Morcombe & Stewart Guide for Positive User Reviews

βœ“ Top AppThis is the most expensive App I have purchased, but is worth every cent. I have had it on my iPhone for a year now and have just updated it to my IPad. Excellent!!. No more having to lug Bird Books with me on a bush walk. Always have the info on me as you never know when you will need to look up a bird picture or call. Comparison of two birds on the one page is great. If you are a genuine Birdo, - BUY IT !!! You won't regret it..Version: 1.2

βœ“ Surely this is the future of bird-watching?Highly recommended. I am a cautious App-buyer, especially expensive ones, but bought this less than a day ago and must have got my monies-worth already..Version: 1.0

βœ“ Excellent ApplicationThis is an excellent application that works really well on the iPhone. I have enjoyed the ease with which I can find birds but would like to be able to browse through the pictures as you can do in a traditional bird book... I suppose that may come with the iPad version which would have the larger screen real estate to play with..Version: 1.1.1

βœ“ Most successful bird app.I am very happy that you made this tool. When ever I am uncertain of a calli always check this app straight away. One thing you could improve on is the list. I accidentally added a bird incorrectly and hade to delete the list and start again. If you could fix this in the next update that would be greatπŸ‘ŒπŸ»πŸ––πŸΏπŸ–•πŸΏπŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‘πŸΌπŸ˜πŸ˜†πŸ€£πŸ˜‚πŸ˜….Version: 1.4.4

βœ“ Excellent Audio Visual GuideDownloaded onto iPhone 3GS after a recent trip to Western Australia. Beautiful illustrations and a large selection of audio samples for each species. This APP is based on the authoritative Michael Morcombe Field Guide to Australian Birds with the advantage of portability, audio samples and other smart search functions that the book cannot provide. Highly recommended for anyone with a passion for Australian Ornithology..Version: 1.0

βœ“ Brilliant! This is the most expensive app I have purchased and the best value. It is amazingly well designed and functions very well on the small screen. The smart find is very good and the audio calls excellent. I am not a bird nut, but like to be able to identify birds when I see them and this app is the perfect way of doing this. Congratulations to the designer for doing a fantastic job (as a software designer, I appreciate when I see it) . Suggestions: -Ability to select main colours in the smart find section -iPad version (please please).Version: 1.1.1

βœ“ Great AppHad the app a couple of weeks now and love it. Much quicker than looking up in a book. The compare feature is good and the recordings provide that extra important detail for identification purposes. The My List feature is good but it seems to be optimised for use in the field. I've been entering records for some birding trips I made in Nov and Dec and it's been very laborious. Whilst the app remembers the location I'm using, I have to correct the date for each bird I enter - it would be so easy if it remembered the last date used as it does for location. I would have liked to enter all of my older records but it would take too long. Pity you can't import an edited csv file. Despite this little issue, it's a great app and I highly recommend it..Version: 1.3

βœ“ Absolutely fantastic! Better than many of my bird booksIncredibly helpful illustrations showing birds of different ages/seasons/sexes. Beautiful illustrations and great feature of having bird calls and a map. The best and only bird app I need..Version: 1.5.2

βœ“ Best app ever!!!As a field guide myself, this app is a life saver. Thank you all the people who worked hard on it. I would say its worth $100 for the amount of detail, description and audio sounds that it's packed full of. To all you bird enthusiasts out there enjoy!! Thanks again ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.Version: 1.3

βœ“ Ditch those heavy booksThis app is revolutionary. There is no need to carry around heavy guide books anymore. There is a list function to catalogue sightings including gps coordinates. Other handy features include the location setting; the smart search and the audio clips. The location setting lets you narrow down the list by state. The smart search lets you search by size, colour or main feature. The audio clips are invaluable to help you identify different birds. Although I would hate to think if people playing them in the field and bothering birds. My only slight grumble is the artwork is slightly off sometimes..Version: 1.4.2

βœ“ Inexperienced bird watcher is astounded!I know very little about birds and often struggle (to the point of defeat) when I try and look them up in my bird book. Frequently it becomes an exercise in page turning. I splashed out on this app because of the reviews by people who seemed to know what they were talking about and I am absolutely rapt in my decision. The other reviews will give people with some bird knowledge what they need to know but if you're like me then I'll summarise why I am so happy that I bought this app. 1) The search function. Wow, this pretty much fixed my problem with finding birds. You can put in your location, size of bird, beak shapes, colours and other characteristics and it gives you a short list of candidates. I found on a recent camping trip that so long as I could get a few significant features then could usually identify the bird. Then I could bookmark it. 2) The pictures look like the birds. I know that this might sound odd to people who know their birds but I have looked at some bird books and never been sure. 3) The sounds of the calls. I originally didn't understand how useful this was until I had a couple of birds that looked similar. I played the calls and thought "aaah, that's why he put them in" as I confirmed the identity of the bird I was looking up. 4) Information provided is interesting and sufficient. He doesn't rabbit on in his descriptions. He tells you something interesting about the bird. I highly recommend this..Version: 1.3

βœ“ Brilliant and convenientMichael Morcombe's books have always stood out for their ease of use, excellent drawings (including nests and eggs) and clarity of geographical information. This takes it to a new height especially when teamed with David Stewart's bird calls. You can even select the calls of the particular local race of the species. If you're in doubt, you can do a comparison of 2 birds. Keeping a list of sightings is ease itself and I see potential for developments in the future. It's brilliant..Version: 0

βœ“ Great ReferenceThis is an excellent app, made even better with the recent update. Illustrations are clear, maps useful, and the bird calls very helpful in distinguishing similar looking species. I only wish that I could get similarly great apps for other Australian wildlife such as spiders, reptiles and mammals. Keep up the good work..Version: 1.1

βœ“ The Michael Morcombe eGuide to the Birds of AustraliaSimply brilliant piece of software for my iphone. Graphically superior, excellent art and identification features, live bird calls a real bonus, easy to navigate and find and identify. Will get whatever bird guides are available as I continue to travel and bird watch. This is a whole new era in bird watching and identification..Version: 1.0

βœ“ Brilliant! Educational. Worth every penny. This incredibly comprehensive bird guide taken from the well known Morcombe field guide is very intuitive to use and makes excellent use of the iPhone viewing functions. It is suited to beginners and experts alike and includes bird sounds to make identification and learning highly enjoyable. It could even be a sneaky way to get your kids out of the house and into nature! The smart search has a 'physical features' function that is currently more useful for keen birders and a 'bird looks like' function for those of us who can barely manage to say "It looks like a parrot." You can also change the default location so that only birds from your location are shown, saving you the headache of trawling through lists of birds that are never seen in your area. This is fabulous for travelling in Australia. The 'compare' function for two birds that look quite similar is very handy and is something a book can't do. Nor can a book play birdsong or sit lightly in your pocket when you go for a walk or hike. This combination of portability and function makes it really easy to be turned into an instant bird watcher! My appreciation of bird diversity has increased dramatically thanks to this app. It'll help you get your head out of the virtual world to enjoy the natural world of birds!.Version: 1.1

βœ“ I've been waiting for something like this.Just like I said. It would be the cherry on the cream on top if you could incorporate an ability to record calls in the field and have them analyzed. There's apps that can tell any song from playing 3 seconds so perhaps you could build it in in future. Just a suggestion but I think it would make this app just awesome, wicked and sick at the same time. I'll go back to being a Spangled Drongo now you pack of Galahs..Version: 1.0

βœ“ Fantastic appWhat a wonderful app. I totally agree. Forget about lugging around books any more. This is all you need for watching birds. However! It seems to be crashing a little bit. It may need looking at. But other than that, amazing app..Version: 1.4.4

βœ“ Great AppAs a fairly new birder, I have found the app really good for identifying birds I didn’t know. My only problem was I added a bird to my list which I later realised was incorrect but could not work out how to delete it from my list. Would be nice if you could add your own bird photo’s. Overall though I think it is well worth the money and better than carrying a book around with you..Version: 1.4.4

βœ“ Great app for bird identificationFirstly I know the man who collected the sounds (David Stuart) who was my neighbour and I have been on many walks with him and it has become a great app to use for kids (like me) and adults for Identifying bird species and secondly I have also been on tv with this app so therefor it is a great app and I encourage people to get it πŸ¦πŸ“±.Version: 1.3

βœ“ Wow!I have bought other birding apps specific to Oz, but this is the only one I need. With pictures, audio clips of bid calls, maps, descriptions, it outshines any other birding app. I can also track sightings, which I didn't realize til I was exploring the app. But since I'm new to birding, I don't always know what I'm looking at - the smart search feature is what makes this app worth $30!!! It may seem a lot, but it's cheaper (and smaller) than his amazing book. Totally worth the money and perfect for newbies!.Version: 1.0

βœ“ Exhaustive and very helpfulHave no idea what planet Profif is on. The search facilities are extensive and flexible. In addition to the alphabetic search (which is presumably the only thing he looked at) there is a taxonomic search, and a user-defined search function which allows you to specify a wide range of features to narrow your search by. As a newcomer to Oz with not much ornithological experience I am finding this app easy to use and very instructive. Don'tlet the one star review put you off..Version: 1.2

βœ“ Best App for Aussie TwitchersThis is easily the best app for australian twitchers. The pricepoint may be a dealbreaker for some, but this having this app in your arsenal is so very handy. It's extremely lightweight, has great distribution maps, beautiful illustrations and - the best part - several unique audio clips that accompany each bird. This makes it an invaluable resource both in the field and at home when you are wanting to brush up on your skills. This is the future of field guides. If you have any serious interest in watching australian birds, get this app. -AJ.Version: 1.0

βœ“ A real crippler!!!!Thank you, thank you, thank you... I'm a big MM fan so this is awesome. So vastly superior to any other Australian offering it's wrong to even compare. This has set a standard really high and seems to have incredible potential reading future plans. I won't get caught without a field guide ever again! Thank you for taking the time and effort to make such a great app..Version: 1.1

βœ“ Invaluable birding resourceThis app was much anticipated and exceeded expectations. I haven't used everything yet but it is well worth the money for ready access to the bird call recordings alone. Its always on-hand for opportunistic sightings, and the smart search is a great way to teach students how to classify and identify birds..Version: 1.1.1

βœ“ AmazingOn a holiday in North Queensland recently, I thought "It would be good if there was an app of a Field Guide for Birds." I wasn't really expecting to find one when I looked in the app store and certainly wasn't expecting an app as good as this. Love it. 1.4.1 The new update is a great improvement. The gallery view is good for flicking through when you have a pretty good idea what the bird looks like, but not what it's called.Version: 1.4.1

βœ“ Personal bird listI’ve used this app successfully for several years, and I have developed a nice list of bird sightings. Just purchased a new phone and downloaded the app no problems but my list is empty. Can I somehow move my list across or do I have to start again! Please help! I would hate to have lost that data!.Version: 1.5.2

βœ“ Best guide to Oz birdsNo other Australian bird app field guide comes even close. The book this app is built from still beats all for speed and ease of use and density of information, but that’s because a single digital screen will never equal 200 pages of β€œscreens”. Stop bashing the app and wait for the update to fix the app. Patience folks. This is software. :).Version: 1.5.1

βœ“ A terrific tool for birdwatching in OzI just returned from two weeks in Australia. I had both the Michael Morecombe β€œe-Guide to Australian Birds” mentioned above, as well as a paperback version of the Slater Field Guide to Australian Birds (2d ed). (Where I live, I use iBird extensively, and have the National Geo e-guide which i only occasionally use.) I found the e-guide to Australian Birds wonderful to use on my iPod Touch. The three main advantages compared to Slater are (1) the much lighter weight and smaller size, (2) the inclusion of song samples, and (3) the ability to filter the search results by region (e.g. Victoria, Southeast, etc)). I found myself generally leaving Slater in my car for reference if I needed it and only taking the e-guide with me into the field. I did not find the iPod Touch screen difficult to read in the field. I jumped right into using the device, and did not read the intro or help sections until later. This worked, but in hindsight I do recommend reading the intro first β€” it took me a while to figure out that rotating the iPod to landscape gave a larger version of the picture, and rotating it back to portrait mode returned to the default view. Also, I did not fully appreciate the compare and smart search functions until towards the end of my trip. I liked the β€œMy List” function that let me track my sightings. The main feature I would like in the next revision is suggestions for similar-looking species. I saw and photographed a juvenile White-throated Gerygone that lacked most of the adults field marks, and I found myself thumbing through 1/2 the Slater Field Guide for an hour before someone else suggested this ID. Overall, I would highly recommend this product for birders going to Oz, and hope the publishers do similar guides for other locations (hint: Costa Rica!).Version: 1.0

βœ“ Crashes since last IOS updateThis app is good but I'd like to see it be able to save the GPS location of sightings and allow lists/sighting data to be exported. I still prefer books and calls but this is a handy and compact tool. My app has started crashing at random times since the last iPhone update..Version: 1.2

βœ“ Very helpful - great to have with you in the fieldI love this app! It is on my iPhone which I carry in my pocket when in the field. I can easily check identification, use the Smart Search to help identify an unknown bird, and having access to the bird calls is fantastic. I agree with others, it would be useful to have the ability to sync between devices, because I keep my life list on my iPad rather than the iPhone. Of course there are errors etc, but I find if you advise the developers, they respond promptly and make a correction in the next update..Version: 1.3

βœ“ Fab Field GuideThis is my all time favourite App. And the most expensive but reference guides usually are. I have used the App in my work-I write heritage walking trails, and in my casual strolls. I have purchased this for a friend and yet another friend requested it for her birthday. The best features are the very clear drawings and the location guides which helps narrow down choices when trying to ID a bird. And the recordings of course although this is little help if you have no idea what the caller looks like. Perhaps update the search engine so that it offers you a list of calls as well as the names of birds?.Version: 1.1.1

βœ“ JargunThis is fabulous..if I were any younger I'd use "awesome". I use it daily as a reference and on every occasion I go photographing birds at various parks and reseves throughout Victoria. The calls are true though lacking the resonance of the calls in the forest, the illustrations are accurate and the whole "app" is simple to navigate for a barely literate "electronic gadgetry" baby boomer. I have it on my iPhone which makes it easy to carry and convenient to access in the field. Thanks Michael and Apple..Version: 1.0

βœ“ App TransferI just got a new phone and was wondering if this app can transfer bird lists between phones..Version: 1.5.2

βœ“ Overall, excellent.I’ve used the app for some years. I’m sure there used to be an option to add more than one β€œMy List”. Today I can’t find any way of doing so. What am I missing?.Version: 1.5.2

βœ“ Recommended without hesitationThe best of the printed field guides to Australian birds has migrated very successfully to the iPhone. The addition of calls is a most useful enhancement. The only thing I am missing is the more complete elaboration of similar species in the text, which is one of the strength's of Morcombe's book. Very useful in the field..Version: 1.0

βœ“ A great way to identify birdsThis is a great app for taking on walks to identify the birds that you see. You don't need to be a bird expert to use it. Just the other day I used it to identify a new parrot at my local park as a Musk Lorikeet, which I had never seen before. I've had the app for a couple of years, and each version makes it better. The latest version has thumbnails and GPS tagging of bird sightings, which is a big improvement. I highly recommend this app..Version: 1.3

βœ“ Oh to be able to download my list!Love this app as it saves having to lug the field guide around *and* it has calls as well. BUT what is the point of creating a list if you can't download it or even just print it off? If you are a birder, get this app, but it needs an update or two to make it perfect..Version: 1.0

βœ“ Worth every centI have the book so it comes as no surprise to find that this app is an outstanding piece of work. Quite simply, the best field guide I've encountered in 45 years of bird watching around the world. It's wonderful to have it on the iPhone because it's always to hand. Having the calls makes it unique..Version: 1.3

βœ“ BrilliantPaid for itself in spades. Personally my only criticism could be that some of the images ( being all hand drawn and not photographs) can sometimes be less 'true to life' and possibly less representative of the species in reality. However the sheer abundance and detail of information on each bird severely makes up for this. Had reservations about spending so much on an App, these quickly disappeared once I began to explore its potential. If you want a comprehensive, versatile and well polished mobile field guide to Australia's Bird life: this is it. Well worth the money..Version: 1.2

βœ“ Worth it just for the bird calls....I only bought this for bird calls and think it is worth the $. However I also agree with other posts that functionality could be improved - especially the lists. A drop down list of places already recorded would be a start. At the moment there is not enough detail to replace a good guide book for pictures and text..Version: 1.2

βœ“ Best app everThis is seriously the best app i own! Any naturalist is mad not to shell out the 30 odd bucks for this, costs less than the book, contains the same info plus you get the calls and it fits snug in your pocket. Please please please develop one for mammals then reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates.Version: 1.2

βœ“ Good where it countsThis app is good for what it delivers - but since it's launch in 2016 there hasn't been an update. There are a few usability issues that could be improved - eg. Showing both birds' names when doing side by side comparison, not displaying the warning box all the time about side by side, not clearing your search text if you then apply a location filter. So usability is niggly but despite this it is very helpful for IDs in the field, which is what really counts. Some would criticise some illustrations as inaccurate, but it's a good starting point and handy in the field..Version: 1.4.4

βœ“ Australian BirdsWhat a great app as live on large wetland and I have the info right on my iPhone. Plus the list is a great idea as I can list the birds I see and add all this information there on the spot. Also a second iphone and iPad, would love to see a option to update list across devices..Version: 1.3

βœ“ I'm really enjoying using this appI've just got into birding, and bought this app instead of a book. I was then given a book as well, which makes it easier to narrow down my search, but the ability to listen to calls while out in the bush makes this app indispensable. If there were a quicker browse function, or if the smart search was a series of simple yes/no type answers with images explaining each characteristic, then it could be even more useful..Version: 1.2

βœ“ A very useful app that is only a step away from being even more usefulWe have just returned from a week of bird watching in the Daintree QLD region continuously using this app to confirm and record sightings. With a few tweeks this app could go from being "very useful" to "can't do without it". Here is our wishlist... 1. Hyperlink between each bird name in "My List" that recalls the the actual record in the database for that bird. 2. The ability to export or email "My List" 3. A GPS/Google maps interface that records sighting location. 4. Extension of "Smart Search" to include bird features such as markings, colour, similar to, etc. Thanks for listening..Version: 1.0

βœ“ Wonderful appI have just bought this app and am loving it so far. It's great to be able to hear the bird calls while having the pics and descriptions right in front of you. Also love the 'compare' birds function. However, it would be great to be able to search by scientific name, rather than common name only. Would also be great to be able to filter smart search results based on more specific habitats e.g. Rainforest..Version: 1.2

βœ“ Please adjust!!!I absolutely love this app! It has everything I need except for a few flaws. There are two very important adjustments that need to be made. I have currently noticed that the vagrant Laughing Gull and the Papuan Frogmouth are missing from the list. It would be awesome if the call of the wandering tattler, chestnut teal, blue-billed duck, freckled duck, white-throated needletail and possibly flock bronze wing, be added. Apart from this I find the app very resourceful and rewarding!!! Definitely worth the money!!!.Version: 1.2

βœ“ Needs index of scientific names! This application is revolutionary and very useful for bird watching and learning about birds for all ages. It deserves much praise for the collection and the accessibility to accurate and comprehensive information it provides. There is a glaring omission preventing it from being useful to all. The lack of a scientific name index and the ability to search by scientific name is a serious limitation for ornithologists. If this can be added in a further update it will service all and become a scientific tool as well as a teaching aid..Version: 1.2

βœ“ Essential for outdoor peopleI work as a hiking guide, and I find this app incredibly useful. It had helped me learn and ID all the central Australian birds that I'm new to. The only improvement would be actual photos as well as the drawings. Sometimes I find it easier using Merlin bird ID app for this reason..Version: 1.5.2
