Guitar Lessons - Guitar Tricks for Negative User Reviews

Beginner Lessons to be freeLooking for a free guitar lessons sorry.Version: 1.7

Not worth the timeFree download, but only two things are actually free and aren’t chords, is just how to hold a guitar. Videos are choppy and poor quality at best. Needs a lot of improvement..Version: 1.3.12

Have to pay to learnI don’t like it because you have to pay and I am only a kid.Version: 1.5

OkThe app is pretty good itself but most of the songs require some special equipment. Recommended for beginners, and songs are pretty good, just some minor details missing.Version: 1.7

It’s good but not greatThe lessons are terrific, but the app needs improvement. It doesn’t track your progress and can be difficult to find where your next progression of lessons are once you’ve completed a set of lessons, as it doesn’t mark the lessons you’ve completed. Also if I view a lesson in full screen, when I pause or let it run to the end, it freezes and the close button disappears, forcing me to close the app, reopen and then find the lesson again. Frustrating to say the least, but the content is great..Version: 2.1.56

I’m a beginnerThere is no doubt the content I encountered so far and the teachers are great. I enjoy the lessons and practices and try to use the app on the iPad everyday. I even dropped fender play because guitar tricks is so much better. But, the user interface and experience on iPad is lacking. 1. It’s really important for me to keep track of where I was and my progress as well as history of usage. While this is available on desktop and web, it’s not on mobile. The need to keep going back and forth from app to website to look at progress and history so I can jump back to a section or continue where I was is the reason I only gave 3 stars. I prefer to use the iPad for everything and I’m sure the future is in mobile, so please make the UX friendlier and easier..Version: 1.3.9

Great learning material, terrible appHow do get back to video that is playing if i navigate to the home page and can still hear it playing in the background.? I’m on the last lesson in a section. How do i skip ahead? Where am i in my course? Nothing is numbered. The website UI is really awesome. And this app still has a long way to go. I get lost in it..Version: 1.3.11

If you can’t stand being marketed to, skip thisI actually paid for this twice. My problem is that when I pay for a service, I don’t want that service aggressively marketing to me-constantly spamming my email. I like this app. I like the service. But regardless of my clicking the button that says “DON’T send me email notifications”, they just ignore your wishes and treat you like someone they’re not already collecting money from. I can’t express how much I hate being marketed to. Equally as much, I hate a device that ignores your wishes and spams you like crazy. Literally. Sign up and you’ll see. 😕.Version: 1.7

BewareThis app is just bait to get you to subscribe. You can't get past the first base unless you give them $129 joinging fee. I can't believe Apple allows this sort of conduct. The other review here is obviously by a staff member who does not have to spend the money on subscription..Version: 1.0.0

GuitarTricksWaste of money.Version: 1.7

Looks prettyMy biggest gripe is that the app doesn’t track your progress or recognise what lessons you have completed. A simple tick or completed 3 of 7 would help me So it takes me time each day to backtrack to find out where I was up to. So far I think the lessons are good and easy to follow along with. The app is also laid out good..Version: 1.7

SorryI could not find an option how to contact a developer for this app. Please cancel the charges i have not used your app. Thanks.Version: 1.3.12

Useless AppNot able to log into b via app. I use a password manager which inputs my credentials... works w/ website however in the app it is saying “you have entered incorrect login details”. Inconsistencies between web and app password requirements or passwords lengths?.Version: 1.7

Learning song section can be very frustrating to useSome instructors spend too much time talking about theory and other things mixed right in with the middle of the song instruction, irrelevant to actually learning the song, and then fly way to rapidly though the chords, progressions and riffs, making learning difficult and multiple rewinds and replays necessary. (Example; Behind Blue Eyes by Mark Olesky. ) There is no way to mark or loop song sub-sections, so it is hunt and guess tryin to find the section you want to repeat without wasting time listening to the irrelevant taking and or parts you already know again and again . The theory may be interesting , but should come in separate sections, NOT in the middle of trying to learn to play a part of the song. Songs should be broken down into smaller sections for learning , or have ability to mark and loop sub-sections so you can repeat as needed. On the plus side, transcriptions and techniques are generally good, except for songs with multiple guitars in the original . “Just play guitar 1” is a cop out. There are usually very good ways of combining multiple parts for solo..Version: 1.3.11

HollidayI travel US, Canada and MX and it is great to be able to take my lessons wherever Internet is available and on my own schedule. The instructor I choose is fantastic. I would recommend this program to all levels of guitarists..Version: 1.3.13

Good app but navigation is a killerThis is a great app and a good way to put the series together, there are however two significant problems and they are: Navigation, there is no way to see where you left off, there is a “last lesson” button but this is useless when you are at the end of a section as you still have to go back to the main menu where you are presented with the long list again. Printing, there is mention of printing but there is no way to print without going to the web site (leave the app). However, printing would not be needed at all if the tab was to scroll with the song. So my recommendations would be to have something in the lesson list to tick what you have complete and highlight your last lesson. Add music sheet scrolling in the songs to remove the need to print..Version: 1.7

ClutteredI still feel that the App is too cluttered and difficult to follow. Also I feel that the guitarists doing the lessons need to slow down. They appear to rush things which is not good for someone who is learning the guitar.Version: 2.1.56

No song without upgradingWant free songs.Version: 1.6

Solid, not greatThe app has an issue on the phone (iPhone 15 Pro Max) where if you touch the screen in fullscreen horizontal mode (widescreen), the app will return to vertical mode. I don't think this is the intended design, so maybe it’s a bug. Perhaps it is meant to be a swipe so you can quickly exit full screen, but it’s too sensitive if so. This is frustrating when trying to rewind because you must return to widescreen mode. Another issue is when doing a chord switch when trying to play along the chord switch is sometimes not notated until the new line of notation comes up, so it’s easy to mess up because you don't see it coming. You either need to memorize the chords/notes or bring the notation up, which is too small to read on a phone with the video also playing. You could also print off the notation, but this is a hassle for shorter videos. I have used primarily blues and classical lessons. The blues lessons are very well done, and the teacher makes me believe he knows what he is doing. The classical teacher is fine, but his play is either sloppy, the guitar is out of tune, or the recording quality isn't good. I can't figure out which it is. However, he teaches the notes and techniques well overall..Version: 2.1.62

1 star1 star because it would not let me play a song so please fix this.Version: 2.1.4

Broken.Guitar Tricks as training is great. The video playback through this app isn't- it's broken about 50% of the time..Version: 1.2.1

Nothing valuable for free for testing whether is it god or notI tried to an exercise to see whether the app worth to buy, and the only lesson-video free was just boring things the I could pick anywhere on YouTube, nothing really useful to start play guitar for real.Version: 1.7

Money making AppOnly download this app if your willing to purchase most of the content. The saying goes “nothing is free” which is an accurate statement for this app..Version: 1.3.9

Needs searchPretty good but desperately needs a search function to find specific songs..Version: 1.3.13

PenisHate it.Version: 2.1.58

It’s making me pay😭Plz creators please don’t make it charge money plz plz plz.Version: 1.3.13

FastIt was to fast for me to learn from.Version: 1.7

Very limitate list of songs.I give a 3 because the foundation series are great, some diserve a 10 on a scale of 5, really. But I was drown back for another year because in an email they were saying they had so much new videos, well not so much..Version: 1.3.4

Guitar Tricks AppApp was working fine then the newest update does not work on my devices. Sucks.Version: 2.1

Edit out fluffI think the app is good from a learning perspective. I think there is opportunity to spend less time with reminding users at the beginning of every video that it is guitar tricks. I think the videos could be edited down to half the time so that students could spend more time playing and less time listening and waiting. Overall I think the instructors do a great job explaining and I save time by not having to drive to a lesson, plus I can take a lesson any time that is convenient for me..Version: 1.3.13

Progress and lessonsWhere is my progress and next lesson? System is not intuitive.Version: 2.1.62

Update NeededThe interface is a little old (so are the videos) and somewhat confusing. 1) It would be way easier to have all lessons listed for a given category with tabs that open right there to show individual videos within each lesson. 2) There’s no kind of marker to see what videos you’ve completed or where you left off. 3) Every time you go full screen in a video, you’re forced to exit full screen just to hit next again and re-enter full screen. No auto play feature or “next” button there on screen. 4) Why do you need a “begin” page right after you click a lesson. It just feels like I’m going down level after level and it’s so complicated for no reason..Version: 1.7

Greg content, app needs workThe videos are amazing, I’ve learned so much so quickly I can’t complain at all in terms of content. The app however could be greatly improved. It should make accessing the content easier but I would almost say you’re better off using the website because then at least when you close it you won’t have to filter through all the choices again just to get to the song you were working on. There needs to be a search function to find songs it’s crazy that there isn’t. Also the app should have a function to let you book mark or save songs you’re working on. Having to scroll to the bottom of the songs list every time I open the app to find the one I’m trying to learn is a bit frustrating. Would be handy also if the app could show your progress through lessons like the website does..Version: 1.4.0

Good program, annoying membership cancellationI watched a bunch of the videos and found the program to be very helpful but found it not to be worth the cost for me. What I found frustrating was first the free trial sign up. I like apps that allow a sign up through the apple store because cancellation is simple as subscriptions can all be found in one place. Guitar tricks doesn’t allow that. Maybe they have their reasons but when i eventually went to cancel on their website they made it difficult. When you go to cancel, you need to select 1 of 4 options of why you want to cancel but only one option actually leads you to cancellation. Then you still have to read the small print (not in the pull down menu) that says “there’s nothing you can do”. These steps to make a cancellation are a bad practice. Clearly if someone is truly cancelling they probably don’t care about your final opinion so they make it this difficult to try and keep you signed up..Version: 1.7

Pay to playGood variety of songs but you have to pay to play.Version: 1.3.13

Dont bother!Have to pay for everything; Scam.Version: 1.3.3

Don't get sucked inYes it's free, but only the first lesson which is kinda redundant. Then it's $279 for a year from the second lesson onwards..Version: 1.3.7

Problem since last updateApp will open up but when I try to open up tabs on app, the app kicks me out...Version: 2.1.1

Holy Emails Batman!!!Can’t believe the amount of useless emails I got for the first two days after signing up for this app!!!! I get it you want to up sell everyone to buy the lessons but give people a chance to just go through the free demos before bombarding them!!.Version: 1.7

Grey Screen On Videos after Screen LockHi I’m a member and love the content however when watch a video if the screen locks on iPhone once you go back in the the screen is grey and the video will not play unless you go out and back in to the app. As you are often practicing something this can happen on a regular basis. If this can be updated that would be really good..Version: 2.0

One massive glaring omissionThe app is ok, I chose this over Fender Play but not sure that was the right decision. The authentication is different between the website and the app, so if you register on the website with google or Facebook, you can’t login to the app the same way. The biggest issue however is once in the app, there is no easy way to track your progress - so when you go back to the app your have to delve around in history to find out what you have done - and to add additional confusion, the lessons in the history are named individually, but in the progress section you have to choose a lesson group, so have to guess which lesson group your last individual lesson was in. The website version has progress bars on the lessons, this is all that is needed, but for the app to be missing these it makes it clunky just to do something basic like pick up where you left off, seems like a really basic omission for what should be a learning application..Version: 1.6

Great content but poor appIt’s a shame this app with excellent content is almost unusable. The app’s buttons (back button etc) when in a lesson frequently become unresponsive . The video control buttons disappear randomly. And there is no way to play the videos in landscape mode, which is basic stuff! I am using iPhone 6 with latest iOS. All in all the app quality does grave injustice to the awesome content. At the minimum, the unresponsive buttons, disappearing video controls (pause, forward/rewind, no skip back 10 seconds!) and lack of landscape mode video must be fixed on priority. Eventually the app must rewritten by some quality/experienced app developers and experts in mobile app user interface/experience . The great content in the app deserves better software for presenting it! Had it not been for the awesome content, I would have given it 1 star..Version: 1.3.11

Glitch on subscriptionIm furious when I downloaded the app within 15 minutes I subscribed to the monthly option after a week out of no where it wouldn’t let me access the lesson I was on and it said upgrade membership I go to my account I click restore purchase and nothing changes I try to re subscribe even tho I had already paid once and it wouldn’t allow me Because it stated I already had a membership I deleted the app reinstalled restored my purchases and still the same issue persist I don’t understand how this could even be an issue I’ve never in all my Years of downloading apps and becoming a member to them have had this issue.Version: 2.1.58

I’m just not sureI’m really not sure if I’ll continue to use this app or move to another. I’m a basic guitar okay that’s been okay for a bit but didn’t have any real structure, so I’ve decided to start from scratch. I mainly use the online web browser content to learn from this provider, but I find the navigation on both this app and the website a little cumbersome. For example, on the website I find it better to go full screen, but if you do after each lesson you need to exit from full screen to get to the next, previous, or repeat lesson options. Also, sometimes I want a quick reminder of some chords as to where I am in the journey but you have to open the lesson to get this if you don’t have them written down. Trying to find where you were on the app is different from the web as the app doesn’t break the sections down like the website does, so there’s a lack of consistency. I also believe the app is massively missing things like a guitar tuner, chord diagrams, etc. I’m really not sure it’s worth the price, purely because of the navigation issues and lack of features that many other apps have. The developer should look closely at this as there’s a lot of competition out there and with some very good features. Lastly, I find their sales a bit pushy. One minutes it’s vocal training and then the next an annual subscription for $99 dollars, which is MASSIVELY misleading as I think it’s only for a annual BLUES subscription and not the full package that you pay monthly for. All in all, I’m not sold. Needs a lot more polish for the price!.Version: 1.7

Lessons are fine, App needs work.No fast forward, rewind, or scrubbing through the jam tracks? There isn’t even a simple way to stop and start over from the beginning, you’re forced to listen to the entire track before you can start over? Super frustrating. Screen formatting on iPads seems a bit off in places. Things are cut off on the screen. Come on. Biggest problem. There really needs to be a way of bookmarking where one is in the countless core learning system and song lessons. It’s very easy to forget where you left off and looking in the history is not convenient nor entirely effective. Good new is that there is a ton of great content, bad news is that there doesn’t seem to be a way of organizing it in a way that is useful to the user in the way of favoriting lessons or bookmarking. I seem to be spending a silly amount of time trying to find things I want to easily return to. The low rating is because these seem like app fundamentals to me. Focus seems to be on the website (where all these functions exist), but the app, which I would prefer to use, lags substantially..Version: 1.3.13

💔I want there to be an fake guitar and we play it.Version: 1.7

The app!!!!Looks like a good system to help learn. However I say “look” as that’s about all I can do, as the app is ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE!!! Put on a backing track went back to a another screen. No way to turn off the backing track. It’s very glitchy. No way to landscape video. So my review is about the app use. Shame as would’ve liked to use GT.Version: 1.3.13

Great app, great functionality and look. Lots of room to improve. Please add the toolbox like the main site. Even a metronome..Version: 2.1.62

SCAM!You have to pay to play any song at all! I just want to play music people..Version: 1.3.4

GarbageYou need to pay in order to access the app! Not free, scam!!!.Version: 2.1.56

Be careful! They waste no time in wanting money! Can't tell how helpful it might be with the basic lessons as your only gauge. Very expensive to even try it for a month! Don't waste your money, there are less expensive and more helpful alternatives out there...do a little research before you pay!.Version: 1.3.4

I want to like it but?Good range of styles to cover. Caters for beginners and intermediates. But it realty could do with an update. It constantly crashes and it’s really buggy. Countless times I have had to close the app and then find my crashed lessons..Version: 2.1.52

What I am missingFirst off: This is the Course/subscription you want, if you really want to learn ALL the aspects with regard to playing guitar. However, the song library is severely missing content. There is hardly any Metallica (really!), not much Guns N’Roses etc. Layla from Derek & the Dominoes etc. there are just a ton of iconic classics that you would have to google (and find questionable instructors) On the songs that are there, I would appreciate a visual explanation of the Amp setup instead of just rambling it off. Lastly, I have not found a way to get feedback from instructors. Maybe I am not looking in the right spots, but this would improve the subscription..Version: 2.1.1

App is dreadful but content is goodLike others I'd say whatever video player software they are using needs a massive upgrade, awfully buggy and often unuseable The worst thing for me though is the navigation in the lessons, it's so easy to totally loose track of where you are. I've resorted to taking screenshots of the lesson I was last on to give me a hope of finding it again next week. Looks very very dated, needs an update to keep me using or I'll start looking elsewhere.Version: 1.3.13

Not workingDon't know what's happened but the video lessons won't play on my iPad. Give me an error that the server with the specified host name can't be found. iOS 9.3.5..Version: 1.3.4

You can’t try any lessonsYou have to pay before you can even try the app lessons.Version: 1.3.13

Just cord practiceFar to much jibber jabber, I am an impatient learner just repeat the basic cords which help a wannabe BRUCE.Version: 1.7

Long Time UserSome instructors talk way too much, especially with the advanced Learn How to Play songs. When teaching a phrase, why not play the notes as a slow musical phrase instead of singularly reciting the position or name if each note out of the phrase context? It’s really frustrating. I don’t think advanced players need as much hand holding. Also why can’t I search for a single song (mobile app) without scrolling through the lists? On the bright side, I’ve learned many more difficult songs with you guys than I ever did ruining my old records! Just wish you could get those private lesson costs down for long time users. Keep up the good work, I’m still a paying customer!.Version: 1.3.12

Average app, superb tutorials. The app is pretty basic. Good enough if you want to pickup where you left off on the site and plug your phone into you let amp (or similar). That said, overall GT is an amazing resource and well worth the investment. Tons of videos, clearly organised and supportive tutors/community. I’d argue the best out there..Version: 1.3.9

Not very friendlyThe computer version is way better the app needs to be more user friendly. Still needs work..Version: 1.7

Not great for a complete beginnerI’m a complete beginner. The lessons start well and then progress so quickly. It’s difficult to follow, I can’t see finger placement and the beginners songs are REALLY difficult. Fast and multiple chord changes with complicated strumming patterns. If you can already play I think this will be ok. But not for me..Version: 2.1.58
