Oxford Dictionary for Negative User Reviews

Too expensiveI previously paid for the ad free version. This doesn’t seem to pull to new devices now and doesn’t appear to be covered by family sharing. The only reason I moved to OED in the first place was to hold a copy offline on my devices. There is no way I’m paying £20 a year for a dictionary. I’ve been using this app for 6 years. That be £120 for the occasional word look up. The physical copy of OED cost about £35 and will last a lifetime. Absolutely everything is a subscription now and at some point people will have to start thinning out what they are paying for. Off to look for a new cheap or free option..Version: 12.5

Charging for pronunciation...🤔Great dictionary good app with good features and functions(if you pay). But you lost me by charging a subscription to a dictionary app. Not a one time fee which would be justifiable. On top of that you can’t select the text so that the phone itself can dictate the words. It’s price gouging and it’s has me furious 🤬🤬. For you guys to charge $3 a month or $20 a year for something you can go to google and search up or your phone built in dictionary is ludicrous. I understand we live in a capitalist society, but this type of up charging and micro transactions scamming needs to cease and be written into law to stop this behavior from these tech companies..Version: 12.4

Lousy developer expects double payment after iPad crashOne buys the premium version which is expensive. Old iPad dies, I download from my iCloud account every other paid for application successfully. All work perfectly except for the Oxford dictionary which gives limited functionality and wants me to pay for the Premium version again! Whilst the premium version was very good the stingy MobiSystems people in my opinion are unethical in not allowing a paid customer to re-download from his iCloud account. I will continue to use my full version of the Macquarie dictionary it downloaded to my replacement iPad perfectly with full functionality. The complete Macquarie dictionary is equally as good a reference as the Oxford Dictionary it is actually better for modern and technical English and unlike oxford they don’t expect one to pay for the download twice. Also the word of the day from oxford is often absolutely stupid. It’s randomly computer selected word or phrase would not improve the vocabulary of any thinking person. eg China Sea is a geographical location..Version: 10.0.12

Too many adsNot enough dictionary.Version: 10.0.12

Do not buyThis application, after years of use, started asking me to upgrade for a “best value” of $51. The message keeps popping up when I try to use the pronunciation feature, for which I paid when I bought this version. This give you an idea about the developers’ ethics….Version: 15.2

Riddled by ads and bugsThis app lasted the whole of 10 minutes on my phone. A simple task of looking up a word's meaning was stretched on from mere moments to a couple of minutes because almost every click was interrupted by popup ads with a timed delay so you can’t go back to the app right away. On top of that, the promo page kept popping up without any prompts OR a button to close it without having to close the app. I quickly gave up and tried to get a premium (as was clearly intended by the design of the free version), only for the app to freeze completely. Required a phone reboot. I understand that everyone needs to pay their bills but the quality of the app needs to match what the users are asked to pay. Will have to stick to the web version it seems..Version: 15.8

Great app with one annoyanceThis is probably the most expensive single non-subscription app I have ever bought and it’s worth every penny: the OED available in your hand for less money than the paper version. The word list is complete, the formatting is clear, the words are interlinked so you can follow words and their usage, the “word of the day” stuff is moderately interesting, etc. All very useable and useful for users of British English, and much better than the online dictionaries that tend towards American English and excessive neologisms and acronyms etc. Five star stuff. There is however one extraordinarily annoying part: the app persistently bothers you to review it. Every time you start it up. Every single time. No option to tell it to stop bothering you, not even an option to tell it to stop asking for the next month or two… why? It’s extremely irritating. This would be a five star review but for this tedious begging behaviour. I had thought Apple had requirements around this stuff, but it seems this app ignores them..Version: 15.7

Great but adsI like the word of the day feature, and there also a few other features I’d like to try but don’t feel compelled to because of the short 3 day trial to access the premium plan. The ads are annoying and irrelevant. There are three levels of pricing and they seem confusing because I’m unable to decipher whether they recurring fees or one-time fees. One-time fees would make sense to me in this case; why would I spend $30 or $40 a year on a dictionary that I can pay $30 or $40 for in a single instance for and for a physical copy A longer trial period would be helpful as some of the premium features are not clear and 3 days is not enough time to try it all and make an informed decision as to whether the recurring cost seems fitting..Version: 15.2

Free version limits word searchesDecent app, user-friendly and simple. Don’t mind a few ads but it seems to have a limited amount of searches before it pushes you to go premium if you wish to continue..Version: 12.7

OkayThe definitions are fine but the actual format is very distracting. Useful, but lacking in organization. It gets the job done, but not as well as it could. Also, the fact that you must have premium to hear the pronunciations is frustrating. Instead of adding a button which makes it look like you can hear the pronunciation, don’t put the button in at all, please. A tab coming up advertising “Get More With Premium” is more annoying than not having the sound button at all. If the website/app is harassing me to buy the full version I’m more likely to delete the obnoxious app than to buy their application. Developers, rather, could just place a banner on certain areas of the app which says something to the effect of, “See What Else You Can Get With Premium” or even the original “Get More With Premium” would suffice. Nevertheless, the free app *is* nice..Version: 10.0.12

Nag-ware Nag-ware Nag-ware Nag-ware Nag-wareI have the paid version. Do NOT purchase this app. How did Oxford get it so wrong. The app constantly interrupts the user with nagging adverts for Oxford products in the guise of word of the day, which pops up about every 5 seconds, blatting what the user was doing or looking at results. Grrrrr. Again I switched off word of the day in settings but I have been constantly interrupted by word of the day while using this app. This is Definitely the worst app you can buy. Nag-ware Nag-ware Nag- Nag-ware ware Nag-ware Nag-ware Nag-ware for some reason you are unable to give this app zero stars which I would prefer to giving it 1 star which I am forced to do because it won’t allow zero. I would actually give -5 stars if this were possible..Version: 10.0.20

What are you up to?I bought the dictionary and thesaurus years ago. It has been good. Now when I try to use it, it tells me I have to download a new version. It takes me to a site where I have to pay full price again. Then from inside the app it takes me to load Oxford Dictionary show as if it’s a new version of the same dictionary. When I do download it, it forces me into a subscription service @ $8 a month! And it has a whole lot of other dictionaries that I don’t want. If I have to subscribe to this package it would be prohibited by the Trade Practices Act. It sounds like they’re reneging on their sale to me as a marketing ploy. I’m amazed Oxford University is allowing it’s name to be associated with sharp practices and possibly illegal forcing. And they’ve added advertisements. Give me back what I bought you thieves..Version: 15.2

Consistent issuesAs a dictionary it does its job, however the 2 star rating is provided based on the favourites function not working properly at all (one of the main incentives to get the full version of the app over just looking up the definition in google): I was told to re-favourite all of my words after a previous update corrupted the links between the word and the definition. I then spent a good couple of hours doing that. This latest update has now deleted all of my favourited words rendering the entire exercise useless and a waste of my time. MobiSystems, the app developer, has not provided any helpful support whatsoever..Version: 10.0.19

UnstableSince the last update the app has been unstable and it keeps exiting me to the main page. Additionally, The pronunciation is often bugged, sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t.I am quite disappointed as it’s not a free app and it should get better not worse. Now the app as well exits you from the dictionary page you’re on to the main interface page..Version: 10.0.12

If I could give this zero stars, I wouldWARNING: this app is unusable without paying for premium. You can only look up ONE WORD per day, then a pop up blocks the screen. Awful. Once you look up your SINGLE word, you can’t do anything else in the app. Anything. Word of the day? BLOCKED. Recent words? BLOCKED. Special Topics? BLOCKED. If you’re not going to pay for a subscription, don’t even bother downloading this. Maybe go for Merriam-Webster, at least that works. I was hoping this would be a good quick-reference tool by a reputable company, but it’s only taking up space on my phone. The description for this app is misleading, it is shown as “free” in the App Store. They should tell you upfront in the description that you can’t do anything without a subscription. It’s conveniently left out. It lets you believe that the app is functional without a subscription..Version: 12.4

DisappointingFewer definitions for many words than Merriam-Webster online. Maybe the online Oxford is better. Glad I got three day free trial..Version: 15.4

Somewhat disappointedI am a lifelong fan of the Oxford Dictionaries, and have several in-print versions in my home. Although I searched the app store for "offline dictionaries" and this app cameup in the search, be aware that offline mode requires purchase of the premium version. I have read in other reviews that the premium version still has ads. The developer seems to think it is OK to advertise ITS OWN products even in the "ad-free" premium version. That is unacceptable, so I will not be "upgrading" to the premium version. The free version works fine, and the definitions and reference materials are terrific, as you would expect from the OED. However, the screen is definitely junky and distracting. Oxford should clean up its act and user interface, and give prospective users the same professional clarity about features and pricing that they do in their definitions..Version: 12.4

DictionaryIf you don’t pay, you’re only allowed one word per day. Don’t waste your time.Version: 14.2

JUST a Basic Dictionary - Could Be So Much More3 stars because this dictionary is useful and very regularly used but at the same time it always leaves me wanting. Is is JUST a dictionary, and for me a somewhat basic one at that. There is no thesaurus, no synonyms or antonyms, no etymology, worth mentioning; far too many words have “origin unknown”. The definitions lack explanation of nuances between words with similar meaning and example sentences often need explanation. When I think of a dictionary I think of it having all of these components and I am willing to pay a bit more. Word of the day - I note that when looking up “word of the day” in multiple dictionaries, at least 50% of the words are completely missing from this Oxford English dictionary, which can not be attributed solely to the differences between British and American English, for example. Also, the words of the day are invariably useless in expanding my everyday vocabulary, which is what I expect from the feature, they are either so basic I already know and use them or they are words one would have to try very hard to shoehorn into everyday conversations. There are words between these extremes. P.S. I wonder at why my thoughts on this app are so divergent from RaewynBlair’s..Version: 12.2

RepeatsOverall, this dictionary app is very good, however, ..... Quite often, the same word(s) appears two days in a row. On the home screen of my phone, there will be a message saying, “Today’s word is .......”, whatever it is, but when I open the dictionary app, I find that the word that got displayed on my home screen and which should also appear in the dictionary, instead the same word from the previous day is there. It’s a bug, which should be fixed/removed and it’s the only thing I don’t like about this app..Version: 10.0.12

Worst App in the iOS storeI’ve asked for 2 years not to be harassed daily with requests to give this App 5 stars. It never ever stops. Its harassment. I like many others on here have asked for it to stop. I can’t recommend more strongly - DO NOT BUY THIS APP. They don’t value their paid customers feedback or wishes at all. And I’m totally utterly exhausted and fed up by it..Version: 10.0.3

New version won’t rotate to landscapeHas been a go to until a few days ago, but the new release won’t run in landscape mode on my iPad so a bit useless..Version: 14.0.2

Quality: overpricedNo writer should be without the OED, but I’ll be sticking with my physical copy, which will save me the £3.50 a month, in perpetuity, the app costs. Of course it doesn’t sound like much, and in the grand scheme it’s not, but nonetheless, it’s too expensive. If I were to use this app for the next 25 years then it will cost me £1000, which I think adequately illustrates the ridiculous premise of valuation that this (and many other) app(s) suffer from. Okay, if you want access to all 15 dictionaries then maybe this is good value for you, but I only want one, and I have it on the shelf, so for the 20 minutes a month I need a dictionary, this comes out at more than minimum wage, and as a writer, I earn less than that. If the developer can offer the English dictionary for £1 a month, I’ll pay, otherwise I shall remain a Luddite and continue with the free version and my book copy. As for the app itself, it’s fine. The interface is rather busy, the fonts too large, and the overall experience seems to suffer from gimmicks and added value-itis, but the core definitions are the same as in the paper copy..Version: 15.7

Changed to only allow 1 word per day freeUseless now it’s changed to 1 word per day, I’m deleting the app off my phones, you got greedy, is it not enough that you’re getting paid with all the adverts you have on there etc. for people that just want to look up the odd word or two, it’s just as fast to google the word anyway..Version: 14.3

I deleted itThe free version verges on being unusable and just puts me off upgrading rather than encountering it. It’s plagued with adverts and constantly prompts for 5 star reviews, the latter being dodgy practice anyway in my view. The algorithm for selecting word of the day is appalling- English is such a massive language that few people if any know every word of yet it comes out with simple every day examples or bizarre things like the name of an American jazz singer!! Why would a dictionary select an obscure artist’s name as its word of the day?? In the end I reluctantly concluded that the Miriam Webster dictionary is much better choice for an occasional user like me..Version: 10.0.20

Where’s my favourite’s…again?!!!!!I paid good money for this app and took comfort in knowing that this was THE official world renowned Oxford dictionary that allowed me to validate the authenticity of words in meaning, origin and pronunciation. It still does but post-recent new iPhone and app update ALL my favourites over a period of 5 years have disappeared..!!!!!! Not happy. Developers please fix as you’ve had years to sort this issue and still not done anything about it! P.S you’re list of presidents and prime ministers is great but out of date by more than 10 years! Do we have to pay another premium to get up-to-date info.?.Version: 15.4

AnnoyedI have had the dictionary for several years and use it almost daily. The update is annoying for at least two reasons, the first is that it is fixed in portrait mode, for a phone this may be ok but on an iPad it is most irritating. Secondly , when I enter a word that isn’t recognised in the O.E.D , e.g. porage , the app takes me to a completely different word, previously I would get a blank page so that I knew it wasn’t a word, now I am left unsure as to whether I have typed in what I meant to. I am trying to revert to the previous edition but the instructions for this are obscure. Very unhappy..Version: 14.0.2

Exorbitant adsI know that is a way to create income... But calm, please.Version: 15.4

InconsistencyI checked the word of interest on web system via University library system to be sure that I was going to pay for the service consistently across different platforms. I am particularly interested in Dictionary of Biology. The web version access via University is free of charge, but I was looking for more portable options. It turned out if you access the web of Oxford dictionary via University Library, you would get more complete explanations on the word of meaning. The subscription cost here only provides the very basic explanations of word. You can buy the latest kindle edition for more complete entry for a particular discipline (so much cheaper for the annual subscription) and I doubt the word of meaning changes every year. It can last for 5 to 10 years..Version: 12.6

Favourites deleted when updates???All my favourites that I’d been saving for quite a while and spending time organising neatly into folders got deleted when I updated the app. Should I start saving my favourites all over again? Or are they going to be deleted next time there’s update available? I’m really sorry to say this, but that’s right down stupid. And... so many bugs! This review was written quite some time ago but still no response, so I thought I’d add something to it. And again, a new update is available and I’m not sure if downloading it will delete my favourites again. Given the lack of response, I think I can safely assume that the answer is YES, my favourites will be gone if I update it. Very disappointing from an app that costs 30 dollars (Australian). And another update and favourites gone, no response from the app designers (4th November 2018) Yet another update, favourites gone, no response from developers (13th November 2018).Version: 10.0.15

WAS Better than googling-updated (from 5 stars to 1)Used to be great app! That’s why I PAID FULL PRICE FOR IT 6 MONTHS AGO. Imagine my frustration when all of the sudden it glitches with an only fix being uninstalling and reinstalling...which COMES WITH SUPER ANNOYING CONSTANT ADDS!!!, the fix? PAY FOR IT AGAIN!!! SAME PRICE! Ripping customers off gets you downgraded in your reviews. That’s not rocket science. When you pay for something you don’t expect to be BILLED FOR IT AGAIN IN A FEW MONTHS! I pay for something (say, a printer) and it conveniently breaks in 2 1/2 years, after the 2 year warranty expires, I do buy another whatever (printer)...but NOT from the same brand. Same principle applies. Dishonesty doesn’t pay in the long run. Sooo...MobiSystems on my “don’t support again” list...along with Brother printers. Ain’t word of mouth enlightening? Rocket science..Version: 10.0.10

Not highly recommendedI downloaded 2 dictionaries ( OXFORD&WEBSTER) at one time and compared a bit. 1. START: It takes slightly over 6 seconds to open the OXFORD dictionary, and slightly less than 3 seconds to open the WEBSTER dictionary. (3 seconds makes a huge difference when you eagerly wanna understand a new word you encounter. For this, I minus 3 ⭐️ .) 2. SEARCH:Tapping the search bar to look for the vocabulary, OXFORD freezes another second or longer. I thought something went wrong with my iPhone. The problem doesn’t exist in WEBSTER though. 3. PRICE:Premium of OXFORD:$9.99; premium of WEBSTER:$4.99. ($1.99 to remove the ads). I paid $9.99 for the OXFORD dictionary and $1.99 for WEBSTER, respectively, because I find ads annoying. 4. INTERPRETATION: I find OXFORD interpretation is easier to understand. 5. INTERFACE:WEBSTER has better and simpler interface designs. 2 things I like the most about WEBSTER’s interface: 1) letters are bigger. 2)the like button ♥️ is shown right below the word you look for. (in OXFORD, you have to click extra through a “...” button to reach the like ⭐️ button. In conclusion, I think I wasted $ 9.99 on OXFORD premium dictionary..Version: 10.0.19

Shocking memoryI want to give this app 5 stars, I really do, because I respect Oxford as an institution. But the main feature I use on this app, the favourites feature, does not work sufficiently. It barely works at all, in fact. If you scroll down further than perhaps 20 words in your favourite section, and click on any given word, a completely random word will pop up. Without fail the word you click on will just not pop up, you have to go back to the search bar and type it in if you want the definition for that word. Not only that, but it forgets words that you’ve already favourited, and so duplicates appear in droves. I can’t be expected to remember every obscure or interesting word I add to favourites, so I expect an app to do so. But no, it doesn’t, it forgets all the time. This app is definitely not worth the money I paid. Fix it, please! I don’t want to have to rely on other dictionary apps, because I find that Oxford’s definitions are best..Version: 10.0.4

Terrible appWhile the dictionary itself is decent, the app is a disaster. It is so unstable - often when you look up a word it mysteriously flashes back to homepage and you have to type in again. Hope this can be fixed ASAP!!!!.Version: 11.0.1

Pointless!! Against it’s own supposed ethos - really disappointing!!!I have always relied on the OED, own the shorter version and bought online versions. This app is completely useless unless you want to cough-up (I can’t check the written version of that expression because I’d have to do just do just that without knowing what it would!!!) I would be willing to pay for this, if I could actually find out what access it gives in the first place - seems pretty ridiculous given how the OED earned its authoritative status through descriptivism and the input of the general public, let alone its distribution. Seriously!?’ / #yourelettingyourselfdown 😜😢.Version: 12.7

Oxford DictionaryUsed to be worth having; now just wants user to buy Premium version. Lots of ads..Version: 15.4

Why I’m giving 1 starI purchased the Oxford English Dictionary Deluxe version when it was available 3-4 years ago. Having finally upgraded to an iPhone 8 I can no longer use the app that I purchased for I believe £30 possibly more. It doesn’t open or work in any way on the iPhone 8. I have tried multiple times to contact the administrators - instead I am supposed to tolerate this new version with relentless pressure to go premium (which I have already done & I’m sure almost anyone would agree £20 plus the already paid for £30 is a ridiculous amount to pay for a dictionary). The app is terribly managed & I was formerly very fond of the OED & I’m sorry that that is no longer the case. The quality of this app is now atrocious and I do not use that word without due consideration..Version: 15.4

Waste of moneyYou can get this free online. I feel foolish for having wasted my money. I’d hoped it would have more up to date definitions and more detail that what can be googled easily and for free. I was wrong..Version: 15.8

Search function does not work wellI like the app but have an issue with its search function. Type the word “tasty” into search and it will give a long list of words starting with “taciturn”. You need to scroll down to find the searched word “tasty “ which is at 21 on this long list . If I search for tasty it should come at the top, don’t you think ?.Version: 15.3

Oxford DictionaryI canceled my subscription but, was billed anyway. Something seems wrong here..Version: 15.4

Sick of ‘Word of the day’I’m heartlily sick of receiving the ‘word of the day’, sometimes even the same word for day after day. The current one is pecadillo. My phone beeps everybtime it occurs and I’m fooled into thinking I have a genuine message. I don’t know how to disable it so will instead disable the dictionary app and find a different dictionary..Version: 10.0.20

Worst appI upgraded this app from the free version and it’s not working, even the sound is not coming. Customer support is worst and i didn't get any response from theme when i sent mail regarding this..Version: 10.0.12

Feeling ripped offPaid for the premium version and it disappeared within a matter of months. Developer assistance was of no use. So many people are complaining of this, it’s a wonder they haven’t got around to fixing it..Version: 10.0.20

Good app, bad management…!I have had the Oxford English Dictionary app and the French one for some time, and paid for the early version. Suddenly, there is a change. No communication, just “Upgrade “ everywhere! I don’t think that’s an improvement and I don’t want 35 dictionaries, just two. I have always had all the Oxford copies in hardback including quotations all my life and I thought that approaching my eighties I would treat myself to a version that saves walking to my library… however, I refuse to pay any more than I already have, so feel that I either put up with an app that is now inferior to the ones I paid for some years ago or delete them. I do use them but not to the extent of paying this much yearly. I have bought a French app already and shall be sad to stop using the English dictionary. I can’t decide whether I am angry or bitterly disappointed! Good luck with your money making schemes, gentlemen!.Version: 15.2

No synonyms is a huge loss comparing to the websiteAs the title said, there’s no synonyms in the translation, comparing to the website, I’d rather save my money and use the website, plus there’s more examples of the words on the website. Why I should spend this much money on it. I feel regret buying this app. As a chargeable app should has advantages that’s why I don’t think it’s deserved for me to spend so much money on this one. But I hope it’ll think about this and make a progress on it..Version: 10.0.20

Keeps asking for payment even though I have subscriptionI’ve just loaded this onto my new iPad. I have a full subscription valid through to mid 2022. However, the app keeps insisting I need to upgrade to Premium even though I already have it. They’ve been too many glitches over the years with Oxford. Surely they could afford programmers who can make the thing work. Just followed their useless instructions for getting the Premium subscription to work. They don’t work. If I try to upgrade within the app, it actually recognises that I already have a Premium subscription but doesn’t activate it. These problems seem to start happening years ago when Oxford went to Mobisystems. Time to fix this! 6/1/22 Contacted Mobisystems. They were looking into the issue some weeks ago. Still doesn’t work. Haven’t heard back from Mobisystems. I deleted from iPad Pro to reinstall and it reminded me I have a subscription. But, despite that, it still doesn’t work on this iPad. Why did Oxford ever go with Mobisystems? Dreadful app..Version: 14.1.1

Could be much betterThis app is quite good but I am surprised how it lacks quality. You buy an Oxford English Dictionary because it has a feeling of quality and longevity about it. This app is quite clunky, not particularly intuitive and has several glitches. I think one of the most frustrating things is that it will give you a ‘Work if the day’ notification. This is a great was to improve your vocabulary, however the words are poorly selected. For example today’s was; Hilltop: The top of a hill. I mean come on. Give us something interesting that we can throw into a conversation!.Version: 10.0.20

Falls shortA quick note on the example sentences. It would be optimal if examples would be drawn from classic examples of good writing. Please watch your blatantly misogynistic language. For “mercenary”, the example sentence is “She’s nothing but a mercenary little gold-digger”. Seeing that the vast majority of professional “mercenaries” are men, it would be easy to come up with a sentence that does not viciously target women”. Perhaps we can refer to a business executive with mercenary tactics; there, it doesn’t even specify gender. I chose the Oxford English Dictionary (not American) because I wanted a definitive source for difficult English words. Interestingly, the strength of this dictionary is in colloquial American words. Although the name “Oxford” evokes the idea of old books and traditional education, if you read classic English literature by famous authors from the 18th or 19th centuries, you would be hard pressed to find definitions on this app. I found it terribly ironic that the Dictionary app or Google has more definitions than OED. I had the same problem with an American novel from the 20th century. It appears that the OED app is focused on modern newspapers and light fiction. I would pay handsomely for an app that has definitions for ALL non-technical English words; yes even the obsolete, archaic, and literary. I have no interest in reading blogs. I like to be able to read any book going as far back as Early Modern English, and find the definitions here..Version: 14.1.1

IrritatingThe word of the day is the same everyday if I don’t open it and look. I finally open the word pine snake today. It had popped up every single day since Jan 24. If I don’t open a word of the day, I’m NOT interested in that word and tomorrow I’d like to see a new word option. Don’t harass me with the same word until I open it. It’s in the history of I ever want it, or it should be. I find I avoid the app and use google simply because I’m irritated by the app. I don’t seek it out. Then within the app I can only rate it five stars. It doesn’t allow me to do a real and honest rating. Too bad I paid for the upgrade. Going to go see if Collins Cobuild has done a dictionary app yet. They have much better definitions and derivations. They never use the word in its own definition. Note the Colin’s. Cobuild app is bybthe same app developer so I don’t expect it to work any better..Version: 10.0.20

Rather Pricey for SomeI had been planning as soon as I returned to work to pay the one-off fee for the offline access and no ads. Now I find that the one-off fee is no longer available and I must pay a minimum of £20 per year. Assuming that I keep the app (which would be my plan), this would cost just under £60 for three years, £100 for five years. While I completely understand the need for users to pay for this service, I, as a fee paying student and a zero hour worker with kids to care for, cannot justify such a high spend. It’s great for those who can afford it, but clearly this dictionary is not for the rest of us (except for the one word a day we are permitted without the premium package). Disappointing to say the least. After posting this review, it did get a response from the developer, but they seem to have missed the point I was making (or didn’t actually read the review properly). I made it clear that I agreed it was necessary to charge, but it was the jump from a reasonable one-off fee to a fee that can be prohibitive for some that I find problematic. They didn’t address this in their response. They also ‘reminded’ me that I don’t have to subscribe; I found this quite a callous response. But it is telling of their attitude (and lack of concern) about their less financially able users..Version: 12.4

Too much adds.I liked it but every time I opened it, it started with adds, and asks me “are you enjoying this?” And adds adds and ADDS! I wish they remove SOME adds. Thank you..Version: 12.5

THE worst adverts - had to deleteFirst open in days and I get awful piano playing full screen advert with no dictionary UI even visible and no clear ‘X’ to close the ad? Delete..Version: 15.8

Inadequate‘Not found’ is the response to my last two dozen searches. Easier to Google an unknown word. Sorry I paid for this pointless app..Version: 15.4

The OED HAS DISAPPOINTEDAfter giving up on the American Heritage Dictionary (said dictionary being “updated” and requiring the app be repurchased on at least two occasions) I turned to Oxford Dictionary of English. I was minimally satisfied—until the beta version was released. Reluctantly I agreed to beta-test the OED. Upon doing so, my experience with the app plummeted when the full page ad appeared before the dictionary home page. Then there was an annoying NY Times ad at the bottom of the page. Pronunciation evanesced unless I “upgraded” to premium. Even looking up a simple word became impossible without upgrading. Apparently the app’s braintrust was given marching orders to monetize app usage to daily users such as myself. This is comprehensively frustrating and I am currently looking for a dictionary app that has nothing to do with this app developer. I need a dictionary available for offline usage, such as on a plane. Chopfallen with the OED & AHD..Version: 14.0

Another app bites the dust1/2/21: After my below review, I received a very kind response from a developer. I want to thank the developer for taking the time to respond and explain the need for the new cost. While it’s unfortunately unwise for low income high debt folks like myself to purchase nonessential apps with monthly subscriptions, I do understand the need sometimes to generate income for projects that I can imagine may be time consuming to maintain, perhaps including this excellent English dictionary. So I raised my score from 1 to 3 stars. Ideally there’s a win win solution for people like me, yet understand. Peace. ———— (Earlier reviews): My below review is no longer true since I now must pay to look up more than just one word. Pathetic. After several satisfying years, I feel disgusted and deleted it at once. I feel very grateful for this excellent dictionary app. It far surpasses the others I’ve used, mainly by including words not included in others. And to have such a resource literally at my fingertips for free is an amazing blessing. Thank you!.Version: 12.5

Oxford is trustworthy (a bit)The app’s good. I like the word of the day Concept. The only problem is that it has too many advertisements. It also notifies me as the word today is .... and then when I go in to the app it shows a different word usually the same word as yesterday. It is really very annoying. It should be fixed immediately. Also new words appear on ‘word of the day’ differently each day. One day it says 25th word is ‘an’ and the next day it says the word for 25th is tri-band. This MUST be fixed IMMEDIATELY. I really want to give 5 stars but I’ve got to be honest. Oxford should consider this NOW. Not 5 years later, but NOWWW!! Also premium is too costly. Please reduce it!.Version: 10.0.20

Worthless unless subscribeI have used the free version of the app for years and loved it. It was my go to for word definitions. Today using the free version online I looked up one word went to look the second word up and got a screen with a deal to subscribe. I close that screen try to look at the definition and again get the screen giving me a deal to sign up. I love Oxford Dictionary but will need to find another one. Read another review where the developer stated as a free customer you are limited to a few words a day. Based on my experience it is one word per day. I looked up my one word which caused me to want to look up another one but have to pay. No thanks. Looking for another dictionary app..Version: 12.4

RubbishThe word of the day is often different from the notification which is annoying. The spoken word does not work. Spell check and Google do a better job for free. Even though I have paid for this it’s not worth keeping. I’ll get the print version..Version: 10.0.6

Poor valueI’ve been very disappointed. Firstly the standard version comes with a torrent of unwanted advertisements whenever I look up a word. Secondly there’s a limit of four words per day. It seems this can be avoided by purchasing the premium version but this adds quite a lot to the annual fee and I think that’s poor value. The dictionary itself works quite well but at times I’ve been disappointed by a less explanation of the origin and the evolution of a word’s meaning and usage..Version: 15.3

Used to be greatI’ve had this app for years, I paid for the app upgrades years ago so it was add free and I could work offline. But now they’ve updated it so that if I want the functionality I’ve had for years I have to sign up to a rolling subscription. So I paid for an app, that they’ve now decided they weren’t making enough on. All I want is the functionality I paid for, I don’t care about the new features, but I have no choice. I’m seeing this quite often now, and it’s pure disgusting greed. If you’re going to change the way the app works create a new app. Thieves..Version: 15.0

Issues with app performanceSome issues that I am having with the app is that when I search for a word it takes a long time to scroll through the app. Sometimes the app also becomes unresponsive and I must close it down..Version: 15.8

Useless-hyjacked by the misinformedOne of the first apps i bought years ago was the oxford dictionary - which one? I dont know. However it worked. Today after typing in the word flimp (but never found out what it meant because) I was blinked by an ad to buy an off line premium dictionary for £9.99. Im sure i paid more for my original purchase. I went to about to find which version i had bought but never did get the full descript because i was blinked yet again and switched to another page. What is going on? Why has such a valuable app been hyjacked and blinged to such an extent it is unusable. This really saddens me. Can i please have my original app back?.Version: 11.0.1

Some poor app design issuesI purchased the full app. For the most part, it’s what you’d expect...I wanted a convenient dictionary without adds, and available offline...and so Oxford received my money. My two gripes are: 1) The Oxford splash screen at startup is too long. Seriously, their logo sits there while opening much longer than any other game or app I’ve ever seen. I already purchased your app, so please do away with the needless marketing - I almost purchased another dictionary over Oxford because of this, but that would just be silly. 2) I prefer to use this app in offline mode (quicker, who knows what apps are trying to download in the background, etc). However, I’ve found that a number of words I come across to look up, are not in the offline dictionary; only available once online - and then are not maintained offline after being looked up. Just a bit perplexing that the app doesn’t have a more robust offline dictionary - or at a minimum adds in new content/searches...it’s just text and phones/tablets have plenty of storage...c’mon Oxford, this really shouldn’t be an issue..Version: 10.0.19

App is now totally nonfunctionalI have been using this Oxford dictionary daily for quite some time. Recently the dictionary has become unusable. I have the free version I did not pay for an upgrade to premium. Recently when I try to look up a word I am given a prompt to upgrade which I decline. It will not take no for an answer and will not give me the definition that I am seeking. Today when I tried to look up a word the prop came up nine times in a row and I decided I was wasting my time with this app. One of the features that this dictionary charges extra for is pronunciation. Not only is pronunciation free on other apps it’s also available on the Oxford website without charge. The lack of pronunciation is a basic feature is also a big minus for this app. I gave the app a one star because that was the only choice. It really should be a zero because the dictionary app does not give definitions anymore and is relentless intrusive invasive and will not take no for an answer repeatedly. I rarely write reviews for apps. This is the only app I have ever had were the offer of a premium upgrade is met with total obstruction of the function of the app rendering is totally non-functional..Version: 12.4

Ads are excessiveWith the internet existing, maybe writing dictionaries doesn’t pay so well, but this frequency of ads (usually for a subscription and from third parties alternately) is excessive and makes the app almost unusable. It’s good enough if you want to look up a new word every now and again. But if you’re reading a book for the first time in a while, and consequently don’t know what half the words mean and need to look up 1 a minute, it gets a bit tedious. Subscription is too expensive. I’d pay £3 but not £10. Not when I’ve got the internet on this very device..Version: 10.0.20

A Great Dictionary, but ...This dictionary is great, except for ONE (1) very annoying fact, and that is every time I look up the meaning of a word, which is often, you confront me with questions of what you might want me to answer, or to change to, when all I want is to find out the meaning of a word. I am seriously thinking of switching to another dictionary to avoid this shocking timewaster. I urge you, please, to STOP this dreadful idea of yours. Christina ..Version: 11.0.1

In APP purchases, and subscriptions are effectively saying goodbye to me.This dictionary used to work, no features demanded more money. I just now opened it, and probably never will again. Hey money people until you jerks pay living wages, there ain’t one of us who will be able to afford, or justify, the push to pay for any feature or function, again, and again, and again. Many of us are already pulling old systems out of the closets, the systems that could be fixed, upgraded, and that used software we only had to pay for once. Maybe again if there was a major upgrade. But I mean MAJOR. Good luck with the run, it’ll get your executives some fat bonuses, but ultimately shady business is rewarded with aversion to anything you do. I certainly don’t see this product in the same light. Once upon a time I was looking into buying a print version. Not anymore. Funny how one burn can splatter consequences through the whole interaction. Isn’t it? Your clobbering me with corporate selling points doesn’t change that I had the full version and through your magic now it’s always a subscription. I’m on a fixed income. The message EVERYONE is giving me is that I can’t afford exist. No money, no welcome. Period. So subscription away, just know you’re throwing me into effective exile. Don’t worry, you’re not even remotely the first and you’re nowhere near the last. Disabled people only exist to be abused and exploited. Why else do I have to keep breathing?.Version: 15.7

Outrageous price hike for an abridged digital dictionaryBack when I paid $5 for this dictionary it seemed underpriced, but after using I realized the app is a condensed version of Oxford’s 12 volume collection. There’s only short definitions with little to no etymology included. The pricing in-factseemed fair. But now they want 8X the original price and for what? A thesaurus?! Plus, it’s a yearly subscription! Outrageous. Old users should either be grandfathered in or given an option to keep the scaled back edition they originally purchased. This new plan seems criminal with zero loyalty to longstanding users. Good luck maintaining this overpriced subscription model when so many other resources exist for free. I’m moving to Webster’s. God bless America.Version: 15.2

Define arthropathy...Not with this app... and MANY other words that don’t seem to register over the years of attempts. Others not only do it better but give “did you mean?” prompts in the case of misspelling which can be a secondary reason for many searchs.Version: 10.0.20

Of all things, why?All i wanted from this app was for it to be a quicker, hassle free way to get definitions, instead of visiting google every time. But, MobiSystems had to get as much cash as possible. Why, in a world when I can search up definitions to every word, for free, uninterrupted, in less than 30 seconds, should there be an app where i have to either pay an exorbitant price to look up words, or only look up 5 words a day, slowed down by constant advertising trying to grab my intention? Please do not waste your time with this absolute money making racket, stick to google, even if it is less convenient, cause this isnt worth your time..Version: 15.2

Missing 2 key featuresThese two missing features are equally egregious in my mind. Firstly, this dictionary does not have definitions (in its app) that would be helpful while reading. I know not every word needed can be anticipated. But too often I look up a word while I am reading for class and there is no definition for it. If there were a “student version” with more definitions and was priced reasonably (about $5) I would immediately download it, even at the cost of space. Additionally, a “request definition” button could help solve this issue in the long run. If enough people request a definition, it could help the analytics side see that the definition is needed and promptly add it in the next update. Secondly, when I tap the search bar, I do not want the word I just looked up to be remembered. Most search bars actually have a feature where the previous search is cleared when you tap on the search bar. This is a feature that makes sense. Usually, when I am tapping on a search bar, I want to make a new search. Not here, though. This app assumes I want to look up the same word over and over again. I operate with the former assumption, so often my searches end up looking like such: “shewantipathy,” when it should just be “antipathy.” Fixing these two issues would raise my rating to a 5 for sure..Version: 10.0.20

Great app but terrible updates! As a dictionary it is next to flawless and the interface is comprehensible and neat. However, after years of usage and plenty of ”favourites” one update erased them all without a warning. That is just careless customer service. I’d expect that from free apps but this is not a cheap one so I had set my bar of trust a wee bit higher. I wish they would have warned against keeping it up-to-date if it meant erasing a big portion of my way of using its interface. I’m now back to the vocabulary of Zoya from Glow....Version: 10.0.20

Search field - not easy to see what you typeNew search field has a blue bar in it do you can’t see what you type. Yuck..Version: 15.8

FineI paid for this app because of the reliability of the Oxford brand. My one gripe is that the word of the day is exasperatingly easy! I understand it might be useful for younger users or English language learners, but I would get more out of the app if there was a setting to increase the difficulty of the word offered so I can expand my vocabulary. Also, it would be good if there was a vocabulary builder to test you on words you’ve looked up, like on the Kindle..Version: 14.2

Why is there premium? When I first got this app, I was quite happy with it. But then this premium add starting popping up saying that I couldn't do the audio pronunciations, and that I couldn’t search up any words until I got the premium. Also, the premium price is quite expensive, and I think that word searching and pronunciation should be unlimited for free..Version: 12.4

Could be betterPredictive text is not good, words of the day are too simple and App interface requires some tweaks to help with ease of use. I paid for the full product to remove adds, and would love to see effort put into future releases and updates. I like the “Word of the day” feature but I think with so many cryptic words in the English Language some Little less known words, and ones with multiple syllables could be used in this good feature..Version: 10.0.10

Great data set, crappy subscription model. You just lost a subscriber.I've been a subscriber for about two years, and have enjoyed the OED access, and made it my go-to/first choice for looking up definitions. However, the recent update locked up, forcing me to uninstall/reinstall (which deleted my list of favorites), and now, audio pronunciation doesn't work, unless I upgrade to a plan that costs twice as much, (but to be fair, gives me access to 15 other dictionaries...in languages that I don't speak. 🙄) No thanks. I'm not going to pay an extra $20 a year just to have a function that I previously had, and that you have set out of reach. The browsing is rather limited, unless you have a particular word you want to look up to start, but it is nice that you can click on just about every word in the definition and have it hop around between them. I'm glad that you pushed this update a few weeks before my yearly subscription auto renewed, because they gave me a chance to cancel it before you took more money, for less service. Also, someone needs to go through your FAQ, and update all of the questions that talk about audio pronunciation, and which versions they work in, because those questions are inaccurate. (I checked, just before posting this.).Version: 15.5

An ad-serving app with a dictionary attachedThere is some valuable data hidden behind the ads in this app, but serving ads is its primary function. There are banner ads on every screen plus full screen ads pop up every few seconds to obscure the information you want to see with close buttons buried in the background design and not even always in the same place. Of course apps like this need the revenue from ads, but this can’t be helped by providing such a poor user experience that puts you off using it. Apart from the ads, you are often mithered by a pop-up to give a 5-star rating. The word of the day pops a word on my lock screen, but unless I’ve opened the app it serves the same word as the previous day, day after day. Some of these ‘words’ are actually phrases, places or people, and some are very odd choices; although the tacky app design looks like it is aimed at young children, I think I knew the definition of ‘hill’ before I started school. It might have the OED name, but this app does not live up to it. The ads may go if I pay for it, but I doubt this will cure the other issues. I think I’ll stick with the built-in dictionary app..Version: 10.0.20

Poor, words missing and not linkedWe’ve been using this dictionary for a while now to help with scrabble play. I’ve paid for the offline version as we often play down the pub with no signal which was fine. We’ve seen in the past that some forms of words are missing but today we found two words missing, very poor, how can you rely on rubbish like this. I have the concise paper form of this dictionary and I checked that to find the missing words!?! Plus, funnily enough, you can link words, e.g.alternate forms of a word, but not this rubbish. It crashes randomly sometimes!?! And uses up a lot of battery power quickly we just have enough juice to get through a super scrabble game. I would ideally like a refund because this is definitely not a place you can go to confirm English words. Plus I would say it has a lot of americanisms. I’m just going to lug the paper form around now. Don’t have to worry about signal or battery power..Version: 12.7

Still no dark mode — unusableAlso, the app privacy report is Schrodinger’s data collection: Mobi-Systems somehow simultaneously collects and tracks you by your data and does not track you by your data? Weird. Periodically, I consider subscribing to this app for the convenience of a dictionary in an app, but the reality is that I still don’t know anything about this company. The OED very specifically does not make an app for their online service. Is Mobi-Systems licensing OED content at a fraction of the price? I don’t know—their website says nothing about it. All things considered, I prefer to pay full price directly to OED even in spite of the slight inconvenience of having to access it via browser on mobile and logging in every time..Version: 15.2

Several UI bugs1. It keeps activating the system English keyboard. I use third-party keyboard (Gboard) so this makes it very annoying to me. 2. When the side nav panel is opened, I can still tap on some buttons in the main view, e.g. the offline mode toggle, which should be behind the overlay. 3. It would be better to have a favourite button straight in the word view, instead of hiding it in the three dots menu. 4. I really don't think left-to-right swipe should always open the side nav. It should do so only in main view, but being users back to main view in word view. Additionally in word view it'd be nice if top-to-bottom swipe can open the search view. Currently the 2 buttons in the top-level right corner are genuinely hard to reach..Version: 10.0.20

I enjoy it, but a few issues.Paid for ad free, and lately have been inundated with annoying ads. This has happened before. Old comment: After the most recent update, the app force closes. For me, it cannot be opened at all. —————————————- Old comment: Paid for the premium version. I enjoy the dictionary, but the voices that pronounce the words are not very clear, they sound muffled and that doesn’t help with learning the correct pronunciation of the words. Also, the notification for the word of the day is not always the word of the day. Sometimes a different word is presented, than what was on the notification..Version: 15.7

Absolute rubbish. Doesn’t save the trip to the bookcase for the real thing.A ‘new’ word every day that - unless you are foreign or have the brain power of a 2 year old - you will have known since you can speak. And then, when you actually look something up, you get about 5 seconds to read it before the ads come. I’m going to delete. Also - dear app creators - who is your market? Only those interested in words are going to want a dictionary so some useful words that we don’t hear or see too often would be genuinely interesting, but you supply words of the day like ‘jagged’, ‘whopping’ and ‘heli-skiing’. And guys, words and definitions are not the same thing. And ‘-ence’ is not a word. It’s a part of a word. And sentences should not begin with ‘and’ - but you leave me no choice. I hate your dictionary and I certainly wouldn’t waste money on buying the ad free version. Sort it out..Version: 10.0.6

Have to pay for itIt is, however, a dictionary and a thesaurus encased within the convenience and luxury of my mobile telephone. And for that, I pay..Version: 15.7

Learn what a ‘word of the day’ is Oxford!Should be a great feature shouldn’t it, build your vocabulary, learn exciting news things. However surely there are 2 requirements for a word of the day: 1- it’s a new word each day?? 2-it’s a word!!!!! ‘Mana pools national park’ has been my word of the day for about the last fortnight and ‘girl guides association’ for about a week before that! Surely not ‘words’ and clearly not daily! Other than that the apps fine but if I have another notification with ‘word of the day-mana pools National Park’ I might eat my iPhone!.Version: 10.0.15

Could be a lot better1. Constantly asking for ratings and feedback, despite the poor design and performance 2. Help section always seems to be blank, or just takes so long to load that I get bored and move on 3. Navigating around the app can sometimes be very slow, clunky, and leave the app unresponsive 4. Sometimes switching between apps leaves this app unresponsive and I’m forced to reload 5. Adding words to favourites seems simple, and creating favourites folders is simple, but there’s no functionality to add a word directly to a favourites folder. It has to be added to favourites and then manually moved to that folder 6. Moving between entries back to search for another word means you have to manually delete your last search criteria before searching for a new word, but because the app is unresponsive, if I try to press where the “x” delete icon should be the app has loads other symbols and I end up in my camera and have to close this, then delete my last search criteria before I can begin a news search I could go on, but the app is riddled with poor design. I can’t recall how much I paid for it, but if I got it for free it would still be too expensive..Version: 10.0.20

Untidy & loses informationNot an attractive app to use. Very cluttered. The more irritating issue is previously searched words (the ones you don't know & wish to learn) are all lost when the app is upgraded. I have always considered Oxford a superior reference for English. However, my confidence was recently eroded when looking up the roots of the word "methanotroph". This word is absent, though legitimate (eg it's listed in Wikipedia). The Oxford reputation and legacy would suggest something better than the current offering..Version: 10.0.12

Great Content, Annoying AppI consult this app several times a day. The OED content is just perfect for my needs, and it is great to have it in your pocket with you everywhere. The app is good for looking up the meaning, pronunciation and etymology of words even if you don’t know exactly how they are spelled. Being able to hear audio for the pronunciation is particularly useful if you are unfamiliar with the International Phonetic Alphabet. I like the Word of the Day feature too. As pleasing as the app is in these regards, it is annoying in equal measure. For example: * 2/3 of the home screen are devoted to Invite Your Friends and Rate Our App panels. It would be better if that space were exploited for something a user would actually find useful. * The top right of the home screen has a purchase button that takes you back to the App Store to buy more apps from MobiSystems Inc. I keep hitting it by accident, and it drives me mad. * Worst of all, the app keeps prompting you to rate it. That behaviour is aggravating in the extreme. The app would be much better, deserve a higher rating, and likely get more ratings and purchases if the developer got rid of these annoyances for people that paid for it..Version: 11.6

Disappointed with the most recent updateNot a fan of all the updates changing the layout of the app. Personally, I like the original much better. However, the app still served its purpose. The reason I am giving this two stars is because with the most recent update, all of my favorited words were deleted, ALL OF THEM. This is extremely frustrating as I have invested a lot of time adding and developing that extensive list and with one update, it all gets deleted. Seems like whoever manages and administers these updates is more concerned with the superficial aesthetics of the product instead of the functionality and maintaining certain features that kept the consumers using the app. Probably going to transition to Merriam Webster’s app following this update. PLEASE STOP DELETING SAVED DATA WITH EACH UPDATE..Version: 10.0.15

Expensive!This is a good app, but so overpriced!.Version: 15.7

Mrs HevinIt’s not fair that this was one of my surviving app that I used to depend on in every single way when I was in the college after while, building your family, starting work, moving away from using the app, then due to the change of circumstances, going back to the education, and having the need for this app I mean desperate need I realize that the app has been so controlled by adverts they limited ability for customer to use used to be free in every way and I cannot tell you how much it was a surviving mechanism for loss of people now I find it so hard so frustrated I don’t wanna even use it anymore that why I’m giving two star which I think I should’ve gave one for it poor accessibility anything I ask to do it take me to page I need to pay do you wanna upgrade that is not fair in this error of high technology surrounding us from everywhere we can get what you want anyway, it’s not fair for them to charge, people literally the pushing me away ..Version: 15.8

Shockingly briefI thought the OED was known for including more etymology and history than other dictionaries. This only has a couple of the most common definitions of a word and no additional information. I want to know the root words, I want to know historical uses and definitions. I want to know how they are used in a philosophical, religious or other context which might have a unique or particular meaning. This doesn’t even include example sentences, related words or synonyms…. I got this thinking that if I downloaded and paid for an app which is exclusively a dictionary, it would be more in-depth than the website. This has less information than a simple google search. Very disappointing. The only use this app has imo is functionality without internet..Version: 14.3

Oxford gets 5stars, Mobi 2Before providing the excellent definition, a Buy premium screen interrupts. “Buy premium” ads are one place where advertisers are rewarded for being obnoxious. I resist the upselling so as not to reward them. In addition the app sometimes—no, often—has very annoying glitches such as when the definition vanishes before I have finished reading it. Or, before I can type in the entire entry, an unrelated screen appears. Of course the content is top of the line, it’s the OED. But the implementation by Mobi isn’t worthy of the greatest English language dictionary. Hold your nose and buy it. Maybe Mobi will raise its standards to match what it is selling. ~~~~~ A couple of months later, still annoying as heck. Each time I use it I think about ditching it. The OED should have selected a competent partner. I am lowering my rating from 3 to 2. Weighting the implementation more heavily than the content, which after all, represents over a century of work by competent conscientious people..Version: 10.0.20

😘I love you guys I think your amazing and your make my day every single day even on the worst ones you pick me up in the morning and carry me through to the next day 🥰 I have a few concerns that with the new in app purchase and only 1 word a day you are disadvantaging poor people from having access to an education. Which is all literature and words made and I think if this is really the path you wish to persue? Then perhaps a 3 word limit because it automatically opens in old search and the fore stops you from accessing you word for the fat. Perhaps it would be better to release a short online free version. Like a primary school aged smaller dictionary funded solely by advertising and then 2 options like written only yearly subscription and a premium memberships with the audio and words sound outs...??? Just an idea I still want to support your app I think it’s just really really important that everyone has free access to a dictionary and therefore a good education and vocabulary and some people might still be struggling just with a telephone purchase in the fist place mate!...😇...🥰...😎😎...?...🤓!!!’.Version: 12.4

BruhWhy would I buy a sub to view synonyms when I can /literally/ use google and just find them there. Money grubbers..Version: 15.4

Technically functional but not a good Mac appThe makers of this app clearly have no idea how a Mac app is supposed to work. This reminds me of shabby Windows software: functional but ugly and weird and janky..Version: 14.4

Good app but ridiculous cost for premiumI’ve had this app for a while and loved it. I don’t save favourite words but has been great to check the meaning of some words when I’m reading. I use it a couple of times a month if that. I didn’t mind the adverts until they started playing sound without you agreeing. Also for some reason now I’ll sometimes search for a word, but I can’t get to the definition. Instead it just says I should pay premium and will never let me see the word. To the developers about the subscription price, you need to bring it way down. I prefer using this app over the internet but I’m not paying £20 *every single year* for the privilege. If it was a one off payment for £10-15 (like an actual book) then maybe at a stretch. But I don’t understand why you’ve settled on this recurring yearly amount?! Because of this I’m finally uninstalling, if the price was lower (and one-off) I would’ve considered paying for it. I’m sure many other users (current and ex) would agree..Version: 12.4

Laggy and glitchy on iPhone 13 ProIt’s glitchy, laggy when scrolling, part of the screen up the top flashes white when scrolling. Maybe just needs to be updated for iPhone 13? I would be happy to subscribe/pay, as I understand there is a cost you need to cover..but if you’re going to start make people pay, it means you need to up your game and offer an app that is smooth and works well. Once the app works well I’ll change over and subscribe. But for now will use a different app..Version: 14.1

ObnoxiousUnruly design vomited ontop with ads. The price of the service is ridiculous and the obnoxiousness of the design gives me no confidence in paying. Look at Webster’s to see how it should done. I pay for their service even though I prefer Oxford their app makes me want to support them. I own physical copies of Oxford dictionaries and have been a fan for a long time. This app is an embarrassment to the name..Version: 15.6

⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️Unfortunately the Tap a Star to Rate feature does not appear to be operational on iOS at the time of this review. There is the Oxford Dictionary and then there are a number of publications that no matter what the call themselves are nothing more than collections of words. In this format however if one chooses, or cannot afford to subscribe the advertising content I find distracts from the pleasure of using the app. However the cost of producing the content and hosting it has to be paid somehow and so one can understand the need for advertising in the free edition..Version: 15.6

DistractingThis app needs to focus your attention on the words more.Version: 9.0.2

Lost my premium. Tried everything you suggest.Hello, On 4th of Nov 2016, I have purchased the premium of the dictionary. Happily have used it well well since. And Recently I have changed my phone (iPhone 12). And your app had a big update I presume , to the version 15. What I did, do the update, and I found I lost my premium. I tried to restore it as you suggested kindly by clicking “restore” button down below the adverts. And it takes ages waiting and waiting. Nothing happens but restoring wait signs that never ends. You have now released 15.1. Only thing I found changed, when I click the restore, now it says, there is nothing to restore pop up message on. Which I would never ever expect since I am the one who purchase your premium before. And I have feedback from you saying you better follow the instruction in forum which I have tried thousands times and never succeed. All I want is, to have my premium back right now. Do it now. Don’t bother me any more with this issue. Thanks..Version: 15.1

Where is my dictionary?I have had the full, paid, version of this app for a couple of years. Now the app has "updated" and not only has my paid dictionary (offline) disappeared and won't restore, the app looks like a children's toy with word of the day, invite friends and intrusive advertising. What happened to one of my favourite apps a serious dictionary? Don't get it until they fix it!.Version: 10.0.5

It used to be excellent.I have used this for some years. Perfect. I use it very rarely but it is good. Now I have changed my iPad and had to download it again. Now it keeps asking me to upgrade to premium at an amazingly high cost for something I am likely to use half a dozen times a year. Most upgrades to avoid advertisements are at less than one sixth the cost and a one off payment at that. Ok, I could live with that, but the advert is now so intrusive that when I put in meet (for example) it offers meet (1) and meet (2) and puts up the advert. Ok, I close the advert and click on one of the meets. The advert appears, nothing else. So now it is unusable without this frightening cost because they have made the advert unavoidable and you cannot get to the meaning. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling and I found the meaning of one word. But the moment I tried a second word it went back to pushing the advert at me and not giving me the meaning. In other words, it has now become an app for which they are charging despite saying it is free..Version: 12.4
