The Spectator Magazine for Positive User Reviews

The best readI have been searching for a publication that speaks my language for years. I’ve tried new wave independent papers to large tabloids, but they never quite got the point. The Spectator is without doubt the sanest and yet entertaining read I have tried. Great writers, fantastic narrative, common sense perspectives on items that need less hysteria applied to them. It is a much needed breath of fresh air. Thank you..Version: 4.8.0

Fantastic Weekly & Great WebsiteI stopped reading magazines many years ago when I got fed up with Men’s Health and FHM. But back in late 2015 I started finding politics a lot more exciting when Trump and the Brexit Referendum started dominating the internet. By 2016 I was reading the Spectator regularly and checking the website most days. Whilst I think the magazine is a tad expensive at £4.95 an issue, at least if you buy it every week, a monthly subscription fee of £9.99 for unlimited (online) access to the website and unlimited access to ALL back issues (going back as fat as 1800 and something) is a heck of a bargain. Remember not all web articles feature in the magazine so the online subscription gives you everything. There is also a free podcast and daily email news updates, so instead of wading through a load of rubbish and adverts online each day I just rely on email updates each day to keep me up to date with what’s going on. If you don’t want to buy the magazine each week or don’t have time to read it, go for the cheaper monthly digital subscription and have EVERY issue and article in your phone! Great value and highly recommended..Version: 4.8.0

Good Read and a Good Platform to Enjoy It OnI've long been a subscriber to The Spectator, in more recent years on my kindle but something seemed missing. Those that know the magazine know it isn't exactly bristling with graphics or photos but is peppered just enough to be interesting and engaging. This was something that was missing in the kindle version but definitely recaptured on the app. It feels like I've got my magazine back with all the benefits of accessing it online. Well done Speccie team..Version: 4.0

A beacon of sanityMany would accuse the Spectator of political bias, but most of these critics are tied to much more ideologically charged media. The pot calling the kettle black. If you take time to read the articles it quickly becomes apparent that this kettle is boiling over with common sense, clarity, factual analysis and diverse points of view, some of which are thought provoking, and challenging whatever the readers political preferences might be. Well done!.Version: 7.0.0

Smart and funny- best mag everI love the wit, insight and speaking up when others hide behind pretences and fake news. Keep going! Should be a mandatory reading material- especially in Canada.Version: 3.2

Longevity of excellenceThe Spectator was first published in 1711. Although I turned 50 last year I’m not old enough to know how good it was back then. But very few things last that long unless they’re good. In addition, when there is huge competition for our attention (and therefore cash) publications and podcasts that don’t change and innovate won’t survive. The Spectator, under the reassuring editorship of Fraser Nelson, has managed to navigate the tricky path of sticking to its founding principles whilst maintaining its relevance to today. Thought provoking, informative, occasionally funny and aways beautifully written, every article is worth reading. If you are interested in politics, the opinions of well read writers and contributors, with a nod to the arts, culture and food and drink, then there really is no other publication that betters it. A must read James Usher.Version: 7.2

Travel EssentialI hunt out WiFi hotspots every Thursday whenever, wherever I travel - breakfasts on Thursdays are thus enriched and extended by the inclusion of the Spectator. Being rather old this method of delivery still adds a touch of miracle to Thursdays, the more so when I’m muddling around somewhere in the depths of India. I love the way that articles are unpredictable and are able to infuriate, amuse, puzzle and/or challenge. Such fun....Version: 4.2.0

Good content but the app crashes for a pastimeThe old app was solid however through the new app I have found it easy to navigate the content, or would have. I’ve given up trying to download the magazine, as this invariably fails, and sometimes trying links to some current items just makes the app crash. Sometimes cured by a reboot of my iPad, sometimes not….Version: 5.1.1

Liberating read.Refreshingly opinionated and outspoken. My new favorite read..Version: 3.2

So refreshing....I’m British but have lived in Latin America for over 40 years (pretty much all my adult working life) and for the last 13 or so have been in Acapulco, Mexico where I am now semi-retired. After getting fed up with the banality of the US media and frankly the “pinko bias” of the BBC too, I took out an on line subscription to “The Spectator” and I’m loving it. It’s so refreshing to read common sense commentary expressed in clear concise English and with that familiar British “twist” that I can still fully identify with despite having lived overseas for so long. Many congratulations on your excellent periodical and keep up the good work. Best wishes, Phil Hutchins.Version: 4.8.0

5/5 for the magazine, but 2/5 for the appGreat magazine - yes there is a right wing slant, but the world’s oldest regular publication has a free thinking and libertarian attitude which is a refreshing change from so many closed minds these days. However ... The new app simply isn’t up to scratch, and in fact is a step backwards from the old app. Frequent issues include the download not working properly, the refusal to remember what page you were last on, and random freezes/crashes. But when it works it’s a joy..Version: 5.1.0

Up and Down.I first read the Speccy in the mid 70s. It delights me, then heads off too far right and I swap the Statesman for it : but not for long. This became the pattern of my affair with the Speccy. This is interspersed with my love/ hate with Catholicism when the Tablet breaks the pattern and off we go again. I’m close to detoxing from religion - but not from the Spectator . Giving offers to kids or students is like hooking the vulnerable on fags. Now, the old and frail; that’s a different matter but might put the opposition out of business..Version: 7.2

Best All Round Commentary and Opinion MagazineI used to get the Spectator online via my Kindle, which disappeared along with the all the online editions I had paid for and was saving for bad times. This app is much better, and while I wouldn't be without the print version for reading in the bath, it's great to be able to access all their outstanding pieces whenever I have a free moment. I don't think one can find better commentary and opinion online or in print, and I look forward to reading it each week, even if I don't always agree with every point of view..Version: 4.0

Great magazineHowever, why they felt the need to make the app worse with the recent update I do not comprehend..Version: 7.0.0

Fantastic app. Fantastic content.I really like the new Spectator app. It has never crashed and updates seamlessly. My favourite feature is having the podcasts embedded within for easy reference. The content is of excellent quality and insightful as ever. A subscription is worth every penny!.Version: 7.2

The Perfect FriendThe Spectator is like a good friend who helps you makes sense of the world. It’s the perfect blend of politics, humor, and culture. In the chaos of the world it’s comforting to have The Speccie in my life..Version: 7.3

Specce AppGreat app for a great mag. Good navigation, excellent hi res pics, especially in absolutely essential arts and book review section..Version: 3.2

Undoubtedly the best...Greatly enjoy The Spectator - especially on the iPad app. Excellent writing, balanced and nuanced views...and, oh! The cartoons!.Version: 4.2.0

Love the magLove your mag! Sometimes hooting out loud. You cheer up this old lady locked up in deepest sw France..Version: 4.8.0

The SpectatorReading the Spectator is like going to a party and talking with fascinating people who are unpredictable. Most are charming and amusing in an inimitably British way even though their opinions vary widely and may sometimes be strange. I highly recommend it..Version: 2.1.2

Okay but problems that need addressingThe scrapbook is back but it’s broken the tab system. You used to be able to customise the tab order and swipe across to move between tabs. The scrapbook tab doesn’t support swiping and can’t be hidden. You can’t read the coffee house articles offline either. This isn’t great if your commuting and don’t have connectivity..Version: 5.1.1

Excellent magazine but app doesn’t work on older phonesThis app keeps crashing and won’t stay open for more than a few seconds at a time..Version: 5.1.2

Balanced and informativeAnyone who thinks the Spectator is just for people for lean right if centre has never read the magazine. It has very well written and informative articles from a broad spectrum of contributors (sometimes much to the annoyance of the readers - just check the comments pages!). I find it an excellent source of balanced analysis on current events - going beyond the emotive twittosphere. So much so that I felt compelled to write this, my first review!.Version: 4.8.0

Great app, great articles!A breath of fresh air in today's news oultlets! Recommend.Version: 3.2

Love the Speccie but app keeps crashingApp keeps crashing on my iPad..Version: 4.8.0

The app is a disasterThe Spectator represents the very best of British journalism but this app is the clumsiest they have produced so far. Counter-intuitive and irritating, you download a copy of the magazine for a journey and then find that 2 pages in it won’t let you continue without logging on, even though the whole point of downloading it was in order to read offline. So stuck on a train without internet access, you can’t read the magazine you have just downloaded in order to read!.Version: 5.1.0

Pretty much the only thing worth reading these days! I LOVE ITDon’t get me wrong, I’m not the kind of person who only reads views that are likely to be in line with my own beliefs. I enjoy the M Paris column as much as the Delingpole/Liddle pages, as an example. The whole publication is beautifully crafted. Even though it’s available free on Readly (A few days old). I prefer to pay for the app (subscriptions ) and support the work of Fraser Nelson and his wonderful team..Version: 4.2.0

One of the best political magazines aroundThis is such a pleasure to read compared to the usual dull "consensus media" magazines on the market today. Intelligent analysis, thought provoking articles laced with classic British humour throughout..Version: 3.0.0

ExcellentA magazin worth reading!.Version: 3.2

Good weekly…Good weekly. Touches on a some good subjects, and is actually pretty objective for a publication that is known to be more aligned with the right. I have no political affiliation or loyalty to any party, or any side of the political spectrum - I take issue with left, right and centre. But I really just want to read well-written, erudite journalism which I feel The Spectator offers. I don’t seek out publications that confirm or pander to my beliefs. That adds nothing to my world view, and I am very much someone who likes to understand both sides of bipartisan arguments. The app is looks very classy and sophisticated (as is standard for The Spectator’s publication style), and it is a very easy app to navigate. I also subscribe to NS and I am very satisfied with both. Thanks Spectator!.Version: 7.3

Your former format was easier to readI preferred your former format which laid out the articles on one page, enabling me to pick and choose which to read and in what order. I do like being able to access the latest news instead of opening Coffee Shop et al from my email programme. I do enjoy the Spectator and would not want to do without it..Version: 7.0.0

Amazing magazine, decent appLike a cry of reason from beyond the darkness that is the modern conservative movement in the US, The Spectator celebrates common sense over zealotry and reasonable discourse over ideology. Let the left be blinded by beliefs and ridiculous schemes. I want a magazine that deals with the world as it is, not as it "should" be, and that magazine is The Spectator..Version: 3.2

Very good App. Media use could be improved.Excellent reader App. Latest iteration is top class and loads quickly. Well laid out. Downside if you are living in Australia is that you don't get access to the Australia section that comes with the paper version. While an excellent reader app, it has no multi media utility. So can't access the crossword and no video. The crossword utility lags (say) the Melbourne Age newspaper. The video lags T3 and Robb Report..Version: 2.0

Spectator app - more means less and new means worseThe old app worked which is all you want. The new one never remembers where you finished reading an article, always defaults to the news page when you want to go back to the magazine. Sometimes the current edition doesn’t even appear and then returns the next day. Who on earth developed this app - can’t have been a reader? Have gone back to reading in print..Version: 5.1.1

Just the right amount of technologyThe app works perfectly and without jitters Easy navigation, equates to flicking through a paper copy which is sometimes hard to come by in far flung parts of the world. A slight gripe is that for digital subscribers only, the coffee house blog site doesn’t seem to recognise oneself. Perhaps coffee house blog within the app is the solution..Version: 4.2.0

TakiBy far the best observer of human dignity and frailty told with witty and self-effacing humor! Surely my best read of the week. Ephcharisto polu, adelphe, M. Marchlewski, s.j..Version: 4.8.0

A must have!I don’t always read every article but I do always need to know the Speccie is available to me whenever I want some intellectually honest political food for thought. Love him or hate him, Taki is unmissable, plus regulars like Charles Moore, Rod Liddle and Douglas Murray can be quite brilliant. Read The Spectator and find out..Version: 4.7.0

DeluxeAlmost always first class reporting and great fun to have Rod and Taki to lighten the moment.....with sage comments along with the irony. I’m a fan!.Version: 4.2.0

British Expat in USAThe most intelligent magazine on mostly UK current affairs issues, as well as US ones too. It’s the clever presentation of pertinent information that makes it unfortunately a rare publication. Highly recommended for any critical mind..Version: 4.8.0

You rock! You were perfect. Well, as close to perfect as I thought rational to expect. The one bugbear I had was no dictionary lookup through pressing a word. A serious shortcoming for me given the stellar quality of your articles. And the fact English is my fourth language and there was many a sophisticated turn of phrase or a word I simply didn’t know. And that took me forvever to note down and look up. Being able to forego manual lookup is a dream come true! Thank you!.Version: 5.1.0

UnreliableI've just remembered why I dislike this App - its downloads are unreliable. I flip flop between the Kindle version (it's so-so) and this one (more readable) but then I give up on the App because the download fails (this time it's the Christmas edition) and flop back to Kindle.Version: 3.2

Great jobMy week wouldn’t be complete without it..Version: 4.5.0

New version in Sept 2022 not good!Having registered my frustration with the new app the developers got in touch. They’re stepping up and ensuring the future app will be better. Kudos to them for that and I look forward to helping in any way. Having some user testing and feedback before releasing it is a great idea and I’m happy to go back to 5 stars on this basis! Yes the new app has some quirks, but bear with it for now. The future one will come along soon enough and should be great!.Version: 7.0.0

SpectatorHave loved and enjoyed this Magazine for many years. Love the straight talking and Independent views. I would continue subscribing just for Taki, Jeremy Clark (bless him) and Melissa Kite. Great stuff!.Version: 7.2

The source for political insightThe most stimulating and thought provoking magazine out. There is a need for such in the UK if the nation is to be saved from the straight jacket of "political correctness" and the need to preserve freedom of expression..Version: 3.1

The “ new” Spectator appUnfortunately I upgraded to this app two weeks ago. It is much worse than the old one. You can no longer tap on the photos/illustrations to enlarge them nor can you flip through the cartoons as before. The text sizing is limited to only three options. It should be scaleable. The lauded connectivity to the Spectator webpage, coffee house etc is hopeless. Othe defects will doubtless become apparent. Scratch this and go back to the old one..Version: 4.6.1

Spectator AppWorst newspaper app ever..Version: 5.1.0

Irelands violent men of peace by Douglass MurrayEnjoyed reading his article which was true to a point as it stinks as to how the IRA leaders were rewarded . As a former member of the RUC they were a disgrace and killed more of their own side with violence for not doing what they were instructed and many forced by fear to fight for them . I also served in the 22SAS before the troubles and the top instructors of the regiment were Irish from the South of Ireland and from memory I think 480K Irish died fighting for the UK government even though their own country was neutral during the war and were awarded I think 7 VCs for bravery and in my time in the regiment many were Irish myself included.Version: 7.3

Perfect companionThe Spectator is the one magazine out of all others I take that would be my choice if I could only have one magazine. It is full of interesting, humorous and intelligent articles. I recently cancelled my daily edition of The Times because although an excellent newspaper it took up far too much of my time. The Spectator as it says above is the perfect companion..Version: 4.2.0

MrWonderful writing, a great read to end the working week..Version: 3.2

UK Politics & Culture for Cosmopolitans...Unsurpassed insiders' views of UK politics, from grand strategy through titillating gossip. First class reviews of the UK's manifold cultural offerings..Version: 4.0

TruthfulI found it refreshing when I discovered Douglas Murray for the first time last year because I could see that he told the truth and I have always thought Andrew Neil passionately cares about the truth so when they recommended The Spectator I thought I must try it. I now think the Spectator cares about the truth.........not many newspapers or magazines or politicians do. I feel I have found a gem..Version: 4.8.0

Improved app for a great magazineThe new version is an improvement because it returns me accurately to where I last left off reading the magazine, and has a larger font. I am not so keen on the more complicated procedure for deleting/archiving old issues. But it's great that my postal subscription continues to allow me also to read The Spectator on an iPad at no extra cost..Version: 4.0

Shares incorrect linkAs much as I love the app, it’s simple red and white yet catching bold letters there is a little improvement required. Somehow, whenever I try to share some write on Facebook or WhatsApp, it does not share the targeted link but will share some other link from the same day. Example if I wanted to share link to the article “x” from today, it will share the content of “article “y” from today itself. Developers, please look into this..Version: 5.1.4

Great magazineInformative, well written, up-to-date. It’s been published since 1870!.Version: 4.8.0

Weekly laughsExcellent app. It works. Extremely easy to navigate. Well informed and researched articles. Columnists I have come to care about. Bitchy, satirical, outrageous, right wing, left wing (sometimes) always persuasive. LOL.Version: 3.2

Light of journalismIn today’s media it’s hard to find what we used to know as journalism. We understand and accept to some degree, that news papers and the folks that write for them have always had a political taste one way or the other. But today it’s gone Crazy, lies, hatred and propaganda fills our ears. The Spector, is for me, a ray of hope in dark times. Not forgetting that humour, particularly in adversity, is important, actually I would say vital, as an ex Royal Marnie Commando, It brings about humility in the simplest of ways, and seeing the world though “Human’ eyes is lacking in our new Snapchat world. I would unreservedly recommend the Spectator and it’s elite group of Journalists to any reader..Version: 7.3

Highly recommendedSimply the best economic, political and philosophical comment I read. Keep it up Fraser and team!.Version: 3.2

In defence of humourI like the Spectator because it is so well written. Its contributors bring gravitas, knowledge and style; their scribblings, spiced with a delightful sense of humour. My sort of humour! As I read the daily sermons about this serious and virtuous Anglo sphere; rifted by ‘Wokery’ and deadened by self-righteousness, the Spectator calls out ‘phoneys’, rejecting their victimhood to the sound of eggshells crunching under-foot. All of which adds insight, but is essential to the preservation of humour and irony, in a world so lacking in perspective..Version: 7.0.0

Lucid, Witty, InsightfulProbably the best weekly ever published. Writing is always top-shelf, opinion is spot on..Version: 3.2

One of the BestI've been a Spectator reader for perhaps twenty years and consider the magazine one of the best available. As an American citizen, I tend to skip over much of the writing on British domestic politics, but the Spectator offers so very much more. There's an amazing variety in the subject matter on offer. The reviews are useful. Most of all, the use of language is precise; the articles concise. I'm old fashioned enough to believe that what's worth saying not only may but must be said clearly. The Spectator's writing is the antithesis of the usual prose of wet concrete that infest journals like (to pick one at random) the New York Review of Books. And the Spectator is often quit funny, too. Such a deal. The app has been greatly improved over the years. Early versions of the app made reading a bit of a penance. Those day are mercifully over..Version: 2.2.7

IT department - don’t spring new apps without any previous warning…IT depts justify their existence by making, in the main, unnecessary and superfluous alterations to something that worked perfectly well in the beginning, and the new Spectator app is no exception. This is not to say the original app was perfect; it wasn’t. But the second revision (also unasked for, except possibly by the IT department) removed, for example, the ability to search the etymology of words through a Wikipedia link which was a great asset in the first app. After many complaints - and I was an early and vigourous participator -this facility was restored, but only grudgingly and to a measly degree. This current version jumps all over the place, takes the reader back to the beginning unasked, cannot find the readers previous location without a degree of accuracy and flickers and flits around the screen like a newborn colt. I have two recommendations to IT staff. Firstly if something works don’t muck around with it, and secondly don’t alter things unless the customers ask you to. Always remember, the customer knows the app far better than you think you do - they are the ones who use it, not you..Version: 7.0.0

First rateAn excellent - one might say unique - source of information of all things literary and political. Well worth it. Witty and erudite, timely and timeless, it would be cheap at twice the price..Version: 4.0

Brilliant broad church polemics and very amusing too!I look forward to The Spectator magazine and read it from cover to cover. There are some writers I disagree with like Matthew Parrish, and others that are left wing. But it all adds up to a broad spectrum take on life in Great Britain and elsewhere, today. The writers are well informed and usually amusing and cover politics, economics, cookery, books and the arts, crosswords, cartoons and a myriad of varying topics every week. A great investment and you can also download the blogs and videos and enjoy them on your iPad etc. The Spectator also champions freedom of the press, the basic tenet of a healthy democracy, and freedom of speech. So 10/10 as far as I’m concerned..Version: 4.6.1

Night Mode PleaseBrilliant magazine with a brilliant app. However, it would be greatly appreciated for those of us read before bed time, to see an update that brings night mode! Also I’d like to see the iPad version of the app not a mere enlarged version of the iPhone app. Is it possible to make the iPad version more like an e-magazine rather than a webpage? All in all thank you for all the brilliant covers and articles. Keep up the good work!.Version: 5.1.4

SpecMagazine is the best but the download system is rank. Also in App spotlight is pretty useless as only looks in downloaded articles, it should look on the web..Version: 2.2.5

WellIt’s the kind of magazine whose unpredictability, married with challenge, enthusiasm and perception, means that I invariably start reading at any point, any week, with whatever catches my eye, which is intrinsically attractive and entertaining and keeps me subscribing even when I feel that it’s time for a break after at least 25 years. I’m reminded of someone who wrote to a Robert Robinson radio programme saying ‘I’ve been listening to your programme for 25 years - it’s crap”. I know what he means. But the Spectator isn’t crap..Version: 4.8.0

Spectator magazine -the appThe app used to be quite good but a few months ago it abandoned the contents page as an easy method of reading the magazine. Now, one is nudged from article to article. Doubtless there is some method of navigating that I haven’t deduced but I still miss being able to read what I want as opposed to what my iPad wants. The magazine is essential reading to provide a sensible view of the UK in the 21st century..Version: 7.3

The Cream of Contemporary British CommentarySlightly to the left of the WSJ and much more to the right of the NY Times, the Spectator combines the very best of British commentary on world politics and the arts. The contributions of the weekly columnists are erudite and constantly entertaining. Overall, the best weekly read for anyone with the most marginal interest in UK culture but beyond this a fine-edged view of word events..Version: 3.2

Brilliant Magazine, wish the new app was more stableRefreshing to read interesting writing on on wide range of topics from a multiple perspectives. New app is really unstable. A few problems so far: “Pick up where you left off” does not work with downloaded magazine issues App is annoyingly unstable, can’t read a full issue without it closing and restarting a few times Dark/night reading mode would be a great addition.Version: 5.0.4

Political insanity related in an entertaining way...The Spectator’s politics are as far from mine as it is possible to get. That’s what I like about reading it, because you can see the mechanics of a conservative outlook - - even when it morphs into semi bonkers libertarianism- being outlined in what in the surface look like perfectly reasonable opinions. But I love the quality and entertainment of the writing..Version: 4.2.0

Still great after all these yearsWell done to the editors and authors for maintaining a very high standard. It also appeals to my conservative standards and beliefs. It is always great to find like-minded folk. Keep it up..Version: 4.0
