1Writer - Markdown Text Editor for Positive User Reviews

Excellent AppThis is one of the best apps I have ever used and guess what: I don’t have to pay for a stupid subscription! It’s a one time price - like an app should be. It’s better than Bear and you don’t have to pay for a subscription. And it does all I need it to do. It’s simple and works great. I use it for all of my note taking and writing. You can organize your notes with folders and with hashtags and that works great for me..Version: 2.9.5

Best of Markdown CropThe best iOS Markdown editor. I'm currently using 1Writer on iOS and Byword on OS X. If the developer's 1Writer for Mac is as good as his/her iOS version, he/she will take a lot of marketshare away from today's most popular apps..Version: 2.0

Best Way to Access nvALTI can easily sync with Dropbox and have had no issues with finding and making notes between devices. The setup was easy and the UI is clean and clear, making switching between nvALT and 1Writer seamless..Version: 3.3.6

Nice App!Clean visual design and simple workflow that allows you to write posts in Markdown and publish to Dropbox. Just what I was after. The keyboard shortcuts are a great value add..Version: 1.2.5

In loveThis app nails every use case I want. Wonderful work!.Version: 3.3.1

Superb appIf only this app was available for the Mac. What an excellent program. I use it as an iPad complement to NValt and it works beautifully. It’s also beautifully designed, provides all kinds of flexibility, works with TextExpander. Just a great program. Highly recommended, and I’ve tried almost all of them..Version: 2.8.3

Exactly what I need in every way.I needed automatic Dropbox sync with Scrivener text files, plus markup support, plus customisable keyboard, plus cursor keys on the keyboard, plus keycode/Touch ID locking to keep little fingers away from my work. 1Writer delivers each flawlessly and has worked exactly the way it should for YEARS. No unnecessary changes, no suddenly not syncing, no lost files, no pro edition or subscription shenanigans, and no ‘beautiful’ design nonsense that wrecks your workflows every year..Version: 3.2

Excellent app, replacement for permanoteJust started using 1Writer and I find the interface great and customizability of the actions and extended keyboard row to be fantastic. It was hard to find the settings for a while (have to swipe from left side of the screen). I also suggest searching the 1Writer actions directory website for easy actions to install and tweak. Really looking forward to using this. I used to use Permanote, but when I upgraded my phone, I could not longer use the standalone version. The current Permanote version charges a subscription, and the price is just a bit too much for me for an app..Version: 3.3.6

(Almost) perfect iPad text editor, terrific valueExcellent text/markdown editor, great for short notes and longer pieces alike. A stand-out feature for me is being able to use a Dropbox folder as a location for all my (markdown) files, so that I can edit the files interchangeably from the iPad or the Mac. The [[wiki-linking]] and #tag support are also good. The absence of grammar and style checking so-called features are actually a plus for me – their “artificial stupidity” almost always makes my writing worse and just gets in the way. I’m a grown-up: I don’t need an app to tell me what is an adverb. A couple of things would make it perfect for me: - a keyboard shortcut to search for & open files in one go (like in Drafts, Obsidian, etc.) – it’s frustrating to have to take your hands off the iPad keyboard and poke at the screen just to open a different file - a keyboard shortcut to move backwards and forwards though your recently-edited files.Version: 3.3.1

Fantastic markdown appDelightful app that does exactly what it says. Markdown and plaintext notes synced with Dropbox. Great editor features and wiki links are a nice bonus..Version: 3.1

Currently my favorite simple markdown editorIt’s a simple app that gets the job done, integrates well with iCloud and Dropbox, and doesn’t crash (unlike some prominent non-free editors I’ve tried). Currently my go-to markdown editor even though I have a paid subscription to a competing app. One complaint: I don’t see a way to increase the font size for easier viewing. Also, while there may be a feature to create footnotes/endnotes, I haven’t seen it..Version: 3.3.6

IPad app I use mostRock solid writing and coding tool. This has become my main note-taking tool on my iPhone. Clean interface and text view, and it's stable. And no feature creep!.Version: 3.3.6

The best way to edit your collection of text files on iOSPerfect companion to nvAlt on the Mac..Version: 2.9.1

Markdown for all1Writer is a great Markdown application, not only is it simple to use for those who want a powerful, yet simple tool; but if you know javascript, you can extend it and customize aspects of how it works into a truly powerful editor for your most challenging needs. It is more powerful then Byword (which I own and use regularly); but where Byword has become less used over time, 1Writer has become my default writing app on my iPad and iPhone. I would love a Mac version; but until that comes, I can use MacDown or Byword there. The price and features are solid, the library of available add-ons is nice and useful and as noted, if you know javascript, you can create your own. Simply put, a great tool for anyone writing using Markdown..Version: 3.0.4

Works with nvaltI have a big folder full of txt documents in my Dropbox. On Mac i use nvalt, on ios i use this.Version: 2.8

Best Update Ever- inline images - edit text of multiple file types - download and preview any file type IOS supports Still elegant and simple. This is the best of all of the note-taking/text apps. The cognoscenti bloggers love Bear. But, Bear uses tags for organization. 1Writer uses folders on Dropbox. What this means is that 1Writer syncs with ANY text editor on Mac or PC. The other note/text apps require their own client on Mac or PC. 1Writer also offers an excellent URL Scheme so it is as programmable as any other editor among those that do not have an embedded scripting language, which is overkill unless you are looking for a time-waster instead of an app for getting work done. Having tried every credible text app, several of which are good, 1Writer is the best..Version: 2.9.2

Quality softwareI was searching for a replacement for Permanote and after trying several poor apps I found 1Writer. Excellent app, just the right amount of functionality, it works perfectly, integrates well with Dropbox and iCloud, and support is excellent, with a rapid answer to a question I asked via Twitter. Well worth the money. The only improvement that I could wish for, which Permanote had, would be a keyboard macro bar, with keys to insert custom strings, date, time and so on..Version: 3.0

Go to app! But missing something...Love 1Writer! Been a user for years. Reliable and excellent to work on markdown notes. Why the 4 stars? Would love to see a better UI, particularly with filenames wrapping so we can read the whole name. Otherwise, excellent. Looking forward to future developments!.Version: 3.0.4

Best notes and markdown editorI’ve tried almost all markdown apps for years and 1Writer is the best, hands down. I switched to it probably in 2012 and I use it daily on iPhone and iPad as Notes replacement. The developers keep updating generously and they never charged for extras. I really wish for 2 features though: 1. RTL support (would pay for it, IAP). 2. Mac version (probably it’s easier now to import it using Apple’s project Catalyst! Would buy it the moment it’s released). Thanks for the developers who are a great example of commitment and non-greed. Will definitely donate to keep them going. I will highly recommend this app..Version: 3.0

Very nice markdown appNice design. Automatic preview of markdown while typing, with full preview also available. Flexible dropbox syncing, with option to choose existing or create new folders to sync to. Can copy posts to HTML which means I can format as I write and then paste HTML into my blog. This is now my first choice as a markdown writing app..Version: 1.3.1

Wonderful note-taking applicationI wanted a simple note-taking app that worked with plain-text and would sync with Dropbox and 1Writer is perfect! I love the extended keyboard, which places markdown formatting at your fingertips. File transclusion and wikilinks are a huge plus. Works great for syncing with other plaintext editors on my (non-Apple) devices, like vim and obsidian. Lots of handy little settings, like the ability to have a new note open on start and to pin notes to the notification center. No a YAML header support yet but that’s no big deal. Buy the app, it’s worth it!!!.Version: 3.3.4

Markdown preview as defaultA few subtle differences puts this on my dock over Byword/others... 1. It shows the preview version of the markdown first so links/formatting are easy to read straight away. It makes more sense to me that way around (then clicking edit to change text). The in-app browser feels cleaner when linking off too. 2. The Dropbox folder management is much more flexible allowing you to change ordering and bring in folders from anywhere in your account (not just in the App folder). 3. Clean way of handling image/upload embedding. 4. Clean tagging system. Superb start. Really hope the developer pushes forward with this one. Suggestions to get my fifth star: 1. Better shortcut keys. Their arrangement is a bit awkward, brackets don't auto-close. This is probably the weakest area... it doesn't quite make the actual text entry as pleasant as say ByWord/iA Writer. Being able to customise layout/selection for the shortcut keys would be nice. 2. Looser swipe gestures to go back/forward. Sometimes only goes one-way, can't use the whole screen (just the top-left corner). Niggles/nice to haves: 1. I'm not a fan of the icon (makes it hard to wear on the dock all the time!). The W doesn't look very crisp (anti-aliasing?) and the shade of red doesn't go well with other icons I find (subjective of course). 2. A Mac app for total synergy would be awesome (right now though, it works nicely alongside Byword for Mac). 3. Quick-launch options (create new document, choice of folder to open). 4. Perhaps a full text search? (Tagging is close enough for me though.).Version: 1.0

Really appreciate this for ZettelkastenHope more features are added overtime (like creating custom shortcuts for each of the actions maybe!?) One of my main issues with this app is not being able to see the whole title of your notes. So please fix this first. Everyone who uses this for ZK notes complains about this and I imagine it would be a relatively easy fix. Would be nice also if you could open links in the side window like Bear which makes it easy to flip through the links in a note to quickly take a look at them. FWI in Bear the right window stays put when you click links and the left window opens the link. In 1Writer when you click a link you leave the page you’re on even if you have two windows open..Version: 3.1

Own your data!Over the years, I have tried or used almost all the note apps in the store. There are many good ones using proprietary formats and in-house storage, but now I find it best to own my data. That means using a universal format (Markdown) that can be opened by other apps, and having the ability to decide where I store my notes (personal cloud, locally or other). There are very few polished apps that fulfill these criteria, and 1Writer is the best that I have found. One-time payment is also a big plus compared the the subscription model from competing apps. In short, strongly recommended! Please keep up the development for years to come….Version: 3.3.5

Great start to a great appLove the nice clean UI. Everything seems intuitive and well thought through. It's nice to have Dropbox integration, it's going to make blogging with this app great. My only request would be to support other plain text document types. I would love to be able to write some HTML as well. Hopefully we will see this in a future update..Version: 1.3.1

Perfection! This app is simply perfection - now with word count, which I've been waiting for, and it's now here! Thanks so much for making my writing life easier!.Version: 1.3.3

Great app, now with link support!Check this out.Version: 2.9.2

Rapidly become my favourite...What a lovely app! I've got dozens of capable text editors on my iOS devices, but this has rapidly made its way to the top of the tree. Designed with the same care as 2Days (one of the truly great minimalist task managers), 1Writer manages to do all the things you really need while remaining very quick to load. Now that it's also working with external keyboards (an early issue, long resolved), and also has a search function, it's one of the top text apps. Highly recommended!.Version: 1.2.1

Amazing appThe only Obsidian app companion on iOS worth mentioning. This app makes my plain text note taking to another level..Version: 3.3

1writer is the best markdown editor on iOSI highly recommend this app. 1writer is a great markdown editor..Version: 3.3.1

Best writing app I’ve ever used. This app is fantastic. One of its best features is how it will remember where you last left the cursor in a document when you open another. You can swipe out of a draft and come back to it right where you left off. This and being able to organize everything into files has made it one of my most used apps because of how easy it makes writing..Version: 3.3.6

Great! One thing I’d like to seeThis app really provides a distraction free, easily comprehensible writing environment. I use it for everything from chapter drafts to blog posts to research notes. That being said I’d like to see support for the triple dash line divide that I’ve seen in other markdown apps and the ability to leave spaces at the beginning of a paragraph(not talking about tab indentation, just to be clear.) I don’t have much issue with the existing app. It works perfectly well, but I would easily give 5 stars if it had a few more formatting options!.Version: 2.9.2

Great!Very effective Markdown app. Exactly what I was looking for. All the features you want when writing on Markdown are there in front of you and it all makes sense!.Version: 3.3.1

GreatThis note taking app has continued to improve and is now surpassing the bigger names like iAWriter and Byword. I no longer use iAWriter because they haven't updated their app for ios7. Byword is good, but 1writer has just edged out the others with its latest update..Version: 1.3.1

Works for my needsMy needs are a simple text message editor that can handle larger files, which it does really well. You can also dive into some extended, cool functionality if you need to. [This appears to be fixed now] My only negative would be that while the editor is open and I’m editing a file, if I rotate the phone (usually by accident) and rotate it back the app hangs for a couple seconds then crashes. I’ve never lost data from this happening, so it’s a minor annoyance. It’s been a very reliable app for my needs for years. I highly recommend it..Version: 3.3.6

Stable and fastI use nvALT AND notational velocity to keep two different sets of notes (over 1000 in one, and about 200 in the other) in Dropbox. I need something that will allow me to access those notes on my iPhone and iPad. IMHO, 1Writer serves my purpose extremely well. It is stable and fast. Its interface is intuitive. The markdown preview and inline syntax highlighting works very well. The support for multiple folders is a bonus. I no longer need to use two different apps to keep my two sets of notes. I have used a lot of the similar products (I dare say I have tried them all) and this is easily the best, at least for my purpose. Compared to others, 1Writer is very stable and fast. This is very important to me..Version: 1.3.3

Very good value. I recommend!1Writer fundamentally supports open data, using standard formats (txt, md) and cloud platforms (eg, DropBox). I can therefore easily use 1Writer on my iDevices and then another text editor on my desktop. It also means I’m not “locked in” to an app. I like the configurability of folders and also of the ‘toolbar’ for the editor. I’ve reconfigured both folder structure and toolbar to suit my way of working. The Preview works well too. I also really appreciate that there’s no subscription structure. I was unsure whether I’d really use this app, when I first bought it, but it’s now my go-to note taking app on my iPhone. Seriously. Thank you to the developer/s for creating and maintaining this app..Version: 3.3.6

All-round great writing appA wonderful app for working on text/markdown files. Syncing with Dropbox, it feels seamless to switch back and forth between writing on PC and on phone. As some of my notes are somewhat long and divided by several headings, I'd love to see an activatable toggle/fold option (in edit mode) for hiding content of headings and even for bullet points. This would help me navigate long notes and keep writing space cleaner. But this is extra, this really is an all-round great writing app..Version: 3.1

Pleasantly surprisedI think this app is by far better than byword and ia writer. It is incredibly underrated. I'm surprised this app isn't more popular than it is now. To the developers: please keep up your work hard work and commitment to make this app superior than the rest..Version: 2.0

Top AppOne of the top text editors on iOS. What makes this great isn’t all the features it has, rather I will point to two things that only become clear it is different once you use the app. The first is the speed of sync with the file menu - other apps choose a different route which makes things slower and the developers responses to support email. Both top notch! The app deserves to be on your phone or iPad..Version: 3.3

Remains awesomePrior to getting this app, I had tried around 30 “mark down-capable, cloud-connected“ iPhone apps to integrate with many notes stored in many folders on dropbox. I first tried Simplenote and some others, I think 2011-ish, because I was unhappy with Evernote‘s lock-in of my text notes, and I had heard Merlin Mann and some other respected tech folks explain plaintext and markdown. Over the years, some apps would work for a while, then not. I switched to 1Writer in 2016 or 2017, and I liked the interface, the favorite folders, and the tag support. After having years of problems with apps not being able to handle dropbox synchronization without bogging down, crashing, duplicating data, etc., I was prepared for this app to eventually fail as well. Good news for me – it did not fail, and the synchronization has been amazingly good – no crashes or duplicates, no need to restart the synchronization all the time. Even if I don’t synchronize for a while, then go back into the app and rubber band to refresh, and then leave the app, when I return, everything is synced up nicely. I have no time to write reviews, but my sense of gratitude for this great app compels me to share the goodness, so there you go :-).Version: 2.8.4

Absolutely fantasticPlease please don’t change this app and break it with “new” features is my only request! Otherwise: - Works perfectly with dropbox - Editing and saving is seamless - Love the preview and edit options - Affordable I’ve actually started using this instead of Apple Notes for quick notes. I have a PC so editing my notes in Markdown (using Typora on PC) is much easier than the crap iCloud web app.Version: 3.1.1

This App Is AwesomeI don’t use many of the advanced features, but they’re there and they work great. I use this mostly as a writing app for 5-6 years now I think. It’s never failed me and never crashed. I’m a dream interpreter, so use it mostly for writing dreams I’m the middle of the night. I dream a lot sso this is really important for me. The night mode is vital to me so I don’t wake up my wife with a bright screen after I’ve woken up to record something. I love this app. I’ve used many others and this one is a keeper. And I think its usability is really strong considering all the advanced things it can do for more advanced needs. It’s still a really simple UI. So that makes it great..Version: 3.3.5

SammyDuck1Writer is perhaps the most versatile and dependable markdown editor in the App Store. Its track record, since its inception, has yet to be beat. The downloadable actions, which extend the feature set enormously, are indispensable, or one can create one’s own actions using Javascript. Its url scheme is first rate and allows it to connect well with other apps and services. I use this app for posting to my Wordpress site. The UI is about as clean and clear as they get. This app is perfect for everything from blogging to novel writing, and it is remarkably bug-free. Dropbox syncing to specific folders is quite reliable. One wish I’d voice: It would be great to manually sort all files and folders at every level. Though merging files is possible thru drag-and-drop, that could be facilitated a bit, I think. You really can’t go wrong here..Version: 2.9

Nice editor, but could use some support for org filesI really like the features and design of this app. One downside is my files are formatted in the org format. Full text search does not work with them, even though they are just text files. Some support for org rendering would also be nice..Version: 3.3.6

Needs better file navigationThis seems really well done. Unfortunately it lacks the ability to navigate back when you’ve followed a link to another file. This makes it very difficult to work with a large set of notes. I hope the developer will consider implementing this!.Version: 3.1.1

Not the most intuitive setup ...To get auto-syncing working, but once setup appears ok (haven't tested under subway conditions). Other than that appears to be a good md editor. Time will tell (will edit review accordingly)..Version: 2.2.2

Please add an iOS 14 widget! This addition would make the addition of thoughts as frictionless as possible..Version: 3.2

I'm pretty sure I've tried at least... all of them 🤔It may be premature of me to review 1Writer (as I've not used it all that much) as well as a little presumptuous (I'm not an accomplished writer by any means)... Nonetheless, I thought my one little observation (as a person who does not know the meaning of the words "you have far too many apps on your iPhone - and you wonder why it acts strangely") might come in handy to someone trying to choose between all the decent writing apps. Suffice it to say, they all have their strengths, but I believe 1Writer has the most complete set of features among them. (I just checked and there are 16 apps in my "Writing" folder. Perhaps I should write something.).Version: 2.9.6

Amazing app.Very good..Version: 2.9.4

Great text editing appGreat for text especially in markdown. Seems to have everything covered in an easy to use way. Has replaced all my other text editing apps. Only 2 wishes from me: Google Drive sync and a native ability to drag and reorder lines. Updated score to reflect reordering is possible now and no longer need google drive. Still a superb app..Version: 2.9.2

AWESOMEHands down the best markdown iPad/iOS editor I’ve used... has everything I need and is extremely portable. Integrates extremely well with my workflow between zettlr on my pc + iCloud Drive... looks like this should integrate very well with zettlr or other markdown workflow on multiple platforms! Particularly needed the wiki style links + image support with relative paths... very pleased to be using 1Writer!.Version: 3.1

The best in its class1Writer is elegant and straightforward, with excellent Dropbox syncing, and reliability. The one thing I would love to see added are tabs. Ideally, we could have several documents one at once, and preferably that state saved so that the app could be closed, and when reopened those documents would automatically be reloaded, complete with the cursor positioned at the relevant points within each. Nic.Version: 3.1

BrilliantDoes everything I want. Direct editing of docs on Dropbox and great markdown support..Version: 2.8.6

Excellent markdown appFast and easy to use. Include file transclusion which few editors do..Version: 3.0.4

Great appStill my favourite app for writing with some great recent updates..Version: 2.5

Stable, beautifulExtremely stable whilst working with thousands of Dropbox docs. Good looking markdown formatting. My go-to Dropbox editor..Version: 2.0

A must have! This app is one of the best out there. Simple yet customizable. It does pretty much everything I need without charging me a monthly or yearly fee like some other apps out there. I only have two small requests. First is that I would like to be able to customize the line length. I’m using an iPad Pro, 12.9” screen and the app leaves a lot of white space on the sides. If I could choose the line length (size of the margins) that would make this app even better. Lastly, please add the ability to export as an RTF file..Version: 3.0.2

Fantastic Customer ServiceI originally downloaded this app as a replacement for Plaintext 2, who went out of business and stopped supporting the app. I had some issues with the .txt files I saved pulling up in other programs showing symbols instead of quotes. I shot an email to them when I was just about to give up, and quickly received a personalized response and fully detailed answer to my question (basically turn off Smart Quotes and Smart Dashes in 1Writers Settings). Fantastic App Awesome Customer Support.Version: 2.7

All around stellar app: my go toI used Editorial for many years and though I tried many other writing and note taking apps before and after that, 1Writer is the one I use every day and trust the most with my writing and notes. Another app worth a look in this space is the new app Tot from Icon Factory which is a fun, simpler take with similarly high standards. But 1Writer is far more powerful and flexible, and allows me to use iCloud to edit my notes on the Mac in my preferred text editor which is usually Sublime Text these days. Having access to the raw files in a normal filesystem matters to me, and 1Writer strikes the perfect balance for me of being quick to capture an idea with sane, customizable defaults, and fully featured enough to go back and find then edit that idea later. The switch between editing and previewing markdown can be quirky to get used to but it's handled well here. Plus the in-app browser experience was recently simplified to great benefit. It's nice to see the app keep improving so considerably and steadily..Version: 3.3.6

Best app for plain text editingLast decade I began to separate content from style as a CSS + HTML based website designer. I normally write all content as plain text, then import and style as appropriate for web, print, etc. My file structure is mainly plain text files organized by client and project into folders. 1Writer is ideal for working this way. I can quickly browse and edit cloud-based files on the iPad, then do likewise on the Mac using a standard text editor and Finder. Sync between platforms has been working well for me. I prefer this paradigm to other text editing apps that bundle multiple documents into a single large package. The 1Writer interface is thoughtfully designed, uncluttered and stable. Markup is a welcome bonus at times that I use it..Version: 2.9.4

So smoothReally enjoying using this app, works seamlessly with Dropbox..Version: 3.1

Best so far; wish I could “select line.”I’m a writer and I’ve been through a number of text editors for iOS. When my last favorite one wilted and died due to lack of support, I set out to find a really good one. Various sources steered me to 1Writer, and I discovered I’d already bought it in the past but never used it. I reinstalled it, set it up to sync with Dropbox, and have been happy ever since. My previous text editors would often not allow me to create new files unless I was online or had a data signal (because I had them set to sync with Dropbox), but 1Writer doesn’t give me that trouble. The one thing I really miss from my last, now dead, text editor was the option to “select line” when you touch and hold and get the usual “select” and “select all” options. Often, it would be convenient to select a line or paragraph without having to drag the beginning and ending markers hither & yon using a touch screen. So pleeeeeeeeease add that, okay? Thanks!.Version: 3.3

GGreat app, really well worth the money if you value your note taking and the invaluable ability to make sure you never lose them with Dropbox. Most important thing to improve by a long way for me is the search function; at the moment it's not particularly useful. ***search works properly now... wooo! Hells yeah!!***.Version: 2.8.1

Lovely appI must have tried more than 30 text editors - especially searching for markdown editors with preview customization. This one takes the cake. Excellent customizations hidden in the settings. One thing missing is the content SEARCH feature. Hope this would be added. Also, one of the few apps that can launch Resilio Sync files directly from the Finder window. Very clean and yet full of essential functions. Five stars!.Version: 3.3.1

GreatMy go markdown editor on the iPhone. Great app..Version: 1.2.5

The BEST notes app for iOS1Writer is brilliant. I've tried loads of notes apps and this is without a doubt the one to buy. My favourite features: - integrates with Dropbox so you can access and edit your notes on other devices and they're all synced (iOS, Mac, PC) - allows notes to be stored in a user-determined folder structure - this is so useful. You can even create/edit the folders in 1Writer - being updated and has a responsive developer (I reported a minor quirk and he diagnosed it immediately and fixed it quickly in the next update) - really simple effective design Excellent 5/5.Version: 2.2.2

The best of them allIt's becoming almost cliche to say this (or have I just read too many plain text editor reviews?), but I've tried a LOT of text editors for iOS, and found this the best. I've got high expectations: minimalist interface which gets out of the way of your work, reliable and automatic Dropbox syncing, ability to preview markdown, inline preview of markdown as you type, and support for text expander snippets. Oh yes, and no bugs. This app does it all, and for a very reasonable price, especially considering it's a universal app. One thing it has which I haven't seen anywhere else is the ability to work with hashtags. Although I haven't used it extensively yet, it is a very promising feature. Well done developers! --- 8 August 2014 Update: Nice to be able to use TextExpander snippets in file and folder names!.Version: 1.4

Almost perfect for my use-caseWebDAV support is wonderful. Otherwise the edit/preview behaviour and UX is great. I only wish there was a third, presenter view like Pages’ presentation mode (adjustable font size) for speaking notes..Version: 3.3.6

Best iOS text editorI've tried a good number of editors for iOS and this is by far the best I've found. Fast, full-featured and scriptable..Version: 2.0.1

The best out there for IPhone.I bought this app the first week it was on the App Store and I’ve been using it almost daily since. It’s got all the features most would want and since it’s release it has been updated almost continually by the Dev. If it doesn’t have a feature you think you might need, wait a month and it probably will. It’s easy to use and has a robust filing system searchable by title, date, sub file, or hashtag. As I said, this is the best text editor currently available for IPhone . Well worth the price..Version: 2.8.1

Big fan of this appOne feature that feels missing: when opening a file from Dropbox, there’s not an indication of whether that file is the current version until the app finishes syncing. It only takes a few seconds to sync, but that’s enough time to make an edit that will generate a Dropbox “conflicted” duplicate of the file. If there were a visual “syncing” indicator, or if Dropbox files weren’t editable until syncing completed, that would clarify that 1Writer is working in the background, which isn’t clear currently..Version: 3.3.6

Love this app; much cleaner than Drafts. In-place editing not ready yet.Have been really enjoying this app so far. I started experimenting with TextExpander and one thing I would really like to see is better support like Drafts has. For example, when expanding a snippet with placeholders, Drafts actually opens up the TextExpander app so that you can fill in the placeholder and then returns to completed text to the Drafts app. Also, trying to edit in place inside Dropbox seems to be buggy. It constantly tries to update the file while it's still open, which has caused me to lose some work. I haven't bothered with that since first trying it. I do appreciate the Dropbox integration. One thing I would like is the ability to create the new files inside a Dropbox folder of my choice so that they are available on all devices. What's the point of saving something locally? Maybe this feature is there and I just haven't found it yet. EDIT: thanks for the response. To clarify, I meant setting the default location of NEW files to Dropbox. In other words, having the new files when I open the app automatically save to Dropbox instead of to the device. EDIT 2: Well, this feature is already there. Never mind!! Thanks for the response once again. Overall a five star app; improved TextExpander support would really make it nice for composing emails with templates and placeholders. Please add it!.Version: 2.8.2

Normally 5 Stars, but...Ok. I gave this app 5 stars because it truly is incredible and deserves 5 stars ... normally. You see, 1Writer has been an essential component in my trusted Drafts / nvALT / Dropbox note system for years. BUT, if it weren't for our long-standing relationship, I'd knock it down to 4 stars. Why? At some point in the last year or so, the app stopped being able to handle my notes folder: It crashes (every time, without fail) after just a handful of insignificant edits to any given note. Devs, please fix! 1Writer is one of the best in class, and I don't want to have to migrate to an alternative!.Version: 3.0.4

Clean app, solid syncing, fast bug fixesReally appreciate the clean design and solid Dropbox sync implementation. Perfect solution for editing text files across iPhones and iPads! I e-mailed support when iPadOS 15 caused the Dropbox link to periodically vanish, and an updated version of the app was available to download less than 24 hours later. Haven't seen the bug since. Outstanding!.Version: 3.3.4

Excellent appI have tried loads of markdown enabled text editors and 1Writer has proved to be the best far. The developer is very quick to respond to any issues..Version: 2.2.2

Making progressGood idea, kind of like Editorial, but nowhere near the polish of the top writing apps. Navigation is not intuitive. Some of the customizations are pretty good, but overall just not fun to use. The developer really needs to work on the UI and UX. For example, swiping from the right gives you the (unnecessary) web browser, not preview as you’d expect. To switch between edit and preview, you have to tap a link at the upper-right. Update: Developer is making updates. Works more like iA Writer now. Still a bit clunky, but I'm trying to use it because it allows you to create custom actions with JavaScript. Really, that and the customizable keyboard are the best features..Version: 2.9.1

My favorite writing appI’ve tried maybe a dozen writing apps on iOS, and this is the only one that’s stuck for me. It has exactly everything I need, and nothing I don’t. It doesn’t make ludicrous claims about how it’ll enhance your productivity, and it doesn’t force you into convoluted workflows. It’s just a good place to type, and focus, and you can see your word count. It’s perfect..Version: 3.0.2

Great app in tandem with Evernote!I have had this app for a week now. I use it to save my diary notes to Evernote, which I have not been able to do in Evernote itself strangely. It is my first Markdown app and I really like the simple but effective way it works. An absolute must and a good alternative to Byword..Version: 2.0

One app to rule them allNot often you see a devloper who sticks with his app and upgrades it. This app keeps getting better. It has replaced my all notes app (simple formatting). UI is great and app never crashes and its fast! Developer is also very nice and helpful. Check out his other app for to-dos :) I love this app. It is quick, very stable, fast and reliable sync with Dropbox and iCloud. It has beatuful writing options and markdown editor. Tags are great! Again if you need a GREAT text and notes app get this one! I have tried over 50 of them and I'm glad I boght this one. Oh and I love the color! Dunno why but it makes me productive and concentrated! It has everything and it looks great! Works as my whole note database! ------------- This app continues ti be amazing!.Version: 3.2

BrilliantOne request however, is to allow options for specific inline preview options (ie. I would like code block text to be the same colour as normal text).Version: 3.3.6

ExcellentThe best app I have used for plain text files, Dropbox and markdown (have used most of them). Syncs perfectly with Dropbox, great todo list functionality. Being able to write custom actions is excellent. Really, really superb note taking app..Version: 2.0

Fantastic/stable markdown notes app that has all the basic features and then some.I’ve been a trusted user of 1Writer for a few years now, dabbled in almost every other notes app out there over time. It’s amazing to me the developer keeps this going with each new version of IOS’s new features and never charges an upgrade. At least add a tip system! If you have a bucket of markdown notes on your Mac you maybe use with NVAlt, The Archive or the upcoming NVUltra and you want fast and reliable syncing with hashtag support, simple export options – this is the one! When support for iCloud folders was added I moved all my notes over to iCloud and continued to use it just the same. Having the ability to customise with JavaScript actions is just icing on the cake..Version: 3.0.1

The best scriptable text editor on iOSReliable and well polished. Designed with beautiful elegance and restraint. And now, to my delight, previews LateX too :-).Version: 3.2

Great appReally nice note taking app, and it's continuing to be developed. Would be really useful to be able to change the custom keyboard keys to whatever you like..Version: 2.2.2

Great note taking appI started using 1Writer with Dropbox years ago, which allowed me to take notes on both my iPad and iPhone and sync them to various other computers. Super helpful, and the direct editing of files on Dropbox was generally pretty robust (I don’t remember ever losing data when switching between devices on the same document, though obviously something I would try to be careful about!). Now that I’m migrating to a WebDAV server for syncing, 1Writer is still my go-to note taking app. I appreciate the in-line style preview for Markdown formatting, and while I had some crashing issues at first with the new server setup, it’s all sorted out now. Thanks for the great app..Version: 3.3.5

Excellent Text Editing App1Writer is an excellent text editor. I love the WebDav support that I use to sync with my Nextcloud server. Most ipad text editors really only work well with iCloud, but that’s not the case with 1Writer. Also I can link to local photos within a file and actually see the photos in preview unlike other text editor apps for ipad that I have tried. Finally, this app just looks and works great...Good theme options, intuitive UI, and I can even switch off the in app browser (which is the only part of this app I don’t care for.).Version: 3.0.4

BrilliantHaving used several different text / note-keeping apps over the years I started using 1Writer about a year ago. I love it. For a long while I used several text apps at the same time - partly because I was never entirely happy with any of them. 1Writer is perfect for me. It’s simple, quick, easy to use, and the dropbox syncing (I sync a folder using Dropbox that is shared with nvAlt on my Mac) has never let me down. Whilst it can be very simple, it is also customisable with many extra actions and functions installed easily from the 1Write website web. These work in a way that adds functionality without complexity. It looks great and works wonderfully well. And the ability to search within notes from the new iOS 9 spotlight feature is the icing on the cake! I can’t recommend it highly enough..Version: 2.2

Excellent Markdown editorThis app has many well-thought out options and an intuitive design. It works well not only as a markdown editor, but also has search functionality that is useful for managing many documents..Version: 3.3

Better than bywordGreat app, simple and featureful..Version: 1.3

Useful editorWorks with cloud services, Dropbox, file providers (e.g git + working copy) has a convenient markdown editor. Allow customising the name of new files, which allows date based notes..Version: 3.3.1

The best of its kindThis suits my needs perfectly: a clean, simple text editor that syncs .txt files to Dropbox. Better than many similar apps I've tried..Version: 1.3

Best non-subscription markdown text editorIt urgently needs iOS 14 support update. Please, please..Version: 3.1

Clean and easy to useMy one request would be that tags in externally stored files also show. Unless I’m missing something I can only see the tags that are stored in the app’s document folder..Version: 3.3.1

Excellent and very customizable1Writer can accommodate a multitude of workflows. I use it for editing very long files since it retains cursor and scroll position across sessions. It supports MultiMarkdown which is incredibly flexible. It uses its own Dropbox sync service, so you can actually add and browse Dropbox folders from its sidebar, unlike other apps which only let you add individual Dropbox files via the iOS Files picker..Version: 3.1.1

Where did Preview go?My previews are blank since the latest update. What gives? Previously, this app worked well as an on-te-go method of inputting content into my desktop Obsidian Vault saved on Dropbox. I’m new to Markdown so I’m a bit hit and miss on some of the formatting. I like to see previews as I work to make sure I’m doing it correctly. Now, when I hit the preview button, I’m greeted by a blank page. The text is still there in edit mode and I can open the documents in Obsidian and preview/work on them there but it’s a bit of a bummer. Hope a fix is coming shortly..Version: 3.1.1

One of the best apps I've ever depended on1Writer does a great job. I sync a couple folders of plaintext notes between my iPhone and my Mac, and it does an awesome seamless job of this, while also supporting Notational Velocity-like fulltext search, as well as markdown preview, customizable JavaScript actions, a quick action keyboard bar... it really is spectacular. And has never charged for an update yet. Really spectacular work..Version: 3.0.1

Helpful for ZettelastenUsing 1Writer as part of my Zettelkasten note taking together with Zettlr on Mac and Dropbox as the data repository. Very good together..Version: 3.0.3

The best writing app on the App Store! This app is such a joy to use, and has been on my home page ever since I bought it. It's great to be able to pin files to the notification area so the important things are there straight away. A clean, top quality and regularly updated app, there are lots of hidden features that don’t get in the way when you just want to jot something down before forget it, yet there's enough there for serious writing projects. Buy it, you won’t regret it!.Version: 2.9.2

As good as it gets for note-taking.I have tried a number of markup based note taking/writing apps over the years and so far 1Writer is the only one that ticks all the boxes. It has a clean, simple interface, which puts creation of a new note at the forefront, making it quick and easy to jot things down, but is also fast and simple to navigate the folders for filing notes. Sync featues (I'm using DropBox) are fast, smooth, and so far reliable, but best of all it sync's/saves plain text files, meaning you can easily access the files created by 1Writer on other devices and platforms the app may not be avaiable on. The problem I had with alot of other mark-up editor products was that they either didn't support sync'ing or used propriatery librarys making access difficult outside the app. The mark-up system is fairly standard and the keyboard shortcuts are well thought out. Another useful addition when comparing it to other products is in-line image insert. I'm not sure how this works without DropBox though as with DropBox sync enabled it uploads the image to DropBox and inserts a mark-up link to display the image. Overall I would highly recommend it for note-taking, and on-the-go writing..Version: 2.5.1

Super for Cognitive ProductivityI use this on iOS to edit files it creates and to edit files I previously created on macOS with nvUltra (precursor was nvALT). I described some of my uses of 1Writer in my “Cognitive Productivity with macOS” book. Eg i use it for my “cognitive task lists”. This is the app I use the most for writing and dictating notes on iPhone. Love it..Version: 3.0.2

Great app that I can’t continue usingI hate when people take stars off a review for an app not having a feature that fits there specific needs so I didn’t. 1Writer is perfect in every regard. But, I need an editor that syncs with Google drive and that isn’t 1Writer. Hopefully in the future it will be..Version: 3.1.1

Wow, finally a Markdown app that _just works_After being bound to iA Writer (classic) for a long time, its Dropbox implementation stopped working. Unfortunately, as a Linux user, I cannot use iCloud to sync my wiki across iOS and my laptop, and so so many iOS apps seem to disregard Dropbox, or have a very poor implementation. Luckily, 1Writer is _absolutely_ perfect. Looks good, customizable to the tiniest detail, intelligent font rendering, flawless Dropbox support, fairly cheap and none of that subscription model crap. Amazing, I hope its creator keeps updating it, and that more people find out about it! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻.Version: 2.8.6

Smooth experienceI really like this app. Easy and enjoyable..Version: 3.3.5

Fantastic app!Great text editor! Good features and well priced for what it gives you. Thank you..Version: 3.1.1

Exactly what I neededDropbox support is seamless. Editor is good looking. Supports [[wikilink]] syntax. The in-app browser is something I didn’t know I needed, but I’d sure useful. The only think preventing this from being the perfect app for me is the ability to change the search engine in the in-app browser from google to DuckDuckGo.Version: 3.1

Best DropBox notes app.I love the new ‘Favourites‘ folder. If you can change the widget so that you have the choice to see favourites instead of recents this would be 5 stars..Version: 2.9.2

Almost perfectThere are millions of apps, yet this app manages to cut through the noise. It does a small set of things really well. It’s a tool. It’s a text editor for editing .txt and .md files, no matter if those files are stored locally or in the cloud (iCloud or Dropbox). No other app I know of stands as a contending tool without also adding unnecessary complexity. There is no requirement to make an account. You merely purchase the app, download it, and use it..Version: 3.3.6

Great appI've spend about $100 on various code/text editors. My search is over! I use exclusively for text. I do have a couple of suggestions: 1-add an option to go to beginning of file when it opens and 2-add an option to keep the left navigation menu always visible..Version: 3.0.1

One of the few left that syncs with DropboxThanks for still syncing with Dropbox. Other apps used to synch with third parties but for some reason most are iCloud only. I use an iPhone and a windows laptop so finding apps that work across both is a pain sometimes. 1Writer allows me to write and see my notes on my iPhone while still allowing me to use my windows machine to edit and write as well. Finally the tag support is top notch here and I can navigate/view my tags here in the app and on my laptop so I’m very happy. Thanks to you developers working on this app..Version: 2.9.4

A clear and feature-full text editorThe latest update brings a dark theme, that was unexpected but is a fantastic addition. The layout is easy to navigate, there are numerous options to publish to that can be set up and well it just does what you want it do! I highly recommend it..Version: 1.3.1

Best notes app with markdown supportHave been using this for only two week but am already very impressed especially the ability to include images in notes (missing from my previous notes app Simplenote and I don't want to use Apple Notes' proprietary format). Solid recommendation!.Version: 2.5.2

Developer Thought of EverythingI use this application to edit markdown notes stored in pCloud using WebDAV so everything syncs nicely with my computer. It’s a breeze to type, especially with the handy special characters keyboard. The export function threw me for a loop at first because it defaulted to hard line breaks. I was just about to give up for another app when I found a setting just for line breaking. So glad to keep using my favorite app!.Version: 3.3.5

Highly Recommended! It’s basically perfect. I have it sync through Dropbox and use nvAlt on my laptop. I've tried probably 10 apps for note taking and for me this is the best. Keep up the great work. Only request is an option for draggable scroll bar..Version: 2.8.6

Nextcloud powered notes syncing!I self host Nextcloud and I can use the WebDAV syncing to point at the notes folder on my server. And now I can use the same notes everywhere without relying on a proprietary syncing service or iCloud. This is what I’ve been looking for to pair with Typora for iOS/Mac/Linux notes taking bliss!.Version: 3.3.6

Nice Dropbox interfaceThe workflow for keeping files up to date on Dropbox is very nice. It automatically returns on launch to the last Dropbox folder I had open. It auto uploads the changed files and keeps in sync. Simole and effective, thanks!.Version: 3.3.5

Perfect for Nextcloud notesI tried several apps for synchronising Nextcloud notes on iOS. This one was the best, hands down. I particularly like the markdown support and ability to access notes/files in any location (not just in /notes) Support is responsive..Version: 3.3.6

The best, needs more cloud storage options1Writer has long been the best plaintext app on iOS. Its minimalist UI, regular updates and extensibility mean you can trust it. It never lets me down on syncing and it’s just a joy to use. At this point in time, especially with Dropbox now limiting free users to 3 devices, it’s badly in need of support for some other syncing services such as OneDrive and iCloud..Version: 2.9.2

Amazing Useful AppI use this App daily and find it extremely useful. It's my go-to App for all text writing. I love the way you can set up folders and subfolders - very helpful. EDIT: I still love this App, but it has a flaw that drives me nuts. If I copy a link into a document, then go to touch the link (the plan being to use it in email or another document), I end up at the link location! Finally, it's almost impossible to exit back to the base App. (I tried to find an email to report this issue, but I might have missed it...).Version: 3.3.5

Good idea, 1 big issueOne big issue I have with the app is that the tags section is cluttered with items that aren't meant to be tags. There's no way to invalidate tags. As far as I'm concerned #banana shouldn't register as a tag if it's inside code blocks, but it still would..Version: 2.8.6

Better and Better1Writer is the best of several notes apps that I have tried as a mobile companion to NValt (Notational Velocity)on my Mac. But I had been looking around at different note apps hoping to find one that offered wiki style links, using paired square brackets, without success. But now that feature has come to 1Writer, so I don’t have to look elsewhere. Since that linking system works in NValt as well as 1Writer, I’ve basically got a plain-text database syncing between my Mac, my iPhone, and my iPad. Awesome!.Version: 2.9.2

Great app for writing on the moveI use this on the train on the way to and from work to draft documentation and blog posts. It's easy to use and the preview is beautiful. One missing feature that would make it perfect is better formatting/preview support for YAML front-matter for specifying metadata..Version: 1.3

The Best I've Tried!!!I've used many, I've tried many, and I've PAID for many simple text writing apps - 1Writer is awesome! Synchronisation with dropbox works perfectly - every single other app I've tried has had drama and caused hassles. And 1Writer keeps local files!!! So when there's no internet, I can STILL access my files - YES!!!!!.Version: 2.2.2

Great appA brilliant text editor and thanks to the developer for updating to and in the new multitasking features in iOS 9.Version: 2.2

Superb for zettelkastenIn a Dropbox folder so can use 1writer on iOS devices & zettle on my PC.Version: 3.2

I’m so glad this app existsFrankly, there is nothing that does what 1Writer does, to the standard it does it. It’s a great text editor. I do wish that I could search notes in *all* my folders, not just in individual folders. And a bit more customisation would be good..Version: 3.3

Good and can be better1. When I press `edit` button in preview mode, it shows the section where I was in edit mode. In most cases, I want to edit what I am previewing. So It would be convenient & reasonable to show the `edit` section same with preview mode. And vice versa. Please update the sync of page between two modes. 2. In iPhone XR, With bluetooth keyboard connected and landscape mode, it is very hard to scroll the bottom tool button by finger because it enables the home button action of iPhone XR, Please add the right and left arrow to allow the scroll of tool button by tapping it..Version: 2.9.2

What a Great AppPerfect way to write Markdown and save to Dropbox!.Version: 3.3.5

Great app for taking notes in markdownThe latest update brought a bunch of great features which make this a great app. The ability to disable inline preview is great and the new full screen mode is much better. I like this app and it preforms better than the other minimal text editors I use on my iPad 3. Thanks.Version: 1.3

Love this App!I was given a $40 Apple Gift card for my birthday and after thinking about it I decided to use that money to find the best for me general purpose text and Markdown editor app. Using some ratings web sites I bought the top 5 apps which included 1Writer. I liked all 5 but 1Writer stood heads and shoulders above the rest in my opinion. I like it so much I'll be sending the balance of that gift card as a tip right after I submit this review..Version: 2.9.6

Best nvAlt Equivalent Mobile AppBest by far for reading / editing my nvAlt mardown docs on the go. Invaluable in letting me read & edit markdown docs when out & about petert.Version: 2.8.1
