Home Chef: Meal Kit Delivery for Negative User Reviews

The worst meal service ever!!!My husband and I have used several meal delivery services over the years and Home Chef is by far the worst! So many times our food arrived hot because it was missing freezer packs, meal items were missing, recipe cards were missing or ingredients would arrive slimy. This would happen EVERY delivery! Oh and let’s talk about customer service or I should say the lack there of! Every call was a fight to get a refund! One particular rep named Joaquin Salgado takes the prize for delivering the worst customer service by refusing to issue a refund for an entire meal missing and argued that 1) I was issued a refund the previous week for a missing meal despite the fact that it was a completely different order, and 2) lied and said he didn’t have the authority to issue refunds…only managers can and there were none available to help me!!! Seriously folks, save your money and sanity and opt for Hello Fresh where the food is higher quality, never missing or spoiled and tastes better!.Version: 3.16.2

QualitySome items are not translating well with shipment. Precut potatoes are watery and sometimes saturated and falling apart. Whole potatoes were a much better choice. Prediced peppers/onions have the same issue. Green beans are often in a condition that suggests they have been frozen or water soaked which makes them no longer crisp and usable. I have been a customer for many years and quality is definitely waining. I also find it disheartening that there is never a point of appreciation such as an anniversary gift of perhaps a 1/2 price meal or something. Repeatedly sending “coupons” to share with friend is a waste of paper and a ongoing “ask” from HC to send more customers their way. How about saving the paper, boxing time and continual request for more from your loyal customers and replace it with a show of gratitude. I might then consider sharing my “coupons” that I can access online with a friend. After all I’m always talking you guys up. Do you appreciate me?.Version: 3.23.1

I don’t have some of my groceries for the week because of these con artistsSigned up and didn’t see a single thing I wanted, so I went to cancel the subscription. No way to cancel it, just “pause” I paused it, the only way to stop everything I then get an email that says “sorry to see you go.” In the subject line July 16, four days later, they charge my card Turns out “pausing” my subscription didn’t cancel my first order, and I would have to go to customer service for that. This was buried in their fine print. I got a box today they charged me almost $90 for I didn’t want. A much bigger problem is the fact that I use one card for all my subscriptions, INCLUDING some of my grocery subscriptions, and only keep enough on there for my budget. They charged me and another charge for the food I didn’t want didn’t go through. So they stole my money and I don’t have food I need. I hope you all go bankrupt..Version: 3.15.2

Spoiled vegetablesI have been using meal delivery services for a very long time, and currently use 3 different companies, including this one. While the credit given for missing or spoiled food is prompt and appreciated, I must say that this company is the worst when it comes to delivering quality. The problem is when you order vegetables that have moisture issues once the packaging is opened, like mushrooms, they always arrive with condensation inside the package and will be spoiled and stink within 24 hours. I have tried on multiple occasions and scallions, green beans, mushrooms, cucumbers and zucchini all are ruined and are iffy even if eaten the day of receipt. Even items like Brussels sprouts and potatoes that should last a bit longer go bad in 4-5 days, which leads me to believe that they were not quality to begin with. It is unfortunate, because everything else about this company has potential and I enjoy their meals..Version: 3.25.19

Could be better…After months of trying this kit system and talking with other who use different ones I’ve determined these folks must just hope you don’t have any idea how to boil water and then send you the closest thing they can to whatever the heck it is you ordered. Consistently SPOILED or near spoiled veggies…maybe pack stuff so they are AWAY from the freezer packs?!? Got the wrong meat multiple times like the protein wasn’t even any of the dishes we ORDERED!?! How do you mess THAT up? More than once!?! And don’t get me started on their “instructions”…augh had several decent meals but overall I’d say stick with a FRESHer option and these guys AINT IT! Yes I talked to customer care about the issues mentioned above. “We will credit you, oh we sent the wrong protein well they one we did send you is free of charge”…no it’s not since I paid more for what I actually ORDERED…meals are sent separated in big plastic bags with tinfoil pans to bake in…just not worth it Developer response is the same TRASH their CS reps offer=NADA! Thanks but I’m good not wasting ANY MORE of MY time trying to explain how to service YOUR customers! 🤦🏼‍♂️maybe start by either educating you CSRs or replacing them all and get ones that are WILLING to do the job..Version: 3.25.5

Bad serviceThe food is good, but they have bad customer service and the boxes are almost ALWAYS delayed till the next day. Surprising when you consider there are other meal kit services out there like Blue Apron and HelloFresh who have really good service. Also, the recipe cards and the app doesn’t contain detailed nutritional info on all the recipes. For example, they’ll send you a kind of sauce without telling you what’s in it. If you have food allergies or restrictions, which I do, you have to go look it up online through another source. The impression they give is that they don’t care too much about customers being happy. It’s too bad because their recipes are pretty good..Version: 3.12.0

Deactivated account still was chargedI deactivated/paused my account and was still charged. Funny thing was I did that awhile ago but all of a sudden I got a 109$ charge on my account . The meals were skipped and the previous weeks were skipped and I didn’t get charged. I contacted customer support and they swiftly responded. I saw the refund pending in my bank. 2 days later the pending charged was removed but the home chef company said it was processed. The only thing processed was the charge the gave me . In my bank if the pending charge/debit is supposed to be there it will stay until it goes through. So the fact that the pending debit was removed let me know they took that refund away and only charged me. Very shady, then I send them proof they haven’t even responded like they did when they were asking for the proof or the other times I contacted them.Version: 3.17.0

Food is great but it’s ALWAYS lateI don’t know if this is more a FedEx problem or a Home Chef problem but after multiple late deliveries with ruined food we paused our account. The recipes were always very good but they’re shipped on Saturday, supposed to be delivered on Monday and actually show up on Tuesday or Wednesday. Tuesday we could make work but by Wednesday the food is no good. We called after it happened once and the next week it came on time. Two weeks later (the following Monday was Memorial Day so that doesn’t count) it showed up on Wednesday and again the meats were spoiled. It’s disappointing because we really enjoyed it and I have friends who have no problem with the deliveries coming on time. It’s annoying though when you do your shopping for the week expecting Home Chef to come with three meals and when it doesn’t you’re left scrambling or ordering out. (And if you’re wondering if it’s late because we live somewhere Fed Ex may not deliver to often it’s not - we live in Hoboken, NJ!).Version: 3.15.2

3 out of 5 for the food service and appI’ve just finished my first week. Here’s my take: Pros: 2 out of 3 meals in my first shipment were very good. They give you recipe book. The meals are simple. Cons: app is far from intuitive. There’s nothing that says “here’s what’s coming this week, here’s what’s coming next week” etc. Just an area called “Your Picks”. What does “your picks” mean? I guess you’ll have to just figure it out. First delivery contained frozen unusable produce. They responded quickly and offered me a $10 credit, although the lack of produce in the recipe affected two $12 meals. In a restaurant, this wouldn’t fly. That same meal also called for a garlic aioli - which they didn’t provide. They *did* provide mayo and garlic powder and I figured out how to make the aioli but it just seemed a little disorganized for them not to mention that you’re supposed to make it on your own. The bread in this same meal (for a burger) was bland The first shipment included two coupons for $35 to give to friends if they join. This may seem like a dumb question but … why wasn’t I given $35 off my first order?! Especially when part of it arrived inedible!?.Version: 3.24.16

Extremely disappointedI signed up for this because I saw a promotion for it on TikTok for “16 free meals” so I figured I’d give it a try. It’s not free meals it’s just a pro rated discount - which is misleading to begin with , but that’s not where my problem is. I’ve used similar services in the past and have been happy with them, so I figured I’d try this one out. I set my preferences right off the bat to be vegetarian, and was surprised to find that my pre selected meals all contain meat. When I went to change my preferences for my meals, I selected vegetarian as a filter option. The only things that came up or desserts and salads. I am mediately tried to cancel my first order because it was clear that there were no choices that would satisfy my dietary restrictions. I even came to terms with the fact that I could just order salad and dessert, however I’m not allowed to do that apparently because it doesn’t meet the “order minimum” since they are technically add ons and not actual meals.I’ve tried many different meal prep services like this before and have never once had an issue where they advertised as having vegetarian options and then did not. I tried talking to the “customer service “bot” trying to get my money back for my first order and it basically told me I couldn’t.So now I’m stuck with no choice but to waste money on meals that I cannot and will not be eating..Version: 3.18.0

Great service until you want to leaveI was a loyal customer for years and spent thousands of dollars throughout my duration as a customer. Yes, there were quality issues from time to time, but their customer service was decent enough. Unfortunately, I needed to cancel a few months ago due to changes in my life. I filled out a form they requested and noted that I planned on coming back when I could. Randomly two months later, they reenabled my account. When I received the box, I notified them immediately. I was told that I had paused the service (which I had a few months leading up to my cancelling the service and I may have done prior to filling out the form), but did not cancel it. They gave me half of my money back. I said that was unacceptable, explained the history, and I received a note saying that I’m not eligible for a refund and the 50% I received was done as a courtesy. Up until now, I thought I would return to the service, but after being robbed, I am furious. I will likely have my cc dispute the charges anyway. This was terrible. I strongly recommend you avoid this service unless you plan on being robbed too eventually by them. Thank you Chris from customer service for ensuring that I never return to home chef. Fortunately, your service is not the only game in town..Version: 3.17.0

Convenient, not consistentI’ve been a customer for a long time. It was great for the first year but for quite a while now, we have issues with missing items nearly every week and I got tired of complaining and asking that they rectify these issues. The only reason we keep using the service is the convenience and not having to ask the annoying, “what do you want for dinner” question. Understand you’re paying for convenience and not accuracy or consistency and you’ll be fine. Their customer service is fine when you report an issue but I’ve just stopped because it’s even more annoying to report the same issues week after week..Version: 3.23.1

Take it or leave itPros: First off, the meals are absolutely delicious! But the fried onions, pickles and jalapeño going are in almost every meal and it can get a bit redundant. It’s almost like they have a chef that loves one thing and they rotate recipes around that one thing they love. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Cons: most of the meals would show up with withered or damaged vegetables or the packages would just not show up period and you still get charged for them. They were quick to compensate you but now you are out those meals you ordered and the whole point of convenience is out the window. I purchased over 50 meals from Home Chef over the course of a few months and I’ve had more problems than what it is worth so I finally canceled it..Version: 3.11.2

No as healthy as you may thinkMy dad recently became a Type 2 diabetic so we were both looking to start eating healthier. The pros of home chef are that the food is fresh, you cook it yourself, the ingredients are all separated, and it tastes really delicious. However, I had my nutritionist look over all of the meals and ALL of them were very high in saturated fats and sodium. I went through 100+ of their foods looking for something that wasn’t so high in fats and sodium. Out of their hundreds of meals, I only found 2 meals that passed. I wish apart from having “calorie conscious” options they also controlled their sodium and saturated fats. It seems like they tried to substitute the taste by adding more sodium and fat. You think you’re eating healthy when you’re actually not. If you’re looking for a healthy option this is definitely not it. I’m really disappointed, won’t be ordering again..Version: 3.25.30

DON’T DOWNLOAD. JUST USE YOUR BROWSER. IT NEEDS TO FIX THIS APP.App doesn’t do anything. I signed up for an account on my computer yesterday, added payment method, selected frequency and number of meals, paid and was then directed to download the app and use it instead of the browser. So, I downloaded the App. When I login, the screen goes to a blank webpage except for home chef’s green house logo at the top of the screen. I removed and reinstalled the app, thinking that might fix it. Then, I removed it again, waited until the next day (today) to download it and try again. Same Issue. Blank page after logging in. If this issue gets fixed so I can actually login to a working app and try it out I’ll happily give a different rating. I’ll follow up with a comment about the food after my first week eating the food they send..Version: 3.16.2

Excellent service, unreliably providedI love this service. The options for the meals are excellent. You can cater to your diet, but also to your lifestyle. In addition to classic meal kits, they also include oven ready and quick cook options for the extra-busy customer. The optional goodies of crunchy sides, salads, and desserts top off this winner. Three months in, and I have to cancel my service. Too many times, I have received boxes that are missing ingredients, or recipe cards, once receiving a box with all the wrong meals! The last straw was today, as I began cooking the four penne pasta meal. Because halfway through I realized they hadn't provided any pasta. Customer service has been wonderful every time, but it's been one time too many for me..Version: 3.17.0

Always lateFirst world problems I know- but in my area at least they only deliver wed-sat so I picked Wednesday because I want meals during the work week. Multiple times they have been a day or so late, only once notifying me that it would be a day late. Pretty frustrating when you plan on having the meals come a certain day and it doesn’t come… would have bought things to make dinner those nights if I had known. I’ve done a few trials of different delivery services and they have better delivery day options and they were NEVER late on delivery. They also don’t let you actually CANCEL, just pause your subscription! I’ll be messaging support to see if I can actually fully cancel. Also a last thought- many of the meals come half prepped for you which is nice if you love a busy lifestyle (ex: pre mashed potatoes instead of sending fresh potatoes to cook and mash yourselves) So kind of lame when you don’t realize you’re not getting fresh ingredients to prepare yourself. Final advice: Choose hello fresh..Version: 3.15.2

Good food but issues with every orderI love most of the meals and they are the most organized out of other companies I’ve used ! They make it very easy to start cooking straight from the premarked dinner bags . The food is good I haven’t had anything I didn’t like , some things are amazing like your eating at a restaurant ! As for the company they need to get it together I’ve had problems with every single box I’ve gotten leaking meats , bad veggies , missing items, my last box I only got shipped 4 days 2 servings instead of 4 servings which was terrible I had to cook to different meals . I did contact them and received a credit , but do I have to keep having these issues and complain that part I hate! I paused my subscription for now because of these issues . I’m going to use up my credit once again and see if the next time I have any problems if I do I think I have to move on to a different company, imagine paying for these meals but then have to still run out because they didn’t send you enough of something or something was bad it’s a headache forsure ..Version: 3.25.27

Great food. Horrid Delivery. This is probably the best meal delivery service when it comes to recipes and how they taste, ease of preparation, and portion size. Also their customer service is really good and if they mess up they are great to refund or compensate you otherwise. That said, the third party delivery service is horrendous. For example we are in CO. This comes from CA. Our delivery on Thursday sometimes isn’t here until mid-day Saturday!! Two of five weeks have been a total loss. They resend the meals and give refunds but what an awful business model that is. We’re left without food and have to scramble for groceries. Then all that waste- the packaging (box, ice packs, plastics) and most importantly the food waste when there are starving families in need right now. Unacceptable. Irresponsible. We will be changing food services..Version: 3.16.2

Meals are good, app is notThis is not the first meal delivery service we have used. We had high hopes when we signed up and have been very pleased with the quality of the recipes. However, the app and service are both lacking in multiple ways. We have had multiple deliveries that have been a day or more late since starting service. However, the app says “delivered” on the expected date every time despite the tracking showing that it was not. I feel it is also difficult to report any problems with delivery or meals. This is something that should be easy to do on the app, but for whatever reason is not..Version: 3.18.0
