Word of the Day・English Vocab for Negative User Reviews

Subscription based appThey want a ridiculous amount of money to actually use this app.Version: 5.0

UggggghhhhhToo many, too long adds. Also, you have to pay??? Are you kidding me? I have to pay to sit here and watch adds and sometimes listen to some random voice that will tell me some random word that I’m probably never going to use. This app was a good idea but with bad execution. Would not recommend..Version: 6.3

No longer works for free usersEvery time you click there’s a an ad now for free users, ok, I get that they need to make some money, that’s fine. But when you clear that ad it then tries to make you buy a subscription to go ad free and the little “x” in the top right corner to come off it rarely (if ever) works, making the app completely useless for me as a free user. For this reason, I’ve given 1 star and have uninstalled the app as this unusable issue for free users (on iOS at least) has been going for a few months or so now. Despite iOS being up to date and having uninstalled and reinstalled app multiple times to see if it fixed anything (it did not). However, when the app actually worked well for free users I would have given it 4 maybe 5 stars. Obviously they need to make money and cover costs, I’d just have liked the ability to click off the subscription page to use the free version..Version: 3.9

WhyUpdate is weird and clustered. Hate the change to the widget where the focus is not the word.Version: 8.0

Extremely disappointing updateI used to love this app. Informative as I love learning new words. The widget was great as I could see it multiple times a day so it helped me recall the word and let it sink in rather than just seeing it once. Now I have to check in every day, tap a bunch of times just to see the word, the widget doesn’t work and if I miss a day I have to pay premium to see it? You want my money because I was too sick to open my phone and get the dang word for the day? Utterly ridiculous and I am now more frustrated than excited using the app. Hoping you change back and stop being so desperate for money because it’s absolutely not worth it to me. This update made everything much worse..Version: 8.0

Words Are Too EasyI haven’t had that much trouble with ads, but I’m also not learning very much. The words are generally too basic, with a few random ones thrown in that haven’t been used in a century. I’ve had the app for over a month and I think I’ve learned about three new words. I wish there was a more advanced version..Version: 7.1

Glitchy and annoyingUsed to enjoy this app a lot before it started offering a paid subscription. Now it is just full of glitches. Having to watch an ad is bad enough but then trying to click on a little cross to reveal the word causes issues and just hangs. So annoying. I also don’t find some of the examples of words used in a sentence very clear. Some of them I find rather odd, as I don’t feel they use a word in its correct context. I am not saying every example is this way, but there have been enough that colleagues and I have had discussions about why it is not useful or helpful and could possibly lead to misunderstandings of what a word means. Quite frankly, I find it gimmicky, sometimes incorrect and always glitchy. Which is why I will now be deleting it. Just not worth the annoyance..Version: 8.4.12

Decent app, entry-level vocabularyI downloaded this app thinking it would be a fun way to stay sharp and learn new words, and while it does function as advertised, it’s a little underwhelming. The daily words are usually pretty basic, and most of the ones I’ve encountered over the two-ish months I’ve had the app are already part of my vocabulary. That said, it provides a decent refresher for adults, and would be good for younger individuals or anyone who feels they need to master some basics before moving on to more obscure words. There is a dictionary portion as well, which I’ve found more helpful than the word-a-day function when it comes to discovering unrecognized words. Having to flip through the dictionary kind of defeats the purpose of the app, at least for me, but it’s nice to have it included..Version: 2.1

JunkTOO MANY ADS. Do NOT Download. Ads all the time. Devs should feel like crap for making such a worthless app. 🤬🤬🤬.Version: 4.8

Used to be brilliant, advertising totally ruining itReally loved this apps, although nothing more than flipping through randomly a dictionary, value was it was nicely selected words. Now I’m not against ads for free apps but here it’s really invasive and becoming totally unusable since spending more time being forced to see an ad than on the apps itself.. now do you want to spend this amount of time to watch an ad.... answer is no; do you want to pay a monthly fee/subscription to use this app...no. So with deep, deep regret deleting it and moving on..Version: 3.9

UnhappyFirst you ask me for a “Lifetime Subscription” which I paid ?stupidly assuming that it was a one-off payment. Then you insist on my paying an annual payment as well, so I deleted the App immediately having been unable to use it. I think this is SPURIOUS ADVERTISING!!! I would be very grateful if you would stop/return my initial payment. Thank you!!!.Version: 6.6

Frustrating but otherwise goodWhen I got this app I was hoping to expand my vocabulary. I already speak English and thought this would be a fun way to learn new words. The problem that frustrated me is that most of the words that were “word of the day” I knew, so it was not much of a vocabulary expansion. I did enjoy the set up of this app though. I liked how you could save words that you liked and also that there was a master list of words. I wish they used more ‘odd’ or ‘rare’ words as the word of the day. I did find a bunch of new words in the master list but it lacked the fun “learn one new word a day” aspect that I thought I was going to get. All in all this is a good app but I would not recommend it for people looking for a fun way to learn new words or expand their vocabulary..Version: 2.1

Super coolThe concept, design and UI is amazing. The free version is very limited, though. And it doesn’t help that a lot of the words are weird specific medical terms that I will never use. I’d love to get the paid version but $12 a month is absolutely insane. Like, kind of criminal..Version: 8.3.6

I used to love this app.I’ve had this app for years and up until the last several months have thoroughly enjoyed it. Of late, revenue is obviously much more important than the user’s experience. All free apps have ads. I get it but for some reason these guys seem militant about it. The ads are ridiculously long and cannot be bypassed. The ads come on at maximum volume which is very imposing and even embarrassing in a quiet environment. It’s not even possible to open the app and look at the word of the day without getting blasted with an ad longer than I would ordinarily take to enjoy and discover a new word. It’s not evenKratos possible to open the app and go to settings without even that being loudly and rudely interrupted. I pay for many apps that are worth having and that make it feel like I at least have a choice to upgrade or deal with a reasonable barrage of ads. This one for some reason makes the entire experience feel like I’m being railroaded into paying or having my experience intentionally ruined. Regretfully, I have tolerated this too long and will be deleting the app and finding one that is a little less aggressive in their pursuit of income..Version: 5.3

All in all greatJust one bug is I always get 2 notifications, one for today’s word, then one for yesterdays word two hours later.Version: 3.4

LackingWhen I came across this app I was excited about learning a new word every day, however, the amount of information I’m gleaning is VERY limited. Besides the definition, each word is used in a sentence and you can hear its pronunciation, but that’s about as far as it goes. Oh...how can I forget...you can select a dialect. The options are: USA, UK, Australian, Canadian (Huh??? It sounds exactly like the USA version to me), and Indian. *Random unimportant fact: The female USA voice sounds like she just inhaled an entire helium balloon so I instead switched to the male. He’s much more pleasing to my ear. But I want more information about each word. How about synonyms, antonyms, word origin, alternative definitions, or first known use? Is it trying to be different than a dictionary? I think so. And the weirdest part is there’s a link to Google’s definition of the word. If I wanted Google’s definition I’D GO TO GOOGLE!!! Overall, it’s underwhelming..Version: 2.1

Not even sensibleJust a money grab actually. Certainly not something useful.Version: 6.9

Ads with subscriptionI paid for a subscription so I can use the app ad free, I can’t finish a puzzle without 2 or 3 ads popping up. Can’t find a way to contact the developers so I’ll be canceling my subscription if this is not resolved soon..Version: 4.8

Uninstalled immediately after initial setupI understand funding the app and pay for many apps that I enjoy because I hate ads and I love supporting apps by paying directly. However, from a UX/UI standpoint I have issues. After the initial set up, I was immediately asked to pay for the app before ever even seeing what it looks like to use. It included an annoying countdown offering 50% off, and I could let that part slide even though in my opinion it gives off scammy vibes anytime I see that. After closing the “offer” so I could try actually using the app, I was only able to see the home screen for a millisecond, not even enough time to read the word of the day much less the definition, before ANOTHER pop up asking me to pay for the app. Seriously? I haven’t even used it yet! How could I possibly know if I want to pay for it? Deleted the app and I will not reinstall. There are other word of the day style apps and services; I will continue my search..Version: 6.8

Not very complexI like the concept and tried the trial premium version but I won’t subscribe because the issue I have is that no matter what words I select on setup, the words that come up every day are still very common and I haven’t yet come across one I didn’t know - and it’s been a few weeks. Something to consider would be having a difficulty setting for the premium version - that’s something I’d pay for..Version: 6.3

Not worth itI don’t know why I paid for this. The UI and marketing were great. The app itself is less than impressive. Use word of the day screensaver instead. The paid for version is a waste of money if I’ve ever seen one..Version: 8.3.1

Reduce adsThe ads are so bad with this app it is virtually unusable. You can’t even open the app without getting stuck in a long ad that you don’t have the option of exiting. Dealing with some ads for a free version is understandable but this is just ridiculous..Version: 6.1

Won’t openLooked like a great app so I bought it, worked well for all of two weeks and now won’t open at all - homescreen and crash, and it’s fully updated. I’ve an older iPhone so maybe that’s it, but then this thing definitely needs updating before you try to buy it. No means of contacting support either now..Version: 5.3

Won’t let you skip out of adsI paid for the subscription, but it still won’t let me skip ads and I’d have to restart the app sometimes. I can’t even look at the word sometimes. Not worth the money imo.Version: 5.9

This app have problems with notifications and page loadingI recently purchased the premium subscription but got very disappointed after I notice that notifications do not appear properly even after all buttons checked and set up in general settings. When I am trying to check popular words the page doesn’t load and the whole app freezes. Dear developers please fix this issues since it’s getting very frustrating to deal with this all the time. Thank you. Following the reply from developer I did as it stated. However after reinstalling the app and login with my subscription ALL MY SAVED WORDS GOT LOST. Can you please advise regarding this issue? It’s very frustrating to keep having issues with this app and paying premium subscription. Thank you.Version: 7.2

Ad of the day (BETTER OFF WITH A DICTIONARY)You are better off reading a dictionary with much better definitions, examples and sometimes the origin of the word. Plus there’s no ads that pop up after each word.Version: 5.4

SuggestionThe amount of ads in this is laughable. Instead of forcing ads whenever users are trying to achieve the very reason they downloaded the app (trying to read the definition of words) and frustrating them to the point that they delete the app, why not give a little to get a little? For example, offer the possibility to customize our app (like different fonts, backgrounds, etc), but they are earned through in-app currency (gold coins, diamonds, etc). The user then has the opportunity to watch ads to earn that currency or use real money to pay for the currency. For now, I’m deleting. I’d rather use the word of the day widget offered by Dictionary (the widget is only available in the side menu, the page that is shown when you get to your main home page and swipe left), but it’s better than dealing with the constant ads..Version: 6.2

Muy Bueno Pero….:La aplicación definitivamente provee de un vocabulario y antecedentes lingüísticos de palabras más inusuales o cultas , sin embargo suele regularmente bloquearse la aplicación y hay que reiniciar la aplicación, es un problema que sucede regularmente, por lo demás es buena, da la sensación de que no les importa mantener su operación después de vendida.Version: 8.4.2

Invasive ads ruin the appWhen you go to view the word of the day you can’t get half way through until a full screen 30 second ad is forced on the screen. You can’t even look at the word of the day without an ad interrupting you. Minimal or banner ads are fine, this is unacceptable and I have to delete. There must be better alternatives..Version: 6.6

So disappointedI loved this app so much. I loved how I always had this little learning device that I carry around with me everywhere. It was simple and never too complicated. But then it started to update...a lot. I knew this app was finally starting to kick off, and I was happy it was getting the attention it deserves. But god, what the hell was it with the ads? Ads come up every forking five seconds! How do you expect me to even finish reading the definition of the word you notify me to check out everyday? Your motives obviously show little care in actually enhancing one’s vocabulary, but rather finding a pathway to earn more money. It hurts writing this down, but I’m hoping that with this you’ll cut down the number of ads that pop up. How about just one every two minutes? That’s reasonable. Not one for every five seconds. In the meantime, I’ll be turning off notifications for this app specifically and being on the look out for new updates, hoping one of them includes less ads. I understand you need some way to earn money, but seriously though, less people will probably delete this. I have much love for this app, so please do your part at making sure the people who download this app see it as a learning tool. A tool doesn’t force you to do things..Version: 4.9

Insane amount of AdsThis will crash ur phone - don’t get it there r other better ones.Version: 6.9

You guys ruined the app.I have had this app for 4 years. I am finally deleting it because it has been ruined. Years ago the app was simple, fun, and easy. You open up the app and there's your word of the day. No subscriptions begging you to waste money on. No "streaks". No punishing you for words you missed (locking them behind a paywall). No word puzzles. No vocabulary score. No collections. It was straight to the point, because let's face it do you really need all of that? It's just a dang word. I am particularly frustrated at how words are blocked if you missed them. My advice for anyone who reads this— download the Merriam-Webster dictionary, it will have a free, easy word of the day that will even tell you about its history. Or you could just search online instead of dealing with this unnecessarily complicated app :|.Version: 8.4.1

AdsToo many ads for a premium membership.Version: 4.8

AwesomeGreat App besides the annoying adverts.Version: 1.9

First impressions countI’ve had this app for three days. My words have been: Quittance, Slovenly, Unhinge With the example sentences for the last two I am frustrated to see that both relate to women. Maybe I just got unlucky to have two negative words back to back, that both just so happened to use a slovenly woman and a woman becoming potentially unhinged as the examples. Please can some thought be put into this. There’s a cultural battle on and it doesn’t help having outdated stereotypes reinforced everywhere you look, no matter how unintentionally.Version: 3.0

Are u kidding meThey changed EVERYTHING!!!! They changed all of it, it was perfect in every way and so calming. It had word searches a nice pallet of colour and was calming! You could see the word of the day and it had all my favourite words I had saved from YEARS of using the app. Totally wiped none of my words where saved in the update and you can’t even see the daily word in the widget. I loved this app and they ruined it completely don’t get it ever they’d re the worst..Version: 8.0

Bad examplesSome of the examples used to illustrate the daily word in a sentence are just terrible - long-winded, ambiguous, and end up giving you less certainty about how the word should and could be used. Furthermore, sometimes the definitions themselves are wrong... This is not always the case, but sometimes I’m frustrated as the examples can be so convoluted! This is not difficult to fix, whoever is pulling the gears behind the scene needs to be fired or re-trained.Version: 4.0

Paid for subscription for app, crashes constantlyCrashes whenever I favourite a word or try to open collections. Terrible.Version: 8.4.8

Don’t even bother! You get probably 5 seconds to look at the word, then the Ads kick in. You can’t skip or bypass them, and they keep going on and on... The only way to stop the Ads is to kill the app. We understand free apps need Ads for support, but this one has gone so far and rendered itself totally unusable..Version: 4.8

Honest feedback please read Notifications are really annoyingThis app would get 5 stars from me, but it’s really irritating how I need to open the app to see a words definition. If this app pushed me notifications with the definition of the word of the day so I didn’t need to open the app at all, I would give it 5 stars I want to be able to daily see a word as it’s inspiring but I’m not about to open the app up. Also push notifications would encourage words to be easily memorised as they pop up like texts. Please do something about this. It doesn’t make sense not to include the definition in the notification otherwise great app but until fixed 1 star.Version: 5.9

Too many adsEvery time I want to view the word of the day a 30 second unskipable ad pops up before I can read the definition. I dont mind ads but this developer is way too greedy about them..Version: 5.9

Too many addsInitially I thought this app was useful and would help grow my vocabulary but every time you press any button on the app an ad comes on and it gets annoying so it’s just an annoying app with too many adds so I deleted it and it’s not worth downloading unless you want to see a load of adds or spend money to get rid of them :).Version: 7.6

Ads make this infuriating to useI have never written an app review before, but I find it necessary to share how frustrating this one is: I wanted to like this app. The interface is decent. But within 5 seconds of opening the app to see the word of the day, an ad covers the screen and you have to wait. There isn’t time to read the definition, much less hear the pronunciation before you’re forced to wait for an ad to run its time. This makes it worse than useless because you can see it’s got good content, but that flaw makes it absolutely infuriating to use. Otherwise, the word selection is lacking. I’m finding that so many of these words are obscure and not something one might ever use in daily or even semi-frequent life. I understand not every word will be applicable to everyone’s vocabulary use, perhaps just as interesting information. But that flaw seems like it defeats the purpose of the exercise. I kept the app for a few weeks, hoping it could redeem itself, but it’s clear that unless you’re willing to pay for a subscription (which is a waste of money, in my opinion, when I could try any other app for better quality), this is not worth even downloading..Version: 3.9

Unreliable & inaccurate.I downloaded this with the intention on increasing my vocabulary. A little over a week in & I have now deleted it. A few times now when I have listened to the words it has given, the pronunciation is completely off. Even I knew when the word wasn’t being said correctly. This app will just end up teaching people wrong pronunciations. The definitions seem fairly reliable, but not the sounds..Version: 2.0

Horrible updateThis app used to be great, but then this new update came along and ruined everything. It’s overcomplicated now and I can’t open my favourite words folder without the app crashing..Version: 8.3.1

Awful if you don’t have premiumEverytime I go on it it advertises premium so much that I have to click off it about 3 times (premium which is a monthly payment btw not just a one time payment) also as soon as you click off it an advertisement plays. I reckon this app would be good if you have premium but I’m sorry I’m not paying money every month/week just for it to tell me one new word a day it’s silly.Version: 6.5

Always demanding upgradesConstantly nagging and throwing-up barriers to workflow, to upgrade. Creates a very poor user experience at entry level, and deters buying higher levels - will they just keep nagging and interrupting workflow?.Version: 8.3.5

Lack of accessibilityI’d like to be able to see my word of the day in my home screen. It’s always seemed a little cheeky to notify me of my word of the day without showing it to me. Alas, it’s only downfall, but it has however lead to me deleting word of the day in favour of another vocabulary app that does offer lock screen words with definitions and a contextual example..Version: 4.9

A once great app now ruined. It’s a pity because this used to be one of my favourite apps to just learn new words. It’s been completely changed to make it gamify and make it a chore to even uncover a single word and pressure you into upgrading to premium and in its current format has lost all its value for me. I’m going to find another app that actually does what it claims..Version: 8.4.8

I love it! *NEW*Great app but there is always room for improvement! I have some ideas that could make this app so much better! Idea 1: When looking on favourites i forget what word means what so if you could put the definition underneath the word that would make it easier for me! Idea 2: enable a place where you can search for meanings instead of words because this would make it easier to find some of the words. Idea 3: When you are on the main book thing under the definition and example sentence, please add a 3 or 4 words that mean the same this would make it even easier to understand the context of the word! This is an amazing app and i definitely recommend it to anyone who is a writer and needs to extend their vocabulary it's also great if you just want to learn a new word every day please consider my ideas and add them into the app for a 5 star review and a recommendation to all my friends! ADDED 23RD MAY: I love the new wordsearch thing! It makes it so much more fun! It's a great way to practice spelling the words you know! I think, to make it even better than this app always is, you should add a small quiz at the end of the wordsearch quizzing you on what the words from the wordsearch mean! Also, how about adding a crossword too? I absolutely love this app and recommended it to all my friends! Please can you consider adding my new ideas as well as my old ones. Waiting for your reply, thanks!.Version: 4.0

The widget is brokenWas going to subscribe but then noticed that the widget is broken, as it never takes you to the word that it’s displaying. 😒.Version: 7.1

Regarding the Aug 5th UpdateI was really enjoying this app until this new update. I liked the word searches, but I can do without them. What I miss is being able to look up a word and stash it, not just seeing the words that were selected for me. If I came across a new and interesting word “in the wild,” I was able to add it to my list! Not anymore. Plus, this update messed with the widget I had that showed me the word of the day without opening the app. I get that developers want people to open the app, but the thing is - seeing the word on my screen is what GOT me to open the app (to see the definition). I liked the visual incentive of being curious about the word, rather than having just another notification, which I’ll probably ignore. To be honest, I’m less likely to seek out and open the app now. The update has some promising features such as illustrations and having words tailored to the user’s vocabulary level and I’d like to see these features incorporated into a version of the app that addresses the problems listed above..Version: 8.0

Too many adsThis app is horrible. The second you open the notification it gives you about 3 seconds or less to read the definition before a 10 second ad appears..Version: 6.1

Too many ads. Download Merriam-Webster instead! As cliche and trite as it may be, I don’t leave reviews for things but I had to for this app because the in-app ads are That irritating and numerous. Do yourself a favour and download the Merriam-Webster app, they have word-of-the-day too and no ads!!.Version: 4.8

Cash grabI’m really disappointed with the complete overhaul of this app. Previously a user could just see that day’s word but now it’s locked behind a patronising scratch card game, and the setting to turn that off is behind a paywall of £8.99 a month. I don’t understand this recent fad to turn everything into a subscription money making scheme. Knowledge should be free. You shouldn’t have to pay to educate and improve yourself, especially with something as fundamental and intrinsic as our language. It’s really disappointing and stops those who don’t have £36 spare from engaging with the content beyond an infantilising game. As such, I’ve deleted the app and will find an alternative. Or just use dictionary (dot) com. There is no shortage of information sources that don’t charge to use them. EDIT: I have been offered by the developers to have the “gamification” setting turned off for free if I contact them. However, this doesn’t address the issue of charging people to access this option in the first place. It shouldn’t take a negative review for companies to address their issues of charging more than Netflix do each month to access education which market alternatives, and dictionaries, provide for free..Version: 8.3.1

W.T.FI was thinking about using this app but after reading so many terrible reviews I decided against it. One of the benefits of using a “Premium” subscription is to avoid ads. Apparently this isn’t true with this particular app. I noticed a couple other things as well; 1- It’s only been the last year or so that the premium feature has added the ads obviously to make more money. (Greedy jerks) 2- It appears to be an auto generated response to the people that have, for obvious reasons, complained about the ads. This in itself is vulgar display of, “We really don’t care what you think of our app!” that I have ever seen! The developer should be ashamed of this but I know the only thing they’re doing is laughing all the way to the bank! I’m sure the app has a great premise but due to a terrible developer, I will NEVER use this app and no one ever should!.Version: 6.6

Appreciate the illustrations, hate the paywall changesI loved having my word of the day as a widget, it used to be free. i never opened the app otherwise. most of the words were ones i used regularly, or ones i would never have a use for, but it was still nice to try and use that word that day. now, you have to pay for what is essentially a glorified dictionary definition as a widget. it’s annoying, and frustrating considering it used to be free. i appreciate the addition of illustrations in the app. i understand WHY they added a paywall. that doesn’t mean i agree. if the widget showed these illustrations, or did something past the definition and example sentence, i would understand. otherwise i’m simply deleting the app as the main reason i got it is inaccessible..Version: 8.3.2

RacistThe app itself is informative and put together well however iv noticed the illustrations that go with some definitions come across as racist. there has been serval images this is not a 1 time thing. The word of the day today was ‘Revile’ defined as “To use abusive speech due to anger or hatred”. The supported picture is a angry white man yelling at a upset black man for walking over his garden. Another example iv found was the word ‘listless’ defined as “lacking interest or motivation” the illustration support with this is a family of black people sitting around a kitchen table. These are only 2 examples out of many, iv tried reaching out to the support team for the app and never heard anything back..Version: 8.3.8

For childrenThe words are too basic. Could be good for ESL learners, though. The ads are annoying too..Version: 4.3

Annoying appToo many notifications and not strong enough words.Version: 6.6

Would Be 5 star If...1 CRUCIAL Change (in my opinion) and this app would be perfect. REMOVE THE ADS!! I understand it generates revenue to support further development.. but seriously, I'm sure most would agree that paying we'd happily pay a few bucks to remove ads entirely. Only reason they're so annoying is the timing of it. you click the notifications for the word of the day and half way through reading the definition without fail every single time an 20 sec ad pops up. Which I found out rather quickly I can close the app and Google shortcut the definition in half the time it takes the ad to finish running. It's a great app but ads in general, let alone placed inconveniently are a deal breaker for me..Version: 2.1

Another great app ruined by in-app purchases and subscriptionsUsed to be one of my favourite apps. You know, before I had to pay for a premium subscription or buy credits to use it. What’s all this malarkey with tapping to reveal the card too? Do not find it enjoyable. I liked when I got a notification with a new word daily, and when I could scroll through new words in a shuffled deck at my leisure. Not good now. Sadly will no longer be using — what a pity!.Version: 8.4.7

Useful for a time.I have been using this app for some time and did enjoy receiving a notification with a new word every day. However, my enthusiasm for using this app has slowly diminished, mostly due to the fact that I started the find the new words uninspiring. I went to check a word today that did pop up that I thought was interesting, only to be greeted immediately by one of those obnoxious and intrusive adverts. I have now deleted the app..Version: 3.4

Horrible updateNew update is horrible. Focused on quirky pictures rather than word..Version: 8.0

Nice widget but absurd priceI like having the widget with a new word each day, some fascinating, some are just commonplace but on the whole it’s good. I thought I’d upgrade it to remove the ads, assuming it would be a few dollars one-off. But no! It is an expensive recurring subscription. $33 per year. Or if you like, $90 for lifetime. Seriously? For an app that has a word on a widget and gives you a definition. Pull your heads in developers..Version: 6.1

Cannot downloadCannot download.Version: 1.3

Words are not practical or usefulI’m still in the free trial. I really wanted to love this app but some of the words presented are too impractical. My goal is to learn new words that I’d actually use in daily conversation so I can clearly and effectively communicate my ideas. An example of a word presented is “f” (the “word” was literally one letter). The word form was “unknown”. The definition was “farad”. Ok, so what the heck is a farad? I had to look that up: “a unit of electrical capacitance”. After that I realized this app wasn’t for me. Some other words presented are not actually used in spoken English, were too nichey or too academic. I don’t have much time to waste. I would only pay for this app knowing that the word lists are well-curated and hand-selected by real humans who know which words are ACTUALLY used in daily spoken or written English, not AI or someone who is not qualified. I’m not suggesting the latter but I cannot imagine a real human selecting “f” as a daily vocabulary word..Version: 8.4.11

Strangely ConfusingThis app says what it does - it gives you a new word each day. However, the example sentences are often bizarre and provide little elucidation of the word’s meaning. They can be convoluted, dated and confusing - even as a native English speaker. Also, I understand this app needs ads to be profitable, but they are long, loud and hard to exit..Version: 3.9

What a great shame !Without doubt this was the best word/dictionary app out there. Fast, informative, easy to navigate and so informative. Now,sadly, destroyed by adverts and upgrade requests. With regret, it’s deletion time. Maybe you guys should have taken time to look around and see there are some excellent word apps out there that haven’t fallen into the same trap and are still free. I’m sure you won’t miss one user, but you’d be foolish to think I’m the only one..Version: 4.8

Too many adsI used to love this app but now getting a 30 second ad every time I open it has ruined it. I don’t mind the occasional ad but at this point it’s just a money grab. You’re not really providing any worthy content just the dictionary definition of a word...Version: 4.9

Bad in many waysThe widget takes too much space and doesn’t use it. When you click on the widget, it doesn’t show you the word it’s on the screen. The words are really not that useful..Version: 6.4

NiceToo many ads but good words.Version: 2.1

App not workingNothing is showing up. Once I get into the app, the only thing I can see is the settings section..Version: 6.6

Too many adsIt’s unfortunate that an app people use for learning and expanding their vocabularies has so many inane and long ads. I would love this app if it weren’t for the ads..Version: 5.9

AdsThe ads are way too long, loud and annoying! Has me looking for a different option. Waiting 30 seconds for the ad to end feels like an eternity especially when they are super obnoxious ones.Version: 6.1

Practice/Quizzes/Log in neededI’ve used this app over a year now, and the words are useful, and I’ve favourite a lot of them. But there’s been several occasions where I had to find the words again as they get removed from my favourite list. Not sure whether that’s because of a bug, but if there was an account system where you could log in I think this would Be avoided. There needs to be a bit more to this app where you can practice and do quizzes to retain the words..Version: 2.5

A great app, ruined.I used to love this app, was great to learn a new word everyday and expand my vocabulary. The newest update however, has meant I’ve had to delete one of my favourite apps. The word of the day is now hidden behind a scratch-card, and the option to disable this useless gamification is hidden behind a £10/month paywall. I appreciate developers need revenue, but this is a slap in the face of your fanbase. There are less patronising ways to make your app more profitable. Update: I should email your support to get rid of a patronising paywall? You must be joking! I’ve already downloaded an alternative app and I suggest others do the same..Version: 8.2.5

Ads with premium subscriptionI don't know why I keep getting ads appearing with premium subscription purchased..Version: 7.3

Wrong grammar and spelling mistakesThat’s pretty embarrassing for an app that is supposed to help you learn more vocabulary. They wrote “when you WHERE 8 years old” instead of “when you WERE 8 years old”. They also used the phrase “went TO a trip” instead of “went ON a trip”. Thank god I didn’t pay for this app..Version: 8.0

Word of the day...could be better poor quality of word usage and definitionWord of the day should give more and better examples of the word and not just in one or two sentences and also in different context with the option of a thesaurus being available other than a link to google for further resources of understanding the meaning of the word. Google provides clearer definitions and example of how the word “should be used correctly” and used in a complete sentence. Googles got the right idea for better sentence structure and meaning. The examples of definitions from word of the day is quite elementary and not clear and using the word to describe it somehow as the meaning doesn’t really define or explain the word and MUST be used in a better context. ...so for these reason I’m rating it 2 stars ✨.Version: 2.2

Please fix the appNothing comes up when I open the app. Response to developer: why would I redownload an app where the developers take 357 days to respond to my review? I don’t have any faith that any future issues will be resolved in a timely manner and I’ve long since found a different app that meets my needs..Version: 7.4

Expensive and suited to school children/teenagersThe app is not only expensive, the description of the word when used in a sentence is basic and embarrassing, like they are teaching teenagers. Also there is an error in the recent one as well. Feigned “The day [most of the sentences start with “The day” - so basic] you feigned a cold so that your mother would allowed you to skip the final test” I wouldn’t bother getting the app, buy a dictionary instead and save your money..Version: 8.3.4

The ads make the app not worth usingTo give anyone an idea what the app is like using as a free user: The notification pops up. I open the app and try to read the word and definition quickly before the almost one minute long ad takes over. Most of the time, I don’t finish reading before the ad and I can either 1. Wait almost one minute for the ad to finish. 2. Close out the app and be frustrated. Most people casually using the app will probably choose to close it. Just not worth it. I understand that apps are not free to run and maintain, but the ads make the experience for a free user awful. This is the worst one I’ve seen which is why I’m choosing to write a review. Just start charging to download the app..Version: 4.5

Too many adsToo many ads but good concept.Version: 6.1

New update 50/50I have loved word of the day in widget form on my phone for ages now, but I hate having to open the widget to see the word. The new pictures and stuff with words are cool but I don’t want to click into it- the whole point of a widget isn’t to click in. Not sure if I’ll keep it now as defeats the purpose. But use to love it..Version: 8.2.3
