Down Among the Dead Men for Positive User Reviews

βœ“ Great readFabulous game love it and cheap compared to their other book-games!.Version: 1.0

βœ“ AlrightIf this was supposed to be on par with sorcery I would give it 3 stars, but it's not. The game has decent story that hints at a wider world with magic existing but neglects to explore it. The story was un dynamic depending on your gender choice except for a cheesy ending if you're female. It was fun though choosing the paths and making decisions like any game book and I couldn't put it down for a while. I'm giving it 4 stars because it's worth 99 cents and it's good to keep us a little entertained to not deter sorcery too much(They didn't pull another 80 days.).Version: 1.0

βœ“ It's the perfect way to spend a dollarLook if you're looking for another Sorcery or 80 days look elsewhere because that is not this game. But if you're looking for a fun little choose your own adventure game easily worth 99 cents then give this game a try..Version: 1.0

βœ“ Great adaptive storyI loved this. More and interactive book than game, you do get plenty of choices that subtly affect the tale (buy a weasel if you come upon one). The magic is this adaptation to your choices and Dave Morris' quirky and encapsulating writing and Inkle's presentation..Version: 1.0

βœ“ A great little adventureI'm a big fan of all of Inkle's games, and this is no exception. It's a great swashbuckling adventure that demands several playthroughs. While it's not up to the level of their others (short, lacking sound effects), that can be excused by the low price point..Version: 1.0

βœ“ GoodBeen playing for about 45 minutes and it's actually quite good, I'm enjoying it. Would recommend it to people to have a go with this app. πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘.Version: 1.0

βœ“ Simple but still a successThis game isn't as long or as rich as the studio's other games but for what it is (a choose-your-own-adventure story with fun characters and writing) it is a great success. It's not as game-y as their other apps but if you don't mind a genre story with some mild interactive elements go for it. And it's only a buck!.Version: 1.0

βœ“ TerrificBe aware this is a book -- a choose your own adventure book. You read a paragraph, then you make a decision -- for example, do you fight, hide, or run away? You then get a bit more of the story based on what you chose, then you make another decision, etc. It's well done, and a bargain at this price. If you like CYOA, or Inkle, this is a very safe purchase. I'm really glad I bought it..Version: 1.0

βœ“ Immersive Interactive FictionBefore you buy this app you should know that it is more a book than a game--functionally a choose-your-own-adventure style book. It is more linear and less expansive than the Sorcery! and 80 Days apps, but it still has replay value with different choices and plot effects stemming from them, and it's only 99 cents. Helped make a 5 hour plane flight much more bearable..Version: 1.0

βœ“ Well made effort, and worth every penny. The beginning of this game is really interesting. As a defecting pirate, you and your small band of crew mates have what feels like a whole ocean to explore. From Homeric false paradises ruled over by would be Circes and naiads to islands peopled by natives taken straight from the adventures of James Cook, from Flying Dutchman like ghost ships to Castaway like psychological and physical depredations, the first act of the story (namely, the voyage) has a real, honest to goodness feeling of pure adventure. Replaying it with various character presets just reinforced that feeling even more. The game is worth the .99 cent price of admission for that alone. Unfortunately, the rest of the game fails to live up to the standard it sets early on. There are fewer branching paths, and the settings are fairly pedestrian, almost like Disneyworld attractions, though the later game still has it's moments. I'd also like to note that the political tone of this game is completely different from 80 days, which is really great for the setting. Hearing pirates moan about the evils of ethnocentrism and imperialistic western attitudes would have really taken me out of it. Not to say that I disliked 80 days, but it's good to see the inkle is more focused on good game design than politics. I figure they just do their best to adapt a good game from their source material,(which in 80 days case was a commissioned script-you will never convince me that that rebel leader Aouda was a real adaptation of Verne, no matter how impressive the game may have been) which is both refreshing, and as it should be..Version: 1.0

βœ“ Updated classicThis feels like a classic choose-your-own-adventure book updated for iPad. Which is exactly what it is. All the reading & decisions without the fiddly bits. I don’t recall seeing any of the illustrations shown on the Twitter feed, which would have helped the atmosphere a bit..Version: 1.0

βœ“ Piratey goodnessIt’s so rare to find a genuinely good pirate gamebook. This is definitely one of them..Version: 1.0

βœ“ Pirating in the CaribbeanReleased originally in the 90s heyday of gamebooks, this pirate-themed choose your own adventure is as fun as ever as an iPhone app. Down Among the Dead Men is a lot less flashy than other recent Inkle releases, just being text and choices, but the story is entertaining and the interface is so simple to use that you can just sit back and enjoy your adventure. The adventure itself involves escaping from forced service on the galleon of the worst pirate in the Caribbean and then foiling his plan to kidnap good Queen Bessie. You can journey across the open sea or hop from desert island to desert island and meet a huge menagerie of creatures-vampires, ghosts, witches and giant crabs- before trying to find a ship in the dangerous ports full of rogues. The app has several options to enable replayability: you can choose male or female and from six character types for each, plus there are three difficulty levels. The advantage of being in a dynamic writing engine is taken advantage of, with each gender and character having a few extra subplots added which were not possible in the original text. Otherwise, this is faithful to the book, but with the added difficulty levels to mitigate the unforgiving nature of the original. If you choose to live in a forgiving world you can always find some extraordinary way out of any scrape, while if you live in a cruel world you may find your adventure finishing early. This is a good type of app for the iPhone and I wish there were more like it. Inkle have developed more flashy and less text driven games since this and, while really fun, those offer a different kind of experience to this. Sadly, this style does not seem to be commercially viable, but I recommend it to anyone who remembers and enjoyed the old style gamebooks..Version: 1.0

βœ“ Game book ahoy! This is much more of a pure game book than other offerings from Inkle and that suits me fine. The prose is very evocative of the swashbuckling setting and the rhythm of the choices keeps you really engaged. While some of these choices are probably more for colour than genuine branches in the narrative, there's enough to keep you on your toes... I'm enjoying the second section which sees you trying to stave off mutiny on board a small rowing board! Recommended - especially at the price - would love to see more like this!.Version: 1.0

βœ“ Short, but satisfyingYou can't go wrong getting this game for 99Β’, but it was just a little short for my taste. Overall, though, the story is quite nice and the plot engaging..Version: 1.0

βœ“ Pretty goodVery fun if you enjoy a good read.Version: 1.0

βœ“ Classic Pirate Adventure!Down Among The Dead Men has all the adventure and mystery of classic pirate stories presented in atmospheric writing. The elegant presentation of options keeps the story flowing quickly, and the division into short chapters makes it easy to go back and explore alternate paths or recover from a deadly mistake. The choice of characters like Swashbuckler or Warlock allow for personalisation and replay ability, and three difficulty levels means it suits the most determined or casual player..Version: 1.0

βœ“ Good GamebookIf you like these kind of choose your own adventure type games you'll like this one. It's well written and a good read. Just enough choices to feel like you have some raw control over the story. All in all it's a good but for 99 cents..Version: 1.0

βœ“ Great fun for a lazy dayI really enjoyed Down Among the Dead Men. It was just the right length for a cold, lazy Sunday afternoon. The writing is brisk, the world is interesting, the characters are enjoyable and the interface is fantastic. For .99 there are worse ways you could spend your day!.Version: 1.0

βœ“ Inkle does it again!Amazing, not sure how they can be so consistently good really! No it's time to concentrate on Sorcery 3 guys!!.Version: 1.0

βœ“ Fresh take on Interactive FictionGreat presentation, easy to read the story, yet also feel like choices are being made. Clean interface, looking for more from these guys!.Version: 1.0

βœ“ Good little gameI wouldn't say it was impressive, but it was a fun little diversion. Couple of things I noticed on one play through they might want to fix: the author strays from second person from time to time, saying "I" instead of "you." Also, when I bought an animal (I think it was a weasel?) at the shop, there was no page- it was just blank. Overall, not earth shattering but worth the buck..Version: 1.0

βœ“ Entertaining little choose your own adventure for the priceMore simple "choose your own adventure" than true "game book" it's a bit of fun for the price. The setting is fresh for the genre with lots of fun pop pirate tropes. The story is short and seems pretty linear after my single play through. The writing is good and makes it fun..Version: 1.0

βœ“ Yarr Matey!Such a fun read! And so many new stories yet to explore!.Version: 1.0

βœ“ Very well doneGreat writing, and a simpler, more absorbing structure than 80 Days and Sorcery..Version: 1.0
