Talking Thai <> English Dictionary+Phrasebook for Positive User Reviews

Best Dictionary I’ve Ever SeenI’m upset I didn’t discover this app 2 years ago when I started learning Thai. I was fine paying the price just for a simple good dictionary with the Paiboon phonetic system but this app is way more than a dictionary. It has absolutely everything you need to study Thai from common usage to grammar, to classifiers. This is great work by the developers..Version: 2.3

Even more amazingThis app just keeps getting better. I first got it over 10 years ago; I recently moved to Thailand and this app has made my life so much easier. Well worth the price..Version: 2.3

Unbelievably comprehensiveThis is the best language app for Thai I've found. And I've tried them all! Not a pretty interface but all is forgiven as it's just so very, very useful for beginner or advanced Thai speaker. And equally good for going from Thai to English as vice versa. Keep on improving please developers..Version: 2.0

Great program easy to useขอบคุณมากๆ.Version: 2.0

The best Thai appThis really is excellent so much information and really easy to use would highly recommend anyone wanting to learn Thai . don’t go past get this app you won’t regret it.Version: 2.3

Excellent!I love this app. Even after learning Thai for many years this is the dictionary that I always reach for first. Find a word from any aspect; Transliteration, Thai or English and the meanings are more accurate than most. Also love the way you can find out about how the words are made up. Brilliant. The only reason I gave it 4 stats instead of 5 is the lack of updates. I have discovered many words that are missing and have put them forward for adding in at update time but no update since 2012 is just a bit lazy. If you're learning Thai this is an app to invest in..Version: 1.6

Really greatI have lived in Thailand and found this app invaluable..Version: 2.3

Covid-19 vocabulary update pleaseI love this app but would like to see some updates on more modern slang and with the Covid-19 crisis, some new additions to the word bank. Also a dark mode would be an awesome feature..Version: 2.3

Absolutely stunningLike the last reviewer, I don't normally write reviews for apps. Given how brilliant this is, the effort had to be made. I can honestly say that it is the best app for any purpose I have bought: it does exactly what it says in the description and more. for example, it doesn't state that there is no need to search for a word when in fact you just start typing and the word is found. It even has three (or perhaps more) 'anglicised' systems of the Thai scrip to choose from - including the one that I am using on my course which is great. The breadth of options for each word is also superb - I used to edit dictionaries (of the 'old' style pre app era) and it is just so good at telling you what's formal, what's normal use etc. I truly cannot rate this app highly enough as a beginner in learning the Thai language - the sounds are 'real people', it is lightening fast, and I have learned so much with it already. I have a number of other thai dictionaries on my iphone/ipad but none are as good as this. Yes, it is the most expensive, but worth every single penny (or baht) and sets the standard for how apps should be (I think we have all got used to apps being inferior to pc software products - this is far superior) Great stuff to whoever developed it - and thank you.Version: 1.6

The best! Really and truly. If you don't know a single word of Thai this app will get you through just about anything. The phrases that were added in the last update are invaluable. I can only imagine how useful this would be for a tourist. It's like having a translator with you. You can look things up and then let your phone speak Thai. You can have Thais speak to your phone and then read it in English. This is another invaluable tool because Thai is tonal and has many new sounds for English speakers that must be learned. I have lived in Thailand for 20 years and I am told that I speak very well but I will never reach 100%. Thai and English are too radically different, at least for me. Thai people tell me I am fluent but I use this app almost every month. Just browsing through it I learn new words and new ways to express ideas. Only issue I have is that it does not have all the vocabulary that I need. But I do not come across this issue too often. Also the app lets you suggest any words that it does not have. Hopefully my suggestions will be included in the next update. The vocabulary that is lacking is almost always high level language that I need for discussing things with doctors, lawyers, having philosophical or religious discussions and things like that which a tourist or newcomer to the language would not need. It is worth so much more than the price that they charge. You will not be disappointed!.Version: 2.3

AmazedThanks for the hard work. This app is not only extremely useful, it’s easy to use and in every detail practical, yet above and beyond in the work put in to create an app that’s so much more than just another dictionary. Next to a classroom or personal tutor this app is most useful. Also so useful in the classroom or on the streets of Thailand. Thanks!.Version: 2.3

ThaiverymuchThis App is indispensable for learning and understanding Thai. Yes it is expensive, but well worth the investment A*****.Version: 2.3

Now the X. Last IPhone I bought was I5 in Udon ThaniJust bought the IPhone X. First 15 min on the App Store Good to be back. Going through my list and remember happily payment paying for this 5 years ago. Awesome updates and awesome to see y’all are keeping the Thai language accessible. Next I need to load the Thai keyboard for some practice. Great to see the fresh updates! I had the hard copy of this book too. Khrap!.Version: 2.3

Worth it.This is a very expensive app by Ipod/Iphone standards, but it is worth every penny if you spend more than a few days in Thailand, or if you work with Thais in your own country. It takes a little time to get use to the interface and how searches are done, but it is definitive in its various uses of words, both Thai and English. I used it nearly every day and stopped carrying my Thai dictionary. It does not have basic phrases, but the Amazing Thailand App, which is available for free, covers things like that, and the two apps together make an unbeatable combination. One wish would be for a favorites button or tool since it can take a bit of searching sometime to find the exact word you are looking for, being able to tag that as a favorite would make this great app even better. The history is one way to do that, but the history was not consistent enough to be able to use it to quickly find favorite words. It is good with a number of technical terms and with the Thai keyboard, I could hand it to my collegues in Thailand so they could type in a Thai word on the few times when they did not know the English translation. This was particularly handy when trying to identify plants in the field, including herbs. Again, the ability to save favorites is the only thing that is lacking from my view..Version: 1.6

Fantastic app for meThis has been a really great asset and saved us often and helped us more often than I can say. I'm also still getting used to the new version, but it's comprehensive and just so good for so many aspects of the language. I still come across words occasionally that I can't easily seem to get anywhere, really specifically related or technical ones not used often. But it's not something that is a real issue and I think it just fantastic. I don't bother to write reviews usually but I wanted to for this one because it's how it is and deserves a good wrap. IMO.Version: 2.0

AmazingNot realy one fro going in deep with reveiws. This software is amazing, each word is spoken aloud to you by a thai speaker. One thing i would like to request is that verb conjugations be included for I, You, We... -ing, -ed... and so on. Overall though it is worth the money, but please please please update with conjugations i could learn so muvh more with them. Thank you very much for the hard work you have put into this App. Mike... "After reading help section of the dictionary i now realise thai has no verb conjugations in the way english does. My appologise for asking you to add them".Version: 1.3

Outstanding!Best money I have ever spent on Thai language learning materials..Version: 2.3

The best hands downEasily the best Thai dictionary . It's fast has both directions and gives better results then online translators like googles.Version: 2.3

Absolutely the best!Thai to English or English to Thai, this is the most comprehensive and easy to use, for beginners or advanced speakers. Many useful features as well..Version: 2.3

Works both waysAre use this app to teach English to Thai people and for myself to learn Thai. A very excellent and powerful application highly recommended..Version: 2.3

Impossible not to 5*I've been living in Thailand about 8 months and learning Thai for 6. I'm certainly on the "mid beginner" scale - reading Thai slowly and speaking/understanding basically. That said, this app has been invaluable. The translations are accurate, and additional English gloss is always given (so you know which translation of "hot" is spicy/warm). The excellent explain spelling and spoken versions of words really help when you're learning the nuances of Thai reading/pronounciation. I'd ask for faster dict lookups though, it does lag when searching even on an IP4. ขอบคุณมากๆๆ.Version: 1.3

Best Thai Dictionary, with some room for improvementThis is the best and by far the most extensive Thai dictionary I have found online, and the developer is responsive and communicative. Excellent! In honesty, I would say that the app is not yet 100% user-unfriendly. Switching between Eng and Thai is kinda funky, and there have been problems with the paste text into search box function. But the developer assures me they’re working on it and continuing to support the app. This is an amazing dictionary for one of the most difficult languages in the world. Excellent app, highly recommended.

Perfect for learning ThaiGreat app..Version: 1.6

Best Thai Dictionary I've FoundI've been using this for several years now. My wife is Thai and this has been a great help in talking with my in-laws. It's not only a dictionary but also has classfiers for all the nouns, can function as a phrasebook, and you can tap on the little speaker icon to hear the word pronounced by a native Thai speaker with the correct tonation. Is it a little pricey as apps go? Maybe a little but this app is well worth it..Version: 2.3

Still awesomeThe best Thai-English dictionary out there. Used every day for 7 years..Version: 2.3

Great apps, I've used others but this is the best, dii tii sutThis compliments the Thai For Beginners Book too. It is the best dictionary I've used. Used to carry the book around but this is very convenient. Thanks guys..Version: 1.3

UpgradeAwesome upgrade. ขอบคุณมากๆ :-).Version: 2.0

My favourite dictionaryI use this all the time in Thailand as the pronunciation is the main communication tool and this does it really well..Version: 2.0

Amazing toolAn amazing app, I use it everyday, very broad dictionary and excellent. Recommend to anybody who wants the best translator out there.Version: 2.3

Great app!Really does what it says. Full of many many words and provides both romanised and thai characters together with audio output. Very very helpful in learning this complex language. Anyone know of an equivalent for Chinese? - looking but cannot find one!.Version: 1.6

Terrific dictionaryBest dictionary I have ever used. Can search words in English, Thai script, and transliteration. Highly recommended..Version: 2.3

Wonderful App with one small bugEvery good thing all the other reviewers have said about this app is true. I use it daily. One small bug on my iPad Pro, iOS 16.3.1. The lower rows of both the phonetic and Thai keyboards go off the bottom of the screen. I suspect thus happened with the latest iOS release, not long ago.Version: 2.3

Absolutely superbWe have a Thai daughter in law. This app makes such a difference that I bought my wife an iPod touch so she could have the dictionary. Everything works. The fact that it says the Thai words to you so clearly is invaluable for this tonal language. The range of words is excellent (always want more though). The disambiguation is clear e.g. Which sense of the word 'wear'. If I could dial a development it would be the inclusion of a guide to grammar with some examples.Version: 1.3

ComprehensiveEven Thai speakers are impressed with how this app works, which is a good sign that it is doing the right thing. Dictionary helps so much — it contains words and combinations of those words in English that really aid conversations. The speech tutoring is second to none (but beware: you need to understand how English really works, first!) Only gripe is that this app has now not been updated for two years. It doesn’t fit on newer iPhone screens. Quick update to solve that would be favourable!.Version: 2.3

MarkA must have app for anyone wanting to learn thai the app was great when it was just a dictionary, but know with the phrase book and new features it's Fantastic....Version: 2.0

Wonderful appI have used a number of Thai-English-Thai dictionaries over the years along with dedicated talking dictionaries and this product leaves them all for dead. It has a customisable, well thought out, intuitive interface, an extensive vocabulary and many features (such as listing the associated classifiers with a word) that have helped improve my knowledge and language skills. I love the ability to be able to choose the system for representing the pronunciation of Thai words, to use two-finger gestures to scale the font, to readily copy words for cut-and-past into other apps (such as SMS) and many other features. My only complaints are minor. I'd like to see more words related to building and tools. I would like to be able to set different systems for use with showing the pronunciation of Thai words and doing phonetic searches. And, I would l really like to see more on tones, specifically learning exercises. That said, in fairness to the authors this is a dictionary and not a language teaching tool. A great product and well worth the money..Version: 1.6

Best Thai appThis is by far the best Thai language app that I’ve found…comprehensive and in depth, but at the same time easy to use and intuitive. It makes learning the alphabet surprisingly easy,if you’re thinking of visiting or living in Thailand this is an essential.Don’t be put off by the price,it delivers so much bang for your buck you definitely won’t be disappointed….worth every penny..Version: 2.3

Very ImpressiveI am a พระฝรั่ง who has been living in Thailand for almost a year and I find this dictionary indispensable. I would actually give this app 4 1/2 stars if possible, simply for the fact that there is no male voice option available... Yet. There is so much to this app. Not only do you have the comprehensive Thai-English and vice-versa dictionaries, and the 'Thai Sound' function (where you enter a Thai word in English transliteration), but it also a veritable treasure trove of information on speaking, listening, reading and writing. It is clear a lot of time and effort has gone into making this quality app. I applaud Paiboon Publishers and the developers for a job very well done. I have the Thai for Beginners app too, and although the interface is not quite as polished as this one's, it it also very comprehensive and useful and I highly recommend it. I use both regularly..Version: 1.6

FantasticThis is the fourth Thai dictionary I've bought in the last 5 years (sometimes on PC and sometimes on Mac). Was wondering when I clicked 'buy' if it was going to be worth the money - but it's the best dictionary I've ever purchased. The recorded pronunciation is amazing. Well worth every cent.Version: 1.6

The best Thai dictionary for your phoneVery good app. Worth the money. Thank you for updating screen size for iPhone 5/5s. I'm excited to hear about version 2.0 with bookmark functionality. Keep up the great work..Version: 1.8

Very useful app!So far I'm finding this app very useful. My only minor gripe is that it is a bit slow to respond when you are typing words. Other than that it is pretty much perfect. Seemed expensive but it is a very good tool while I learn Thai..Version: 1.3

Love this AppI have always been a fan of this app from its very first version, but this latest version, version 2, has taken the sophistication of the app to a level beyond all expectation. Brilliant effort by the designers to deliver a brilliant app. Worth every cent, worth every สตางค์..Version: 2.0

GreatThe best great program good people.Version: 2.3

PowerfulGreat tool for everyday’s learning help. Many search options for multiple pronunciations. Partially customisable, so you can choose only the words/phrases relevant to you. It is by far the best structured online dictionary..Version: 2.3

Superb app for learning ThaiWithout doubt one of the best purchases I have made for learning to speak, read and write Thai and probably one of the best (and most expensive) app purchases I have ever made. The app already has a massive dictionary and I don’t think I’ve come across a word that it didn’t have, even down to town names! The ability to search in English, Thai script and even Thai sound (the search by Thai sound can be a bit tricky depending on which Pronunciation Guide system you have selected - better to learn to read / write so you can ditch the karaoke writing altogether) is superb and there is a audio playback for every word in Thai, brilliant if you’re not yet sure of the tone(s) used. Outstanding app and superb value for money. Really looking forward to the 2016 v2 release which, as it will include all the features of their excellent Thai Phrasebook app, and a much expanded vocabulary, will really take the app to the next level..Version: 1.8

FabulousSo helpful and fun to use with all thai people. Best app ever I use 20times a day. Hard to work out how to change keyboards but benefits still worth it . Learn thai and enjoy sharing your phone with Thais . They enjoy it too. Sometimes so fun we laugh till we cry and Thais remember so don't think you can use English next time you meet..Version: 1.3

Listen to the other reviewersIt is absolutely the best out there. I’ve tried them all and this one is perfect. It should be at the top of the list but has not yet been truly discovered. The price is totally worth it. Just get it if you’re serious about learning Thai..Version: 2.3

Still adjusting to new version and has some bugsThere was a big learning curve in getting to know version 2.0. Most of my concerns have been quickly fixed and now I greatly appreciate the app that has gone from just being a great dictionary to become a very effective language learning tool. Great!.Version: 2.3

Oh dear Websters American English DictionaryBefore reviewing this product I was using "The Thai Translator" V1.3 a paid for app by Ncephalon Corp Ltd. My review on this product is posted on iTunes. A better product which I have just evaluated and am now using is the Paiboon Talking Thai which fixes most of the problems I have encountered. As a dictionary it is very good both the English to Thai part and Thai to English of the product. I have hardly used the phonetic one as this in itself is like learning another script language. Disappointingly it uses Webster American English dictionary rather than Oxford English dictionary and true British English. Using it with Thai people I find that the translations are very good and accurate. Moreover, there are several things that I find far better than previous products I have used before that allow me to rate Talking Thai higher. The key is text size. Thai language script is very small and you cannot see the tone marks clearly so as a Thai to English translator, to quote my optician you could easily mix up translations as the text is so small it is beyond 2020 vision. Talking Thai gives you the ability to resize the text which to me on top of being a good dictionary with good sound clear sound on each translation is key. It also gives you the choice of a different keyboard. It does not rely on the poor inherent keyboard of the iPhone which is quite difficult to use for Thai, as you have to slide your fingers using both hands for tone and vowel marks. The help files are extensive and give you very good support in the Thai language or where you might need some clarification. I am yet to find another product with such extensive help files. Ok, so what would I improve after using this one. Well, there are some words missing in the dictionary and I would like an Oxford English dictionary rather than the Webster American one this provides. Indeed it would be good to set to British English or American English in the translation. One word that does not exist as an example is "labour" instead you get "labor". If you don't understand American English and need British English you will find this product a little off putting. I would like to have a male voice as well as a female voice as I am male and pronunciation is slightly different from males. Some words are missing in proper definition such as manufacturing, niche(in business), not very for not really, few common phrases and some business English terminology. This is a weakness in the Webster American English Dictionary rather than the Thai side of the product. Overall its a product that if the English side was improved has good functions and extensive help..Version: 1.6

Exceptionally good but still has some bugsExceptionally good app but still has some bugs, I find on my iPhone when I try to get it speak the Thai word it does for the first three times then becomes unresponsive and hangs. Please fix this as the app is the best of its kind in my opinion and at $26.00 dollars I think I paid for it I expect it to work flawlessly all the time. I also agree that there should be an option to screen out place/location names, otherwise a fantastic tool when in Thailand..Version: 1.6

MikeRitzaExcellent app and highly recommended. Small error in the break down of the syllables (only gives the whole phrase and not the individual syllables as indicated)but I am sure this will be rectified in due course..Version: 2.0

Superb update!!The most extensive, comprehensive update I have ever had on an app. This app has changed from a dictionary to a dictionary/phrase-book/language learning app. I've just sat for a few hours going through it & it's so much better than before ... but, it really should be for the price!! Small gripe : the male setting still has the same female voice (although she says "krap/kap" it still doesn't sound right), change that & you'd get 5 Stars app makers!.Version: 2.0

FabulousI at first thought too different but now find it just amazing. It is a steep learning curve to get started but really worth it. Keep up your amazing work..Version: 2.0

Best App!!Seriously the best app and worth the money. Every bit worth the money. One thing... the Haas keyboard needs the glottal stop option for beginning of words. There are many words that can’t be searched for because this option isn’t there. At least I can’t find it. Thanks..Version: 2.3

ExcellentI have had this app as a companion to help me translate to communicate between my wife and myself. I am using it more and more as I am now actively learning the Thai language. There are some really good grammar explanations an I find it really helpful to assist my online and YouTube learning. Really good app. I would be lost without it. Ed.Version: 2.3

Best translator I've ever usedI've had this over four years now. I would not trade it for any other English-Thai app. I've challenged this dictionary/translator many times and it has come shining through. There are words I never thought it would have but Talking Thai had an answer 99% of the time, even when I threw phrases at it. Worth every satang..Version: 1.8

SuperbThis app is fantastic and worth every penny. The amount of information it contains is incredibly impressive and it is very easy to use..Version: 1.8

IncredibleHow did I get around before buying this app I’ll never know..Version: 2.3

Absolutely Worth ItAs someone who lives in Thailand as is currently trying to learn the language, I would be absolutely lost without this app. It has everything you need to learn the basic rules of grammar, reading, writing and has an explanation for why everything is the way it is. Plus a limitless dictionary that has just about every word you could imagine. The most comprehensive app I could ask for to the fundamentals of Thai. I was hesitant to spend $25 dollars on an app at first but it is absolutely, without a doubt worth it, if you're interested in learning Thai, it is a must buy..Version: 2.3

Amazing Thai<->English dictionaryAfter comparing several, this is the best Thai dictionary money can buy! It features native speaker audio for all the words and phrases. It has incredible search features that allow you to search based on thai script or phonetic notation (several supported including IPA)..Version: 2.3

Great... and constantly improvingAt first I was thrown by the new layout. It took a while to get familiar with my way around again. This app is money well spent and it gets better with every update..Version: 2.0

SuperbI’ve started learning Thai and this dictionary is ideal for learners. Each word and sentence has audio. And the “words inside” feature helps users understand compound words. There are also a large number of model sentences that are perfect for learning conversational Thai..Version: 2.3

Never leave home without this app.Even better than I imagined it would be. Congrats..Version: 1.3

For anyone learning ThaiThe depth of this app is amazing. In all honesty, from the get go it is a bit tricky to use. I have had it for probably over a year and I didn’t really appreciate it that much. My advice: dig around inside and fiddle around with things. There is so much functionality in here and the ability to break down ties script into each individual sounds is amazingly useful..Version: 2.3

BrilliantThis is the one app I use again and again everyday, the ability to look up in English, Thai and Thai sound is invaluable. I thoroughly recommend for anyone serious about learning Thai. One thing that would be helpful would be to pull up a list of the common colloquial words, these are highlighted but cannot call up as a separate list..Version: 1.4

Excellent productUse it every day. Perfect for the ones who either do not know Thai or need a brush up!.Version: 1.6

Far superior to any language app in any languageI have used many apps for several languages, from translators to language courses to dictionaries. While this is called a dictionary (and is terrific at that function), it is much more than that as it also allows very hands-on language learning by the user through several functionalities (that work as they are supposed to). The Categories system is very well designed - both for finding words and phrases and for creating one’s own category tree of important words and phrases. And - not to forget — this is not just a text dictionary but a verbal one. The listening-to-pronunciation function works perfectly so far, with a very clear speaker. This app deserves to be well known and widely used..Version: 2.3

Something to lean onI now have time to dedicate to my learning Thai and have greater understanding and involvement in conversation with my wife and family - this is just one of the tools I am using but find it very helpful not just for me to speak Thai but also when Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) in written form so that I can refer to English and Thai at the same time which will enhance any student/teacher clarification. HOWEVER I am only just starting my Thai language journey - but like the way that this allows me to formulate and alter specific sentences. I like it.Version: 2.3

Main reason why my Thai is goodThis is the best Thai-English dictionary—bar none. It is made by a Thai native who has decades of experience with learning languages and as a translator, so the material is trustworthy (highly important for me). Every single word also has audio (native speaker), so your pronunciation can be spot on (also important for me). You can also compile vocabulary with the Favourites feature, and even organize everything into folders. And finally, for Anki users like myself, with the new v2 version, you can copy entries from your favourites, save the copied text as a TXT file, and import it directly into Anki! This dictionary app is a crucial part of my learning of Thai. I love it!.Version: 2.3

The best Thai language learning tool ever!I don’t leave reviews very often, but this one deserves my attention and my heartfelt praises. I have basically been using this app every day for the last 10 years. It was good to start with, and it keeps getting better. Thank you for thank you for this. I also recommend a series of books published by published by Paiboon: Thai for beginners, Thai for intermediate learners and Thai for advanced Readers..Version: 2.3

Excellent AppThis is one of the best Thai dictionaries available. The phonetic Thai guide is easy to understand and the spoken Thai is very clear. The price is a little high, but worth it if you want an excellent dictionary..Version: 1.3

Best Thai Leaning App for Those with Some Thai Language SkillsI’ve been using this app off and on for years. Lately (2024) I’ve notice that the input onscreen keyboard isn’t formatted to fit the screen on my iPad any longer. The lower portion is cut off. I check the last update version and this app hasn’t been updated for the past 6 years. I still find it useful though. I always liked the Thai phonetic sound test input feature. The app only works with the on-screen keyboard provided in the app… Cannot use the iPad onscreen keyboard or and external keyboard. The publisher of this app, Paiboon Publishing, has been producing Thai dictionaries, phrase books, tapes, and learning materials since the early 1970’s and probably well before that. All there materials are very helpful in learning and improving your Thai language skills. I’m sorry they stopped updating this app. Since the basic Thai language doesn’t change much except for more recent technical terms this app is still useful..Version: 2.3

Expensive but amazing......as everyone else has already said. Well worth the money and vastly superior to all other Thai dictionary apps..Version: 1.3

Great AppThis completely blows away all other Thai-English dictionaries on the App Store. To have high quality, native Thai pronunciation of every word is just great! Font sizes are easily adjustable, a real benefit, as in many Thai dictionaries fonts are simply too small to be easily read. The capacity to break any word down into its component words instantly is a huge benefit too. This really helps in understanding how Thai words are put together and saves heaps of time. Paiboon Publishing has scored an ace with this one. It is worth every cent as it is considerably more powerful and useful than Paiboon's similar paperback dictionary at around the same price. Six stars! My only quibble would be that I would make the History file a bit longer..Version: 1.3

Just about perfect; a delight to useThis is the friendliest, most thoughtfully designed language dictionary app I’ve used. It is packed with features to help with learning Thai, as well as features that make communication while learning much easier and less intimidating. The search by sound and explain spelling features are especially excellent. Extensive help pages explain every aspect of the app, speaking and reading Thai, and loads more. Totally worth the price. If you have any doubts, the app’s website is detailed and should leave you feeling confident. Highly recommended!.Version: 2.3

The is the one everyone has been waiting for.I don't normally write reviews on iPhone apps but i think this one really deserves it because of the hard work they have put into making it. If you want to learn the thai language then i think this is the best app around for doing this. Before this was released i had the programme for my PC which was very good so soon as i found out this was released then i purchased it straight away. I've removed all my other Thai language apps because you only need this one. Its worth the price and is very easy to use and comes with clear instructions on how to use the applications functions..Version: 1.6

Worth every pennyI am attending a thai class and this app is a life saver. It is very well designed and customizable. No other app comes even close to this. If you just need a dictionary there some other free dictionary apps. But if you are learning thai get this one.Version: 2.3

Really worth the InvestmentI’ve lived in Thailand for 7 years and I still refer to this on a weekly (and sometimes daily) basis. I was an early adopter of this App when it first came out in 2011 and the development that has gone into the app over the intervening years has been really great. If you are planning on spending any time in Thailand and Thai is not your heart language the just consider this app as part of the cost of being there. You won’t regret it..Version: 2.3

Needs IOS 8 updateBrilliant app, but keyboard doesn't work anymore for Thai since iOS update and needs to be fixed for Ipad users, probably iPhone too I'd guess..Version: 1.6

Excellent dictionary, v user friendlyHiya, have to write a review as I think this is an excellent app. The phonetic Thai generally works well, and it'sgreat to have a dictionary format where you can hear each word read aloud! The "see it in thai in different fonts" option is also really handy for helping me read Thai on shop signs etc. I'm still just a beginner when it comes to reading Thai, but this is already helping me improve. Khop kun maak kaa!.Version: 1.3

Great applicationOne of the better ones.Version: 2.3

Number 1 with a bulletThis is the gold standard of Thai -English - Thai Phonetic dictionaries and allows you to look up Thai words by English translation, Thai language script, and the sound of the word in Thai. As well, you can hear a real person pronounce every word in the dictionary and particularly helpful is the word inside feature as much of the Thai language is composed of compound words. You can also look up English translations of Thai words. I've used the pocket sized printed dictionary for years and this iteration is even better. I live in Thailand and use this app every day. It does everything it promises and does it well. Buy it now. This is a must have for everyone who even thinks they may need it and the price is small compared to it's usefulness..Version: 1.3

Good but needs updatingIts a great app when it works, but recent iOS changes mean its difficult to use. The navigation bar which appears at the bottom runs off screen, so you can only see the top 20% of it.Version: 2.3

Best app around!Very good app!.Version: 2.3

Outstanding ‼️👍🏼I have tried numerous other programs. This is by far the best one available !!!.Version: 2.3

Acuurate and FastThis app interface is like no other. There has been a mountain of development to make this app extensive and its powered to work quickly. It’s more of a dictionary than a learning tool however I can rely on it to provide very accurate translations. I would give it 5 stars if it was arranged in a way that I could configure the database to work more effectively with my personal learning preferences. But maybe this is a option I haven’t found yet?.Version: 2.3

Most comprehensiveThis app is the most comprehensive listing of Thai/English translations I have found. I have been using it for 6 years now, and I am always pleased with it search tool. Highly recommend the investment if you need to use Thai and English language translations on a regular basis..Version: 2.3

QualityYou basically pay for what you get here and it's worth it. There are cheap alternatives, meanwhile this is THE real deal. A great resource. 5 stars well earned..Version: 1.3

PaiboonPretty good. Easy to use except that the keyboard does not switch to the language corresponding to entry mode. Would like an option for screening out place names but. I am sure that will be useful when travelling. I miss the. Sentences and similar words from Thai2English. Still finding lots of good things..Version: 1.6

Due an updateThis app is good but it needs an update now. For £25, this app should get frequent updates. There are other free apps which are nearly as good as this one. To learn a new language you need many different apps to help so I’m happy that I purchased this app and recommend it to potential purchasers but it really needs an update to modernise it..Version: 2.3

Fantastic! Great Study Aid and User FriendlyI've been living in Thailand and taking basic Thai classes for a couple of months now. The classes are focused on spoken Thai, and I've been frustrated by a lot of the e-dictionaries and other apps that require Thai words to be entered in Thai script, which I can't read yet. The Talking Thai app allows me to search for words or phrases in three different ways - using the English word, the Thai word using a romanized script, or the Thai word using Thai script. It also allows me to create folders where I can store favorite words or phrases for later study. I have now done this with the vocabulary words from the first 15 chapters of my textbooks, so I can carry them with me and study at any time. The best part is that for each word (or short phrase), I can click an icon and hear the word spoken by a real Thai speaker. The tones are hard to get right if your mother tongue is not a tonal language, and getting the tones right can be critical to making yourself understood. The spoken Thai in this app is much better than Google translate, which I tried to use before for this purpose. I've found about 98% of the vocabulary from my textbook in this app. The ones that are missing are mostly multi-word expressions. Usually the dictionary has the individual component words, but may not have them placed together, usually because they have an alternate expression for the same thing, often one that is more commonly used. There are also lots of example phrases using basic grammatical forms. More than just a dictionary, I am finding Talking Thai to be a great study aid. I also stumble across a lot of new and useful words as I look up others. The other thing I like about this app is how user-friendly the interface is. When I look up a word, the search engine will give me all examples where that word appears in the entire app. In the English searches, it also shows words with similar spellings. So when I looked up "happy" in English, I found several Thai words for the adjective happy in the first entry, presented with both Thai script and romanized script. Placed next to each word is a little button I can push to have each word pronounced for me, and another button I can push if I want to save the word to one of my folders in Favorites. Below that, is another word for happy in Thai (referring more to being content) and then some words with similar spellings, such as happen, happily, happiness, etc. If I search the other way, using romanized Thai, I get the word for happy showing several synonyms in English to indicate its meaning, as well as the word used in phrases and sentences in various ways. Also, many of the example phrases come from folders dealing with specific subjects, such as Time, or Religion, or How We Feel. If you want to see what else is in that folder, you can just click on the tab immediately below the phrase, and the app will take you to that folder to see what else might be there. This is very helpful for studying the months or days of the week, for example. A feature I really like is the ability to grab just one word or a string of words from a sentence and search for it alone in the dictionary. They make this really easy. You tap the sentence, the app opens a new window where you can limit the words to just the one (or a few) you are interested in, then you can hit search and find the dictionary meaning for just that word or short phrase, or you can hit the "find words inside" command and it will break up the phrase into its constituent pieces and tell you the possibilities for what each individual word might mean. One really nice design feature is that when you hit the back button to return to the original phrase, you find yourself right where you left off within the list, rather than back at the top, having to scroll back down to where you left off. One more really nice feature of the app is the ability to resize the script on any page just by placing two fingers on the screen and moving them apart. Particularly helpful to those who have reached middle age. Whoever designed this app was really thinking about the user when they did so. A final feature I like are a set of symbols to tell the user whether a particular word is formal, primarily spoken only, or literary. This is nice when you look up an English word you want to use, because it immediately tells you which of several choices might, or might not, be appropriate in a particular situation. The symbols are only used for words that are primarily formal, or primarily spoken only, etc. I can't say enough about how useful this app is. The price is very reasonable considering the content. This app has been invaluable as a supplement to my Thai class. Knowing what I know now, I would have gladly paid more for this app. If the designers would like to make improvements, or perhaps create a Pro-version, they might consider adding a flashcard function whereby the words stored in a folder or group of folders could be randomized for study purposes. Also, there is a Thai-Japanese dictionary app where the Thai word can be typed in even if you don't know the exact "spelling" in roman script, and the app will present all possibilities. So if the word I hear sounds like "Kwaam-Suk" but I don't know if it is actually "Kwam-Suk" or "Gwam-Suk" or "Kwam-Suuk", the app will present all of these possibilities. If this app had a "Guess" mode, where it tried to find a word that sounded close to what the user types in, it would make the app even more valuable. Might be trickier to program with English but a feature like that would make this app even more valuable..Version: 2.3

The best Thai dictionaryThis is my first ever rating and review of an App. I'm not going to write about its features, their commitment to updates, stability, or anything because they are all excellent. I'm just going to say This is the best Thai dictionary I've ever used - well worth the price..Version: 2.3

A must have for learning Thai or if you're just on holidayMy most used app,use it for homework and helping me dat to day..Version: 1.8

Worth the money!Brilliant app...I'm currently studying thai via an online class with native thai speakers...BUT there have been some things that my teachers have failed to teach me about the language, certain things I was unsure about. This app has helped fill in these gaps!...apart from storing so many words, it also teaches everything from the alphabet, tones, and pronunciation. You can hear every word spoken by a native thai speaker and everything is explained so simply. Each word can be broken up to explain the spelling.Well worth the money if you're serious about learning thai! I recommend it..Version: 1.6

Just amazing !!!!! 6 Stars!I cannot speak too highly of this app. It's got everything and it works extremely well. I've been using this app for over 5 years now and it just keeps getting better!.Version: 2.3

Very good!Desperate to find a decent Ipad Thai English dic. This one is truly great. It had a rocky start. It did not find the first 5 words of my wife´s spoken words, but it did with the other 5 after. So a bit hit and miss. The great side of this app is the sheer work it went into it. The choice of pronunciation guides alone is a huge gain over the other dics. The clear Thai voice when clicking play, the ability to pinch the size of the display, the separation of the syllables if needed and overall presentation of the app, was worth the huge price. The other 2 Thai apps have been deleted from my Ipad. This one is a keeper..Version: 1.3

Work great !When you need help on the road, very usefull.Version: 1.3

The VERY BEST!I have NEVER paid so much for an app, but this one is EASILY well worth it! TONS better than other apps! LOVE the off-line audio and highly thorough spelling explanation of each Thia word- including a break down of syllables and clear explanation of why certain tones apply. Search in English or Thai with a pop up Thai keyboard. Even those pesky sign fonts that are impossible to read while visiting Thailand are in this! REALLY love the extensive list of ALL vowel sounds, not just the basic ones. Wonderful transliteration for quick pronunciation. This is the very best app I’ve found to study and learn Thai..Version: 2.3

Literally The BestWhile I'm not familiar with the first version, I can say that I've never come across any better dictionary for Thai, or any other language. I actually use this on a daily basis..Version: 2.3

Great App !!!Easy to use and very helpful. Pronounces words for me to learn. Also useful word categories, eg. Food etc. Well done! Please continue to maintain and update app.Version: 2.3

Fantastic update! This new update has totally transformed this app. My congratulations go to the team who worked so hard to redesign and improve it. I live in Thailand and I'm constantly using it to improve and increase my knowledge base. ขอนคุณมากครับ.Version: 2.0

Best language learning app EVERI've had an iphone for 8 years and downloaded oodles of apps, but this is the first review I've ever been moved to write, and for the priciest app I've ever bought. Worth every last penny. Simply excellent, and features such as Find Inside Words" really help you to have a better understanding of how the language is constructed, and therefore a closer feel for the culture. Brilliant, and can't fault it, and even at the price I think it is superb value!.Version: 2.3

Really good app and upgradeWas a bit shocked with the upgrade but after about 5 mins I started to realise how good the new version was. I had really liked the original version but this update rocks. The favourites folders is so handy for reviewing daily words, the keyboard management makes swapping between Eng and Thai easy and the phrases are an excellent way to learn the basics of Thai sentance structure, grammer and tones... Thanks for the nice surprises. :-).Version: 2.0

MaleCan never be enough information, I have visited Thailand 9 times and always have used this App. ThankU, keep up the good work :).Version: 2.0

Best Thai Language resource AppReally is the best all around. Resources are great. Vowels, phrases, etc.. great!.Version: 2.3

Powerfull AppThis app while more updates would be appreciated , never the less it is a powerful app, take the time to go through all the options which has more than many of it’s competitors. As a day today app for Thai language it’s an app I depend on!.Version: 2.3

SuperI can't compare other Thai dictionaries (apart from google translate), but this one is excellent. A few features I like: - zoomable text so my crappy eyes can make out the words, especially Thai letters - has lots of obscure words that I'm frequently surprised it contains (e.g. Pandanus and Star Anise) - developers are happy to get word or definition suggestions - easy to switch between English, Thai or phonetic scripts. Overall, a really excellent app, and worth the money in my opinion..Version: 2.3

Seriously - excellent update! The recent update has transformed this dictionary from an awkward to use, mediocre but full dictionary into a superb smooth and totally functional user experience. I'm blown away. Well done!!.Version: 2.0

No better Thai-English dictionaryI'm learning to speak Thai and this is an invaluable tool to help me with my pronunciation. Useful for both English and Thai speakers..Version: 1.4

Sensational DictionaryHaving been studying Thai for some time now I've come to rely greatly on this app. For it's accuracy in translating words and it's depth. Another very useful feature is the local fonts. See words as they would be depicted in Thai magazines. Brilliant. Keep up the good work..Version: 1.6

This is THE appJust buy it. I’ve been here 16 years and I use it nearly daily. I have studied all of Benjawan’s books — she is the reason I can speak Thai. Thank you, Khun Benjawan 🙏🏼.Version: 2.3

The best there isI have never written an app review, but this is hands down the best Thai language app available. It is expensive compared to the others, but 100% worth it. I’d honestly say it’s worth a whole lot more than the purchase price considering the immense amount of content that it provides. Having an actual Thai person pronounce each word is an indispensable feature. I recently moved to Thailand and can say that this is without a doubt the best Thai language learning product that I have bought, and I’ve bought quite a few! Quit thinking about it and just buy it already..Version: 2.3

Exceptionally goodGreat dictionary and pronunciation; worth every penny. I'd like, however, to not have the place names and the option to delete words I'll never use or not likely to use while I'm learning. A favorites list would also be great..Version: 2.0

Does what you expect, perfectly!Having this and the Windows desktop app version has provided me with a perfect translation tool, and is great when in Thailand to be able to "speak" difficult words with the locals.Version: 1.6

ExcellentYou could learn Thai using nothing but this app alone. Highly recommended!.Version: 2.3

Best Thai Dictionary app on market!I live in Thailand where no one speaks English...this app has been a godsend!.Version: 2.3

Really worth itI was hesitant due to high price, but wow this app is really worth it. So nice to finally have a high-quality, reliable Thai-English dictionary. I would love to see the History as a main button in the lower menu. I feel it's more important and more frequently used than the Help button that is currently there..Version: 1.6

The best everThis app is the best dictionary and phrase usage there is. The audio is a major plus along with the written tone marks for the words. But for me the best ability is to see the words inside the word you are looking up. For example, "to travel" is made up of the combined words เดิน and ทาง to make a new word เดินทาง. This is very helpful in memorizing vocabulary..Version: 2.3

Geng Mahk KrupAbsolutely essential. Well done ..Version: 1.6

Very useful and invaluable dictionary!!Bought many books and 2 apps from this author (Thai for beginners app was also great!) This talking dictionary makes it very easy to listen and learn to pronounce the words. The English romanization system used is also excellent as it covers all the Thai alphabet sounds and tones accurately! Descriptions for word meanings are very descriptive and helps you find the correct entry for the context which you want to use it in. Thank you so much for making this app available on the iPhone! You definitely get what you pay for. Look forward to seeing "Thai for intermediate learners" app!!.Version: 1.4

Worth every penny even if just for tones!Been learning Thai for 4 months. Had this app for one day and already it's solved my confusion with classifiers and helped me correct the tones of some of my basic words. Doesn't let you translate a whole phrase, or haven't found that yet, but even just to use for unknown lexis when forming sentences. Love it that you can type in words using English phonemes to match words you hear! So clever! already gifted it to two other friends - early Xmas presents!.Version: 1.4

OutstandingThis is an excellent product. The dictionary is huge. I can't think of an occasion in the 12 months I have been using this where it hasn't had the word. It has recordings of the Thai pronunciation for each word, which is critical for speaking good Thai. I particularly like the ability to look up words within a word. This has helped me to understand the language more quickly, and learn long words more easily. One suggestion....the ability to mark favorite words for review and/ or a flash card for favorites would help people like me who are learning new Thai vocabulary but need practice in learning words and testing pronunciation. Fabulous product!.Version: 1.4

Superb. Could use an update, but still greatIf you're learning Thai buy this app. It's amazing how much attention and thought has gone into this. Also the Paiboon system if romanization is best in class. That being said, I wish the publisher would update a few things: * The "favorites" system seems to be an afterthought. There's no indication of an item is already favorited and duplicated are possible. It's but the useful feature it could be * iPhone X screen support Still though, this app earned 5 stars from me. Such a great resource for such a niche language..Version: 2.3

So helpfulAs an Englishman living in Thailand, this app has been invaluable. It isn't cheap but it's worth every penny if you are even slightly serious about learning the Thai language. I haven't seen another app that comes close to helping English speakers learn Thai (they all seem to be aimed at the vice-versa). Highly recommended!.Version: 1.4

Used it for years and years.I have had this app since I got a smart phone after first learning basic Thai from the first to Paiboon cassette and books (green one and a red one). Love the app. Use it all the time..Version: 2.3

ExcellentThis App is an indispensable learning aid. While it contains some useful pointers, it is not a structured learning app with staged lessons. Its strength is as a constant companion to verify -and explain - spelling and sounds painlessly and efficiently, and help resolve anomalies and questions posed by material from other sources. It’s like having a native speaker permanently on hand to verify things with. This has been my second major attempt to lean Thai, the first attempt ended in frustration as every encountered question required research to resolve and ground overall progress to a halt. This app has been the difference this time around - rapid verification is essential to maintain momentum and help formulate understanding. It’s the most expensive app I’ve bought to date, but it’s absolutely been worth it and I wouldn’t hesitate to buy it again..Version: 2.3

AmazingPerfect learning resource. So well organized and well done..Version: 2.3

Superb!I never write reviews but this is simply brilliant. Every time I think « it’s a pity you can’t........ » I look in the settings and find the option is already there..Version: 2.3

When’s the update? This app is great!! Ready for an update!!.Version: 2.3

Worth the long wait. Appreciate the care with every clickPaiboon's paper dictionary has long been the clearest and most useful, having English, Thai script and Thai transliteration sections. Their Palm app was great, so I was longing for this iPhone app. After a long wait, it far surpasses my hopes and expectations. No other Thai/English dictionary even comes close to its care and attention to detail and functionality. The depth of functions make it extremely useful for the learner of Thai or English. The handful of additional phonetic letters that Paiboon uses have always made their transliterations so much more precise than other dictionaries, and they preserve that augmented alphabet here, along with super-clear tone rules for every word. I think theirs is the best system of conveying Thai sounds into English. This app maintains the Palm app's speed and intuitiveness, with its predictive text bringing words up very fast. You can look up a word while maintaining a conversation, which is such a breakthrough. So it supports you in the moment, rather than disrupting a conversation while you look something up. This function supports real-life needs and usage, in real-time, as well as rewarding those who want to delve into the details of a word. The ability to hotlink between the 3 different dictionaries makes it incredibly easy to use. Plus the variety of font styles makes it clearer to read signage, handscript, newspaper headlines, etc. The 'words inside' function also gives extra hints about the sense of the word's meaning from its component parts. The font is also clearer than in many Thai dictionaries. And it has a clear vocalised pronunciation for every word. I also like the use of symbols indicating whether a word is formal, spoken only, royal, religious, archaic, poetic, technical, vulgar or offensive. This adult 'rating' approach is far better to the censorship that many dictionaries apply in omitting words that are commonly spoken yet upset prudes who usually get to impose their taboos on everyone. So I salute Paiboon for representing both languages in all their coarse and refined reality. This dictionary is as broad or as narrow as your mind. Many clunky dictionary apps could learn some techniques of interactivity and speed from the writers of this app. Brilliant..Version: 1.3

Best Thai Dictionary App for English speakers by a mileThis is so good that I would rarely use any other dictionaries to look for Thai words. Its fast and convenient to enter search word in English, Thai script, or romanised Thai in any one of several systems. I use Mary Haas romanised system since that is what I am used to. Its not necessary to even know the correct tone of words being searched for! Well worth the money. I don't use the other Thai dictionary apps any longer. Very good linkage system and can copy a word to save area. Someone complained it doesn't speak English, but this dictionary is not designed for Thais at all. Still could be improved: Some common speech words still missing (fortunately very few), e.g. "cheunjai" (refreshing). No ability to search for words or expressions containing a word. Must search from first part only. No easy way to extract words looked up to my vocab learning list, even though can copy the Thai word or the English word (one by one). Would be good if application maintained a vocab list itself of user selected entries. History function doesn't work well enough. A must for all serious Thai learners. Who wants a heavy book? From: Micky Mee Panda.Version: 1.3

The bestDon’t let the old school looking app icon fool you. This is a great app! It is worth the price. There are countless phrases here all with a native speaker pronouncing them with the Thai tones. I would love to see an update with added functionality but even without an update this is a must have app to learn Thai..Version: 2.3

Daily useI am studying in Bangkok and this is invaluable..Version: 2.3
