Washington Post Select for Negative User Reviews

Generally nice format, repetitive ads, buggyThis is one of the better media apps (Although the WSJ app is still much much, much better, many local paper news apps are simply appalling. The WP app has the dubious benefit of being better than appalling but not really that good). Plus is nice big articles and images to swipe through. Downsides are: 1. The app is supremely buggy on an iPad and dumps you out after swiping through a dozen or so articles. (Maybe this is a feature, not a bug? To keep you from spending a half hour reading the news?) Come on, folks, this problem has been happening forever and is really unacceptable. 2. Branded, embedded “News-advertisements” are overly prominent, annoyingly large, and repetitive. Stuff from the Brand Studio is especially obnoxious and you can see the same Newsvertisements for months and months. 3. It is hard to expose all the content available. If you were to go by what you can see on the Table of Contents and what you can quickly swipe through, you’d think the post was a one or two page newspaper. There’s gotta be a better way to expose and access content. So all and all, this is a “meh” experience and is definitely not WaPo worthy..Version: 1.28.2

Want comments and letters!Don’t know why this edition doesn’t allow us to submit comments or read letters to the editor. I would rate it more highly if it did..Version: 1.30.6

Great paper undermined by poor appWaPo was for many years my hometown paper and remains my go-to choice. But the app is terrible. It may look pretty, but finding the news I want to read is a chore. (Plus the highlighted articles slip and slide so much, it can be a challenge to catch the right one and pin it down long enough to read it.) Search is only a partial solution—for the rest you need to be clairvoyant to know what to search for. Besides, a major part of the enjoyment of reading a newspaper is browsing to see what’s up in the world. The search engine also leaves something to be desired. It almost seems accidental when I find what I’m looking for. The paper deserves a better app..Version: 1.18.0

Thank youThank you for your support of fact based reporting and exposing truths in these trying times..Version: 1.21.1

Not a fan of the paywallNot a fan of the paywall; others like the guardian don’t do it. but I do understand good journalism needs support..Version: 1.15.7

Democracy Dies in DarknessI’ve rated the application with one star for one reason. The reason is, is that each time I open the application these words appear: “Democracy dies in darkness.” Those words are opinionated propaganda, and obviously the opinion of The Washington Post. If I want to read opinions from anyone, I should go to the opinion section of the [electronic version] newspaper for that purpose. Otherwise, where is the newspaper’s objectivity? It appears to me it is lost in the newspaper’s subjective globalist [or leftist, or socialist] agenda, which is the darkness within which our democracy will surely die. Democracy is not globalism. Democracy can only live within the light of a nation state. Democracy can only persist within the strongest of nation states, which is The United States of America. Democracy is coming back to life here in America. Democracy is being resuscitated. Democracy lives in the light..Version: 1.16.6

Totally UnstableThe content is good but the app is now unusable. Cannot even get read a full article now. Crashed twice when trying to send feedback via the app. For God's sake, get the A team devs back..Version: 1.22.1

Wash Post Classic app is much better then thisAs a new digital subscriber I gave this app a try first but this is “curated content” and provides only partial access to the articles one is paying for— I say this because the only way to find the “buried” articles is to use the app’s mediocre search functionality, which doesn’t surface the most recent articles first. So when I input “Capital Weather Gang” which I am sure a lot of people search for often (and subscribe for), I not only was unable to find their main page, but I could tell that results weren’t sorting from newest to oldest, and there was no way for me to toggle that option. There is also no way for me to browse on topic tabs the way I can on other newspaper apps. I deleted this app immediately and downloaded Washington Post Classic, which works perfectly, but I wanted to come back and leave this review for fellow subscribers to the WP. The pretty images aren’t worth it, in my opinion, if you want fast access to the most recent news on topics you want to select rather then “wild cards” that a digital strategist thinks will interest you..Version: 1.19.1

Obsessed With Bad NewsUnder Bezos, and the direction of the Democratic National Committee, the Post has developed what can only be characterized as “Trump-o-phobia”. I’m no fan of the administration, but the Post seems obsessed with emphasizing every negative thing that occurs at attributing it to Trump. This really undermines its credibility as a source of news or analysis. That said, it’s really the only newspaper in Washington. While most of the nation has to suffer reading “Mc-newspapers”, at least the people in the Washington metro region actually get whole stories on global issues they might not otherwise be aware of. While I wouldn’t necessarily trust the content or accuracy of the Post’s political coverage , at least it raises one’s awareness and allows the reader to do further research on the issue..Version: 1.15.7

Automatically sells your personal information to 3rd partyI am not happy with this tactic that WP is utilizing.Version: 1.30.4

Limited content and viewing optionsAs a subscriber, this app is consistent only in its ability to annoy and in making me question the value of my subscription—which is only useful as I’m able to readily access WaPo stories through the better Apple News interface. Content is incomplete and somehow ‘curated,’ and the iPad version offers sort of an all or nothing view—either one story full screen (too big) or a split screen, in which each is too small to read comfortably, augmented by the worst navigation scheme ever. Unlike other apps, there are no related story teasers and the reader is forced to keep returning to a bland story list. The search function may or may not produce stories that have been published and appear elsewhere, which is enormously frustrating. Dear WaPo—please see The Guardian if your looking for an example of how to do this..Version: 1.31.1

The app barely works nowIt always restarts when starting a story. Pretty much useless now.Version: 1.30.5

Crashes repeatedlyLatest version crashes repeatedly after two or three stories. Must fix asap.Version: 1.22.1

App unusable due to crashesPreviously I wrote the app crashed once a day. Now it consistently crashes within minutes of being opened. At this moment, it is effectively unusable. Pity. Commencing countdown before I cancel my subscription....Version: 1.22.1

Crashes regularlyStarted one or two versions ago. Crashes 50% of the time. Very frustrating..Version: 1.22.1

Great journalism, useless appI get the email digest. I click on a story that looks interesting. I’m redirected to the web page. At the top of the page is a banner offering me to open the story in the app. Clicking on it never works. Either the link redirects me to the App Store, even though I’ve already downloaded the app, or it takes me to the app, but to the main feed. Never to the story I’m reading. NYT has their act together and sends me directly from the email digest to the story inside the app. This really can’t be that hard, WaPo. And don’t get me started about the constant emails offering a 50% discount if I subscribe now. I’m already a subscriber! Your journalism is world class and totally needed right now. But your tech team needs to step it up..Version: 1.15.7

Unstable - updateI discarded the "Select" version that was frequently crashing, and am having better luck with the "Classic" version. So far so good with "Classic". Meanwhile, the "Select" version responds to my review with an anodyne apology and a request to "update" my review. Well, as they'd done nothing for me but annoy me further with a useless message, here's my update - downgrade to one star. They really need to try a bit harder at customer service. It is not a service to say nothing useful then wheedle for an upgraded review. I would rather have no response at all. The Washington Post app has recently become unstable on iOS, erratically exiting at random moments. I wouldn't have bothered to have mentioned that here, except that after the latest crash, on reopening the app, it asked me to rate and review it. Bad timing. Generally I like it, but this recent crashing is annoying..Version: 1.21.1

Great content. App is almost greatThis is a good app for a great paper (five stars for content). I also subscribe to the NYT, and feel there’s more than enough unique value in each to pay for both. In many ways, WaPo’s mobile app is more pleasing than NYT’s — simpler and more streamlined, for example. But I have one huge beef with the WaPo iPhone app: as far as I can tell, it doesn’t support zooming on images. For a reader with middle-aged eyes, that’s a pain. And it severely diminishes the impact WaPo’s content. As just one example, WaPo has distinctive reporting on meteorology, an essential part of which is the accompanying graphics (maps, charts, etc). The value of these images is their detail, which is absolutely impossible to discern without the ability to zoom..Version: 1.27.0

Dislike split-screen/lack of visual choicePrefer seeing a range of articles to choose from to decide what I want to read when opening news apps. Really dislike being faced with two long articles chosen for me in split-screen arrangement. Might work better on a phone, I guess. Won't be using this app. Will be browsing the site via Safari instead. WP app designers should take a look at the first rate Guardian app..Version: 1.11.5

WPWonderful lay out. Interesting coverage. Very easy to navigate..Version: 1.19.1

Where is it? Why are different Apps for WP ?Very confusing. I pay subscription, and once when I want to read an article whose beginning is there, they say me "download the app" other time, "upgrade" and so on. Content excellent, user interfaces of WP very confusing. I feel I pay but the service is not there, and the app should be unic. Not getting in the way or reading..Version: 1.11.8

Love the content but can't find my way aroundIt is very difficult to get all the stories in one section, as you can in the browser version, eg The Fix or other subsections. Also, often the related articles at bottom of piece, are not that related or quite dated..Version: 1.11.0

Impossible to cancel subscription.Five stars for the WP, but none (zero) if you wish to cancel the Auto—renewal..Version: 1.15.1

App resets with lock screenApp resets to home page every time screen is locked - this experience is inferior to the web browser..Version: 1.26.1

Awesome journalism. Awful app.App crashes ALL the time even when you aren’t even scrolling, just reading. Has got worse, not better over time. Images from saved articles pop up randomly in articles, even comics so instead of Agnes you get a boned chicken. Index and articles sometimes don’t match making it tricky to navigate..Version: 1.30.5

Bad AppI enjoy your stories. However, when I open your App every morning the top stories do not open. I have to reopen the App several times throughout the day and if I’m lucky, eventually they open. However, not every day. So I don’t always get to read the most important stories. Also, I enjoy reading comments so I can see other’s perspectives on stories. But you do not offer comments on the App. One must look the article up online to read the comments. This is burdensome obviously. I wish WAPO would fix these two glitches. But the stories are top notch..Version: 1.15.7

Here’s how to make it the best news app on the app store1. add a dictation feature. it doesn’t have to be a real voice, it can be archaic like the feature on the apple phone 2. give it more functionality. this app is missing a LOT of news coverage on the regular washington post app. also features such as filtering your news feed, finding news based on topics (it gives you some examples on the regular app and the prompts on the search engine is much clearer in what the user should input). wait. in writing this review, i’ve been switching back from app to app and the thought just occurred to me: what is the difference between the two apps? what keeps the developers from integrating the features on this app with the regular—there’s already the feed of article graphics on the discover page. this app doesn’t seem to have much of a difference compared to the regular so perhaps you can make it a settings option in the regular app? the user can select to have the less cluttered, minimalistic user interface of this app or the regular features and can switch at any time. plus it would make it less confusing when the user sees three different washington post apps on the app store. question: do you guys have a podcast? i thought i saw a podcast section but i might have been wrong. i hope these suggestions are of any use to you! the washington post is such an amazing news outlet and i want people to know that those monthly $6 subscriptions are well worth their money!!.Version: 1.23.1

WebsiteWhy aren’t the articles in chronological order?.Version: 1.29.0

No ability to control what categories of breaking news I want to be woken up forI'm a paid WaPo subscriber and I enjoy the layout and use of the app when reading articles. What I do have a problem with is the fact that I can't specify what categories of news I'd like to send push notification "breaking news" alerts to my iPhone. While I don't mind a push notification at 10 or 11 at night about breaking US, politics, etc. news, I absolutely hate getting notifications about things I care nothing about, such as "sports' or "wild card" human interest stories. WaPo should really consider adding the ability to select what categories of breaking news will send notifications, some of us could care less about who wins a college football game..Version: 1.15.5

BrokenGreat app but can no longer login on my iPhone 8 (seems to be a Captcha error). Today’s (23 Nov) update has not fixed this problem..Version: 1.15.1

The app is boring! But my compliments to the fabulous journalists doing great work hunting Trump 👍👍👍.Version: 1.15.7

An English Man's ViewThis is a very informative newspaper app, I find it interesting and it gives me a different slant on the news. The news is heavily slanted on the US which isn't surprising as the paper is a major US gazette, a little more foreign news and I would have given more stars.Version: 1.11.8

Endless crashingThis used to be a great app until the update last week. Now it crashes about 30-45 seconds after being launched. It’s now essentially useless..Version: 1.30.5

Search bar sucksSearch bar sucks.Version: 1.31.1

Visually untidyApp works fine but whole visual design is dated and cluttered..Version: 1.17.0

Paywall on iOS is ridiculousDo not download this app unless you want to pay 10 dollars a months. You can’t read more than a few stories without paying. I realize it’s good journalism but I can read on the Guardian app for free instead - with a much better app design there too..Version: 1.15.8

Slick, but too clever by halfThis app is fine if you’re mostly just interested in the main headlines and have a fast internet connection, otherwise it’s disappointing. It is possible to search for articles in the paper other than the ones selected for display, but you can’t browse for them. Essentially you have to already know the headline to search for it. Weather would be a useful addition. You can search for weather or capital weather gang, and it will find weather articles for you, that might, or rather more often won’t, include today’s forecast. Also, the headlines are embedded in the graphic at the top which may load very slowly, if at all, with a poor connection. If that happens, there’s no easy way to see what the article is about..Version: 1.27.0

GarbageDoes not cover real news. Worst newspaper. Makes Pravda look like a real newspaper. Shame on the Washington Post..Version: 1.31.1
