Grace 4 for Positive User Reviews

Grace-picture exchange for non verbal peopleGreat app but really need the ability to add new catagories any chance of an update?.Version: 2.0.1

Great app!I am a mother of an 11 year old daughter with autism. She has been using her communication book (a binder with lots of pecs) for a few years. After a while, she no longer wanted to use her book at home. I am guessing it was because of the size of her binder and maybe she became frustrated because she didn't have all the pictures she needed to express herself. So I was thrilled when I learned her school had introduced her to an iPod Touch with a communication app. That thrill was short-lived. Once I got over the cost of the app (even though it's better than the $1400 they wanted a few years ago for a big, bulky communication device), her teacher noticed that Lauren was relying on the app to talk for her. It took her years to start using her own words. I most certainly didn't want her to lose her voice. While researching the app that is being used in Lauren's school, I stumbled upon Grace. Despite the quantity of reviews and ratings, I decided to read further. Once I read that Grace doesn't have sound, I WAS HOOKED. Hello!! Not having sound is key! It encourgaes your child to interact AND use his/her own precious voice! I also want to note the following to dispute the negative reviews: (1) The developers are legitimate. Just reference the links listed above to their websites or check out Facebook to witness the hard work they've done to assist those in need. (2) I had no problem contacting Lisa Domican. She responded quickly to my email. She was very helpful & very generous. Her assistance exceeded my expectations and is greatly apprecated. (3) This tool IS simple, but not limited. Simple is good for a child with autism. If they get overwhelmed, they will just become frustrated. You can easily customize the app by adding your own pictures. I've always preferred the "real" pictures as opposed to cartoon pecs anyway. (4) This app is much more practical than the "paper system" mentioned in OSullivan's review. No more lost pecs and no more waiting to create, laminate and velcro new words added to your childs vocabulary and no more bulky 3-ring binders. WOOHOO!!! If your child or loved one is accustomed to using a picture exchange system, I am confident they will catch on to this app. It's simple and VERY ECONOMICAL. Even though the Touch is intended as a Christmas present, I just had to have Lauren give the app a test run today. She easily navigated thru the app; and unlike anoher app, making corrections to her sentence was a breeze. So far, I've only added about 40 pictures, but she was able to tell me she wanted a purple toy and what she wanted to eat for dinner :) Kudos to the developers! Thanks for making such a helpful and affordable app for our loved ones!!.Version: 1.0.1

Great Idea & Applicaiton - Love it!My 4 yr old son is diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder with a severe speech delay and is currently using the picture exchange communication system (folder) to communicate. I am so excited about this application. Yes it does need some more functionality to enable the user to categorise photos and add to current categories however the basis of picture exchange is there and it's so much easier than printing, laminating, velcro, replacing lost pictures, having too many pictures to fit in a folder etc. I love it - congratulations on the idea and making it happen. Much easiler to carry around and love how the large picture sentence appears when you turn it sideways this will certainly help as we have had adults struggling to read small picture cards without glasses! Great price making it affordable for families who are doing it tough with so much therapy(I think I have spent that much on velcro alone). Good for communicating back to the child. Please keep this going, it will help so many children and families. Have only just loaded it so will see how my son goes over the next few weeks. Looking forward to the next update, you deserve an award! You really need to promote this app, I only found out through a friend..Version: 0

Consultant PsychologistFantastic - what a brilliant idea! I am a Psychologist working with many, many individuals with autism. I can't begin to tell you how this is going to transform the lives of so many individuals I work with. Looking forward to further developments!.Version: 0

Great PECS-like, silent communication app for SLPs, teachers, parentsI highly recommend this app that helps children communicate. A must for Speech Language Pathologists, Special Education, Autism, teachers, parents and siblings will find this Augmentative Alternative Communication app useful. Updated Grace app 3.0My daughter used Grace app for 4 years. Grace app updated for 3.0 this year, it's better than before. It is very easy to use rename and right size photo. Now I don't need another apps for photo borders, caption label, etc. Grace app should be enough, very simple to use rename, you do yourself add picture what child need. Thank you for updated 3.0. Good job. :-.).Version: 3.0

This app does what it says it will and does it well.I am writing this review as an iPhone developer who understands Autsim through a family member and also the system Grace App is putting in place. I am also writing this because I feel passionately that every word of the previous revue is hurtful to the developer and the Autistic community as a whole. The App is not intended to have sound. The system is not intended to speak for the learner but to help them find their voice. This is clearly written above. This is not Flash, it is not cheap. iPhone development costs hundreds of dollars per hour and requires deep understanding of memory management. There is a very good reason why iPhone DOES NOT SUPPORT FLASH. The support email and websites work just fine. If they did not at first the issue has been fixed. I contacted the developers to discuss the app. No corporate entity would make this app. If I thought it would be a profitable App I might even try to do it better myself. The App is made by a mother of two autistic children who is spending valuable time away from them and a developer who is donating his time to work with her to bring it to the public to help others. There are a handful of apps designed for Autistics in the App store. Near as I can each one is effectively a donation to the community even at a $39 price. If you want to see better apps for autistics and ongoing improvements I would recommend buying this and every other app that is out there so they can continue working. If you see a problem provide the developers with feedback so that you and they understand what is needed..Version: 0

BRILLIANT! Highly recommend this App.So happy that I bought this App. It was simple to set up and easy to change the text to make the picture names consistent between home and teachers at school. We did delete some pictures and have added and named our own. We will keep adding to these as we need to. We are not using the voice over, we use the pictures to prompt our daughter to try and say the words. Great App thank you!.Version: 3.0

Organization and usefulThis is a great app. Very useful to some people who are supplimenting thier communcation with visual cues. Next wishful addittional and sound / speech to visuals and allow voice recording customizable folders and importing your own pictures is one of the winning features..Version: 2.0

Great electronic version of pecsSuper start to a usable pecs system. Like options to add own photos . Needs more word sentence starters or makers, such as asking questions like "where","why","how do","who","what",and "when". Need a category of verbs, adjectives, and adverbs to build sentences if the child is able to. Also a catergory for times with digital times and general morning, afternoon, evening, and night words to select. AM and PM would also be nice. This would give them a way to discribe their thoughts about activities and objects. an emotion category is also missing. just the option to add our own categories would be great!.Version: 2.0.3

Wonderful communication aid that just got better!I love this app. It used to be great, and now it’s great and beautiful! The new artwork, and new features are terrific. It’s great to see such a helpful app being improved so. No distractions; just a great tool for aiding in communication via an elegant and flexible point and tap interface. Extensible via use of the camera and camera roll, so you’re not limited to the images that come with the app..Version: 3.1

Perfect now since April updateIf I was going to write a PEC application - this is EXACTLY how it would be. Best app in App store.Version: 2.0

YaY For Grace AppUnlike some negative reviews, I can say that the App Description is perfectly clear , and adding more content into the Grace app is quite simple , I was able to add 12 folder sets via iTunes photo sharing and expanded my Grace iconography to contain hundreds of new special needs requests , and whatever image I don't have , I can get it on Google Image Search. It is unfortunate how some users care more about the cost of this App, and less about it's simplistic & basic communication utilization method to initiate clarity to what may otherwise gone un-noticed. This Application Works Exactly as Detailed !.Version: 1.0.1

GraceThis is a fantastic app just what I was looking for for my non verbal son. Took into his school today for a session with SALT to try out with my son. He picked it up in no time and the therapists were really impressed with the system too. Just one comment when updates being considered is it possible to be able to add own pictures to the system categories rather than the customisable folder?.Version: 0

Worth all the praiseI really don't understand how anyone could make a ridiculous comment like "I thought it would be better" and not elaborate on how? Better than what?! My family have been using this app since it was released and I can only describe it as indispensable. Only those who have been through the major inconvenience of carting around huge folders to help their child express their needs and wants and effectively give them a voice could truly appreciate the convenience and ease of GRACE. This gives our young one a tool that she relates to and can use easily to express herself without the cumbersome inconvenience of an enormous folder and all the work that goes into it as their needs grow and change. I can see why this app has won awards it's a credit to the developers, I can't speak highly enough. Also gobsmacked that anyone would hesitate to pay a very reasonable price for a learning and communication tool that is in my opinion priceless! Obviously the developers are committed to it's continued development, clearly evident in the latest update. Frankly any negative comments about this app are in my opinion nitpicking and not helpful in the least. Like countless others, I think it's wonderful..Version: 2.0

Really the best thing since sliced breadFabulous! Beyond words. So simple I love it..Version: 2.0

Great for non-verbal speech studentsI think this app is great! Especially for my students who are able to produce speech, but are not motivated to use expressive language to communicate. I agree that the the function of adding your own photos need to be changed. I've added several new pictures but they show up all on top of each other..Version: 2.0

Fantastic for my non verbal autistic sonI have a non-verbal severely autistic son. I am also a qualified nurse. This is just up my son's street. He already uses PECS but this means that we don't have to lug his folder around if we go walking etc - its on my phone and easily accessible. He picked it up very fast (is an IT whizz), and I like the idea that turning the phone brings up the sentence/plan strip in big pics. Also loved that I could easily add his own pictures to the catagories. However I would like the ability to also add a catagory ie: people I know - for pictures of his varying TA's, respite helpers etc to enable us to build them into the system. Currently they are in places but that isn't that right place for them. It also seems to have a bit of an issue staying open - keeps flashing on and off when I open it. Sometimes closes all together. However for anyone with a child like mine who is verbally challenged and who is used to using visual aids it is great. You can't loose the pictures which happens all the time with the PECS folder! I highly recommend it. Would also be much improved if used on an iPad as pictures would be easier to see, but highly portable and practicle on the iPhone..Version: 2.0.1

AwesomeLove that pictures (& pictures of symbols or words) can be added into any category. Also the ability to arrange the pictures within the category is great. I hope future updates will allow me to add my own categories, and will increase the number of items that can be chosen in one series. Would it be possible to save chosen sequences so that a series of pre selected pictures would display with one selection (instead of having to re-select commonly used sequences)? Possibly there could be a category that has multiple picture sequences. Thank you for a very useful app!.Version: 2.0

Wonderful!Still the best app for those looking for a "true" PECS communication system for their iDevice. Lots of flexibility and perfect for those individuals with Autism just starting to find their own voice..Version: 2.0.3

Great job!I have been looking forward to using this app for a while now - but waiting until I had my iPhone as well as iPod touch. What a surprise to get it for free on Autism Awareness Day! Such a lovely, easy to use App - thanks for the free download and the new update. Looking forward to testing it out when my iPad 2 arrives :).Version: 2.0

This will work greatLooking forward to using this with my non verbal son. The only thing I would like to do is be able to remove existing categories as he will only understand the ones we make with photos and may get confused with the ones already on there..Version: 4.0.2

Great App with small issuesEasy to use although I also have the app flashing on and off on opening. Agree with the others, would be even better if we could make up our own categories..Version: 2.0.3

I like the appI love the app but I think it needs more cards..Version: 4.0.2

Great app!Communication is every person's right and this wonderful app allows those with autism to do this easily! Sure it can be improved - every app can - but the core is simple, functional and practical. It doesn't replace true interaction with an electronic voice which I think is necessary to promote eye contact between the child and caregiver - especially when speech is just starting. It's great that you can add pics and personalize the app for each user - but it will be good when they add the option for category sorting. It will also be helpful to expand on the categories to include "Things I need" for pencils and straws and boring stuff that one needs to ask for. I know that the woman who designed this product has used it to great effect with her own child and with other kids - and that it's been truly life-changing for a lot of people. I would totally give it a go!.Version: 1.0.1

Wow!I simply adore this update! Great job every one in making a great app even better :) GRACE is mostly to be used by people who use the PECS binder. The concept is the same, but I love that my autistic son is no longer carrying around a enormous (and heavy) binder with his pictures falling constantly off. The ability to be able to add pictures with the camera in the iPod makes working with the system very practical..Version: 2.0

Great as an electronic PECS system! This app is a wonderful replacement of physical PECS and a very good transition to AAC if speech does not develop. I like being able to re-order. Double tapping to remove from sequence is not my first choice, but I am not an autistic user. ;-) I do like that order is retained and other features of the selection row. Sizing if items would be nice for kids who have vision or motor issues combined with autism, that is one of my few knocks. A useful alternative for reaching kids with autism who are productive with PECS..Version: 2.0.3
