Kaizen Languages - AI Tutors for Negative User Reviews

AwfulI have been using this app for 30 minutes and can't even get through one lesson because of the terrible voice recognition. I'm just going back to Japan to practice with real people thanks.Version: 2.0.7

Great Lessons... but kind of disappointingI have been wanting to learn Japanese for a long time and this is the first app I have found that I actually like. The lessons are great and really improved my knowledge but it is disappointing you only have 1 lesson a day u less you pay. You shouldn’t have to pay to learn!.Version: 2.2.98

Voice problemsNot sure if it’s my phone or what but apparently this will not pick up my voice when I speak because it continually tells me to redo stuff because it will not pick up everything I say..Version: 3.2.10

Definitely needs some adjustmentsIt’s an amazing idea and almost could be a 5 star app but unfortunately it has terrible voice recognition (5年間日本語を勉強しました。) and plenty of errors within the written responses and with no way of flagging any of the errors I think it would be hard for the developers to amend these issues..Version: 2.2.6

I haven’t even managed to get past a simple greeting as it says I’m wrong when I’m not. All it asks you to say is 私の名前は…です and it won’t accept my response. I have written the same thing several times, the exact same way that it asks me to, and it constantly says I’m wrong even though I know I’m not. I studied Japanese in uni, so I’m pretty sure that I know how to say “my name is”..Version: 2.1.16

BadBro none of it’s right it spells everything wrong like how konnichiwa is for some reason spelt konnichiha dumb.Version: 2.2.92

Only useful thing is flash cardsTrying to speak to this app is like trying to talk to a brick wall. It doesn’t even let you finish 99% of the time and tell you that you are wrong on a part you never even got to say. The 1% of the time it does let you finish it is so far off it isn’t helpful.Version: 3.4.0

Could be betterSo what’s actually here (in terms of content) in the app seems fine, no real issues there. My problem is with the app itself. In the chat function with the AI, as far as I can tell it’s impossible to scroll up and see the rest of the conversation beforehand and (more crucially) the flash cards if there’s long instructions, and when you start typing, you can’t scroll along what you’ve written to reread/edit it. These scrolling issues are in various places throughout the app (even when I very first loaded it and wanted to sign in using my google account, had genuine difficulty because the button was below the screen) and it’s honestly poor. For something so obviously designed to work on mobiles, it really should be better suited for them. Please fix this..Version: 2.2.62

Could be betterIt blocks out sounds and bugs out a lot, I don’t think you should be charging people if your app is super buggy..Version: 2.2.68

Awfully badI was looking forward to learning languages, the advert made it look like i could learn ANY language for FREE. however when i installed the app, it was just japanese which i was fine with because i am an otaku and i thought it would be useful for japanese lessons. i completed the first two conversations and everything on the app is unaccessible because i have to pay. i can't pay for apps so i am extremely disappointed. i never thought duolingo would be a better option, but now here i am..Version: 2.1.2

Great, when it worksApproachable, helpful lessons that generally are pretty cumulative and well designed. Unfortunately it’s extremely glitchy and crashes constantly, gets stuck in loops, the audio processing will say you’re wrong even if you pronounce things perfectly (I once recorded the set phrase being said by the app and played it back to it and it said it was wrong!), will give corrections and suggestions for other parts of other conversations or dialogue options, or won’t show the vocab word options so you have to use a separate app/program to look up or translate things ready. I have been learning from it, but the level of technical dysfunction is crazy for a paid subscription service no matter how good the actual content is so I’ll likely be unsubscribing after this first month. The lessons are absolutely worth the $8 a month, but only if they work!.Version: 2.2.8

Worthless without paymentThe app advertises three free lessons a day but you actually only get two. In addition, the flash cards you “unlock” are also actually locked behind this restriction as well. The writing lessons also are locked. Basically all you can do for free is say 4 sentences a day, twice. If you want to make this a paid program, make it paid, but there’s no reason for it to be a subscription or for the free tier to be so limited - you may as well not have one..Version: 3.3.2

Absolutely do not recommendI downloaded it to try to improve my Japanese and in a few days all it improved was my ability to get annoyed, I don’t like how it talks to you in romaji by default without at least making it clear how to change that, I don’t like the excessive use of including pronouns which don’t need to be included because Japanese is a very context-based language, because of the use of unnecessary pronouns I’ve been told to put a “の” particle in a sentence where it wouldn’t make any sense to because I omitted a pronoun, I think the “streak” system is broken, I accidentally retook lessons for half of the days I used it, probably more I can’t think of, overall if I could I would give a 0, but I can’t so I give it a 1..Version: 3.4.8

DONT DOWNLOADTHIS IS WAY TOO HARD!!! I am saying the right words but it says I am doing it wrong!!! DO NOT DOWNLOAD!!!!!!.Version: 3.0.6

Needs work...I made an account today, and after two lessons you have to pay to continue learning. I have tried to figure out how to delete my account, and it is not clear on how to do so. I checked their website and it says to “Navigate to the Settings/Account Page in the app. And scroll to the bottom and select delete.” I have tried to do this, but the problem is that there is no button to delete the account. So I’m wondering how to delete my account..Version: 2.1.8

It’s okIt’s alright but I tried saying something in Spanish but it Celt auto correcting it and I got annoyed.Version: 3.3.2

Needs fine tuningI’ve been using this app (since I paid for it by accident and apple wont give me my money back) and it does need some work. In the Professions lesson, they ask you to reply “no or 家“ but when you reply with that, the answer is wrong and wants you to reply with yes. Also when adding -San to someone’s name like “Takahashi-San” it automatically replaces San with the number 3 making your answer automatically incorrect. It’s a cool idea, but the app needs some work....Version: 2.1.0

Found an errorI think the app is pretty great as is, but it can still be a lot better. The conversations can feel a bit robotic/fake which doesn’t help, and I don’t feel it is extremely useful for those who already know some Japanese. Also, when I sent my invite code to a friend, they said that it did not work for them, which I find a bit unfair..Version: 2.2.50

NopeCan’t even get past the sign in screen, just infinite loading, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling and no change..Version: 2.2.62

Sort of goodGood if you’re learning from scratch. Frustrating if you already know some Japanese. For example, I can’t use 貴方 because the app expects あなた, and I can’t say そうです because the app expects me to repeat the whole statement. It would be better to just be able to reply whatever is grammatically correct, in my opinion..Version: 2.1.40

Voice recognition is terribleGreat promise, but the voice recognition doesn’t work very well at all- often you will say exactly the phrase it wants, but it’ll just say ‘repeat please.’ No matter what you do- I can’t read kanji yet so I’ll bet it’s not hearing what I’m saying correctly despite the fact that I know my pronunciation is good..Version: 3.4.8

You have to pay for more lessonsIt was awesome until you had to subscribe, ugh annoying.Version: 2.2.16

It’s okayIt’s good but for me it has a flaw that frustrates me a lot. Sometime it’ll tell me I’m wrong and make me go back a few replies back. It’s super frustrating because I have to repeat the same phrases again when I already got them right. It’s very frustrating.Version: 3.4.4

Does not workDoes not let me sign in using email address after creating an account. Then sign up using Facebook and I can’t access the app at all . Please update to fix this.Version: 2.2.74

PurchasesI felt like it was looking like a great app until I realised the free section is extremely limited and if you want to pay it’s not a set rate you have to pay a monthly fee which I find expensive for what it is. Netflix is cheaper. Also one of the conversations lept going around in circles..Version: 2.1.44

A bit limitedGood for beginners but its a bit annoying how grammatically correct/natural answers get marked wrong because its not the prescribed answer. the AI could probably be a bit better..Version: 2.2.60

Too many flaws!Correct answers, including sentences from the suggestions, are frequently randomly marked as wrong, often causing loops that make lessons unfinishable. Lessons sometimes hang, forcing you to restart them. While some activities give you some word choices (such as different colours and names), others only allow you to say a very specific sentence (e.g. 'I hate dancing' or 'I don't like singing') which may be very different than how you actually feel about the topic. In some activities, the app marks gramatically correct first-person Spanish sentences as wrong when you omit 'Yo.' The English translations of both Spanish and Japanese phrases also have several misspellings and sometimes wrong grammar. The streak randomly goes down to 0 even when you meet your daily goal the previous day. The customer service takes too long to respond, sometimes forgetting to do so altogether. I have sent feedback regarding the streak problems and the team has kindly but unsuccessfully attempted to fix my streak three times. I do not recommend this app for learning Spanish and/or Japanese..Version: 3.3.6

It’s okay. It’s good for practice. But sometimes I fell it won’t progress unless I answer a question a specific way. Four example; asked me if I had any Japanese friends I chat with. I don’t. The lesson would Inevitably come back to the question until I said yes. This example comes up many times. Good app, but no substitution fo a real 先生。.Version: 2.1.42

I finished the lessons now what?I finished all the lessons and I wanted to review the Flashcards. You only can do 10 at a time and often they repeat the same 10 over and over. Will you ever allow users to control how many flash cards they view at one time? That would definitely help with the longevity of the app..Version: 3.2.0

Doesn't allow for more advanced learningI have been learning Japanese for three years. However my confidence in speaking is very poor, and I was so looking forward to being able to develop my skills using this app. However, instead of writing in Japanese kanji, like this 六時です (it is 6 o'clock), it wants me to use Romanji and write it this way: Roku ji desu. It's very frustrating, because the way I have written it is still correct, but the AI doesn't understand it! I paid £7.99 for the month to give us a go, I couldn't be more disappointed. Please please develop the app to make it what it should be!.Version: 3.4.8

Not good for advanced learnersSo, I really wanted to test my speaking with this app, but whenever I communicated something more than what the AI was asking for it marked it as wrong! This might be good for beginners, but I wish that it could just place you at a certain level and let you speak to your heart’s content!! Also, I did not want to subscribe and the 2 lessons were kinda boring..Version: 3.2.10

Good conceptI like the concept but there are more simpler ways to say things. Like to say what country are you from, it gives a really long phrase when you can just say, “kuni wa”, or “Doko Kara desu ka.” Also it has only phone support which means it is really small on an ipad and u can’t use it horizontally. However I do like this concept. Also I just realized, that this uses written Japanese. For example it says “watashi ha,” that is how you are supposed to write it but to say it, you’re suppose to say “watashi wa.”.Version: 2.2.74

CrashesThe app itself is perfectly fine, but now, whenever you click a lesson, try to open vocab or open pretty much anything, it crashes immediately..Version: 3.2.6

Great up until lesson 5.The app is great for beginners but when I got up to lesson 5 the bot says : “I’m from Japan” a second time and crashes . I have tried again multiple times but the same problem happens each time, hope you can fix this.Version: 3.4.4

App needs some fixesI am glad there are free lessons because this app needs some serious fixes before I would be willing to pay. Often the “teacher” will tell you a kanji word even though your settings are hiragana and there’s no way for you to know how to spell it. This needs to get fixed. Also MANY TIMES you will type the answer exactly correct and it will tell you that you are wrong and give a reason why that has nothing to do with what you said. Which is baffling. Basically the App concept is good. The execution is bad..Version: 2.2.58

Wish I could use itIt was absolutely amazing on the advert and even using it, but it’s ridiculously expensive after the first 2 lessons, wish it just had ads like Duolingo. Such a shame.Version: 2.2.8

The idea isn’t badThe idea of the app is amazing it takes a different route than other apps if you don’t know one part you can definitely do the other for example if you know what The answer is you can spell or pronounce it either way you’re learning the best approach that you want it’s just the audio doesn’t work sometimes even though I delete the app and re-download it i’m a very audio person so this really doesn’t help with pronunciation but if they fixed his bug I’m sure it would be perfect app.Version: 2.2.68

Very inconsistent and the lessons don’t work.Imma be straight to the point. I love the app, when it works it is the best app for learning Japanese out there. But…the lessons break a lot. I’m still working with Mizuki and the Nationalities lesson just won’t let me get past saying my own nationality. At first I thought I was spelling it wrong but it’s just not even accepting anything I put. Even when I put in the exact recommendation or when I type it in the romaji translation it still just asks me say it again..Version: 3.3.0

Non functional productWorked wonderfully until I subscribed then suddenly even though it correctly types what I say in the text box as I say it the instructor never understands what I’m saying. I have taken years of classes I am positive this is the programs fault especially given it writes what I say correctly then fails me. Update mizuke inoue 10/12 says please ask to buy this item. When you answer it corrects you and says try asking how much the item is. When you answer it shows the original question about purchasing. What is the answer you’re looking for here?.Version: 2.2.62

Great, for the most part.I really like this app because I don’t have a lot of opportunities to practice speaking Japanese. After answering a couple questions at the start I was placed at Level 2, and understood the first conversation prompt fine, but was prompted to introduce myself with my name. My name is Sam, but it comes across as さん, which gives an error because you shouldn’t use honorifics for yourself, or it comes across as さん like the number 3, and saying さむ turns into the kanji 寒, meaning cold. It kind of defeats the point of the app if I have to type in order to input my name. Edit: after testing typing in variations of サン and サム, those don’t work either. It’s frustrating that it’s very limited, the only option being the name Jon. It’d make more sense having some options to pick from when you first download the app or an option to add your name in katakana so that the app recognizes it..Version: 2.2.22

Pay to learnHey! I think this app is a waste of time. You only get 2 free lessons and then you have to pay to continue learning. The way they teach is very helpful but you can’t even learn if you don’t have a lot of money and/or cannot afford it..Version: 2.2.54

PotentialIts blocked by a paywall when this is explicitly a free app, it offers nothing thats better than duolingo.Version: 2.0.4

Needs workSpeech detection needs work. Very often it would take the first syllable of a sentence and stop listening. Found it struggled often to correctly interpret what was being said. Huge potential but too frustrating trying to battle with the voice recognition to beat out your whole sentence..Version: 2.2.98

:|I learned nothing new..Version: 2.2.50

My answers are marked wrong when they are correctThey will say I have a wrong answer when it is obviously correct. For example, I would write a sentence in Japanese and they said it was wrong because The sentence wasn’t supposed to be in a question form with ‘ka’ at the end of the sentence. But, I did not have a ‘ka’ at the end of the sentence. There were a few other things they marked me wrong and I was in fact correct..Version: 2.1.16

Numerous bugsApp frequently gets stuck in an endless loop forcing you repeat the same sentence (correctly) until you get fed up and close the app to restart the lesson. Then magically it works! Many, many spelling and punctuation mistakes, instructions missing words, instructions saying a different thing than is typed..Version: 2.1.44

Bad AI and speech is not interpreted very wellI previously studied Japanese and wanted an app to help me continue regularly practising. I got Satoshi the chef and the first lesson was okay bar the correction thinking I was used “zenzen” in a sentence when I actually used “tokidoki”, but the second lesson was terrible. I couldn’t diversify my responses beyond very generic sentences and it felt too basic for me. Speech wasn’t interpreting very well as it uses no punctuation and if you stop for more than 2 seconds it auto sends the sentence. You don’t get the chance to edit what it has interpreted before it’s sent. It then bugged out after he asked me if I liked J-POP and J-ROCK as the correction was telling me to reply with how I found studying Japanese. Improve your AI’s corrections and don’t auto send the speech interpretation so there’s a chance to edit any words mistakenly heard. I’ve deleted the app and warn others with prior Japanese language knowledge against using it..Version: 2.1.44

RomajiPresently learning Japanese from home, I avoid romaji like the plague when studying this language. I note the instruction boxes contain Japanese words typed in romaji at each level. This app is an excellent innovation for learning Japanese. If the words typed in romaji were replaced with kana and kanji at the more advanced levels I believe this app would be more user friendly for students of the language who don't use romaji..Version: 2.1.34

NoTerrible way of learning, forces you to speak one way and limits you from being creative in your speech. It also just pretends that plain form doesn’t exist aswell as verb and adjective conjugations.Version: 2.1.34

It’s okay but could’ve improvedIt’s good for a first time use, until you find out that you have to pay to learn a language. Right now I’m trying to learn Japanese bad Korean, but sadly Korean is not in the list of things you can learn on this app. It’s complicated to have to pay for something like educational things and to be honest it’s kinda upsetting that I need to pay to learn a new language. I’m not saying that you should download this app but just know that you have to pay 7.99 monthly just to learn something new. You most likely would be better off using Duolingo if you can’t afford to pay monthly.Version: 3.4.2

Could be betterGood app, but I can only do three lessons per day?? It’s ridiculous in my opinion.Version: 3.0.4

Has potentialHad this app for about four days now, using the free version, but I’ve been enjoying it thoroughly until today all audio files has mysteriously stopped working. Also in Mizuki lesson 5 it looped and a bit bugged out. I was told the response I repeated and then it said It was wrong and changed the response so I repeated the new suggestions and it was ok? But it did that for the next question too. Also froze when I open the ‘type’ keyboard. Was thinking about buying it but if there is bugs in the free version then I’m sure there are more. Hope the audio can be fix. Thanks.Version: 2.2.68

This thing speaks nonsense “Japanese” and can’t understand konnichiwaOn the very first lesson, it wants me to say konnichiwa. I do I say it right. It doesn’t understand me. It asked me to repeat. So I gave the thing to my native Japanese speaking wife and it couldn’t understand her either. So we couldn’t get past that at all. I’m glad it was free. really the Japanese that it says or writes is complete babble. If the developers want to contact me or respond, so I know I’d be happy to entertain any suggestion and update my review and rating accordingly if necessary. Otherwise it’s getting deleted..Version: 3.4.12

Great... for a little while. So far so good, but it seems to have trouble recognising what I’m saying. A name, Inoue is pronounced phonetically. I repeat it and repeat it but the stupid AI doesn’t accept it. And that’s me imitating the speech pattern of the AI. It’s deeply frustrating and is preventing me from progressing any further. So, it was great up to that point..Version: 3.1.2

Lesson 4There’s is a problem whit lesson 4 in Japanese when I say where I comme from she tells me she does not know what I’m saying even if I said it properly. I also tried with a recording of her she dose not let up and say that she does not understand please fix this problem. Thank you.Version: 3.4.4

This AI is trashThe idea is nice, but chatting with someone that actually knows Japanese is at least 10x better if not 20..Version: 3.4.8

EhhMy name (Bug) doesnt even register as a name when sending a text 😐.Version: 3.2.10

Some changesWould be better if we can open past lessons without doing the whole lesson again..Version: 2.2.98

AWFUL DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIMEI downloaded it to continue with my training, since I follow classes at university. It is a complete waste of time. The app doesn’t understand you and even corrects you when your sentence is right. Plus everything is so random! I don’t recommend it at all..Version: 3.2.10

It's Okay- Needs a Support OptionI use this app in addition to several others, Kaizen is probably my least favorite. You have to pay to really do anything in the app which is fine if you're serious about learning, but the further you get in the lessons the more I've seen typos from incorrect words, genders, spellings & even the app marking things as incorrect that are not. It would be better if there was a way to "report" such as Duolingo has when you come across errors within the app. I can only imagine how many people have seen these errors and taken them to be true. One lesson I saw どけい being translated as clock when it is in fact とけい. When using the word "father" the speakers constantly referred to father as "she" among other errors. Lastly, the hints/suggestions it gives you for responses are very restrictive and leave little room for you to practice outside of exactly what they want you to write. The app is definitely helpful for learning but I wouldn't use it as my only method for learning Japanese. Bunpo is great for people looking for something other than Kaizen to learn..Version: 3.4.6

Cool appI like this app but wish it gave a little more instruction on how to practice - should I be repeating the conversation drills? Also, I wish the audio for the flash cards would play automatically instead of having to manually hit the play button..Version: 2.2.92

No thanks...I prefer japanesepod101.com. it's completely free to sign up for, and it goes way more in-depth than this. i finished the first two conversations in this app in five minutes... not good at all :/ it felt more as if i were just repeating the bot rather than actually having a conversation, and it would be more useful if it was written in hiragana rather than romanji, because not a lot of people write in romanji.... really not good at all......Version: 2.1.2

Good but there are some glitchesI use this app and LingoDeer together since it’s hard getting proper language practice with just one app. This app teaches you written Japanese which is not how it’s spoken. I don’t know if maybe this is noted later or not. I also noticed some answers it would not take even though it was correct. For example, it wanted me to say “私は田中です。” and I did but I wrote the name in hiragana. It kept telling me that sentence was wrong. This has happened more than once and is a bit annoying. Anyone who has been forced to use an online math program knows this pain. There are also times where it asks you to make a sentence like “私の父は____さいです。” and then do another one for a different family member. It then immediately says you are wrong because it wanted the father sentence again. If it doesn’t get fixed I will most likely delete the app..Version: 2.2.82
