Brilliant: Learn interactively for Negative User Reviews

Bah...Must pay beyond the first trial section. Bullshloppa.Version: 3.4.3

A good startI hope the number of courses expands rapidly, otherwise my year's subscription will have been a lot of money for a limited offer of courses. App works well on iOS and web. Courses are okay, not stellar..Version: 3.6.4

Tricks you into reviewsEducational, but expensive and tricks you into writing reviews, ahem..Version: 3.3.1

50/50Fun, educational Limited, expensive for premium.Version: 2.1.5

Bravo to brilliant’s self-serving UX and bad customer supportUpdate: I received the refund. Thanks! I wish the process would be much easier. Modifying the rating from one to three. Original: I signed up for a monthly subscription since there is only a few courses I’m interested in. After I finished the course, I set a schedule to cancel the subscription before it renewed. I thought I canceled it because it asked me why I canceled and I selected my reason. I thought that’s it. To my surprise, they charged again. I went in and realized that the subscription is not cancelled because they hide the cancellation button at the very bottom of the page after you selected the reason so I didn’t successfully cancel it Lol. Well, I get it — you want to retain your user. But if a user does not want to use your product anymore, what’s the point of making the cancelation process so difficult. It felt like I was tricked. And customer support refused to refund due to internal policy even though I wasn’t using it at all - check your statistics please. So for those of you who only find a few courses interesting, make sure when you cancel, scroll to the bottom of every single page. Otherwise, they will say it’s users fault..Version: 3.2.1

Misleading, GarbageThis app claims that you can "learn" and "grow," yet all of the lessons require you to have extensive prior knowledge of the topics. The explanations are also really horrible, so it actually never teaches you anything..Version: 3.3.1

Fallacies Discovered in First Two MinutesApp claimed the International Space Station (ISS) is ‘weightless.’ This is a slightly erroneous term but usually a forgivable mistake, if uttered by a layperson. However, as this is an educational app, I believe it should be held to higher standards and user proper rhetoric. Honestly, I am greatly disappointed because I was excited to learn some new trivia! It is a great injustice that this app is propagating slightly skewed information. I would find it a better exercise to fully explain the idea rather than hastily throw out a common misnomer, which even further normalizes this incorrect sentiment. Knowing that people who are not already well-verses in physics would probably not recognize this mistake makes it an even more egregious error! I am fed up with the educational system opting out of truly explaining difficult subjects. There is this trend of substituting them with slightly incorrect, water-downed, and much easier to explain versions of the true problem statement. The responsibility should lie within the institution to face this challenges comprehensively, so that we can build a model for the general public that cohesively explains such difficult subject matter..Version: 3.3.1

Apsolutely BrilliantI wish they would update the community area to make things more user friendly. I love the courses particularly on logic and algebra but always want more practice questions to use my brain more. I really wish there was a clean and simple way to do this especially for paid users, without going to the daunting, confusing and uninspiring community questions area..Version: 5.1.1

Expensive subscription feesLong gone are the days when what you purchase is actually yours, The monthly fees you're asking for are already half of what I pay for my cell phone plan. Yes, we know about your website and your weekly free exercises. But that doesn't address the amount you're asking for here does it?.Version: 3.0.4

Great butThis app is great, only problem is high subscription fees, but usually a sale comes around once a year, so that’s nice. The biggest problem though is the sound effects. I like to listen to music while i use this app, and the stupid sound effects keep pausing it. Sometimes i can glitch it so i can listen to music at the same time, but that’s only happened twice. This has severely cut down my usage of the app. Please add in a mute button.Version: 6.4.4

Fun App, not perfect, too expensive.First of all I love the idea. I studied Mechanical Engineering but haven’t worked in the field for 5+ years, so I just wanted to see if I still have the understanding for all the principles and check out new fields. I feel like some of the explanations should have been read over by somebody else who hasn’t written it. Most of the time I don’t have issues understanding the principle or I even know it beforehand but reading the text is sometimes more confusing than clarifying. Still, I’m enjoying the app. Lastly I have to say that $150 per year seems really excessive for an app like this. It is not going into enough detail to prepare people for exams or anything, so all it’s for is joy/ interest in the theories. I can get that from Wikipedia or similar websites. Granted, not as organized but for free. I will keep browsing topics this year but I will not buy another year of subscription. At least not for this prize..Version: 4.1.2

Beware auto renewal!Whilst I found the app useful I was incredibly disappointed in the sneaky auto subscription & renewal - there was no notification from brilliant when it was setup, and nothing prior to the renewal date. They incentivise the annual payment, then bang, you’ve paid for another year with no notice - if it wasn’t for the PayPal notice of payment I’d be none the wiser without checking my statements. The cancelation process (in app) is also very long winded and designed to mislead, with very long scroll to get to the buttons, and the buttons you actually need to press are greyed out/look inactive. There is also no refund on cancellation, your ‘subscription’ has to run its term. For me, all the above points to a questionable business ethics - as they are seem actively trying to prevent customers from making informed financial decisions..Version: 4.2.1

I like itGood way to initiate with Physics.Version: 2.1.9

Love The App, but Images Not Showing UpI’ve loved this app for years, and I bought premium for a month so I could do some of the full courses since so many of them seem interesting to me. But when I use the mobile version, none of the images load. Most of the quiz questions depend on some graph or picture, but since I can’t see them I usually just have to guess the answer. It’s really annoying. These images do show up on my laptop but I always do Brilliant lessons on my phone as a “I have 10 minutes free right now” type of thing. I don’t want to have to use my laptop every time I want to do a lesson. Please fix this ASAP. My premium month is almost up and this has made the experience significantly less convenient..Version: 6.3.2

Frustrating as an aid to study- not great valueI downloaded this to help with applied statistics for psychology- wanting to learn about linear regression, ANOVA etc. I would say that what’s available on here is less useful than what’s available for free on the internet. If you’re using this as a bit of a brain teaser, or something that’s more fulfilling than scrolling social media, then fine. However, I’d say if you’re studying (statistics at least) this will only be marginally helpful - which, for the price, you might expect more. It tends to be quite maths and equations heavy, rather than running though applied examples of how to read and understand output data. It’s also hard to navigate to specific courses. If you’re studying and want a hand getting your head around stuff, stick with Kahn academy - you’ll probably learn a whole lot more, and for free..Version: 6.3.2

Need more beginner stepsI like this app but there is no step from a true beginner to the stuff on this app. For people who need more explanation or examples it would be helpful or else it’s kind of discouraging. Like khan academy videos that explain well visually. Maybe adding a test for the start of each topic to determine what level the user is at would be good so more advanced people don’t get bored, but people who are beginners aren’t overwhelmed..Version: 6.4.4

Tired of apps with terrible font choiceBefore I could even get started, the words were either so big or too small. My iOS text choice didn't apply, for some reason. Half sentences here and there, I can't even scroll to see the rest, how could I make choices at the setting up stage if I don't know what they are for? Not only those with great eyesight like maths and science..Version: 5.1.0

Helpful but seriously limitedFor most of my incorrect answers I try to learn and understand what I did wrong. For some parts the explanations are helpful but wording is so skewed that’s it’s a problem to understand without taking time longer than the initial question. Then I found a lot of questions are open ended or hides important information that makes solving the question a logical guessing game. Example pertaining to a probability question “guess how much money would be made on average per game” the question however does not tell you how many games will be played leading the player to come with an random guess which will lead them to a wrong answer. If the app is built for the purpose of learning or a wide range of learning levels the questions and explanations should reflect that. Instead of assuming everyone intelligence level will pick on the smallest details and understand what they already didn’t understand to begin with..Version: 5.0.2

A «Pay 2 Learn »The title is explicit. All the courses require payment.Version: 3.2.1

Pathetic excuse for an appI downloaded this, only for it to stay loading for hours. My storage is mid, I have good wifi, restarted EVERYTHING. So clearly this is a app issue. Heavily disappointed and dissatisfied..Version: 6.3.1

Needs moreThe courses and content in premium are good but the process for learning is not always clear and can get really confusing. I found it often has quantum leaps where I lost track. Should be backed up with video tutorials to consolidate learning as well as spaced repetition. This would better accommodate visual and auditory learners..Version: 6.4.6

Buggy and basicI expected more content from this app, but event ignoring this, I just can’t use the app! It throws blank windows all the time, can’t load itself even on restarting the app! If I can get it working, one switch to another app and it’s useless again! I would understand the later since I have background processing off, but why wouldn’t it work in foreground? Oh, and if i skipped some chapters of a course, using the button “Continue course” won’t give me the later chapters, but the ones I skipped! And no URLs can’t be opened in the modal windows with wifi on - why is that?...Version: 4.2.1

Great Content - Horrible NavigationI’m really enjoying the interactive “twiddle with the knobs to see how it works” style of learning. There’s definitely a load of great content here. But…I’m finding navigating the courses infuriating. I can’t find a complete, clear list of all courses, chapters and lessons and where they sit in the “learning paths”. It seems you have to blindly drill down into the courses to see exactly what they contain. There also seems to be no simple way of viewing a list of completed lessons and (very importantly) a way to quickly hop back to a previously completed part of lesson to refresh your memory. I really feel like I’m having to fight with the app to get what I want from it. Perhaps I’m missing something?.Version: 7.0.2

10/10 app! 2/10 marketing/business strategyYour program is phenomenal; I mean it. Your approach to business seems a tad counterproductive though. Perhaps add a WAY cheaper alternative to your subscription for middle, high school, and college students seeing as they require it the most. Adults can afford the extra buck and aggregate an offer/compensate by giving unique job/internship/opportunities/coupons. Consider partnering with Khan Academy or take notes from how they were able to “rise to academic stardom.” Understand that this’d be an investment as your acquiring a large net of customers in say five-ish years then when you have a solid customer base jack the prices while adding resource(s) and opportunities to recompénsate. You have the framework for something beautiful. Take it by the horns and see where it goes! If your at all interested in any of the aforementioned ideas implement them and consider hiring me as an intern ( I need the job exp). Much love, luck and good vibes!! - ET.Version: 6.5.0

Still has the same massive bug after literally years plus new huge bugs!Still, the daily page does not update correctly. It used to be the case that the only way to get it to update was to kill the app and restart it but now it updates after you switch away from the “today” tab or open a daily puzzle. So they improved it but didn’t fix it. A competent engineer could fix this in an hour. It is not confidence-inspiring at all when every time I go to the app the front page is out of date. UPDATE: The devs have introduced a new bug which prevents me seeing an explanation for the daily puzzle. After a second of showing the explanation the screen flips back to the list of courses. Amazing software engineering skills. Final update: Now it’s hard to even find the daily puzzles. What are the devs doing?! Unsubscribing..Version: 6.5.7

Oh really?Question of the week regarding the SUV of toilets. The authors might like to reconsider their answer to this ASAP if they wish to retain any credibility. (Hint - Flush power and volume is dependant on the amount and height of water descending from the CISTERN not the volume of the bowl. The bowl illustrated could not even fill above the level in the “U” bend unless there was a already a blockage followed by multiple flushes, in which case the force of each flush would be absorbed by the existing body of water and have even less impact on the blockage.).Version: 2.1.9

Doesn’t workIt says nothing works offline which I would understand but I’m not offline, I’m at my home with full wifi and internet..Version: 3.4.3

Rip-offFirst off, this app doesn’t actually teach you, it’s a series of gotcha questions that may be beneficial if you already have knowledge of the subjects and just want a review, but there are no lessons, this is a prime example of a minimum viable product with an expensive subscription. Now, after barely using the app due to dissatisfaction with the “learning” possibilities, I’m slapped with $100 charge for another year right as the holidays are coming up, and I don’t have an extra $100 lying around to spend on myself. There was no warning that my subscription renewal was coming, or how much it was going to be. (I bought the first year on a sale for $60 last year) As far as I know, there is no way of getting that back. When I cancelled the subscription in the app, I had to endure 5 huge screens of scrolling where the company either pathetically begged me to stay, or threatened me with a higher price if I ever dared come back. They must not get many people coming back if they treat them with this vindictive manner on the way out the door. After that, I’m not motivated to go to their customer support and try to get my money back, because the one thing they have taught me is that I won’t get anywhere with that..Version: 4.2.1

Great Content / Poor Quality AppThe courses are great, but the app is by far the buggiest app on my phone. Given the price of the subscription I would expect more attention to quality..Version: 6.5.1

Nice app, don’t like the in app subscription infoI have just started using Brilliant under the trial service. I find there is no information stating when my trial started, when it ends, whether it will auto renew, what will be taken from my account. This is basic stuff and really these subscriptions for apps should have constraints pushed from Apple to developers to make subscription details available within the app whether under a Trial or paid subscription. There is very little clear information about what is the current status of my subscription. This we know is always done on purpose. Considering this is a learning tool app, I find this lack of clarity disappointing. The developers know better and should implement better..Version: 6.5.3

Just started today so far so goodI’ve just started trying Brilliant today so I will be giving 60% as I have not fully explored it. But I’m writing this review because I’d like to ask if it’s possible to allow us to bookmark/save a completed problems of the week as I would like to go back to certain problems and learn more deeply about the concepts/topics (i.e. Center of Mass) in the problems. Thank you for considering my suggestion, will submit an actual review once I used the app more..Version: 2.1.9

Hard time to delete my account and Personal InformationDownloaded the App. Found out that it is only a trial. Now I’m trying to delete my account and to retrieve my personal informations but it doesn’t let me. Information about cookies can’t be closed- it just stays open and blocks the screen. While clicking on “Got It” and the X nothing happens. It might be a good app for few however I’m putt off because of the hoha mentioned above..Version: 5.1.1

Poorly explained Calculus lessonsWas going through the calculus lesson and it was not only difficult to follow and hardly explained, but the text often jumped around in terms of subject from one page to the next and there was very little if any cohesive flow of clear thought. I had high hopes for this app. Deleted..Version: 3.1.9

Not effectiveIf you want to learn math, then this app is not going to help much. However, if you just want to exercise some things that you already know or vaguely remember, then it’s fine practice..Version: 6.5.3

Decent but overpricedSo you are either forcing me to pay 120$ for a year or 24$ for a month? This pricing doesn’t make sense at all..Version: 2.1.9

Very US-centric questionsI’ve only used the demo/free quizzes but there’s no option to choose metric measurements in settings anywhere. Meaning any question requiring a volume calculation requires me to know feet/inches/gallons and in some instances convert those sizes to equivalent US state sizes. We don’t learn US geography at school in Australia so I’m just guessing on those questions! Maybe settings can be adjusted in the paid version but at $25 a month I’m not inclined to find out!.Version: 2.1.9

Good and fun but way to expensiveI loved the introduction part of this app. It kind of shows you what you are in for and how it works. Seems like a great app. And then it tell you that you need to pay 120$/year or 29.99$/month for this. Wayyyyy to expensive for an app like this..Version: 3.4.1

Progress disappears over timeI have been progressing several courses on a regular basis, and then had to skip for some time ( a couple of weeks or so). When I came back, even though the top view showed the progress bars correctly, when I would click into the course all the sub courses were pristine, and I would need to figure out where exactly I stopped last time. That happened a couple of times already and the most frustrating thing is that even though I have a paid subscription, I submitted a bunch of bug requests regarding this problem and never heard back from them. I do enjoy the app, but the customer service is terrible and some small bugs make the experience bad, which does deter me from using the app and making me questioning whether I even want to continue using ( and paying for) it..Version: 6.3.2

Great app howeverGreat information however nothing really fits my interests and much of the stuff that does costs money. I would suggest that everyone should watch kurzgesagt in a nutshell which is produced in partnership with brilliant..Version: 3.3.1

Bring back downloadsRemoving the download feature has been a major detriment to my learning and I’m going to have to cancel my subscription because I can’t use brilliant as much anymore.Version: 6.5.1

Nice concept, but lacks accessibility…Great app and concept, but I have a learning disability and it would be helpful if it would read the text to you, or be presented as a video. I feel this greatly reduces the accessibility for those that have different ways of learning information..Version: 5.0.5

Neglected and stale1) There hasn’t been any meaningful attempt at adding new content in years. Moreover, many “courses” share the exact same material. Brilliant has a problem with the amount of content they offer. 2) They’ve done away with the open discussion solution forum; all you get is the (often stupid) Brilliant staff solution. 3) The daily challenges, besides being broken (yet another bug to fix), cycle through the same boring repetitions of like ten different types of questions. Again, the app needs new content. 4) Much of the content is really poorly presented. Technical terms are introduced without ever defining them, questions are convoluted, etc. Calling them “courses” adds artificial legitimacy to what are actually just a bunch of multiple choice questions/problems accompanied by tacky, ClipArt-esque illustrations. Fix this crap. And stop charging people who’ve already paid until you get actual new content (not just ‘new courses’ comprised of a mish-mash of content borrowed from old courses)..Version: 6.2.7

Overpriced and no way to cancel after trial…I emailed in about how I couldn’t cancel my account because the subscription area of the account settings doesn’t work several days before it ended. No response and now they’ve taken out payment for a whole years subscription with no response. The same information can be found elsewhere at no cost..Version: 6.3.2

Great app butGreat app, love the design and teaching style. Totally nails it in terms of content. But the app seems to be slow and unresponsive when using the account menu settings. The annual payment is a deal breaker for me & I can’t even delete my payment card, which maybe an error..Version: 6.4.1

Good content, quite buggyThe courses are interesting and pretty well designed – some of the more advanced math courses perhaps ramp up a bit quickly, but I guess it’s good to be challenged. The app itself is not good. Like other users, I’ve always had to kill and restart it every time to get the daily challenge thing to show up, and like other users I have this new bug where it can’t show the explanations (which are now crowsdsourced (from some other version of the app?), and of variable quality). In general there seem to be a lot of rough edges of this type..Version: 6.3.1

Worthless, zero stars. Don’t waste your money.Don’t believe all the fake reviews. Regretted spending money on this instantly. Do you want to pay a stupid amount monthly to do repetitive, hollow high school quizzes? Then waste your money on this. The only thing you’ll learn is how big of a sucker you are for slick, misleading advertising..Version: 3.3.4

Bugs, hard to read tiny fonts, unhelpful support. If you are heading into your mid-forties and starting to notice your eyesight fading, then you will find this app extremely annoying to use. For some unknown reason, problems are presented using a an unnecessarily tiny font. With so much unused screen space available — this seems like an ill-informed design choice. The app does a very poor job of recording your progress. You may finish a problem, but then later on the game will mark it as incomplete. If you go back to try and complete it again, then it marks other completed problems as incomplete. Super frustrating. I wrote to support and asked that if they can’t fix it, then I want a refund. Without even offering to fix my issue, or even ask more questions about it, they just said that they are “happy to offer a refund”... but they won’t because I purchased from the App Store. So, they don’t care about fixing bugs, they don’t care if I stay or go, and they won’t try to fix or offer anything in return. I held out for ages before pulling the trigger and finally getting Brilliant. Now I regret my choice..Version: 4.1.1

Math and physical and computer scienceThat should be the real tag line, "Math and physical and computer science only" because apparently the developer either knew nothing about biological and chemical science or they didn't have any friends to help them with this part of the app. There is no mention of chemistry, organic chemistry (which I argue is harder than many of the courses in there now), molecular biology, or any of the myriad of advanced or beginner subject that may fall under those broad headings. I downloaded the app hoping to use it for some study help worth some masters courses in molecular biology but, nope...computational biology is as close as it gets and that is really just a programmer course for people that can speak Python or some other language. If they can get some of these subjects added I will definitely be back, I like the look and feel of the app. So, good luck and let's hop to boys, let's get those subjects added and the future biochemist learning!!.Version: 3.4.3

Rushed to marketMany of the explanations for their problems are incomplete, and are clearly rushed through (and checked over) by people who already have a thorough understanding of the subject. This leaves the hopeful learner often stuck- wondering how to get from a->b. It’s discouraging, because the app is a great idea overall and it does eventually work. With the help of intense googling the explanations make sense in the end. However, because of this- it’s just not a finished product yet. It shouldn’t be on the market, at least for paying customers, when so much must be supplemented elsewhere due to a lack of due diligence on the part of the devs. The devs should focus more on testing their product to make sure it’s able to teach people and less on advertising all over the universe. Good products sell themselves. This is not yet a good product and they clearly lean into over advertising to compensate..Version: 3.5.11

Love This App, But Proce is UntenableThis app has logic problems, courses on computer science, AI, etc. that are all broken down into simple, intuitive, bite sized lessons and quizzes. I enjoy continuing to learn, especially in small, manageable ways, and the content here is right up my alley. In short, I think I am THE target audience for this app. The problem is that I will never, EVER pay $150 for an app in one lump sum, especially not as an annual auto-renewing subscription. I could lose interest, or the app could stop being updated and supported because they couldn’t find enough people to pay $150 for it. I would gladly pay $12/mo. for this app, which comes to $144 annually, but a $150 lump sum for an app? It’s just not going to happen. Developers, please add some ads or a monthly subscription option or some other payment mechanism than a $150 lump sum. I truly will miss this app after the free trial ends..Version: 4.1.1

Good app, room for improvement- spaced repetition would make learning much more efficient. For example, Codecademy has a daily practice option where multiple choice question are shown on the things you’ve learned. Brilliant could accomplish something similar by resurfacing problems that were attempted in the past. - changing the time zone for the notifications doesn’t work, the app exists the page for changing the time zone few seconds after opening it. - accessing old daily problems that were not attempted should be easier. Right now you have to go the archive, scroll down and check each problem to see if you’ve done..Version: 6.3.1
