Matter: 1% Smarter Every Day for Negative User Reviews

Was inevitable but…After the inevitable premium subscription that every app has today was introduced, I was hoping the free version of this would have more features than Instapaper’s - namely, unlimited highlights and full-text search. It doesn’t, so I’m switching back. A read it later app isn’t worth double what they charge..Version: 2.9.1

Took my newsletters hostageWorked to convert all of my newsletter subscriptions to my Matter email. Opened the app today to find that I can’t read them without paying $60/year. That’s…truly an awful business model..Version: 2.9.1

No more Free Unlimited HighlightsThe only aspect that Matter outdoes Pocket (getpocket) is its unlimited highlight features. Now that the feature is locked behind Paid/Premium, good bye to Matter and let's get back to Pocket!.Version: 2.9.1

App is unusableLoved the pitch of this app but as soon as I purchased a subscription and started adding my feeds the app became unusable. Scrolling is laggy when it works which is about 40% of the time. Always stuck synching. I have never been able to load a single article. Immediate regret..Version: 2.9.1

Don’t waste your time. It’s a complete waste of your time. Also they read take all your data. Don’t believe such nasty apps..Version: 2.12

Infuriating to use!A friend highly recommended Matter to me. It sounded like just what i wanted….an app to consume huge amounts of online and email content, annotate and save just the bits i wanted and then keep them for later use. But, after hours of giving Matter a go, I’m ditching the app. Maybe its just too early in the apps development cycle, but I found it confusing, frustrating and maddening to use..Version: 2.2

Fantastic app, for “supported” appsI read the Wall Street Journal, Economist and New York Times and saved different articles to matter. I loved being able to mark up parts of the article but it doesn’t work for the Wall Street journal app. It just shows some of the article and that’s it. For the other two, it works and I love how matter works with them!!!.Version: 1.8.4

Please update the description - this is effectively subscription onlyThis app is now only really useable with a subscription - and not a particularly cheap subscription either..Version: 2.9.1

Hard to useI get where you’re going but try to respect normal usability… Pull down should be refresh not search Back is top left not bottom left Remember that your users spend most of their time on other apps. Don’t make them relearn the interface… Also what is the difference between queue and subscriptions?.Version: 2.2

How to save from WSJ?Couldn’t figure out how to save full article behind WSJ paywall. I tried share articles from my wsj app but still asked to login wsj account in matter.Version: 2.9

Chose my alt-twitter accountI’d like to use this app, but I don’t receive a lot of gmail newsletters. Twitter is probably the place I’d like help following “good reads”. But when I used the Matter app to connect my Twitter, the app connected to an alt account, and I can’t figure out how to use my main Twitter account. I have tried disconnecting Twitter from Matt, going to Twitter iOS app, enabling my main Twitter account, reconnecting Twitter in iOS. But it still selected the alt account..Version: 1.8.6

No longer freeAt this price is rather pay for Pocket or Instapaper with more features and less bugs. Bye Matter!.Version: 2.8.2

Deletes my newslettersI successfully forwarded a variety of newsletters to Matter in an effort to clean up my inbox and enjoy reading newsletters all at one time rather than muddied with my other emails. Only a few weeks into using that or I realized that it was limiting the number of newsletters I could have in my inbox and automatically deleting them from matter, they weren’t even in my Matter archive. (I can however, find these newsletters in the archive of my email, but how am I supposed to remember which newsletters have and have not come through Matter and which ones have been deleted?) I really love the idea of this platform but wish I could have an unlimited number of newsletters in my Matter inbox. I’ve missed so many newsletters that I don’t even know about in the month of December after trying to use this..Version: 1.5.1

Cannot subscribe PocketHey I know this app is great, but I cannot successfully connect to my Pocket account because I use Google to login. It just keep refreshing and ask me to login again and again, I guess that’s not your problem but I really need to connect with my Pocket account. Thanks for ur work!.Version: 2.8.2

Great product but……subscription charge is an expensive dealbreaker. No speed reading either. Will consider joining if the prices change..Version: 2.13.1

Can’t add random contentMaybe I’m missing the point but I can’t add random content I want to read later. I was also extremely annoyed that I had to create a handle and upload a photo after logging in. I suspect it wants to share what I read. I just wanted a read-later app for some blogs, newsletters, web pages and PDFs. That sure isn’t what this was—I could only add content from a very limited set of writers’ blogs. This might have set a record for the fastest I’ve ever removed an app..Version: 1.8.1

Good app until they tried a misguided way to monetizeI liked this app, then they hamfisted a paywall in. They are charging me to view my newsletters. Content other people created, they are charging for. I am happy to pay for good features which they had, but now I can’t bring myself to pay to read a third parties content that I actually already pay for. This was a huge misstep and I hope you guys figure it out. You lost a customer by doing this so poorly..Version: 2.9.1

Locking featuresI was a huge fan of this app, but very disappointed to see that they have decided to lock all features behind a subscription paywall (a vastly expensive one for what the app offers). I understand moving to a paid model, but removing basic features like managing your subscriptions makes it pointless unless you pay. As a service I always think you have to be very careful of removing features, adding a paid functionality for new features is a much better approach - otherwise you just upset your pre-existing user base. Disappointing that I’ll be moving to a different app..Version: 2.9.1

Too expensiveI can't afford it thought I like it☹️.Version: 2.13.1

Doesn’t workIt would have been great to try this app out. Alas, it’s been days now that I’m stuck at the registration screen since I’ve sent my email address at least 10 times but never received the reply with the activation link. No, I’ve checked my spam folder, it’s not even there. Thanks for nothing?.Version: 2.5.6

Unsatisfactory. This is a meh app at best. It promises a lot, and fails to deliver. Not all that different from Instapaper and Pocket, it’s an extra inbox step for your workflow. You are better off with rss readers and other tools than using this. I lost interest quickly..Version: 2.5.6

Elegant UX but serious parsing issuesFirst off, this app has a fantastic user experience. I have used many such read it later apps and Matter seems best to understand the ideal reading flow, merging it with an RSS reader that features an easy triage mechanism via swipes in individual articles. Reading in Matter is pleasant and one doesn’t get distracted by too much interface clutter or complicated but unnecessary functionality. That said, many articles I save are incorrectly parsed. The frustrating thing is that sometimes it is not evident that they are incorrectly parsed until a thorough comparison to the original is made. For example, one recent article saved from Blogger was missing several paragraphs in the beginning of the article and various sentences throughout. These omissions changed the meaning in some places leading me to generally distrust Matter to such an extent that I must look elsewhere for my more serious reading until the parser improves. The Readwise Reader beta handles the same articles without issue and despite preferring the Matter interface I cannot recommend it for non-trivial reading of perhaps non-mainstream sources at this time. Furthermore, Matter has an interesting take on following authors, which sounds useful until one realizes that virtually none of the authors I read are present. Again, Matter really caters to those who might read from very popular sources exclusively but to me that seems to negate the utility of a read it later app altogether. In similar vein nearly all of the RSS sources I add, the app notifies me, have been added for the first time, which would be fine but then I am told that there will be an indeterminate delay in fetching from them and no further guidance is given. The entire RSS flow could use some work. Overall, useful if most of what you read is from The NY Times, Medium, etc. But, if your interests lead you to more obscure articles scattered about the web (what to me seems the primary use case for such an app), then I would recommend looking at the forthcoming Readwise Reader..Version: 2.7.1

DisappointsI was really interested in this because it advertises itself as an all-in-one reader, and mentions blogs even in the search bar inside the app, but you cannot follow blogs with the app. It works to import your email newsletters but beyond that it has a very limited amount of writers you can follow. There’s no way to add other blogs to it manually. I really don’t understand why there isn’t a way to add the blogs you want to follow. They just say that you can submit a request to staff to add a writer. I tried that but never heard back. Very odd product. I’m a little concerned that it might just be a ploy to get data access to your email contents. I would definitely use this if it was possible to follow blogs with it, but for now it does not meet my needs, and I will likely be revoking the data permissions and deleting the app..Version: 1.1.8

Feeds locked without warningI had read everything about Matter’s new premium mode (email, in-app announcement) and it wasn’t clear at all that unless you paid $60 a year, your RSS feeds would be totally unreadable. 😭.Version: 2.9.1

Add writers + feedsLove the read later functionality and the new highlights to Obsidian! Both deserve 5 stars. But I searched for 50 authors and only two were available. That’s 1-star territory. I’m intrigued by the whole “follow authors, not feeds” thing, but that only works when authors are followable. I requested a bunch of authors, but not sure anything is happening. Please just let me add feeds and authors. That would make Matter matter to my daily workflow..Version: 1.5.3

Unusable without premium subscriptionI’ve been using matter for months and log in today to find my feed completely locked down without purchasing a premium subscription. No warning, no real explanation. I now have to pay to see my own emails that have been there for months…. I’m all for subscriptions, but locking down all your existing features and not adding anything new of value when launching a premium sub is just bad strategy. What was free now costs money, and that is naturally frustrating. Especially when that thing is free in many, many other places on the web..Version: 2.9.1

Absurdly Expensive, weird social featuresThis app is the shiny new thing for internet nerds, but I can’t see a good reason to pay the absurdly large subscription fee. Moreover, why does this app need to collect your contacts?.Version: 2.9.1

Was a big fan but now they got greedyI loved this app. It seemlessly added stories from many platforms for later reading. I, however, relied on the audio “read” function to listen to the stories. The audio function had bugs but I was willing to overlook them. Now I found out they have put the audio function behind a premium paywall. Are they asking $6, $12? No - $60!!! This is ridiculous. Unfortunately- time to start looking for a new reader. Sadly so..Version: 2.9.1

Would be amazing if it workedLag time on scrolling is insane. Lag time on opening articles is crazy, if you are lucky enough for them to open at all. Audio controls have really bad lag time and often don't open at all. Audio reading is super buggy & drops for as much as 2-3 minutes between sentences. Features are amazing, if only they work..Version: 2.7.2

Why do you need my phone number??I have privacy concerns. Why would you need my phone number? Please make that optional..Version: 1.5.1

RSS is a major flawI love so much about this app but the rss feature is almost completely useless. I have a standard rss reader app running simultaneously and it’s shows 18 articles available from my feeds for today. Matter shows two. Two! Also it says it can’t find feeds for a few urls (which work fine I every other app.) I wish I had known this before paying $60/year. (Good luck trying to find the monthly option in the app) The app is excellent in every other way but now I guess I have to have a second app just for rss since I can’t rely on Matter to actually do the most basic rss serving. I hate writing a negative review of this app but for the price the rss should be rock solid (also it’s a pretty basic feature). Will gladly change my review when app can parse rss feeds at least as well as reader could almost twenty years ago..Version: 2.10

Lots of potentialThis is so far my favorite read later app. However, it still has many space for improvement. First, sometimes the app does not download the content correctly, especially images, or the format is off. Also, the highlight feature is really not working, it was never able to select the paragraph I try to highlight, so please fix this problem. Lastly, keep the good work!.Version: 1.8.3

Has promise but limited at momentThe app has a lot of promise in terms of being able to do text-to-speech recognition — something I think is super useful. Unfortunately, there are only a handful of authors who this is available for at the moment, and their support has been non-existent in terms of answering questions about importing new authors. I’ve reached out several times and never heard anything back. That being said, if more people I’m interested in reading can be added using that feature, this app could become everyday use for me..Version: 1.1.7

En Français SVPImpossible d'avoir en français? je n'ai pas réussi a comprendre cette APP..Faites un effort pour le choix de langues, pour 2 étoiles de plus ⭐️.Version: 2.10

Absurd pricingFor what this app is, a read it later app, it is absurdly priced. Apps like this shouldn’t be charged on a subscription, much less at the rates these guys are charging. This app will go the way of all the others that charge too much and will eventually die. Look for more sustainable options..Version: 2.12

2 stars for locking a feature behind premiumOriginally added a site to subscription when first installing the app. Now it seems this feature has become premium and means I can no longer manage subscriptions. This has had the knock on effect of meaning you are also unable to remove any existing subscriptions and are stuck with whatever was already added previously..Version: 2.9.1

Beautiful app but fails on a key promiseMatter is a truly beautiful and very functional app for read-it-later purposes. It did replace pocket for me as I just find it more slick and minimal. The audio feature is incredible as well. However, as much as I love it, the reason I got it initially is because it promises to aggregate your email newsletter and become "one inbox for everything". Well, I tried to set up email forwarding to my matter address. I tried re-signing-up for newsletter with the matter email. No luck with any options they phone. I contacted their support twice - silence. And unfortunately, lots of key writers I follow are not yet "on the platform". I requested them with no response either. For those that are directly on Matter, their posts often lag many hours behind the email newsletter which I get earlier and it can't get imported into Matter. Another big drawback right not is that there's no way to read and highlight content on desktop. All in all, it has a lot of promise, but it doesn't yet deliver. And for a startup, I'm surprised at the lack of engagement with the early users..Version: 1.3

App looks great until reading the fine printI would strongly urge anyone interested in this application to read their privacy policy. I was simply shocked. Sure, the application is free, but is free worth handling over every single piece of information you provide them? And I mean EVERYTHING! Even passwords aren’t off limits. Go with a paid alternative, unless you want to be completely freaked out if they get hacked..Version: 2.2.2

Stripping down features for the very expensive Premium subscription? What a pity. I was literally in the middle of adding new sources when your business plan changed. The app updated itself and suddenly It was as if I was dealing with a completely different crippled software. I’m moving to something with one-time payment and regret spending the time to set up for filters and newsletter forwarding..Version: 2.13

PriceyDesign is nice. I think it feels a little incomplete in terms of its interface. Personally I can’t justify paying a subscription for basic features like highlighting and RSS—let along a subscription of $80 a year..Version: 2.9.1
