EzSights Celestial Navigation for Positive User Reviews

Mr.Very accurate and easy. I would love to see support for sighting of the celestial objects using iPad on board HD camera to replace a need for Sextant. I use Spyglass instead of Sextant and got my first fix at .4NM radius. Not bad at all.......Version: 1.1.5

BrilliantI use this app at work as a commercial officer. Its quick and accurate, exactly what the modern seafarer needs..Version: 1.1.5

Excellent learning and backup toolI've never done celestial before. This was very easy to use and learn when combined with the instructions on the web site. Like the other review said, use this with the Spyglass App and you don't even need a sextant for reasonable accuracy. I could reliably get a fix within 5 NM each time while in a rolling boat on a windy lake. That should be close enough to find an island. I could see this being a possible emergency backup for use in case of equipment failure to get you there as long as you had a solar charger for your iPod..Version: 1.1.5

Good Program but Hard to LearnThis program offers great capabilities for supporting celestial navigation, but it is somewhat hard to learn to use. In my first hour of trying to use this application, without reading any documentation, I could not succeed in entering two sights I wanted to reduce, and no ways that seemed intuitive to me actually worked. In contrast, when I first tried to use the USSPS Celestial Tools PC program I was able to enter sights right away, reduce the sights, and get a fix. Because I felt that an iPhone app should not be so hard to use, I wrote a caustic negative review. The EZ Sights support personnel wrote me a very helpful email in response to my review, and gave me some help on what I needed to do to enter sights. I have now used EZ Sights to enter sights, reduce sights, and compute fixes. The program does what I want, and I am now happy with its capabilities. It even has the capability to estimate longitude and get a fix from meridian transit observations alone (Use the "Best Fit Method"). In short, I now view this application as having excellent capabilities, but a somewhat hard to learn interface. Expect to need to study documentation (not built into the program) before you can even enter a sight and reduce it. If you are as old with computers as I am, it's reminiscent of learning the idiosyncratic interface of an old, but excellent, DOS program. Once you learn how to use it, it is a good program, and offers good capabilities, especially for the price. I intend to communicate privately with the EZ Sights personnel to offer some suggestions, so that this otherwise excellent program will become more intuitive to use in the future. Will use while in the Coast Guard for funI've always wanted to learn how to use a sextant and now that I have enlisted in the USCG I thought it was time I learned. After fumbling around with calculations and never quite getting the concept I found ezsights and quickly began taking sights around my small town with use of an artificial horizon. It takes a few minutes to learn the UI but once I did getting a sight was extremely simple. I would definitely recommend ezsights to anyone want to learn how to use a sextant..Version: 1.1.6

Great Nav toolBought this to 'learn' how to use my sextant. Really helpful app. Good help tutorial. Plenty of features, some that I'm still learning how to best utilize. Would I buy it again? YES !.Version: 1.1.13

EzSightsThis is a fun way to do serious stuff. I am a beginner and I really like this app..Version: 1.1.6

Sextant PracticeI have found this a great way to practice with a sextant, I use the artificial horizon method and take test sightings from home. The plot on map option then shows how close you are. A great way to build confidence in using the sextant and understanding of the methods used in achieving a position..Version: 1.1.6

Great app!Just purchased this app to augment my rudimentary celnav skills. Great way to check hand calcs and plotting of fixes. Also comes with support for those that may be totally celnav illiterate. Will update after I get more exposure to app..Version: 1.1.13

Nice App need more practiceI like this app But i think i need more practice to get used to it... I like function area makes life much easy..Version: 1.1.6

Very nicely doneA very well designed app for celestial navigation. Ready to dust off the 'ol sextant and put it to work..Version: 1.1.13

Very impressed with help section.Having completed the RYA celestial navigation course quite a few years ago I was very impressed with the help section in this app. It took me through example sightings building my confidence to move on to using a sextant. I followed the stages exactly and found it easy to follow and get a result very quickly. This app was the most expensive I have bought but the ease of its use has allowed that feeling to fade quite quickly. A little more practice for me is needed to be totally confident using the app especially when moving from using the sun to using other bodies but the system seems to be straight forward. Using the app on the iPad gives a large screen to change data, I have not tried it on an iPhone yet. At the moment I am happy to rate this app with 5 stars for usability and help for the confused or out of practice!.Version: 1.1.13

First classI am just about to set of on an 8 day offshore passage and have worked up all the theory for taking sights of celestial bodies. Having tested this software with my manual calculations it has proved to be excellent. It helps give piece of mind in case you make any human errors. Very good indeed. Marcus s.Version: 1.1.6

Amazing appThis app is incredible. It’s great because it can assist you with finding and shooting stars, and then check your work if you do it by hand. The ability to go back to different dates and retrieve information is incredibly helpful. 10/10..Version: 12.1.3

Takes the work out of celestial navigationIf you want to concentrate on taking sights without doing all the reduction work this is the app you are looking for..Version: 12.1.3

AceVery good app! Easy to use and doe's the job very well..Version: 1.1.13

Powerful toolAs has been said, it takes the hard out of the complicated bit of calculation of a fix which on a small boat, anything that makes life easier is welcomed!.Version: 12.1.3

Fabulous navigation toolThis is a very easy app to use. It has enabled me to practice my sextant skills which have gone rusty since I last used them. This app has everything to obtain a celestial fix without purchasing expensive tables and almanacs. Fun and provides accurate fixes..Version: 1.1.6

Excellent! This is really clear. I use it to check my workings and to give me confidence in my accuracy. Great app..Version: 1.1.13

Just made my first fixLong been interested in the basics of astro navigation. I got a bit confused at first but their website has all the details of how to use..Version: 1.1.6

Excellent ApVery well thought out ap. I have recently completed a cell nav class and purchased a sextant. This will be the ap I use to practice my skills..Version: 1.1.13

Does what it saysGood app takes the hassle out of celestial nav. Great circle calculations would be nice..Version: 1.1.6

GoodEasy to use and you have all the tools to make the calculations. Nice kit to have and learn on how to calculate your position using stars..Version: 1.1.16

Great AppI'm learning celestial navigation and this app has made it a lot easier to grasp the concepts of navigating without a GPS..Version: 1.1.13

Great app for celestial navigationApp works as described and is easy enough for a beginner like me to understand to take sights. Ran a few example problems and it nailed the fix with ease..Version: 12.1.1

Brilliant and easyThere are two parts to celestial navigation - taking a sight and reducing it. This app does the second part for you easily and quickly and allows you to concentrate on improving your technique with the sextant itself. If using it for real then you have the advantage that it is all self contained with no need for internet connection so ( as long as your device has power) you can reduce a sight in mid Pacific! I particularly like all the options for corrections, especially Dip Shor which enables easy practice inland if near a lake or similar body of water Also the basic almanac data that is available through the app so that if you want to you can cross check with conventional sight table reduction calculation.Version: 12.1.2

Brilliant !EzSights makes it so much easier to obtain a good fix, either by intercept or best fit - with well thought out screens and a really great interface. It will be difficult to keep doing it the traditional way with such a good app to hand! Highly recommended (and ezAlmanac too).Version: 1.1.13

Great for learningI don't have enough experience with this app yet to give it a full 5 stars but so far it has been quite good. The tutorial functions are really nice and built in, step-by-step scenario instructions will have you getting your first fixes from either the sun or stars quickly. I will re-evaluate one I have had more time with ezSights..Version: 1.1.13

Outstanding - Thank youI don't normally submit reviews but felt this app justifies an exception. I have been practising astro for many years and have taken and reduced sights through each of 13 Atlantic crossings and extended trips to further flung parts of the world. This app is exactly what I have been waiting for on iOS. It seems intuitive enough to use from the outset, sufficiently comprehensive to cover most eventualities and well designed. The only problem I've encountered was working out how to delete a sight - I found it in the end but a side swipe over the sight to be deleted might be a more familiar approach? I should stress that I haven't used the app in anger at sea yet but I have run a number of my historical sights through it and it produces reassuringly consistent results. I know that GPS is killing off the skill of astro nav and that many of those who do practice the art like to do everything long-hand, but when you're tired, conditions are poor, time is tight or you just want to check your workings this is exactly the app you need. I'll be using it through my forthcoming trip to the Arctic this summer. It may never attract the scale of take-up of Angry Birds but you have one very happy customer. Thanks and good luck..Version: 1.1.12

Mr mad dogGreat app, layout is brilliant..Version: 1.1.13
