Chambers Dictionary for Negative User Reviews

Why only one star?In most respects this is a first rate dictionary app - easy to use, clear, functional etc. I wish I could give it 5 stars. So why only one? The reason is because it fails in the most basic requirement of a dictionary - giving accurate meanings for words. A couple of examples of errors: "synonymous" the correct meanings are given, BUT it then says "closely associated". This is wrong. Or how about "prodigal"? Again, correct meanings are given, but it then says "A wanderer returned"!!! Whaaaat? This is rubbish!!! I can understand the need for languages to evolve, but encouraging the sort of poor English that sloppy journalists use is unforgivable in a dictionary. I have a gloomy feeling that I'd find the same "aawww, whatevs" attitude in the printed version. I'm going to have to hang on to my Chambers 20th Century for as long as possible..Version: 1.9

HasbeenThis dictionary with all the wonders of technology suffers from the classic dictionary complaint! "how can i find the word, if i don't know how to spell it" I use the net because a search engine offers some alternative suggestions to what you are trying to enter in the search..Version: 3.3

Not badDoesn't always show plural words. I use this to play scrabble and I need to be able to check what the plural form of some not so common words are..Version: 2.6

A fine dictionary with sub-par UXI’ve used this app and its Thesaurus companion for many years. They’re worth the price. But the truth is, the interface is dated. Useful features go un-signposted. Settings are buried in opaque menus and behind unclear icons. In short, it’s old-fashioned and idiosyncratic. Seems like a one-person project where nobody has challenged a single one of the many arbitrary design decisions. It’s a testament to the quality of the dictionary that I still consider this an essential purchase..Version: 4.3

Perhaps only good for crossword loversVery simple short explanations; No sample sentences. I have never tried the paper version of this dictionary before..Version: 0

Should have been satisfied with OxfordDictionary for Kindergartners. Refund please..Version: 1.9

International English is not US English!Extremely disappointed with this - it’s the awful and hideous US English. Words that end in ‘ise’ such as recognise, organise, etc., are listed ONLY in the US equivalent. The Thesaurus, which I also purchased, suggests American spellings as well. For example, the Thesaurus entry for ‘distinguish’ suggests words such as ‘particularize’ and ‘characterize’. There is no option to switch off ‘US English’ for the excellent British English. I don’t know why they say International English in the description, which is misleading... International English is British English and not the disgusting ‘US English’. Anyway, I asked iTunes for a refund which they’ve given me..Version: 3.61

OverratedI was very disappointed with this. I used to love my original Chambers dictionary (as in the hard copy) but this is all a bit messy. When I use a dictionary, I want to quickly find a clear, concise definition. This is just not user friendly. The cost of it just makes it an even worse purchase. I much prefer the free Oxford and Collins dictionaries. I guess if you're fascinated by the English language, a crossword sleuth or aren't pushed for time then this could be for you but it's just not my cup of tea. For example, look up scarecrow on Collins and you'll get "an object, usually in the shape of a man, made out of sticks and old clothes to scare birds away from crops" - that's pretty accurate in my opinion. Look up the same word in Chambers and you'll get "anything set up to scare birds" - so what, does that mean Heathrow airport or the O2 Arena when Little Mix are playing ? That sort of definition is as much use as a chocolate teapot !.Version: 3.3

Some improvements are in orderFor $4.99, there should be a thesaurus, audio pronunciations, voice search, and example sentences..Version: 3.1

No example sentence whatsoeverGUI is fine. It os the same as the free wordweb app GUI. The content is subpar in my opinion. Absolutely no example sentences. This dictionary is a definite no for English learns..Version: 2.2

Very DisappointingChambers has always been one of my favourite dictionaries but this app is lacking in every department. The absence of some words, the omissions in meanings of others plus the the absence of origin puts this dictionary a long way down the list of good reference apps for me. If this was what the paper version was like it would not sell a single copy. I cannot believe that WordWeb or Chambers are pleased with this wishy-washy, disappointingly abridged and under-featured representation of a great dictionary. I hope they do something about this by delivering a significant and much needed update..Version: 3.3

App not workingI have a purchased Chambers Dictionary and Thesaurus apps that have stopped working. When I go to App Store it displays that I have purchased the apps. This has been for several weeks now. Not acceptable!.Version: 3.85

Be careful of spellingThis is an adequate dictionary, no doubt, but care should be used with its spelling preferences. In particular, in many cases it presents the usage of a _minority_ of those for whom English is their first language as the principle spelling, which could mislead the reader..Version: 2.6

Where is random word feature?Love chambers dictionary and its crisp definitions. But where is the random work feature for the app? Or even word of the day feature?.Version: 4.3

Censored contentThe dictionary seems to be censoring rude words like “b*st*rd” and there is no obvious way to disable this. Can you please fix this?.Version: 4.1

What's Wrong With An Attractive and Informative Icon?I may be petty, but I'm going to pan every app that follows John Ive's knuckledragging example and "flattens" their icon. This is not my all time favorite dictionary (and I use several regularly) but it's very close to the top of my list..Version: 2.4
