Oxford Dictionary for Positive User Reviews

I put 4 stars, because app asks for 5 starsThis is a good free dictionary & thesaurus and i love using when I’m watching some tasks in quiz shows involving words in Oxford Dictionary, so I decide to buy full version without ads and with iCloud sync, but after buying the full version it still asking to “rate 5 stars” as “an ad” every time when I open the app or look for definition, so I put because it is still annoying. Again, it is good dictionary app even in free mode, but I hope that you will fix that detail in next updates, and of course add new words in ODE..Version: 10.0.20

Perfect reading companionI love to discover words previously unfamiliar to me and the origin of those words. I’ve not yet found a better companion on this journey than the Oxford Dictionary app. It’s so much lighter to carry about than the hard copy version! I love how the app keeps track of the words I look up so I can review them, say, at the end of the day to help cement my expanded vocabulary. It’s so easy to use I’ll find myself exploring the network of related words and their origins just for fun. My only criticism of the app is I do wish the quality of some of the spoken word examples was less muddy. Some samples sound like they were recorded decades ago. They do work, though, and it doesn’t dampen my enthusiasm for using the app..Version: 10.0.20

Top'sThis is an excellent App that is very practical & assists in so many ways to keep you on the straight & narrow when it comes writing & making sure you are using the proper words in any document. You won't be disappointed with this App! I am always referring to this App with regards to making sure that I have spelt my word correctly & that the word I’m using is the proper word to use. No excuses if you’re spelling or using the wrong words if you have this App. Top App.Version: 10.0.6

Craig StevensI love the Oxfords Dictionary’s and always have been my preference. I love the word of the day, especially when I know the meaning of the word in question. Being mobile has just made Oxfords Dictionary better. You can’t beat having good word power. It’s easy to explain something in a word. Depending on who you may be speaking with.I just like having a reasonable grasp on the English Language. Thank You Oxfords 👍👌🏽👍🏻👌👍🏾👍🏻 Craig.Version: 10.0.10

Product great, pricing deceptiveThe dictionary is superior. However, the distributor, Mobisystems, seem to expect payment for the “premium” version on each iOS device on which it’s installed by the same account holder. That’s a non-starter. Until they change this deceptive practice (they mention it nowhere, and “restore purchase” functionality only works on the “original” device) and end their extortionate price levels, I’ll use it on the one device and not deal with it further. Caveat emptor. You cannot pay once and use the app on both an iPad and an iPhone. .... I have changed the rating to 4 stars, because there is still some trouble getting the app to restore purchases on additional devices. It required deleting the unresponsive download and a new download and installation. Also, to be fair, the developer did respond to my original derogatory review by email, which sat unread on an unused server for six weeks. Their instructions for restoration, clearly well-intended, were not helpful. I had to fiddle further on my own. On the basis of the app itself and the product, this deserves a 5-star rating. An app that carries the brand “Oxford” however should not be flawed in terms of fulfillment in this way, I believe. I misjudged initially. There is no deception..Version: 10.0.6

Great app lacks great typographyWhile I enjoy the many features of the app such as: audio pronunciations, favorites, and others, I wish they would hire a proper typographer to help them set the text for screens. The definitions are not as easy to read as they are on other apps. The text is very condensed and it prevents the information from being easily digested. This matters in mobile use because we are usually in a hurry to find information and move on to the next thing. The camera lookup feature definitely has advantages for wanting to lookup multiple words, just be careful how many you scan at once..Version: 10.0.20

Oxford English DictionaryExcellent. It is very handy having the Oxford English Dictionary on my mobile. I have a few dictionaries on a shelf at home, and they usually stay there, as I find them much too big for my pockets. Whereas I have plenty of room on here for it, along with a couple of hundred other books. And there's hardly a day goes by without me checking the meaning of a word, or it's correct spelling..Version: 10.0.20

Great dictionary but some problemsMany more words than my hard copy Concise Oxford. Can do wild card search for words so great for doing my morning crossword. Glad I bought it and have used it with little trouble for several years. However the recent update seems to have adversely affected the search function. It now seems much slower than previously, particularly if I am searching with some missing letters (I.e. using question marks as wild card indicators of letters missing). I do this regularly to help with my morning crossword. Quite often it does not finish, so does not find anything and does not even give a “Word not found” message. I am using it on an IPhone 6S plus. I was on IOS 14 when the dictionary was updated, and am now on IOS 15.1. There has been no change in the dictionary’s behaviour with the change in IOS. I guess you have changed the search algorithm. Can’t you go back to the previous one?.Version: 14.1

LuffyThis dictionary is one of the best apps that I have downloaded. Easy definitions, examples, phrases and varieties of aspects to convey the meaning to the reader makes it possible to help us understand more. I have not upgraded as a premium user nevertheless I am making the most out of it. But there are more features and access available for the premium user to which I am looking forward to. As such offline dictionary and speaker..Version: 9.0.2

Search option needs help!Definitions are short and clear. The layout is good. However, one very important characteristic of a dictionary is to help the user find a particular word, he/she may or may not already know. For example, sometimes I do not know how to spell the word I’m searching for, so I use the Oxford Dictionary to find it. Your spell-check algorithm is not optimal; word options disappear quickly as I enter the few first letters I try! After a few good attempts, I give up, then google it! Clearly, Oxford needs a better search algorithm. By the way, I use your app rather than Google because I need one clear and concise definition, not millions of options and sponsored ads..Version: 15.7

Great but still a bugGreat app and I use it on a daily basis for work. However, my only issue is that it flicks from the viewed word back to the search/home screen automatically...a bit frustrating as, once reverted back, you have to tap on your searched word a few times before it decides to actually stay on your word long enough to read it. But I can deal with it....for now..Version: 10.0.20

THE OEDI have found this edition of the OED online/offline app to be extremely helpful as well as being very useful. To date I have found every word that I have been looking for, as well as some I was not looking for. It is extremely useful that on occasion when I cannot spell a word that all I need do is to say it and there it is. Having been educated in England, my spelling is British. But once in a while I forget the precise spelling. Overall I find the OED to be better than any American dictionary. I also own several hardback editions as well..Version: 14.4

Oxford DictionaryThe app Oxford Dictionary holds almost all the English words to know, updating every single time there’s a new word or meaning. It has a simple format that is easy to understand like where the search icon is, or where all your previous searches are. Even kids can use this to have a wider range of vocabulary since the definitions are easy to understand. I personally gave this a five star rating for all of the explanations above, trust me, no rip off comes when purchasing this app; that’s why when clicking on it it says ‘Most trusted dictionaries’..Version: 10.0.20

Excellent dictionaryWhen you want the best in dictionaries you can always count on Oxford. This app is no exception. An excellent dictionary that has everything you’ll ever need! There is one thing that happened that has completely baffled me. I created my own “folder” under the Favorites section. I had “favorited” many words and moved them into my folder. I had to shut my iPhoneX down and do a restart. When I went to the Oxford Dictionary the folder I had created “Rick’s Favorites” had disappeared. Along with the many words I had placed in it. Why would a restart wipe out the folder I had created to hold my favorite words? I’ve tried every way I know to recover the folder but to no avail. Hopefully the developer may have an idea of how I should proceed. Hopefully?.Version: 10.0.11

Wonderful appAbsolutely fabulous app. I use it nearly every day. It is extremely rich and comprehensive. And another very useful feature is that it provides the etymology of most words, which apart from being very interesting, helps to reveal the true meaning of words. I often marvel at the fact that I have such a powerful linguistic tool at the tip of my finger..Version: 15.2

Love word of the day, simply wish words could be rated above 6th grade reading levelI have loved the 26 volume Oxford dictionary for decades and actually owned the complete set at one time. I have relied upon it professionally through academic portals for years and cannot express how pleased I was to find a really affordable subscription for the Oxford dictionary (although, I am finding, it means it comes without all of the incredible and expansive benefits that come with the full membership). But I must say, it is beginning to feel as if I have the ‘New Collegiate’ or ‘Desk Reference Dictionary’ with the unimaginative word selections for the Word of the Day. Affordable or no, the Word of the Day would better serve the Oxford Dictionary I know and love if it did not seem a diminution of intellectual stimulation, growth, and challenge..Version: 15.4

Grate DictionaryI knew that would raise your eyebrows, well one at least! Apart from the ads on the free version, the word search is quick and I do like the fact that words, including variations of the word, are displayed during the input phase of each search. I’m a fan and will be upgrading to the paid version. NOTE: I also use Macquarie Dictionary, this in my opinion is far better..Version: 10.0.20

Good dictionary. This is a good dictionary but then again it is Oxford so it should be. The question is just how useable is it. I would like to see a short tutorial of features. I find myself always looking to see if I have missed something outstanding. (Not found anything yet). I would also like it to be able to replace Apple's native dictionary and correct or replace words on the fly instead of leaving the editing app, opening the dictionary, and then then typing the troublesome word into the search box. I wish there was a shorter way to do this..Version: 10.0.5

Sorry I lost access although still getting word of the day?Disappointing. Suddenly lost access although a paid premium member.Version: 15.6

Just one small complaintFirst, I want to say I love the Oxford. I grew up on Merriam-Webster. I recently switched to the Oxford because I started finding many circular definitions (one word defined as another, which that other defined itself as the former word), and definitions that simply did not lead me to an ability to use the word correctly. My complaint is simply with the Oxford app. There should be a back button that takes me to the word I was originally looking at. Occasionally I find myself in a word chain, where I need to look up definitions of words within a definition. Once I tap on the word to look it up, there is no smooth way to go back to the original word I from where I started. June 2023 update: the back button was fixed a few months ago. Works great!.Version: 15.4

Very helpfulVery helpful I really love being able to freely get any word definition I need in a quick simple way, love the highlighting of important figures, but sadly on top of all this positive feedback I must say that I think that the subscription plan is a bit to pricey and should be more spread out allowing you to easily purchase, either full access, full access to just the thesaurus and etc. I believe this because of the factors that it would allow people to easily chose weather they want just one rather than having to pay out for everything just to use only some of the features. Overall I must say this app is super helpful, for those who may need a dictionary / thesaurus quickly or to just need a quick definition / upgrade in word class / proper translation. I believe this should advertised more, things to purchase to be separated for better choice and more information to be given as you get the app for the first time. 5/5.Version: 15.7

App not loading updates.I have been using this app for quite some time and getting the updates as they come through however, now the app keeps on saying ‘waiting’ constantly. When the app show that it’s finished then I tap it all it goes through the whole process of saying loading, waiting. This has been going on for over two weeks. What is the matter with the system. It won’t automatically upload, even connecting to my computer, gives no result. I even take it to the shopping Centre .... nothing. Help please! I use my dictionary regularly..Version: 10.0.12

Must have applicationLanguage is complex. The Oxford Dictionary is a critical tool for use on a daily basis. If you come across an unfamiliar word, check meanings and uses. Not sure how to pronounce a word, the pronunciation tool is brilliant. Checking spelling, a must have tool. This is the best English dictionary for UK, Australia, New Zealand or any location that does not use American English. Suitable for students, academics, teachers, writers of any form (creative, academic, professional, etc.)..Version: 15.4

PerfectI am very satisfied with the app..Version: 15.6

Great dictionary easy to useUse this dictionary almost daily, since downloading it I've not used the other apps. So time to delete them!! Only criticism would be the price if you choose to take up the Professional version at $30 it's expensive. Saying that I use the free version it serves me well..Version: 10.0.6

Mar PIt is a must for people who use English as their second language. A must for an everyday conversation.Version: 15.8

DisappointingI bought this app thinking that it would have in-depth information about words in the English language similar to at least the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary which I possess. Instead the derivations and information are brief and not much more informative that a $5 dictionary bought at an airport book store. It is true that the app is backed by the authority of the OED but I am overall disappointed by the meagreness of the information supplied. Bad show, chaps!.Version: 11.3

Perfect and practicalHappy to have this useful and efficient app.Version: 15.4

AccuracyClear, concise, accurate definitions. British English as opposed to simplified American English..Version: 15.4

Website version is better so why pay for premium? The OED is an excellent dictionary (obviously) with clear definitions. But I'm very disappointed that this app version of the OED appears to have no links to synonyms / thesaurus. Yet these ARE available in the web version - both from individual word definitions and from the website menu. Synonyms are an integral part of word searching. So why would I want to pay for the premium versionthis limited dictionary-only app?.Version: 10.0.6

My favorite dictionaryHaving a dictionary on my phone is invaluable for checking spelling and correct meaning of commonly used words. I enjoy seeing the Word of the Day, though I do wish that they would mix in some more obscure words to increase my vocabulary..Version: 12.7

FrustrationI have used the Oxford Dictionary of English on my Kindle and on my iPhone, and I have until now been perfectly satisfied with it – and would have given it 5 stars. But tonight I have tried at least 6 times to look up a word, and the dictionary has not allowed me to do so. Every time I enter the word, an ad pops up — several times asking me to subscribe to the New York Times, to which I already subscribe, and then asking me to subscribe to a premium version of the dictionary itself. How I can award more than 1 star to a dictionary which refuses to define a word for me?.Version: 12.7

D-tierThe dictionary is extensive, and it has a great interface. It is very easy to navigate, making it simple to do things. However, unless you subscribe for a price, you are relegated to seeing only one word. Not to mention, you won’t be able to use features like audio or offline use. This system makes it nigh unusable, as there are so many alternatives like google, which work the majority of words. Even if they had a one-time purchase model, unlimited words without certain features, or even all the features with ads, it would be better than this..Version: 14.4

Exceptional resourceI am a researcher and writer and this is my go to resource for all things relative to the meaning, spelling, and application of English words..Version: 15.5

Good but not yet perfectThe ODE is highly useful and I value especially the cross referencing between related words, the inclusion of derivative data and the phonetic pronunciation backed up by an audio link to the word sounded. My only quibble is that in my early use the app switches between the word search function and services like word of the day. A high rating qualified only by a sense that the closer the interface is to straight search and find, the easier it is to use and that is not yet optimal for me. I am not sure also whether the fee I paid to upgrade the application resulted in the upgrade being automatically installed. Perhaps the details of operation on the Apple Store site could be enlarged upon or some additional messaging be added after the election to pay for the upgrade..Version: 10.0.20

Oxford English DictionaryHighly reliable and very easy to use..Version: 11.2.1

Amazing dictionary😄This is an amazing app to learn new words, I really like Oxford dictionaries. This app had been like a helping hand when I was at reading difficult words that is difficult for me to understand. The recent history section made me to recall words even though if I couldn’t keep that word in my brain. The finally the most fantastic part of this dictionary is that it is offline and in this way I can search up words if my WiFi is not working properly or in a place where there is no WiFi..Version: 10.0.6

Good, but you are stuck with their ‘Word of the day’…The OED is the authority on the English language - though the lands haunted by the ghost of Merrim Webster do not recognise that authority - and this is a very good app. What I don’t understand is why, when all I want to do is look up a word, I have to put up with a randomly generated ‘Word of the day’. Fine for people want it, but I find it only marginally less annoying that *not being able to turn the wretched thing off*… Good of the developer to respond. Unfortunately the response is irrelevant. The annoying ’word of the day’ you can’t turn off is *inside* the app..Version: 14.1.1

Love my daily word of the day.As part of expanding my vocabulary, I admire the word of the day option. The only con I am not fond of is the varying membership prices that changes at different times. I wish you could buy the dictionary in a single purchase with the option to update for a fee as the catalogue updates but for now I may have to wait for the next membership sale to give the premium option a go. Otherwise it’s a nice tool for reference and build on your word knowledge for conversations..Version: 15.4

Really great English dictionaryI love using the Oxford English dictionary app. It’s so convenient to have on my phone. I use it almost every day. It’s really useful. I liked it so much I bought the paid version which is a lot better with no adds and hardly ever freezes. I like that there is detailed definitions including word origins which was a feature of the Oxford book dictionaries that I was always interested in. The paid version also has a pronunciation feature which is incredibly useful, especially if like me you aren’t good at reading the phonetic pronunciation. Sometimes the app doesn’t work well if there is poor wifi internet connection but I think that’s my phone and not the app. It usually works fine on cellular data (iPhone). I really recommend this app. You know you can trust it because it’s Oxford. I wouldn’t use anything else..Version: 10.0.20

A brilliant appThe pronunciation feature is the reason I downloaded this app, it’s extremely useful to hear a new word when reading and the voices are clear. I also love the fact that I can save words and organise them into folders for easy reference. If the makers are reading this can you please update again for bug fixes, the app is currently glitching and returning to the home screen without prompt. Thank you!.Version: 10.0.20

OED’ Word of the Day Needs ComplexityMight you consider upgrading this “word of the day” automatic feature? Granted, I acknowledge the disclaimer that the word on every given day is randomly generated. That, however, is why the user can’t adjust it, not a fact that makes it impervious to the developer modifying the software. The problem as I see it is simply, if you will, that the words are too simple. My experience with such novelties is that they highlight words not usually found in common usage, in order to expand one’s vocabulary. Your app, on the other hand, serves up a daily dose of hopelessly commonplace nouns and verbs; for example, “rodeo” and “nibble”, respectively, as two recent offerings. As such, the feature is uninformative at best and, unless one shuts down the notifications entirely, a nuisance. The distinguished OED should expand the mind and the vocabulary of the educated user, not cater to popularity in pursuing the least common denominator among the crowd. Please consider this sensible upgrade to your software. Thank you for your attention to my concern, meant constructively of course as a longtime faithful adherent to the OED..Version: 10.0.20

Awesome appI bought this app because i wanted to be able to search words that i can across while reading. I find it very useful I originally started with the free version but i realised that i would keep using it. I got offered 50% off so i purchased it. Its great to use. No ads and being able to get voice pronunciation is awesome. Highly recommend buying if you read regularly. 👌👌.Version: 10.0.6

CompletePretty much everything I look up is in here, including compounds. The definitions are accurate, detailed, succinct, up to date, and entertaining. The apparatus to look up words works well. It has a function for “go to the previous screen I saw”; it lacks only a “go to the next screen I saw” function to be perfect. It uses the IPA pronunciation symbols, which I greatly prefer. It marks Britishisms, North American usages, usages from Australia, New Zealand, India, Africa…. They appear to update it regularly, although I haven’t investigated that, but it always seems to include the latest words and definitions. They naturally use UK pronunciation, but that doesn’t give me any problem though I’m in California, because I’m already familiar with the way I speak. :) I wouldn’t use any other dictionary..Version: 15.4

Good, but you need to turn Offline mode onI was having problems with the app until I realised that you have to go into settings to activate (download) the Offline mode. Then it works fine. Otherwise, only works when you are online..Version: 14.4

AverageNot worth the money. The sound pronunciation tool does not work, (on mine anyway). It's a concise dictionary, so definitions are exactly that, which at times is disappointing. The Oxford dictionary option is available as one of the "built in" dictionaries in an iPad when selecting a word and choosing define. So this offers nothing more other than the search function. Don't waste your money..Version: 11.2.4

Oxford Dictionary - wonderfulDefinitions are full, shown by example, all meanings are offered etc. And it would use the word “define” rather than the dumbing down words, now used on the iPad, “look up” when the user needs a dictionary! I have a 2 volume Oxford on my bookshelves and have yet to find anything of equal quality. Raewyn NZ..Version: 12.4

Oxford English DictionaryThe Oxford English Dictionary application is a solid resource for those who want to look up the definition of a word. Along with the meaning users will also receive derivatives of the word such as an adverb or some other example further illustrating the intent of the definition. Users can also save words they like as favorites and access word of the day which can be helpful to broadening one’s vocabulary. The app offers additional features in the premium version such as audio pronunciation but the the standard model does a good enough job for those who just want a mobile dictionary in hand..Version: 10.0.12

Great content, good interfaceIn the full-price, ad-free version, the content of the dictionary is very good. The performance is very fast. The extra-cost offline content makes it instantaneous and it's still a pretty small storage requirement (I've got 30-odd bigger apps). But when there's only one match for what I'm searching for, why extra taps to go to its definition?.Version: 10.0.11

Great ToolAbsolutely amazing, so convenient- & easy to access. Love it!.Version: 15.4

DisappointingI bought this primarily to replace my old Oxford Spanish Dictionary app, hoping to be able to use the English dictionaries as well as benefit from an updated application. The other dictionaries are all there but honestly, unless you speak or are learning multiple languages, there isn’t much need for all those other language dictionaries. The. Oxford Dictionary of English is most definitely not the OED. Not only is it abridged but all the quotes and archaic meanings are also not included. It’s really just another good but limited dictionary of English. I am still very happy to have the Oxford Spanish Dictionary on my tablet. In my experience it is one of the best in terms of content and thoroughness, capturing the various nuances of usage in both English and Spanish. The biggest disappointment with the new application is the slowness of the response. Not only do you have to go through the effort to pick your dictionary but with the foreign languages you then must pick the direction for translation and then type in your search word. Then the response from the dictionary is very slow, it can take several seconds for the application to respond with matching terms. The older interface was much faster. It appears that making the application all inclusive slowed everything down by an order of magnitude..Version: 15.2

Better Than MostOxford Dictionary is better than most online/app based dictionaries for having one key feature that most available dictionaries seem to lack. And that feature is the ability to search/scroll through the entire entry list A-Z. Recently I've made it a personal goal of mine to expand my vocabulary and one way to achieve that goal was by using apps that give you a "word of the day" until I realized I could learn a lot more and reach my target faster by using an atoz dictionary ensuring I learn all there is to learn of the English language. Although the interface of Oxford's app isn't the most use friendly and it's riddled with more ads. It does offer a complete list of all of its entries which will always separate it from other dictionaries on the market in my opinion..Version: 10.0.20

OEDBest dictionary around..Version: 15.4

SherreeIt’s so easy to look up words on your phone instead of trying to find a dictionary when you know you’re out, or to even look up words that you’re unfamiliar with that you say you will do later but never do, but since it’s so handy on your phone you look it up straight away and that enhances your future. 😁.Version: 10.0.20

Great but would love to see this included in an update:I have multiple folders within my favourites and would love to be able to add words to separate folders rather than just to the favourites folder. Currently I have to add words to favourites and then from there to the specific folder that I wish the word to be in. This is not a major issue but I think it wouldn’t be too complex to introduce and would definitely induce 5 stars from me!.Version: 10.0.19

Initially confused because I’d already bought the Shorter OED appI bought the Shorter OED app in 2014 for about £20, but when I had to reinstall it on a new device, it was no longer in the App Store. Initially, I thought I had to buy this new app if I wanted a good dictionary on my phone, and was not happy! However, when I looked in my list of ‘purchased apps, My old ‘Shorter OED’ was there in the list, and was able to reinstall it from there, which cheered me up enormously! I mention this just in case anyone else finds them self in a similar position. The Oxford Dictionary of English app here does not have as many entries as the Shorter OED, but the functionality and detail for each entry is just as good..Version: 12.7

The Gold Standard in dictionariesI regard this dictionary as my go-to resource especially for those words that are not listed in other dictionaries. The definitions are clear with examples and I love the additional button you can press to hear the pronunciation. I have both then book form and the App version for convenience. I like to save all the words I am learning on the App with the like button for later referral. Quite simply, I can’t be without this Oxford dictionary App! It is 100% worth the investment for one’s scholarly needs..Version: 15.7

Excellent referenceI use this app easily 2-3 times per day since I read a lot of books. It always gives me great I sight into the etymology and usage of the words I do not know. Well worth the cost of subscription. I would like to recommend the creators of this app need to pay more close attention to the list of US Presidents (out of date listing Obama as the most recent) the countries and their capitals (Kazakhstan’s capital has changed names to Nur-Sultan) and does not have the most up to date name of Swaziland (Eswatini). These items are important to keep current. Current information is one of the reasons I am willing to pay. Please update..Version: 15.2

Best Dictionary ever! This Dictionary always helps me with my learning. I can now identify words! I rate 5 stars..Version: 11.0.1

No way to give feedback or report bugsUpdate: The links are fixed but there is still no usage section for the word ‘since’. The developer also replied with directions on how to report bugs — it’s under Settings > Help > Ask Our Community > Bug reports. For an app not to have a “contact us here” link is odd. Maybe I just couldn’t find it. Otherwise excellent app. In case the developer reads this the link is broken for both the usage of ‘and’ and ‘since’ in the usage section following the definition of ‘because.’ Also there is no usage section for since..Version: 14.3

Enjoying learning English in Dictionary.Diversity in different words. Learning English can be a daily matter, it depending on how you look at it, can be a great fun..Version: 11.3

Latest upgrade made the application useless for me.As a frequent user I really liked it and valued as the best source of words in modern English. I have never used it on my mobile phone but on tablet. Now I find it impossible to use it as it appears only on vertical (portrait) mode. This makes the application completely useless as I cannot use it conveniently as I used to..Version: 14.0.2

A must have appI really like it - simple but effective, vast improvement in look and feel as well as effectiveness on the paper versions. Not sure what the premium edition looks like. I enjoy the daily incursion into my intellectual part of life too. Recommend it to anyone to have the free app and if you want to use it professionally then go and pay for premium! Paid for App is not as good, keeps forcing you to invite friends and rate the app. Hence it is NOT worth paying the price for intrusion! Very frustrating. Best to have the free app as the intrusion is tolerable and goes away. Paid app keeps on being persistent . Why pay to get annoyed? Sound options on paid one is not of exceptional use to anyone..Version: 9.0.2

My favorite app of all timeI use this every day when I come across words while reading books or when words come to mind or words I see throughout my day. It is extremely useful with multiple definitions and a thesaurus at one tap. What I also love about it is that the whole dictionary can be saved and used it off-line. So if I am on a flight or have no connection or just want to be undisturbed by social media, calls, text, then I could really get involved in my studies..Version: 15.8

I am no longer lost for wordsIt’s the OED and it works, is that not sufficient recommendation? I find it particularly useful for etymology and differences between American and British usage. It’s not as useful for English usage elsewhere where there are large numbers of first language speakers, such as West Africa, South Africa, India New Zealand and Australia. Australia has the Macquarie. For others it is a gaping hole..Version: 15.2

ExcellentThis is a great app and works perfectly. My only criticism is that 'the voice' could be clearer. Instead of the lady mumbling the pronunciation of 'the word' why not use the voice of Daniel? He is used by Garmin and others for satnav directions, the point being the sheer clarity and resonance of his voice cuts through perfectly and so the pronunciation would be much better understood, particularly by students of English who are unfamiliar with our vowel sounds in particular..Version: 10.0.19

DictionaryI think this is a really piece of helpful learning as it helps young children to get better at words and learn more so when people say something they know what it means as they can just type it up and the answer be right in front of there eyes. This really helped me as it made me a lot more intelligent. Without it we would not know as many words and wouldn’t be as clever..Version: 10.0.17

FantasticGood clear presentation of the dictionary entries. Oxford is the best dictionary, I’ve always found, with a huge arsenal of lexicographers behind the scenes. The Thesaurus content is fantastic in this app, so comprehensive and full of shades of nuanced meaning. The ability to download the dictionary for offline use is also a nice touch. The audio pronunciations are good, although the one for “sangfroid” is a bit muffled. Also, there aren’t as many different pronunciation recordings for a word as there are in the full Oxford English Dictionary (OED). The help section could be improved a bit. There’s a button in the bottom left of the definitions, with an icon that looks like a document, which I have absolutely no idea what it does, and can’t find out. I’d love a feature where the dictionary entry links to the same word in the full (OED), for those of us who have a subscription..Version: 15.2

Dropped a star - used to be five before updateThe latest update has replaced the classic and very usable interface with a “modernised” u/i which is unattractive, less straightforward and has a spurious “word of the day” section cluttering up the layout (with no option to hide it!). A backward step from the elegantly simple old interface which made using the dictionary easy. Now there is more going on, which app designers may love, but users don’t. Would love the option of going back to the old interface, or of hiding some of the new additions. The dictionary content is still great (phew!) but drops from five stars to four, in my book, because of the retrograde new look..Version: 14.0.2

GoodThis is a good app, but it has too many glitches..Version: 10.0.20

Good appI have bought this app with the speaker functionality and was working very good. Suddenly everything stops and the app couldn’t open. I had to download it from iCloud to use it again but The speaker doesn’t work and all my favourite words gone. The worst thing is it asked me to buy again which i have already paid for premium, I was very disappointed and rate the app with one star but after few days I got a notification of updates and I started to update the app , then the speaker functionality started except all my favourite words which are not there any more. At the beginning I was so disappointed but now once the pronunciation speaker is working, my faith on recommending this app restored. I really like this dictionary as it is very useful especially the one with speaker functionality and no advertising pop ups. I gave the app 4 stars, Just because it didn’t restore my favourite words I couldn’t give the app 5 stars which really deserves. Therefore , I highly recommend this app to anyone who wants to have dictionary. It worths buying it..Version: 14.0.2

Benefits my lifeThank you for helping me learn. I always hear people use words and pretend or assume to know what it means. But when I look it up I’m sometimes wrong and glad that I can learn the word to understand future conversations.Version: 12.4

Handy responsive resourcesEasy to use responsive app.Version: 15.4

SuperbExcellent dictionary, easy to use, a must for those who work with the English language..Version: 10.0.15

Swipe fixedThis has now been fixed. 5 stars In the older version, if you were looking up a word, and there was a word in the definition of that word, you could click on that second word to find the meaning and then swipe back to the original word you were looking at when you were done with the second word. Now that swipe option is gone, which makes it a lot more of a hassle when you have to look at multiple words. Aside from this I would rate it 5 stars. Also, would be great to be able to turn off word of the day..Version: 15.7

Feedback on Oxford Dictionary AppThis Oxford Dictionary app has played a significant role in my English learning process. There are a number of benefits gained from utilizing the app. One brief example is that you can develop your natural English thinking capability when using an online monolingual dictionary like this one. The app also allows me to learn a wide range of vocabularies, especially those belonging to the academic world list. Thank you Oxford for offering one of the most trustworthiest and wonderful e-learning apps. I hope the whole team and Oxford users all the best with their nonstop learning progress! 😊.Version: 12.4

Review and going forwardHi, An excellent App for quick reference. I also use the associated language translation App. This also is very handy. However in moving forward, I would recommend that u invest in a language Chat App in order that I can have meaningful practice conversations in the language of my choice. The advantages are: daily practice at my convenience, no need for a language teacher and a quicker grasp of the particular language communication essentials. Thanks. H.Version: 10.0.6

Still undecided if I’ll pay 60$It’s my first day of the free trial, I have till Monday, so far I like not being distracted on google the way I normally would, such as a movie pops up or a meme. I just want to know what ‘cosmology’ and ‘divergent’ means and not have to scroll past things. I use this app when reading so I can understand something quickly. Which is what I like: the accessibility to switch to a thesaurus and get a sound understanding. The app is clear and has cute words of the day. However, for a paid service I would hope to see some improvements; -Please make this a widget for Apple users. So I can tap, enter the app from my Home Screen and duck back into reality, like reading or conversation. -Improve the audio recording. Sometimes I hear a word and have no idea how to spell it, but I think it’s my Australian accent it struggles to pick up. Would be accessible if like Microsoft Word, it gives suggestions of what “I’m trying to say” or what the dictionary “thinks I mean”. Other than that, seems great for what I’m looking for..Version: 15.8

ExcellentAlways, an excellent addition, to learning ..Version: 15.2

User friendlyThis version of Oxford Dictionary is extremely user friendly absolutely I love the special topics along with other features it’s a joy to have and use I would be lost without it I use it most everyday for one thing or another, I especially love the pronunciation feature, a short while ago after a software update I could no longer use the dictionary at all,to say I was devastated is an understatement..Version: 15.6

The English language.I do not subscribe to the contention that there are several versions of the English language, (American, Australian etc). English is English, and it is either correct English, or incorrect English. Americans consistently corrupt the language, both written and spoken, contending that “American” English is an established and legitimate version of the English language. I contend that the OED is the only complete source of correct English. I further contend that Merriam Wester is a source of corrupt written and spoken English, which has been erroneously adopted by the American people as a separate and legitimate version of the English language..Version: 10.0.20

OEDWorld's best and only authoritative English dictionary. All others are inferior or only useful for the American version of the English language..Version: 10.0.20

The Final Word of WordsI was blessed to have been born into a family of readers. Our parents (and soon we children) always had a book or three within reach. Reference books (esp dictionaries & encyclopedias) were in abundance. When a dictionary was needed the Oxford was the one most used by us all. Why? Well, if one is an English speaker whether in England, North America, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, or India one would wisely insist on lexical entries being true to those traditionally accepted and used by the English. Such a lexicon is The Oxford Dictionary of the English Language..Version: 15.6

Useful and goodAn excellent app for looking up the exact meaning of those difficult words at a reputable source.Version: 10.0.20

OxfordIt is extremely easy to use.Version: 15.7

PerfectI have always preferred the online version of Cambridge dictionary to Oxford. That is certainly not the case with this app! There are several adverts but nothing excessively irritating. I do wish there was unlimited access to pronunciations in the free version although I do acknowledge that everyone needs to run a business. Despite this, the price tag seems a little hefty, especially when I check what is available in the paid version.Version: 12.4

Exactly what you want from a dictionary app.It is as simple as it needs to be, and it works perfectly because of it..Version: 15.7

A Really Helpful CompanionThis dictionary is a very good resource for me as I am able check spelling especially and meaning very quickly. I use it invariably to correct my mis-spelling. Use it quite often as my spelling is not as efficient as it used be in my younger days when I was writing more often. Helps me with my pronunciation of the words. Thanks for being available when I need it at a moment’s notice..Version: 15.4

Superb DictionaryThe sound recordings are often fuzzy with static. Probably need rerecording with modern equipment. Also a google like spelling correction would be nice...Overall fantastic dictionary!!.Version: 11.0.1

All the words in my pocketGreat to be able to check spelling and English pronunciation at any time. And it’s much lighter than a book!.Version: 12.5

Very useful, but too expensiveThe definitions are considerably more complete than the Merriam-Webster app. I think that the subscription price at $20/year is pretty steep. It should be less than half that. I’ve seen some complaints about the word-of-the-day choices but I think they’re perfect. Every one of them is a word that I’d like to use in everyday business or casual conversation. That makes them far more valuable to me than some obscure word that I might only have the opportunity to use a few times because few others would recognize them. They are all words that we learned in school and know their basic meanings but forgot were available to us. Good job there, ODE!.Version: 14.1.1

This is a trustworthy resourceThere are lots of tools on the web, but for writing in English this is accurate, reliable and easy to use. I use English and Australian English words and get quite confused by some American English phrases and some commentary on my blogs about syntax, spelling and word use. This dictionary helps to sort those differences out, especially when the audience is well educated people who are not from the America’s. I find Americans make comments about my spelling issues because they don’t recognise that we don’t use the same language..Version: 10.0.19

Dictionary appThis dictionary app, the Oxford app, has helped me build my vocabulary, more so than another dictionary app that I have used. This one seems to use a broader range of information for any given word. For example, I believe this app has more contemporary, technical and slang references. This app tends to retrieve a word that I am looking for. It surprises me sometimes, but I frequently fail to find ordinary, commonly-used words in some dictionaries. This app takes longer to start and is slow pulling up the word, which is unexpected; the other dictionary app was faster by about 5 seconds. But usually I am not in a big hurry; I use this app once or twice a week..Version: 10.0.20

My GratitudeAlways useful, sometimes thrilling (the special dictionaries, like the Beaufort Scale), and marvellous to have the pronunciation of unfamiliar words. I couldn’t live without it, and maybe five times a day I pick up my phone to check something or other, it could just be an accurate definition of a word I want to use. My heartfelt thanks to everyone of you who work to bring me this marvel..Version: 15.2

Dumb word of the dayI wish the WOTD was a word that would enhance our vocabulary and not be some obscure word that will never be used.Version: 9.0.2

Get rid of premiumPlease get rid of premium costs and please make writing bigger. I wil give you a 5 star if u do.Version: 11.3

Must-have for everyone.Who walks around with the trusted OED these days? I do!! Thanks to this app. I remember having my school bag filled with this pill of a dictionary and now it’s on my phone! Fantastic!.Version: 10.0.20

Good dictionary from a trusted sourceNot much to say about a dictionary app. Its a dictionary. My only gripe is that the word of the day function gives “words” which are uninteresting. I’m not even sure they should be in a dictionary - they’re more suited to an encyclopaedia. I know these are randomly generated, but even so ... For example, this morning the word of the day today is “Mana Pools National Park”. I’m not sure I’ll EVER need to know or use that one! Yesterday’s was “soil-like”. Turned notifications off!.Version: 10.0.12

Pam JII much prefer using this dictionary which has been around for years & uses the English language. Within this app is everything one needs when using words, whether for spelling, meanings or pronunciation. My only reason for the four star rating is that unless you sign up immediately for the premium rate, you are constantly reminded to. Before signing up for anything, I always give it a fair go to make sure it really does fill my needs..Version: 10.0.20

Used to be good but not anymoreSadly this app has deteriorated in quality. I recently upgraded to the pro version, but since then had found the app doesn’t work well. I get inundated with a ‘word of the day’ which I am not interested in. However, when I put in a word that a choose to look up, either the app refuses to provide the definition or it appears then disappears quickly, before I have chance to read it. Real shame as this app used to be good and worked well. Get rid of the ‘word of the day’ thing. It’s a gimmick that nobody wants..Version: 10.0.12

Awesome!Awesome!.Version: 9.0.2

Good but bugs.I found this app very valuable especially since you can place words in a favourites section to recall later. Using words frequently is the best way to learn. That said , there is a bug in the latest update. Words selected for my favourites , once tapped upon no longer appear with their definition. Instead a different word with its definition appears. Please fix..Version: 11.2.2

Love it!UPDATED UPDATE: I updated to a new phone and the app works just fine. I just needed to restore the purchase within the app. All the reviewers who said it had to be repurchased were not correct. UPDATE: Bought the upgrade and still love it! Highly recommend! Best dictionary ever, and you CAN take it with you. This is a wonderful app. I am sorely tempted to overuse adjectives and exclamation marks in describing it. I do recommend it. It is very useful, takes up no shelf space, gathers no dust, and you can take it with you everywhere you go..Version: 10.0.20

Absolute Reliable English Dictionary ConvenienceThe Convenience of having such an easy to use and reliable dictionary right on hand in my pocket, everywhere I go, at all times, is priceless. Although one would naturally assume there would be a Thesaurus option included within this app, but there is not! Why?.Version: 10.0.20

Good dictionaryWorth the upgrade to have offline dictionary with you, I do like to have that. The word of the day could be way better though, I get notifications showing me what the word is with some bizarre examples such as ‘ear candle’ or ‘partially sighted’ - all fair enough but unless you go in and look at the word and its meaning it just keeps recurring each day with the same word. I bought this to try and further improve my vocabulary and specifically for this feature, which could be so much better. I appreciate that others maybe not want this and as it still functions well as a dictionary I’m happy to give 4 stars..Version: 10.0.20

There are no other English dictionariesThe OED is THE standard when it comes to the English language with correct spelling. This app is fantastic and I use it almost every day. No other dictionary comes close for accuracy, especially for formal writing. Having the correct pronunciation is a bonus. Webster’s etc are for the American language, a derivative of English. Stick to the OED..Version: 15.4

OEDIn my junior year of high school we read many short stories in our English prep class. As you read and came across a word that wasn’t clear you were to write it down. Those were accumulated and researched by three fellow students that were given one free point toward their grade. They were to define the word using only the OED paying close attention to the context, date included since word meanings can change in time, of the word in question. This averaged 625 words every two weeks. We would then have either “33”s or “25”s where three 33s would make up a test grade or four 25s. We were excited to have the 33s as that meant we were given a free point. The test was administered when she felt it was time so you would walk in to see either 33 or 25 words written on the chalk board. Misspelling a word within your answer’s definition would cost you seven points and misspelling the word to be defined cost you nine points. Yes, you could get a negative test grade number. The OED was Beulah B. Harper’s “bible” and we came to use it in all of our subjects’ research text lists complete with footnotes to the point that we had memorized all the footnote basics of the OED because it was used so many times. To this day I still use it as the definitive answer to settle definition disputes. - JJBJr.Version: 12.4
