Breaker—The social podcast app for Negative User Reviews

Good features but buggy and brokenApp is very unstable and crashes a lot or doesn’t remember my sign in.Version: 1.0.5

Very glitchy and frustratingDownloaded episodes don’t appear. They start downloading then stop as soon as I exit to another part of the app. Episodes that I delete keep reappearing in downloads after I delete them. Very frustrating..Version: 1.0.4

This app keeps getting worse and worse 😞I’ve tried so hard to give this app chances to improve. I’ve been a user for almost 4 years, and it just keeps getting worse and worse. It doesn’t bother me that there are so many bugs, or that it doesn’t work consistently. What bothers me is that I see regular releases of new features when the core functionality of the app is incredibly unstable. Things as simple as playing back podcast from the last session don’t work. The UI for pop-ups literally obscured the buttons that you’re trying to use just to tell you that the app is switching to “nighttime mode.” This would be like your car stopping in the middle of the highway in order to tell you that it is turning on the air conditioning. 🤦🏾‍♂️ I have really tried. I have been a paid member, I have been a premium member, I have sent feedback, and the app just doesn’t get better. It’s like there’s no prioritization for the core functions of the application. No one needs all the bells and whistles. I just want to listen to podcast. I thought that maybe after the company was acquired, that things would get better, but really, they have just gotten worse…faster. Anyways, hopefully this review will save someone else four years of anger and frustration. Find another app..Version: 5.0.20

Good idea, mediocre executionThings I like: skip silences, finding out about popular episodes, seeing what my friends are listening to Things I dislike: extremely buggy / low quality (skip ahead is unreliable, sometimes crashes the app and removes the current episode from my playlist; episodes don’t always register as listened; “play” and “pause” doesn’t work reliably — or the symbol doesn’t reflect the truth, I’ve even heard the same episode being played twice SIMULTANEOUSLY but not in sync, and couldn’t figure out how to control it— could only control one of them), episodes recommended are too tech/VC centric.Version: 0.6.6

Almost a Stitcher (Classic) replacementStitcher made some horrible life choices and I’m on the search for a new podcast app. After briefly looking at the others, Breaker seems to be a pretty clear leader. It does so well what Stitcher used to do, it lets you prioritize your favorite podcasts, sort them and listen to them in the priority you choose. I still have yet to test it with my CarPlay (who is driving many places in 2020 anyway?). So this may be a feature request. The things I want to see that would quickly take it to 5 stars and keep me from ever going back to Stitcher (if they get their App together again). 1) Ability to search and add shows while you are listening to a show. I’ll start the search, but it doesn’t actually work until I pause the show I’m listening to. 2) have “back 15 sec” in the minimized view or the lock screen. 3) Start play on App open!! I don’t want to go dig around for the play button when I first open the app. I’m usually ready to just start listening. 4) an alarm feature, but I’m pretty sure with other automation I can tie this to the iOS alarm. Things it does better, but I haven’t had a chance to explore. The social aspect of it! Rating and liking podcasts. The longer I use it, I’m sure I’ll find more features that will keep me a forever convert..Version: 1.1.12

Some problems-If you delete an episode via the downloads tab, it also deletes the episode immediately below it. Also sometimes when you search for a podcast, after searching the search bar isn't there anymore and you can't search again. The scrolling lags too, and typing comments is almost impossible because of the lag when you do that, but that might be because I have an iphone 5..Version: 0.8.10

Close to amazing, but buggy downloading holding it backIf you’re looking for an initial podcast app to help you discover what you’re into - breaker is great. Grab it, find a couple of shows you’re into, and then uninstall it and install another app. At least if the ability to listen offline, or in low-internet situations, is important to you. Breaker is so broken when it comes to downloads. The following is frequent: - just steadfastly refuses to download shows. The progress wheel will disappear, requiring frequent mash and pray to download an episode. - won’t play downloaded episode. Either errors out, or can’t play whilst offline. - despite storage settings, episodes that haven’t been listened to disappear. If you’re a traveller, listen to podcasts as part of your commute, or have a less than generous 3G plan, don’t use breaker..Version: 0.6.12

Basic functions very buggyBasic functions often don’t work. Volume changing, pausing, episodes often skip time. Search function is okay, social functions good idea, but if basic functions don’t improve they won’t keep me.Version: 0.8.10

New update is slick but confusing and plays randomlyThe new update looks great but adds too much functionality and you also lose your old usage data, which is ironic because it wants you to share your usage as social proof. I also lost all my lists and now have to recreate them. Another annoying part of the new design is that the list doesn’t remove episodes you’ve listened to, creating a giant list for you to figure out what you want to listen to. It seems like the update was trying to do too much..Version: 5.0.20

Needs performance improvementsThis used to be a good, functional app that I supported and recommended to people. Now, it’s buggy and slow, so I’ve been using it less and less. The home page is laggy and not user friendly, loadings are longer than they should be, and the overall experience is just not smooth enough, and that’s what matters the most. Do the devs even use their app? Because if they did, they probably wouldn’t have tolerated Breaker at its current state. It shouldn’t be this slow, especially not on newer iPhones..Version: 0.8.12

GarbageBeen using this app for years, but now it’s awful. 1. Downloaded podcasts still need app to go online before playing (?) 2. Very slow updating even when on Wi-Fi 3. Past shared links of podcasts on twitter now just go to an advert for sister app Player FM - my entire twitter history been destroyed 4. The opml file exported to move to another podcasts app is not standard and doesn’t work(!).Version: 5.0.20

Fix downloadsI have to say I really like the app for a lot of what it offers. I prefer the download and sort options compared to the default Apple app. However, if I am listening to a podcast as it is being downloaded to my device, and something interrupts my internet connection (the whole reason I download them in the first place) I lose the entire download and I can’t start playing the podcast again until I delete the partial download and restart the app....Version: 0.9.15

Update ruined the appI’m going to delete the app. I used it regularly and loved the interface. They deleted all my history, meaning I have to manually go through and mark each episode listened. Can you imagine a podcast with 300 episodes, and I have no idea which I heard? There is no way to export my information. I reached out, and they have not done anything to help at all. It’s a canned statement about needing room on their servers. Also, there is an upgrade button when listening that seems to purposely be located in a spot you’d accidentally hit it. I listen while I drive, and I imagine this would be an issue. Best features are gone and behind the pay service. I’m switching apps and deleting..Version: 5.0.20

Fix/Add Auto Delete OldGreat app, good enough to complete with the native podcast app. But this thing will not automatically delete old podcast once it begins to reach the cap limit for the app. Now it is unusable, when opening it just freezes and become unresponsive. Please fix!🙏🏿.Version: 0.9.8

I want this app to be greatI've been using this almost everyday for the past ~4 months, and I have to say I loved it at first. But recently the app has gotten worse week over week, to the point that it's simply not usable anymore. Some of the issues I've had: - looses track of my place in podcast. Sometime its off by 5-10 minutes, other times - especially if it's been more than a couple of hours since pausing - it will lose my place entirely and start from the beginning. - fails to fetch most recent episodes - 500 errors when refreshing feed - streams podcast that it says was downloaded ( I tested this several times by turning all data off with an episode I downloaded in the app and it won't play) - play/pause button state gets flipped occasionally - the button will show paused and actually be playing, vise versa, etc. - app will just crash from time to time For now, I will reluctantly return to the Apple podcast app...but I'll keep an eye on future updates hopefully fixing these bugs that render the app unusable..Version: 0.7.10

Not GreatFrequently won’t play and often loses where I’m up to and goes back to the start. Very annoying when it may be a day or 2 between listens.Version: 5.0.20

Turns out it’s a scamI paid for this app and got scammed. I have been locked out of my account for months on end. Reaching out to support gets no response. They “updated” the app to require you to reset your password to access your account again, but the link they email you is broken. Don’t bother paying for this app. It’s apparently just a money grab. Previous review: Social podcast app? No thank you. I don’t want to talk about my podcasts or share them with my friends. I don’t care what anyone else is listening to and I don’t care about discovering or searching for new podcasts. I have several custom RSS feeds for ad free podcasts that I pay for via Patreon. I want to import them to an app via URL, listen to them, AND SAVE THE BEST EPISODES TO A PLAYLIST TO SAVE FOREVER SO I CAN RELISTEN TO THEM EASILY. I have tried a dozen podcast apps and searched high and low on Google. I finally found this app through a Medium article and I want to cry. It actually works. Import via RSS works. Listening works. Adding my favorite episodes to the favorites playlist works, and I can customize the settings to keep the episodes from being deleted on listen. Finally. I have not been able to find a single other app on the internet that does this and it’s literally the only feature I wanted. And I didn’t even have to fork over cash to try the app. Well done. I will be subscribing to get more playlists now that I know this app does what I need..Version: 5.0.20

Love/hate relationship with BreakerI really like this app. The user interface is great and I have listened to a lot of podcasts through Breaker. However, recently podcasts stop after 2-3 minutes. I restart and then it stops again, and on and on. I have uninstalled the app and reinstalled it and it will work correctly for a while and then it all starts again. I travel a lot and it’s a real bummer when I’ve downloaded a bunch of podcasts for a flight and have to restart them every 2-3 minutes. Usually I just quit and read a book. I’d love to know how to fix this. I want to be able to use the app..Version: 1.0.4

All Podcasts NOT available on BreakerDespite Breaker advertising All Podcasts Available, I have found this to be untrue. One of my favorite Podcasts just celebrated their 500th episode (each episode is over 1 1/2 hours long), yet upon searching for it in Breaker, it does not appear. I was able to import it from the Overcast app into Breaker. I have used Overcast for years and started using Castro about two months ago. I really want to like Breaker as a replacement due to its “social” aspect, but I now wonder how many other podcasts I will miss out on due to search results saying “not found”..Version: 0.7.5

I love the app but the support feature doesn’t work.I’ve been trying to get ahold of Breaker because whenever I go to sort a podcast by oldest it never gives me their first episode. It loads a few episodes in. When I go to send them this support request it doesn’t let me tap on the send button through the app. So here I am, just trying to listen to podcasts from the beginning. I love the rest of the app for the most part. The categorization and the UI are great. But occasionally when I pause an episode and go back to listen to it the player will start it from the beginning. I wish there was a “play next” or “add to queue” option..Version: 5.0.20

Breaker gives way to Broken...if you’re trying to sign back in.Been using app for 3mths. App got accidentally deleted off my iPhone. As an existing user and I just want to sign in as GEM500, but the breaker app keeps redirecting me to set up new account. Very frustrating. Deleted app and reinstalled 3 times. Breaker gives way to Broken..Version: 1.2.9

Still buggyI gave it a loonnnnggg chance but it’s just too buggy. I love the UI and the features. Plus the costumer service on twitter is stellar but... the episodes i download are almost always corrupted and i have to redownload. Also, most of the podcasts i follow fail to load new episodes unless i go on the actual podcast subscription and reload the page. It’s annoying since have the time i forget about them and don’t get to listen to my fav podcasts. Sorry! But I need something more stable..Version: 0.6.6

Lost all dataWith the latest upgrade lost all of my saved information. 100% will never use again..Version: 5.0.20

I want to love itI love the idea of this podcast but it’s very buggy. Esp the part where i can see what my fiends are listening to. Skips backwards in a podcast at will, and if I stop listening to a podcast ep, then come back to it later, it doesn’t hold my place..Version: 1.0.1

Broken login = broken appBroken Facebook login. No I won’t give you access to my friends list... like, seriously? F#*^ this app.Version: 0.7.5

Shouldn't need to sign up to use podcastsThere is no reason a podcast app should require signing up to subscribe to a podcast. There are plenty of excellent podcast apps that don't require this. I'll be sticking with Overcast and Downcast..Version: 1.1.10

MehYears ago I used a podcast player that totally nuked their functionality overnight so I started using breaker. I figured that the social media aspect was good and in a few years they’d sort out its many issues. Just now, after an advertisement to buy a paid version of this app I has to watch a new podcast download on my phone for three minutes because if you navigate away Breaker stops downloading. I’ve spent hours of my life watching podcasts download on breaker. Their emails keep suggesting I listen to a podcast for redpilled black men (I actually checked it out, but not for me). More like heartBreaker. Amirite?.Version: 1.2.9

[updated review] Oh no, Breaker.. you as well? :[It was redesigned entirely indeed, and that’s not a good thing — at all! The “new” subscription model simply took away features that were long free for current users. The UX is way less efficient (looks like a stock template). No more playlists or download controls. When will projects learn that charging for what you once offered for free - with no real increment or advantage - is just pretending users are silly? My first podcast app has always been Downcast — truly, the only one of its niche worth paying for — yet I have also used Breaker n the side since their first release (pilot tester if my memory doesn’t fail me). I’m now most certainly going to be using only one app, and it isn’t going to be Breaker. Disappointed..Version: 5.0.20

App is too slow and doesn’t sync with with the iOS Core AudioThe Breaker app’s UX is way too slow and buggy. It also doesn’t sync with iOS Core Audio. Fast-forwarding or rewinding from the lock screen or control center doesn’t make the app interface sync..Version: 1.0.1

Downloading issuesI really want to like Breaker - the social parts are great. However, downloading is tricky - you either have to stream all (which kills my data) or elect to store 10 episodes or more (which uses 500mb+ of space). I’d rather be able to specify how much space I’d be open to using for downloads (overcast makes this very easy) and download one off episodes for offline listening. Furthermore even when I’ve enabled downloads it often seems to not download so when I’m on the subway or an airplane I have nothing to listen to..Version: 0.9.10

Great app, but..I absolutely adore the idea of this app. the issue that made me give a low rating is that the support with airpods is quite bad... pausing from them only works about a quarter of the time. the podcast gets stuck in the player but keeps playing through the airpods... causing it to jump WAY back when i manually pause and play it again from the app. not sure if i’m explaining this correctly, but it’s a huge issue..Version: 0.9.17

Worse over timeBreaker used to be my favorite podcast app. Search and subscription organization is still the best I've found and while not often used, I enjoyed the social features. But lately the bugs have been piling up to the point where I need to look somewhere else. - The app constantly crashes while listening. - I explicitly turn off WiFi when pulling up the app to avoid a massive slow-down while it attempts to download I un-listened episodes. - Feeds are not updated consistently. I often find podcast episodes released yesterday in my notifications. - The semi-recent recommendation system does not have a way to upvote downvote items leading me to be spammed with sketchy pods that I can't leave feedback on Please, I don't need any more random features like integration with patreon. Just focus on app performance. I think all podcast apps are bad in their own particular ways, but breaker only fails on the features that matter.Version: 0.9.17

More like Deal-Breaker :(I consume about 3 hours a day of podcasts so consider myself a power user. Initially I loved the idea behind breaker but find that a few things really cause the experience with breaker to come grinding to a halt. 1. Podcasts automatically delete when you’ve listened to them, with no option to turn this off - maybe this is just me but sometimes I listen passively and later want to relisten to a podcast without having to redownload it. If you’re not on wifi this can cause you to chew through data. 2. To avoid data overages, I turn off cellular for this app and of course the app completely breaks. Podcasts that were previously downloaded disappear, artwork is gone. I jump in to listen and am flabbergasted that I now need to sit in silence or use my old, more reliable app Downcast. 3. Freezes and stops - I’m on an iPhone 8 with 256GB of storage. With less than 10gb of podcasts, I should have no problem running this app yet it freezes and sometimes randomly stops playing. Y’know that feeling you get when someone rips your headphones out. It’s like that..Version: 0.9.7

Battery killer :-(I enjoyed listening to the podcasts, but encountered 2 problems: 1. I monitored battery usage compared to others such as Spotify. In all cases I was playing downloaded podcasts only, NOT streaming. Still, there was a massive difference - Breaker was killing my battery compared to others (and I don't have an old iPhone - it's the latest OS). 2. Overall the app is slow to respond - buggy. I will be back if these things improve. 🙏.Version: 1.2.10

Used be great till they broke itI used to use this app on a daily basis until the developers decided to force a terrible sign in option that fails to work on my ipad and so I cannot access my subscriptions and playlists. I even contacted them about the issue but received unhelpful responses..Version: 1.2.9

Wanted to like this app.Likes: Social aspect App rarely breaks Dislikes: The home screen is too busy, since many podcasts change icons from week to week and have poorly designed icons to boot. I suggest the home page focus should be on what podcast users want most, which for me is better access to my subscriptions first, then if I’m searching for new material I’m open to looking at the currently-overly-noisy home page to suggest other options to me. No CarPlay support... The recommendations should only be implemented if the suggestions algorithm is good, and I think it’s not great in its current state. I’ve listened to a few recommendations but haven’t added a new subscription from them yet. Maybe sponsor a Kaggle competition to develop a better one? Ala Netflix. Also, a decision rationale description may yield more clicks, like, “recommended because you liked...”. Right now I don’t want your recommendations. Anyways, switching back to Castro for now, but will check back in hopes that the app improves over time since I think it has potential..Version: 0.8.14

Still some bugs occurringI downloaded this app to move away from other podcast apps. I love the layout and UI. I would rate this app higher, but my issue is that the pause and play button is not working on any other screen (home screen, pull down, car buttons, or Apple Watch now playing screen). When I do go back to app to get the podcast going again the last time I listened before pausing is not the same for when it starts up again. It is actually very behind depending on when the error occurred it could be that I am almost done with the podcast but in the podcast it shows that I am less than half of the way through. I apologize if I am not explaining this correctly, but it is an issue that I am continuously running into..Version: 0.9.18

Looks good, works poorlyReally wanted to love this app and recommended to many friends early on. Unfortunately lots of issues: - slow interface esp with a bigger library - slower podcast download speeds than other apps - streaming of podcast effectively doesn't work - recently downloaded 20 gigs of podcasts while on data (instead of WiFi) internationally even though the profile setting has this turned off (costing me $40+ and super slow speeds on google fi thereafter) - Bluetooth controls work inconsistently or not at all - app locks up on average every 20 minutes of listening - search doesn't work well (try searching for "b&n" for Barnes and noble podcast) - lock screen shows playing even when paused or vice versa - location is podcast is often lost forcing you to listen from an earlier point or starting over .... and more.Version: 0.9.17

Too buggyPros: Playback speed and smart skip functions work well. Cons: Every time I try to download episodes ahead of time when I know I won't have internet access, the app will lose the episode somehow despite having finished the download already. Listening to episodes frequently crashes the app. The progress bar for the episode always freezes, so I don't know how far into the episode I am after pausing it. Social aspect is okay, minus the fact that nobody is really using it..Version: 0.9.16

Best Podcast App Available!I’ve spent years bouncing between Podcast Addict, iTunes Podcast, and Soundcloud to have access to and manage dozens of subscriptions. Breaker has eliminated the need for multiple apps. It has also been a huge time-saver by allowing me to import all of my previous subscriptions from other apps, creating a streamlined and customizable playlist I rarely have to touch, and the wonderful skip silences feature! Last but definitely not least, the social aspect of Breaker is second to none. No other app offers the same level of user-to-user engagement. Don’t believe me? Then download it and send me a message telling me I’m wrong ;).Version: 0.5.7

2 main bad thingsI like the social aspect, i line that i can sorry podcasts from oldest to newest, i like the wide selection of shows. What i don’t like is how the app drains battery like crazy and how it just stops playing right before an episode ends..Version: 1.1.7

Love /HateI have a serious love/hate with this app. I want to love it because the social aspects are wonderful. However, I never know if it’s truly working as it should. Other podcast apps save progress, this app seems to lose that. I most definitely cannot keep progress between my two phones. It doesn’t always download in a timely manner. Episodes available in other apps for hours still won’t show available. It’s also a battery hog. Bottom line is functionality is great but reliability is questionable..Version: 0.9.13

Never written an App review but this is necessary.First, let me say that Breaker is my preferred podcast app. It does a lot of things really well that other apps do not HOWEVER, the issue with the app losing my place when I pause the podcast is extremely frustrating. Every time I see that there has been an update I expect this issue to be fixed and it still has not (in the year + that I've been using it). I'm deleting the app (AGAIN) because that bug is so frustrating and inconvenient (who has time to drag the time bar to find their place while driving?!) but I REALLY hope the developers fix this and soon..Version: 1.0.0

Lack of settings & useful featuresSeems solid for social features, but unfortunately that's not what I want from a podcast app. I want full control over the podcasts I listen to and the ability to listen to them anywhere. This app has no settings for individual podcast subscriptions. I normally use Downcast, which is the most powerful podcast app out there for having control over your subscribed podcasts. I want different settings for each podcast and the ability to stop/start each with my watch. This doesn't have an Apple Watch app and no web-based app either. There's potential here, but it has a long ways to go..Version: 1.1.11

What have you done?Used to be a great app. Loved its simplicity but, you f$&@ed with it. Tried to be fancy and add a lot of stuff we don’t need, now it’s slow, clunky and I can’t find what I want without waiting an eternity. I don’t want to use apple’s app, I want the old Breaker back!.Version: 0.9.7

Wrong way roundI have to agree to you having and using my data before I can even finish downloading your app, wrong way round, if your app is any good, I will willingly pay with my data, not before..Version: 1.2.10

DealbreakerUpdated app and at once lost everything. All of my playlists. All of my listening history, liked episodes. Everything. This was such a let down..Version: 1.2.10

No Chromecast Support?Deal breaker.Version: 1.2.9
