ABRSM Music Theory Trainer for Positive User Reviews

ICloud syncIt would be really great if this app would sync between my phone and iPad so I can pick up on one where I left off on the other, otherwise my progress is limited to one device.Version: 1.0.2

I love this app, but I’d love it even more if you had a random button that went across all grades!I love this app, but I’d love it even more if you had a random button that went across all grades! I love this app and use it several times a week, initially, when I was learning and now to keep my mind thinking about music when I’m away from my instruments for a few days. I’d love this app even more if it featured a random question button that could just randomly select a question from any of the 5 grades… then another question… then another question, and so on! Many people, like me, start music theory at fifth grade. If I randomly select a grade I get all the new stuff at that grade, say the newest scales for that grade… but not much else. If I want to revise scales that were new for any other grade, I have to go to that grade… and then I’ll get peppered with nothing but the new stuff from that grade. A random feature across all grades would be a great revision tool for 5th graders. If there was a level choice beside it people could use that to revise up to their current grade, once they’ve achieved familiarity with the new stuff at their grade..Version: 1.0.5

Useful For Theory!Great to keep up on theory skills after lessons. I am doing Grade 4 theory and after a few minutes of playing this game I can already guarantee this is a fabulous app. Keep it up :) - AC.Version: 1.0.1

OMGLempar is a grade 1 and on ABSAM he’s on grade 3.Version: 1.0.2

Good attempt, work neededThis is a fresh release so I’m willing to put up with a few bugs and display issues. So far nothing has been a show stopper, with the biggest problem on my iPhone 7 being some of the items, the scales in particular, are very small and quite difficult to see as a result. There are also some display issues, such as text on the screen at the end of a quiz being in a container too big for the space allowed, so you only see part of the text and can just about work out what it says. One annoying issue is a Grade 1 quiz where I can’t get past a yellow “reasonable” effort, despite getting every question correct each time I try it! On the whole, this is a very positive app design and I may revise my rating from 4 to 5 stars over time if development goes in the right direction. I definitely recommend it despite minor problems, but would suggest it’s better suited to a tablet than a phone... at this point in time at least..Version: 1.0.1

Great app, but Grade 5 missing a couple elements of syllabusI am giving this a 5*, This has been a great help refreshing my Grade 1 to 4 knowledge but the following are missing from the new online syllabus Cadences Ornaments as written in a piece of music.Version: 1.0.5

Areas that need improving to make it 5*This app is good to test your base knowledge but has areas for improvement. If you make a true/false mistake, the app merely tells you that the correct answer is the opposite of what you chose. It would be a much more useful tool if the app showed the actual answer to the question so you could learn and improve, not just telling you that you should have chosen true/false. After all, this is surely the whole point of the app. On the whole though the app is a good place to enhance your theory knowledge..Version: 1.0.2

Lack of information on notes for each clefThe app does not contain all the notes for each clef in the basic (learning section) of the app. It would help enormously if a third slide was included that contained all the ledger line notes for each clef. Along with helpful mnemonics for each clef..Version: 1.0.5

GoodThis is a good training app. I don’t think it has practice exams. Simple and good..Version: 1.0.5

So far so good... as part of your studyVery pleased with my purchase. I use the app to complement the theory trainer books, music theory resources and my piano teacher. You'd never learn enough just using the app but as part of a mix of study techniques it's a great investment and good practise for the online exam. The only snag is that I think you have to unlock it grade by grade which is a pain if you only want to do grade 5 !.Version: 1.0.5

Very goodIt teaches you very good and you can learn about it!.Version: 1.0.2

Great addicting gameI love this game - it’s really helping to consolidate my learning and also teach me new concepts..Version: 1.0.2

Very good, with an inexcusable flaw…I’ve only used grades 1 & 2, for which this is an excellent* practice tool. However, it is clearly designed with the iPad in mind. On iPhone 11 Pro (so not even the smallest supported device), exercises such as intervals are so tiny, it’s hard work to read them confidently. It could be easily rectified by tweaking the layout to make them larger and remove useless borders. I’ll upgrade to 5 stars if that comes in a future update! (* - UPDATE: Having just done the grade 2 exam I’ve realised that the app hasn’t been updated for the 2020 syllabus changes, so make sure you don’t rely solely on it!).Version: 1.0.5

FinallyAfter years of wait, we have a great touchscreen resource for music theory. As with all applications, I have no doubt it will improve and become even more user friendly / streamlined as time goes by, but after a cursory completion of every stage from G1 to G5, with many questions varied and interactive, there is no doubt any reviews complaining about its first incarnation are missing the point, as this app will certainly help and not hinder. At £5 it is on the expensive side for many of my students, but certainly worth it, nonetheless. Well done, ABRSM..Version: 1.0

Good app, very useful teaching aidGood app, works well. How about now including an "unlock all levels" mode for teachers? I heartily endorse not letting pupils on to the next level until they have mastered the current one. But we teachers often demo the app, and we also encounter pupils who have come to us in order to address one specific theory problem. We're often too busy with teaching to play through all the levels ourselves!.Version: 1.0.2

Good - but some sections too small for iPhoneDon’t download onto iPhone if you have iPad unless you can buy the app and download to ‘many’ devices. Some sections too small to read on iPhone..Version: 1.0.5

Excellent appI am loving this app right now and I am learning how to play the piano at home! I have been doing extremely well and I managed to get to grade 3! I am also on grade 3 theory with my piano teacher..Version: 1.0.5

Learnt so much!!!I am studying for grade 5 music theory, at the start I didn’t know much but this app has helped me ALOT!!! This is such a great app worth every penny..Version: 1.0.3

Useful tool, needs updatingI’ve found this really helpful, I bought it last year when I was learning grade 1, thinking that it would see me through to grade 5, however abrsm have since updated the syllabus and the app has not been updated to reflect the changes. Still useful, but do not rely on it for revision purposes..Version: 1.0.5

Fantastic, Easy to UseFantastic app! I’m really enjoying using it to fit in some music theory study around my fat to day life. Very easy to dip into and do a quick lesson. Lesson explanations are clear and concise. Worth every penny!.Version: 1.0.5

£1 per grade! Some minor glitches but Abrsm said they will be ironed out on the next update. Excellent value but not for the complete beginner. I use this with my pupils. It is best suited as a revision aid as they are not easy! 🎼🎶🎹.Version: 1.0.2

Great appReally great app that is helping my students practise for their grade 5 theory outside of lesson times. Great that it’s so interactive. Julie.Version: 1.0

ChrisPThis is a brave try! There are still too many mistakes for a commercial package BUT as a self checking aid it is useful and youngsters will find it enjoyable. I downloaded it to my iPhone and could not easily read some of the small fonts in the exercises. The worst thing about it is the grudging ( and incorrect!) statement that I had got “most things right” when I had scored 100%. Typical ABRSM😊. Nevertheless worth £4.99.Version: 1.0

Convenient and usefulGreat experience. Please recode such that we can save our progress in each individual exercise and section. It’s frustrating having to redo a section every time I need to exit the app. Thank you :).Version: 1.0.5

Excellent but missing...This is really helpful in learning music theory and testing understanding - I would recommend purchasing it - apart from its missing explanations of ‘terms and signs’ in the knowledge and learning section... it just assumes you know all of these rather than gives an explanation which would make the app more comprehensive without having to look things up..Version: 1.0.5

This is a great appI’ve been playing this for a while now and it’s fantastic it improve my theory a lot I started of not knowing much but soon after some practise I managed to do great. I would recommend this app to everyone who isn’t really got at theory 😊😆😃😀😄😁☺️😉.Version: 1.0.2
