✓ Great 21st Century DictionaryGrowing up, when I'd ask my parents how to spell something or what a word meant, "Go look it up," was the response every time. I hated it. How do you look up the spelling of a word you don't know how to spell? The Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, with the cover long torn off sat on top of my bedroom desk since 4th Grade was The Dictionary. I still have that Dictionary. I don't use it much anymore because I have one with me 24/7 through the app. Now with MS Word, predictive typing, Google, and Wikipedia, many might think a Dictionary, obsolete. Not me. I use it often, the associated Thesaurus gets just about as much use. My now 5th grade daughter has been hearing the same response my parents gave me to those questions, "Did you look it up?" She still resists, but ultimately, she's learned, the most reliable and quickest way to find you answers is to just "Go look it up." Looking up words electronically isn't the same as thumbing through page after page of wrong words till you hone in on the right one. I picked up a lot of additional words that way that increased both my vocabulary and my spelling abilities stronger. We have to recognize the reality of our instant gratification world. E-mails and "instant messaging" are destroying our ability, and, really, our desire to exchange properly composed notes and correspondence in the pursuit of instant gratification. The spell check features of almost all smart phones and word processors are leading us to virtually abandon learning to spell and look up words. Getting our kids used to looking in a dictionary so they can answer their own questions is really the best countermeasure to these technologies, because it teaches them, among other things, self sufficiency and resourcefulness. This app still allows for them to have most of that experience. Also, it MUST be Webster's. There are so many slang words and phrases and improperly applied words, not only being used, but being taught that we need a trusted "Go To" source. There are several "dictionaries" that have allowed colloquial words or terms that just don't apply correct usage or are allowing non-words to be "brung" into everyday use. Our kids think they know everything (not much has changed in the last 40 or 400 years), so we need a source that even they will recognize and respect. Merriam-Webster's Dictionary App fills all of those better than any other. I put the app on every portable devise we have and put the Merriam-Webster.com link on the desktop of all of our computers..Version: 8.2.9

I use it often, not just for learning definitions, but for obtaining a deeper understanding of the meaning of words. I even use it as a meditative technique, choosing a word such as 'calm' to internalise the full meaning of the word: 'peaceful, stoic, tranquil, serene.' It's very powerful..Version: 10.0.12
