevant) ones in an app I’m also paying to use. Ads aside, it’s a good app - cheaper and concise access to daily highlights from an otherwise prohibitively expensive publication..Version: 1.9.8

Disgracefully hard to unsubscribe.I have tried many times to unsubscribe and still cannot find any way of doing it. Incredibly frustrating. Expected more of a publication with as much credibility as the economist. It’s just disappointing..Version: 1.7.2

Ok so farI have three complaints so far: 1) the largest font size available is still far too small. I can’t read articles on the train without drawing phone irritatingly close to my face. 2) in-app links don’t work. I press the link, but it doesn’t take me to the linked article. 3) when i click to open an article from the website in the app it doesn’t work promptly - or at all. I have to first force-close the app then click the “open” website link. App definitely needs improvement..Version: 1.9.8

The closest thing to Yahoo News DigestI’ve been looking for a replacement for Yahoo News Digest since it was abandoned and this is the closed I’ve found — app doesn’t feel quite as nice but does the job with good length briefings. Wish it included meta data about articles for the uninformed like the location on google maps, a Wikipedia snippet and more images..Version: 1.5.16

DisappointingThe selection of short articles is very limited and the articles are not very informative and lack depth -they are very superficial. Not what I expected from the Economist whose magazine is noted for its depth of reportage. In addition it is quite unclear how to stop the automatic subscription renewal - $2.99 per month. To stop the auto payments you have to access itunes subscriptions from your Apple account under Settings - not an intuitive process. Beware!.Version: 1.5.12

Offline support and no ads for subscribersVery good content although I stopped my subscription because I couldn’t read articles offline while I am traveling. The app keeps trying downloading the latest. Also some ads are still showing even to subscribers..Version: 1.5.16

Drains batteryI like the thoughtful and intelligent articles. Unfortunately the app drains the battery on my phone. I was surprised to see that the battery on my phone was a lot lower on my phone at the end of the day than usual even though I was hardly using my phone. When I checked the battery information in settings it had nearly all been used by Espresso for "background activity". I uninstalled it and the battery usage went back to normal. It's a shame because the content is good..Version: 1.5.16

Annoying adsI am paying £2.29 per month to read news on this. Yet after the first article, there is always a full screen ad! Having to look at an ad in an app I am continuously paying for is just extremely frustrating to me..Version: 1.5.6

Scam! They make it so hard to unsubscribe.Version: 3.20.0

Great content, data update and caching needs improvementThe content is great, love to be able to read all the essentials in a couple minutes. But it loads slowly, and consistently times out on low bandwidth, which makes it hard to use when travelling abroad with slow internet. Also shouldnt try to fetch data every time unless a new version of the news has been published for that day. Update: Now its draining battery extremely fast with background activity even when its not used..Version: 1.8.5

Paid app with adsLiterally the only subscription app I know of with ads. Cancelled..Version: 1.9.8

Logging me outThe app keeps logging me out every day, very annoying..Version: 1.9.8

Negative changesI loved this app before the new version when I’m no longer able to access previous days of news. This is a lack of flexibility to catch up on previous days (I believe the previous version went back a week) & check back if desired. I don’t know why so much content was erased, less value for a higher cost too..Version: 2.9.4

Beware - incredibly difficult to cancel subscriptionThe app itself is a pretty basic source of news, the issue is with their subscription model. There is no way to cancel your subscription within the app or even on their website! I called their customer service number and was told I have to call ITunes directly to cancel. For an app to not have a way to cancel its own subscription is a joke. There are much better sources of news out there that don’t make you jump through hoops to cancel their subscription..Version: 1.5.6

Stop trying to trick me into changing my privacy settings!I finally deleted this app. It regularly opens up with confirming privacy settings but the misleading primary button doesn’t accept your current settings but permits all uses. NOT COOL. I expect better from the Economist..Version: 3.20.0

DowngradedThis is a very good summary news app, unfortunately n the latest version you cannot see previous editions of the week, so missing a day means missing the stories without considerable effort to go find them. That put a significant functionality downgrade in what was otherwise a pleasant upgrade on performance and reliability..Version: 2.14.0

Great content, terrible appThe Economist content is great - a nice little 'sip' of the day's important news. The problem is that the app simply does not work - six times out of seven I get a "Sorry, Things are moving slowly..." message and cannot get access to the day's news. This happens regardless even on stable, fast connections, so I am certain it is a problem at The Economist's end... Also (minor point) there is no update on Saturday or Sunday - that may be the weekend in some parts of the world, but not where I live!.Version: 1.0.21

Improvements neededThere needs to be an edition for Australia-NZ timezones and an option to remove ads..Version: 1.9.8

Free one?Where is one free article per day after updating.Version: 2.11.0

Overengineering a once great appI’ve been using Economist Espresso for a while now, and was recently considering buying a subscription. Since this new update however, the app is not only bloated and impractical, but also rendered useless for non-paying readers. If I have to be forced into buying a news subscription, I’d rather not buy one at all. Instead I shall spend my money on another publication. Seriously disappointing..Version: 2.5

Good, just mind the sexist languageSparse and punchy writing style, which is loved. The sexist language is appalling for a liberal publication. Eg references such as “the tax man” or the default pronoun being “he” are outdated and not appreciated. A few more quotes from women and a few more stories on gender would be good..Version: 1.5.12

Not worth itEconomist expresso is not worth the subscription fee and is also impossible to unsubscribe from.Version: 1.5.9

Used it for years, it’s broken.First off, there are ads. You pay for this app every month and they still have advertisements inside the app. 👍 What the killer was though, they updated the app and removed the ability to see the daily overview for up to a week before. Now you can only see the current day. It’s basically worthless at this point if you don’t open the app every single day. Uninstalled and stopped paying for this garbage..Version: 2.5

New version is USELESS for subscribersPlease, please go back to previous version. This one is just embarrassing. Where is the the CURRENT (i.e. today’s) version of The World in Brief? What is the POINT of even using this app if all there is to read is OLD news? Please allow users to SCROLL through WiB pages from previous days in the week. This app USED to be a useful way to quickly access the day’s leading political, business and financial news. Now it is little more than a collection of links to outdated articles on the Economist app, which, as an Economist subscriber, I can already access via the magazine or its very good app. If this app is now to be a separate tool to offer a watered-down version of the Economist, please clearly indicate it as such. Extremely disappointing..Version: 2.6.0

Comes out too lateThe news update comes out too late for Australian east coast users (and I imagine New Zealand!) I need my news available at 6am, otherwise i won’t get to it. This seems to come out between 7 and 8.30, and not at a consistent time, meaning I rarely get to read it..Version: 1.9.8

Stopped workingStopped working a few days ago.Version: 1.8.6

Too much passwordGreat app, too much password. Security isn’t that important - this isn’t my bank account and a refresh token will work just fine.Version: 1.9.8
