Proton Mail - Encrypted Email for Negative User Reviews

Latest update is a disasterI can’t access my mailbox without a persistent orange ‘timed out’ message banner. When the emails finally show, I can’t open them and get a blank page. Content of sub-folders has completely disappeared. Am beside myself. Please fix….have lost valuable content..Version: 3.1.3

The email is not loaded quite oftenI’m using Proton mail because I thought it’s good to go without Google anyway. However, some emails are not loaded right, and it shows nothing which should contain a lot of information for my small business. I appreciate Protonmail as the counterpart of Google, however I wish I could have smooth loading as next version….Version: 4.0.6

Great service, poor applicationThe email service itself is great. The extra security is far better that Gmail and Outlook, however when writing emails and such I’m finding that the page doesn’t present properly to the phone screens dimensions so it jumps around. Naturally this makes it incredibly difficult to write an email as you can’t see what you’re writing. Hopefully these issues get resolved in a patch..Version: 4.13.0

BY-PASS EMAIL CENSORSHIPWith 4000+bit encryption there is no way people can censor your emails like Microsoft or Telstra have been doing to me. I started sending emails with photos of Celestial anomalies and straight away attracted the attention of the Authorities who weren’t happy with that and so sent my emails and deleted the pictures in transit to their destination. I don’t know if the recipient can open this email that is encrypted with password if they don’t use PRONTON mail...but lets hope it by-passes censorship!!.Version: 1.12.4

Not user friendlyCan’t “select all” and delete. Have to delete each email in inbox individually. Very time consuming when your inbox is full of rubbish..Version: 4.2.2

Great encrypted email service but free plan should have bigger storageI’ve missed out on the free upgrade 1GB offer and I’m very disappointed. I completed the 4 tasks on 20th of January, was I too late? Please give free users another chance to upgrade 500MB to 1GB sometime in the future or how about let us buy more storage. I would happily buy to add storage, I’m willing to do one time purchases than subscription..Version: 1.15.10

Good service with poor UX designI’ve moved my personal and company emails to Proton because I want to prioritise privacy and security. However, the app really is pretty lousy. If ProtonMail wants to reach more people they really need to bring in some design experience to uplift the app. More controls for managing the inbox (multi-select, swipe to archive, dark mode, typography controls, clearer indication of which inbox a message is in etc). I’m gritting my teeth and baring if for now but I hope ProtonMail are listening and will place more value on the design. Improving the overall user experience will only serve to increase the confidence their customers have that they’re investing in a great platform..Version: 1.12.7

BE WARNED - using Protonmail can pose serious risksI have successfully used protonmail for some time until recently; however even if you record your written password and later enter the password having a transcription error -Protonmail will lock you out of your account on the grounds you the account holder being viewed as a hacker , or robot ! Trying log back into your account is guaranteed to be made a nightmare and almost impossible as no matter what - you the paid account holder is not viewed as legitimate subscriber. Never put all ‘your eggs in one basket’ when it comes to protonmail as once you lose access all your important email records are lost as well as you money .Protonmail can ruin your life as constantly viewing you the account holder as a hacker , and no endeavour by subscriber is considered by protonmail in helping you to reestablish login acces to your to your paid account ..Version: 1.15.7

Protonmail good; app not so muchI like proton mail except for the silly “All Mail” box which seems to store things I thought I deleted. The app doesn’t allow you to bcc yourself on all messages automatically which is something I started doing a while ago. So I find it annoying. So when I try to clear out my inbox and clear out all mail, I delete my sent messages that I hadn’t filed and lose all record unless I filed a response to the message I sent. I can learn new habits I suppose, but I wish the app allowed me to say I always want to bcc or cc myself. PS: the developer responded to my silly “all mail” comment. They like the box. But here is the issue. I use thunderbird. I go in and delete all junk and trash. However those messages stay in the all mail box. To get rid of them altogether, I have to delete the messages in the all mail box. But when I do that, it deletes all my sent messages. So deletion works one way from trash and junk but two ways from sent mail..Version: 1.15.4

Lacks basic email client featuresStill no conversation threading or dark mode after years. These features would take a few days at most to implement..Version: 1.15.4

It’s dead JimSince last update I can’t open the app on iphone or Ipad.Version: 1.11.3

Can’t send important emails/inconsistentI’ve been using Prtnmail for a while, and it has recently been brought to my attention that I haven’t been able to send emails to specific secure emails, namely to my Credit Union Financial Operations (finops) and to the Claims Adjuster of my insurance company. Additionally, I can’t use my ProtonMail email address as my primary email address for my bank account, as they don’t allow anonymous email addresses to be used by their customers. Is/are there ways to get around my issues I’m experiencing? These are important emails, and I wasn’t aware that they didn’t go through until I had contacted the aforementioned companies to follow-up with my emails. Had I not contacted my Credit Union, I would not have known that my email message didn’t get received by the finops department of my Credit Union. On the other hand, I did receive an email alert immediately after attempting to send my message to the Claims Adjuster stating that my message failed to deliver. Can somebody at ProtonMail lend me assistance or explain the reason(s) as to why my messages aren’t going through? How can I resolve this issue? This is a deal-breaker for me, and I’ll need to find a secure email server that I can use for more consistency/reliability. It makes me wonder whether or not other important email messages I had “sent” were actually sent to the recipient(s)..Version: 1.12.6

Good but needs to use email notification soundWorks fine as an email app but I really need this app to use the iOS email notification sound, or at least allow the sound to be customised. Instead proton mail only uses the default notification sound. This is annoying because I rely on sound as an audible cue to filter expected notifications. If proton makes the same sound as every other app, I might miss email. I hope they fix this soon, it is a simple usability boost that’s common to all other email apps..Version: 4.6.0

Lost all of my emailsIn the process of de googling myself, I turned to proton mail. The free version worked so well that I ended up paying for 2 years as well as getting Proton VPN. Unfortunately, two days ago, I lost all of my important emails, the ones I brought over from other services. I was prompted to log into the beta version after downloading that, and once I logged back in, all of my messages disappeared. Now, all of my recovery codes, including financial information, is gone from my inbox. After trying all avenues, I reached out to support, and still waiting for a resolution, 3 days in. Ticket number 592823.Version: 1.12.6

DisappointingThe app is giving endless errors day by day. I switched all my accounts to protonmail and and now they don’t have an application which serve the purpose. Unfortunately they even don’t let us to use other mail clients. They are not providing a good app for the sake of using paid version (which allows using other mail clients) they always give endless troubles with their native mailing app. It’s so frustrating to keep waiting to load the mail or unable to read an impatient mail because of this stupid app. Sent them mail several times and still having the issues..Version: 4.0.0

Slow on load, doesn’t show emails for a long timeRecently the app takes forever to load and doesn’t show emails for a long time. You’ll need to force close the app numerous times or wait quite a while for the emails to actually show up. It’s incredibly frustrating..Version: 4.7.0

A good product let down by poor recovery protocolsProton is a great champion of internet privacy and has some good app products supporting this objective. This is a solid, no frills, encrypted email service which does everything it is supposed to do. However, it seems to be aimed at a tech-savvy market. For example, the app doesn't warn you that, if you reset your password, it has the effect of decrypting all your emails (making them unreadable) unless you then use the old password to reactivate the encryption keys. This is a bit silly tbh because most people will only want to reset their password if they've forgotten the previous one. To avoid this fate, you have to write everything down at least once and make a record of it, which somewhat defeats the privacy objective. Because of this flaw, I wouldn't want to be overly reliant on Proton for email functionality. The inbox screen display is a bit dour but is fit for purpose. If they could make the screen view visually more appealing, the product overall would be more attractive..Version: 4.8.0

Answering back an email sends pictures or attachment you received again, even if you delete themNo setting where to avoid it. Any mail app has a setting where automatically you don’t send back MB of photos again. Is it so hard to add it 😖? Please!.Version: 4.8.1

Worse NowI did not think they could get worse but they have They do not answer any support issues because they are scared to death to face the truth that there failing . It doesn’t reflect here because Apple reviews haven’t been honest in many years but in other Social media and forums people are very upset . They cannot separate regular mail from spam so all your emails are found in spam . I did some extra work for someone at a company and in return I received some big coupons but Proton will not allow any attachments come through even though this company is a trusted and in my contacts. I am also signed up at their site with my proton credentials but that make no difference to Proton. Therefore I had to set up a temporary email with gmail to get the coupon which is insulting because I just got through transferring everything to Proton . Please what ever you do stay away from the premium package because it isn’t worth at all . I really need my head examined because they started going down hill 6 months ago and I still had faith that the premium plan would be better even after the free side was failing on all fronts but that was my stupidity and now I am paying for it . I wish they would give us some sign things will get better but they actually take the time to send me a email to tell me they done have time to answer my support email ..Version: 4.2.2

Terrible billing practicesThis company has terrible billing practices. They are not consistent between accounts and it is almost impossible to get out of the subscription because the only way to get out of it is to downgrade the subscription—there isn’t a “do not renew button“ Once you pay for the year, you can’t get your money back, they only issue credits. So if you think “I guess I will use it, because I can’t get my money back” , you have to set a calendar notification for the day before it is set to renew in order to turn it off. Otherwise, the only answer is to downgrade the subscription so that it doesn’t renew. If you choose to downgrade, you will lose all of your account benefits and a Proton credit will be issued (not a real credit where the charges are reversed). So your choice is to downgrade and lose your money or set a calendar reminder just prior to the renewal date so that you can shut it off..Version: 3.1.7

Can’t Login AnymoreWas an okay app. However since the latest update I’ve been unable to login. I just get an error stating that the data is in an incorrect format. I can log in fine from the website and can use it fine on my iPad which has an older version of the app, so I know my credentials are correct..Version: 3.1.3

Proton FailI’ve been using the app off and on since August 2021, but not as my primary. Then one day out of the blue it logged me out and said “Your session has expired because you have been inactive for awhile or because it has been revoked”. Great. I tried my password, but it no longer works, I guess they erased it with their recent update and or reset it? I do not have MFA or another security email associated with it. When I reached out to them for help they asked me many questions and I answered to the best of my ability. One of which was what was in my sent folder, I told them and another was what time I last logged into the app. Very odd questions, I have no clue the last time I logged into the app, I would not have the precise time and further more I don’t logon into it, I just touch the app! They refused to help me. They stated, “We regret to inform you that the answers you provided were insufficient to validate your account ownership”. I get it, it’s a security thing and in some ways my fault for not setting up more security measures, but I’ve given them a lot of details, what’s in my inbox, deleted and sent folder, also when I downloaded the app for the first time. Still nothing, with no way to help me. Now I have to change my email on a lot of my accounts yet again which you can see in my email box that they asked about. One of which, Dominos I won’t be able to, goodbye to my points for a free pizza and good bye Proton unless you can assist a hungry man out..Version: 3.1.7

Locked out of accountThis worked fine...until it didn’t. Have tried to login via the app and the desktop site, both of which tell me my account is unavailable and to try again in a few minutes. No other explanation. It was working fine last night so what could have possibly happened in my sleep? The best part is on the help contact form you can only put your email address for them to get back to you! Well that’s great protonmail how am I supposed to get that! So I have completely no access to my emails which puts me in a spot of trouble. Atrocious.Version: 1.12.7

Wish I could use itNot sure why four point font is the default. Smallest font size I’ve ever seen on an app. Can’t be changed. It should pick up the default font size from the iOS accessibility settings, and take a tip from every other email app about what size is normal. Completely unusable unless you have better than 20/20 vision, which presumably the programmers have. Too bad, seems like it might be good, gave it an extra star for potential..Version: 4.11.0

Needs work but hopefully will get thereIt is certainly not as slick as other mail apps and its feature range is narrower than accessing the account via a browser. Hopefully, it will be further developed. EDIT: August 2020 - the problem described below still persists. Perhaps less often than before but the latest update was supposed to have resolved it(?). It has not. One annoying thing is that on my iPhone XS with latest iOS trying to open the app from a new message notification often causes the app to momentarily open and then crash. This has been going on for many months, maybe more than year and I doubt I am the only one to report it..Version: 1.12.2

I got the code but...When I was at the point for the verification code, I got the code, and I typed it in and it kept telling me it was wrong, then it disabled me and won’t let me back on. Oh and I want a nickname of my choice, I don’t care if someone else has the same one!.Version: 1.11.6

"new redesign" started a downhill slideCurrent top issues with the app for me: - addition of a 'feature' to send emails to backup email account to tell me I have unread emails in my primary account (really? who wants email to tell you that you have email?) - unreadably small font size for mobile devices that cannot be changed, making the app basically useless on a phone for many. - settings in ios app are not remotely similar to settings in the browser version of proton mail; many new and existing 'features' and settings cannot be turned off or changed from within the ios version of the app. - pre-scripted responses to issues that always start with 'sorry for the "inconvenience" along with a promise to 'listen' to complaints...hey, guys, don't apologize, don't 'listen'- instead take some action on the problems, and quit trying to add 'features' only a small minority of paying customers want! - recent service disruptions large enough to warrant an 'explanation' from the management team- but not planned well enough to warn users in advance of a major event. - rhetoric from the management team that always seem to blame problems on the valiant struggle proton is undertaking to make the internet safer and more private- this reads like marketing speak, and is vaguely insulting to the intelligence of paying customers..Version: 4.0.1

By criminals, for criminalsNot safe.Version: 4.11.0

This has gone downhill :(I’ve been using ProtonMail for years, but over the last few months I’ve had some real problems with the app. It has been signing me out a few times a day (sometimes when I am in the middle of reading an email), which is really annoying. It also seems to intermittently decide to not show any message information in notifications, instead saying “you have one new message.” Also, with the recent redesign, I keep on hitting to unsubscribe from mailing lists instead of loading remote content, due to how the page scrolls as it loads. I really love PM as an email provider, and their browser mailbox is lovely. However, I need something that works with me across all platforms, and the iOS app is pretty bad after the recent overhaul. I really don’t want to switch, but it looks like it’s time for me to move to something new..Version: 3.1.7

The new theme degrades the user experience.I am a PRO version customer. the new force-imposed theme is awful, it's not ergonomic, and the usability is poor. The list of emails is unreadable. The user experience is very degraded with your new theme..Version: 3.1.2

Same issue. Crashing in iPhoneWorking fine until recently. Now it doesn’t work in my iPhone at all.Version: 4.7.0

Still far way to get comparable.Downloaded, installed and created account. But their system needs much more improvements I think. They ask to import contacts/mails from other mail providers, but on very next step, their system fails with 1st name/family name and refuses to import. Also, do they really think the peoples enjoying free GB’s, highly user friendly, and advanced system will ditch that and use 500mb mail system?!!!!!.Version: 4.2.4

DisappointedI’m currently overseas and my yearly subscription didn’t go through because my money situation is tight so I have paid for a month subscription and I cannot access my emails on proton where my flight tickets are to return home I think proton mail is a bad choice if you surrender your safety to then they can control your safety.Version: 4.6.0

Select all optionHi, can you please add a select all option inside trash folder, also whenever I delete an email it still shows in ALL MAIL folder which is 😕..Version: 4.1.1

Email attachments cannot it be found?I’m tearing my hair out with this email system. I paid for extra data bc the free version doesn’t provide enough. If you hv a string of emails on the same topic, & there are different attachments over time, it’s almost impossible to find the latest attachment - or any for that matter!! Such a basic requirement in an email system. I’ve gone to chats abt this & also searched reddit without an answer or solution. It’s a thing. Many are discussing this???.Version: 4.7.0

Notifications are so badProtonMail, what happened? I’ve been a paid subscriber for years but as of lately iOS 15, I have not received any notifications until I open the app. Then all of a sudden I have 11 unread emails from days prior. At first I thought it was app corruption so I logged out of my account, deleted the app and reinstalled but it’s still broken. I’ve been waiting patiently for this to be corrected but it’s been months now. When will it be corrected?.Version: 1.15.8

Email without calendar is not for for purpose.I like the security features however there is no calendar functionality for iOS. This means if someone emails you a calendar invite you have to duplicate the info and manually input this into another calendar like gmail. Proton also does not feed into Apple calendar. There is only a desktop browser calendar function. Major flaw. Needs an update ASAP otherwise I will have to migrate back to another platform for business purposes..Version: 4.0.6

Works.... butThis is a fine app, but they need to include an option to choose all email and allow users to mark them as read..Version: 1.11.2

App features lag iOS updates, otherwise an okay mail appThis app does not support the ability to change the notification sound- for me, it is stuck on the “Rebound” tone, and I have been unable to hear that tone in most normal environments (outdoors, in vehicles, etc.) as ambient background noise is enough to drown it out. A quick online search will highlight this as having been an issue for all iOS users for quite some time, and recent updates to the Protonmail app have not addressed the issue. Aside from this issue (kind of a big issue if the audible notification isn’t very audible) the app is a functional email app- it sends & receives email as expected. 3-star review due to the ongoing, unaddressed audible notification issue… those of us that pay for protonmail expect & demand better..Version: 4.10.1

Painfully slow and crashesThis app used to be great a year ago. Now: Takes 10-15 seconds from loading the app to being able to see any mail in the inbox. I used to use the app to send myself emails as a way to take notes, but now this crashes the app. Also whenever I’m writing an email longer than a few paragraphs, the longer I write, the keyboard takes longer and longer to respond, until it ultimately stops altogether - so I have to write emails in the note app first and then copy and paste. It can’t be easy to develop a great app, unfortunately Protonmail on iOS went from great to barely useable on my phone. (iPhone XR).Version: 4.7.0

Protonmail the service, is great. Protonmail the app, not so much. The Protonmail service it self is mostly good. However this app has severe usability problems. I'm writing this as someone who's trying to move away from Gmail towards something more privacy focused. And the Protonmail service is indeed great in that respect. But I wish the developers would try to take some UI/UX lessons from Apple Mail and Gmail. For example, archiving multiple messages is unnecessarily difficult. After selecting one or more messages, the user has to select the Move To Folder option, then touch the Archive folder, then touch Done. In Gmail, archive is a top-level option the user can touch immediately after selecting one or more messages. Am I just completely out of touch to expect that archiving a message is a common action? More common than deleting, tagging or marking as read/unread? Another annoyance is the unreliable behavior when responding to notifications. One would expect that when notified of a new message from the iOS notification tray, the user would be directed to that new message after touching the notification. This happens about 50% of the time. The other half of the time you're often stuck in a loading screen. I've simply started to work around the problem by dismissing the notification, and then manually launching the Protonmail app to find and view the new message. It boggles the mind that what should be a critical user path should be so buggy..Version: 4.2.3

Sending to my pgp contacts unencryptedBe seriously careful sending emails through this client. Currently messages I am sending to a non-ProtonMail PGP-enabled contact via iOS client are being sent *unencrypted*. They send encrypted on the web client without issue and without any special action on my part. In iOS client there is nothing in the UI that indicates to me whether the message will be sent encrypted or not. This is IMO a CRITICAL issue and totally inexcusable for a product that has been around this long. I will update my review if this shockingly terrible bug is resolved, though my trust in the service is massively challenged at this point and I’m considering canceling the 2 years of Pro I just paid for! (I have filed a support ticket for this issue).Version: 1.15.11

Do not use - after 4 years I have realised my mistakeI have been a paying customer of ProtonMail for over 4 years. I will now be leaving them due to dreadful customer service and blocking me from accessing my personal data. Although user interface is not as good as Google / Outlook I was generally happy with the product and felt that the security & privacy justifies the price. However, when my premium subscription automatically renewed in 2022 and unfortunately I was unable to verify payment with my bank due to travel restrictions, rather than remove premium features and shift me to a “free” account.. they have blocked me entirely from the platform and left me unable to access years of personal documents and emails. They are trying to extort me to pay money for a premium service that I have been blocked from using. Proton Mail treatment of a long term paying customer has been incredibly disappointing, and I would strongly encourage you to consider other email hosts..Version: 4.1.1

Privacy and ownershipSo the app has vulns, perhaps it’s just PM’s ownership now, which isn’t Swiss. at all. It’s relatively functional so long as you don’t need your work to be confidential. Journos may want to look a bit further for encrypted, private email apps than this 1, which seems to be riding on its original reputation. btw, I would not go near PM’s accompanying VPN with a 40-foot bargepole. Webmail is still best idea for PM users..Version: 1.12.7

Subscribe is not worth it.More free stuff please. Or one time purchase. Does anybody actually pay monthly for subscriptions to an app?? What a waste of money. Subscribe to any app is such a scam. Unless it providing new media like Spotify or Netflix why the hell would a monthly payment be a good idea???.Version: 3.1.4

Slow and lacking web app functionalityTakes too long to refresh the inbox on a fast internet connection. Almost impossible to use when you have patchy internet. Quite limited in functionality compared with the web app. This app has been around for a few years now with little apparent improvement, while the web app has come a long way. I suggest ProtonMail put some resources into improving the iOS app..Version: 1.15.8

Can No Longer RecommendI recommended this app/service—to many of my friends, based on its public stated credo and no longer can—having done so to THE NICEST PERSON I KNOW—she contacted me saying she—terminated her account with “protonmail” and opened another—and was IMMEDIATELY sent a message (mansplaining) internet ABUSE and that “protonmail” may terminate her account (she did this trying to get an address similar to the one she was replacing from another service). This is on the same day that her long standing email was high-jacked and all her contacts and mail deleted and sent scam spam (hundreds of friends and colleagues received emails—myself included). I recommended protonmail trying to give her a positive approach to a catastrophic occurrence. It’s one thing to only allow one free account-it’s another to not allow an individual to change it (which might be done for a myriad of reason). This ironically occurred on the same day that I was going to subscribe and donate (despite the all too apparent lack of diversity on their team—one token women which explains the heavy handed tone in a first email to a new client). If this is how they communicate with new clients I’m glad I didn’t get in any deeper with them. Like most tech companies they are only great when everything is working, but woe to the person who has an issue and expects to be treated both civilly and as an individual..Version: 1.13.1

Raw thoughtsI had this vpn for years and I also had express vpn before this one but it is more expensive but I don’t know why by itself it will turn off without me manually doing it. At least once a week I look to see if my vpn is connected and the majority of the time it’s not and ALSO need to reconfigure it he settings on my iPhone. I never had this problem where the vpn would turn off by itself without letting u even know. Vpn privacy is problem great I seriously wouldn’t know but I what I do know is if your not connected the privacy doesn’t matter. Express vpn never did that for me or make me passcode to reconnect the vpn every other day. It makes no sense to even have it if it doesn’t run all the time without me babysitting it. I mainly use it for public Wi-Fi within 2-4 days it will turn off and make me log in every week. 2-3 years it has always done this. Will not renew membership even tho it was a great deal but if it doesn’t stay on I rather kick rocks and not even have one… Also it has gotten more frequent turning of on it own..Version: 3.1.4

Problem sending messageI’m not able to send a message from iOS/iPadOS device. I’m getting “Message sending failed. Pleas try again.: can’t decrypt message body” error. I tried logging out, deleting cache and reinstalling the app. Deal breaker for me, starting to look for a different mail provider..Version: 1.15.9

J’aime pas la nouvelle mise à jourAvant on pouvait remettre nos messages lus en messages non lus juste en glissant mais la on doit ouvrir le message et aller sur les trois petits points.Version: 4.11.0

Not ready for prime timeSome UI elements freeze and don’t update until the app is forced to quit and restarts. It also fails to update messages frequently. Needs quite a bit of work..Version: 1.11.2

Password IssuesGiving three stars due to issues I’ve had when I log out and then back in. It nearly always says I’ve got the password incorrect when I have to type it in manually (rather then have my laptop remember it). It tells me the correct password is wrong on the phone app when I’ve logged in on my laptop with that exact password. Previously I have even reset it, which completely screws it as the encrypted emails then can’t be read until you’ve put the original password in! Really what’s the point in a reset? Why don’t you just tell everyone if you forget your password, your account is inaccessible! I understand the need for security but it’s making me want to pull my hair out and doesn’t make me want to purchase the full version at all..Version: 4.2.2

RIP OFF DO NOT BUY THIS TRASH APPI paid for the plus account and although I was charged it never worked. The support staff was dismissive and unhelpful. I decided to seek a refund from apple and just use my 5 accounts (allowed on app) on my laptop. Then out of the blue and for no reason whatsoever they suspended all five accounts. Mind you I use these for business and had several messages I was waiting for responses on. Suffice to say this app and protonmail are both UNRELIABLE. Do not waste your time on this app or service. This app and mail service is at best helpful for shady characters and NOT for legitimate business operations. Unless you want your business’s brand damaged when your accounts disappear. You’ve been warned. In response to your response I did provide the receipt to Protonmail and you ignored it. My 5 accounts were to be used with my PAID account (order ID mkqqyysnf2) on Sep 17th. Trying to pretend otherwise on the app store reviews is disingenuous at best. I reiterate this is NOT a service that is reliable enough to be used for legitimate business purposes..Version: 1.15.9

Uhhh can’t access my email!!I just updated the app and now it crashes every time I try to open it! I have an important message I’m supposed to access right now… but now I can’t get to it!! What am I supposed to do?.Version: 4.9.0

Decent product. Awful company. The product is nice enough, but the way Proton operates is deceptive and borders on fraud. The fact that subscriptions auto renew is buried in the TOS. The the payment screens on the website don’t mention this, and don’t even link to the ToS. I have an account that I have not used in 4 years. They took the money to reactivate my account, but won’t let me log in unless I first pay the 4 years of invoices. There were no renewal or overdue email notifications, and they lock your account after your account is 30 days overdue. So basically Proton I insists on payment for 4 years in which they did not render a service. Support was entirely useless and and just replied with a copy paste response about the TOS. — Reply to dev‘s response: Your support team has wasted enough of my time over that past week. My trust in your company and product is irreparably damaged. Also did you seriously just ask me post my support ticket number in a public review on the App Store? What an epic OpSec fail for a supposedly SeCuREtY / PrIvAcY focused company..Version: 4.6.0

Service gets 5-Stars, The new iOS app 1.5 Stars. The service is fantastic, in fact I am a subscribing customer and an so glad to have shed my spyware e-mail accounts. The iOS app was never great but it was adequate, the latest version released 4/8/22 is horrible. It has this “Conversation” mode “feature” much like the focused inbox thing in Outlook that groups e-mails together from the same sender/subject. I know that many people might love this but I hate it! The app also removes the past messages in the tread from the chronological listing in the inbox so only the latest message shows, I REALLY HATE THIS! Often I go looking for something I know I got 2 weeks ago but someone in the thread sent a message later so the message from person A from 2 weeks ago is missing and you have to open the one from Person B a day ago to find the one from Person A, Aggghhhh! Just give us options! Many people like that style but some don’t. Please give us a way to turn this off. I hate this so much that I’m trying to figure out how to reinstall the old version..Version: 3.1.4

Totally broken highlighting in iOSThis app is totally screwed up on iPad. You cannot highlight a block of text for cutting, copying, or pasting because for some bizarre reason the screen jumps all over the place and you cannot scroll. Never seen such a basic function broken in an app before.Version: 1.11.7

Go anywhere elseI can’t even tell you what using this app is like. Why? Because proton has flagged my account for “violating their terms of service.” My brother, my father, and I all made accounts in order to deal with a consulship appointment. Because we made them at the same time, under advice from a law firm, proton flagged our account. Simple fix right? Wrong. Customer service has been beyond unhelpful. They refuse to read any information we provide and simply refer us to their TOS (which says absolutely nothing about 3 people making account who happen to share the same last name). The best the can offer is “read only” which again, is useless to us as we need to be able to communicate back and forth with the consul using these accounts, and this was a mistake on their end. They simply refuse to do anything about their mistake. DO NOT USE under any circumstances, this company has absolutely horrendous customer service. It has completely put me off any and all services from this company and I will be telling all of my friends, coworkers, and anyone who will listen to take their business else where. Such a simple fix on their end and they will not do it and will not provide any reasoning..Version: 4.6.0

They segregate free usersPutting such a short time limit on users to upgrade their storage to 1GB by finishing an arbitrary checklist is incredibly disrespectful and demanding. People have things going on and many users will not meet the time limit for valid reasons. For ProtonMail to not understand that, shows that it is not the equitable, accepting, inclusive company it claims to be. For example, the Google community would be outraged if Gmail gave all users one month to upgrade and then segregated the father undergoing chemo, the depressed student drowning in school work, and the stressed single mother of three into permanent inferior accounts. The time limit is immoral if it is permanent. It is basically saying “screw your chemo, screw your depression, screw your stress. Give us money for something other accounts get for free because you could not log in for a month.” This policy is honestly disgusting. Companies that treat their users like tools to be used and manipulated do not last. Good companies don’t find ways to divide, segregate, and alienate users into account castes before they’ve even been able to decide if they want to become a paid user. I reached out to customer support but they basically told me it wasn’t their problem and I should have prioritized their useless checklist over something serious that was going on in my life..Version: 3.1.4

Don't download this appWith the introduction of iOS 13, the app crashes often and also often gives a black screen. Today, the mail inside the app wouldnt refresh so it would keep showing one unopened email when all the emails have already been opened. This has been reported to protonmail multiple times but they are just sitting around twiddling their thumbs not taking UX seriously and not making any uodates. I have been a paying Proton Plus member for over a yead and this is unacceptable..Version: 1.15.4

Good security but lacking features and bug support for a paid serviceBeen using the paid service along with their VPN for quite a while now, but have got to the point where I am now looking to migrate over to another service. It’s all well and good having good security but that needs to be backed up with equally good functionality and support. The app is less than overwhelming and is missing basic functionality like swiping to mark as read etc. since iOS 15 there have been a few bugs and my push notifications haven’t worked so I am constantly having to remember to open up the app and refresh it manually to check my emails….inevitability I have missed emails that were fairly important (not good). Tried all their fixes like emptying the cache, which work temporarily but this is a known issue and in my case has not been fixed in well over a month. It would be different if i wasn’t paying for a premium service, but I am and a fair amount considering. I have already downgraded the VPN and expect will migrate the email over to another more practicable, reliable service soon. Very disappointing!.Version: 1.15.6

Reliability is zeroShockingly, I could not log into app, tried dozens of times over many days copying and pasting password from pw manager. Tried website via browser as a last resort and was able to login. Then tried the app again and was able to login. However, this is an indication of how unreliable this service is. There is no guarantee you will ever be able to access your emails again. A 'secure' service that leaves me insecure?.Version: 1.11.16

Text too smallWhy can’t you let us make the text larger? It’s beyond ridiculous how tiny the text is by default compared to every other mail client in the world..Version: 1.15.10

Fix ur search pleaseI have been a paid subscriber for nearly 5 years. And at the start i was just happy that the mails were encrypted, and accepted a pretty poor experience. However with all the revamped ui and new products proton is starting to feel like a competitor to other mail providers. However. It seems like the search functionality gone even worse. I mean i cant search for simple words inside the email body, which is actually quite unacceptable when comparing to other email products. Please fix this..Version: 4.0.0

The APP does NOT workI am so disappointed having to write this review. I’ve given this mail service more than enough chances to address all there issues over the past 12 months+. I first created an account over a year ago (which I deleted at the time due to the same reasons). Both my wife and I have created separate emails this time, using the web browsers, with the intention to use the mobile app. Unfortunately as many others have mentioned in the reviews here both of us have the same issue, when we try to log onto the mobile app on an iPhone it says that either the login or the passwords are incorrect for both of us! Which is not true since we are logging in just fine using the browsers. The issue is clearly with the developers, they need to invest time and resources to identity why potential customers are having this issues since it’s not just us but many people, since there so many of us saying the same thing in the reviews here you can imagine how many more are out there that don’t bother to leave a review. The purpose of this review is to inform the Proton team and hopefully see them fix it. We want to purchase the paying version of the mail but at this stage we can’t. I hope to hear back from someone with a reasonable solution. PS: I’ve accessed all the minimal self help and FAQ sections on the Proton website but nothing works..Version: 4.9.0

Compound feature on the App version, follow up and search function.App on the phone does not compound into thread, so a thread of 50 conversations soon push the other incoming emails down the page Compound feature would be useful for a thread of emails with multiple people replying the same thread Having a button to mark ‘to follow up’ will be useful. When you running a company with millions of things to follow through, soon the incoming emails get rushed downwind becoming difficult to find the ones that needs follow up. Overall, the feeling is not well developed features to manage the emails. Search function is quite poor. Having had my whole company signed up and paid for many users, handling daily emails not as good as outlook and gmail business..Version: 1.15.7

App update regretPlease bring back swipe from left in a email to go back to inbox. I don’t want to swipe between emails. Phones are too big to use one hand and reach the top of the screen to hit the back to inbox button. Or at least make this a setting so the user can choose the functionality..Version: 4.12.1

Account renewal issues and slow supportI wasn’t using proton mail and forgot to disable auto renew. I noticed the renewal charge for another 12 months on my statement so I reached out to proton mail and requested to close the account and refund the recent charge (times are tough). Two weeks later no support other than auto responses from Zendesk. No human response. I Reached out to Amex and created a dispute in order to get some support and refund the charge. Proton then locked my account access because I reached out through Amex. I’m sure the thin veneer to justify is “account security” despite them failing to recognise the open support ticket requesting a refund and now Amex requesting the same. They insist that I “am a user” of their service since because I logged in after the renewal date, which was only to check and ensure what I had already turned off was in fact turned off (auto renew) and to contact support to request a refund, I am an active user - see, the logs prove our logic. I’m sure their is a BS definition of “a user” in their TOS - super, great support PM. Now I am locked out of the PM account and have paid for 12months for a service I do not want to Nir have used. Such a waste of time this is and typical of faceless technology companies. If we interacted face to face im sure your support would be different. What should be a simple matter is now a multi touch point matter. What a waste of my time..Version: 4.2.1

Performance issuesI like proton’s services and have been using them for a while now. UI+UX also deserve praise. However, the mail client in particular, has been demonstrating constant performance issues as of late. Notifications aren’t always prompt and when they are, it fails to load updated inbox content until the app is restarted. Sometimes, it fails to connect at all until restart, even when all other apps have been connecting just fine..Version: 4.10.0

Browser clearly superiorI still find myself having to log in on a web browser to access certain features. Like all their ios apps, it feels bare bones. Then I get emails about all their updates and promotions. Tldr; it works. Not consistent with the original product.Version: 4.10.1

Great Engineering, Poor UIPaid user for over 2 years. Great construction, great premise but in my opinion it’s unusable in iOS without conversation grouping and a number of other design weaknesses currently make it unappealing against all the services it’s competing with. Something as simple as scrolling through emails feels unfamiliar. The scrolling experience is different than anything else in iOS. Typography and use of color is weak and makes things hard on the eyes. Email header design looks shrunken. Organization is lacking support for sub folders. No dark mode. The list goes on and the company is slow to improve so far - albeit I understand their focus on security slows them down and I prefer this but the UX needs to be dramatically improved over the next several years in order to remain relevant. I’ll continue support for the time being with the hopes that will happen but the web beta of v4.0 is not particularly inspiring. At the moment it looks like a new shade of purple against large white spaces again with just some new icons that are placed slightly differently. I think the design would be much much better off if it adhered to the iOS design language. It’s so far from a normal iOS experience that it doesn't accomplish its most basic goal - appeal to the average iPhone user..Version: 1.11.14

Multiple Reinstalls of AppI like using Proton to encrypt my emails, and it works great for me on Mac. However, in the two months I’ve had the app on my iPhone (always keeping iOS updated to the most recent), I have had to delete and reinstall three times. The app stops opening for me. I try to open, it shows it is loading for a couple of seconds, and then crashes. When I reported the issue, I was told to update my iOS, which I had stated in my submission was done before sending the bug report. The alternative offered was to join the Beta. I am not comfortable with participating in Beta testing. Otherwise, there was nothing else to offer. I am not happy with this response as it seems others use the app without this issue and give 5 star ratings. I gave 3 stars because when it works, it’s great. But until this issue I am experiencing is fixed, there will be no improvement in my rating..Version: 1.7.1

Egyptian gibberishIf this app has taught me anything is you cannot trust an encrypted email services or app to keep your most valuable emails safe from malware or viruses! I paid $60 for a encrypted email for all my memories I can never replace ••their answer is you changed you passwords too much! Well that’s kinda impossible bc I write them down, so I don’t use the same password on any app! Today I received an email•••telling me to set my account, by using an old password, to put my app in recovery mode!!!! Which is it??? Proton email your app failed to decrypt my emails transferred from my gmail to folders, and now unless you are an Egyptian archeologist you can’t read your most valuable and trusted emails! DO NOT BUY THIS APP! You will lose your most valuable, treasured memories, only to have customer support blame you!! You want a good encrypted email service, use Tutanota encrypted emails!! Save your money, they will deflect and tell you it’s your fault, and then request you complete putting your accounts into account recovery by going online to change your password! It’s a joke!! Absolutely no help, Customer service is a joke, save yourself $60 and buy Tutanota email services! Absolutely no encryption errors and it’s free! Hope my review saves you money and headaches! Peace, love, and safety from an app that loves to blame customers for their failures!!✌🏼✌🏼✌🏼✌🏼✌🏼.Version: 4.2.3

I just sent your support a messageThere is something very weird and suspicious going on with your app and the actual way it’s acting like it’s ready to be deleted or something like that with a - like this beside it just like when you are deleting apps on your phone.Version: 4.11.0

Half BugSome messages are abruptly cut in half, with the images and text not loading beyond the screen parameters when the message is first opened, i.e. scrolling down the page reveals that the rest of the screen is blank.Version: 1.11.8

Still waiting…….‘The Big Redesign’ my backside! Years on and still - yes - STILL NO DISPLAY SETTINGS!!!! Must have taken you hours to change the colour scheme, all those long nights! You supposedly invested all this time, effort and money in an app which anyone who simply wants to change the font size will just ignore and continue using the browser version. POINTLESS! Though you did claim absolute security then hand over user’s detail to the authorities, so the failed promises shouldn’t really come as a surprise..Version: 3.1.4

GarbageMaybe this app would get more use if it actually worked as intended. PROTONMAIL, FIX YOUR POS APP!.Version: 1.13.1

Great service but unstable appI’ve been using proton mail for over a year now, the web is great and until a few months ago the app has been great too, but recently it’s been crashing when opening certain emails, and also opening emails from notifications. Really frustrating. I reported a bug but was told by support I had to submit it to for testing myself? Not a good process and not something I can be bothered with..Version: 4.1.1

Too basic and no integration with calendarI am a paying user for quite sometime now and unfortunately I haven’t seen this app evolving that much. Features are still to basic, there is no integration with other proton services (imagine you receive a calendar invite and can’t accept it on mobile). The search box isn’t the smartest as well. Security still top notch but I wish the overall app was better.Version: 4.0.1

It’s become worse…Firstly, I love the ProtonMail service, and although the old app was dated and looked awful, it worked really well for what it needed to do. Since Proton have updated the app, I’m constantly being automatically logged-out at the worst possible times (no other email app does that, so why does Proton need to?). I would like to see certain things fixed before I can even begin to think about leaving a positive review, I may have to switch email providers as I can’t handle constantly being logged out when I need to use my service (that might I add, I pay for the privilege of using)..Version: 3.1.4

Great security but….I’ve been using this app as my main email for years and it’s been good but over the past six months or so there’s been too many issues which they never seem to resolve. No push notifications as an example. The customer service is lacking. Another example being I was offered more storage if I answered four questions but this didn’t work. Having taken the trouble to explain this in a ticket I was told all I have to do is answer the four questions and the upgrade would be applied. Well thanks for telling me what I already knew. It’s very frustrating when you just get fobbed off by a company. It’s a shame as I love it for the security..Version: 1.15.10

It's okayGenerally good. However, it has been plagued by a bug that applies swipe actions to the wrong message. This has been present for months, and despite supposed fixes it is still a constant annoyance..Version: 1.15.11

Feeling let downI first got introduced to this app by a friend and all was good and smooth till the last few updates ago I would only get notifications of new emails then when I went to view them they were blank and I forwarded to my old email to see if that solved it and it did so I contacted support about it and they told me it was a known issue and that they were solving it in the next update so I waited and waited for update months have gone on now (after a few updates) the problem has never been resolved I feel let down massively after being assured that the problem would be addressed and fixed in the next update, I feel let down by support received from them and I think it time to find a new service..Version: 4.0.5

Don’t bother.Encrypted email sounds cool and all, until you realise you can’t forward emails if you wish to change providers. Also, this app is awfully designed. Unless you work for CSIRO or some other research body where you need to keep communications safe from corporate espionage, there is absolutely no reason to put up with this app’s awful UI..Version: 4.0.7

Set up impossibleKeeps cycling to verification. Waste of time.Version: 4.9.0

No more trust after giving away IP addressAfter reading that you guys complied with Swiss laws and gave away that climate activist’s IP address to authorities, I can no longer place any trust with you guys and immediately and effectively removing your app..Version: 1.15.4

Great services, app needs workVery pleased with the email and vpn services. Recently bought a visionary plan to try out a year in hopes of migrating all my domains emails under proton. While the web email works perfect and the iOS apps function ok, I have a big qualm with the UI of the app for iOS. The left column sidebar has this huge separate area, that does not appear to be moveable or collapsible, that lists link to settings, bug reporting, log out, and more. This utility section separates the main mail inbox, trash, archive, etc., from the user designated folders and labels, thus requiring scrolling past the utility section to see folders. It’s an annoyance, folders should be with folders. You can see what I’m talking about in the 3rd preview pic. On the web based, this is not the case, and user creates folders & labels are right under main inbox, trash, etc. this is the way it should be, folders in the mailbox section. I really wish this would be fixed to be either the same layout as web based, or maybe user configurable. Rarely do I need settings or bug reporting, but I use folders and labels multiple times a day for different emails and organizing, and the current app makes this not very cohesive layout. Maybe nit picky, but I am not sure I’d be able to deal with moving all my emails to the service if the app keeps this layout. I’d be bummed as proton supports folders and labels for emails, which I love..Version: 1.11.4

Notification loading problemI click on notifications and the email doesn’t load. Often i have to reopen the app a couple times for it to work..Version: 4.11.0

Price too highI trust Proton and it is a good product but refuse to pay $84 Canadian for email service. Keep looking for alternative..Version: 1.15.4

Non-Techies Should Steer ClearProtonmail is great, until there's a problem. If you're not savvy about encryption and such, it can be daunting, especially since the fix options they provide may not work for you, may even make things worse. It happened to me. Customer support does respond, and seems to care, but problems don't necessarily go away. Their suggestions aren't helpful when they keep recommending things that have already been explained to them more than once can't be done, for various reasons, like using a previous password when I didn't have one, even though they have copies of earlier correspondence from writing back and forth about the issue. Some suggestions don't make sense. For example, I was having trouble with their iPhone app; so, they want me to do something with nonexistent files on my computer's hard drive???.Version: 1.15.4

Long time paying customerLatest update pretty much broke the application as far as I’m concerned. 1) time to email view is insanely long when opening app, especially if you have new mail 2) bugs out when changing views within app (I just want to quickly dismiss/tag as read a single email) 3) double notifications per email, that stay even if email is read 4) recent incident error messages indicated that the email client was ddosing your backend with retry requests Won’t comment on new UI view - as it’s subjective. Workflows that I care about the most at this point in time: - Can check email quickly (time to email) - Can search email quickly after opening (UI facilicates that) - Can mark emails read/unread, delete emails quickly (first view should facilitate this interaction) - Can dismiss notifications quickly (no double notif per single email) Now the pre-update version was already sluggish. Post update is just broken. I can recommend you a software QE/QA company, because it looks you might really use one..Version: 3.1.4

Notifications not working properly since iOS 15Surprise when you click on the app and find new unread emails. No badges, no banners and everything on the users end set correctly for notifications to appear. Sent a bug report, they said they know about it, and months later, no fix..Version: 1.15.10

Good but needs workIt’s a good basic email app. And the secure email transport is excellent, which is the main purpose of using it. The app needs some attention from a designer. Contrast and font size are both too low to be usable. Labels in custom folders are illegible and appear to be greyed out even when they’re not. Some emails are rendered so small they can’t be read. Feels like the developers spend a lot of time viewing the app on a simulator and not a real device, because this doesn’t come close to any of the Apple design recommendations..Version: 1.12.5

Great email service, buggy iOS appI’ve been on a paid plan for several months and highly recommend ProtonMail, the service, in general. It does what it’s supposed to do, and the privacy focus is first rate. However, this iOS app suffers from two defects— one an actual security risk if unnoticed by a user, and one merely annoying. The serious defect is in the PIN/TouchID feature to lock the app. I use the PIN option (leaving TouchID disabled) and it usually works well enough, but from time to time I’ll open the app and it immediately shows my Inbox without a PIN. I contacted ProtonMail support about this, and was asked if the problem occurred after an app update. I couldn’t determine that, as I have my phone set to auto-update apps. The only workaround is to logout of the app entirely. My other apps with PIN lock features have maintained that setting for years, across major app upgrades. The annoying defect, as others have noted, is the lack of notification synchronization across devices with ProtonMail apps logged into the same account. If I read a new email message on one device, the badge on the other device’s app icon still indicates the unread message. This is by no means a deal breaker, but it should be fixed for a polished experience..Version: 1.13.1

Encrypted but primitiveThe good: secure end-to-end encrypted email. Pay a modest fee for all the features (or pay google with your private data). The bad: ancient iOS app interface and a developer who does not appear to be listening to users - majority of feature requests have been in the queue for *years*, with no progress. Basic email filtering (read/unread); threaded conversation view, snooze or flag emails, to name but a few. Poor show..Version: 1.14.1

Still no email threads????ProtonMail is the only email client I’ve used that doesn’t have an option to thread emails of the same subject and/or from the same sender. If you’re having a conversation with someone and want to find a precious message, you have to scroll through ALL of your inbox and manually search for the email. If you receive frequent emails on the same subject, like updates on a specific forum, your inbox will be flooded. Instead of having one email chain, you’ll have dozens of emails of the same subject and from the same sender crowding up your inbox. And it will be difficult to pick out any important emails. It’s ridiculous that the ProtonMail developers haven’t fixed this problem. Even tiny obscure email clients with a single developer have better UI, and they at least respond to complaints. ProtonMail is clearly not interested in addressing the problem. Update May 2021: I originally wrote this review about a year ago, and I received a response that email grouping was in the works and would be implemented in a future update. Well, a year later, ProtonMail still doesn’t have the very basic, essential feature that every other mail service has. The word “feature” doesn’t even sound right. Is grouping text messages by contact really a “feature” on my iPhone? No, it’s expected. There’s not a phone on the market where you have to scroll through all of your text messages to pick out individual replies to read a conversation with someone..Version: 1.14.1

Needs better appearance optionsI like the security of ProtonMail, but the lack of appearance options is really annoying. Add features to allow a more customized look in the app and it will take off. As someone who has switched over from gmail the app looks bland and difficult to navigate like communist Russia that I grew up in. Please sort this ASAP as it is not functional to people who run business and deal with a lot of emails daily..Version: 1.12.4

No access to photo library stillIve had Proton mail for 22 months now and have the premium, paid for service and while its good from a security and privacy stand point, it lacks the ability to attach photographs from the photo library (on iPhone 7). While some may see this as a minor annoyance, for me its a critical element of an electronic mail service. I’ll be considering other options if this isn't resolved in the near future..Version: 1.11.2

RedesignI’ll come back to this review in a week because it deserves a second chance but right off the hop I’m not enjoying this update. It feels like we went from a functional mail app that didn’t need a redesign to something that looks like it was designed for looks with bad tastes and not functionality. There’s a reason why the stock iOS email app is the most popular, you don’t see apple trying to redesign the email app.. you should take note. Now I’m faced with trying to deal with this new ugly design or consider moving apps. You guys could of at least left the old style as an option.. not happy..Version: 3.1.2

Privacy at the expense of user experienceThis app has a long way to go from a user experience stand point. Reply and forward buttons are hard to find. Adding attachments fails frequently. Deleted emails still appear in list..Version: 3.1.6

They don’t fix anything....ever! Update: Pure garbage, look elsewhere for reliable email!Update: Jan 2023 — it is useless now with each and every new update. It crashes alllll the time or takes fooooorrreevverrrr to load each and every email, particularly any email with an image and always with more than one image (so like every email you’ll ever get, as this isn’t the 90’s!!)...if they even load, or even load more than just the top tiny portion...and then crash again! Some email lists I’m signed up with I’ll never again see as they should be because PM blocks images from loading and you can’t shut off the “feature” on the app. Absolutely none of the previous issues from several years are fixed, and as frequently stated, they keep adding newer “features” that just make PM a bag of $#!¥! You can’t have Proton VPN on at the same time or good luck even getting a single email open and loaded. And of course telling support back when the crashing was added to the mix of nonstop issues several updates back, their response was that they’d get around to fixing it in a future update. And their initial support was to say to update to the newest version after I’d already stated it was acting like that with the newest update! Do they not actually read anything and just go in thinking you’re a raging moron, when really it just makes them look like raging morons??! And so, as usual, no “fixes” have happened yet and it’s already been several months and updates later with nothing to show for it, but worse and worse functioning. But again they NEVER fix anything they break, so just find a more reliable email provider and save yourself A TON of time and stress!! Be thankful you don’t have to figure out how to migrate everything away from them because migrating to them was broken as well! Response to Developer’s most recent response: Hahahah that’s so laughable! You are not working hard at fixing jack! I’ve contacted Report a Bug MANY, many times over several years, to which your support people are even more laughable. They do not care, as I outlined originally! They’ve not fixed a single thing, especially the sending/receiving issues. Update: After 3 or so recent updates, the app continues to crash frequently, boots you out, so you have to sign in again. And absolutely nothing from the previous review has been fixed to date with the app, at least for Apple!!! They keep creating new features that don’t work, and instead of fixing everything else. Beware because more and more places don’t seem to accept Proton Mail so your emails won’t get through and contact pages will send your inquiries to their junk mail or block you altogether! Previous Review: I’ve told them how with the new overhaul is incredibly easy to accidentally Unsubscribe from your email lists based on the stupid location they put the button (more like a bar across the top of your email, right under the contact info), no confirm Unsubscribe, nothing!!! Some you’ll know about because the odd email list will email you one last time to confirm, and many you won’t know about. They don’t care!! The screen constantly flashes when you go to respond or compose an email also. Many emails, in the new thread or not, when you open won’t show the actual message, and some take time to appear, while others you have to hit Reply (whether you were going to or not) in order to see what was written!! WTH?! Sudden inundation of Spam mail that you CAN’T delete at all in the app version. They know about it, but I see haven’t even bothered to fix it for the newest update. They tell you to go sign in online and delete it from there. I rarely ever go Spam before and now don’t know why now. Etc. But then they’ve never cared about all of the issues, as there are maaaaannnnnnyyyyy things that still don’t work or were never fixed. The primary one that is serious is not receiving emails from people or lists that are in your White list. They randomly get blocked somehow or can’t get through for long periods of time. I’ve tried resigning up to some lists to see if that works, but nope, or it’ll let one email through and then never again!! The same goes for emailing out, where less randomly people don’t receive your emails at all. Also, using contact forms on websites and leaving your email addy usually means you’ll never hear back. It’s like PM is blocked and blocks its users from receiving and sending email...the purpose of it. Could be awesome if it worked and didn’t create nightmares..Version: 4.2.3

Hate new brandingWould continue using but your upgrade is terrible. Great new streamlined features I’m sure, but one major reason I chose your service was the dark and discrete look. Will be choosing a different service now due to this ugly purple and white look. So disappointed..Version: 4.0.0

1 free emailWhat’s the point of allowing only 1 free email to be added to the app? It’s such a useless limitation. No other mailing app limits the number of emails you can add..Version: 4.8.1

New version is lousy! They should add a way to rearrange the order of e-mails. From newest (in top) to oldest (at the bottom). And they should make it easier to find the setting to ungroup e-mails. They call it “conversation setting,” pretty much other providers call it “group setting.” I find Proton to be very expensive compared to other private e-mail services. Proton starts at 52 dollars per year right now. Compare that to Tutanota which is a great service for only 13 and change dollars per year. Tutanota is based in Germany and they take privacy serious. With end to end encryption and even a free encrypted calendar. For the price of one Proton basic account I could have four at Tutanota. I don't work for Tutanota or benefit from anyone switching over. I am just a person who is tired of companies milking me for evey penny they can to fatten their greed wallets why not providing a service that is not or not much better than others that cost less..Version: 3.1.4

Deactivated accountsI thought this was a secure email domain. It turns out that if youre not a paying customer they will deactivate your account if you have not entered your password within 3 months, and with no notice. Even if you access it frequently, they will deactivate your email. Also will deactivate your email if you have more than one free email. Protonmail is probably a great email service if you pay. WARNING DO NOT USE FREE SERVICE!!! Ps I was going to upgrade, and pay for VPN and dual account subscription after trying it out, but then I couldn't as they had deactivated my email...never did I think this was possible, and I sent my most important mail to is now GONE!!.Version: 4.11.0
