Morcombe & Stewart Guide for Negative User Reviews

Great but not goodThis application is fantastic. It has all the birds that i want and more. But the program itself is woeful. It has smart search is simply horrible, what happens if I tick Exclude Passerines and Include Only Passerines. Some complex screen that I think is trying to tell me I have no results. There are other choices that let me choose both A and not A by checking boxes. Its a poor UI with check boxes and scroll wheels that really makes no logical sense. Paper field guides did this kind of thing a long time ago, why not emulate them? The screen when held vertically has a top half that shows a picture and a bottom half that shows text. The pictures are not pinchable for zoom, though if you rotate the phone the picture comes to a full screen size, but the text is now gone and the only way to get it back is to hold the phone vertically. Its sad because the pictures are one of the best aspects of the book. The fidelity though is amazing, pictures in the book and on the iPhone are identical in size, but I wonder do they have to be. The phone is a virtual environment and the pictures could be as big as needed, whereas in the book the author is constrained by form factor and available paper. Don't get me wrong I love this app, but it could have been so much better. At the moment it is just a book in iPhone form, and clearly it could be really great. The app is iPhone only. On an iPad it has to be scaled to twice its size..Version: 1.0

Bug?App has recently stopped working after selecting for region. Can’t get out of region page..Version: 1.5.2

Problem with purchasing both Lite and Reference VersionsIf you download the Lite version then buy the full version, the full version doesn’t show up in purchased apps and attempts to share the full version results in only the Lite version being shared. There are numerous issues in addition requiring an update but 2 years on, there have been no revisions (see comments on the Lite version)..Version: 1.4.4

Better off buying the bookI thoroughly enjoyed the book so was optimistic about downloading the app. The app has some fantastic features, namely, the recorded bird calls. However overall I was disappointed by the lack of bird species as compared to the book. I acknowledge that the app is cheaper compared to the book, and as such is not as impressive. Yet for $30, I would have to say that this app is not worth that amount of money due to lack of bird species. I live just north of Brisbane in open forest and very often cannot find common bird species when bird watching..Version: 1.4.4

Passably goodI love the app and it’s features generally, but there are simply gaps in the database, birds in the various books that I refer to that are not on the app. This is frustrating when I want to record a sighting and the bird doesn’t exist according from the app..Version: 1.5.2

Can’t get the list to work.I’m on an iPhone 14, and the feature to check box birds you’ve seen doesn’t work. Nothing is saved..Version: 1.5.2

Frequent crashes & freezingI've learnt to export 'my list' often, because the app crashes frequently & the only option is to delete & reinstall app. The first time this happened I had 78 birds in my list. Had to start from scratch. Often the alphabetic & taxonomic lists fail to open - sending me to my list repeatedly. Turning the phone off & on seems to fix this. It's a great concept & both the bird descriptions & calls are a good resource, but the app is full of bugs. Considering the high price (most expensive app I've purchased), it's overall very disappointing..Version: 1.4.2

Needs a lot more work but still a decent app* I changed operating systems and can’t import the list I exported from my old phone - they said it was coming but that was a year ago * The ‘my list’ logs are poorly laid out - they’re all on one long page and difficult to follow * It seems I can’t delete one log without deleting all logs for that bird * Needs a lot more work for 5 stars, especially given the price.Version: 1.5.2

Where’s the Gang-Gang?Great app! I’m enjoying adding to my bird list! However, it seems that this same app from the Australian App Store has more birds in it. My stepfather and I have compared notes and there are many missing in my app that he has in his app. Can you please update? I’d like to add my Gang-Gang sighting!.Version: 1.4.4

Unsupported and full of bugsIt’s full of bugs and not worth the money.Version: 1.5.2

My List could be betterOne the features of this wonderful package I use the most is My List. It is hamstrung though by the inability to edit my list in this latest version apart from deleting the entire list! If you want to build up a bird list over years, edit that list when identifications in the past were incorrect or you have duplicated some recordings, in this version you can't do anything about unless you start again. Surely there could be better edit functions in the next version..Version: 1.2

Not as good as it should be!A useful guide but not a brilliant one. It has a number of short comings. The illustrations are not of a high quality, and in some cases are poor. The coloration of many birds is not always indicative of the true colours. The search function is linked with the area of the country where you are observing but the data entered into this function have not been checked for accuracy. There are several birds that the provided maps show as occurring in Tasmania but the search function does not list them as being in the state. I have also found other species that are common. in Tasmania but the guide claims they do not occur in the state. Finally, the guide does not always clearly highlight the differences between closely similar species. It is possible to display two species alongside each other but you often have to search for the differences - it would much more useful to have these highlighted..Version: 1.3

Latest update missing osprey! No osprey in IOC update!.Version: 1.5

Missing many speciesI like the ease and layout of the app. It’s huge shortcoming is the lack of content. Really, only 23 of 58 honeyeaters? No cassowary? 4 of 13 monarchs? 2 of 11 thornbills? The list goes on and on. Too bad. Now I have to carry my Pizzey and Knight with me..Version: 1.4.4
